5 out of 5 stars Fire Star.......2007-06-26

Another excellent book by Chris D'Lacey. And the BIG news is that this was NOT the last book in the series as had been reported. Book FOUR - The Fire Eternal - has been completed and is due for release in the UK in Sept 2007. I think it will be available in the US in March of 2008!

I can't wait! Check out his website for info on the new book, but beware, some of the things you 'thought' happened at the end of book 3, aren't quite what you think. :-)

Is it March yet???????

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!.......2007-05-06

My sons love this series! They have quickly read each one, and eagerly wait for the next to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-21

This is the third book in the "fire" trilogy from author Chris D'Lacey. My 10 year old daughter and I loved it! But it really leaves you wanting more and fortunately we learned from his web site that he is working on book number four "Fire Eternal" which should be released soon. These stories are about the legend of the dragons' firetear;the story of Gawain and Gweneviere and the polar bears. There is magic and mystery and adventure. A very good read for kids and parents alike.

4 out of 5 stars Dragons Rule.......2007-03-06

If you would like a dragon tooth for yourself; then you should read Fire Star.

This book is about a man named David trying to write book on the events that happen in the Canadian Artic. After David returned home everyone in the house including the dragons greeted him. In about the middle of the book David returns to the Artic because he receives an urgent message to return. The message contained information about a mysterious comet landing.

This book would have been better if there weren't many characters. There should have been at least three dragons and four main characters. The things I liked about this book that it is full of mysteries. I would recommend this book for people of the ages of ten to fifteen. I rated this book a four stars because of some of the boring parts.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Star was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-08

Do not read unless you have read the book or enjoy spoilers.
Fire Star was great!!! There were a lot of things I did not expect. Who knew that Liz had an ex boyfriend! Or that there is an alien race called the Fain that has no physical form whatsoever! I did not expect Tootega and Dr. Gergstrom would die. Three things I did not expect were that Gwilanna would get frozen in ice, Dr. Bergstrom is a polar bear (I think he was Thoran), and that Bonnington would turn into a tiger. The only part I don't like about this book is that David dies! Once again, Fire Star was great.

Dragonlance's dynamic duo--the inimitable Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman--continues to do no wrong, reviving the once-ailing world of Krynn with yet another solid book, the second in their War of Souls series. Which is not to say, of course, that Krynn itself is doing well. Far from it: as you might remember from the trilogy's debut, Dragons of a Fallen Sun, creepy Joan-of-Arc-type Mina is spreading the influence of her One God even further over the previously godless land. To top that off, the cursed magical shield protecting the Silvanesti crumbled with the death of the great green Cyan Bloodbane (who had been masquerading as an elf), and the hated Beryl has made a move on the Citadel of Light and the lands of the Qualinesti. And just in case you didn't read Fallen Sun, Weis and Hickman take great pains to bring you up to speed in the first chapter.

What follows in Dragons of a Lost Star is the satisfying resolution to most of these threads, although--like it or not--that means a lot of interplay among the elves. But a literally earth-shattering finale with Beryl in Qualinost amply makes up for it, and that's just the appetizer for the main dish: the true identity of Mina's mysterious One God is revealed at last. Throw in some typical Tas antics for good measure (you've got to love that Device of Time Journeying), and you can count on being left antsy for this trilogy's concluding installment. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

A mysterious force holds Krynn in thrall. A young woman, protected by her regiment of dark-armored knights, calls upon the might of an unknown god to bring victory to her army as it sweeps across the land. The souls of the dead rob the living of their magic. A dragon overlord threatens the very land the elves hold most dear.

Amidst the chaos, a band of brave and selfless heroes struggles against an immortal power that appears to thwart them at every turn. The encroaching darkness threatens to engulf all hope, all faith, all light.

The War of Souls rages on.

The New York Times bestselling hardcover now in paperback.

This latest title from Dragonlance cocreators Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is the sequel to the New York Times bestselling Dragons of a Fallen Sun. This paperback version contains a preview chapter from the upcoming conclusion to the trilogy, Dragons of a Vanished Moon.

3 out of 5 stars ...HE will return..........2007-02-16

...HE will return..., May 10, 2001
OH MY RAISTLIN!!!... I mean, OH MY GOD!!! (...sorry, I get those two confused sometimes...) I just came back from Borders and I am in shock! Why Laurana? Why have practically all of the original companions had to meet such tragic demises? Oh, and I don't want to get off on a rant here but now that "The One God" has been revealed, Raistlin will HAVE to come back and destroy this pathetic immortal; and NOT to "save the world" (I say that dripping with sarcasm) but to show that HE should be the one to rule Krynn. Keep those pompous dragons in line and show Mr. Dark Elf (Dalamar)how to REALLY bring magic back to Krynn. Well, I'm done ranting; I guess that I now have to wait A WHOLE YEAR to find out when the best character in all of Dragonlance's history will return in all his glory!!!... thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Harry Potter.......2006-03-18

Dragons of a Lost Star was, as the title says, better than Harry Potter. It's many twists and turns make you instantly want to read more.

I was a big fan of the "One God" and Mina during the beginning but the twist makes you want to scream at the book.

Gerard and Tas are both a little different. Tas was put in the story to make it funny but I didn't like him at all, he was so stupid in his decisions. Gerard was Gerard. Nothing much more I can say, he was a Knight for both sides.

The ending is so sudden it's hard to cope...

5 out of 5 stars To the One God.......2005-11-24

To the One God, its in you we thank for giving us Margaret and Tracy or should we look for another?
Once again we explore another fine addition to the Dragonlance volumes. The War of Souls is a fascinating ride to the return of the old world.
You will be thrilled to know that there is enough Tas in book 2 to keep you laughing and as always making sure nothing of your own has gone missing =)
Mina has returned and is proclaming and conquering in the name of the One God. Who is this one God whom grants powers beyond imgaination. Who is the God that causes men to fear and follow this Mina? The One God is none other than...ah read em!

5 out of 5 stars Great build up for for the third book of this trilogy........2005-08-02

Let me preface this by saying that I am a Dragonlance fanatic that owns every book. This trilogy has brought back the return of the gods of Krynn, which is a terrific decision by Weis and Hickman, and one that was somewhat overdue.
It is also, in my opinion, the best set of books since the Raistlin chronicles. Every book built towards the ending superbly, and I would recomend this trilogy as one of the best in the series.
The storyline gained momentum throughout and seldom had lulls of needless filler. It is also good to see the exchange from the heroes of the lance to the next characters that come to the forefront in the war of souls.I love the lance heroes but think that every avenue had been explored to further thier story, but that being said I would never wish that they be written out of future novels.
I became engrossed in the story and finished this book very quickly. I cannot wait to read the third book to see how the story plays out.

4 out of 5 stars Lost unless youve read the trilogy before this one.......2005-04-10

It is a good rounded book that "tries" to keep you guessing. Most people said they couldnt figure who "The One God" is but it tells you at the end, i figured out way before then, but i guess that i picked up on all the signs. Its a good sequal to the one before this because it carries on where the first one left off (Dragons of the fallen sun I beleive it was called).

5 out of 5 stars Dragon Prince.......2007-02-13

I dont care what anyone says the Dragon Prince books are a wonderful tale. Anyone and I do mean anyone would enjoy the entire tale of the prince and his witch wife. Melanie has woven such magic in these books. So if you get the chance get the entire series. Sit back with a cup of coffee and a tissue and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!.......2005-12-17

Skybowl was a great ending to the awesome Dragon Star series! You must first, of course, read the Dragon Prince series or risk being utterly confused and regretting not doing it later on, but still a great read. Melanie Rawn created characters that are complicated and indepth and a fantastic world to live in. Simply, this book and series is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy.

Be Warned!!: other reviews have spoilers that will really hurt the story if you know before hand. Do yourself a favor and tred lightly.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect ending.......2005-05-17

I loved this book a lot and reread the ending several times per year, just because of the spectacular way in which it was written. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers in that the two previous books were not as well written, especially after having enjoyed the first series so much. But this book was definitely worth plowing through the other two and it made the ending all the more poignant and dramatic. Just those last couple of chapters would have gotten six stars from me!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The Othes.......2005-03-18

I personally didn't like this book as much for the others. The ending had a lot to be desired and what's more I think Melanie has a tendency of being a little to hard on the male characters of her series. It strikes me as I've read all 6 of the books of this particular setting that she makes her male characters way too feminine. Not all of course and I also feel that she has this tendency of putting her own political views to much in these books.

My least favorite characters in the series was Ostvel and Alison, I couldn't see what Andry saw in her at all. Nothing was all that strong about her and she ran away at the slightest hint of power. Ostvel just gets on my nerves because he's just too perfectly annoying!

What's more is that I've noticed something that I've disliked about this particular series.

1. Sionell was way to harsh on Pol and seemed to blame him for what was also her own decision as well.

2. Melanie Rawn is more than a little sexist. I found very few female characters making any mistakes at all, not to mention more often than not I found that I'd never respond like they do to the way that the male characters respond. Maybe it's just me however since I don't know every guy out their. Even if a guy made the right decision he'd be attacked while if the woman made a decission that was actually wrong she would be admired.

3. Some of the characters in this overly long book should have been cut out. I honestly had no interest in most of them and found that it distracted me from characters that I really liked, Andry and Pol.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading the first 2 torturous books.......2002-12-31

I bought all three books together in this series without reading the Dragon-Prince series. I gave the first book a miserable rating because I was very confused. All the chars were alien to me. But becasue I had bought the books and i didn't want to waste my money, I forced myself to plow through to the end.

I must say it was worth my time and agony because the climax at the end of the book was incredible. It was so brilliant that I could almost feel the sunrunner web spinning around me as i read. It helped also that I got to like Andry in all my muddled reading and he was the only one who stuck in my mind. His death upsetted me but it's one of the things that glued me to the book.

The reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of all the trouble i took in reading the first two books. They are not bad but I made the mistake of not reading the Dragon Prince series. Or I could blame Rawn for not making it book 4,5,6 instead.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well, I am a fan of Weiss & Hickmann so..........2007-07-08

Great books. I have to admit that vol. 2 was a bit slow and dull at first but vol. 1 and 3 and most of vol. 2 made up for this. Didn't much care for the lovestory between Silvanoshei and the dark knight Mina so all this about Silanosheis love that wasn't returned is a bit dull for me (yes yes, I am a guy). But all in all I would rate this as a 5 star product. Another great story from Weiss & Hickmann.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Weis and Hickman's previous novels.......2007-06-05

First let me start off by saying that I did enjoy these books. But I enjoyed the previous books more. The Chronicles Trilogy was the first set in the Dragonlance world and I must say the best. It all sort of went downhill from there, albeit a long hill with a small angle but still downhill. I really thought that with The Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame that led up to The War of Souls Trilogy, that there would be a "rebirth" (if you will) of the Dragonlance Series. But sadly that wasn't to be. An IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: I have been led to believe that the writers, Weis and Hickman, actually have very little creative control over the Dragonlance Series. I believe that these books are meant to be companions to the world of D & D. I enjoy reading not throwing dice to see how much damage I do. As such, maybe they threw dice to see how the storyline would unfold. I don't know.

The Good:
The story is great. The action is great. Tas the loveable and unlikely hero is back. There is a lot of action and intrigue to keep you interested. The whole trilogy is one big twist after another.

The Bad:
I'm afraid there may be more bad than good...but only just. The number one problem, and it is SERIOUSLY BAD, is the typos. Did anyone actually proofread this book? I mean seriously it is bad. By the middle of Dragons of a Lost Star (second book in the trilogy), I was almost ready to call it quits just because it was so hard to make any sense of it. Misspelled words...bad punctuation...missing words...extra words. Just really, really, really bad. They need to fire whoever edited this book.

Now about the problems with the stories themselves. POTENTIAL SPOILER

My best advise to the readers about these books and this goes for pretty much ALL of the Dragonlance novels: Don't get attached to ANY character because they ALL die. The writers spend 3 books building a character and getting them developed then kill them. Why would you do that? Take a lesson from R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind and keep your main characters ALIVE. It's what keeps readers coming back for more. If Salvatore had killed Drizzt after his first trilogy, Salvatore's career as a writer would have been a lot less eventful. Same goes for Goodkind's Richard in the Sword of Truth books.
Let's see who has died along the way to The War of Souls. Keep in mind these are MAJOR CHARACTERS!
Sturm Brightblade, Tanis Half-Elven, Caramon Majere, Raistin Majere, Tika Majere, Alhana Starbreeze, Crysania, Goldmoon, Laurana, Palin Majere, Riverwind, Steel Brightblade, Tanin Majere, Kitiara Uth Matar (who needed more development), Berem the Everman (death was justified), Flint Fireforge, Tas Burfoot (dead but brought back) and I'm sure there were others but I think you get the picture. And again these were major characters. Why even bother developing them if they are so expendable? Heck, I wouldn't even bother being creative with the names. Maybe I can write a Dragonlance novel. "Here is Sam. Sam is an elf. Sam has to overcome insurmountable odds to save the world. Sam overcame the insurmountable odds and saved the world. Now Sam is dead." There, I just wrote a whole Dragonlance novel in five sentences.
What was the point of "The Second Generation" and "Dragons of Summer Flame"? They introduce new characters and then killed them all. Stupid.

Summary of my review:
These books have a great story, great plot, and great characters who will all die. Or if that sentence had as many typos as these books...Thes books have great story great plot and grate charactrse woh will all dye.

3 out of 5 stars Engrossing but ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-05-13

I have been a long-time fan of Weis and Hickman and their Dragonlance books. They have an uncanny ability to write engrossing stories full of conflict and angst and failure that somehow still come together at the end on a note of acceptance and hope. In general, the characters end the stories as better people than they started them as, and the price the characters pay is redeemed by what they gain by the end. I looked forward to this new series. The story is certainly engrossing -- I found it hard to put the books down, even during the darkest and bleakest points in the story. But unlike their earlier works, Weis and Hickman don't manage to wrap this one up well. Several story lines end abruptly, as if Weis and Hickman just ran out of steam on them and gave up. More important, almost none of the characters end the story having learned anything important. The sacrifices made by the characters remain unredeemed at the end. I was left disappointed and unsatisfied. Go ahead and read the story -- it is well written. Just be prepared to feel incomplete at the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Dragon Story and Much More.......2007-05-08

What makes this series so fascinating are the set of characters, especially the kender, who adds just the right amount of comic relief, and the freshness that comes from a vivid imagination on the part of the authors. You won't feel like you've read anything like this before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition.......2007-03-27

I've been working on the first book of the three and so far I'm enjoying it as much as all the other Dragonlance Novels I've read. If you love the Dragonlance novels, you won't be upset with this pick.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2007-06-21

I picked this book up due to the online line reviews and I was somewhat disappointed. The main characters were good but I think the action was very slow due to the fact that the author had some many volumes in mind for the series. Overall I didn't dislike the book but I would not really suggest it to a friend and it didn't interest me enough to buy any of the sequels.

5 out of 5 stars An Epic tale that will surely please.......2007-04-01

I haven't finished the series yet but so far I have loved all the books up to book four. That is where I left off and have just ordered the remainder of the seven book series. King's Dragon is a rich tale with great characters. I would recommend this series highly. I have read and reread the first four books and they never fail to please.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Series.......2007-02-19

Kate Elliott creates a complex world filled with strange creatures, forbidden love, politics, corruption, and everything needed to make a strong science fiction novel. The storyline is complex, and each book needs to be read right after the preceding one, but it is well worth all 7 books. By far one of the best series I have ever read in my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves tales with dragons and strange creatures. Bravo Kate, these books in the Crown of Stars are intelligent and amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Elliot is a mesmerizing writer.......2006-11-17

Even when I was gnashing my teeth in frustration at the slow development of the plot, I kept reading because the characters are so finely drawn that it was impossible not to keep reading. I was familiar with Elliott's writing from her previous series BOOKS OF THE JARAN, and knew that no matter if it seemed like a digression, there would be a reason for the sidebars. It is entirely possible that much of the plot will not come together until volume five of the saga. In the meantime, I was fascinated by Alain, Liath, & Sanglant(I think they are the major main protagonists, but there could be more); even the Eika and Sabella with her tame sorceress, Biscop Antonia were fascinating. (I'm sure Frater Hugh, now Abbot Hugh, will turn up again in the pantheon of villians).I have PRINCE OF DOGS (vol 2) and am ready to see what the next step will be.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to explain!.......2006-08-13

Where to start.....I have a hard time describing this book, It is so involved and I can't even say if I love it or hate it, but I couldn't put it down either! I think I kept reading it because I wanted so much for something good to happen to the main characters. I kept thinking "she has to get out of this situation!" Finally after three fourths of the book it does. Then I start waiting for her to get some courage and stop acting like a beat down puppy. But instead of getting frustrated with the book and giving up on it I keep reading! Why? Iam not sure! I must like something about it because I couldn't put it down I'm just not sure what that something is yet!

5 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner!!.......2007-03-10

I highly recommend Stronghold (Book 1 of the Dragon Star series,) and cannot say enough good things about it. Melanie Rawn has risen to new heights with this beginning of her second trilogy, set in the Dragon Prince world. I thought nothing could surpass that trilogy and the intricately woven characters and "tales" being told, but I was wrong. She has pulled in all the mystery, romance, magic, and spellbinding "facts" of the original trilogy, and added new twists, turns, and complications to this truly inspiring saga. This book is a WONDERFUL read!

3 out of 5 stars Too convoluted.......2006-08-22

This book returns to the World of sunrunners explored in the Rawn's "The Dragon Prince" trilogy. If you haven't read those first three books, this book will not make sense to you. It makes no effort at recapping previous events, and should be considered Book 4.

Rawn is a political fantasy author, and my opinion of this book was that she had so many subplots and hidden motivations going on between the different ruling characters, she lost track of them. Naming conventions for characters (similar sounding) can also confuse.

The complexity is richly epic if you care about the characters, but oddly, my favorite characters of Rohan and Sioned weren't given a big role. I hate the way Rawn draws Pol, their son, and the new characters didn't resonate with me.

I'd recommend buying the first book "Dragon Prince" if you are new to Rawn; that one was brilliant. If you love Rawn already, buy it -- you'll likely love this too.

Personally, I've read dozens of fantasy books I've thought were better (anything by Jim Butcher, Terry Brooks, or Terry Goodkind). However to be fair to Rawn, buy the "Dragon Prince" before you check out those gentlemen. It really was a good novel.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most highly recommended, "Must Get" books. Incredible!!!.......2005-09-01

There are hardly enough words to describe the talent of this woman. She ingeniously drew her characters along, new and old ones, to wrap both serious together in an incredible style. She leaves you bouncing and hopping from foot to foot while you wait to get to the next one, but unwilling to finish her last book as you wish for the story to never end.

That is, that's how it was for me. *Smiles*

Indeed, there are some characters that seem to have no impact on the storyline. But those who see those characters that way have no insight into the amazing storyline of this book. Each person, and each scene, no matter how inconsequential it may seem, lend to the book's overall lessons and the lives of the characters. Melanie Rawn, also, is an author that has no problem (seemingly) killing of her main character; in this way as well she is an incredible author, for doing such unexpected things, expecially after getting attatched to them, wrenches the reader's heart in sorrow.

And that is the whole point to reading a book--getting drawn in so strongly that you feel as if you are the character at the moment, and you feel as they do, and those feelings change as the book goes on.

Overall, her storyline, character growth, and the in depth information she creates for this knew world is amazing and one of the best. If you are in the mood for an emotionally wrenching storybook that lasts longer than most, or just in for a good read--I highly reccomend this book!

2 out of 5 stars conventional and unsurprising........2005-06-13

Why, oh why did she have to stretch out this series! I would have been happy with much less! (And all this Dragonlance and Dragon Prince stuff, what's up with that? I mean, was she purposely trying to confuse good people just reading her books? It COULD have been much simpler, but NO she had to make a big deal and split the whole thing up. What a stupid thing to do.)
I never got past the first chapter of Stronghold and you know what? I have no intention of going back to the library and trying to read it again. If it didn't catch my attention right from the start, there ain't much chance it ever will.
Her characters are overbearing and bossy (And the ones that aren't are usually spineless, A.K.A Meiglan, or whatever her name is.)
I read the first three books and they weren't bad (Maybe four stars.) but the rest just sucks. Melanie Rawn hasn't done anything adventurous with these books, so don't expect any ground breaking ideas or plots.
So, read it if you want to, but just get it from the library. It's free and you can't say later "Ugh, I paid money for THIS?"

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly stunning!!.......2005-05-16

Stronghold is the first novel in the Dragon Star series. Some say that it should have been the fourth book in the Dragon Prince series, but I beg to differ. The Dragon Prince series was about Rohan becoming first Prince of Stronghold and Shortly after High Prince also called "athrei" the old language for Dragon Prince. In this first epic novel in the Dragon Star series the reader is given Pol's point of view more often. Pol finds himself thinking about what he could do with the power of being High Prince. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS BOOK STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS.....In the end when Rohan is discovered dead only a few know. When Pol is told in the following novel, Dragon Token, He tries to find himself as who he is as a husband, father, and most important High Prince and protector of his people. So technically, Stronghold belongs in the Dragon Star series because Pol is still finding himself. Pol in the old language means star. When Riyan calls Pol athrei, Pol states that that is not him. Dragon Prince was about Rohan. Rohan is now gone, hence Dragon Star or the Dragon's star. Rohan's star or son. Pol.
This book is devastating but enthralling, and belongs in the Dragon Star series. Melanie Rawn is an artist that knows how to capture her readers imagination and keep them wanting more. Read both the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series.

1 out of 5 stars Totally ruined the series for me.......2006-08-22

There is a critical plot point in the book where an invading fleet is sailing up a river and the sunrunners attempt to set fire to their fire resistant sails and fail.

That was so bogus.

In the first Sunrunner novels, Rawn shows one of the early sunrunner rings deals with winds and has a gripping scene with a sunrunner creating a tornado. It was such a good scene, I never forgot it.

The sunrunners could have wrecked the fleet with tornados and winds, but if that happened, the entire story would end and all the politics would be for nothing. This plothole is so big it ruined the series for me, and I threw the book against the wall in disgust.

I recommend you give this book a pass.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic!!.......2005-05-16

This book continued the dragon star series with a strong flourish. These characters never stop amazing me. I don't care who you are but you will connect in one way or another with one of these characters.
If you have had the pleasure of reading any of the books by Martin, J.V. Jones, Douglas, and Tolkien you will find yourself at home reading this series.

5 out of 5 stars A great second book in the Dragon Star series.......2002-08-12

Rawn does it again with the second book in her Dragon Star series. The conflict between Pol and Aurdy is more drawn out. Pol is having to discover how he can run what is left of his army to final defeat over his enemy. A great book.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Favorite.......2001-08-06

I read this series over and over. The characters are so richly developed, it's like revisiting old friends. This was the first series I read as a young adult. I am ruined! I read every fantasy series I can find, and though many are good, I can't find one that is better.

5 out of 5 stars Children at war.......2000-01-12

A boy 7 years old left to rule a princedom. And the mother who mourns not only the death of a husband, a brother, and all her brothers family. Sits in a chair and weeps at the loss of childhood. At the end of this book so many children are fighting. from 7 - 11 years old. That I was left thinking to my self how odd. Then it occurred to me. Almost all the men are dead.

This is one of the most gripping novels I have ever read. Book 2 The Dragon Token, puts the reader right in the middle of the war with the Vellant'im and their High Warlord. And the Azhrei and the people of the Kingdoms.

War is hell as someone once said. And Melanie Rawn makes sure you understand exactly what that means. By allowing you to invest yourself into a character only to have that character die to the ravages of war.

This is unlike any book I have ever read. I found my self throwing the book across the room on more then one occasion. No book has ever griped me so tightly or effected me so deeply.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The nice prince in the previous book is now the boss type of princes himself, and is happily married to the witchy wife woman. They have a kid who is going to get the double whammy of rulership and witchiness when he grows up.

In the meantime they have to solve the problem of being nice to dragons and stopping evil sorcerer guys.

4 out of 5 stars A good novel.......2006-08-22

I wanted to give it three stars because for a couple hundred pages in the middle it is extremely slow. However I've read it more than once and my cover is bent. That means I genuinely liked the novel.

Rohan and Sioned have to deal with the challenges of ruling together, and the intrigue and drama grips you and won't let you go.

For me this was the Dragon Prince's 'happily ever after' explored as being the continuing challenges of life. Rawn weaves a rich world with great characterization and political intrigue. If you liked volume one of the Dragon Prince, buy volume two. You won't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful followup to Dragon Prince.......2005-10-20

High Prince Roelstra is dead, but Prince Rohan's world faces new threats from within and without as sorcerers, with powers identical and perhaps surpassing the Sunrunners, make their bid for power. A new generation rises to maturity as the children of Dragon Prince take their place in the world, and old characters meet their various fates.... A can't miss for fans of Dragon Prince and fantasy lovers.

5 out of 5 stars This is fantasy.......2004-11-24

This book is a very good read, full of adventure, romance, intrigue, magic, and suspense. While first book in this series was a bit slow, this book takes you back to what got you hooked on fantasy novels.
The characters are developed down to the smallest detail. They almost become personal friends. You feel all the excitement, fear, anger, and happiness that they feel.
The story is a typical adventure story, but Ms. Rawn has developed a way of throwing you of the predictable path with many different twists and curves to her plot. Some of which are so far off you want to start over to see if you missed something that could have predicted this event.
The only real issue with this book is that it takes time to develop. Some may think this book is to long, but a strong story with good character development takes many things and time is one of them.
Overall, this is an excellent book. I loved it and have read it many times.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book but too long.......2003-09-04

From what I have read of Melanie Rawn's books is that she is good at developing characters and provides good plots, but takes a little too much time describing how perfect and beautiful everyone is. Not everyone can be beautiful and perfect. The last 300 pages offer a really good story, but the first 400 is pretty annoying.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good........2004-12-14

This is a story that does quite a good job of including most of the elements that go into making Star Trek: The Next Generation interesting: good action, interesting ideas, excellent characterizations. It's not a particularly deep novel, even by the standard of Star Trek novels, but as a good, fast-paced story, it is excellent. It would have made a good episode.

4 out of 5 stars Light Entertainment.......2004-01-16

This book is written in a B-grade movie style. The characters are depicted in exaggerated fashion. The author never goes over the top in his depictions, but Worf comes rather close. The way it is done is still quite entertaining. The general writing is good. The descriptions are quite vivid and the combat scenes detailed and clear. The setting is epic: Enterprise goes inside of a stellar cloud, a feat made possible by Preserver technology. The action, in contrast, is swords and sorcery style. Riker and Troi investigate a medieval town and accompanying castle, while Picard and Data face off against a dragon. Then the Preserver element comes in for the sorcery section. It's definitely an unusual style of story, but interesting and fun reading.

5 out of 5 stars STNG #28 Here There Be Dragons - A superb novel!.......2003-10-10

Being as nearly as much a fan of fantasy fiction as I am of Star Trek fiction, I found the premise of this novel to be quite an interesting and appealing one. "Here There Be Dragons" is the first of only three Star Trek titles for author John Peel which is too bad in a way as I found all three of them to be quite well written stories. It would be nice to see this author make another visit to the genre.

This author has a great writing style that is very fluidic and the story is very fast paced, full of action, intrigue and adventure. This story also possesses something that many Star Trek novels either never attempt to do or attempt and fall flat on which is carrying more than a couple subplots into an extraordinary and surprising conclusion.

The cover art for this novel is a bit better than the standard fare; two of the main characters and a medieval castle with "dragons" flying over it.

The premise:

The Enterprise is investigating an interstellar cluster and suddenly receives news that a planet with a human colony on it is inside the cluster. Here is where the Preservers come into play considering at this point that humans hadn't made it "this" far into deep space and when these humans came to this planet they did not possess the technology to penetrate the tachyon field of the interstellar cluster.

What is more shocking than the human presence here on this extraordinary planet is that the humans are living is a world of knights and serfs lifted right out of medieval times, dragons included. Captain Picard and crew soon learn that interstellar trophy hunters have been raiding this planet as well. Soon after beaming down to the planet, Picard, Riker, Data and Ro become embroiled in a web of intrigue and murder and are taken prisoner. They must escape their captors and stop these interstellar hunters before they use their ancient weapon to destroy the Enterprise.

What follows from there is, as stated above, one of the best written and intriguing numbered Star Trek titles to date. I highly recommend this novel to any and all fans of the genre! {ssintrepid}

5 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Here There Be Dragons.......2003-06-22

Star Trek - The Next Generations: Here There Be Dragons written by John Peel is a well-written action-adventure novel written about a Preserver developing world that is hidden inside a tachyon cloud, where the only access is through a tunnel generated by Preserver technology, that is being exploited by a group of interplanetary trophy hunters. The events in this story take place before the sixth-season episode "Rascals."

This planet is right out of Earth's 13th-century Germany where they believe in the force of arms, ritual combat, honor, and glory. And because of the Prime Directive, now, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise have to set things right. This book takes you on an adventurous read where Captain Picard, Data, Ro and a member of a security detail beam to the surface of the planet and investigate. Of course things do NOT go as planned and this adds to the mystery and intrigue of the story. After a while, William Riker and Deanna Troi also beam down to the planet's surface where they follow-up leads as to the whereabouts of the smugglers.

The book goes back and forth between two main storylines with the addmixture of some minor storylines until you get all the main characters involved into the story proper. When reading this book you'll tend to think ahead of the story, but be careful the Enterprise and her crew experience some major roadblocks and impediments along the way making this story a complete adventure.

There is only one fight seen with the indiginous dragon species on the planet involving Captain Picard and it is well-written. These beasties are huge, eighteen feet tall and sixty feet long, with long talons equiped with claws that can cut prey in half with one pass and... if that isn't enough these dragon-lizards have armored hide with large sharp saw-edged teeth.

The story has an ending that has a few surprises and the reader will be engrosed in the story till the ending. All in all, the story is a solid 5 stars and this book is a keeper that you'll want to read again at a later time.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Trek.......2002-07-08

Here There Be Dragons is, like most good Trek novels, a quick and painless read with some memorable moments. The plot is in some ways reminiscent of A Call to Darkness, with Enterprise crewmembers enslaved in a medieval setting. There's simply not much more to say about the book than that . . . .

Book Description

In the bestselling tradition of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Margaret Weis, and Tracy Hickman, Alison Baird delivers the awe-inspiring conclusion to a fantasy trilogy for all ages. The events set in motion long ago by the Archons, an ancient race that founded the Empire, are now coming to a head. Though the world of Mera has been freed from the threat of King Khalazar, the Dragon Prince Mandrake has become the living embodiment of the cruel god Valdur, gifted with limitless power. To counter this threat, Ailia must fulfill the age-old prophecy and become the Tryna Lia, the champion of the Empire. As the time for the final battle draws ever nearer, the fate of not only Ailia, but of the entire Celestial Empire hangs in the balance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars terrific fantasy .......2005-08-24

Ailia Shipwright has been recognized as the human savior Princess of the Stars Tryna Lia, expected to defeat the malevolent God Valdur though her enemy contains similar power coupled with much more experience and no morals. Over the years Ailia has learned to use her vast deity-like abilities (see THE STONE OF THE STARS and THE EMPIRE OF THE STARS) and her allies have helped her prepare for the final confrontation coming very soon.

Meanwhile one of her deadliest foes the Avatar of Valdur Prince Morlan remains almost exclusively in his dragon body as Mandrake prepares himself to become the host of Valdur. While their respective allies war all over heaven, earth, hell and every other place in between, the final battle remains between Ailia and Mandrake fortified by Valdur on the evil God's home territory. The chances of the Princess triumphing seem remote at best.

This is a fabulous climax to a terrific fantasy trilogy as readers who have followed Ailia will appreciate the strong final confrontation with the Baird universe at stake. The story line is fast-paced and action-packed while loaded with all forms of mythological creatures especially shapeshifting dragons. Still the saga belongs to the heroine whose coming of age might mean her death and that of everyone she cares about. The pressure of being destiny's darling still remains from the previous novels, but the Princess steps to the plate to fight mano vs. woman with everything at stake. It is better to read the previous books first knowing that THE ARCHONS OF THE STARS is a five star triumph.
