Customer Reviews:
Have had this book since 1997 and love it.......2007-07-05
I am reading this book again.. prob the 5 time and I have used about 3 different colors of hi-liter so far. I recommend it and even used the lesson and guidance to help me with my addiction issues this time around.
First time it was family issues, then 2nd time was work issues, third time was deaths in family and fourth time was post college work issues. Its been there for me everytime and this time along with Tx, I am using it again.
Pat Riley would have made one heck of a military general. .......2007-05-17
He is the ultimate strategist, always thinking ahead and planning every act of inspiration and conversation he might use to channel more out of his players than they were currently giving. In 'The Winner Within', Pat Riley shares his tactics for converting his basketball teams into units with an emphasis on the greater good. The highlights of this book came for me in the following:
* Pat Riley's acceptance of being in the right place at the right time when the Lakers needed a head coach and how preparation added to his own confidence that he could succeed at a high level.
* Riley's view on the strengthening process of one's mentality and how being thrown the wolves can be a very healthy experience.
* Making the LA Lakers a team instead a collection of self-serving, finger-pointing superstars. He mentions tactics he employed on each of his different leaders, including ways to use Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's moody eccentricities as a leadership tool.
* How embracing success hurt the Lakers in the mid-eighties and the ways Riley developed a plan to combat complacency on the team.
* How leaders in any profession must be willing to confront cancerous team members swiftly and thoroughly.
* Riley's methods of using strategic moments of temporary insanity and how this can be highly beneficial to the overall good of the team.
* When to know your time is done and move on, as he did when he left LA for New York in 1990.
* Setting reasonable goals that are both attainable and difficult. For example, his 1992 New York Knicks set the goals of being the most hated team in the league, the most conditioned team in the league, and the most professional team in the league. To a T, they succeeded in meeting all their goals.
Riley is very open and honest in this book. He admits that he knew his Knicks would have zero chance of beating the Bulls in a do-or-die game seven in 1992. He had predicted Jordan would get calls and go to the line, and that Ewing would get into foul trouble quickly. Both of his predictions became eerily true. He admits that you must know your place in the pecking order and follow this format:
#1. From nobody to upstart
#2. From upstart to contender
#3. From contender to winner
#4. From winner to champion
#5. From champion to dynasty
Riley's book is also filled with numerous quotes from histories great minds and leaders. Each quote helps highlight what Riley is trying to emphasize.
I recommend this book to anyone who is or hopes to be a manager in any avenue in life. Riley gives a clear-cut format to achieving goals as a leader.
Championship Inspiration.......2006-10-31
This is a book about how Pat Riley coaches to get out of the individual the Winner Within. There are 12 short chapters in this 271 page book with many quotes from many great individuals throughout history including this one from Sir Winston Churchill: "Success is never final."
Shaq has stated the Riley is the most motivating speaker he has ever heard and after reading this book I think you will get a feel for what he meant. Most of the book focuses on Basketball and the Lakers. But there are some good business principles scattered throughout the book that will inspire you to be the best. Riley lets you into his mind so you can see his thoughts and how he worked to get the most out of his team to bring home the championship. It's a great book that will prove a quick read.
A great inspiration for any coach.......2006-07-17
I am a first year basketball coach and found this book very inspirational. It makes me want to work even harder than I have and set higher standards for myself. Pat Riley is an excellent motivator and role model. I like any coach who is willing to write about his major losses in his career as well as greatest triumphs. A must read for any coach. However, he needs to write a sequel since he won his new title this summer. Go Heat!
Doesn't make the playoffs........2005-08-03
Of the over fifty books on leadership/coaching that I've read, this is by far the least useful. There are anecdotes for basketball fans, but as far as useful ideas on success and leadership there are few. It is the most useless book I've read in the coaching/leadership field (even worse than Coach K's or Dean Smith's).

I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.
Game of life.......2007-07-24
I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.
Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

IT MADE ME HAPPY!.......2007-10-03
I was left at the altar with nowhere to turn. Then one of the bridesmaids - or a gal who was supposed to be a bridesmaid I should say - gave me a copy of this book. Literally it changed my life. Bronson delivers from page one. The book made me want to forget old...what's his name now? My BIG MISTAKE let's call him. Anyhow, I want to thank everyone involved in How To heal A Broken Heart in 30 Days. It was, all hyperbole aside, a lifesaver.
Never thought I'd do this..........2007-04-19
First I never thought I'd buy a book like this, and second, I never thought I'd write a review. I've read 2/3 of the book, but that is enough to tell me this book is a gift to my soul.
Every single page is full of love, compassion and realistic advice. Thank you for skipping the platitudes and triteness and for getting to the heart of the matter. (no pun intended) The end of a relationship hurts whether you end it, she ends it or you mutually agree to end it. It hurts whether you are at fault or she is at fault or you both are at fault. It just hurts and this book teaches first that you must give up your pride and admit that it hurts. The pain can vary, but for me I found out something I didn't even know was there.
The relationship I thought I was hurting over was not the one causing me the most pain. It was the one before. I was married for 17 years and ended up divorced. I remarried my college girlfriend who I thought was the love of my life. That marriage lasted (legally) 2 years and 9 months. After that I dated around some and then fell for a woman who I thought was the opposite of every woman I had ever fallen for - but that turned out not to be true... she was the same in many ways.
When I ended that relationship (I ended it, and I was mean when I did it, but there was no other way to make sure the door was shut tight.) I mourned her for weeks. Then I realized that I was in mourning and lonely for weeks before I actually ended the relationship. When I read this book and really looked at myself I realized that I was mourning this relationship AND my second marriage. A double whammy.
This book has helped me uncover some ugly truths about myself and the patterns I keep repeating. There comes a time when grief is over and you move on, but if you move on too fast you don't learn and grow. If you linger too long you get stuck. This book's prescription is just right. Treat yourself well, be kind to yourself, understand and let yourself feel and then let yourself heal.
I am learning to let go of what my heart keeps saying what was, and what might have been, but probably never really was or would have been, both with the second wife and the rebound girlfriend. Now I am beginning to see that it IS POSSIBLE that the next time can be better.
Thank you Howard and Mike.
A great companion through the healing process.......2006-07-31
I bought this book not that long after my ex and I broke up, and I have to say that it has helped my tremendously with the healing process. The day-by-day guide provided a lot of food-for-thought that would serve me well during my counselling sessions as my thearpist and I would talk about the different tips and insights from the book. I recommend it to anyone with a broken heart.
Like A Supportive Father.......2006-02-10
I gave this book four out of five stars, not because it isn't a very helpful book but because a book can only do just so much. You have to create the final star yourself. I did read this book over the 30 days prescribed and followed its advisements as carefully as anyone could. I do feel much much better now because the book helped me understand why he wasn't for me, how separation experiences of the past can come into play and,I learnt how I could make more sensible choices as I stood up and learnt who 'me' is. I also learnt about so many things I could do immediately to help myself feel better both in action and general understanding of myself. I still miss the comfort of him but I suppose that's only natural. This just happened six weeks ago and now with St. Valentine's Day peaking around the corner, one day after my birthday, I might add, it's very hard and I just wish the right one would come along. Thirty days ago, I didn't think anything would help me in the slightest. Now after reading this book, I have hope and some positive feelings about myself once again. I wonder if the authors have found love in their own lives or, if they wrote simply out of their own experiences. I say this because it feels like they had to have survived hard losses to have this kind of unique wisdom. The book has an honest quality without ramming advise down your throat, like a supportive father. I never knew my own dad but I think I've discovered two brilliant surrogates here.
A Book with Personal Support.......2006-02-04
I'm gonna blog a little bit so if anyone doesn't like it, too bad. It's the way it is. I found this book from their really impressive byebyelove.com website which directed me here. Out of pride, I waited two months to buy the book but when I did, I emailed them at the email address provided in the book, even before finishing the book. I never expected to hear from them and, I never expected any book to ease my very real pain. But they each replied to my situation with personal emails and different but complimentary perspectives. They are real people, Mike and Howard and they really care about their readers. So this is a 'ya also get' email. Not only is the book excellent, sympathetic and abundant with real recovery tips that work, ya also get Mikey and Howard. Just thought everyone should know that you get a lot more than just a book. My only regret is that I waited two months. Otherwise, I would've been two months farther along! If this book doesn't help you, you probably have six heads, are covered with deadly green fungus and, have a closed mind.

To contradict the other review..........2007-07-21
You've got to look at works like "The Raggedy Man" in their historical context. When it was written, it was common to have a handy man around and for him to be considered a social inferior to the members of his employer's household.
Riley elevates this handy man. The children love him. The poem ends with the young son of his employer laughing at the idea of being like his father - instead he wants to be a Raggedy Man.

This book is awful. I was so disappointed when I got it. Highly offensive.

Walking - The Deaconess.......2007-01-12
My walk as a new deaconess was by instruction and watching from seniors on the deaconess board. One day I found this book and it gave me a deeper understanding of my duties and responsibilities. As our membership grows, each new deaconess is given this book, and they love it. A lay member saw it and asked if it was appropriate for her to have, I said of course. There is nothing like understanding and wisdom.

what the hel????.......2007-07-16
I agree with all the other reviewers this book is very misleading and difficult to understand...something about 4 prisoners...then this trailor trash family pics up one of the convicts...and uses him for sex....very weird book...i had to put it in trash.
WHY?? HOW??.......2007-06-22
This book was terrible beyond words. Did Urban Books read this before it was published? They couldn't have because if they did it would have never been printed. You don't know what's happening, too much weird stuff going on. Just terrible.....DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK!! DO NOT EVEN GET IT FROM THE LIBRARY!!! I'M TELLING YOU!
NO NO NO!.......2007-06-21
How did this book even get published? Everything was wrong about it, and especially the back cover, when u see this book don't even pick it up, put it back down and let it draw dust. To sum it up keep your money!!
i kinda feel the same.......2007-06-04
I'm sorry, but i'll have to agree with the previous comment. This book wasn't really all that interesting except for some parts. What really got me kinda upset was the discription on the back of the book. The book didnt really have anything to do with it at all.
THIS BOOK SUCKED!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-20
Ok, I read Urban Books ALL the time. They are my fav publisher. I have to say this is the WORST book they have EVER put out. The back cover that tells what the story is about it TOTALLY misleading. It have NOTHING to do with the story. The writing is very confusing. The story makes no sense at all. It's like each chapter is a diffrent weird story. And not in a good way. The chapters and people NEVER tie into one another. I don't know. Buy at your own risk. This one's a str8 DUD!!!!!!!!!
Book Description
France between the wars saw a dynamic mix of larger-than-life personalities and unconventional ideas, audacity and genius, elegance and edge. Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, composers, the American, French, and other European characters who comprised the "Lost Generation" were all there: Hemingway, Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Stravinsky, Picasso, Cocteau, Man Ray, Léger, Balanchine, Diaghilev, Fitzgerald. This riveting portrait re-creates the glamour, excitement, and intellectual fervor of Jazz Age France, drawing on fresh, never-before-seen material. A special feature is a chapter on the little-known generation of African-American artists who left Harlem to work in France.
Writing in a vivid style that transports the reader back to that vibrant time, Charles Riley presents a panorama of the arts scene in Paris and the Riviera in the 1920s, providing fascinating insights based on letters, diaries, journals, and private archives as well as art. Highlights include never-published paintings by Picasso and Léger; previously unknown works by e. e. cummings and John Dos Passos; and intimate photographs of the era from family albums belonging to this circle of friends, who were among the world's great artists and writers. AUTHOR BIO: Charles A. Riley II, professor of English at Baruch College of the City University of New York, is the author of several books on aesthetics and art, including two Abrams titles: The Art of Peter Max and Ben Schonzeit: Paintings. He lives in New York City.

Best friends are important to girls!.......2007-05-07
Girls are all about relationships. Some girls like to have several friends; some just need a few close friends. This video even spoke to my 4 year old daughter about friendships and speaking kindly to each other. Holly Hobbie and her friends are honest with each other. They are good role models of the friend that I want my daughter to be. These children also respect their parents, yet have fun and enjoy spending time with them. That is the kind of mother/daugther relationship that I hope to have with my own child as she grows.
Book Description
Between 1929 and 1970, Dmitri Shostakovich wrote almost 40 film scores of Soviet films, from Stalinist cult epics to classical literary adaptations. His long and distinguished cinema career has hitherto been overlooked. Combining analysis and anecdote, John Riley provides this first account to examine the scores and their contexts in the films for which they were written, the ways in which contemporary events shaped both films and scores, and how he thought about, developed and applied his film music.
