Book Description
This easy-to-understand calculus study aid is ideal for those who are new to the subject. It offers a well-illustrated, step-by-step introduction that moves along at an easy-to-keep-up-with pace. Use it with your textbook or for independent study to improve your comprehension and boost your grades. It features 226 solved and 513 skill-building supplementary problems--more than other study guides. Whether you simply want to feel confident at test time or build a solid foundation in calculus for more advanced math, science, and engineering course, Schaum's Outline of Beginning Calculus is students' first choice. level of Ayres/Mendelson, Calculus, 3/e. This will make up the calculus segments of one-semester liberal arts courses and the various one-semester Calculus courses for business or life sciences. This book will also address weaker students in general freshman calculus and high school advanced placement courses. Theory is restricted to fundamentals of differentiation and integration (single-variable) and the solved problems, with no steps ommitted, include reviews of algebra. This updated edition will continue the excellent sales record of the first edition and will include: problems suitable for graphing calculators and existing problems adapted to involve calculator use; emphasis on aogorithmic aspects of Calculus; Newton's method will be given a separate section, a section various approximation techniques for integration, Simpson's Rule the Midpoint rule; a section that presents the traditional treatment of exponential and logarithmic functions, which method some textbooks have gone back to.

Just the best book for self study and review.......2005-12-31
This book can help an alien to math understand a calculus concept.
Good as supplemental text book, NOT good as primary textbook.......2004-02-14
There are not enough examples to explain everything you would need to know. I've found I had to go to the web or other more basic Calculus books many times to try to solve some of the problems in there. There are better books out there for those of us looking for complete breakdown of the problems and better explanations.
An excellent introduction and review of Calculus .............2001-07-10
I trudge back to this book again and again, being embarassed at having forgotten some basic idea or technique. This is an excellent supplemental text to a formal Calculus textbook like "Calculus " by Stewart. The writing is lucid and ideas are explained with the novice in mind. I find that reading this book first BEFORE getting into a meatier textbook helps me understand the material.
My experience has been that if I do not "do calculus" at least twice a week I forget the techniques (not ideas) almost immediately. Therefore, if you want a review of Calculus this book is a great tool. If you are new to calculus this book will help you understand important concepts like differentiation vs integration. I also found that reading pertinent chapters in Selby's "Geometry and Trigonometry For Calculus" and then reading related material in this book is a tremendous help.
Another strong point is that for us over 50 the font size and book layout is easy on the eye. So whether you are a novice or someone who has not had the chance to use Calculus in a while; or someone "brand new" to Calculus, get this book. An excellent resource for learning and entertainment!!
Very good value for the budget-minded math student.......2000-05-25
Elliott Mendelson does an excellent job of presenting basic calculus concepts in an inexpensive book. His explanations are very clear, and the book is actually fun to use. Perhaps my only criticism is that this book does not use color which often helps to clarify figures of graphs, but black and white figures are to be expected in an outline. If you're interested in a supplement to your text or if you want a book for self-study, I strongly recommend "Beginning Calculus."
Excellent value; good for self-study........1998-02-26
I use this book in a calculus class I teach on America Online. For the price, it is an excellent review of the subject. It covers the same material found in much more expensive texts. There are many exercises for students to do, with answers in the back of the book. It only lacks the full-color graphics that adorn conventional calculus textbooks.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn calculus by self-study. It is also a good supplement to a conventional text used in a class. The best way to learn math is by doing problems, and this book has plenty, including many detailed solutions.

Book Description
"Mr. Patterson is a natural storyteller....Fast moving...A handsome job."
THE NEW YORK TIMES
William Lasko is a self-made millionaire who's got an eye for wealth and influence, the ear of the president, and a talent for using both to get what he wants. Now the Economic Crimes Commission wants the corrupt, untouchable Lasko brought down--and U.S. Attorney Christopher Paget is tapped to take on the job.
To gather enough evidence to nail Lasko without alienating the White House, Paget's got to go by the book. But Lasko makes his own rules. And eliminating enemies is William Lasko's golden one....

ANOTHER WINNER!.......2007-07-12
Good story, well crafted and hard to put down! I'll read ALL his books in the future.
Very Well Written, but Problematic in Some Areas.......2007-02-04
THE LASKO TANGENT is Richard North Patterson's first novel, written in 1978 at the age of twenty-nine. It won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel, and Patterson later wrote two massively successful books featuring the same lead character in the early 1990s.
For a debut, THE LASKO TANGENT is extremely well written. Patterson is clearly a first-rate wordsmith, and you can see his talent virtually leap off the page. My major problem with this novel, however, is that the central character is not particularly likable. He is a young, rather arrogant individual who is hard to care for. Since he is the only fully developed character in the book, this creates a novel without much of a hero.
THE LASKO TANGENT also has remarkably convoluted storyline that focuses on a complex money laundering scheme. Although I ultimately found this plot quite clever, it is rather hard to follow in spots. The hero's job is never clearly defined or explained to the reader. I also found the ending of this novel abrupt and rather unsatisfying.
Ultimately, I recommend this book only for hardcore fans of Patterson. The prose is definitely first-rate, but I felt the characterization and plot were somewhat lacking. If you're new to Patterson, you may want to try his later novels first, such as DEGREE OF GUILT.
CRISP BUT NOT TOTALLY SATISFYING.......2003-03-25
This is Patterson's first book, and in his introduction he offers an explanation for its inception. Christopher Paget appears in two later novels, "Degree of Guilt" and "Eyes of a Child" which are far superior novels than this one. Be warned, though---if you read "Degree of Guilt" first you'll pretty much know what happens in this book. Paget is a little overbearing and cynical in this one and not as likeable in his mature years. The pace is pretty effective, and the villains are appropriately nasty. I found the ending a tad bit too brisk; it just seemed to end.
RECOMMENDED IN ORDER TO ENJOY THE BETTER SEQUELS.
Early Patterson Pretty Smokin'.......2002-07-11
This is the first of the "Paget Trilogy" and is a pretty decent book. Let's remember Patterson was 29 when he wrote this back in 1979. I guess that could explain the dope references, which didn't bother me at all. A flawed main protagonist??? Oh my God, The HORROR!!! Easy read that will set you up for the much better "Degree of Guilt".
Audio Version Lacks Sophistication.......2000-08-08
My wife and I bought this tape for something to listen to while traveling cross country in the car. Though it's abridged, we felt the author's endorsement would ensure a quality presentation -- big mistake.
First of all, Ken Howard's voice offered little range and capability in offering distinctions between the various characters, and he clearly sounds nothing like a 29-year old protagonist. The novel's dialogue doesn't help on this last point, however, as I had difficulty being convinced that Paget could be both this jaded and self-assured at such a young age.
Most of the characters were two-dimensional sterotypes with limited depth -- especially the women, of which there were too few. These guys are supposed to be big corporate and government hardball players, and yet get flustered everytime Paget talks tough (Ohhh, I'm sooo scared of you). There also appears to be virtually no sensory information in the narrative beyond a visual context -- we know almost nothing about any of the character's personalities or their appearance and mannerisms throughout the book. This applies to descriptions and sensations of the locales as well. I suppose this could have been what was cut as part of the abridged version.
The plot stalls for about half of the book, but picks up quickly at the end, but Paget's failure in attempting to analyze and interpret his first big clue (a written note) is a big investigative oversight right from the start.
Very disappointing.
Book Description
In order to construct continuous climbing-turn handrail sections for a staircase, the basic elements of tangent handrailing must be understood. This guide to building custom staircases, including elliptical stairs and continuous incline stairs, explains the tangent principle for the advanced woodworker. Covering everything from locating risers in a curved stairway to the installation of balusters, this simple method enables the craftsperson to make distinctive, personalized stair and handrail designs that are not available from stock staircase companies.

Custom Stairbuilding and Tangent Handrailing.......2007-08-28
My husband has been in the carpentry trade for over forty-five years and spiral stairs has been one of his specialities. He reviewed the book and has found several items of real interest after all these years to assist him in the building of stairs.
Not an "eleventh hour" how-to.......2006-06-26
honestly, if you are halfway through a curved handrail at sort of a sticky point and think "I'll order this book, it looks like it might help", well, you are probably wrong.
Lots of info, like a lot of the other stair books, but not put together in a way that will be useful in the short term. I'd say it's more like a text book. Also the term "Simplified" in the title...I guess if you are Stephen Hawking, then perhaps. But why would Stephen Hawkings want a book about building stairs?
A lot to get your head around, not going to help you out of a bind, unless your bind is something like "how do I find the vertex locations of a rake-to-level section"
Impossible to follow.......2006-02-24
I bought this book looking for something to help me design a simple staircase. After browsing this archaic reference text for about 5 minutes I determined it would of no practical value to 99.99% of anyone not already an expert. I threw it in the trash.
The really useful book out there.......2003-09-13
This is the only book available that one can actually use to learn tangent handrailing, and classical stair design. This is an advanced text for the architectural woodworker with some grounding in stairbuilding. If this describes your situation, buy the book, glue up some practice blanks out of construction lumber, and begin your exploration of a fascinating craft. Mowatt is a great conversation piece on the bookshelf, but the only reason I know what he's talking about is owed to the time I spent with DiChristina's book. My copy is somewhat beaten-up due to the time it has spent on the workbench. I am grateful to the author for the clearest and best organized book on this subject.
A Little Misleading.......2002-11-21
The title and even the example pages that are viewable are very misleading to the actual content of the book. I did not pay close enough attention to the chaper/page breakdown. Only a third of the book has anything to do with the construction of the stairs, and the rest is covering handrail design construction. The information in the first two sections did not provide me with any usable info on how to build a staircase. If you are building a very complex railing system, this may be a good purchase, otherwise, save your money.
Book Description
Three provocative thrillers from the master. Hailed by Mario Puzo as "brilliant and horrifying," The Tomorrow File brims with diabolical plot twists. Peter Tangent propels The Tangent Objective and The Tangent Factor-shocking stories of corporate secrets, violent passions, greed, and honor. Rolling Stone writes: "It's hard to tell if Sanders or his hero (Peter Tangent) is more ruthless. But both are out for adventure ...and both deliver!"
Product Description
The study of the 3 conics : ellipses, hyperbolas and parabolas is a fascinating topic of analytic geometry. This book breaks a long tradition practiced in most classical math text books in which the conics discussed are confined to a single axis-aligned orientation and a single reference point, the origin. Using a Computer Algebraic System, Maple®, complete sets of formulas are developed for conics with arbitrary alignment and positioning. The treatment of the conics proceeds in a logical fashion from the derivation of the 7 position independent parameters, followed by the generation of up to 36 positional parameters, and finally to the computation of the A..F coefficients of the conic polynomials. Fundamental and compound transformations of the conics are described and relevant formulas are generated using surprisingly simple techniques. Two extensions go beyond the basic conics treatment. First, tangent conditions between lines and conics and between two conics are stated and computed enabling the generation of a rich set of corresponding formulas. Now, inscribing conics of any alignment or position into triangles and quadrilaterals becomes possible. Second, a set of 54 parameters of conics placed in the 3-D coordinate system are generated, and the 3-D display of the corresponding conics is described step-by-step.
Over 50 challenging examples are provided with detailed explanations and illustrations. These examples include positioning, orientation, sizing, shaping, transformation, parameterization of the conic, and the construction of conics subject to various tangent and proximity constraints. In addition conics through 3, 4 and 5 points are demonstrated.
An invaluable resource to the practitioner, the TOOLBOX, spans over 100 pages and contains hundreds of well organized formulas generated and used throughout the main text. All formulas and their generating algorithms are available in electronic form upon request.

Best analyation of Jimmy Page's music. .......2007-06-16
This book is THE go to book to learn about jimmy's mindset and his music. It is not about his lifestyle, but rather about his music and his inspirations. Definitely worth the price.
Jimmy Page: Tangents Within A Framework.......2004-09-06
The previous reviewer probably didn't understand the title, that's all. This book is fascinating! It's about the music of Jimmy Page...where he got his ideas from and how he put it all together. The book also lets the reader learn about the tangents he would go off on during concerts but he always kept it within the framework of the song he was playing. He and Led Zeppelin were best known for their improvisational skills on stage. This book tells it all and has a ton of great pictures in it!! Well worth the price of admission on this book!!

it probably went out of print because of the stupid title!
