    Book Description

In ancient times, Pompeii was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire. Its 20,000 inhabitants lived in the shadow of Vesuvius, which they believed was nothing more than a mountain. But Vesuvius was a volcano. And on the morning of August 24, A.D. 79, Vesuvius began to erupt. Within twenty-four hours, the entire city of Pompeii and many of its citizenshad been utterly annihilated. It was not until hundreds of years later that Pompeii saw daylight again, as archaeological excavations began to unearth what had been buried under layers of volcanic rubble. Digging crews expected to find buildings and jewelry and other treasures, but they found something unexpected, too: the imprints of lost Pompeiians, their deaths captured as if by photographic images in volcanic ash.

5 out of 5 stars Pompeii and circumstance.......2006-03-08

Having only just begun his examination of the ancient dead with, "Bodies From the Bog" (a title that bears more than a passing resemblance to a kitchy 1950s horror flick), Mr. James M. Deem returns to look at the ancient dead of an entirely new region. As a child I was fascinated by mummies and the bodies of human beings from so very long ago. History was never my favorite subject and often I found that unless I could see a person in the flesh (rotting, decomposing, flaking flesh though it might be) I was unable to understand how similar to us the people of the past were. Pompeii, naturally, is a fascinating subject in and of itself. How could it not be? You've three-dimensional images of people in the last throes of death. I challenge anyone to come up with anything half as gripping (i.e. feeding on our more macabre instincts) when talking about any other ancient civilization. With plenty of amazing photographs, clear concise writing, and a plot that will keep many a kid spellbound, this is probably one of the finest non-fiction titles to grace library bookshelves in years.

"On August 24, the last Tuesday that they would live in their town, the people of ancient Pompeii awoke to a typical hot summer's morning". And we're off! No long drawn out Preface on why Deem wrote this book or dull page long sermon on the history of archeology itself. Nope. Instead we are treated to a highly accurate encapsulation of the events that lead up to Mount Vesuvius erupting and the good people of Pompeii perishing. With some reliance on the accounts of Pliny Jr., Deem tells us what happened on August 24 and 25, A.D. 79. There's even a timetable of events marking the different stages in the eruption. With everyone dead and buried beneath different amounts of ash, Deem then looks at the consequential rediscovery of this once bustling town. We learn how in 1709 a group of diggers found the nearby town of Herculaneum and plundered it of its riches. Pompeii wasn't found until 1748 when discovering the city was something akin to a treasure hunt. For the tourists, skeletons found were set up in dramatic tableaux. Then, around 1860, our hero Guiseppe Fiorelli had the previously inconceivable notion that maybe someone should try preserving Pompeii and its bodies. When people came across hollow areas in the ash, it was Fiorelli who had the brilliant idea to pour plaster into the holes and create life sized statues of what the people in their last moments looked like. The rest of the book discusses the fate of the plaster casts, what we've learned about the residents of Pompeii, and the interesting stories found in the nearby town of Herculaneum. The book ends with the sorry state of current Pompeii excavation and a call for people to make note of the swift decomposition of what we've already found.

Knowing perfectly well that Pompeii alone does not a children's non-fiction text make, Deem's decision to talk about Herculaneum as well was an intelligent choice. Admittedly the book isn't subtitled, "Life and Death Around Mt. Vesuvius", but who cares? Herculaneum offers just as much useful information and rather exciting drama (provided, of course, by the skeletons) as the titular city itself. Most impressive though is Deem's writing. He never talks down to his audience, but at the same time he has an acute ear for timing. Some non-fiction books for kids are great but just go on and on and on. I loved "The Tarantula Scientist" by Sy Montgomery but it definitely could've stood "Body From the Ash"'s editor. No chapter in this book seems out of place or awry. It's a well-honed little series of images and words that will grip many an unsuspecting reader.

It seems to me that Deem must have carefully weighed just how grisly to get. For example, at one point we see a cast of a teenage girl taken from Oplontis, an area outside of Pompeii. The girl was made by pouring wax rather than plaster into the cavity. From that they made a mold and a final plaster casting. On the plus side, the technique is the most lifelike view of a victim of Vesuvius yet. On the down side, it's incredibly disturbing. According the photo credits hidden on the publication page, Deem took this picture himself as authorized by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Environment. He must have taken very great care to give viewers a clear enough look of the body to let them know how gruesome and realistic it was. At the same time, he's far enough away and at an awkward enough an angle that child readers, for all they want to be, won't be too grossed out. By and large, the book is all about dying people, so there's not a whole heckuva lot you can do about that. Fortunately, each shot is tastefully presented while remaining exploitative enough for youthful palates.

And talk about stunning images. Some non-fiction texts skimp on the images. Deem went so far as to personally visit Pompeii himself and get permission to photograph buildings closed to the general public. He even got his hands on the Pompeii photography archive, thereby getting some pretty keen shots of early archaeological excavations and artifacts. Some are in color (as with the incredibly impressive image of the Herculaneum Ring Lady) and some in black and white but every single one is gripping. If you didn't want to go to Pompeii before reading this book, you may now simply from looking at the images.

But don't ask me. Hand this book to a kid assigned a non-fiction book for a school book report. Slyly slip it to the child looking for mummy books and who hasn't had their fill. Pompeii has many charms, but its greatest may be how kid friendly it is. Some parents may shy away from having their children deal with a subject so gruesome, but for all those budding forensic scientists out there, few books will satiate them quite as well as "Bodies From the Ash". Lively lovely work.

      Book Description

Ten-year-old Christina Rose is convinced she has "Ghost Radar," meaning she can sense when ghosts are nearby. Not fake, creepy movie ghosts, but REAL ghosts. Like the ghost of her mother, who died in a plane crash when Christina was only 3. Christina knows her mother's spirit came to visit her the night of the accident, but nobody believes her.

Now Christina and her family have moved from New York to North Klondike, California, and more strange things are happening. Christina's next-door neighbor and new best friend Roberto Wing is convinced the Roses' house is haunted by not one but two very scary ghosts. So Christina, her twin brother Danny, and Roberto form a ghost-hunters' club, determined to uncover the truth behind the bizarre happenings. As they investigate, they realize that everyone has a real ghost story to share--some funny, some foolish, and some quite frightening.

5 out of 5 stars From the Not-So-Private Files of Ghost Hunters I.N.K........2003-01-03

When 10-year-old Christina Rose and her family (her father and twin brother, Danny) move to North Klondike, California, from New York, she wasn't expecting to move into a haunted house--or have her mother's ghost follow them. So, being a somewhat eccentric child (she claims to have Ghost Radar), Christina starts a ghost club called Ghost Hunters I.N.K. (In North Klondike) and sets out to uncover the truth about the unexplained events in her new house, with the help of her neighbors: Roberto Wing, his psychic mother, and Professor Imogen Barrymore, a parapsychologist.

"The Very Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose" is a great book for preteens who are into the paranormal. It doesn't rely heavily on overused ideas about ghosts, such as white sheets, moaning noises, or murderous spirits. Instead, Christina documents "real" ghost stories, as told from her friends and family--with black and white illustrations--to make the book seem more believable.

4 out of 5 stars The Very Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose.......2002-04-11

The Very Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose is about a girl named Christina and her twin brother Danny. Christina and Danny's mom died in a plane crash when they were only three years old. Christina, Danny, and their dad move from their old home in New York to a pink house in California. Christina thinks about ghosts a lot. Many strange things happen and Christina thinks they are being caused by ghosts.
I liked this book because it involves ghosts. I also like this book because I like the characters' personalities.
The message the author is trying to share is that when you have troubles, you can get over them. I think this because Christina has lots of troubles but she gives them time and she talks them out with friends and family so she can get over them.

      4 out of 5 stars excellent.......1999-08-09

This was such a good book, that I couldn't put it down. It was very well written, except for the very end. It stopped such abruptly that I wondered if there was another part to the story. Still, I recommend this book, and I do think that there should be a second "Very Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose".

4 out of 5 stars it was smart and well written.......1999-04-18

great book! the author used many great tricks and it was entertaining. I couldn't put it down! it was funny and made me believe in ghosts

4 out of 5 stars Good, but the Bradley book upstages it........2000-07-22

When I compare this edition of the libretto to the Ian Bradley edition of the collected librettos (Oxford), I find that this has more weak points compared to the Bradley book. Of course, both books suffer from inaccuracies in the libretto, but here is a more serious case. Also, the print of the book is a little bit hard to read, because of its age from many years ago. The Bradley book seems to be easier. Yet even despite these shortcomings I am happy to know that you can still sing along to ANY G&S song in here, or find your favourite passage, be it from MIKADO, PIRATES or PINAFORE, or any other opera. But this book still has two advantages to it - containg the librettist's drawings, and its cheaper price compared to the Bradley book. As well as the libretto for the never-before-heard THESPIS opera. Overall, while I am prepared to recommend this to the true Savoyard, I am not really prepared to recommend this to a beginner, except those who cannot afford to spend more money on the Bradley book. Still, this edition is an easy one with which you can live.

5 out of 5 stars The most witty and civilized entertainment ever devised........1998-10-09

If you are a Savoyard, or even if you know what that means, this jumbo collection is one you will treasure. With a preface by esteemed music critic, Deems Taylor, and illustrations by W. S. Gilbert himself, the complete librettos from all fourteen Gilbert & Sullivan operettas is the perfect companion at a great low price. You'll find yourself humming the Arthur Sullivan melodies as you read "I polished up the handles so carefully," "Let the punishment fit the crime," and "I'm called little Buttercup, Sweet little Buttercup." In one attractive volume are the complete and unabridged texts of "The Mikado," "The Pirates of Penzance, "H.M.S Pinafore," and the eleven other operettas that set a world standard for intelligent musical theatre.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars A Great Operating Manual.......2003-03-18

The power of Leading in Tough Times comes from using it as an operating manual for business leaders going through restructurings, transitions, downsizings, organizational changes (and which ones aren't). It's a robust compilation of best thinking on how to keep employees engaged while going through the turmoil of change. The beauty of it is that it isn't about using gimmicks, gadgets, or smoke and mirrors; it's all about challenging leaders to apply authentic, principled, high-value, practical approaches.

The authors (father and daughter) pitch some compelling hardballs to consider early on, "Suppose it's not your job to motivate - that you'll cease using your approval and possibility of advancement as a carrot for certain performance. All carrots will be banned, in fact. Suppose that people are naturally motivated to work toward a meaningful, common vision. When we fail to see motivated people, our questions would have to change from 'How do I motivate them?' to 'What is getting in the way of their motivation?' This changes the conversation considerably."

And that empowerment thing: "There is a lot of talk in organizations about empowerment. But that's mostly all we get - the talk. More times than not, empowerment is just another buzzword and has little to do with fundamental change in the division of power, profits, and authority. And yet, we know that if our organizations are to truly thrive during tough times, we absolutely must help people to feel powerful in a real way. Give people the control and influence necessary to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Increase their power by helping them build their skills and knowledge, and by making sure they have the resources they need to be successful. Make them creators of their own destiny."

        I like those ideas.

Actually, every idea the authors offer makes sense, great sense, great common sense. In fact, that's why I rated it only a four instead of a five. It was so pragmatic I didn't discover any profound new insights that would pull the trigger on that five for me. But, I shouldn't expect that from a book written in a manual-mold. (Maybe the authors and publisher will get more delight knowing I bought a copy of the book for each one of my managers, my boss, and my boss' boss.)

This is a book that needs to be imbedded into the Philosophies, Strategies, and Ethics for Leaders section in every Company Operating Manual. It provides substantial coaching on how to energize and engage the workforce. And it guides leaders on ethics, vision, mindfulness, and effective communication. All advice intended for managing during change and tough times. In reality, it's great advice for always.

            Book Description

From a 5,000-year-old "Iceman" discovered in Europe to a tongue-tied Egyptian mummy named Natsef-Amun, mummies have a special way of "talking" to scientists--providing important clues about ancient civilizations. In this funny, fact-filled book, author James M. Deem takes readers on a mummy-discovery tour that spans centuries and continents. He explains exactly what mummies are, how they are created, where they have been found, how scientists investigate them, and what they tell us about the people who lived long ago.

4 out of 5 stars MUMMIES REVEALED! (through Forensics).......2005-05-07

A decently written book, on a simplified plane, that explains basic concepts of archaeology to a middle school student, and older. An interesting synopsis of various facets of investigation, history, frauds and cons, transport, science investigations, and anecdotal recitals of interest.
I LIKE THIS BOOK BECAUSE it not only talks of mummies but of the process of mummification of various things, give experiments, and opens up insight into archaeological methods and goals. written for the younger crowd, the older crowd can learn a few things. The author has put a lot of information into the book, on a level that all can comprehend and appreciate.
I once thought that Mummies were few and far between, but read later that there were so many mummies found in/on the Nile Plain, that those that weren't in Museums, were ground up into a medical powder that people swallowed (mostly Brits and French (probably the reason they are now so into Scotch and Cognac)) that made people far sicker than they were before the `cure'; and a goodly amount, say 30,000, were used to fire the boilers of the Egyptian Railroad (the mummy embalming and subsequent body dehydration rendered a fuel that had a high Btu coefficient).
Topics include The Mummy Mythology Test; Where Mummies have Been Found; The Iceman; Flexed Mummies; Extended Mummies; Pet Mummies; Animal unfinished meals; Curses; The art of Artificial Mummy Making; Sand Mummy; Molded Mummies; Burial Tombs; Andean Finds; Scythian (Russian) Mummies; Mummies by Accident (or rather, "Be careful when walking through a Peat Bog); Frozen types; Tattooing; Tollund man; Forensic Examinations; Lindow Man; Mummies who get around; Mummy Dummies; Graverobbers; Doctors and their `cures'; Treasure Hunters and Antique Collectors; Mummy Magicians; Carnys and Sideshow Operators; Where to go to see a mummy.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be a Mummy Dummy!! Read this book!!.......2000-11-10

To the western mind, mummies have always conjured up mental scenes of dusty, Egyptian tombs where a white-haired archeologist is suddenly set upon by a bandage-wrapped figure that unexpectedly throttles him to death. We'll see young children who have very patiently bound themselves up with layers of toilet paper lumber down the street at Halloween groaning out tricks or treats. The few of us who have actually SEEN a real mummy often find them rather disturbing looking or, in the words of one of my students, "eeeewwwww!!!"

Here to lay many of those untrue myths to their final rest (pun intended) are James M. Deem and True Kelley with their book, "How to Make a Mummy Talk." The book takes some of the most popular myths and untruths of mummies (mummies are all from Egypt, mummies are all found in tombs, etc) and sets the record straight.

While the intentional preservation of deceased humans by mummification is thousands of years old, as in the case of Egyptian Pharos, this is certainly not the only place, time or way that mummies have been made. In fact, the oldest mummies don't even come from Egypt: they hail from South America. Mummies have been found in sand and ice as well.

Deem and Kelly do a fine job of explaining why there are so many myths about mummies and do an excellent job of explaining how mummies GOT that way in the first place. The long and complicated process of Egyptian mummification (which often took 70 days or longer) is well explained here, as are the natural processes at work for what might be called "accidental" mummies: people like the Iceman who froze to death but were preserved by natural forces.

Mummies have been misunderstood throughout history, and often denied the respect they deserve--during the 1800's mummies were bought and ground up as medicine! It's high time that this change. A good way to instigate some of this change is to get this book and read it! Practically every student is at least passingly interested in mummies. Take advantage of this interest, and provide them with the useful, CORRECT information in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read and filled with facts.......1997-10-20

This is a very good book. I like the drawings but, there should be more of them. I know a lot about mummies, but I didn't know the majority of the things that are there. I think everyone should read it.
