Book Description

In the Nevada desert, the high-tech future of warfare is being conceived and constructed at a top-secret military facility called Dreamland Strike Zone.

An Asian war that would have escalated into a nuclear nightmare has been halted, thanks to the raw courage, unparalleled skill, and total commitment of the Dreamland force. But an analysis of radar data has revealed the presence of an unknown super-weapon in the area: a robot warplane with terrifying capabilities, dubbed the "ghost clone." Though strikingly similar to Dreamland's own U/MF Flighthawk, no one knows where this fearsome instrument of destruction originated, but a rogue nation possessing a squadron of them could wreak unimaginable havoc on an unsuspecting free world. Now nothing less than a brazen, brilliantly conceived deception will lure the ghost clone out of hiding—and only a daring strike on enemy soil can avert a tomorrow too terrible to consider . . . if it isn't already too late.

5 out of 5 stars Strike Zone Revisited.......2007-05-28

When I saw the paperback I checked my library which holds all of Dale Brown's work and I did not find it, so I bought it. As I read the book I soon relized I had read it before. I still read the book (again) and once more enjoyed it. If you like Dale Brown, Strike Zone is up to his normal standard. The theme is the tension between Taiwan and mainland China and the desire by some to start a war between China and the USA, which would leave China in a weakend or defeated state. China is not able to take Taiwan by force, especially with USA backing. Taiwan is not strong enough to take China in open warfare, but if the right people had the funding, and some nukes, and the right delivery system, and China were beat down by a war with the USA, that could kill a lot of people and upset the balance of power and bring down China. Of course, Dreamland gets the task of finding out what is going on, and then stopping it. It is no easy task for Dreamland and it is not without cost, but of course Dreamland saves the world again.

My only disappointment is that I can't find my original copy of Strike Zone, which is most likely a hard cover book.

5 out of 5 stars Brown and DeFelice have done it again.......2005-04-21

Dale Brown and Jim DeFelice did it again with Dreamland: Strike Zone. This is an excellent read for those of you out there that are Dale Brown fans. The continuation of the storyline along with it being an independent novel makes it a great all around book for any reader. Because of the novels independence, someone that hasn't read any of the books in the Dreamland series will be able to understand and follow the storyline that has been laid out. This series and others by Dale Brown was what made me interested in the war/technology/current event novels. Since then I have become hooked to them.
What I liked the most about this novel is the reality factor that exists and the possibly that there really could be a "Dreamland." The closest known thing to Dreamland is Area 51. I like books like this that make you think about the world around you and what things are happening. Brown likes to use real world events or events and technology. I think that because is a former captain in the United States Air Force this allows him to write books like this. He already has knowledge of aircraft and the general way that the president can give orders to the four braches of the military so for him to write novels about it and to make it interesting for the reader would be easier for him than to write a romance novel.
The characters I think go through an interesting evolution. With what happened to Zen's wife, I don't think that I could have predicted that even at the end of the last novel in the Dreamland series. I also like how the love story that is there between Colonel Bastian and Jennifer Gleason doesn't get in the way of the over all "mission"/ storyline.

4 out of 5 stars Another great reader.......2004-03-18

Although I have never been a fan of the double author book idea, Dale and Jim seem to have a good thing going here. Strike Zone continues the main characters as they continue to provide the President with options without an all out war. The story opens up slower than the other novels in this series, but as always, the action scenes are fantastic. As a first reader, this one would hold it's own, and if you have the others in the series, it's a MUST HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars SUSPENSE FILLED LISTENING.......2004-02-02

Dale Brown, popular author who has penned fourteen New York times bestsellers, is a former Air Force bombardier. He's an ace pilot as well as a first-rate author. Teaming with Jim DeFelice the pair offer a suspenseful high-tech military thriller.

A dynamite performance by JK Simmons makes sparks fly from the opening lines of this action packed tale.

Far out in the Nevada dessert some of the best minds are focused on warfare in the future. Dreamland force has had their hands more than full in stopping an Asian war that could have been a nuclear holocaust destroying the world as we now know it.

However, an even greater challenge is soon to arrive - radar detection shows there is a major threat nearby. It's a robot warplane capable of unheard of destruction. The "ghost clone" as it is called has no known origin but more than one of them could turn our world into a fiery inferno.

How can this warplane be found and stopped?

A complexly devised plot makes for nonstop listening.

5 out of 5 stars Early Next Generation Work by Peter David ..........2004-04-15

Peter David's Strike Zone is another early Next Generation novel that hits the mark. It's about a diplomatic mission gone wrong between the Kreel and the Klingons. In this one the Klingon representative is very short and diminutive; in contrast to his power on his home world. Worf has a brief romance with his daughter and I have to wonder; was this book published before his romance with the Romulan/Klingon woman who had his son Alexander?

The Kreel make the Klingons sound prestigious in comparison. The only thing the Kreel would like to do is assassinate the Klingon diplomat and his honor guard.

The B plot in this one is where Wesley Crusher is attempting to find a cure to a fatal disease. A friend aboard the Enterprise of his is stricken and it appears he may be manipulating the crew members with physic powers to find a cure.

I remember reading this one close to fifteen years ago and it still is a good novel you can pick up again for a second time. That's the good thing about Peter David's books..they are to read at least twice.

The thing I noticed with all the book rebooting of all the book series. Data is gone. At least as a member of the Enterprise crew for a long time or until the next film. Riker will be captain of the Titian with Troi possibly at his side. All the good and interesting characters from Next Gen are going to other places and the crew isn't going to be the same again. I'd like to see some real character development with first officer Madden. It's was revealed in the DVD edition of "Nemesis" that he's a bit different from Riker. How much so we'll have to see in the new book series next year.

4 out of 5 stars ST: TNG Strike Zone.......2004-01-14

Star Trek: The Next Generation Strike Zone written by Peter David is an early work in the TREK universe. This book introduces the Kreel as a rather primative race that has the ability to get into space, but they savange for what they have rather than invent. The Kreel come to find a rather advanced catche of weapons only to use them on their blood enemies the Klingons.

Peter David tells a convincing story as the Klingons and Kreel begin to realize that these weapons could only lead to extinction of both races and call upon the Federation to act as go between to institute a peace treaty. This early work of David's gets the characters right as Picard works his way through the lot given him as mediator and provider of transportation to both Klingon and Kreel parties sent aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. The Klingons send the Honorable Korby as their ambassador the Kreel send Aneel but Aneel has plans of his own. You can never just trust a Kreel.

There is another story within these pages. The story of the "Brain Trust" Wesley Crusher is insightful as he works to find a cure for the Rot which affects his friend Jaan, who is a Selelvian. The Selelvian are a long-lived species that look like elves, but they are subject to a genetic disease and Wesley puts all of his ardor into finding a cure. The book shows Wesley in a light that when he finally realizes that he can't know everything and Jean-Luc Picard is there for him.

I thought that to a a tender moment for Picard who didn't like children but came to Wesley's side in the time of need. The book has twists and turns and a rather big ending as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are being tested by a higher power. This early work of Peter David was entertaining and kept my interest till the end.

I gave this book a solid 4 star rating for a good story with a bang-up ending. The characters had interplay and the characteriztions were spot-on making for an enjoyable read. If you're a fan of Peter David's writing then this early work is a must read. There is set up for later works by David as he writes about the TREK universe.

5 out of 5 stars Peter David rules.......2003-12-27

Very action packed and, at the same time, humorous.

4 out of 5 stars STNG #5 - Survivors - A very good beginning for Peter David!.......2003-07-17

Keeping in mind that this was Peter David's first venture into the Star Trek universe, I thought this was a very good beginning for him. This is of course when one considers the prolific nature of how many Star Trek books this outstanding author has written. Peter David's style of writing, from this very first STNG novel of his to his latest, has always been quite fluid with superb plot detail and as always, a healthy amount of humor which other Star Trek novels sometimes lack. While I agree with other reviewers in that the conclusion to this novel is a bit off when compared to the rest of it, overall, this novel gave Star Trek readers but the first taste of many extraordinary adventures in Gene Roddenberry's universe by this author!

The premise:

This is also where Peter David first introduces the Kreel, a warlike race that he has briefly visited many times since. Here, the Kreel have happened upon powerful alien weapons and they decide to use these weapons on their blood enemies, everybody's favorite enemy, the Klingons.

Captain Picard and the Enterprise are called in to hopefully mediate a truce between these two bitter enemies and hopefully discover the nature of the powerful weapons discovered by the Kreel. What follows, is as I said above, an excellent first adventure in the twenty fourth century by one of Star Trek's premier authors, Peter David.

I highly recommend this novel to any and all fans of Star Trek and the Star Trek novels for you will certainly not be disappointed by this fine trek offering. {ssintrepid}

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but hard to take seriously.......2003-05-25

I've read reviews that say this was intended as a humor story, and Trek certainly has some gems in that category... But I still had problems taking this book seriously even as a humor story.

My problem is that it's obvious that the author didn't know the characters very well yet at this point. While Peter David has brought to us some of the absolute best titles in Trek literature, this was his first attempt at it, and it shows. It seems that he took the "bible" descriptions of the characters and charicatured them, to the point sometimes of being just plain silly.

No need to talk about the plot since that's done in other reviews. It was interesting, but the end was yet again a charicature of some Trek episodes, bringing a silly and overdone anticlimax to what could have been a rather formidable force.

I'm a collector, and one day I will read every Trek title put out by Pocket Books. If you're like me, then read this and enjoy it as much as you can. If you're looking for quality Trek storytelling, this may be one worth passing over.

5 out of 5 stars Great Baseball Novel.......2004-10-22

This is a great story of a little-used pitcher who gets to start the biggest game of the year and a veteran umpire. The pitcher has two things working against him. He had made a comment at an off-season banquet that offended the umpire, who happens to be working behind the plate for this game. The umpire's best friend is in trouble with gamblers and has asked him to throw the game.

It's a well-written story, with the point-of-view alternating from chapter to chapter so we see what's going through the pitcher's mind in one chapter and then see the umpire's thoughts in the next one.

I've read quite a few baseball novels over the years and this is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Neat just to see a novel by Bouton.......2003-12-25

Yes, it's neat just to see a novel by Bouton.....and it's a good effort. The chapters are alternately from the points of view of the pitcher (a barely-fictionalized version of Bouton himself) and umpire. This fading veteran pitcher has been chosen to pitch the pennant-deciding game, and the umpire, a veteran about to retire, is trying to throw the game against him. If you're a baseball fan, and especially if you're a Bouton fan, you'll be carried along nicely.

Some of the players are given actual players' names, and one of the neat things is......well, I'm editing out some of what I originally had here, because it was sort of a "spoiler" and I guess some people didn't like that!! Let's just say that an "actual" player has a role in the outcome of the big game.

Recommended for baseball fans, and a must for Bouton fans.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Home-run, But Not a Strike-out, Either.......2001-12-25

Bouton and Asinof's "Strike Zone" is a surprisingly good book. I didn't think that a novel written in alternating chapters by two authors would even be readable, much less absorbing, but this book is both. The two parallel story-lines are simple but affecting: a journeyman pitcher's efforts in a crucial game and the plate umpire's moral dilemma about whether or not to define the strike zone in a way that will "throw" the game and thus allow an old friend to pay off a gambling debt. The action takes place in one 24-hour period, but with flashbacks effectively
worked in to fill out the two men's lives. Particularly when the action moves to the baseball diamond, the novel perfectly captures both the leisurely pace and rhythms and the terrific tensions of the game.

Anyone who's read "Ball Four" would know that the pitcher, Sam Ward, is closely based on Bouton himself--all the stuff about knuckleballs is a tip-off--and the stone wall building as therapy after a marital separation comes directly out of Bouton's own experience, as described in the Epilogue to "Ball Four." Sam Ward is Bouton in the same way that Father Blackie Riley is a kind of fantasy stand-in for Father Andrew Greeley in the latter's novels.

Maybe the most difficult thing to write in a novel is a good sex scene and Bouton succeeds with what seems like unpromising material: an anecdote about Ward relieving his pre-game tensions by masturbating in his hotel room before going to the ballpark to pitch. Bouton spares the reader any description of what Ward is actually doing; instead he recounts in rapid succession the series of vivid fantasies that pass through his character's mind, then ends with a humorous zinger that picks up a punch line from earlier in the story. The episode is very sexy (as well as romantic, since he's fantasizing about his estranged wife) and very funny--a rare combination that few writers could capture so successfully.

Not a great book, but a worthwhile read for baseball lovers. (I think the pitch-by-pitch description of the crucial game would drive non-fans out of their minds!)

3 out of 5 stars it ain't ball four.......2000-09-08

If you are looking for a baseball page turner, this book is tough to put down. But if you are looking for the real life baseball insights found in Bouton's classic "Ball Four" you won't find them here.

4 out of 5 stars Well-written, to much detail.......1999-10-14

"Strike Zone" is a book that tells the story of a pitcher of the Chicago Cubs named Sam Ward. Sam is a middle-aged guy who has never pitched a major league game before. Sam gets the chance to pitch for one of the Cubs biggest games of the year. Sam and the umpire Ernie Kolacka tell the story; the chapters go on in detail about everything that is going on from their point of view.

The authors of this book really went into detail about everything, making the book more understandable. A bad thing about the detail is the it makes the book longer than it should have been, because the book takes place in a twenty-four hour period and there is so much detail it made it kind of drag on. "Strike Zone" is very well-written and things are written as if one could actually see them. The authors convey their purpose very well by telling every single detail, but once again a little too much detail can be bad.

Blade and the rest of the Freedom Force blast their way through 2 seperate stories in this double header of carnage and grisley fun. In the 1st story Blade and friends travel into the San Diego "Dead Zone" a ground zero bomb crater from the 3rd world war. As the story progresses sadistic carnage and sly wittisims accompany a easily read storyline. Not overly complex but fun none the less. In the second story a madman is set out to destroy the alaskan pipeline and, you guessed it, Blade is there to stop him. Snowmobiles, Automatic weapons and the spilt contents of human dominate this slaughter on ice. Another murderous rampage a la Blade. All and all this double dose of death is a good deal and a fun read. All the Chaos, Mutants and bullet wounds you can fill up on in a sitting.

Baseball is back! If you've ever wondered about spitballs, pine tar, or the size of the diamond - if you've ever wanted to know the fascinating stories behind the rules - then Spitters, Beanballs, and the Incredible Shrinking Strike Zone has all the answers.

The authors take us on a unique trip 'round the bases, explaining the development of the existing rules and pulling in plenty of fascinating history, lore, and trivia on the way to home plate. For example, did you know that there are no weight requirements for bats? Anecdotes feature legendary figures and events such as:

YOGI BERRA, who threw himself out at first while playing in the minors, in order to win a bet for a steak dinner.

FRED "Bonehead" MERKLE, who famously cost the New York Giants the pennant when he failed to tag a base.

ALBERT BELLE and the famous corked bat controversy.

Mets manager BOBBY VALENTINE, who appeared in disguise after having been ejected by umpires.

GEORGE BRETT and the infamous pine tar incident.

Spitters, Beanballs, and the Incredible Shrinking Strike Zone goes rule by rule and illustrates it's stories with archival photographs from the Hall of Fame, and modern photos of such heroes as Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson.

Book size is 6" x 9", with B&W photographs throughout book.

Glenn Waggoner states why baseball rules came to be and how they make this the greatest game there is. He also gives examples of stuff occuring for some of the more unique rules. I would say any baseball fan needs to have this book in their library.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent history of the rules of the game.......2000-03-27

This book is a "must-have" for anyone who loves the game. It not only explains the rules in detail, it often gives the history of the rules as well.

The authors clearly did their research in the writing of this book. It is full of baseball anecdotes that are both informative and educational about the history of our national pastime.

A truly enjoyable book. I highly recommend it.

      Book Description

While life as a big league baseball player has brought Andy Pettitte fame and accolades, it has also brought with it temptation. However, Andy learned to deal with temptation long before he donned his first major league uniform. While still a teenager, Andy committed himself to Christ and a life of purity. With his target identified early on, he has been able to hit the strikezone throughout his life.

Andy and author Bob Reccord encourage TruthQuest™ boys to commit now to a life of purity and integrity, not only in sex but in action, thought, and motive.

4 out of 5 stars Book for all young men.......2007-09-23

I think this is a good book for baseball loving teenagers and young men. Great life lessons with experiences and struggles of Andy Petitte. Great daily devotional type reading that should touch many lives. I Highly recommended this book but would add that I liked the parts written by Petitte more so than the parts by Bob Reccord. Guess I just a baseball fan.
