What an Adventure !.......2007-09-21
This is an appealing book on many levels. 19th century sea adventure, heroes, tradegies, great survival stories, heart stopping excitement, 20th century high tech recovery adventures, interlopers and bottom feeding lawyers and insurance companies, it's got it all. Why 4 stars rather than 5 ? I found it a tad long after they found the boat and began that part of the story. But, that is a small point. Well worth the reader's time.

Ship of Gold is a good story with excellent details about the recovery of the gold.
In my next recovery book I will look for more diving experience. The ROV's do not have the same adventure value as the human diving experience we have on the North Sea but then again the North Sea is maximum 40 meters deep. We don't need ROV's at these depths.
I liked the sonar specialist story and the systematical scanning of the area's with the best values in the probability matrix.

This is by far the best book ever. I have purchased more copies then I can count and I have given it to all of my family members and most of my friends. All of them loved it. Even my mom told it was one of the best books she had ever read. Being she reads a book every two weeks that's a pretty good compliment.
This is a short book, but it takes a long time to read. It's not that it's a hard read; it's just that it's so good you will take your time to read it. Almost like savoring a great wine.
I don't recommend many books, but this one should be on the top of your reading pile. Once you read it you will understand why and I'm willing to bet you will recommend it to all of your friends.
Good modern day treasure hunt.......2007-07-04
I liked the way the author took the reader back and forth from the past to the present. It was interesting to see how much planning and inguenuity it took to accomplish the recovery of the gold. Once the treasure was found, I have to admit to having a mild case of 'gold fever' due to the vivid descriptions provided by G. Kinder. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 is because of the Tommy (the technical mastermind of the recovery) praising!!!! Alright already, he certainly must walk on water, and if he doesn't, he'll surely invent a way to. Inspite of the Tommy factor, this is a good book.

When the Central America sank in 1857 she took 21 tons of gold and more than 400 souls to the bottom of the sea, including one of my ancestors. Kinder's incredible book weaves the tale of the shipwreck together with the story of the thrilling recovery more than 130 years later.
Ship of Gold is a fantastic book from historic and scientific perspectives. If you read this book, you will gain new insights about the Gold Rush and 19th-century sea travel; better yet, you will be amazed by the technological and biological advancements which were a direct consequence of Tommy Thompson's recovery.
I read Ship of Gold to fill in the details of an old family legend. I was pleased to discover a truly amazing work of nonfiction.

What a great book to begin understanding the life of pre-retirement and after retirement. This book does a wonderful job of being objective to the many options available. There is no clear cut answer to growing old and decisions should be made once the options are understood. This was fun and enjoyable to read!

"The quest for freedom with a small f," writes John Litweiler, "appears at the very beginning of jazz and reappears at every growing point in the music's history." But Litweiler's book is about the upper-case variety of freedom--the Free jazz pioneered in the late 1950s by the likes of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, and Eric Dolphy. The author, who has also written a fine biography of Coleman, traces the rise and multiple ramifications of this firebreathing music. His judgements have held up superbly since the book's original 1985 publication, and his thumbnail portraits and fine-tuned analyses make this an essential volume.

Bad Jazz Journalism.......2002-08-31
Litweiler has been a jazz critic for many years and has written a fine book about Ornette Coleman. But this book is really a disappointment. A good scholarly book about the free jazz movement is long overdue, at least in this country, but Litweiler isn't the person to do it. This book reads more like the opinions of a fan rather than thoughtful and considered ideas.
Litweiler often makes statements of opinions and masquerades them as fact. And he For example, he castigates Keith Jarrett mercilessly, questioning Jarrett's originality on spurious grounds. He makes statements to the effect that what Jarrett does is the same as any college music student does when they sit in a practice room and improvise in the style of Bach or Chopin. I have news for him, I never heard anyone do this in any of the music schools that I attended. Classical musicians never improvise, no matter how good it would be for them to learn. So, far from being something that "every student does" this is a pretty rare skill.
And again, Litweiler castigates Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders for interest in popular music and tonal music respectively. In this, Litweiler shows his own bias, which is definately for the New York Energy school as opposed to the more modal school of Sanders, or the interest that Ra had in situating himself within the jazz canon.
I think the worst thing, though, is that Litweiler completely misses the spiritual side of the music. Free jazz is mostly a spiritual thing for the performers, and for the open listener. Ascension wasn't a raw expression of anger, it was a "rasing of the spirits" in the old Yoruba sense. Litweiler's interest in so much in the "advanced" ideas of free jazz that he misses the point.
A better introduction to this music might be Eberhardt Jost's classic, Free Jazz. It is much more rational and scholarly, though like this book, it's a bit out of date. David Such also wrote a wonderful book on the subject, Avante-Gard Music and Musicians. Such is both an ethnomusicologist and an avant-garde performer, and knows what he's talking about from the inside.
A Decent Book; Now Out-Dated. Perhaps an Introduction........2001-11-22
Litweiler's "Freedom Principle" is a pretty good book if you know nothing about "free jazz" (a terrible label, by the way) and want to learn about the dominant performers in the music. He provides some interesting commentary on Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, AACM members, and the European performers. Considering when the book was published, it is somewhat out-dated, since many of the artists he mentions (that are still living, of course) have gone on to develop their creativity far beyond the point where Litweiler begins and ends his analysis of it.
Litweiler also develops some perspectives that seem rather off to me. For example, he says that "Among the great jazz musicians, Ayler's emotional range may be the most limited" (p.151). Ayler's music, in my opinion, is quite the opposite. When discussing Miles Davis' fusion period, he states "the content of his music declined to a search for the new idea or effect, and innovation became valueless" (p.224). Considering how many artists have been inspired by Miles' late 60s-mid 70s period (e.g., there have been a flood of reissues documenting this period of his career, and new people are discovering and loving his music from this period every day), this statement seems to be a little too bold, if not totally erroneous. Miles made the most challenging and innovative fusion music of the 70s, and his creativity inspired and influenced not only jazz musicians of the period but also funk and rock musicians. The textures he explored on those early 70s albums are as artful and challenging as anything before or since. He also claims that Sun Ra's love for popular music is a weakness: "Sun Ra's most impenetrable music, as composer and improviser, has been influenced by the most flabby kinds of popular musics. He is the only jazz musician who ever recorded a version of 'Holiday for Strings'" (p.143). Maybe it is just me, but I find the implied tone of the last sentence a little insulting to Sun Ra and his magnificent legacy. Such commentary smacks of elitist arrogance.
This aside, I must say that Litweiler's book about Ornette Coleman is excellent. Compared with "The Freedom Principle," it is like day and night--I almost wonder if they were written by the same person.
Good, if occasionally didactic.......2001-01-14
Freedom Principle definitely suffers from the author's avocation as music critic--the prose is choppy, and the big thematic ideas occasionally get lost in the minutiae. Chapter 1 "Steps in Search of Freedom" is especially desultory and poorly focused. The chapters on individual players are better.
That said, the book is an excellent introduction to the free jazz movement, and covers the major players well, with very insightful discussions of individual works and solos.
Litweiler is at his worst when his own opinions come blazing through; he loves free jazz and despises rock. It's an opinion shared by others, to be sure, but he belabors his point, and, in the final chapters, all but bludgeons his reader with it. It's a fairly ironic twist in a book dedicated to the unbridled freedom of musical expression.

An excellent summary of the formative years of America's neglected music. Covers important figures intelligently and succinctly. Best used as an introduction to the field, from which you can move on to biographies of individuals.
An excellent overview of the subject.......1998-09-24
This is book is an excellent overview of the subject. That said, most of the book is dedicated to the major figures (Coltrane, Davis, Coleman, Sun Ra, Mingus, etc.) and there are other books available dedicated to these subjects with more detail. But if you haven't read the critical biographies on the major figures, this is a good place to start to learn about jazz during 1958-1975, and there are interesting sections on some less well known musicians who you can't read about anywhere else.

Michael Urban chronicles the advent of blues music in Russia and explores the significance of the genre in the turbulent, postcommunist society. Russians, he explains, have taken a music originating in the "low" culture of the American South and transformed it into an object of "high" culture, fashioning a social identity that distinguishes blues adherents from both the discredited Soviet past and the vulgar consumerism associated with the country's Westernization. Based on more than forty interviews with blues musicians and fans, nightclub managers, and others, Russia Gets the Blues reveals the fascinating history of blues in Russia, from the initial mimicry of British blues-rock to the recent emergence of a specifically "Russian blues." The gradual mastering of the idiom in Russia has been conditioned by the culture of the country's intelligentsia, a fact explaining why, on one hand, bliuzmeny feel compelled to proselytize on behalf of the music, to share with others this treasure of "world culture," while, on the other, they perform blues almost exclusively in English—which almost no one understands—and condemn any and all efforts to make the music commercially successful.

5th Grade Class Review.......2007-09-17
We read Chasing Vermeer over the summer and here are some of our thoughts. We liked the book because it is a mystery with a good plot. Our eyes flew across the page like scurrying squirrels. The story has two kids who worked on solving the problem. The mystery really made you think, we even had to use math skills. Plus, the novel had really good art work.
However, the beginning of Chasing Vermeer is a little tough to follow and also very confusing. Another thing that we did not like was you had to figure out the codes. A silly complaint from of the class is that blue M&Ms are used instead of yellow because yellow M&Ms taste better!
In conclusion, the majority of the class would recommend this book to a friend. We enjoyed this book because we solved the mystery. We hope you read this book!!
Slow and Convoluted.......2007-08-08
The idea of the book was interesting, however the story progressed slowly-often repeating the same ideas. It was predictable all the way through. My sons ages 8 and 10 were bored by this story and wanted to stop reading it. I encouraged them to finish it because of the great reviews-I kept thinking it would get better but the story never did. There are more interesting mysteries out there. Not sure why this one received such high credits.
Excellent mystery.......2007-06-18
This novel is an engaging mystery that will hold students' interest from beginning to end. The story's main characters are two sixth grade students who don't quite fit in with their classmates. They become the best of friends through a series of coincidences and a common love of the unknown. They will easily connect students to the story, because they have common sixth grade problems. Their involvement with solving a mystery also will intrigue students. The story presents some information on Vermeer, and may inspire further research on this and other artists. It also presents a new way of thinking to students. Instead of always accepting what is obvious, the characters in the novel question and think on their own.
Mysteries, Friendship, and Art.......2007-06-17
This realistic contemporary fiction mystery book, written on a 5.4 reading level, is an engaging novel for middle school students to read and enjoy, and to use to develop deductive thinking skills. The continued emphasis on looking at familiar things differently, at the nature of coincidences, and piecing together details to make a whole, and then repositioning them to make new wholes, is thought-provoking and extremely well written. The author chose to write this novel using the third person point of view, which helps the reader attempt to solve the mystery by providing clues not known to the two protagonists, Petra and Calder. The illustrations are both an integral part of the mystery and a mystery on their own. The illustrator, Brett Helquist, who is also the illustrator for the Lemony Snicket books, has hidden a secret message in his drawings related to the pentominoes' code in the book. In addition, Helquist has sketched several of the Vermeer paintings so that readers can visualize them as they are mentioned, and done important, clue providing, drawings of the settings and the characters. The book ends with bibliographic information and interviews about both Blue Balliett and Brett Helquist for readers who are not willing to give this book up, and an excerpt from the sequel, The Wright 3. Young adults, and older adults, will enjoy this book.

I am really enjoying Chasing Vermeer. I can't put it down. The story plot is really cool and it is so amazing how the characters unravel what is happening!I would totally recommend this book to kids who are interested in solving puzzles!

I have to smile when reading these other reviews that say this book was one of their favorites as a child. It also was mine. I've read so many books, that most times the memory of the details within them grow dim, but not with "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I can still picture the breathtaking beauty of the island where Karana spent her growing years. I still remember her joys and trials of living alone for so long, after everyone had left. Her ingenuity and strength still amazes me. I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can enjoy this Newberry book with them. It's definitely one in a million.

When I was on vacation at Martha's Vinyard I went to the book store and bought Island Of The Blue Dolphins for myself and I loved it!! I love it so much because of it's beautiful discriptions and details that I can picture in my mind. This book is beautifully written and has wonderful detail of natural survival of hunting, and making friends (Rontu and Rontu-Aru and the English girl Tutok, the fox and Won-a-nee the otter). How many wonderful and beautiful adventures of exciting survival can one indian girl have? I am 10 years old and recommend this book to whoever loves reading and is a fan of detail and beauty!!!!!!!!

As a collector of the entire series, no one awaited this book more than I. I feel let down. Of the 13 stories, (and it's only 318 pages, not 352), seven are fiction. These were not well chosen: selections from Treasure Island and Moby Dick are not even set at sea, but are the land-based openings of the books. The non-fiction does not live up to the billing of the editorial reviews that preceded it on this page. There is not much shipwreck or survivial: several are more like philosophical essays as opposed to stories with an edge. The story on diving the Andrea Doria is perhaps the best in the book, but many of us will have seen it elsewhere, as it is recent. Why a fictional account of the Titanic and not a true one? For a book on treasure, why nothing of Mel Fisher and the Atocha? If you want sea adventure, the earlier book in the series, Rough Water, delivers a bigger punch. This volume, regratably, is one that you can put down between stories.
More adrenaline, please.......2001-06-04
As a passive individual, I live through the words and experiences of first hand authors for my adventure. This narrative simply scratches the surface of those before it. "Ship of Gold", "The Fatal North" and "Abandon Ship!" come to mind immediately as adrenaline rush examples. Any of the several publications on "The Endurance" far exceed the expectations of "Deep Blue". The human spirit has greater tales to tell.
