The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Ernest L. Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered offers a new paradigm that recognizes the full range of scholarly activity by college and university faculty and questions the existence of a reward system that pushed faculty toward research and publication and away from teaching.

Scholarship Reconsidered-A mandate for new scholars.......2006-03-23
This text offered insights for anyone, currently involved in, or considering the academic profession. The authors do a wonderful job in decribing the current expectations of academia at the period this text was constructed. Unfortunately, the book does paint the picture many would expect. It is unfortunate that higher education may have strayed from the teaching mission whether intentionally or indirectly but the authors offer alternatives as to how to approach the situation and that it may not be as polarized as it may appear.
It would be insightful to see this study updated to reflect the current situation.

Easy, Effective Read.......2006-03-17
Boyer gives concrete advice for anyone that wishes to enter the world of academia or who is already in the academy that wants to refocus their efforts for maximum results. The book is easy to read and gives great food for thought.
a leader of educators.......2002-12-02
Dr.Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate is one of the most famouse works about American education. Two years ago I read the book in China.By the way, I'm a Chinese graduate. And I think it is a usful book for those who are intersted in Ameican higer education.
An age-old problem without solution.......2001-08-26
I'd have given the book a higher rating if the author can come up with a clear and appropriate solution to the problem. Imbalance between teaching and research in higher education institutions is not a new issue. There is little doubt that almost everyone can feel the pain: from administrators and faculty to students and parents. The problem is crystal clear, but it persists because we don't know or don't have the will to fix it. Let's face the reality: Universities build their reputation around research grants and publications and Nobel Prizes. Parents fight to get their children into these high profile universities. Students who graduate from these universities have a better chance to land a good job. In the process the "reputation" of these universities is further intensified. It's a vicious cycle not the administrators or the faculty alone can break. No one will say no to good teaching. The real problem is that reward for good teaching is less tangible, effects of good teaching are less immediate. It may take years before students appreciate good teaching, some time long after they've moved on. It may take generations before the society feels the effects of good teaching. Education is a society's long term investment. In a modern age where we ask for immediate recognition and fame, we lack the will to pursue a distant but more satisfying goal. All these problems cannot and should not be tackled by the administrators & faculty alone, as the book seems to suggest. These problems call on all of us to search deep in our soul what it really takes to move the society forward.
A must read for all higher education faculty.......1999-04-29
Ernest Boyer has presented a very thoughtful conception of the changing demands placed upon those faculty who work in higher education. Recognizing the triad which governs the "tenurability" of faculty, Boyer addresses the need to rethink what higher education is about and how the "professoriate" needs to re-examine and re-prioritze what is important--teaching! He argues eloquently for making teaching the object of research and research a basis for what is taught. The book should be required reading for all faculty and administrators who work in higher education and constantly struggle with tenure and promotion criteria. He presents a very different perspective on what is important, not only to the professors, but more importantly to the students and ultimately to society. His straight forward style and clear message makes the reading of the book a pleasure and his message can serve as a catalyst for serious discussion about what is important activity for professors to engage in as "educators" of our future leaders, scientists, business persons, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and other members of society.

Must have for if you purchase the Franklin Planner.......2007-06-06
A litle background
I used the paper based Franklin Planner about a decade ago and did a career shift to where I was using company software for all my contact work along with an appointment calendar. B/c of that - I scrapped the Planner and used a palm pilot for all my phone numbers. At the time - I had taken the full day live course for a few hundred bucks and found it invaluable in understanding "how to" use the nuts and bolts of priorities / daily lists / sharpen saw features / etc.
Things changed professionally for me - and I wanted to revisit the Planner to see if it would be valuable to me again today. I purchased some filler pages for my old planner binder and tried to get back in the swing of things and see if the Planner would be useful to me now. I didn't want to spend the money on "the live course" again - but wanted to get refreshed. I read a few Covey books I had in my personal library - but they were more or less conceptual and didn't really go through the use of his planner beyond generalitites. I found out that this new and updated program might fill in the gaps and the price was right so I tried it.
***** I AM VERY HAPPY AUDIO PROGRAAM *****. So far, I've listened to the first 3 disks and they are pretty much a recording of a live trainer giving their seminars. It does a very thorough job of walking you through the areas of evaluating and writing your guiding p;rinciples / how to effectively plan weekly and daily with a system like this / how to select and prioritize tasks for each day ( things like don't ever schedule more than 65 % of yoru day in daily tasks ) - as well as documenting and note retreival.
The focus of the seminar CD's is on a paper based planner - but he gives enough theory to integrate paper and electronic if you're interested in that.
I just got this program and have listened to the first 3 disks ( live seminar recording ). There is a workbook and CD - Rom along with it that I have not used - it's worth adding - I'll update my review.
In my opinion - this is pretty close to the same content that you'll get out of a seminar - and if want to learn the Franklin Planner system - this program OR - the seminar is "A MUST". There is an online tutorial of the basics on Franklin Covey site - but the content in Seminar and / or this program is really needed to really use it effectively.
Huge Benefit if you find your day slipping away...........2007-04-16
When I became responsible for managing 50 people a few years back, I had finally hit a wall. I could no longer knock out the day to day tasks and still focus on the long-term needs of my division. I went into a FC store and bought a planner. Luckily for me the sales person strongly recommend I pick up this tape also. A planner is great but this book really helped me use my planner effectively and do more then knock out the days tasks. Another side benefit, it improved my relationship with my wife, there is quite abit about work/life balance in this CD and taught me to take 5-10 minutes and focus on my wife along with work.
Focus: Achieving Your Highest Priorities.......2006-08-30
Good content, helps to have a background in the Franklin Covey system.
Extremely Helpful!.......2005-06-10
This audio series has been extremely helpful to me in getting a better understanding of Covey's principles regarding time management and prioritization. After reading his book "First Things First," I felt I needed an additional resource to grasp fully the principles he was presenting. This audio series accomplished that very situation.
For the price, this CD series is an excellent bargain. I recommend it highly for anyone wanting to get a basic understanding of Covey's life-changing techniques.
Great Overview of Franklin Covey Principles.......2004-01-26
During my initial first few minutes of listening I realized that Stephen Covey wasn't the main speaker on this tape (he narrates some sections). Suddenly I thought maybe the quality would be mediocre. That this would be some cranked out product just to make a buck. I was wrong. I listened to all 3 CD's (the 4th is a computer demo) and enjoyed the presentation highly.
Steve Jones is the person who gives presentation. I believe it is a recorded live process. What I liked about this alot is it covered all of the Franklin Covey time management principles in a very focussed manner (hence the title...??).
This CD series serves as an excellent refresher or introduction to the principles of managing your time. They introduce the time quadrants and explain in pretty good detail how to use paper, PDA or computer planners to manage your time. The sessions never bog down in any one area and they move from topic to topic at just about the right pace.
Obviously this CD set has some ties to the services and courses offered by Franklin Covey. They'd love it if you registered for the full course or bought a $200 planner/binder. However the course on tape/CD will standalone quite well. The speaker is clear and has a good delivery. I enjoyed this and found the time passed quickly (which doesn't always happen) as I was listening. Buy this - you won't be sorry!
Book Description
Tony Dungy's words and example have intrigued millions of people, particularly following his victory in Super Bowl XLI, the first for an African American coach. How is it possible for a coach--especially a football coach--to win the respect of his players and lead them to the Super Bowl without the screaming histrionics, the profanities, the demand that the sport come before anything else? How is it possible for anyone to be successful without compromising faith and family? In this inspiring and reflective memoir, Coach Dungy tells the story of a life lived for God and family--and challenges us all to redefine our ideas of what it means to succeed. Includes a foreword by Denzel Washington and a 16-page color photo insert.

Insight.......2007-10-11
This book gives a look at the who and the how of a person.
I like people who don't let life control them.
They control their life by looking beyond what is, to what isn't seen but felt.
A Life changing book!.......2007-10-10

Quiet Strength.......2007-10-10
This was an excellent book. It showed how ones spiritual beliefs can guide you through our daily lives both in good and and bad.
It gave great insight to how and why the Indianapolis Colts football team is managed and what their priorities are in regard to player selection and weekly stradagy.
And finally, Tony presents his philosophy on how trying to do the "right thing" in all situations leaves you with few regrets.

Book Description
No reform effort in American higher education in the last twenty years has been more important than the attempt to enlarge the dominant understanding of the scholarly work of facult--what counts as scholarship. Faculty Priorities Reconsidered assesses the impact of this widespread initiative to realign the priorities of the American professoriate with the essential missions of the nation's colleges and universities: to redefine faculty roles and restructure reward systems.
Faculty Priorities Reconsidered traces the history of the movement to redefine scholarship: examining the impact of the 1990 landmark report Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate from The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the decade-long work of the American Association for Higher Education's Forum on Faculty Roles and Rewards that initiated and sustained much of the work reported on here. The struggles to move beyond narrow definitions of research, to distinguish between scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching while acknowledging the importance of both, to encourage faculty engagement in meeting the scholarly needs of the larger civic community, and to recognize the importance of academic synthesis and integration--all elements of a broader understanding of scholarship--are addressed in this book.

Book Description
This book is the result of five years' exhaustive work by the BNHS. The data, which form the core of the book, have been collected by more than 1,000 people: many hundreds of professiona and amateur ornithologists, birdwatchers, conservationists, forest officials, and others interested in
birds.
It is the most detailed publication ever produced on the subject of birds or conservation and it uncovers, analyzes and assesses all of the evidence, presenting it together with all the sources. The study has given a detailed analysis of sites that have been identified for bird conservation in India
on the basis of globally accepted criteria. Each bird area is introduced with maps, analysis, avifauna section with tables of threatened species present, and a brief description of threatened birds, which have important habitats in the relevant states.
The study shows that out of 465 important birds in India, 191 wildlife sanctuaries have been idenfitied as IBAs, 52 are national parks, 23 are tiger reserves, while 198 are not officially protected.

Good Quick Start for the Java Collections Framework.......2005-11-12
As an experienced programmer new to Java, I was looking for a quick introduction to the Java Collections Framework, the set of classes and interfaces for working with collections of objects. In essence, the Collections Framework gives the Java programmer a predefined set of data structures including lists, hash tables, stacks, and sets. This book fell into a nice middle ground for me. I already knew about data structures so I was not looking for a textbook. But I wanted something more than a quick reference guide, something with some examples and explanatory text. I found that "Data Structures with Java" fit my needs. As other reviewers have noted, it does contain more typos than it should. Also, I recommend obtaining a copy from your local library, I don't feel that it is a "keeper".
good intention, bad implementation.......2005-01-15
It is true, as other reader attests, that the book has many an error. However, what I don't like about the book is that the author uses the Java API to illustrate all his examples. Yes, this might be easier than to come up with a new implementation, but, is definitely not a good learning tool. I want to know what's behind each implementation so that I can abstract it in my head and apply it to other examples and problems. But for example, how is,
int[] blah = new int(50);
Array.asList(blah)l
going to teach me about turning an array into a linear list or even a string? Yeah Java has the facilities, but it's all behind the fog (API).
One other issue I have is that the author spends way too much time testing the Java API (about two chapters). And further, even as the book progresses, he keeps calling Java's internal, built-in methods and interface.
It's not a bad book for the price, but don't buy it as a substitute for a text book or even a main aid book.
Get 4th Edition.......2001-10-19
This is the first edition, and there seem to be lot of errors. The author's web site states that there is a 4th edition available. I'd wait for that one.

It includes advanced mathematical theory and diverse applications. Fundamentals of Decision Making has all the latest theoretical developments in the AHP and new theoretical material not published elsewhere. We consider this book to be the replacement for the original book on the subject, The Analytic Hierarchy Process.

The totally new paradigm of decision support and analysis.......2000-04-04
Dr. Saaty has obtained a really great work. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is powerful in decision analysis to choose the best choices. The book describes in a detailed way all mathematic theory involved in his AHP method, demostrating that the best methods and consequently all techniques developed after method not necessary imply the most complicated theories and analysis. AHP is simple, easy to use, and its implications in the use of the state of the art inside the organizations give as result the best decision support tool: computer-aided decision-making and analysis (Expert-Choice and AliahTHINK)
