Book Description
An engaging and often amusing account of the little known use of artists, designers, and architects as army, navy, and civilian camouflage experts (called "camoufleurs") during World Wars I and II. Described and illustrated are documented attempts--some ingenious, others bizarre--at "fooling the eye" by such prominent artists (from France, England, the US, and Germany) as Abbott H. Thayer, Jean-Louis Forain, Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac, Jacques Villon, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Norman Wilkinson, Everett Warner, Sherry Fry, Barry Faulkner, Homer Saint-Gaudens, John Singer Sargent, Frederic Waugh, Edward Seago, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Charles Burchfield, Oskar Schlemmer, Franz Marc, Edward Wadsworth, William Stanley Hayter, Roland Penrose, Julian Trevelyan, Eric Sloane, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Gyorgy Kepes, Jon Gnagy, Arshile Gorky, Victor Papenek, and Ellsworth Kelly.
Illustrated by 120 vintage photographs, diagrams, and artworks, the text explains how the strategies used to conceal objects in nature and warfare are based on the very same "unit-forming factors" that artists, designers, and architects use every day in the creation of paintings, prints, fonts, logos, page layouts, web sites, furniture, buildings, and so on.
Throughout the book, the author makes shrewd observations about the connections of art, design, and camouflage to such seemingly wide-ranging topics as Gestalt psychology, esthetics, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, psychoanalysis, kindergarten, creativity, the Bauhaus, Frank Lloyd Wright, humor, dream analysis, Rockwell Kent, poetry, pickpockets, and sleight of hand.
Of additional interest are a camouflage timeline, an account of the etymology of the word camouflage, and a 10-page bibliography, the largest ever compiled on the subject of art and camouflage.

Cool!!.......2002-03-15
In this book in the wing commander series we see the confederation winding down from the kilraith war. All is not rosy because the war has not stooped on the border worlds and their leaders feel that this is being allowed to happen to keep them dependent on the rest of the confederation. Is that really what is happening? Well you have to read it to find out
Somewhere between "kinda bad" and "sorta not good".......2002-02-03
Not a great paring. William and Andrew Keith are alright, but Forstchen needs to be stopped. Please don't let him litter any more Wing Commander books with his hackneyed dialogue and one-dimensional characters. The words "civilized warfare" disqusted me more then anything. War may be occasionally fought for a good cause, but NEVER fool yourself into thinking it's civilized (even if it's fought in 3068 or whenever the hell this story takes place. Other then that, False Colors is probably one of the better books in the Wing Commander universe. Better then Fleet Action and The Price of Freedom, but then again, that's not saying much.
The end of the beginning.......2001-04-10
This book is set just after the end of the Kilrathi war. Kilrah's surface has been utterly devastated by the Temblor bomb. The offical representatives of the Kilrathi government surrendered; the other clans split and began fighting amongst themselves. Once again, (as in the truce of 2668) the war weary people of the Confederation have been quick to demobilise and declare peace. But a Kilrathi warlord has other plans. It falls to Admiral Tolywn and a small group of brave men and women to hold the front line.
Something happened to Geoffrey Tolwyn in the years between the Kilrathi war and the Border Worlds conflict (the setting for Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom) that dramatically changed the admiral, with disastrous consquences for mankind. This book offers the first hint of what caused a man of Tolwyn's stature and accomplishment to fall from grace. That is a small part of the book, however, and even if you aren't interested in Tolwyn specifically you can still enjoy the storyline. This book is far superior to Forstchen's prequel "Action Stations", which I didn't rate very highly.
I look forward to the next book, which will hopefully bridge the gap between Heart of The Tiger and The Price of Freedom.
Great.......2000-03-28
I thought this book was great. It was full of action and is really a good addition to the series. At the beginning it really didn't seem to fit in and the middle was a little slow, but the ending was superb.
A Terrific Book that fills the gap between WC3 & WC4.......2000-03-22
This book is very well done and fills in the gap between Wing Commander Heart of the Tiger & W.C. The Price of Freedom. It also brings some of our Heroes back from W.C. Fleet Action & W.C. End Run. This is a great series & you'll enjoy it even if you don't play the computer games...
Book Description
Jack Olsen's
Last Man Standing is the gripping story of Geronimo Pratt, war hero and community leader, who was framed by the FBI in one of the greatest travesties of justice in American history.
Geronimo Pratt did not commit the murder for which he served twenty-seven nightmarish years. As a UCLA student, though, he had led the Los Angeles Chapter of the Black Panther Party, and became a target of the FBI. Here is the spellbinding saga of Pratt, his heroic lawyers, Johnnie Cochran and Stuart Hanlon, and the Reverend James McCloskey, who overcame all the odds to bring the truth to light and free Geronimo.
Customer Reviews:
can't completely review this item yet as I haven't finished reading it, but so far it's good........2007-02-22
I wanted to know the real scoop for years on the Geronimo Pratt case. Although I'm not yet finished reading the book, it is very obvious that Mt. Pratt got screwed, like so many others caught up in the "good old USA" system. Obviously this one is a case of racial prejudice, but it could have just as easily been some other kind of prejudice. It is clear that the concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is just a nice theory that should be strictly adhered to but rarely is. The presumed guilt is clear from the get go on the part of the police. It continues on to the top with lies and deception on the part of the police to get a conviction at any cost, especially with regard to the truth. It's frightening and a relief to know it's not me. But next time it could be me, or anyone who gets targeted by individuals in a position of power, who have no integrity, and don't give a hoot about the constitution of the US.
Tragedy and Triumph.......2006-04-20
This is certainly one of the best books I've ever read. Jack Olsen did an outstanding job of weaving together all the facts in a highly readable narrative of one of the most blatant chapters of injustice in 20th century legal history.
I already had considerable knowledge of the case before I read this book. In the early 1990s, the case was being publicized again. I was a reporter for Wave Newspapers in Los Angeles and journeyed with a co-worker to the state prison at Tehachapi where Pratt was then being held and we interviewed him. I then wrote several stories about his situation.
Pratt was imprisoned for 27 years for a crime he clearly did not commit. The prosecution was part of the FBI's notorious COINTELPRO operation-essentially a war against numerous dissenting groups in the 1960s including the Black Panther Party. As Olsen makes clear, in Pratt's case this also involved LAPD and the L.A. County District Attorney's office.
Pratt was convicted of the December 1968 Santa Monica tennis-court murder of school teacher Caroline Olsen. There was considerable doubt about the credibility of key-witness Julius Butler, who had a previous falling out with Pratt, and was later proven to be an informant. (When I was a reporter, I actually contacted Butler. He yelled that he was "tired of this" and hung up on me.) Plus, numerous other Panthers could have confirmed he was at a meeting in Oakland the day of the murder but most wouldn't testify because of a severe split in the ranks.
Appeal after appeal was turned down despite more and more evidence being discovered pointing to Pratt's innocence. In all probability the crime was committed by two low-level Panther members to obtain money for drugs.
That ties in with the only complaint I would make about Olsen's book. He really glossed over the fact that the FBI and police campaign against the Panthers (which I am not defending) was not just because of their militant political rhetoric. They had a lot of criminal types within the group.
Regardless, this is an extraordinary book about another era and the governmental abuses of that time. Johnnie Cochran redeemed himself in my eyes by getting Pratt released. That was after he was involved in a travesty of justice, himself, by getting O.J. Simpson off. But that's another story.
The Cure for Your Despair.......2004-12-01
The courage and essential goodness of Geronimo Pratt, in spite of receiving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit, is truly inspiring. This is a wonderful book.
Amazing book, Amazing man.......2003-06-15
Geronimo Pratt had one of the most honorable and incredible lives I have ever heard of. This book documents his entire life, from is Morgan City childhood to his unjust incarceration for the murder of Caroline Olsen. I literally had trouble putting this book down. It is a great read for anyone interested in the judicial system, the FBI's COINTELPRO, the Black Panther Party, and racism in general. READ THIS BOOK!!!
One of the Best books I ever laid my hands on.......2003-02-20
This book should be mandatory reading for every black person when they turn 15 years old. To read what the gov't put this man through was utterly shocking. After you read this book read "The Judas Factor - The Plot to Kill Malcolm X." You'll be numb after reading these two books back to back.

Justice, southern American style..........2007-08-13
This book was on my "save" list for some time after I heard about it on NPR. Glad I finally ordered it. Another well-written, moving story about how unequal "justice" can be in this country. It's easy to get burned out and not want to deal with it, but stories like this remind us why we have to keep caring.
Touching, interesting, and honest.......2007-08-11
Calvin C. Johnson Junior's story shines a spotlight on the issues within the American criminal justice system, yet is story is also one of self-discovery. Together Johnson and Dr. Greg Hampikian write of a travesty with honesty and integrity. Even though this story has a happy ending, don't expect it to read like a novel. It deals with heavy topics that are handled without ever forgetting there are real people involved. The authors don't attempt to paint Johnson as a hero or a victim. They portray him as a human complete with flaws. At time he will infuriate you and at others touch your heart deeply. Telling someone's truth as it really was is a difficult job, but Johnson and Hampikian shine in Exit to Freedom.
Captivating.......2007-04-05
I first heard about Mr. Johnson's experience on NPR and immediately purchased the book. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I do not normally read autobiographies, but working in the judicial system, I was interested in reading what Mr. Johnson's experience was like; a black man, falsely accused of crimes he could not have committed and then being incarcerated for the entirety of his youth.
In one sense this was a heartbreaking tale of an educated young man's life being stripped away from him because of pride and prejudice. When I had learned that he went to trial in 1983 I was astounded by the blatant racism that still existed in Atlanta, Georgia, a city I thought was the mecca for Black progression and tolerance. Obviously I was wrong.
Mr. Johnson spent his entire youth in prison, among men that he himself admitted he would not be friends with if he were out on the street. Johnson had a college degree, came from an affluent family and knew how to work hard to get what he wanted. Unfortunately, like many of us when we are young, he made some dumb decisions and because of them got his name and face in the criminal justice system.
However, this book is not a tale of a life wasted, but how, even through the worst of times, a man overcame his anger, hatred and hopelessness and forgave those who had a hand in putting him behind bars. His recount of prison life is raw and graphic, but it also shows that the men behind bars are not animals and that each of us need forgiveness and friendship. The only part I found difficult to read was the recount of his trial. It absolutely infuriated me that a judge and jury could hold so much prejudice against a man because the color of his skin. The judge that presided over Mr. Johnson's case is now retired, but there were times I wanted to write the most brandishing letter admonishing him for not upholding the Judicial Code of Ethics. However, C.C. Johnson forgave, so must we.
This is a definite must read for anyone interested in the criminal justice system. It is an eye opener of how things can go wrong for a charged offender. But, like Mr. Johnson said, we must have laws and even with its imperfections, our system of justice is still the best in the world.
Exit To Freedom.......2006-09-25
To the authors: I just wanted to let you know how much the book moved me (enjoyed is clearly not the right word). Calvin's powerful, heartbreaking story is so eloquently written, I shared his frustration and anger over the idiocy of the bureaucracy that wrongly imprisoned him, and then read on with awe as his spirituality lead him out of the darkness. What an amazing human being - I am thrilled at his newfound happiness and full life. I have always been an opponent of the death penalty, and an advocate for prison reform, but if I had had any doubts about those convictions, your book would have wiped them out. Exit to Freedom should be put in the hands of every judge and DA in the country.
a must read.......2004-09-09
This is a great book, very well written and easy to read, and to add to all that it is a true story. If you want to read of a great case with Justice finally being done, you will want to read Exit to Freedom.

Book Description
I'm innocent... I didn't do it...It wasn't me!
It began with a brutal and senseless murder. Looking for a suspect, the police grabbed the first convenient person they spotted: a 15-year-old kid named Brent Butler. The cops figured they had it solved in record time. In just hours they had an eyewitness and the killer. Case closed. The police, prosecutors, courts, prisons and the press were all patting themselves on the back before an all-too pliant and applauding public.
Except for one thing: They all got wrong. As is proving more and more common-place in our nation, the justice system screwed up. But that was just the beginning. For Brent, his family and the rest of us, over the next year nothing -- nothing at all -- would ever be the same again.
First the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary, "Murder On A Sunday Morning," now Brent Butler speaks out in his own words. In shocking and graphic detail Brent describes his horrific ordeal from accusation to imprisonment and from trial to final exoneration. And the truth is more brutal than ever: The innocent are America's latest victims.
Customer Reviews:
A shocking and severe true story.......2004-06-07
They Said It Was Murder is the harrowing true story of Brenton Butler, a fifteen-year-old black man innocently accused of a brutal murder. When he agreed to cooperate with the police, he was falsely identified for the crime, and beaten into confessing. What followed was a nightmare of trial, imprisonment, and eventual exoneration when the truth of how the police and authorities utterly bungled the case came to light. The story that formed the basis of an Oscar-winning documentary is related in thorough detail, by the innocent accused himself. A shocking and severe true story of a travesty of justice, and a stark wake-up call to the deficiences in America's law enforcement system.
Book Description
To say the Bible is a Literary Work and Hermeneutics must be properly applied begins the mistake, and there are those that take this position. Genre cannot replace the Spiritual Question of the Authority of all Scripture. The Bible is unlike any typical book written by Man. It does not present itself to us for verification, or as an historical text for examination/questioning, philosophically. It is Spiritually and literally perspicuous! You either believe it or you do not believe it. That choice is given to every individual. I Corinthians 14: 36; "What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?" Based upon the current European description of people shown in Bibles and nearly all biblical materials, only black people can ask the question, where are we in the Bilble? And the anwser to that question is contained in the Holy Scriptures.
Customer Reviews:
Eye opener.......2006-11-09
This is a thought provoking book clear and concise scripturally sound. A book not solely based on what a man thinks but based on the word og God and backed by other authoritative books. One of the best books that I have read.
Why has this reality been kept secret for so long?.......2006-08-21
Finally, a well written credible account of the lineal descent of man, using direct quotes from the Bible! Thought provoking and enlightening...this is undeniably the best book I've read in a long time! The author's clear, concise style, combined with direct links to the actual biblical accounts, leaves the reader no room for further speculation! The book stresses the hows and why, so that readers acquire a genuine comprehension of the fundamental principles of the Bible. This manuscript should be required reading for seminary students and teachers alike. A book that undressed previous interpretations layer bay layer. I look forward to this author's next work!

The author is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a
U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) Retired. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S. Europe and Asia, and attended five universities during off duty hours State side and during overseas assignments. The effort earned in excess of 100 credit hours resulting in the award of an AA degree from the "University of Maryland" European Division.
After retiring from the US Army, his initial civilian employment was as a logistical supervisor with "Bendix Field Engineering" outside of Baltimore Md. Then he held a Government position, Property Administrator with the Defense Logistics Agency's Contract Management Command, Silver Springs, Md. Next assignment was with the US Navy's Naval Air Systems Command, VA, where he served as the senior Property Manager. Then he returned to the Defense Logistics Agency's Contract Management Command employed in the "Special contract [Black Box] office, retiring from Government employment in 1997.
He continued his writing education through completion of courses offered by the "Institute of Children's Literature" and a Free Lance Writing Course offered by "Hardcourt Learning Direct" before publishing his first book "Phil Duse Versus the Tyranny of DOD/DOJ and its Intelligence and Investigative Agencies". He has written or contributed to authorship of several logistics related manuals, published by the Department of Defense. He is also the author of "EEOC: The Real Deal" (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) and "New Short Stories and Three Hand Pinochle" before authoring this book "False Color of Authority" all published by Xlibris.
This is the third book he authored directed towards law-abiding people of the Western world, particularly teachers and students. It shares horrific experience of the author forced to deal with and intellectually counter unlawful actions of U.S. Government and local investigative entities. They continue [2006] to perpetrate an amalgamation of ruse scenarios in unlawful attempts to harm him. Why? For initiation of EEO complaints alleging improper activity in a top-secret contract oversight environment and filing a civil suit exposing the activity, as is his personal obligation and a constitutional right. The civil suit went all the way to the Supreme Court by "Writ of Certiorari, see EEOC: The Real Deal-Case No. 00-1437, CA-99-1400-A.
Ruses initiated by perpetrating entities are appropriately qualified in this book as the end-result of "dolt logic" pursued by "mental masturbators" pursuing old south habits from yesteryears. The activity in this regard, defined in its salacious detail, to expose the "bottom line" of how ruses are initiated and unwitting innocents engaged to assist in their propagation. The book also shares chilling events involving "Hit Men" in addition to exposing ongoing ruses intended to cause unwitting third parties to view the author in the most negative light that a ruse concoction can muster. Yes, this is the
U.S. Government's very apparent unwavering attempt to get this black-guy! An author and innocent law-abiding American who refuses to tap dance especially to a Quack or Dolt logic tune.
The story also recommends actions law-abiding citizens can undertake to expose those propagating unwarranted ruses and how to arrange daily activities to best mitigate Government/mental-masturbator attempts to entrap you in a ruse when staged in Air Ports, Class Rooms, Restaurants, Parking Lots, Elevators, Officer Clubs and similar innocuous surroundings. The proper response from law-abiding persons to Government ruse perpetrators, operating under false color of authority, is "KMA" [Kiss the part of anatomy where no sun can shine] would be the polite response.
In that the author is an unwitting victim of Government perfidy in this regard, he takes on the biblical persona of "David" to re
