Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years.
O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. This beautiful edition of Island of the Blue Dolphins is enriched with 12 full-page watercolor paintings by Ted Lewin, illustrator of more than 100 children's books, including Ali, Child of the Desert. A gripping story of battling wild dogs and sea elephants, this simply told, suspenseful tale of survival is also an uplifting adventure of the spirit. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description

Karana is the Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Hers is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.

Enchanting and riveting, this story will stay with you.......2007-08-27
I have to smile when reading these other reviews that say this book was one of their favorites as a child. It also was mine. I've read so many books, that most times the memory of the details within them grow dim, but not with "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I can still picture the breathtaking beauty of the island where Karana spent her growing years. I still remember her joys and trials of living alone for so long, after everyone had left. Her ingenuity and strength still amazes me. I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can enjoy this Newberry book with them. It's definitely one in a million.
Island Of The Blue Dolphins!.......2007-08-19
When I was on vacation at Martha's Vinyard I went to the book store and bought Island Of The Blue Dolphins for myself and I loved it!! I love it so much because of it's beautiful discriptions and details that I can picture in my mind. This book is beautifully written and has wonderful detail of natural survival of hunting, and making friends (Rontu and Rontu-Aru and the English girl Tutok, the fox and Won-a-nee the otter). How many wonderful and beautiful adventures of exciting survival can one indian girl have? I am 10 years old and recommend this book to whoever loves reading and is a fan of detail and beauty!!!!!!!!
May be too adult for 10 or 11 yr olds.......2007-08-15

Book Description
In the Pacific there is an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself in the sea. Around it, blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea elephants and sea birds abound. Once, Indians also lived on the island. And when they left and sailed to the east, one young girl was left behind.
This is the story of Karana, the Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Year after year, she watched one season pass into another and waited for a ship to take her away. But while she waited, she kept herself alive by building a shelter, making weapons, finding food, and fighting her enemies, the wild dogs. It is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.

The book was well read on this CD. The sound effects were good. It made the story come alive as we listened. I would recommed this CD especially for children needing to read this story for school.

Review of a Great Book........2006-12-02
On an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself on the sea, there were indaians living on that island many years ago. The villagers are taken by a ship to the east, but a girl was left behind. Her name is Karana and she waits for the ship to come back to her to take her. While waiting, she battles the nature that is on the island. It is not just a book of survival, it is also a book of beauty and battling lonelyness on the island.

Island Blitz.......2003-02-14
In this action-packed, blitz-a-rama, book taken place on Crab Island, of the Caribbean, you'll feel as if you're actually on the Caribbean, watching every little bit of this happen! It's so exotic that it moves you!
While Sally, Peter, and Andy Grant stay on Crab Island alone, due to their father going off to a medical conference, many mysterious, emotional, and stressful things occur while their father is away.
This includes caring for a dolphin that has deep gashes due to a motorboat, Jan and Jon arguing with the Grants about the fact that they got there first, and finally, they witness a jaw-dropping boat tragedy, due to inexperienced sailing. What they eventually uncover about Gloria and Benito, who had the boat crash, becomes a horrific nightmare, no one ever wishes to live, [most wouldn't have lived through]!
I loved this book! I enjoyed it for many reasons. Dolphins are absolutely my favorite animal. I also liked the fact that it was on the Caribbean, so it made me imagine that I was actually there. Also every chapter ended with a problem, which really allured me to read on furthermore!
Edge of your seat book........1999-06-04
I liked this book because I like suspence and action. And it's a very good mystery. But it's kind of fake though. Sally, Andy, and Peter are left on the beach while their dad went on a business trip. But he told a hotel manager to keep an eye on them. When they were adjusting to the campsite, a boat runs over a dolphin and that dolphin has a baby. But the mom swims away. So they feed it bottles of ginger beer. Then two people that had a crash on the beach lost a missing fender. The kids say they know nothing, but they have the missing fender. Then the two people come on the beach with a gun and take Andy and Peter. Sally has to get them back. I'm not going to tell you anymore unless you read the book yourself.

Island of the Blue Dolphins teaching guide.......2005-04-28
Each chapter is summarized and the activities that are provided saved me a lot of time. However, an inaccuracy occurred in this guide. The author of the guide drew the wrong conclusion as to where Karana built her house. One would think that someone would proofread or double check their facts before publishing a guide. That said, except for the inaccuracy, the guide was very useful. If, like most teachers, you are too busy to create a guide for every novel you teach, buy this book. Just remember, Karana built her house on the headland, not near the wild dogs' cave!

A marine biologist and his children loved Adventure on Dolphin Island.......2006-03-14
As a marine biologist, boater, and father of two daughters (ages 3 & 4), I truly enjoyed reading Adventure on Dolphin Island. We read every night, and I think I looked forward to each new chapter as much as my girls did.
The first couple of chapters were so exciting, that we were hoked by page 7. I used so many events in the book to weave into broader lessons to teach my girls about boating safety (especially about wearing a life jacket!), making friends, bravery, and marine animals & plants.
There was plenty of factual information, yet enough fictional frosting to spark the imagination. This is the first Prager book we have read, but I am already looking for our next selection.
Fun to read.......2005-09-26
Lots of good information for the pre-teen reader about tropical marine life interwoven with the adventures of the main characters.

Customer Reviews:
Good Story, Unlikable Main Character.......2005-03-18
"Dolphin Diaries" mixes a typical teen adventure story with a unique and educational story about a girl who loves dolphins. But that's just the problem! Jody is so obsessed, that I find myself gravitating more toward Brittany, who is supposed to be the snobby girl. It's just so sickening how Jody can't have any fun without it involving dolphins! I actually find myself mentally cheering for Brittany when she makes a remark such as "Is dolphins the ONLY thing you can think about?".
Like I said, interesting story. Even though it is often predictable, I still enjoy this series, and love hearing about the adventures the characters have on "Dolphin Dreamer". I also learn a lot! In this book, I learned that pilot whales are actually dolphins. This story will keep you entertained, and most readers will be excited to hear that Lauren is back! But don't feel like you're the odd-one-out if you start disliking Jody and her over-emotional, sickening-and-eye-rolling obsession with dolphins. I understand her liking for dolphins, they're cool! But sometimes, she just needs to calm down!
Following the Rainbow.......2003-12-07
The book is about a girl named Jody, she loves whales and dolphins. When Jody is with her friends, Lauren and Brittany on a trip they find out that whales are being hurt by speeding ferries.
One of the worst part is that the girls meet a boy named Mario, and he piolts the fastest ferry! Jody doesn't want to put Mario out of business, but Jody wants to save the whales. When Jody is on a cruise she saw a whale that had been hurt be a speeding ferry. Then far in the distance Jody saw the aunt of the hurt whale. Brittany, Lauren, and Jody named the aunt of the hurt whale Tia because Tia means "aunt" in Spanish. They named the hurt whale Seb (short for Sebastian) because they were near San Sebastian. After Seb is hurt Jody starts to ask people if they rather save the whales and enjoy or go fast and hurt most of the whales. Most people said they want to save the whales. After that the ferries slowed down. Seb was okay so he and Tia started to swim towards the rainbow.
I loved the book because I like dolphins and whales just as much as Jody. The book really shows how special whales are to people, and how much people would care for them if they were hurt. The book shows to people that whales and dolphins aren't bad animals there just different than most sea animals. Whales and dolphins are almost like humans.

island of the blue dolphin.......2006-08-13
the island of the blue dolphin written by scott o'dell.this book is about tryin' and finding out the easy route to survive all alone in an island of the blue dolphin and finding out that the easy route is the hardest route. the characters in tihis book are karana, the main character with her adventures, ramo, karana's brother, chief chowig, the chief and karana's father and other characters at the begining of the story. as an indian girl her role of an indian is doing a women's job. her tribe name is won-a-pa-lei, karana is her secret name.shh.....
this book influence my life because it taught to never give up on what you hope and being aware on what is happening in your life. this book shows intellectual perseverance and intellectual curiosty. karana, a indian girl, trys and never gives up to keep up her hopes for someone to rescue her on the island. she is curious and aware what is happening on the island such as figthing with her enemies, the wild dogs. the island where the indians of karana father, who is the cheif/leader named chief chowig, lives on a villege called ghalas-at an island that is shape like a dolphin and is surround by where the blue dolphins swim, where the otters play and where the sea elephant and sea birds abound.
first explorers come and invade and try to make friends with the indians. instead when the men of the indians including the indian tribe leader comes to see and help their needs.the explorer fight for the otters and clams. suddenly a war starts with a gun and a spear, killing the cheif or leader of the indian tribe and the men.
i like this book because it has between the lines on what is going on and sertain details that grab you toward the book.i think people should read this book so they would picture on what the book is telling you. the moral in this book is try and try but never give up.if you want to read this book there are lots of emotional thing that are happening in karana's life.
