ÝÝThese pages bring to life the people, events, and industries that helped to shape and transform the Filipino community of Chicago. With more than 200 vintage images, Filipinos in Chicago includes many photographs from personal albums of Filipino American families. This book depicts the many faces of the Filipino American in various facets of American life interwoven with Philippine traditions from the homeland.

4 out of 5 stars A Pictorial History of Filipinos in Chicago.......2007-10-07

I was somewhat disappointed in the fact that this was mainly a pictorial history with most of the text being a few paragraphs at the beginning of each chapter. This was a good buy though and this is a great step towards preserving the history of Filipinos in the Chicagoland area. Most of the families here have roots going back to the late 60's and early 70's when there was an influx of Filipino medical professionals coming over. It's important to know that there were Filipinos here before that and show their history as well.

4 out of 5 stars Explosion of Black Rage.......2007-07-24

Most people view race relations in the United States in the context of their own times. I would even be willing to bet that most non-black Americans know little about any civil rights issues that roiled the country in the days before they were born. Since I was coming of age in the late 1960s, many of my views on the subject had been shaped for better or worse by events that took place during that turbulent decade. But I always knew there had to be more to the story than the simplistic bad Southerner/good Northerner hogwash most of us were fed in school. Race Riot offers those of open minds an opportunity to learn that racism is a lot more complicated than a mere dislike of a group because of skin color.
My family is from Chicago and I got my copy of this book from my maternal grandfather who was interested in all things Chicago and who according to notes in the front of the book remembered exactly where he was when the troubles began. This made it doubly exciting for me to read. In Race Riot, author Tuttle starts by recounting the incident that ignited the racial tinderbox that Chicago had become in the years leading up to the riot's eruption. He covers in great detail the issues of overcrowding, the massive infux of rural Southern blacks and their subsequent ghettoization, inter-ethnic labor competition, the cynical policies of Chicago's city leaders, and any social and economic factors that led to polarization of feelings between the races. He writes of the New Negro, recently back from the war in Europe, who had heightened expectations of social and economic progress. And he writes of corrupt politicians, black and white, whose graft and conniving had helped turn black neighborhoods into crime-ridden cesspools of vice and degeneracy. Most importantly, Tuttle gives the reader a glimpse of the history of race-related riots in the US dating from the days before the Civil War on up through the ones in the early 20th century that did so much to fuel a sense of frustration among Chicago's black residents.
Race Riot is not a perfect book by any means and often is steeped in a pioneer style of mealy-mouthed political correctness, but it is still a valuable tool for students of the history of black-white relations in the United States. Tuttle doesn't bore the reader with irrelevant details but the book is heavily footnoted so those who want to learn more have a multitude of sources to which they can turn. If this is a subject that interests you, then you are sure to find this an absorbing read.

    3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2006-04-20

Overall this is a wonderful book. It is obviously this is a long term study done by William W. Tuttle, Jr. I found that his main goal in this book was to write an understandable book that documents the events that occured in Chicago in the year of 1919. In his book, it is apparent that he covered every aspect and perspective of the events that took place. This may be due to the fact that he not only focuses on the events that took place in chicago. but also on other similar events that took place around the nation. My only compliant might be that because of this the theme of the book at times seem recurrent and repeative. That aside, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in the history of Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Work, Highly Recommended.......2006-03-16

This book is an excellent account of the causes and aftermath of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. Tuttle manages to pull together an array of primary sources including newspaper articles, meeting minutes, and first-hand accounts, both written and oral, to tell the story of the Chicago Race Riot. His goal is to write history "from the bottom up", and in this, he is successful.

My only complaint is that by focusing heavily on individual accounts and exceptions to the norm, Tuttle misses out on some broader historical trends. However, since his stated goal is to write a study of "individuals as well as groups", this approach is understandable, and, in places, even desirible.

This is one of the only books on the subject of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, and, as such, it should be of interest to anyone studying the history of Chicago or the history of race relations in the United States.

4 out of 5 stars best (and only) book on the 1919 Chicago riots.......1999-09-05

As far as I know, this is the only book on the subject, which is an absolutely fascinating one for me. It is well written and very coherent, but unfortunately the author spends most of the book of the causes and results of the riots, not on the riot itself. Still, this is a wonderful book, essential for anybody interested in Chicago history.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, thoughtful inquiry--refreshing and bold.......1998-10-25

Not only does William M. Tuttle, Jr. show every virtue of a lover of history, but he does so with enough clear, crisp understanding that every point seems to sympathize with the mind of even an armchair historian of Black-American mores.

      Book Description

Light and darkness transform city buildings into surreal structures: an ordinary gray concrete building in plain daylight changes at night into a mysterious monolith or, under a blue-tinted lens, into an ethereal edifice. Swedish artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff harnessed these transformative powers of light to create a powerful spectacle that presents Chicago architecture from a wholly original perspective in this collection of striking photographs. Red Empty (Chicago 2003) is the latest in a series of urban-centered works spanning from Bangkok to Santa Fe in which von Hausswolff set 1000-watt red spotlights against the architecture of run-down, abandoned buildings to generate spectral real-world monochromes. His images explore intermediate realms through these otherworldly images—worlds traced by psychic residue that rewrite the history of particular sites. Red Empty is a compelling visual work that transforms Chicago architecture into sculptures of light, shadow, and stone.

      5 out of 5 stars Not-so good vs Not-so evil.......2003-03-11

In the Kingdom of America, Edward III is charged with maintaining order in this socio-economically unbalanced time. Endowed with power and wealth, he's loathed to relinquish them, but genuinely cares for his subjects, and loves his family and friends. His arch-rival, Chicago Red, is a true rebel for the people's liberation, yet arguably insane (he's not even sure what his real name is). Add one Robinhood-like character who's really the Archbishop; the King's ruthless, extremely sexy assasin with only one weakness (his feelings for Chicago Red's little brother); a maiden who knows how NOT to be too much of a lady; and an assorted mix of colorful characters, and you've got yourself one great book! Given the recent developments around the world today and its subsequent climate, this may be a prophetic description of what could happen when all the dust has settled after a war and there is truly only one super-power.

      3 out of 5 stars Adequate Post-Apocalyptic Thriller.......2000-07-18

This is another in a long series of Post-Apocalyptic novels that I have read over the past several years. This is not among the best of this genre but it is definitely not among the worst either.

First published in 1990 by ROC the story is told in the not so distant future. A king rules what is left of America. Edward III is the pompous sack of compost that rules what is left of North America. The disaster of our times has left much the land flooded and the landscape greatly changed.

As is true in many of these books the Post-Apocalyptic society is riddled with pseudo-religious organizations. In most ways this is a standard adventure novel in the vein of "A Canticle for Leibowitz", although not as well executed.

Rebecca Meluch has done an admirable job with this book and hopefully she will continue to improve. She has written at least two other novels as of this date, Sovereign and Jerusalem Fire, which I have not read.

      Book Description

You might think that an autobiography by the senior chairman of McDonald’s in Canada and Russia would be a modestly boastful, ho-hum business story of expansion and board-room debates, wrapped in some nice reminiscences about his family. You would be very wrong. Because this is George Cohon’s autobiography, and George Cohon (“Call me George, please!”) is not an ordinary man…not in his approach to business and not in his approach to telling his life story.

It’s true that George Cohon is one of the most successful businessmen of his generation and that he’s also one of the most colourful. But the man you’ll meet in the pages of To Russia With Fries is considerably more complex than that description suggests. Here, you’ll encounter a man who not only dreamed the impossible dream of opening a McDonald’s restaurant in the heart of the Soviet Union (of all places), but had the patience, the persistence, and above all the good humour to navigate the maze of obstacles set in his course by a scornful communist bureaucracy. You’ll meet a man whose heart is bigger than his assets (he’s donating all the royalties from this book to charity); a man with a serious sense of fun, who loves (and is frequently on the receiving end of) practical jokes; a man whose life so far has been extraordinary by any standard. You’ll discover a man who is a natural and creative entrepreneur and an acknowledged expert on starting a business in Russia. He’s been there and done that – long before the crash of the Iron Curtain.

From a man who can think and do six things at once (he’s been told he has a mind like a butterfly), comes a very lively and hugely entertaining story that has universal appeal.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Selling Russians McBelieve.......2005-10-28

A fascinating story of the authors life, concentrating on his efforts trying to sell the concept of fast food to party apparachiks who had almost little idea what a hamburger was and acted as if they cared less. The book is full of the many humerous and incongruous situations that confronted the western businessman in both Soviet and post Soviet Russia, for that reason alone I would recommend the book.

Having said this I found many irritations too in the sections of the book dealing with activities outside Russia. There are a number of self congratulatory stories, where uninformed critics of multinational fast food are roundly dispatched. Meanwhile meaningful discussion of ironies such as corporate fast food super sizing kids and then building them Hospitals is conspicuous by its absence. Whether in this instance, blocking investment that helped black South Africans or raising money for Israel the book at times seems to be all about self righteous application of economic power. The author trained as a lawyer and naturally argues a good defence, but in criticism I found some of this irkesome.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining memoir .......2005-07-22

George Cohon describes how he turned McDonald's into a Russian institution by marketing meat, bread, potatoes and milk in a culture where such fare had long constituted the traditional diet. The lesson here is that when global companies market products that local consumers can readily identify with, the companies are perceived to be of local origin.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Entertaining.......2000-05-03

Although there is a bit of name dropping and a few self congratulatory stories, overall this book is entertaining and worth reading. Mr. Cohon, while summarizing business dealings which define perseverance, provides interesting perspectives on business management, networking and family values. He also provides a lot of information about the inner political workings of the former Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars it is an inspiring book. great determination.......1998-10-03

5 out of 5 stars Press On---Cohon brings McDonalds to Russia.......1998-06-16

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Supplement.......2000-07-19

The Chicago Chronicles, a story supplement for Vampire the Masquerade, consists of three volumes. There are many game sessions worth playing in the three volumes and spectacular city guides to Chicago and Milwakee.

The second volume provides an updated city guide of chicago which details all of the major players left in the city after the adventure "Under a Blood Red Moon"--which is also included in this volume.

The adventure is quite stimulating, featuring an all out war between Lupines and Vampires in Chicago. Whereas the city guide provides all one needs to know to role play a campaign in Campaign.

While this volume can probably stand on its own, it is very helpful to have the first volume as well. The first volume helps to acclimate the players to Chicago prior to having to engage in a challenging all out war in the city.

The odd thing about the three volume set is that the adventures detailed in the third volume seem to chronologically come before the events set in the second volume.

Again, these are wonderful supplements that are great to revolve a role playing campaign around. But, if nothing else, they are also fun reading that can inspire any other campaign.

This is the first full biography of Hall of Famer Urban "Red" Faber, who won a record three World Series games in 1917--until 2005, the last time the Chicago White Sox won it all. The winningest spitball pitcher in the American League and one of the oldest players ever to wear a major league uniform, Faber regularly challenged the game’s top hitters. He experienced the heights of championship baseball until the Black Sox scandal decimated Charles Comiskey’s team and relegated Faber to stardom on second-division White Sox clubs.

5 out of 5 stars Great glimpse of a ballplayer and his times.......2007-02-25

Brian Cooper's book, Red Faber, is more than just a biography of a great baseball pitcher. It is filled with insights into the baseball world of Faber's era -- the era of the spitball, Babe Ruth and the infamous "Black Sox" scandal of 1919, among other things. Cooper tells a story that begins in the little town of Cascade, Iowa, weaves its way through a baseball career that saw Faber win 254 games, and peaks when Faber was elected to the Hall of Fame. It is a thoroughly enjoyable book that makes the reader realize that Red Faber was one of those "what if" ballplayers. What if he had not been sidelined for the 1919 World Series? Would the White Sox have won, despite the fix? What if he had not played for such bad ballclubs in the 1920s -- would he have won 300 games? One thing is for certain. This book belongs on every baseball history buff's bookshelf.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-02-12

This is an excellent book if a person is interested in baseball and how the game was played years ago. The author did a fantastic job of describing a real baseball talent, Red Faber and his life story.
It was a walk down memory lane for me as I grew up in the same neighborhood as his family on the Southwest side of Chicago. I loved going over to his house and seeing the signed baseballs, the trophies and the numerous signed letters he received over the years.
This is a fun read and the book contains some great snapshots!

        5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-02-07

I was born in Dubuue where my father was a sports reporter for the Times Journal. In later years he would relate stories, some of which are brought to life again by this story about RED. I also was in Chi town in August 1933 when the Sox and Yankes went 18. I sat through all 18 and often have wished that I could rememder more. I thought it was still light enough for more, but it was called anyway. I am sure that it was a get away day for the yankees and they had to rush to make the train. I also was a batboy for the Guttenberg Gaints in the late 30'3 when they played in Cascade. What great memories from this great story
