Book Description
A personal exploration of the conjunction between ancient Mesoamerican prophesy and New Age higher consciousness.
• Selected by the Independent Publisher's Book Awards as one of the top two New Age books of the year.
• Explores ancient prophesies and their relevance in the contemporary world.
The Incan and Mayan cultures saw themselves as "children of light"--descended from celestial realms--and their prophecies foretell a time of great spiritual awakening. They prophesied a time when the gateways to higher consciousness would open once again. That time is now.
Award-winning author Judith Bluestone Polich draws on her extensive research in quantum physics, archeoastronomy, holography, cosmology, and pioneering studies of human consciousness to show how science and contemporary thought are consistent with this ancient knowledge. As the ancients predicted, the human god-seed is beginning to awaken, and modern civilization is finally beginning to perceive human potential in ways that the ancient cultures accepted as truth. Polich introduces techniques for awakening our own human potential through dreaming, meditations, and the power of sacred sites.

of moderate interest.......2007-06-02
I WANTED TO LIKE THIS BOOK...but it was rambling and very poorly edited. The people who want to convince others that these concepts are true are going to have to do better! Moments of interest... but, overall, disappointing.
Return of the Children of Light.......2007-05-19
I am still reading this book but it is well written. I just loved it and found myself taking notes as I read it which is something I never do. Well worth buying and reading.
The best overview to Andean Mysticism.......2005-01-25
This is a great overview to Andean Mysticism. It covers a wide variety of sources into one well done collection. The author has done her homework and it shows. This books gives you a very strong impression of Incan and Mayan thought. Very well done.
For more advanced studies you can look into Shaman, Healer, Sage by Villoldo and Masters Of The Living Energy by Joan Parisi Wilcox.
Just a little to new agey for my taste.......2002-01-24
The author believes that we are of a higher consciousness and order, she also believes that matter is light frozen in form. The author links the Biblical Elohim with ancient gods that are dedicated to help humanity evolve. ''Possible''. This is a short but interesting book on ancient knowledge. Worth a look at.
Fabulous book!.......2001-11-07
Hi. This book is required reading if you're considering a trip to Peru, Mexico, or are currently on your own mystical cosmic voyage. There are so many wonderful bits of information and it really helped me understand a lot about things that had happened in my life during and after trips to Peru, Greece, Mexico, and other power spots. If you're inquisitive and steadfastly "on the Path", then this should be in your hands. Five stars. To the author: Please write more books, Judith! Thank you for bringing forth this incredible book.

A fun, light and breezy read!.......2007-09-24
The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes is a wonderful guilty pleasure. I loved the three different romances as well as the magic and mystery. I would love to read more about these magical sisters.
a fun read.......2007-09-16
this is realy a 4 1/2 star book - it starts slow but well worth sticking with - approach it as a fun read and you will be very satisfied.
Three Writers, Three Sisters, Three Stars.......2007-08-27
This is the story of the magical Fortune sisters, each with a gift. Dee, the eldest, is a shapeshifter. Lizzie, the middle sister, transmutes things, and Mare, the youngest, can move things with her mind. For the past 12 years, they have lived a nomadic life, fleeing when their powers drew attention, or when their aunt Xantippe found them. After Xan murdered their parents, Dee took her sisters and fled, hiding out in small towns. Now, their aunt has found them again, only she has also sent each sister the love of her life as part of her evil plans. For Dee, it's Danny James, in town to research the Fortune family for a book. Elric is a powerful wizard who is sent to Lizzie to stop her from destroying the fabric of the universe with her experiments. Xan sends Jude Green to Mare, only at the same time, Mare's old love Crash returns after having left town five years before. Mare should be falling for Jude, a vice president for her employer, Value Video!!, but he leaves her cold. Instead, it's Crash who stirs things up again, rekindling old memories while making her want him anew.
Unbeknownst to the Fortune sisters, Xan has a plan to strip them of their powers and take them for herself. They slowly uncover her plotting and scheming, only Dee and Lizzie are so crazy in love they don't care where their men came from. Mare can't quite get over the fact that Crash left her for five years, and his feelings for her may not be real; they may just be the result of Xan's love spell, which isn't enough for her. As the sisters fall deeply in love, they suddenly attain some control over the powers that had so long controlled them. It's a good thing, because they're going to need everything they've got to put a stop to Xan.
Unfortunately, Jennifer Crusie seems to be another victim of the current publishing craze of having a new book on the shelves every few months. She has the integrity not to let her writing suffer by choosing to collaborate and share the burden, spreading herself thin in a high quality way. The parts of this book that Crusie wrote are engaging, even featuring a few laugh-out-loud moments. Her co-authors, however much they may have attempted to mimic her writing style, do not have her chops. Those parts of the book are noticeably inferior, at times even boring. The book dragged in the middle and, because each author wrote from the perspective of a different sister, everything that happened occurred three times. First Dee met her match, then Lizzie, then Mare. Then Dee discovered burgeoning feelings for her man, then Lizzie, then Mare. This got repetitive when each phase of their new relationships was experienced three times in a row. Three first kisses, three detailed sex scenes, three confessions of their secret powers. They didn't even bother to mix up the order of events from sister to sister. The only departure from the formula was the fact that Mare had a preexisting relationship with Crash. Actually, everything about Mare was good because it was written by Jennifer Crusie. It was the rest of the book that wasn't up to par.
Collaborations are a fun idea, but they'd be more fun for readers if the authors involved were all of the same quality. Jennifer Crusie is a wonderful writer with excellent books to her credit, so I have to wonder why she keeps sharing her skills with others. I'm all for experiments and trying new things, and I admire her for helping her friends get some recognition by coauthoring this novel. Unfortunately, they just don't have her skills. I'll always look forward to a new Crusie novel, but I wish she'd go back to working alone.
Fun, but conflict packed romance done very well.......2007-08-10
I purchased this book because I'm a huge Crusie fan, and the website for the book won me over, reading how much the writer's had enjoyed their characters. As a Crusie fan, I was not disappointed. And I'll be checking out the backlists for Dreyer and Stuart because their storylines were written so well.
A collaborative effort, the effect is seamless. Three romances, packed into a weekend. I know, a weekend? But these writer's know what they're doing because it's believable and you root for the characters to defeat Xan (an entertaining--twisted, but entertaining--villain) and find their happy-ever-afters.
The pacing is flawless, and how could it not be? Three days to resolve a lifetime of conflict, and they make every scene count.
But after the last page, my favorite part of the book was how fun it was. Sure, the dialogue was hillarious, and the situations magic-gone-wrong causes are imaginative and engaging. But, it's a fun read. You'll enjoy this book.
It was Ok, but not outstanding........2007-08-08
When I first started to read this book, I felt like a was reading a knockoff version of Yasmine Galenorn's SOTM series. Then I realize that although there were some similarities, this book was different from that series. It had its good moments were the characters got you involved in their stories, then there were times when the stories dragged. Overall, it was an OK book.

The Training & Work of an Initiate.......2007-08-23
Dion Fortune remains one of the foremost gaurdians of western esoteric tradition, sadly forgottem in today's new age mentality.
A golden arrow pointed in the right direction.......2007-04-19
It should be noted that there is another book entitled `Dion Fortune's Esoteric Orders and Their Work and the Training and Work of the Initiate'. The `Esoteric Orders and Their Work' (1928), is the companion volume to `The Training & Work of an Initiate' (1930). These books were written together with the launching of Dion Fortune's school `The Fraternity of inner light'; of this school there is an address at the back of this book of which you can write to and acquire a correspondence course.
"The Training and Work of an Initiate shows how, from ancient Qabalistic, Greek, and Egyptian roots, the Western Esoteric Systems have an unbroken initiation tradition that has been handed down from adept to neophyte. In this book, Dion Fortune indicates the broad outlines and underlying principles of these systems, illuminating an obscure and greatly misunderstood aspect on the path... you will discover how initiates prepare body, mind and spirit for the challenging journey that is the esoteric path" back cover.
This is a marvellous book which definitely points the true initiate in the right direction. This book is divided in three parts 1.Ethical 2. Theoretical & 3. Practical. Dion Fortune gives us some concrete techniques and insights, alludes to, but does not go the greater distance as to what is discoverable in other works. Still the essence of what is required of a true initiate is described in this book. This book smashes the delusion of what is espoused by most of the `New age' movement and shows us that serious effort and understanding is required for those on the greater path.
Dion provides a marvellous insight into Christianity's true beginnings. The men who made primitive Christianity were made from two sources, initiates of the mysteries and non-initiates. The writer of the gospel of John was influenced by the mystery schools, as was the writer of the Apocalypse, influenced by Qabalistic thought. There was a struggle between the two types of Christians, initiates and non-initiates, the latter winning out in the end. " The orthodox then gradually developed, as was inevitable, something of a mystery system of their own in the sacraments, which are ritual magic pure and simple..."pg 88
"The highest degree of initiation is crucifixion for the salvation of mankind the various abreacting of racial karma. Let those who aspire to initiation bear ever in mind what reward it is that will crown their efforts with a crown of thorns. Unless we have so great a love for humanity, so great a sympathy for suffering, that we are not only willing but anxious to avail ourselves of the opportunity in some small measure to offer ourselves as a sacrifice for the sins of the people, there is no point in setting out upon the way of initiation, for its goal will be dust and ashes to the man who remains unregenerate. The aim of initiation is neither magical power nor marvellous experience, but simply the ability to offer an acceptable sacrifice that shall be effectual for the neutralisation of cosmic Karma" pg 90
"...Divination, which is the discernment of the unseen, is a very different thing from fortunetelling..."pg 93
Some essential tools of an initiate > knowledge of psychology > Jung > Consciousness and the ego. Pg 95
"Viewed metaphysically, all the planes of manifestation are different types of existence, and the seven bodies of man, not excepting the physical, are different modes of consciousness and different types of organisation of force. Unless we know exactly what consciousness is and how apprehension takes place, we shall be unable to translate our consciousness from one mode to another." Pg 104
"Consciousness is raised to a given plane by inhibiting the thoughts of the modes of consciousness of all the planes below it. This of course requires perfect concentration" pg 105
"...unless men work at occultism as they work for the prizes of their professions, they will not achieve" pg 107
A well-written and informative book.......2003-07-30
As usual, Ms. Fortune cuts to the chase, though I wouldn't say that this book is an easier read than her other texts. I found myself jotting down notes for future use, so despite the fact that it was written decades ago, her points are still applicable. She is very opinionated however, and obviously had definitive views on the purpose for occult study. Study for personal gain toes the line of dark magic, according to her.
She does not mention her contemporary, Aleister Crowley, by name but is quick to send sharp barbs of disapproval on what she calls "phallic rites" and other "black" practices. Sometimes she sounds almost eclectic and open-minded, but the next moment, she launches into a series of Christian apologetics. One would think that an accomplished psychic would move past such dogma. Like most Victorian/Edwardians, she clearly states that the progenitors of the Western Mystery Tradition: Judaism, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece were 'primitive' in comparison to Christianity, simply because Christianity misappropriated the 'important parts' of their doctrines. So if you can look past her quirks, she does give valuable information on the prerequisites to joining a society and more importantly, what being a master adept entails. It's not for the faint-of-heart but she says that even the failed aspirant is blessed in the attempt to climb Jacob's Ladder.
EXPLANATION OF SANE OCCULTISM.......2003-07-13
In this very readable work, Dion Fortune deals with the tradition of initiation in the Western Esoteric Tradition and explains the principles of these esoteric systems. An interesting foreword by Gareth Knight discusses Fortune's place in metaphysical thought, declaring her a great synthesist ever holding a balance between the strands of hermetic occultism, devotional mysticism and nature mysticism. Knight even refers to Tolkien's account of creation in The Silmarillion as reflecting Fortune's approach to certain metaphysical questions! The book provides information on how the initiate prepares the mind, spirit and body for the journey on the esoteric path and what the path of initiation looks like. The book is divided into three parts: Ethical, Theoretical and Practical. It details the way of initiation, preparations and daily life upon the path and provides a ground plan of illumination. There is also valuable information on the training of the mind and the body. I found the discussion of the relationship between natural and esoteric science very insightful and her division of what she terms "illuminism" into two branches - mysticism and occultism, very informative. According to the author, mysticism aims at the speediest possible attainment of the divine union of the soul with its source and in order to achieve this it eliminates all that causes separation. Occultism on the other hand, aims to organise and master phenomena and bring them into harmony with the eternal law of the real. Ultimately, the difference is only a matter of temperament. Fortune then proceeds to classify religions and movements like Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Theosophy, Spiritualism, Christian Science and New Thought into these two branches. The chapter on the Western Esoteric Systems deals with the Qabalistic, Greek and Egyptian traditions, claiming that they all contributed to modern Western esotericism that in addition, also draws on Eastern thought. The book contains a Tabular Classification of Illuminism demonstrating the mystical/occult division in detail as well as an index and a short biography and portrait of Fortune. This is a well written book explaining most of the important points of the occult path and the practice of sane occultism. Highly recommended.
Mystery Schools Exist Now. Are you an initiate?.......2002-09-28
Jesus of Nazareth was taught in mystical schools. Back then, we know that there were many. On my spiritual quest I had studied some of Alice Bailey's books, including those on initiation. I had wondered - am I being trained by a master? Am I an initiate? Reading this book and _Esoteric Orders and Their Works_, also by Dion Fortune, has answered my personal questions, and let me understand that this work is going on now.
Those two books also differentiated the mystic from the occultist - a fine point to the novice, but important in understanding yourself and others. I'm reading the rest of her books. If you are studying the Ageless Wisdom, shamanism, and/or the occult, you will love Ms. Fortune's books. You MUST READ her _Cosmic Doctrine_. Very deep.

WAY dated!!!.......2007-09-15
Soldier of Fortune: First published in mid-80s, and attitudes toward sexuality VERY outdated.
(She is an adult professional living in Chicago (with no past traumas/issues) and she has never even gone to second base???)
The heroine is supposed to be (simultaneously) way into a merc TV show, but totally unaware of any of the weapons used?
She is also completely naive about her body/sexuality (and she grew up on a ranch???) -- so naive as to belong to another century. She does not have the attitude of a modern woman who has chosen to be picky about when to share her body with someone; she has the a-sexuality of the forced, complete ignorance of aristocratic female children from Georgian England.
Also, characters not consistent in the attitudes/development of feeling towards each other or about themselves. Result is that entire relationship is superficial-- boring....
Great Book!!!!!!.......2006-06-12
I really loved Soldier of Fortune. The second story was a bit too far fetched for me too like. In Soldier of Fortune, Gabby has worked for J.D. for years and they still haven't gotten to know eachother. Then J.D.'s sister is kidnapped and they go off to save her together. Sparks fly when after his sister is saved they run into a little trouble and Gabby ends up saving J.D.'s life. He isn't thrilled about that and he makes it known. He pushes Gabby out of his life. Then realizes he was wrong. I loved these two together. I thought they were a perfect match. There was a lot of romance in this story between Gabby and J.D. For Diana Palmer fans you know that the male in her stories are sometimes overbearing, but I think it fit in this story perfectly because of J.D's life. Lots of action also, when they are fighting in the jungle.
The second story, I didn't like as much. It moved way too fast for me at the beginning and way too slow at the end. It seemed that Eric was taking too much time trying to figure out what he wanted. Dani just let Eric walk all over her in this story and I don't think once she stood up for herself. The only thing she held her ground on was that she wouldn't be with him if he didn't give up his job, and even then she let him come back again and again whenever he wanted. They met in Mexico on a vacation. They fall in love almost instantly and then she learns she is pregnant and he comes back, but then he spends the rest of the book trying to decide if he wants her or not.
Mercinaries with hard hearts...........2006-06-09
This book is of two great mercinary men and two equally strong women.
Soldier of fortune.... Gabby Darwin is a paralegal for one of the most pristine criminal lawyers in the city of Chicago, J.D.Brettman. When J.D.'s (Jacob Dane) sister is kidnapped and held for ransom, he asks Gabby to go on the hunt with him.
Will Gabby find the love she seeks in the midst of the jungle? Will J.D. ever learn to trust those who are close to him?
The Tender Stranger.... After going to a book singing and now headed towards a few days of vacation in Mexico, Dani St. Clair's life will forever be changed. On her flight in to Mexico seated next to a blond giant who makes her hot all over. That giant happens to be one of J.D.'s best friends and merc buddy. Things happen fast while in Mexico for these two, who end up married. On the way home the plane is hijacked and Erics' true colors start to show. Will Dani be able to accept Eric and his choice of career? Will Eric let the past rule his future?
I love both of these stories. The hero's were great even though a bite rough. but redemed themselves. As for the women, what can I say that I agree with both of them and how they acted was something that I would have done myself.
Cuddle up with this book.......2006-02-25
Once again Diana Palmer has combined romance, mystery and intrigue in two stories with an exotic flavor. Both heroes are great, although J.D. in Soldier of Fortune would have rated a good kick from me once or twice. But watching his redemption and seeing the romance uinfold was good. The Tender Stranger was a little different in the way the story ubnfolded, but Eric and Dani are a combustible couple and watcing them conmes to terms with their relationship made a very satisfying story.

I found this book a bit dull and very predictable. True, I read it to the end, but this was partly because I couldn't believe it would play out exactly as I predicted early on. Can't say I was surprised one bit at the ending.

I had read several of Ms Spindler's previous books and while they held my interest I was not overly impressed. Therefore I had hesitated on this book but I'm glad I got it. Well worth the read!

The end of the trilogy.......2006-05-03
This book culminates the crystal trilogy by Raphaell with some pretty powerful tools, descriptions of the last six master crystals, an overview of advanced chakra systems, information about the "predominant power stones," and many new gemstones not covered by the previous texts.
This is a must-have for any advanced worker with crystals. There are a lot of pioneering configurations of crytsals that were popularized because of Katrina's research, and her trilogy represents the best perspective of many of these crytsals. This book helps push the reader to experience many new and exciting developments in the crystal community while expounding upon and expanding older topics, especially with regard to Earth Keeper crystals.
Advance usage of Crystals.......2002-10-14
Katrina introduces the 12 chakra system in this book. She uses higher vibration crystal to activate the chakras outside our body. Crystalline Transmission (transform our physical body to be a crystal!!!) is the goal of crystal practice to adapt the increasing frequency in the Earth. Though this book has be written for 10 yrs, it is still advance for most crystal users.
The last of the Trilogy.......2002-03-30
This is the culmination of her work with "crystals" and should be read AFTER the two earlier books. It is unique in that it is not "Hokey" but well grounded and useful. I studied with her while she was still in Taos, NM and am indebted to her for her insights into the crystalline world.
By the way; It's KATRINA, NOT KARRINA
Third in a Triology about crystals for the advanced.......1997-01-15
In this book the third and last of the series, Katrina takes one step by step to the higher levels of crystal work, again
intergrating the proper stones for this level. It is a call to enlightment and discusses the transpersonal chakras. Very
informative about the intergration of the Soul Star and Earth
Star and the Stellar Gateway. Again as always, easy to read, well presented. Highly recommend this book. Gail Fo

Not what it might have been.......2001-03-19
Having enjoyed Dion Fortune's novels and other occult works, I eagerly anticipated this supposed definitive biography. However, as a biography it has its shortcomings. It tells us very little about Dion as a person. It does not bring her or her associates alive, as a good biography should. It says nothing about her personal relationship with her husband Dr Thomas Evans or their split up.It may be argued that her occult work was more important than her personal life, but we expect in a biography more personal details than are given here. The biography by Alan Richardson, though opinionated, is more interesting to read and gives a more extensive discussion of her novels. It is interesting to find out that when she was born Dion was thought to be dead. This happened also to pioneer mystic Anna Kingsford, an influence on Dion through McGregor Mathers and the Golden Dawn. The book gives for the first time a reliable estimate of Dion's birth time: 55 minutes past midnight(6 Dec.1890, Llandudno). Some may find the inner workings of her occult group as given interesting, but apparently the Society of the Inner Light as it exists today has moved on from the fuddy duddy stuff. We still wait for a real biography of Dion.
a fascinating book about an amazing woman.......2000-11-08
Finally, a biography that does justice to Dion Fortune! This well-written and insightful book kept me up into the wee hours. Besides a full account of Dion Fortune's life (written with the cooperation of her Society of the Inner Light, and the use of its archives), there are rare photographs, and numerous excerpts from spiritual communications received by her. In addition to the outer history, Gareth Knight seamlessly weaves in a deep understanding of the inner dynamics of DF's life, and the life of the Society she founded. This is a book not to be missed!

A very enjoyable detective story.......2004-01-14
This a detective style story: running down leads, sorting true from false clues, and getting shot at or otherwise threatened all along. I usually have various complaints about Friedman's writing style, but not for this one. There is a lot of action, mostly travel and questioning people, with some combat, and all of it is well told. The knife fight is especially good. The descriptions in general are very good, very clear. The characters are vivid and with plenty of depth. Riker's female Impriman partner is a strong, well developed character, not as devious but with more common sense. There is a fair amount of humour, and a couple of scenes are real gems. The plot of the story is interesting and turns out to be surprisingly intricate. The pacing at which the plot is revealed is well judged. In addition, we are given the back story of Riker's original visit to the planet at nicely judged key points in the development of the main plot. All in all, this is a very good and enjoyable story.
STNG #15 Fortune's Light - MJF does mystery!.......2003-09-01
Michael Jan Friedman, Star Trek's most prolific author proffers up this early Star Trek The Next Generation tale in the form of a detective/mystery novel. At the core, most Star Trek novels and episodes are a mystery; here's the problem, Captain and crew "must" solve the mystery in order to bring everything back into order etc... The difference here is that the author has straight written a detective/mystery novel which is an unusual but welcomed change in the Star Trek novel universe.
The premise:
Dante Maxima Seven is a world to which the indigenous humanoids are known as the Imprima and they are controlled by a small but extraordinarily wealthy group known as the Madragi. Several years earlier, Riker was among the first delegation of Federation representatives that conducted first contact with the inhabitants of this world. This was also when he befriended Teller Conlon, who was also a member of that team. Now, years later, a priceless treasure known as Fortune's Light, which belonged to Madraga Criathis has been stolen and Riker's friend, Teller Conlon has been accused of this theft.
What follows from there is interesting, but unfortunately not too terribly intriguing mystery novel in which Riker must discover the truth behind the theft of Fortune's Light and by doing so hopefully clear his friends name. At the same time there is an interesting sub plot in which Data has discovered baseball in the holodeck.
I would recommend this early Star Trek The Next Generation novel to any and all fans of Star Trek novels more as a collectors/completists novelty than anything else. {ssintrepid}
ST-TNG: Fortune's Light.......2003-06-29
Star Trek - The Next Generation: Forture's Light written by Michael Jan Friedman is a well-written book involving a detective stroy plot mixed with sports fiction as the Enterprise crew trys to solve a mystery and recover a theft of the Madraga Criathis family seal the Fortune's Light... that is supposedly stolen by Teller Conlon one of Commander William Riker's best friends.
As this plot unfolds, William Riker is working on a baseball holodeck program and is called away to the surface of Dante Maxima Seven where the government is controlled by huge social/economic entites that control the general population, to find his friend Teller Conlon. Riker leaves the baseball program in the holodeck and Data tries it out. This plot gives Data a real workout with all of the baseball speak and the nuances of the game as Data tries to understand and play the game.
Both plots were well-written as they kept the readers interest, for two unlikely plots to blend together and form the backbone of the book's plots, they melded quite well. This book is well-toughtout as well as well-written and you can tell it by the way the book flows. The only thing that I can't see is Riker being a detective... he's more like a bull in a chna store type who's rough and tumble antics get him out of a lot of tight spots, but Friedman used this quality to an advantage as Riker is teamed up with a local woman who's sole purpose is to help Riker investigate and they run into a lot of impediments along the way. Riker is no "Columbo" but he gets the job done with action-adventure following along with the mystery.
I gave the book only four stars as the character development was a little shallow at times and the plot was rather predictable. Only for those reasons, otherwise the story flowed well and you were entertained as you read on it the book.
Mixed emotions........2003-06-21
This book is a very good example of just how far good writing can take a mediocre concept. I was truly unimpressed with either of the plots in this book, yet found myself being drawn into it in spite of myself due to the excellence of the writing.
I suppose it is unfair to actually say that the plots are BAD. They do not, however, resonate with me at all. The primary plot is a detective and mystery fiction plot in which Riker has to unravel a mystery on a planet where a friend of his has disappeared, allegedly after stealing a priceless artifact. I'm not universally opposed to detective fiction, but I generally find that they don't work overwell as Star Trek plots, and I certainly don't see Riker as a viable Sam Spade type. Further, this plot just seemed rather blase, and it truly required exceptionally adroit writing to get me to care about it. In a way, I never did, but in spite of that, I found it difficult to put the book down toward the end, so Friedman must have been doing something right.
Furthermore, the secondary plot involved Data playing "major league" baseball on the holodeck, trying out a program that Riker had written for himself just before being called away on his mission. Again, I don't necessarily object to sports stories; one of my favorites is "If I Never Get Back", by Darryl Brock. But I don't much care for holdeck stories in general, even if they are merely subplots and not the major focus of the story, nor do I generally care for the "Data does something offbeat in an attempt to learn more about what it means to be human, and in the course of doing so, commits many amusingly silly faux-pas" type of story, of which this was certainly one. In fact, I generally don't believe that baseball and Star Trek mix well; it's one of the things that cause me to grit my teeth whenever it's brought into play in Deep Space Nine due to Ben Sisko's hobby. I certainly disliked the episode "Take Me Out To The Holodeck" about as much as I've disliked any Star Trek episode in any series.
So imagine my confusion to discover that I was actually enjoying the scenes in that subplot also, in spite of the fact that Friedman's apparent knowledge of baseball is somewhat limited, and his claim that both Data and Geordi would have difficulty understanding the concept of a curveball somewhat dubious.(I realize that for years engineering types swore that it was an optical illusion, because it was physically impossible. But those days are ALREADY behind us; certainly, engineers from three or four hundred years in the future should have no difficulty with the concept. Nor do I believe that it would be all that difficult for Data to track the trajectory of a curveball and hit it soundly.)
I find that I can't in good conscience give less that four stars to a book so well written as to be enjoyable and even captivating in spite of a basic concept that I simply can't see the point to, but neither can I give five stars to a book with such an unattractive concept. If you find the idea of mixing detective fiction AND spectator sports fiction with your Star Trek fascinating, you'll certainly love this book. If, as I did, you find either or both of these concepts seriously dubious, you might still like it. But if you're unwilling to deal with the cognitive dissonance produced by enjoying such an unattractive story concept, steer clear of this one.
Riker must recover a stolen artifact.......2003-02-26
Fourtune's Light....a priceless jewled seal of a powerfull trading house, has been stolen and an old friend of Rikers is implicated with it's theft. He can't belive his friend would have done such a thing, and is sent on a mission to find his old friend, and the Fourtunes Light, which must be present for a merger between powerfull houses.
In the meantime, Riker askes Data to check out a holodeck program he's been working on while he's gone. I must say that Data's portraial is innacurate, and I find it hard to belive Data could be so inept(for his standards) at Baseball, and understanding the rules. Still, it's an interresting sub-plot which breaks up the intensity of Rikers mission.
Once underway, Riker and his partner on the planet discover a web of decit and criminal activity. To top it off, someone is now on to Riker and his partner and he's a target from people who want to keep the Fortune's Light hidden, as well as other plots which have far reaching consequences.
A decent, but not great book.

A little friendly meddling by the great-aunt Kate is what ties these three short stories together in this addition to the Silhouette Fortune's Children Series. In the first story, "Angel Baby" by Lisa Jackson, Chase Fortune has one year to turn around a rundown ranch in order to earn it from his great-aunt. His year certainly has an odd start when he rescues neighbor Lesley Bastian from a blizzard and helps deliver her baby! Far from the clingy type, Lesley wants to leave Chase as soon as possible, and get on with the business of reviving her own ranch. But weather and fate transpire against them, and soon they've fallen in love. But when it appears that its either her ranch or his, Chase has to face a tough decision between his home or his heart.
In Barbara Boswell's "A Home for Christmas," Ryder Fortune is given a design firm by his great-aunt Kate, with a stipulation requiring profitability after one year. When another relative recommends Joanna Chandler as an employee, Ryder feels compelled to hire her. Regardless of her good intentions, Joanna is an organizational vacuum. While she fails as his assistant, she certainly steals his heart. Can Ryder convince Joanna to make a permanent merger?
The final story, "The Christmas Child" by Linda Turner, is set in the mountains of Wyoming. Hunter Chase has one year to make his great-aunt's construction company a success, and nothing can tear him away from his work but the desperate plea of Naomi Windsong. Reluctant to rely on any man, Naomi has no choice but to turn to the best tracker in town when her daughter Laura is kidnapped. But when Hunter and Naomi search for Laura, they discover some unexpected passion. Creative and entertaining, these three stories will keep you turning the pages. A good addition to any stocking. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Customer Reviews:
What Christmas stories??.......2006-11-19
First of all, none of these stories really felt like "Christmas" stories. Each Fortune relative had one year (beginning near Christmas, and ending near Christmas) to turn around a farm/business/company. Much of the action takes place in the ensuing year, and only wraps up again (exactly as we expect) the next December. "Angel Baby" was OK, but as another reviewer wrote, I never got the feel for the characters, and never reached the point at which I really cared about them. "A Home for Christmas" was the 2nd story, and I didn't even finish it. A man and his assistant begin a relationship, and apparently she's not good at being an assistant. I didn't care about the characters, and to tell the truth, I didn't see what kind of conflict would have been involved. Skip to the epilogue: boss & woman happily engaged, she's no longer the assistant, yadda-yadda-yadda. (Yawn) The final story, "The Christmas Child," had promise: a woman hires a tracker (conveniently named Hunter) to find her toddler daughter, who's been abducted. Hunter's busy trying to get his Fortune company off the ground, but he puts that aside to find the little girl. Of course, the search requires them to be stranded--alone--in a lonely mountain cabin. Big surprise there, huh? But this is the part that really makes me roll my eyes: the mother's desperate to find her little girl, not sure if she's dressed warmly for cold nights in the mountains. The abductor, the child's natural father, has a questionable temperament, so there's no guarantee he's treating the girl well. So far, I'm on board. yet in the middle of all this, the mother can't stop thinking about touching or kissing Hunter. Huh?? If my kid had been taken away and I thought he or she was cold or scared or hurt, I wouldn't care if Brad Pitt and George Clooney were both standing in front of me, flashing bedroom eyes and diamond engagement rings. I have my priorities.
Bottom line, these stories don't really have ANYTHING to do with Christmas, other than one or two scenes at the beginning and end. I'm not familiar with the Fortune family--apparently they have their own saga and string of novels--and I don't really care to read any more about them. Unless you're a fan of their stories, I wouldn't bother paying good money for this book. (I got it from the library.)
Only worth it if you're collecting the "Fortune" series - otherwise doesn't work as a stand-alone.......2006-10-26
I bought this book because it's a Christmas romance anthology. I hoped that it would work as a stand-alone (since I haven't read any of the other "Fortune" books) but it didn't. Each story was so boring that I never finished any of them.
Lisa Jackson's ANGEL BABY was very dissapointing, especially since I know what this author is capable of. The problem seems to be that she is unable to properly express her talent in this squashed format (less than 120 pages). I didn't feel any chemistry between the two characters. I felt more like they were together for convenience, or because they happened to be thrown together so much, not because of any true, lasting feelings. The author didn't show what really made the characters tick, so I could never really get a handle on why they should be together, forsaking all others. Also, the heroine was a bit of complaining child at times. Two stars.
Barbara Boswell's A HOME FOR CHRISTMAS was just plain boring, in my opinion. The premise is that a secretary and her boss fall in love. The problem was, in trying to show their day-in, day-out routine, I got bored as hell. I felt like I was doing the 9-to-5 grind with them while reading this story. A romance should provide an entertaining escape from the world, not make the reader feel those same stresses all over again. As if we don't get enough of this stuff in real life! Two stars.
Linda Turner's THE CHRISTMAS CHILD was the best effort of the book, but still not phenomenal. The author's portrayal of a mother's pain when her child is abducted was very real and keenly felt by this reader. Again, the compacted format really caused the story to suffer. I felt that the story would have benefited greatly if the author had been given enough room to work. As it was, the romance portion of it wasn't as compelling as the suspense aspect of it. And I didn't really feel that this story fit in with the other ones in this book (or the Fortune series). Given that each of these three stories starts off the same way (and yes, that got pretty tedious) with Kate Fortune giving each of her grand-nephews a business or property. Each hero has to make his "gift" profitable within a year, otherwise, he will lose ownership at the end of the year.
However, Hunter Fortune, hero of THE CHRISTMAS CHILD, rushes away from his business to help find the heroine's daughter, leaving his business to go down the toilet while he's away. So how does that work within the "Kate Fortune bequeaths special gifts that lead to true love for each grandnephew" theme? But in THE CHRISTMAS CHILD, Hunter's gift from Kate has nothing to do with him finding his true love. It felt like this story just didn't fit with the others, which was rather annoying. And after the suspense part of this novella was over, the story lost momentum. I found I no longer cared whether the hero and heroine got together or not. Three stars, as it started off really well.
There are better Christmas romance anthologies out there. Unless you're determined to complete the "Fortune" series, I would recommend that you pass on A FORTUNE CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS.
Excellent story about a TBI survivor in the romance genre........1999-03-13
Hooray for Barbara Boswell! In her short story "A Home For Christmas," in the A FORTUNE'S CHILDREN CHRISTMAS anthology, she completes Joanna Chandler's story of survival after a traumatic accident begun in STAND-IN BRIDE. In a "A Home For Christmas," Joanna finds herself hired as an executive assistant to a reluctanct Ryder Fortune. Joanna's foibles such as her hyperactivity, short attention span, and short term memory deficits (all consequences of the accident that left her brain-injured) drive Ryder crazy, but her warm personality, understanding ear, and sense of humor endear her to him, so that he falls in love with her and she with him. What makes this story wonderful and very rare is that Joanna is clearly a survivor, never a victim of her disabilities. In fact, the word "disabled" is never even printed in the story. Barbara Boswell skillfully interweaves the effects of Joanna's accident into the plot line, so that Ryder's acceptance of Joanna's shortcomings is integral to the resolution of their romance.
