5 out of 5 stars Well-written, easy to read and informative !.......2006-10-16

This is a great book for an introduction to nanotech companies and overall investing in small companies. It's very easy to read, not like a text book that you often find with technical books. Does not go into the details of the technology of nano but provides enough for you to get a surface level understanding to carry a sensible conversation about the subject.
I will highly recommend this book. It also has a nice touch by adding numerous contacts and websites in the appendix if you 'll want learn more about nanotech.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in nanotechnology.......2006-08-02

Darrell Brookstein's "Nanotech Fortunes" should be considered a "must read" for anyone interested in nanotechnology. General readers seeking to ascertain the staggering potential of nanotechnology will find this work useful, as will those who want to know how, when, and in what ways nanotechnology will affect large and small businesses. For those considering investing in nanotechnology, now or in the future, "Nanotechnology Fortunes" is simply invaluable.

Brookstein has a highly successful track record as a manager of brokerage hedge funds, venture capital ventures, and investment advisory firms. Since 1973, Brookstein has made a succession of shrewd, prudent, and insightful financial decisions that have immensely benefited those intelligent enough to follow his guidance. In particular, Brookstein oversaw a number of lucrative mining and natural gas investments for his clients, and correctly navigated the dot.com boom in the 1990's. His assertion that he tends to "read the tealeaves in advance of the crowd" is borne out by ample evidence. In "Nanotech Fortunes" Brookstein offers compelling evidence that the field of nanotechnology is poised for a boom in the near future. Unlike the dotcom bubble of the 1990's, the nanotech boom is based on a solid foundation of science, and a series of cascading nanotech booms will result in a staggeringly large net creation of wealth. When Brookstein claims that "the nanotechnology revolution will last decades and literally destroy untold businesses - disrupting and leapfrogging technologies that only a few years earlier, were considered cutting edge" he is not exaggerating. Indeed, Brookstein fastidiously avoids engaging in hyperbole or making unwarranted assumptions, and rigorously maintains a sober and lucid tone throughout the book.

Brookstein lays out a comprehensive course for navigating the perilous waters of nanotech investing. By combining experience, knowledge, and acumen honed over four decades of investing with the technical wisdom of a diverse group of highly regarded scientific experts, Brookstein has crafted a focused strategy that will avoid the pitfalls of more novice investors. Discerning which startup corporations are worthy of investment is a difficult task, and it is here that "Nanotech Fortunes" truly shines. Brookstein thoroughly yet concisely describes the myriad mistakes - ranging from miscalculating customer acquisition costs to funding researchers pet science projects - that beset nanotech startups. The author has compiled a series of metrics to judge which startups should thrive and outmaneuver their competition. Although no investing approach will result in a sustained 100% success rate, Brookstein's methods have consistently yielded substantial profits, and returns on his initial nanotech investments are already beginning to trickle in. Those wishing to understand, participate in, and benefit from the coming boom will want to carefully read "Nanotech Fortunes" sooner rather than later.

Darrell Brookstein is a managing director of The Nanotech Company, and runs [...] a website to which I have contributed articles and interviews.

Book Description

Throughout human history, mankind has turned its goals and dreams toward exploration. With wagon trains, ships, satellites and starships, humanity has chosen to seek out the new frontier, to explore new worlds, and to go where no human has gone before-even to the furthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant. There, Captain Janeway and the crew of the Starship Voyager™ have discovered many strange and wondrous civilizations...but few as alien as the Chiar.

An advanced and scienti?c people who have made great strides with nanotechnology, the Chiar expanded internally rather than externally. Every inch of their planet is crawling with the tiniest bits and pieces of arti?cial intelligence imaginable, working in concert as the new lifeblood of this mechanical world. The people themselves are inseparable from their nanites, which layer their skin and provide extra limbs or senses as required.

Caught up in a bitter civil con?ict, some Chiar will try to take advantage of their meeting with the crew of Starship Voyager. They imagine that their homegrown nanites can harness the incredible power of the deadly Borg, and instead set in motion an experiment that goes devastatingly out of control.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read!.......2004-05-25

I think this book was probably one of the better Voyager books I have read. It took me about 2-3 days to read completely, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who likes Voyager or just Star Trek in General.

5 out of 5 stars Nanotech Rocks!.......2004-01-26

I thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek Voyager Nanothech War! The suspense and deep emotion of this book kept me coming back for more. The characters are very likeable, and I also think that the book was very well written. I won't ruin it for you by telling you exactly what happens, but I think it's safe to say that the emotional developement of Seven of Nine was very well played out in this book. I rate it five stars. Read it! Nanotech Rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Science Fiction.......2003-08-15

The starship Voyager, in need of repairs after an ion storm, arrives at the planet Chiar, which has just aquired warp drive technology. The Chiar use nanotechnology in every aspect of their lives, it is ubiquitous there, and they seem peaceful enough. They are willing to help the Voyager crew with repairs, in exchange for minor software items, but it is soon learned that the Chair are in the midst of global strife, and several factions want the Borg nanotechnology that Seven incorporates in her body, to supplement their own nanotechnology and aid them in their war effort. The characters of Seven of Nine, Tom Paris, B'Elanna, and Chakotay are highlighted with good character development inside a superb storyline.

I would classify this as a light summer read, great for Star Trek fans and sci-fi readers in general. The story has an interesting twist near the end as well.

4 out of 5 stars Charming and relaxing!.......2003-08-07

I enjoyed reading about Chakatoy and Seven's relationships at the holdeck.Tom and Seven are held hostage. Tom's memory had been erased by the nanties. I felt sorry for Tom. A lovely touch at the end. It was very relaxing to read.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read!.......2003-07-07

Piziks does a fine job with the VOYAGER crew. You can hear them saying these lines in your head! The aliens are way cool, and the plot kept me turning pages.

I also found out he writes "regular" science novels under the name Steven Harper. I don't know why he uses a pen name for these books, but they're also great reads!

Book Description

Hype, hope, or horror? A vivid look at nanotechnology, written by an insider and experienced science writer.

The variety of new products and technologies that will spin out of nanoscience is limited only by the imagination of the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs drawn to this new field. Steve Edwards concentrates on the reader's self interest: no military gadgets, wild fantasies of horror nanobot predators and other sci-fi stuff, but presents a realistic view of how this new field of technology will affect people in the near future. He is in close contact with many pioneers in nanotechnology, and includes their backgrounds to allow readers, especially college students considering a career in the field, to better imagine themselves in such positions. However, technology does not develop in a vacuum, and this book also looks at the social, political and economic changes attendant upon the development of nanotechnology.

For the science-interested general public as well as chemists, students, lecturers, chemical organizations, materials scientists, journalists, politicians, industry, physicists, and biologists.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great history and insight.......2007-07-04

Nanotechnology is everyone's "in" topic, the word whispered to the graduate at the pool party. Steve Edwards is eminently qualified to take us on a delightful tour that links past, present and future in this fascinating yet poorly understood world. His career, from his graduate work in biochemistry at one of the world's leading research institutions through periods of research, teaching and consulting, has placed him in unique perspective to be our guide and to help us enjoy the journey.

The skeleton of Dr. Edwards's book is a collection of historical and biographical sketches of leaders in the conceptual and developmental world of nanotechnology. In these interesting vignettes, many of them derived from personal experience and exposure, we also gain insight into much of the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology itself. Discussions of nanoinstrumentation, nanoparticle configurations, nanoscience in nature, and applications to electronics, medicine, energy, and the emerging world of commercialization of nanoscience, each worthy of increased contemplation and study, unfold in well-placed historical and scientific contexts.

The discussions culminate in a superb presentation of ethical issues related to nanotechnology, where common concerns are laid out, where in the words of the hymn "our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares," and end with a call to a cautious but confident walk into the future.

Frequent, clear illustrations and photos add interest and understanding to the book. However, typographical and grammatical errors are also frequent. This book deserves a better editorial reading than it received.

4 out of 5 stars broad, promising scope.......2007-05-28

It's a well summarised look at the breadth of the nanotech field. Commencing with speculations by Richard Feynman in 1959 about how small devices could ultimately be made. Well before Gordon Moore wrote his observations in a paper that would be the basis of Moore's Law.

Edwards goes on to describe companies and researchers currently engaged in such tasks as fabricating carbon nanotubes. Or finding novel uses for the Atomic Force Microscope, like dip pen nanolithography. Where the AFM can trace out patterns on a surface in controlled manner. Quantum dots also make an appearance. Along with the buckyball (C60) and its variants.

A very topical chapter speculates on how nanotech products might aid the production, storage or transmission of energy. Of these, perhaps the use of quantum dots in LEDs that would replace incandescent light bulbs is the low hanging fruit. While improved solar panels are another potentially vast market.

5 out of 5 stars The Best History of Nanotechnology Ever Written.......2006-04-07

As the author of "Nanotech Fortunes" and the managing director of Nanotechnology.com, I can say without fear of contradiction that Steve Edwards' book is the best history of nanotechnology ever written. In fact, it might be mis-titled. Perhaps it should be simply called "The History of Nanotechnology"?

That might make it seem "dry" and boring, but Edwards has written an intriguing, insightful, almost downright chatty and extremely personal as well as personable history BY FOCUSING ON THE KEY INDIVIDUALS and their totally incredible contributions.

The book benefits from the fact that Mr. Edwards is actually DR. EDWARDS and a trained nanoscientist in his own right.

What could be better? - a wonderful story, told by someone who is witty, writes well, is at home with an awful lot of the "true insider" perspective, CAN EXPLAIN IT SIMPLY TO FOLKS WHO CAN'T REMEMBER HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY and actually knows what he's talking about!

More of his knowledge and wit are shared at BlogNano.com.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stories could be more imaginative, but..........2003-03-29

I bought this book at a garage sale for dirt cheap cuz the owner recommended I read it since I was just getting into sci-fi. At the time I was really only familiar with Arthur Clarke, Asimov, Poul Anderson, Heinlein, and a few others, and this book was my grand introduction to the great "Hard SF" authors such as Stephen Baxter, Greg Bear, and Greg Egan. The stories are concise yet detailed, and all have intriguing plots. SF short stories are great for when you just wanna lose yourself for a little while at a time and visit realms as yet unimagined. I read most of this book while videotaping a very long and boring court deposition, so you can see I was aching for some type of escape! My only complaint about this book is that I wish it had had more titles and authors to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Great nano-stories.......2001-01-04

This is a great series of stories dealing with nano-tech. As it true with all anthologies, they vary - some are really good, some not so good. I had already read Blood Music by Greg Bear and the first story is what he based that book on. Still good though.

Overall lots of good stories.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2000-01-03

A readable, thought provoking series of stories on the theme of nanotechnology. Eight short stories, one poem and a novella. No bad stories and one truely great one.

I liked this book a lot. I had only read one of the stories before in a magazine anthology. The others were new to me.

The highlight of the book is "We were out of our minds with joy" by David Marusek. This story has enough in the way of ideas and development potential to spawn a novel. The price is worth paying for this novella alone. Indeed, at the price, it seems like a bargain!

While Marusek is still an emerging talent, other authors featured here such as Bear, Egan, di Fillipo and Baxter will be more familiar.

At the end of the book, the editors add a list of further reading on the same subject. I will be following up a number of their suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars Some stories are really great... some aren't.......1999-10-03

There's a couple of stories in this book that make it worth the purchase price. Especially the first couple of stories and the last one. Some of the stories in the middle are fairly weak. I even ended up skipping over a couple after the first ten pages or so... However, the stories that are good are really good! I hope that the authors develop them into full novels.

4 out of 5 stars a great read.......2002-01-24

I found The Nanotech Chronicles to be a great read. The short stories are fresh and original, but basic human tendencies and failings are recognizable despite, or even through the new technologies.

This is one of those books that are often lent out and not returned. That's why I'm buying it again.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but lacking.......1999-09-15

The book hits on several interesting ideas - body modification, technology in the hands of bored youth, and unitended consequences. Like many sci-fi pulp fiction it dealt too much with the technology while not spending time on the social ramifications and the human condition. Conflicts tended to be "Oh, NO! I can't get the machines to work!" instead of "Oh, No! I've doubled the average lifespan for humans with a shot." The vignettes are fun to read, something good for summer, but don't expect anything more.

          Product Description

This up-to-date and comprehensive electronic book on CD-ROM presents an enormous library of government documents and publications covering all aspects of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), the flagship scientific computing facility for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy. As one of the largest facilities in the world devoted to providing computational resources and expertise for basic scientific research, NERSC is a world leader in accelerating scientific discovery through computation. NERSC is located at Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, California. The more than 2000 computational scientists who use NERSC perform basic scientific research across a wide range of disciplines. These disciplines include climate modeling, research into new materials, simulations of the early universe, analysis of data from high energy physics experiments, investigations of protein structure, and a host of other scientific endeavors. NERSC is known as one of the best run scientific computing facilities in the world. While NERSC provides some of the largest computing and storage systems available anywhere, what distinguishes NERSC is its success in creating an environment that makes these resources effective for scientific research. NERSC systems are reliable and secure, and provide a state-of-the- art scientific development environment with the tools needed by the diverse community of NERSC users. NERSC provides intellectual services that allow computational scientists to be more effective -- consultants who are experts in computational science and performance tuning, visualization assistance, training, customized support, and other services. NERSC resources include Franklin, a Cray XT4 supercomputer, which will arrive at NERSC in early 2007. Composed of AMD dual core processors running at 2.6 GHz, it will have 19,344 compute CPUs, each with 2 GB of memory per CPU, and will deliver sustained performance of at least 16 teraflop/s (trillion calculations per second). The system will have a bisection bandwidth of 6.3 TB/s and 402 TB of usable disk. Contents include: Technical Reports, Annual Reports, Science Driven Systems Seaborg, Bassi, Jacquard, DaVinci, PDSF, NERSC Global Filesystem; Self-Assessments.
