Book Description
No adults, no permit, no river map. Just some "borrowed" gear from Discovery Unlimited, the outdoor education program Jessie and her new companions have just ditched. Jessie and the others are having the time of their lives floating beneath sheer red walls, exploring unknown caves and dangerous waterfalls, and plunging through the Grand Canyon's roaring rapids. No one, including Troy, who emerges as the group's magnetic and ultimately frightening leader, can forsee the challenges and conflicts.
What will be the consequences of their reckless adventure?

Title- Down River
Author- Will Hobbs
Publisher- Barton Double Dell Books for Young Readers
Copyright- 1991

No adults, no permit, no river map, just some "borrowed" gear from Discovery Unlimited. That's how their adventure began. Seven different teens set out by themselves in the Grand Canyon not knowing what will happen. They all have their own different problems and learn many new things about themselves and about each other.
I'd have to say that I don't have a favorite part of this book because I liked it all the same; it was really adventurous and exciting.
The theme of this book I would say is be thankful for what you have. I think this because in the book one of the teens named Jesse goes to the summer camp Discovery Unlimited angry at her parents and she doesn't really care about anything.
I really like how this book had a lot of adventure and action. I wouldn't have changed anything about this book. I think people who should read it are ones that really like adventure or action.
Great book for reluctant readers.......2007-05-10
Outdoor action, adventure, thrills - reluctant readers will really like this book. Jesse and her new friends have decided to ditch the outdoor adventure trip they signed up for and strike out on their own. Helicopters and searchers are looking for the renegade group everywhere. Meanwhile, serious problems start to develop within the group. Will they make it back to safety or have their foolish choices doomed them? This is a great book to get teenagers hooked on because Will Hobbs has written many more great books for them to continue reading.
Down River.......2007-04-06
Down River
Down River is a book about troubled decent teens going to a camp. The problem is a mean camp consoler who is giving the kids a hard time, and the kids are sick of it. So the teens steal the camp and are heading towards the Grand Canyon. When they get their, they sail the Colorado River. But soon in the adventure turns into a disaster. Bad weather comes while the kids are sailing and they are stranded in the middle of the river. I think the book was.
Downriver, a review by Allison, Kevin, and Hannah!.......2007-03-13
"Downriver!"
Running the rapids of the Grand Canyon, seven kids find adventure, friendship, and themselves. Will Hobbs writes a thrilling survival book called Downriver, which is similar to Hatchet, by Gary Paulson, but with its own twists and turns. This book is similar to Hatchet, but there are seven kids who must work together, instead of one who must work alone. Eight kids are sent to Discovery Unlimited or as they call it "Hoods in the Woods," steal equipment and take a joy ride on the Colorado River. After one bails, it's down to them to overcome their fears and this obstacle. After getting tossed around like luggage in the Colorado River, these kids have to take it up a notch. Not only was the river a problem, but they were doing this illegally with people chasing after them. Will Hobbs uses dialogue and thoughts to bring out the life in the characters, and also uses sensory images.
Will Hobbs is a tremendous author using descriptive language, and strong adjectives to get the reader really into the book. To show this, he has many awards in his trophy case. Some of these are the Notable Book Award, Best Book for Young Adults, Teachers' Choice Awards, and the Regional Book Award. But the only reason he has won this many awards is because his books are a captivating read. The idea for this book came out of Will Hobbs' own experiences. He got this idea because he has gone rafting in the Grand Canyon ten times and wanted to share his love of the Canyon with young readers. We recommend this book to anyone who loves a little excitement, adventure and suspense. Kids from ages 9 to 14 would enjoy this novel. Will Hobbs created a thrilling survival that will lead people to believe that good can come out of bad.
Downriver.......2006-10-16
Would you ride a raft with extreme water or would you climb a very slippery? Would you even any of them? This book is about kinds that think that they are so tough but have so many fears, and not even willing to tell anybody about it. Five kids go on an adventure that will leave them scarred for life. Some books are hard to come by, and this book is one of them. One of the characters on this book that pop out to me was a girl named Star. She is always joking, singing, and all other crazy stuff, but when it comes to helping others she is shy. So like I said before you can be very outgoing but have so many insecurities and not say anything to anybody. The more and more you read you see that star is getting over her shyness. This book is the one to when you feel stressed and insecure I give this book five stars. My recommendation is the best.

The Handbook covers most of the medical emergencies one must be prepared to face while recreating off the beaten path. For example: Your mountain biking partner crashes and is sitting in the trail with blood on his face from a scalp wound. What do you do? "Your first instinct is to wipe the blood away and help him up. This is a perfectly natural reaction, but it's dead wrong. Stabilize his neck until you are certain there is no spine injury or other major body system problem, then worry about the laceration." Or: You're caught in an electrical storm while backpacking. Now what? "In the field, the best tactic is to squat with your feet together as low as you can, ideally on your foam pad or backpack, which will help insulate you from ground current...Theoretically, there is a safety zone on the ground about 45 degrees out from the top of a tall object." Covering general emergency medical procedures as well as specific symptoms and accidents--everything from avalanches to snakebites to hypothermia--the Handbook is well-organized, thorough, and practical. But like any useful first-aid guide, it also discusses proper preventative measures and responsible outdoors behavior.
Book Description
Treat everything from a sprain to a life-threatening injury; updated with the latest techniques.

Most have for campers........2007-01-17
After the course with Wilderness Medical Associates, I bought the book to have as a referance. It became much more as I learned more then I thought. It is a book that anyone going into the wilderness should have.
Outward bound wilderness first aid handbook.......2002-01-29
An excellent book. Rather than discussing different catagories of injuries and medical issues peice-meal, it presents basic underlying principles and a system for approaching accidents and medical issues then discusses accidents through that system. It is the most cohesive, integrated wilderness first aid text I have come accross. It uses simple language, and gets the job done without being overly technical (but it is not dumbed-down). It is so accessible and well put together you will actually pick it up and refer back to it (with ease). It is simply a very practical and clear book on wilderness medicine.
provides in-depth understanding of body systems and effects........1999-08-29
This book is simple for the layman to understand. Provides good detail into how the body reacts to wounds, infection, loss of blood etc. Educates the reader to understand the body systems which makes proper treatment understandable and predictable. No more trying to memorize what to do for this injury or that.

Through storytelling, scholarship, and first-person accounts, this book describes Hahn's schools, his view on service, chalenge, adventure, and the belief that students have more in them than they realize. Readers will note that many of Expeditionary Learning's design principles have their origin in Hahn's schools.

Book Description
Fifteen-year-old Linc Marani is from the wrong side of twenty-second century L.A.'s tracks. Everyone he knows is addicted to dope, booze, and the violence that masquerades as bravado in life on the streets. When a chance at some cold hard cash is offered to him by a slick associate in a fancy Cadillac, Linc jumps at the bait, only to find himself sentenced to a juvenile labor camp when the heist goes sour.Labor camp, to Linc, means an aching, dawn-to-dusk bootcamp-style grind with no hope of escape or parole. He is about to give up and head out for a precisely regimented and miserable future when a mysterious psychologist offers him the chance of a lifetime. Can Linc overcome one of the worst neighborhoods on Earth by proving his worth on a mission beyond the stars?Outward Bound is the sixth book in the Jupiter series. Patterned after the inspiring coming-of-age novels that Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov used to write, the Jupiter series has laid claim to that same imaginative drive and skillful storytelling that has delighted generations of science fiction readers worldwide.

Outward Bound Good Cyberpunk Book.......2002-12-02
Outward Bound
Outward Bound is an excellent science fiction book for either the science fiction fan or anyone looking for a good novel. The book is a short read that seems to go by rather quickly, which is a first for a slow reader like myself. The chapters are fairly short, but make the book easier to follow. I was definitely surprised that the book kept my attention, I could hardly set the novel down.
Linc Marani is a troubled teen who wants nothing more than to live the fast life. He runs into problems with the law and is turned to an alternative boot camp for youth. There he faces the adversity of his new and mysterious life. He interacts with many characters and problems, such as Angelo, the buddy, and Arvin, the bully. Tension rises when Arvin and Linc continue to butt heads and neither are willing to back down. The central theme is whether Linc will be able to turn his meaningless life around into something that is worth more than anything on this planet.
This is an uplifting story that gives hope that there are better things out there, showing that hard work and self control can get you somewhere in life. The technology is a little hard to follow but gets the point across. I was intrigued throughout the novel, this is the best science fiction book I have read, and I would rate it above the well known novels such as Blade Runner, Snow Crash, and Shockwave Rider. James P. Hogan's Outward Bound is just an entertaining, feel good novel.

Light, pleasant YA novel.......2002-08-18
Hogan is one of my favorite hard-science sf writers. Here, he attempts a Heinleinesque juvenile novel, and does a pretty good job of it. This short book is a quick, light, pleasant read. It's pretty formulaic--an angel-with-a-dirty face kid from the wrong side of the tracks, right on the verge of going permanently bad, ends up in a tough-love bootcamp, which straightens him out. Nothing great, and certainly not for adults, but preteens should enjoy it.
uplifting.......2001-02-05
(Don't let the number of stars fool you. I only give the Bible a five. Four means I would *buy* this one.)
This is a fun read that is very upbeat. I have read it three times, checking it out of the library, and each time come away feeling better about the world. Good things can happen, even in a yucky future!
Linc (short for Lincoln?) really overcomes an awful background. Nice!
Good cyberpunk novel.......2000-12-05
Outward Bound by James P. Hogan is the sixth book in the Jupiter series. This book was relatively easy to follow for me, a college age reader who is still getting used to cyberpunk type novels. The story is predictably told in short intervals, but without any major jumps occurring in the flow of the plot. As with many other cyberpunk novels, Outward Bound's main character, Linc Marani, knows only a community of selfish, backstabbing individuals whose greatest enjoyment comes from the use of drugs. At first, Linc sees no wrong with life being this way. Also consistent with other cyberpunk novels is the ultimate struggle the main character has with the stagnant society he finds out he wants to escape from.
One striking difference, however, is Hogan's acute characterization of Linc. The fifteen-year-old Linc Marani has spent his whole life within a few city blocks, running around with the wrong crowd, trying to scrape up enough money to get him and his parents by. The reader is able to see Linc's character change for better or worse with the decisions he makes. The story centers around Linc's ability to find a meaning for his life and his place in the universe. Will Linc be able to overcome his rough start to life and find his niche, or will he continue spiraling toward nowhere?
Hogan's confusing descriptions of futuristic technology coupled with a somewhat predictable plot prevents the novel from being a personal favorite, but the topics and issues the story brings up makes it quite worthy of reading.

It's not every day you find a how-to guide that's laugh-out-loud funny--which is why, in addition to being a handy resource, The Outward Bound Backpacker's Handbook is such a treat. Author and mountaineer Glenn Randall entertains as he teaches, using witty accounts from a lifetime in the outdoors to illustrate lessons on packing light, planning a route, keeping warm in the cold, and steering clear of mosquitoes, bears, and poisonous plants. A beautiful alpine hike spoiled by "toilet paper flowers" along the trail highlights, for instance, the need for sanitation in the backcountry; a miserable, soggy night spent in a down sleeping bag shows the importance of choosing the right gear. Veteran backpackers will recognize the accuracy of Randall's advice (and even learn a few things), while greenhorns will find excellent instruction on the essentials, from reading a topographic map to cooking outdoors to crossing a mountain stream.
Randall devotes half the pages to shopping for gear, which might seem odd considering this is a book on exploring the great outdoors. But, as the author notes, choosing the right equipment can be half the battle. The Handbook addresses questions like: How warm a sleeping bag do you need? Is Gore-Tex gear really worth it? Why is cotton fabric a no-no in the outdoors? What are the pros and cons of internal-frame backpacks?
After covering equipment, the Handbook turns to outdoor instruction, offering advice on map-and-compass orienteering, selecting a campsite, purifying water, camping cleanly, hiking with children, and first aid (for a thorough examination of this last topic, try The Outward Bound Wilderness First-Aid Handbook). Throughout, Randall's tone remains laid-back and conversational, as if he were sharing his expertise around the campfire. Fellow mountaineer and Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer calls this "without question the best backpacking manual I've ever seen," and after reading The Outward Bound Backpacker's Handbook, you may well agree. --Demian McLean
Book Description
This manual includes instructions for everything from ecologically conscious trailside cooking to responsible trip-planning.

Something for everyone.......1999-11-27
It just goes to show, you can always learn something new.
That's what the author should use as a tag line. I thought I was pretty good with a map & compass, but I learned several faster, easier techniques from this book. This text is suitable for beginners to intermediates. It includes key info for people who've been delaying their first USGS map purchase, because they've been intimidated by the "experts" at their local outdoors store. You'll be happier with your next compass purchase if read this book FIRST. The section on GPS is brief but useful as a primer for a more specialized text on that subject. One of the trickier diagrams on declination **might** be wrong but the text is correct. Overall I was very pleased with this book.

Book Description
Outdoor learning leader Outward Bound USA (OB USA) will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2002. As part of their celebration they are releasing an updated edition of OB USA, originally published in 1981. Outward Bound is well-known for their courses in outdoor learning but few people understand the philosophy behind these programs. This book explains how OB USA founder Joshua T. Minor came to understand the teachings of Kurt Hahn considered a progressive educator in World War II Europe, and shows how the foundation of growing through experiencing the unfamiliar, the difficult and the adventurous, has created a company that has grown to embrace five separate wilderness schools, two urban centers, and several other sites in the United States.
This new edition will cover the same ground as the original book, plus two new chapters will be added that describe OB programs based on expeditionary learning (learning by doing) and where OB is headed for the new millennium.
Outward Bound programs can be found in the Peace corps training program, schools across the country, activities in colleges, programs in disadvantaged communities, and juvenile delinquency programs. An Outward Bound course includes: Wilderness Skills Training; Expeditionary Learning; Working in Small Groups; Environmental Stewardship; Solo experiences; High-Performance Team Dynamics; and Service. OB has developed many of their courses for use in public schools and have a thriving program. OB also has Outward Bound Professional programs to create positive and lasting change in the workplace by improving individual group and organizational effectiveness.

The definative history Outward Bound in the USA.......2003-07-03
This great, classic history of Outward Bound in the United States has been updated to include the newer parts of Outward Bound including Expeditionary Learning, the highly successful school reform initiative.
One of the authors, Josh Miner, was responsible for bringing Outward Bound to the United States. He was there when it all started and his stories are so real and down to earth. This book is a must read for any one who has interest in Outward Bound or outdoor adventure in general.

Outstanding tool for teacher planning........1999-08-21
As a veteran teacher, I feel fortunate to have this book in my possession. It provides the best form for planning good units that I have ever seen. Both well-explained and supplied with excellent and varied examples showing best practices, this book is definitely worth your while if you are an educator. The explanation of how to use the format, the examples of strong units, and the form itself are easy to understand and very stimulating. Honestly, after reading the book for about two hours, I brainstormed three great math units in about 3 hours, coming up with a much more interesting and comprehensive approach to the units than I would have otherwise.
