Amazon.com
An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.

All Time Classic.......2007-10-03
This is a timeless coming of age story and an all time classic good read. Farmgirl Fern saves the pig Wilbur, the runt of the litter. She raises him like one of the family as much as possible. Wilbur is horrified, afraid and lonely when he's sold to Fern's uncle. To help him through this difficult time, Charlotte the spider becomes his friend and undertakes the writing challenges of her life when she spins words into her web to help save Wilbur's life. Meanwhile, Fern is growing up, becoming interested in boys and spending less time with Wilbur. Wilbur is taken to compete at the county fair and Charlotte goes along, even though it's the twilight of her life. She gives her all for Wilbur at the fair and in return, Wilbur saves her egg sac and takes it back to the farm with him upon her death. The next spring the little spiders hatch and begin to leave and Wilbur, who desperately misses Charlotte, believes he's destined to be alone. However, three of Charlotte's offspring decide to stay at the farm with Wilbur, insuring that he will have friends in the future. Wilbur welcomes them to the farm and tells the baby spiders about their mother and her legacy.
Along with the main characters, there's a cast of additional farm animals that help move the story along. It's good read for kids, and I've reread it as an adult. I liked it just as much then as the first time I read it. So will you.
Life Lessons.......2007-10-01
What a great book. One of the themes of this work is the reality of death. The author approaches this topic with the delicacy required for the young audience.
Wilbur is faced with possibility of an early demise because he is the runt of his litter. His wise and caring friend, Charlotte, devises a plan to save his life and though it works, she looses her life in the end.
The book is much more than this theme alone, but it is the most salient and captivating.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A very good children's story that use the mechanism of talking insects,
as well as arachnids, of course, to discuss friendship, life, and
death, and the roles of things in the world.
Perhaps a little sentimental, given the amount of pig saving antics that are found within. People have to eat, after all.
Great Book.......2007-05-29
Thanks for the fast delivery and good condition of the book. Perfect satisfaction!!!!!!

Catherine feels trapped. Her father is determined to marry her off to arich man--any rich man, no matter how awful.
But by wit, trickery, and luck, Catherine manages to send several would-be husbands packing. Then a shaggy-bearded suitor from the north comes to call--by far the oldest, ugliest, most revolting suitor of them all.
Unfortunately, he is also the richest.
Can a sharp-tongued, high-spirited, clever young maiden with a mind of her own actually lose the battle against an ill-mannered, piglike lord and an unimaginative, greedy toad of a father?

Customer Reviews:
Quite the entertaining read.......2007-10-08
Karen Cushman has written a delightful literary work for young adults, providing a small and oftimes irreverent (but mostly true) glimpse of the Middle Ages. The protagonist, fourteen-year-old Catherine (nicknamed "Birdy" by her family members"), writes a chronicle of her day-to-day life in the year 1290, initially intending it solely for her adored brother Edward's eyes. Birdy writes of her daily activities (especially the loathed art of needlework), her family troubles (among which include her overbearing, abusive father and her gentle mother, who often gets with child only to miscarry), and her keen observations of the bawdy goings-on within the peasantry surrounding her father's manor.
Spirited and independent in a way that far decries the usual attitude of the women of the time, Birdy fights a constant battle with her "beast of a father" over the endless stream of suitors he sends her way in an attempt to marry her off and make a bit of money in the process. She manages to outwit several of them and send them packing--one of the most memorable incidents includes putting mouse-bones in her hair, blackening her teeth, and talking gibberish at the dinner table--but at last her father seems to have procured the most loathsome, leech-like suitor of them all, a man who is never named, but whom Birdy simply refers to as "Shaggy Beard." None of Birdy's brilliant attempts at scaring off this suitor seem to work. As the wedding day draws slowly nearer, Birdy becomes increasingly desperate, a feeling remarkably and painfully tangible in her writing as the novel nears its sweet and satisfying finish.
At times heartrendingly accurate and sincerely honest, at times laugh-out-loud funny, Birdy's "diary" is a wonderful way for young adults to immerse themselves in the rich history of the Middle Ages. The few sexual references Birdy makes are purely observatory, largely comical and tongue-in-cheek, not at all a cause for concern among parents, and while these references are humorously obvious to the older spectrum of young adult readers, much younger readers might not even make a connection.
All in all, it's definitely worth a read. Even when afflicted with a pounding headache, I couldn't put it down. I can only imagine the appeal it might have to a reader much younger than myself.
For the young an dyoung at heart.......2007-09-29
This diary of a 14-year-old in 13th century England reads smoothly and believably, not an easy task when trying to recreate the inner thoughts of a young adult from a strange culture. Ms. Cushman writes so that a young adult can empathize with with Birdy, and an older adult can remember their own angst at a similar age. (Humorously for me. I broke out laughing in several places.)
Catherine, Called Birdy.......2007-09-02
This lively tale, told from the point of view of a young girl named Catherine, is a diary format that will appeal to many readers. I tend to think that girls will enjoy this story more than boys, due to the main character being a girl. Set in the, "Year of our Lord 1290" we can follow the daily life and times of Catherine, who is of middle wealth in old England. Students who are studying about this time period would be greatly attracted to this novel. It is easy to read and has many stories that bring to life what it might have been like for a young girl at this time period. Catherine is outspoken (often slapped and sent to her room), energetic (dresses up like a villager to play in the mud), daring (walks on foot for 2 days to reach her cousin George's home in York), caring (uses her last money to buy a bear to keep it from being slaughtered), loves to read and paint, eccentric (keeps 10 birds in her room for the company), and most of all, bound and determined to not be married off due to the whim and greed of her father. She may not be an average girl of the times, but as the readers, we certainly get an authentic feel for the times. While reading this story, I was often dismayed by the food descriptions; swan's neck pudding and eel pie! A good comparison activity of how different foods are acceptable to different people at different times. I enjoyed Catherine's relationship with all the characters in the story, and learned at a lot about a country manor and how it was run in 1290. Catherine is ingenious in developing ways to run off prospective suitors, in the end, her trap becomes her savior. The man she was supposed to marry dies, and she is instead given to the son, who has the strange habit of reading and bathing with regular frequency. That which she was avoided all through the book becomes her best way of escaping her father, and growing to live her own life with a man who may just accept her for herself.
As I recall..........2007-08-27
I had to read this in 3rd or 4th grade. I recall finding it rather boring. I struggled through it. Perhaps I would enjoy it more now.
Catherine Called Birdy - - Bad or Good????.......2007-05-23
ok, this book is good AND bad. Birdy (Catherine) is a brat living in Mid evil England. She is very much a tomboy. Her Father, referred to often as The "Beast" is determined to marry her off to the "highest bidder" With her quick thinking she manages to get rid of most of the suitors. However, the one she cannot get rid of is the worst by far. I don't want to give it away, but Birdy makes a heart breaking decision to save a bear, which is stupid in my opinion.
This book is written in journal form. It includes the dates of saints. It also tells a lot of mid evil medicine. The over all plot is pretty good, because it explains the life and perils of the average teenager living in the 13th century. However, it is a bit exaggerated. Girls in that time would not fart, spit, burp, or be allowed to ask questions and say things like wanting to be in a crusade. Also, she would be in big trouble for lighting a suitor on fire, because in the book she is merely spoken to. I recommend this book for kids about 12 years old. If your much older it'll seem stupid (trust me!!!!) and much younger it won't make much sense. (trust me!!!!) Overall, though it was o.k., I'd have to say it was more bad than good.

At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery, trying to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you've ever read.
Gail Carson Levine's examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales takes some satisfying twists and deviations from the original. Ella is bound by obedience against her will, and takes matters in her own hands with ambition and verve. Her relationship with the prince is balanced and based on humor and mutual respect; in fact, it is she who ultimately rescues him. Ella Enchanted has won many well-deserved awards, including a Newbery Honor. (Ages 9 to 14) --Emilie Coulter
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Every child longs for the day when he or she will be free from meddling parents and bossy grownups. For young Ella, the heroine of Gail Carson Levine's Newbury Honor-winning debut novel, this is more than a fanciful wish; it could be a matter of life or death. Placed under the spell of a blundering fairy, she has no choice but to go through life obeying each and every order--no matter what the consequences may be. "If you commanded me to cut off my own head, I'd have to do it."
Eden Riegel (As the World Turns, Les Miserables) uses her youthful, energetic voice to lead the listener into a familiar world of fairy godmothers, wicked stepsisters, and handsome princes. But this imaginative retelling of the Cinderella story comes with a welcome twist. Instead of a demure heroine patiently awaiting a prince who will carry her off, this Ella is a feisty ball of fire with the courage and ambition to take matters into her own hands.
Riegel narrates in a youthful, energetic tone that is perfectly suited to Ella's character. Her voice adds charm and immediacy to a wonderful story already rich with excitement, adventure, romance, and mystery. (Running time: 5.5 hours, 4 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
How can a fairy's
blessing be such a curse?
At her birth, Ella of Frell was the unfortunate recipient of a foolish fairy's gift--the "gift' of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day and a half, or chopping off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse--once and for all.
In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as Catherine, Called Birdy and as richly poignant as Beauty, and has all the marks of a classic in the making.

Ella Enchanted
By Gail Carson Levine
Ella only wanted to be a regular girl. But instead the day she was born, a curse was bestowed upon her. The gift of obedience. The fairy Lucinda does not think before she gives these silly curses and so when Ella is told to do something, she has to do it. If someone told Ella to kill herself she would have to obey. When Ella's mother gets very sick and dies, Ella is left with Mandy her cook that is her fairy godmother and her father. Ella's father traveled all the time and he doesn't know about her curse. Just like her mother said "Don't tell anyone about your curse." Ella had to obey.
But when Ella's dad introduces her to Dame Olga and her dreadfully bossy daughters, Ella realizes that the elder one, Hattie knows that Ella will do anything she says. Hattie commands Ella to give her the necklace that Ella's mom gave to her. But there is a silver lining on the story. Ella becomes dear friends with Prince Charmont, or as his friends call him, Char. Just when Ella thinks that Char and her are becoming great friends, Ella's father ships her off to finishing school so she can become a true lady with Hattie and the spoiled Olive (Hattie's sister).
Finishing school is the worst place for Ella. She must obey every command no matter how awful or difficult. When Ella cannot stand it anymore she runs away, and decides to quest for her fairy godmother and reverse the spell. But Hattie had forbidden Ella to see Char. So how will she be able to tell him how she really feels when he thinks she never wants to see him again?
Ella Enchanted ROCKS!!!!!.......2007-09-06
I really like this new twist of Cindrella! I don't like the fact that Dame Olga, Hattie, & Olive force Ella to be their slave! My friends & I read it all the time! Really good choice for girls & boys of all ages(that can read chapter books)!
A New Spin on Cinderella - Bookwyrm Chrysalis Review.......2007-08-12
Ella of Frell received a fairy gift as a baby, the gift of obedience.
Anything she is ordered to do, she must do, as result of the gift. If she is ordered to jump into an ogre's pot, she will. If she is ordered to kill the prince that she loves, then she must.
Ella Enchanted is the story of Ella's journey to find a way to break her curse, to find the fairy who gave her the "gift," and most of all, to find herself. Filled with ogres, elves, a stepmother and stepsisters who just might be of the evil variety, or at least the self-indulging kind, and a prince who might just be charming, this book puts a new spin on the old Cinderella tale.
This is a classic book in the retelling of fairytales genre, humorous and containing a strong heroine. Ella is kind-hearted and independent, fighting against her curse in every way she can think of. Ella will delight readers of all ages and surprise them as they discover everything that leads up to the famous ball and glass slippers.
Now in its third edition, Ella Enchanted has just been re-released again as a hardcover. The new cover (above) features a real girl and shining gold trim, which matches the other re-releases of Levine's books. All the books have been re-done in honor of her newest book, Fairest. Personally, I like my beat-up copy that comes from the movie release, with Anne Hathaway on the cover. She makes an excellent Ella, and her picture tends to attract an older reader. Even though Ella is fifteen for the majority of the book, the two non-movie covers feature girls who look about twelve. Personally I find this misleading, and I originally avoided the book because it seemed to young for me.
A Sweet Cinderella Story.......2007-07-26
I read this book for a class I took on fairy tales and really really loved it. This is a fantastic read for children and young teens and a great way to give young people a different, more empowering fairy tale heroine story.
The book follows the daughter of a travelling salesman, Ella, who is under a curse from an unpredictable, showy, fairy that 'blesses' people with her poorly thought out birth or marriage greetings. Ella is blessed with the task of obedience, meaning whenever someone gives her a direct command, she must respond to it - although she can find loopholes to get out of doing what people ask her to.
The plot of the story mirrors Cinderella, but also gives explanations for all those things you were ever wondering about the original Cinderella story. After her mother's death, Ella's father realizes he is quite poor and needs to either marry Ella off, or get married himself before other people figure it out as well. He charms a widowed woman with two daughters and they make plans to get married - meanwhile, Ella is sent off to charm school with her stepsisters, one of which figures out Ella's condition. Ella realizes she needs to find a way to not only break the spell, but find a way to save her father from his marriage by entering into a relationship with someone she already has romantic feelings for - the local prince, Char.
Plenty of excitement and drama unfolds as Ella escapes charm school and is united with all sorts of magical beings, Char himself, and the workings of her family. Again, a great telling that adds a bit of logical (if you can suspend your disbelief in the magical setting) sense to this classic fairy tale!
Still my favorite...........2007-07-19
I read this book about three or four years ago, and it still hasn't gotten old to me.
It is also MUCH better than the movie, which completely sucked. If they made the movie exactly like the book, it would have been a hit.
Anyways, I say that anyone should read this! It is and will always be for sure my most favorite book.
I also reccomend books by Meg Cabot, she rocks!

It's bedtime for young Frances--an adorable and irrepressible little badger--and everyone is ready but her. At 7:00 p.m. Frances is wide awake and bursting with youthful excitement. She tries every delay tactic she can muster--from demanding extra hugs and kisses to volleying a series of urgent last-minute questions ("May I sleep with my teddy bear?" "May I have my door open?"). She's almost positive there are spiders, giants, and tigers in her room.
Any parent will quickly identify with this phenomenon--how the last minutes of the day suddenly become the most action-packed. Garth Williams's illustrations complement Russell Hoban's sweet story perfectly, capturing the endless energy and overactive imagination of Frances, and the waning patience of her exhausted parents. Bedtime for Frances is the perfect goodnight story to tell your wide-eyed children. And never fear, like Frances, they too will eventually, contentedly, drift off to sleep. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
Famed for her many adventures, Frances made her debut with this title over thirty years ago. In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Long a favorite for the gentle humor of its familiar going to bed ritual, Bedtime for Frances is at last available with the warmth of full color enriching Garth Williams's original nuanced and touching art. `Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day.'Kirkus Reviews (pointer).

Cake and Spankings for Frances at Bedtime?!.......2007-09-28
I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this book! If I had bought it at Borders I would have returned it by now because I'll never read it to my kids again. Are the people who wrote reviews applauding this book actually parents? This story portrays a little badger who can't get to sleep and keeps coming out to see her parents for some reassurance. Did anyone read her a book to help her off to sleep? Apparently not. Did anyone lie with her to help her get to sleep. No. So she gets up because she feels lonely and afraid. She asks for a piece of cake, which she gets, no problem. After bedtime! My son will never forget that one. After a few more times of leaving her bedroom and seeking reassurance from her parents, she is threatened with a spanking, for not being able to get to sleep. And so she returns to her bed alone, while her parents lie snuggled up close in bed together. A moth begins to bump against her window and it frightens her, but the 'whack and smack' of the moth against the window pane remind her of the spanking so she stays in bed and eventually falls asleep. Ahhh, sweet dreams Frances! What an adorable tale, full of good morals. Just the ticket for sending my two little boys off to sleep.....
Frances Series.......2007-09-05
Another great book in Russell Hoban's Frances series. The illustrations and text related to young children and a reluctance to go to bed.
Lots of skinny legs in the dark.......2007-08-24
This book was my favorite Frances, so well illustrated, so quotable. I grew up on these things, and was much like Frances going to bed, and it brings back such fun memories to read it now with my own children. I also like that this book teaches a moral lesson without forcing your mouth open and shoving it down your throat.
It saddens me a bit to think that some children must be protected from the thought of a giant in the room, being afraid of the dark, or even a little loving discipline to encourage the right behavior. When Frances learned to confront her fears, she was the stronger for it, and got a good night's sleep as well. What my kids learned from it was the alphabet song, and they occasionally get to bed before midnight anyway.
My Two Year Old Demands This Story Before Bed.......2007-01-24
My Dad used to read this story to me before bed and it was very special for me. I was thrilled when he dug it out of his basement and mailed it to me to read to my two year old. I laughed out loud when I noticed the spanking and smoking and told my husband (bc you know they would never dare to put that in a book now )and he inquired why I would read that to our daughter. He then read it upon my urging an agreed it is a wonderfully warm story. Yes, the father smokes a pipe and softly threatens a spanking at one point but he also takes the time all night long to address each of Frances'fears and sends her back to bed each time. Since introducing my daughter to this story she has requested it every night and runs to bed to hear it read. She used to tantrum about going to bed. Better yet, she does not get out of bed anymore once she goes in... not because we spank her or because she fears a spanking(we don't spank), but because she realized that the reason Frances might get spanked was because getting out of bed was against the rules. I think this book is great for helping a child to understand that there are rules they must live by and consequences for their actions. I wish more children would learn that lesson early in life. Another great lesson of this book is that the bedroom is a safe place, even if it looks a little scary in the dark.
Francis is such an adorable character........2006-12-11
I was raised on the Francis books and have started gathering as many as I can for my children one day. The imagination of little Francis knows no bounds. Her songs are adorable and her fears, in her mind, are well-founded. I know how exasperating it can be when your child won't go to bed and this book illustrates that. However, so many people and reviews are feeding the "controversy" surrounding this book. Brace yourself.....
Back in the day, people used to spank their kids! Oh my God, someone get the smelling salts. This was before the "time-out" that has been responsible for children running around supermarkets like unruly heathens. But I digress....
Francis is a cute character and I will collect these books and read them to my children. I highly recommend them if you enjoy a cute touch to your children's reading.

Karen Cushman likes to write with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek, and her feisty female characters firmly planted in history. In The Midwife's Apprentice, which earned the 1996 Newbery Medal, this makes a winning combination for children and adult readers alike. Like her award-winning book Catherine, Called Birdy, the story takes place in medieval England. This time our protagonist is Alyce, who rises from the dung heap (literally) of homelessness and namelessness to find a station in life--apprentice to the crotchety, snaggletoothed midwife Jane Sharp. On Alyce's first solo outing as a midwife, she fails to deliver. Instead of facing her ignorance, Alyce chooses to run from failure--never a good choice. Disappointingly, Cushman does not offer any hardships or internal wrestling to warrant Alyce's final epiphanies, and one of the book's climactic insights is when Alyce discovers that lo and behold she is actually pretty! Still, Cushman redeems her writing, as always, with historical accuracy, saucy dialogue, fast-paced action, and plucky, original characters that older readers will eagerly devour. (Ages 12 and older) --Gail Hudson
Book Description
'Like Cushman's 1995 Newbery Honor Book, Catherine, Called Birdy, this novel is about a strong young woman in medieval England who finds her own way home. This is a world, like Chaucer's, that's . . . dangerous, primitive and raucous. From the first page you're caught by the spirit of the homeless, nameless waif, somewhere around 12 years old. She gets the village midwife to take her in, befriends a cat, names herself Alyce, and learns something about delivering babies. When she fails, she runs away, but she picks herself up again and returns to work and independence.' --ALA Booklist (starred review). '. . .A fascinating view of a far distant time.' -- The Horn Book (starred review)

Mid Wife's Apprentice .......2007-10-09
The time period and setting is very interesting. The acting in the audiobook is top knotch with great accents and realism. This exciting story is for adults too and I can see why it won an important award.
You will be entertained and even learn something new. I listened to it on a business trip and really liked the way it was performed. Just a wonderful story of triumph and learning.
The Midwife's Apprentice Review by Markie Ray.......2007-09-10
If you want a book that will make you sit down and make you read it again and again, this is the book for you. The Midwifes Apprentice by Karen Cushmen explains the life of a girl who has no home and becomes a midwife's apprentice. To begin, Brat is homeless and barely alive. She goes from village to village stealing what she needs, but nothing more. After that, the midwife took her in. Brat becomes her apprentice and is paid by being fed and to sleep in a warm place. Lastly brat, now known as Alyce, learns a valuable lesson. She learns never to give up and to try, try, try again. As you can see, The Midwifes Apprentice is a great book and it also teaches many lessons. So read this book to find out what happens to Alyce in this fantastic book!!!

Middle Ages Medicine.......2007-06-07
It just seemed like the little girl was in the right place at the right time. She was about twelve or thirteen years old and had never remembered having any sort of family. One night to keep warm, she huddled into a pile of waste and animal dung and slept there. In the morning she was found by the village's midwife, a woman who helped to deliver babies with a combination of herbs and magic. She needed someone to carry supplies and do some of her dirty work, and so she took on the little girl, naming her Beetle.
This story takes place during the Middle Ages, before medicine was as developed as it is today. Much of the midwife's work was mystical instead of scientific. Although the midwife guards her secrets carefully, Beetle finds herself learning just by watching, how to bring a baby into the world. One night after the midwife has given up on a woman and left, Beetle stays behind with her and helps her have a successful birth. Soon another woman recommends Beetle. She finds she can't help this woman, though, and she becomes discouraged and angry at herself. She runs away from the village and finds a new job working at an inn. But will this life at the inn be enough for this little girl who once helped to bring babies into the world?
I liked the little side plots, like the story about the devil walking the town and leading the townsfolk to all sorts of bad things, and the story about Edward. I liked the people at the inn and the way they treated the little girl, especially Magister Reese.
I didn't like the major turnaround in attitude that the midwife had from most of the book to the very end, when she was very complimentary toward Beetle.
A GREAT HISTORICAL FICTION BOOK TO READ!.......2007-04-07
The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman is an exciting Middle Age historical fiction book. It is about a homeless 12-13 year old girl with only the name "Brat" found in a dung pile at a village to keep warm. A midwife comes and after coldly saying that only workers get food, Brat eagerly says she'll work for the midwife for food and shelter. Seeing that the child is wise enough to use the heat from the dung pile, the midwife accepts Brat as her apprentice. And from that day on, she was known as the midwife's apprentice. She finds out her midwife's name is Jane and her job is to deliver babies. Although the midwife greedily tries to hide her skills, Brat learns a few of them. She is ignorant at the beginning, and scared of the midwife. She does the usual chores everyday: starting the fire, sweeps the cottage's dirt floor, sprinkles it with water, and other dull chores. She also befriends an orange cat that listened to Brat's complaints and sometimes sympathetically rubbed against Brat's leg. Sometimes, she helped the midwife and gave her supplies while the midwife delivers babies. She even makes a name for herself: Alyce. Alyce gradually gains more confidence and wit inside of herself. One time, she even delivers a baby without the midwife's help. But when Alyce fails at an important task, she runs away, thinking she is stupid to fail at that assignment and wanders away to an inn. She then starts to work there and becomes an inn girl. She tries to work as hard as she can. Alyce finally has the three things she always wanted in her life: "a full belly, a contented heart, and a place in this world" when working at the inn. She also gains some knowledge, from the help of a man called Magister Reese. She is grateful to work here, because many people are kind to her, unlike Jane Sharp. She overhears a conversation between Jane and Magister Reese. She then thinks about her place in the world, and decides to go back and become the midwife's apprentice again. This book teaches you many lessons, including to never give up and the meaning of survival.
The Midwife's apprentice........2007-03-21
In "The Midwife's apprentice" there is a homeless girl that usually sleeps in a dung heap. She has no name everyone is mean to her and calls her "brat" and/or "dung beetle". She has no family and her only friend is a cat. She starts working for a midwife (a person who helps people with birth). She works for food and shelter. One day she finds one of her friends in a hole with a pregnat cow and helps the boy comfort the cow while it was giving birth. So now she knows a little about about people giving birth. After a while she meets a little boy she calls edward and tells him to go work. So he does. She never saw him for a while. So one day when the midwife was helping another person she helps the millars wife give birth and suceeds. Then she helps another person and fails she thinks now that she is stupid and can't do anything and runs away. She finds a hotel and starts working there for shelter. Awhile later shes goes back to the village to see edward. She figures she should go back to the village and live there so she does. She asks the midwife if she can work for her once more. This all took place in the 1600s.
My Opinion:
My opinion is that the book was okay but it had sort of a bad ending. My favorite character was the main one (Alyce). I would recommend this book to people wanting to now about the Medevil ages. There were some boring parts and bad parts but overall it was good.

Book Description
A Life in Hiding
When the German army occupied Holland, Annie de Leeuw was eight years old. Because she was Jewish, the occupation put her in grave danger-she knew that to stay alive she would have to hide. Fortunately, a Gentile family, the Oostervelds, offered to help. For two years they hid Annie and her sister, Sini, in the cramped upstairs room of their farmhouse.
Most people thought the war wouldn't last long. But for Annie and Sini -- separated from their family and confined to one tiny room -- the war seemed to go on forever.
In the part of the marketplace where flowers had been sold twice a week-tulips in the spring, roses in the summer-stood German tanks and German soldiers. Annie de Leeuw was eight years old in 1940 when the Germans attacked Holland and marched into the town of Winterswijk where she lived. Annie was ten when, because she was Jewish and in great danger of being cap-tured by the invaders, she and her sister Sini had to leave their father, mother, and older sister Rachel to go into hiding in the upstairs room of a remote farmhouse.
Johanna de Leeuw Reiss has written a remarkably fresh and moving account of her own experiences as a young girl during World War II. Like many adults she was innocent of the German plans for Jews, and she might have gone to a labor camp as scores of families did. "It won't be for long and the Germans have told us we'll be treated well," those families said. "What can happen?" They did not know, and they could not imagine.... But millions of Jews found out.
Mrs. Reiss's picture of the Oosterveld family with whom she lived, and of Annie and Sini, reflects a deep spirit of optimism, a faith in the ingenuity, backbone, and even humor with which ordinary human beings meet extraordinary challenges. In the steady, matter-of-fact, day-by-day courage they all showed lies a profound strength that transcends the horrors of the long and frightening war. Here is a memorable book, one that will be read and reread for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
A Struggle to Strive.......2007-03-30
I recommend this book, The Upstairs Room to anyone who likes a good book. This book takes place during the Holocaust. I think this book is the best, I have ever read. It was full of excitement, and history. It tells about a little girl and her sister who have to go into hiding with different families. If you read and like the Diary of Anne Frank you will love this book. The diary of Anne frank was a true story and this is also a true story it's based on the girls life.
The Upstairs Room .......2007-03-13
The Upstairs Room, by Joanna Riess is an interesting book. The book takes place in the time of the holocaust. Annie and her family are Jewish, so they are desperate to find safety and refuge. Annie and her sister, Sini, are sent to live with a non-Jewish family of farmers. Each passing day Annie and Sini get more and more restless, hoping for the war to stop. Sometimes while reading the book you might feel as though you are going to fall asleep, but then at other parts you can't seem to put down the book! Joanna Riess used too much description; also the plot never seemed to move on. For instance, in one part of the book it went on for pages, describing what Annie saw out the backroom window. In almost half of the book, The Upstairs Room, Annie and her sister, Sini, were in the upstairs room of the Oosterveld's house. However, when it did move on it was fascinating! In another part of the story the Germans came to the Oosterveld's house looking for Jews. This is a book about the war through the eyes of a little girl, sitting in a room all day waiting for the war to end, waiting to be free. It's inspiring and heart warming to all. This book has some inspiring moments and some snooza-paloza parts. The Upstairs Room has its boring moments and its exiting and thrilling moments. Overall The Upstairs Room is a fine book. Ages 10 and up.
The upstairs room.......2007-02-07
There is this girl named Annie who is Jewish and has to go hiding in someone elses home because Hitler hates Jews and is in charge at that time. Annie and her sister Sini go and live with the Hanninks for a while because a German suspects that Mr. Hannink is hiding Jews. Mr. Hannink sends Annie and Sini to go and live with the Oostervelds who are really nice people. Annie finds out that the Allies and is soon going to be free. Opoe, Johan, and Dienjte (the people who took care of Annie and her sister )went to go see the Canadians. Sini got on top of the tanks and started kissing the soldiers after that she went home. Annie comes back after a few years and brought her kids and remembered the war and started to cry. I really enjoyed this book although it was cruel how the Germans treated the Jews.
Life in Hiding!.......2006-11-28
This book, unlike other books about this topic, has a happy ending, which I like. It has thrilling parts, like when the German soldiers came and searched the Oostervelds' house. It was a short, easy read that you could put down, but not abandon. If you are interested in the topic of WWII you would like this book.
the upstairs room!.......2006-11-28
I would only recommend this book to people who want an easy read. This is because it was boring, every page was the same and there was little excitement. You always knew what was going to happen next, the author's way of writing was very plain and there was little detail. Every chapter was about living in hiding and how bored they got. Once in awhile something exciting happened, like the German soldiers came to the house. It was hard to concentrate because I didn't find the book interesting. Also, I didn't find any connections to the characters. They were both older. Also, I have never hid with my life on the line. I would recommend this book to people looking for something easy to ready, with little excitement.

Great intro to Greek Mythology.......2007-08-16
I bought this book for my 5 year old and it hooked her right away. After a brief explanation of "how it all got started", there is approximately one page devoted to each god/goddess and at the top of each page it mentions who the parents are which is great to give a youngster an idea of how all these gods, goddesses and mortals fit together.
The picturess captured her attention and the level of detail is just enough so that she remembers the salient qualities of each character. After having read through this many times, I feel she will be more than ready to handle the next level of detail. If they only had Greek Myth. action figures, she'd be in heaven (or, I guess, Mt. Olympus)!
Perfect.......2007-03-14
This item was exactly what i ordered in the exact condition that i ordered it in. Would definitly do business with seller again! Thank you
The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus By Aliki.......2006-11-07
This is by the far the best book I have foud that explains the creation according to the Greeks. I have used it in my high school classroom as well as my junior high and it is always a hit. This book contains the origins of the universe starting with mother earth (Gaea) and father sky (Uranos), the birth and the reign of the Titans and the reing of the Olympians Gods when they took over the earth. It aslo gives a great and thorough introduction of each of the 14 Olympian gods that reign upon Olympus. The pictures are amazing. The whole book is a work of art!
D'AULAIRES BOOK OF GREEK MYTHS.......2005-12-31
It is a beautiful book. I really like the picture of The Birth of Athena. The Athena in it is so cute. It has stuff like Gaea, Cronus and Rhea, Hestia and Zeus, Hades and so much more. You should read about Aphrodite and Eros (Cupid). Buy this book for any child. I am 7 and I love it. Enjoy this wonderful any age book.
Great for kids.......2005-07-11
This is a great way to introduce kids to the stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. I remember reading this book as a kid time after time. To this day I am still fascinated by Greek Mythology.

Book Description
On John's visits to Grandpa's house, his blind grandfather shares with him the special way he sees and moves in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A Different Vision.......2007-01-15
John is a young boy who loves his grandparents dearly. His grandfather cannot see, yet he shows John how he compensates. He likes to whittle and play the banjo and shares these gifts with his grandchild. Man and boy love nature walks, and it is John's grandfather who can recognize the sound of any bird. He teaches John about nature and John forgets that his grandfather cannot see.
His grandmother shows him how they serve meals; she tells the boy's grandfather where each dish is by using a clock face as a guide, e.g. "the peas are at 4:00 on your plate, the steak is at 7:00, etc."
This is a beautiful, loving and very moving story about grandparental bonds and different ways of learning and sharing.
Thoughtful story.......2005-07-29
Wanted to get this for my grandson as my husband and I have vision problems. Great book.
Well-written, realistic story.......2002-11-06
This is a very nicely written story about a boy and his grandfather, who is blind. It portrays a close, loving relationship between the two, and explains in a very simple and positive way how the grandfather perceives the world without his visual sense. The accompanying drawings are simple and artistic. It is so difficult to find realistic, beautiful books for children, but this one is absolutely wonderful. I give it my highest recommendation.
A real lesson to be learned.......2000-04-04
This wonderful book about relying on your senses when you are blind demonstrates that blind people can lead a productive life. Grandpa shares his zest for life with his grandson, John. At first John does not understand how his grandpa is able to do all that he does. Grandpa shares his secret. As a preservice teacher I've used this book to talk about aging and its effects with my students. We also talk about what we can do to help others who have disabilities. This is an excellent book to allow children to examine their thoughts on older people and disabilities.
Book Description
White-tailed deer hunters working public lands know the competition to bag big bucks is tough. Fortunately, there is a powerful--and underutilized--tool available to all hunters that can dramatically increase success in the field: The U.S.G.S. topographical map. By learning to read "topo maps" and understanding how deer relate to their landscape, hunters can learn to consistently put themselves in a position to bag trophy whitetails.
Author Brad Herndon explains the basic concepts of using topographical maps effectively and implementing sound terrain hunting strategies in this new must-have guide. From inside corners and double inside corners to the perfect funnel and mastering the wind, readers will get a better concept of using the wind and understanding topographical maps.
Illustrations show details of how deer move, where the hunter should place his stand, and how to use the wind to ensure a successful whitetail hunt.
* Increase the odds of bagging a trophy whitetail with a topographical map * Features tactics for implementing sound terrain hunting strategies * Includes detailed illustrations

Clears up the muddy water.......2006-09-04
I've hunted since the 60's. I got serious about Whitetails around 92'.
I talk to a lot of hunters and read a lot of books and watch videos and spend as much time as possible in the woods. Mr. Herndon's book has started to make everything gel in my mind.
As I read and think about this book I keep going over successful hunts I've had. Now, I am able to determine why they were successful and focus on more success in the future by using the stratagies discussed in this book.
There is no replacement for time in the woods and experience. But this book will definitely introduce structure and logic, to where and how to hunt instead of just instinct.
What I love about deer hunting is there is always something new to learn. And, of course, the adrenaline rush. Deer and especially Trophy bucks just aren't always predictable, too many variables, but this book will help organize all of your whitetail wisdom.
Advanced Mapping.......2006-06-21
Finally! An excellent book I can't imagine any serious hunter not owning! Before reading this book, it took me years of mistakes and hours of wasted time in the wrong spots to hunt. It all makes sense when I compare my few encounters of success, with the great information provided in this well-written book. I can't wait to see an "Advanced Mapping" edition!!!! Please Brad, share more of this great advice!
The Master of Topography........2006-06-13
Brad Herndon is a master at using the terrain to tag whitetailed deer. Before reading this book, I knew whitetails used terrain funnels to travel, but I did not understand how to recognize them. All of that changed when I read 'Mapping Trophy Bucks.' I can now view a topo map of an area I've never set foot on and pick out the best places for a hunt. My deer sightings have gone up tenfold!!
If you want to understand how whitetails relate to the terrain, and how to read a topographical map, this is an absolute must read!!
Best deer hunting book I have read........2006-05-12
I have own and have read countless books on deer hunting. Most say exactly the same things. "Hunt scentfree", "Stay all day", "The rut is the best time to hunt". If you deer hunt at all this is not new information. THis book mentions this information but it treats it like common knowledge and focuses on terrain and deer behavior as it is affected by the terrain. It has the absolute best explainations of various wind conditions I have seen. In short, this book is the first to have a signifigant impact on my hunting. I can't wait to apply this information to stand location and scouting. I have hunted the same area for 10+ years and will enter the woods this year as a completely different hunter.
Excellent book!.......2006-03-24
Excellent book that changed the way for me to start hunting in the best way you could ever imagine!. Basics and advance tool to analyze and be prepared for your hunting time.

Book Description
The land I love was lost to me forever.
These stories are my memories....
Huynh Quang Nhuong grew up in the highlands if Vietnam, next to the jungle teeming with wildlife. Encounters with tigers, wild hogs, and deadly snakes were as much a part of his life as tending the rice fields while on the back of his pet water buffalo, Tank. Here are fifteen tale that will transport you into a world of lush beauty and terrible danger -- and a way of life that is gone forever.
Customer Reviews:
Best childrens book.......2007-03-15
I have bought at least 10 copies of this book thru the years. I give one to all my friends with children 8+ years. The stories are truly amazing and great for adults as well.
Great read-aloud!.......2006-07-14
We loved this book! My kids begged me NOT to finish our read-aloud time! We were glued to this book and ended up reading it a lot quicker than expected. It is graphic and true to life...read to young ones with caution!
Realistic to an extreme........2006-01-04
I am the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and my entire life I have grown up hearing stories of how dreadful it was to be there and how scary it was to be in a foreign land. Quang Huynh gave me a new perspective on this foreign land and made me see it as a very unique place with his relationships with his animals, family, and insight into his culture. This book was terribly sad, and at times it is a bit too real for one to handle. It is very well written and the stories are captivating. I reccomend everyone read it for a rare insight on Vietnam before the war.
The land I lost , written by Huynh Quang Nhuong( Author).......2004-01-16
This Adventure story is full of dangerous fun and sorrow. Huynh Quang Nhuong lives in a small hamlet (village)in the central high lands of vietnam. The hamlet he lives in has a jungle on one side in which they must watch for jungle cats, lone hogs and the most dangerous the horse snake. And on the other is a river which Crocodiles live in. Many of the crocodiles are man eaters like mister short. In the begin of the story you meet Tank the Water bufflo. Tank isn't your regular water bufflo. He is bred between a lowland female because it would be patient and A moutainous bull so it would have the fierce fighting able.
The reason I choose this book was because love the outdoors. when I six years old I live in a village in Alaska and I hunted and fished all the time.
the land i lost........2003-12-18
The book I read is about the author's life. The author tells us about his experience with animals he met. The setting is a village where the author has lived. Anyway there is very important animal called Tank. Tank is a friend of the author but it's not human it's a cow.
There are some dangerous animals, too. The author describes his adventures and his story very nicely to make people know what's going on in the book. My opinion about this book is great. I liked his adventure, the other stories from his friend, etc. if you are interested in animals then you should read this before any other books.
