Book Description

The revealing story of one man's struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and his hard-won recovery Nagging doubt: It's a part of everyday life. Who hasn't doubled back to check on a door or appliance? But what if one check wasn't enough? Nor two or three? And what if nagging doubt grew so intense that physical senses became all but useless? Such was the case for Jeff Bell, a husband, father, and highly successful radio news anchorand one of the millions of Americans living with obsessive-compulsived disorder (OCD). Bell's frank and forthright memoir recounts the depths to which this debilitating anxiety disorder reduced himto driving his car in continuous circles, scouring his hands in scalding water, and endlessly rewinding, replaying, and repeating in his head even the most mundane daily experiences. Readers will learn what OCD feels like from the inside, and how healing from such a devastating condition is possible through therapy, determination, and the support of loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars "A life steeped in uncertainty.".......2007-10-07

Jeff Bell uses the metaphor of a tape player to describe his struggle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in his harrowing memoir, "Rewind, Replay, Repeat." Bell has been a successful radio personality for many years, which makes his willingness to come clean about his illness all the more remarkable. He is a doubter, who states, "I have all five of my senses, but tend not to trust any of them." Because he does not believe what he perceives, Bell mentally replays entire sequences of his life over and over again. He also revisits places to check that he has not harmed anyone or failed to do something essential. He calls his story "a tale of fear and torment and agony and shame."

After experiencing a few OCD symptoms as a child, Bell enjoys a normal adolescence, goes on to college, earns an MBA, marries his college sweetheart, and starts a career in commercial radio. He and his wife, Samantha, have a little girl, Nicole. Everything is going wonderfully. Unfortunately, the peace of mind that he enjoyed for so many years is shattered when his OCD returns with a vengeance. He begins to obsess about a near-collision that occurs while he is piloting his father's boat. He spends hours worrying about some minor damage that he may have inflicted on someone else's cabin cruiser. Not only does he think about this event constantly, but he also visits the marina over and over to look for physical clues. This fixation on an unimportant incident takes over his life to such an extent that it begins to affect his marriage and his ability to concentrate at work. He stays up all night worrying, and his sleeplessness makes him groggy during the day. Rather than owning up to his condition, Bell makes a valiant effort to hide the truth from his colleagues, friends, and loved ones. He is living a double life and it is destroying him emotionally.

Even after he reluctantly shares his secret with his family and agrees to seek help, the first therapist that Bell consults has no useful answers for him. Although his devoted wife is steadfast in her support of her beleaguered husband, she finds his behavior increasingly unsettling. After sixteen months of "pent-up rage," Bell curls up on the bathroom floor of his house and bawls like a baby. He is deteriorating and he has no idea what to do to make things better.

"Rewind, Replay, Repeat" illuminates the agonizing world of doubters and checkers--those unfortunate souls who cannot leave well enough alone. OCD sufferers include: the woman who must unlock her front door repeatedly to check the stove; the driver who feels compelled to circle the block to make sure that he didn't run over a pedestrian; the terrified child who keeps asking his mother the same question a thousand times and is never satisfied with the answer; the washers who scrub their hands dozens of times a day until their skin is raw and painful; and the savers who hoard objects of no value until their homes resemble garbage dumps. Medical science has yet to pinpoint exactly what causes the brains of OCD patients to misfire.

This is an intensely personal, painfully honest, and extremely detailed look at one man's journey into the abyss and back. After he learns that he has OCD, an incurable condition, Bell struggles for years to get his life under control with a combination of spiritual awakening, a support group, cognitive behavioral therapy, and drug treatment. "Rewind, Replay, Repeat" is an informative, touching, and vividly written first-person account that will give hope and comfort to OCD sufferers and their families. It is a welcome addition to other excellent non-fiction works on this subject that include the classic "The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing" by Judith Rappaport and "Brain Lock" by Jeffrey Schwartz.

I originally picked this gem up thinking it would be interesting to read from a psychological point of view. Once I started into it, though, I began to recognize certain elements of my own behavior. Though I would not say I am a full-blown OC, I do sometimes have obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors (probably as most people do at some time in their life). Just the title and him referring to the tapes that keep replaying in his brain was enough for me to squash my own destructive thoughts. Whenever I start wasting time on obsessive thoughts, I just think of his analogy of the tapes that keep playing, then rewinding and replaying. I then choose to shut the tape player off. Very freeing! A courageous and interesting story. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Bell.!

Fascinating look into the world of OCD -- spelled out in an informative, entertaining fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! Please Read this Book!.......2007-08-08

I cannot recommend this account of a person's journey into the terrors of OCD highly enough. I suffer from OCD and read as much as I can on this topic, and this is the best personal story I have ever encountered on this subject. Without whining or blaming, the author carefully and honestly shares his torture. With a reporter's skills, he has us on the scene with him, feeling his agony and rooting for his recovery. A close friend who does not have OCD and borrowed my book was equally in awe of the author as she read of his struggle and his eventual recovery. I would recommend this book to family and friends of OCD sufferers as Jeff shares what his wife, children and parents went through during the height of his disorder. Professionals who treat OCD sufferers will benefit from it as well. It will be a real eye opener into our world. You will not be disappointed in this heartfelt, amusing, and heartbreaking story. This is a book I found extemely hard to put down. Please read this book.

5 out of 5 stars true to life.......2007-08-08

This book brought me to tears. It so reminded me of my daughter's struggle with anxiety disorders. One thing that all people need to be reminded of is, Jeff, nor anyone with anxiety disorders, is ever cured. It is not overcome. It is coped with - sometimes better than other times. Your life and those around you are still affected by the disorder. You still have symptoms but are better able to not let them control you. This takes energy. If someone you know has anxiety disorders, remember this.

My daughter read the book for summer reading and loved it. It really made her think about issues that teenagers face and how they try to please their parents. After talking to her, I decided to begin reading it myself. So far, I really enjoy the story as well!

i love this book. its so emotional. it can make you question what death is like you know what i meen? anyway it tells how peter grows up and becomes a new person by looking back at his old actions, like the renaisance in europe. lol

5 out of 5 stars Rewind by William Sleator.......2005-11-04

I thought that the book was amazing . The plot was how Peter had to save his life by going back in time . Peter dies and then somehow he is taken back in time to stop his death. He goes back two, four, and six weeks before his death. The settings were very different through out the book. There is Peter's house, where Peter goes when he dies, and the school. The conflict was weird how he had to change his life or he would be hit and killed again by the car. But he saves his life in the end by helping out his parents. I would definitely read this book again.

3 out of 5 stars < .......2005-04-13

It's a book about is a book about a boy who gets a second chance at life. Peter was run over by a car after running into the street without looking. He was killed instantly. Peter was pulled into the white light where a voice told him he had a chance to go back and fix his life. The voice told Peter that he had 12 hours to plan how he could stop himself from dying, and that once he was ready he could return to any moment he wanted to and attempt to fix his life.
Peter had been told he was adopted by his step-parents when they had found out they were going to have a baby. He was sure they would love the new baby better than him. The reason Peter had ran into the street was because he was hurt and angry. He loved art, not sports (a fact his parents didn't like) . His father wanted Peter to play baseball or build a go-cart or anything "usual" boys do. Peter always had thought it was a joke when his dad had said , "...if you don't do better in school and get more active we can always just take you back to the orphonage...". Peter had made 2 perfectly done marionettes in art class, a clown and an alien, and he also made a puppet stage. When Peter put on a show for his parents, they just said he had wasted his time and he should be outside playing baseball instead of making girly dolls. Peter had worked for a month on the puppets, and this made him angry.
So now Peter thought about what he could do to stop the car from hitting him and to stop himself from dying. This time was his last chance. Peter had messed up the other times. He decided to go back 2 months, and to use his knowledge of what would happen to his advantage. Peter told people what would happen before-hand, like tell the store manager to check his wiring because the building was going to burn down. He also changed his attitude towards his parents. He was nice to them, and in return they were nice to him instead of ignoring him and putting him down. Peter knew he would have to do the puppets show, but maybe this time they would like it. He designed a new play that tested if they really loved him. You'll have to read it to find out what happenned.

Rewind
Rewind is an intriguing book about a boy named Peter who is struck by a car and killed. He is given many chances to live again. Many interesting things happened in this book that probably wouldn't happen in real life. This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing.
Rewind has many things happen in it that probably wouldn't happen in real life. One of these things is he is given a chance to save many peoples lives by knowing what is going to happen in the future. A fire starts in the mall and he calls ahead of time to warn the mall and all the people in it so no one is injured or even killed. He is given a chance to save himself so he can live but he ends up getting hit by another car. This book is very interesting especially with all the abnormal things that happen it keeps you coming back for more. I would recommend this book to people who like science fiction because it is more of a science fiction type book.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not the best.......2004-01-11

I think this book is okay, but NOT the best in the series. The books in the beginning of the series are really good, up until the the Plague Trilogy ones and the last one. Those ones get more and more rediculis. This book is still good if you are into far out stuff, like time traveling. Some of my favorite ones are the *special editions* like #6 And the two shall meet, and #18 Return of the Perfect girls. Overall I would REALLY recomend this series because they have a little bit of everything for everyone, romance, action, and alot of times mystery. Start at the begining of the series.

Have you ever seen or heard of a human clone in your life? Well, if you have, you should read Replica by Marilyn Kaye who writes great books. Amy Candler is not a normal girl. She can do everything better than everyone else. Why is Amy's mom, Nancy, so worried about anyone finding out her secret? Read Replica to find out.
Amy Candler and Nancy live down in Southern California has a very tricky life she has a big secret no one can know. How does she deal with this secret? Does anyone find out her big secret? What happens to Amy?
"What is the big secret?" asked Amy's friend, Tasha. What is the big secret about Amy? Amy, the protagonist, has a big secret and no one can find out not even her best friend. Only her mom can know. To Amy, it is very hard keeping such a big secret away from everyone.
Amy and Nancy can't tell anyone anything that has to do with Amy not being. If anything gets out, Amy, Nancy, and anyone who know will be in serious danger. Amy does not want to put any of her friends in danger but, her secret is too big for everyone except Nancy. What will Amy do?
"Let's go to the park for a picnic!" Nancy's boyfriend, Brad mentions.
"What a great idea," Nancy replies. They go to the park and see a guy wearing ski masks and dressed in black. Who is moving to town? Nancy knows this person, but does Amy get to know this person? Is he here to help Amy, or is he here to find out more about Project Crescent?
Doesn't just reading this make you wonder where Amy and Nancy came from? Did Amy and her mom come from another planet, or are they plain old people. Read Replica and then you can read all about it.

5 out of 5 stars pretty good book.......2002-11-17

A plague is striking mankind, but Amy and Andy and their fellow clones are immune. When they learn of a group of people that can send them back in time, Amy and Andy agree to it, and find themselves going back to the prehistoric era. Amy loses track of Andy but meets up with a group of neanderthals, and befriends a girl named Lucy. Lucy and her friends direct Amy to another camp, one that has aliens and a spaceship. I won't spoil the ending, but this book is fairly good, and you should read it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2002-08-06

This was such a great book! I finished it in about 3 hours I was just so hooked. In the 21st installment of the Replica series, Amy goes back to the prehostric era to try to find a cure for a deadly plague that is preading throuhgout the world. While there she meets alot of new friends and learns alot about what it was like to live in that time. Highly recommended and dont forget to read all the other Replica books along with Play: The Plague Trilogy Book Two and Fast Forward: The Plague Trilogy Book 3 that comes out in sometime this month I think.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2002-04-27

I think this is one of the best of the Replica series. It's cool how Marilyn Kaye introduces new concepts and ideas (aliens, time travel, dinosaurs...) in every book she writes, and it makes you wonder what she's going to come up with next.

5 out of 5 stars Forever a Work of Art.......2005-02-17

I thought Peter Lerangis did an exquisite job at creating a suspensful setting. This book is about a 14-year-old, Adam Sarno, still trying to relieve himself of the four years of grief in result of his best friend drowning in a hockey accident. He finds a video camera that everyone thinks is broken, but he can see into the past with it. Is he merely insane or gifted? The ending was very shocking.

I found this book very enjoyable. I couldn't put it down. The excitement Peter Lerangis crafted into it was amazing. I loved it, I recomend this book to anyone who loves suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2003-02-23

I am a teacher in Newark and had my students read this book in class. They could not put it down and kept reading ahead awaiting what would happen next. Any parents trying to get their child to read should get this book.

Wow were the first words that came out of my mouth. That day I had just gotten back from a used book store and picked this book out. This had been the best book I had ever read. The ending was fasinating and the style of writing he used was, well... super. I loved this book so much I rushed to school the next day and got all my friends to read it. They loved it too, but that wasn't enough, I then got my family to read it. My mom was estatic. I then had to get the rest of the series. And, just like the first, I love them and always will.

5 out of 5 stars Watchers Rewind... Back to a Past that CAN be changed..........2001-11-28

Before I was given this book, it was like pulling teeth to get me to read. After beginning this book, I REALLY could not put it down. I just had to turn another page. And another. And another. It was almost like participating in a soccer game where you just don't know what's going to happen next. I was caught reading this book in class at school. The teacher thought it was so cool that I was so involved in the book, that she actually GAVE me the book! She had never seen me like that, she couldn't believe I was actually reading. Really I couldn't believe it myself!
THIS IS A GOTTA READ BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars A very emotional and downright creepy story.......2001-11-26

Four years ago, a boy named Edgar died in an accident while playing a game of ice hockey. His best friend, Adam, is always reminded of that night in his dreams. He knows he could have helped him and he knows he tried, but the fact remains...it was his idea to go out and play on that ice with Edgar and his other friend Lianna. Even though he knows what happened, he doesn't remember it at all for some reason. Nobody will explain to him what happened, either, because they know he's blocked his memory out for a reason. But he was there and he feels ashamed and guilty, worried that he may never know the details...until one day when he comes across a camera that acts strange, displaying the wrong picture and doing other similar things. Adam presumes it's broken until he see's something from four years ago through the lens of the camera. He steps into the scene in which he is ten and reading a book, and it becomes his reality until he chooses to leave or the camera is disturbed. He uses the camera a few other times and actually rearranges history by interfering with the scenes he experiences. Nobody else can see this, either. The four-year anniversary of Edgar's accident is coming up in a few days and Adam is eagerly awaiting the moment so that he can bring Edgar back. The camera, however, will show Adam things he will not want to see. It will show him the truth, but the truth is far from what he thinks happened. In fact, it's much worse. Soon, the camera is missing and time is running out before the day arrives. Adam must retrieve it in time and keep it safe while he attempts to change history and bring back his best friend from the dead.

The second book in the Watchers series is far superior to the first. Peter Lerangis has well-developed his knack for writing the mysterious and suspensful, and in this book even the innermost emotions of a hurting person. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last sentence when a shocking ending via Sixth Sense occurs. I enjoyed this book way more than Last Stop and I found it even more envolved and intriguing. It should not be overlooked by anyone of any age.

          Book Description

Jonathan Goldman has a problem. He's just been ousted from the company he created. A one hit wonder singer/songwriter and now successful record producer, his life is suddenly thrown into complete and utter turmoil. His former business partners have only one goal - to ruin his life and do him as much harm as possible. At sixty, no other label will hire him. Alone, with only his handful of friends to rally around him, Jonathan Goldman is on a downward spiral from which he may never recover. And then... people begin to die. Written in vivid detail and a unique style, Rewind is a taut, suspenseful, chilling, and often funny look at how a decent person can be dragged through the mud by people who enjoy that particular pastime. It's also a colorful peek inside the music business, and the day-to-day process of how albums are actually produced.

          5 out of 5 stars Sweet Revenge.......2006-10-31

Not since the release of The Count of Monte Cristo has a reader felt so deeply for an honest man's demise, nor been so thrilled to see his enemies pay the price.

Rewind is written in a wonderfully revealing style, allowing the reader to see the story through each individual's eyes, one by one. As always, the people portrayed in Bruce Kimmel's fictional novels are not just two dimensional characters; they have personalities we grow to care for, detest, and ultimately want to know more about.

Along with a great murder mystery, the reader also gets a special look at what life is like in the recording business, which is always a treat when written in Bruce's vividly descriptive prose.

My favorite part of reading Bruce's mysteries is reading them a second time, once I know the secret ending. Then all the little hints and cleverly worded phrases pop out and I throughly enjoy the book in a whole new way.

When you finish this one, read bruce Kimmel's other books, you will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Murder in the recording industry.......2006-08-21

Here is a novel for those of us who enjoy sweet revenge, who would like to believe that those who have been truly and hideously wronged can occasionally turn the tables and actually see some punishment--in fiction, of course.

In "Rewind," Jonathan Goldman is a seasoned record producer and singer/songwriter of the hit song, "Getting Away With You," whose record company has chosen to part ways. Not content to simply fire him, they are out for blood. Nasty, vicious, vindictive--you name it. They attempt to not just ruin his career, but bankrupt him, as well. The novel has a grit, an immediacy, that I quite like. You're engrossed from page one and stay right there until the end. And a satifying ending it is.

Mr Kimmel demonstrates that he can write a tight novel, pull the reader in, and hold him there until he is done. He writes well and gives us characters which are both believable and interesting. The reader needs no knowledge of the recording industry to enjoy this romp; indeed, one comes away feeling that one has truly been there and seen it first-hand. Highly recommended.

          5 out of 5 stars Whatta Ride!.......2005-11-25

Oh, BOY!! From the giddy-up - and I emphasize "giddy" - this story grabs ya and takes you on the monster roller-coaster, whirling teacups, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and then some. A tight, fast (we're talking white-knuckle fast) blitz of a story, in the multiple-personality first-person. I guessed part of it about halfway through - because of the vicarious thrill of doing in those whose goose I never got to cook... 'Tis said that Revenge is a dish best served cold... Well, for anyone who ever felt majorly WRONGED, and had the tenacity to hold a grudge beyond death, which I suspect is a goodly number of yuz, this gourmet concoction is WAY delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Is The Magic Gone?.......2005-11-13

In Bruce Kimmel's new novel, "Rewind" we are introduced to the dog eat dog industry of the recording business. All the in's and out's of what goes into to recording a single track of music is that we take for granted which arrives on our doorstep on a shiny bright CD for our listening pleasure, is dissected here in this novel.

Not only are we introduced to the methods and workings of creating an album, but we are privy to the goings on behind the scenes, behind the music, and ultimately, behnd the people that hold the money. This novel can easily be a handbook on what not to do when attempting to make it in the world of small record label business.

Without giving away what actually happens in this work of fiction, it's a keen example of what I'm sure a lot of people would like to do when they are faced with something as cruel and vicious as what happens to the main charactor in this novel, Jonathan. His story may seem familiar to any reader that knows the business. Kimmel takes it a step further and gives the reader some satisfaction in taking the matter ...

If you are interested in the recording business or have read Kimmel's other novels, (Writers Block, Bejamine Kritzer, Kritzerland, and Kritzer Time) it's worth taking the time to read "Rewind" as it's a great work of fiction and a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Furious Fun.......2005-10-26

Rewind, the fifth novel by Bruce Kimmel, is a fast and furious romp through the world of music producing, gone wrong. Mr. Kimmel has once again given us a story that is "un-put-downable", filled with details only someone who spent many years in this business could provide. I opened the book for a quick browse of the first chapter and re-emerged three hours later at the end of the last page. The fast pace derives from the interesting style in which this was written. The story is told in the first person, but each part is told from different character's perspective. To say more would give away too much. Do not miss this one, it is a fun ride, just when you think you know what's going on, you find out you don't!

2 out of 5 stars Loved the main character, but eh...........2006-07-12

Honestly, there were some things I liked about this book and some things I really didn't like. First, the good parts. Starting a book with Chapter 28 is very unique, but it can also be a difficult thing to pull off. Also, I really liked Cady. I liked how that she loved music and I loved that she was so shy that everything Lucas said or did made her giggle. She was my favorite character in the book.

I think I would've enjoyed this book more if it were told in flashbacks, instead of end to begining. I found myself going back through previous pages for certain details and it drew me away from the plot of the book. Also, I would've liked Cady to be the only narrator. I didn't like Lucas or Hope, so I was bored reading their chapters. Hope especially angered me throughout the book and I didn't like that nothing was resolved in the end. I had so many questions after I finished. As the person before me mentioned, does Lucas like Cady or Hope more? Nothing gets resolved, the characters don't amount to anything, and I felt as if I was left hanging.

I think this author has potential, though. She is obviously very creative and she's very good with character development, I just think she needs to work on plot points, details, and resolution.

Also, the back of the book says that Cady needs to find out the truth, but I'm not sure she did. I think only the reader did and that disappointed me, as well. Once again, I think the book should've been told from her POV only, because then we would know if she actually learned what she needed to know. I wouldn't recommend buying this book and I don't know if I'll even read it again.

3 out of 5 stars Left me wanting for more.......2006-04-17

I think this book would be better told begining to end, instead of end to begining. I think it would help the story flow better and allow the reader to more easily connect with the charactors. I have to say, that although this was no where near my favorite book, or even in my top twenty,I did think the charactirs in this story were so well developed. It's easy to tell that the author spent a lot time coming up with these vivid charactors. Over all I would reccomed pick this up at the library for quick read, don't waste your money.

          4 out of 5 stars confused.......2006-04-03
