Book Description
A superb guidebook described in Bookwatch as 'the home astronomer's "bible"', Turn Left at Orion provides all the information beginning amateur astronomers need to observe the Moon, the planets and a whole host of celestial objects. Large format diagrams show these objects exactly as they appear in a small telescope and for each object there is information on the current state of our astronomical knowledge. Revised and updated, this new edition contains a chapter with ten new spreads describing spectacular deep sky objects visible from the southern hemisphere, and tips on observing the upcoming transits of Venus. It also discusses Dobsonian telescopes, with hints on using personal computers and the Internet as aids for planning an observing session. Also new to this edition are redrawn "Guidepost" figures at the beginning of each season chapter that allow readers to visualize a three-dimensional view of the sky's dome; redesigned seasonal object layouts that provide more space for the naked-eye charts; a new spread on double stars near Boötes has been added to Spring, replacing the "Shrinking Double" spread; and a unique "When and Where to Look" table has been added to the last page, among other new features. Unlike many guides to the night sky, this book is specifically written for observers using small telescopes. Clear and easy to use, this fascinating book will appeal to skywatchers of all ages and backgrounds. No previous knowledge of astronomy is needed.

Best Book for Prospective Telescope Owners.......2007-09-25
Most astronomy books and magazines for amateurs are filled with highly-processed, color photographs of planets and deep sky objects taken with long-exposures through observatory telescopes. I call these photos astroporn because they raise new telescope owner's expectation to unrealistic levels. One cannot see full color detailed images through a small telescope with the naked eye. "Turn Left at Orion" accurately describes with sketches what one will actually see.
I recommend that prospective telescope buyers check out "Turn Left at Orion" before they fork over their hard earned cash. If you decide to buy a telescope anyway, this book gives clear directions on how to find and observe over one hundred objects in a non-technical way making it the best book to start with. While this book may be too simple for experienced amateurs, I highly recommend it for it's accurate descriptions and clear instructions.
Good but..........2007-09-01
Many have sung the praise of this book...I'm somewhat of a "newbie" had a 13" Dobsonian "light-bucket" 20 years ago, but never really did much...just bot a 102mm Celestron spotting scope. So have been buying books to aid me in getting into Astronomy better this time...This book is good for children...but a better book for adults is Neil Bone's Deep Sky Observer's Guide. It's also set up for small scopes under 100mm. The Orion book has very simple finder maps and is organized by season. Bone's book is organized by type of object, such as "open cluster" and then by easy to difficult to find. Bone's finder charts are much better in artistic value and use, being white stars on blue background, where as most of Orion's are black stars on white background. Orion has 100 objects to view, Bone has over 200...At the end of Bone's are: 8 very nice star charts as well as each constellation listing objects and a Messier List and a list of Objects by Magnitude and finally a list of Objects by Seasons (to view). All in all 215 power packed pages!...Yes the Orion is a hard back, but the binding is glue-injected pages, will the binding crack and pages fall out??...Bone's is a paperback, but the leaves are folded and stitched, so pages will NEVER fall out. Bone's book is 5X8, Orion is 9X11 1/2 much bigger to take outside and pack around. I woun't be using Orion much. Bone I will use a lot.
Not the book for me!.......2007-06-22
I am an amateur and bought this book based on the other reviews and ratings given. I was looking for a book to help me locate some of the more interesting night sky objects and this one seemed to be "the book." Well, when I got the book, I opened it up and immediately felt a little overwhelmed by all of the text-and I do mean there is a lot of text. More than I wanted. This book just wasn't what I was looking for in a guide to the night sky. Perhaps later on, I will find this book more helpful.
Don't get frustrated with your small scope!!!!!!.......2007-04-30
I've read a series of astronomy books, but Left at Orion and Nightwatch (by Dickinson) are at the top of my list. If I had a small refractor, Left at Orion would be the best pick. Nightwatch by Dickinson is best for picking the right scope and accessories and learing the celestrial objects (e.g. planets and stuff). However, Left at Orion is the best for learing how to locate objects in the night sky USING A SMALL TELESCOPE. I've been pulling my hair out about not being able to locate objects for the longest, but now I have a great tool that will help me. This is the book you use in the dark. I sit down by my scope with my RED flashlight and this book that is such a great guidance. So don't get frustrated and throw away your small scope just yet. Get comfortable and use this guide. You can always upgrade and have the small scope for for any company who wants to join you. I wish I didn't return my small scope so quickly. Anyways, after reading this book, I bought an 80mm refractor to travel on the plane with because I can't lug that big Newtonian Dob around. Yes, Left at Orion and Nightwatch are the best picks whether you have a small refractor or a big reflector. However, Nightwatch (by Dickinson) is a book to buy when you want to upgrade your telescope. Be ware: Dickinson does NOT have the nicest things to say about the small telescopes, however, if you want to upgrade, BUY NIGHTWATCH FIRST BEFORE PURCHASING A NEW TELESCOPE!!! Please read the other reviews to help guide your purchase.

Book Description
Erotomania is the mental disorder of obsessive stalkersthe delusional belief that their victims are actually in love with them. This unique account by a psychiatrist who became the victim of her own patient provides a thorough examination of this often misunderstood disease. I Know You Really Love Me unfolds like a psychological thriller, as Dr. Orion first finds herself the subject of obsessive love and then unsuccessfully tries to free herself of her patient, a demanding, manipulative woman who doggedly follows Orion from state to state and continues to stalk her to this dayseven years and counting. The author honestly explores her own experience while also providing an overview of this mental illness, including:c fascinating case histories and personal accounts of other victims, including a woman rabbi, a priest, a doctor, a fashion designerc cases that led to murder, some of the victim, some of the stalkerc protective measures to deter a potential stalker or erotomanicc the need for adequate treatment and punishment of erotomanicsc information on anti-stalking laws and ways to strengthen themc organizations that assist victimsThe first book devoted entirely to erotomania, I Know You Really Love Me will be of interest to those in psychiatry and the medical profession, victims, and the public at large, well-acquainted with this disease (though probably not with its name) through chilling media reports of

Great subject; horrid writing........2007-08-04
I bought and read this book when it first came out, and promptly returned it to the publisher for a refund. It was riddled with misspellings, poor syntax, and bad punctuation. If the physician-author wrote the book that way, shame on her. If the publisher hired someone to proofread and edit this book, they failed miserably: these were the errors I'd expect to see from a third-grader; not someone who purportedly has at least a four-year college degree.
If you're curious about this phenomenon, there are other, better-written books to be had.
Not just frightening for women!.......2000-05-20
As a male Sophomore in college reading this book I was thoroghly terrified! It is noted that this does not just happen to women, but to men as well. Many times after reading this book was I looking around my car before getting into it, just making sure Fran Nightingale wasn't lurking behind it! Genuinly frightening (moreso because its a true story) read for either gender!
A Must-Read for ALL young women. It can happen to anyone........1999-05-11
This is the first real Pop-psych book that describes the Stalking Phenomenon in correct and accurate Mental Health language. This book was recommended to me by a City Prosecuter who felt it would help me understand why My Ex-boyfriend stalked me with the aid of his new wife (of all people!). Stalking is NOT just ex-boyfriends and Yes, women can become erotically obsessed with other women in a non-sexual manner OR, as in my case, they can be motivated to carry on an Erotomanic pursuit of a target whom their lover has been stalking which can resultin a whole new range of Stalking behavior. This particular book deals with a Patient stalking her Psychiatrist with whom she has become obsessed - a common subset of Erotomania. However, the book also attempts and manages to cover pretty well the basics of Erotomaniacally motivated Stalkings in general which makes it a valuable addition to anyone's Library. ANYONE can become a target and Young Women should read a book like this before they leave home or college to enter the workforce. Even that may not be soon enough since I know of a few cases where friends of mine have had their highschool and junior high aged daughters subjected to such behavior. Even so.. I feel it is fair to say this is an essential book for Young Women. Men of all ages should and can read this as well, but statisically, women are at a higher risk which is why I singled them out as a group.
What really makes this book work is that the writer has been targetted herself which permits her to identify with her reader in a way that she could not if she were merely a Clinician attempting to describe this illness or a law enforcement official trying to describe how to deal with it via the Legal System. The sad facts are that your friends and family will usually NOT understand what you are going through and many people will wonder if perhaps you yourself have done something to set the erotomaniac off. Another sad fact is that going to the Law may cause an escalation in the Stalking and you may also be greeted with the preconceived notion again that the victim has done something to encourage the mentally ill Stalker. Since the author has lived with a longterm, dedicated Stalker, she is able to relate and describe the specific brand of terror you feel under the circumstances. If you have never, for example, lived peacefully and proserously for, oh, a year maybe 18 months only to look up one day and see your old Stalker smiling at you from across the street from your new home in a new town in a new State under an unlisted number without your name on the lease, you won't be able to speak to the audience for this book.
Now that I have communicated her closeness to the subject let me say just this: The police generally don't understand Stalkers so if you are being Stalked, it is now YOUR job to learn to understand their behavior as best you can. This book and Gavin DeBecker's THE GIFT OF FEAR will give you a good start. Once you have these two under your belt, you will begin to see that there is no real effective system in place for dealing with Erotomania when it intrudes on your life in a criminal manner and therefore you must make some careful choices as to how to react or whether to react at all. In my own case, My longterm Stalker seeks attention to his and his wife's actions towards me. If I react by calling the police or filing reports of restraining order violations, they go into full steam ahead mode as opposed to when I choose not to react and they eventually get bored by my refusal to bat the tennis ball back into their court an they quiet down for a few months. I feel one of the best messages of this book is to give you, the reader, a Psychiatric portrait of this illness instead of the usual folk wisdom stuff we are fed by the daytime talk-shows, the local news and via hand-me down info from friends and family who have brushed up against Stalkings. This is a valuable book and tool in your own fight to arm yourself with info and preserve your own sanity by learning about that peculiar brand of metally ill person who has either already made you the most important thing in their life or might at some point in the future. Good luck. Be safe. Remember, you are your own best protector.
I must read this again!.......1997-08-12
I applaude Dr. Orion's courage in writing this book. Her personal eight year experience with her stalker, police departments, and the court system has brought forth a book that is both informative and enjoyable to read. I only wish that I had this information 2 years ago. I hope that "I Know You Really Love Me" will be the stepping stone in increasing the awareness of how prevalent stalking is for the average human.
I am very proud of you for writing this book.
AN EXCEPTIONAL JOURNEY INTO THE MIND & HEART.......1997-07-02
This is a remarkable book. We have all spent the last decade reading about stalking in the newspaper and watching TV news reports which give a tiny snapshot of this topic. Dr. Orion has given us the whole portrait, with meticulous brush-strokes that coney every nuance and subtlety of a problem that is anything but subtle. The book opens with a sentence that sets the stage beautifully: "I am a psychiatrist who has been having a long-term love affair with a former patient -- in her mind, that is." From there, Orion never loses compassion for the woman who has stalked her for years. She tells of her journey through fear, through the courts, through the actions and comments of her psychiatric peers, through police stations, law offices, frightening encounters at her home and office, and ultimately, to the place she has reached: the place of knowing of stalking from the inside out, as a mental-health expert, as a woman, and as a target. She moves from victim to victor, and the reader is taken along through wonderful writing that conjures the truth about stalking better than any news report or TV movie could ever hope to. Thus, we get the best gift: a learning experience we can enjoy along the way

good Fiction.......2005-06-20
Just like the old Chariots of Gods, his books are very interesting and and entertaining. But please dont think that you are reading a scientific work. Real historical works are not as sexy and entertaining as these books just as real archeologists are not Indiana Joneses.
Amazingly boring.......2005-01-06
Granted, the author got some interesting ideas. But why does he hide them for the most part of the book? About 80% of the book is a repetitive description of different facts, theories and opinions, with the author arguing about "what is not correct", and no clue at what is he getting at. Well, not fare, he gives some clues, but not more. Sometimes it looks like he's got carried away with a need to talk (or write) without any point to deliver.
Again, that's not to say that he does not have any interesting things inside, he certainly has. It's just those interesting things would fit into 20 pages if described without well-known, repetitive and not-so-exciting things.
AMAZING.......2004-06-14
Next to Grahm Hancock, Robert Bauval is the creme de la creme of astro-archeology.
Everything you thought you knew about the pyramids is WRONG.
In the future the work of Bauval and Hancock is the marker that determines our understanding of ancient works like The Great Pyramid.
We are in a 'new age' of understanding our past thanks to the works of geniuses like Bauval and Hancock.
AMAZING
Interesting but over-wrought.......2004-01-12
The story has some very interesting points, some very well researched. But there are some conclusions made which seem illogical and strain plausibility. There are points made which could have simple explanations that have already been offered, yet the authours try to explain them in a different, more circumstancial way, to fit in with their thesis.
There are some very interesting parts and the book contains a large amount of useful information. If you have an open mind (or if you are a conspiracy theorist) there is much too enjoy in this book.
The importance of having purpose........2002-09-16
What was the purpose behind building the pyramids? I know. Why do archeologists feel compelled to drill thru every door leading to secret rooms within pyramids? I know the purpose behind that as well. More importantly I know that unless you wish to end up like Atlantis and every other ancient civilization that being vanished and vanquished you will remove urselves from all juxtapositions against pyramids. Ur better off rock or mountain climbing. Don't tell me I didn't tell u so! Does the book address these issues?

It was very helpful because I is the text book of my pronunciation class and we used it every class.
Question?.......2000-07-04
I believe this os the best book for pronouncing american english because this book includes intonation. Q:I went to heinle publishers' site. They said The last publish of this book is for 3 years ago How do you have the 99 December?
[Additional] tape cost not included!.......2000-03-18
Though the book is good, there is no mention of the [additional] cost for the tapes! There are other books that are good enough and come with tapes. The tapes are good to have, but not at that price. There are plenty of other books available that come with tapes...
Excelent book to teach or to learn English phonetics.......1999-03-27
I have found this book very clear and easy to follow by anyone wishing to improve his English pronunciation. The examples and exercises are excellent, specially the contrast ones. The explanations and practices about stress and intonation are very useful and easy to understand. This book was given to me without the tapes which I have not been able to get. I am sure that these tapes are a necessary complement to this book.

Pole Shift: Predictions and Prophecies of the Ultimate Disaster
ASIN: 0932813917 |
Book Description
According to Mayan & Egyptian prophecy, the earth awaits a super catastrophe in 2012: its magnetic fields will completely reverse in one agonizing shift. Devastating earthquakes and tidal waves will completely destroy civilization as Europe and North America are pulled north to polar latitudes. Almost all the earth's population will perish. These predictions stem from the sophisticated astronomy of the Maya and Egyptians, descendants of the legendary original Atlanteans, whose island, in this theory, is now buried under the South Pole. The Atlanteans predicted the world-wide flood in 9792 BC. In 2012, according to several 10,000 year-old star codes, Venus, Orion and several other stars will take the same 'code-positions' as in 9792 BC. There is also a forgotten and massive labyrinth, created by the Old Egyptians, of secret chambers filled with artifacts and documents about the previous flood.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of My Money.......2007-08-11
I knew I made a mistake in buying this book when I read the first sentance: "I am writing this book out of sheer anger, despair, and misery." The author, Patrick Geryl, writes in hyperbole and loosely uses such language as, "After reading these notes, I was gripped by a terrible fear. Ir's clear that a world disaster of unknown proportions is in store for us." and "I felt so desperate I could have killed myself. Luckily I didn't have the time for it, because I had to finish my research first." He is not a researcher. He is hysterical. I cannot believe such nonsense was actually published and presented as "new age".
What a bunch of hog wash!!.......2007-07-19
P$eudo-$cience at its worst. The author says that Atlantis existed and
that is the end of it. No buts. He describes how they managed to swim
to Egypt to start their new civilization. You have to be drunk or really
stoned to follow his reasoning. The only thing missing are crop circles and
messages from aliens.
Don't Waste Your Time.......2007-06-21
Patrick Geryl has to rank as the worst published writer of all time! His theory that the world will be destroyed in 2012 based on the most pointless of mathematical calculations is right up there with that of giddy pre-teen girls finding out whom they'll marry by consulting the Ouija board! If the Egyptians and the Mayans were leaving us the result of their scientific prowess messages that we could actually use, they might have just put up a sign that said, Beware 2012! The crypto mumbo jumbo of "proof" in arcane measurements of buildings just makes you want to laugh! Every aspect of Geryl's work screams "Inept"! His theory that there is some huge labyrinth buried in the Egyptian desert that contains 3000 rooms full of the ancients' calculations--oh, Geryl claims to have found it but just couldn't get around to unearthing anything--puhlease! I'm sure there are relics from ancient Egypt that remain to be discovered, but the largest building ever made by man lying doggo in the sands for this long just makes you want to roll your eyes! Now, if you have read any of his work, you will understand what I am doing with the exclamation marks! I'm sure he draws circles over his i's, too!
Major Disappointment .......2007-04-24
It might very well be true large-scaled cataclysms obliterated past civilizations. It might well be true a cataclysm will occur on or around 2012. And maybe our ancestors really were trying to warn us of global disasters that happen cyclically. There's a lot of interesting literature on these subjects, and I've enjoyed quite a few of them, but "The Orion Prophecy" was a poorly written disappointment.
Although the author's theory regarding solar storms and magnetic field reversals is worth looking into, the (otherwise apparently very intelligent) author does little to build his case. His crazy number connections are nothing more than numerology and can easily be dismissed on dimensional bases alone. For example, in Chapter 16 Geryl randomly squares the number of seconds the earth shifts in the zodiac each year, 3.3333, to 11.11111 square seconds, then somehow connects this with the average sunspot cycle of 11 years. He does nothing to explain what led him to squaring that number, why the mathematical operation is relevant, or how 11.11111 square seconds is equivalent to or connected to 11.11111 years. It's just the same number. The sunspot cycle ranges from roughly 8 to 18 years anyway. The accuracy of seven significant digits also seems arbitrary, falsely implying some high degree of precision. It's like he's just clicking away on the calculator looking for anything familiar without understanding why certain operations should or could be made and with no concern for dimensional analysis.
I also couldn't understand the significance he places on the motions of Venus and why its retrograde loop in and around Gemini and Orion has such importance according to the Egyptian holy books. With Venus performing its retrograde loop approximately every year and a half, this loop will occur in various places along the zodiac quite often, so its loop in the vicinity of Orion fails to strike me as especially significant regardless of his interpretations of the ancient texts. These days, readily available programs such as Starry Night display these motions very easily across incredibly time spans, past and future. I looked and I don't see anything especially compelling there.
Apparently I wasn't as excited as Geryl about his "discoveries", because I found myself rolling my eyes at the numerous exclamation points. I laughed at the "Walter Mitty" part where he fantasizes speaking to the passengers and crew on a special ship designed to survive the catastrophe, the guy who saved everybody's lives. He even has "200 young girls" on board, for him no doubt, to repopulate the world.
He advocates certain extreme lifestyle changes such as a hunger diet and outlawing nuclear power, no doubt an angry axe to grind there.
Does the sun indeed periodically perform these devastating magnetic reversals? It could very well be, but this book does more to discredit the theory than to support it. It also adds more "giggle factor" to the already over ridiculed theories of ancient Mayan and Egyptian advanced knowledge.
If it wasn't laughable, it'd be a real bummer. Sad, because if there are indeed periodic cataclysms that can be predicted, Geryl only succeeds in turning a potentially serious issue into a dismissible farce.
Is this real warning ? ....... valuate the findings !!.......2007-03-21
How to start. Okey, I finished reading this book a 12hours ago. So i have fresh view. The book is from 2001, so there were several books/theories which might affect/confirm/be against the Patrick's finding. So don't use this book as ONLY reference. Take tha facts and valuate them against other findings.
Sunspot theory is really amazing thought. Pole shift is quite old theory, but still at place. So those part are really ok to read. Story about the "world destrucions" and comments are inspiration to get some more information about Atlantis (Oh god another BIG ISSUE, huh ?) I want to pin point the part about the "turning" / "shift" of Zodiac during previous catastrophes. This is the MAJOR one part for me. The naming of Zodiac constelation is also interesting part of this book.
Mathematical proof is, let's say not so "clear" for me as for Patrick. But no any discussion about the "holy" and "important" numbers. But I will welcome some explanaion about why and now he makes "divide" and than "add" in exact points of decoding. So I am missing such as parallel findings.
I like his style of writing, because it was relaxing. He is playing the game with the reader. This keep the reader reading.
Maybe it will be great to get some "revised" version from year 2007, just to see the author's selfreflection/criticism. Generally it is good book and it fit your 2012 study collection of books. But i repeat, valuate all the facts. Do not trust anyone even, if there is simply 1+1=2 :)

Book Description
Did you know that Sir Isaac Newton, inventor of calculus, and discoverer of the universal laws of gravity and thermodynamics ,was interested in astrology? Or that, in his day, the seventeenth century astronomer, Johannes Kepler, was more famous for the uncanny accuracy of his astrological predictions than for his three laws of planetary motion? Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth I, Napoleon, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Carl Jung...the list of greats who followed astrology is a very long one. Like you, those distinguished women and men sensed that the stars play an important role in shaping our characters and our destinies.
Astrology For Dummies is a fun, easy intro to astrology’s mysteries. Rae Orion, author of New Woman magazine’s monthly astrology column, offers a shortcut through the jargon and tells you how to:
- Understand how the planets affect you
- Figure out your horoscope
- Interpret sun signs, moon signs, rising signs, and more
- Know what your horoscope means for romance, work, and your future
- Apply astrology to everyday decisions
- Take advantage of astrology software and Web sites
Astrology goes much deeper than the sun signs covered in your daily paper, and Astrology For Dummies is your star chart for navigating its many depths, twists, and turns. You’ll explore the significance of the Sun, Moon, planets, rising sign, and the twelve houses. And in no time you’ll:
- Cast your birth chart and look up each sign in it by sign and house
- Unearth basic patterns that characterize your chart as a whole
- Analyze the geometrical relationships linking your planets
- Interpret with voids, empty houses, and other manifestations of zero
- Recognize how current planetary placements, or transits, influence your life
- Understand retrograde planets and why they’re not always bad
- Use astrology in everyday life and use the Moon to your utmost advantage
For millennia, people have used astrology to help them unlock the mysteries of their psyches, unleash their potentials, make the right matches, and even take an occasional peek into the future. Now let Astrology For Dummies show you how to make it work for you.

Fairly complete.......2004-10-16
This book was much more complete than I ever expected. I use it as a reference on a regular basis. The information appears to be fairly accurate and fairly detailed. Lots of formulas to help the user calculate and draw their own charts.
Excellent overall introduction to astrology.......2004-04-12
This is a first class general introduction to all of real astrology. If you have heard or suspected that there is a great deal more to it than the newspaper columns, this book is a good place to begin finding out more. Rae Orion explains the basics and complexities of the birth chart (a proper horoscope is based on the exact time, date and place of birth) in a clear, straightforward manner.
In "The Cosmic Cookbook" section, Orion takes the reader through the basics of birth chart interpretation. Sun signs, Moon signs, the positions of all the planets in the various signs and houses e.g. Mars in Aquarius, Uranus in the sixth house and so on. Real life examples are scattered throughout the book. Other sections cover basic compatibility, both Sun sign combinations and more complex relationship astrology. Towards the end there is "Ten Types Of Astrology" (including Vedic and Chinese) and some more esoteric features of the horoscope are briefly covered in "Ten Ways To Complicate A Chart" (such as midpoints and Arabic parts).
An excellent starter. "Parkers Astrology" could be a colourful complement to this volume, and I recommend Stephen Arroyo's "Chart Interpretation Handbook" as a possible next step.
Ok for beginners.......2004-04-03
This was my first book on Astrology, and I must say it's definitely helpful in understanding some of the most confusing basic ideas behind the subject. The book goes into plenty of detail about what all the planets and houses mean and it teaches you how to read your own chart. I've already learned more from this book alone about my chart than I can even put together. However, I found the information about aspects a bit weak. The chart for figuring out the aspects of your chart didn't seem quite accurate (...), and the information about more aspects farther into the book was not easy to understand. I'd say if you want to learn more about aspects to find another book, but this is pretty good if you're just starting out!
Excellent and thorough.......2002-11-10
Don't write off this book because it's about astrology, and don't buy into the stereotype that believers are flaky. The author certainly doesn't fit this stereotype. This book is written seriously and intelligently. If you don't know anything about astrology and would like to learn as much as you can, this is the book for you. This book is very easy to understand and proves that astrology is uncannily accurate. Orion helps dispel skepticism (from close-minded people) regarding astrology by discussing the mathematical basis (referring to planetary alignment) for this ancient science. There is an entire section in the later pages of the book devoted to this mathematical aspect, and it gets quite complicated, though Orion breaks it down well. Even gifted mathematicians will have to spend some time here, but if you're devoted to it, you'll be pleased with the results. Keep in mind that you will need to know not only the date of your birth and your birthplace but your exact birth time, which is essential for an accurate reading. Give this book a chance, and you'll be awestruck with your newfound information and perspective.
Appropriate Title.......2001-03-15
Appropriate in that you'd have to be a dummy to believe in the validity of astrology. Time and time again the claims of astrology have been refuted. Yet, the popular press continues to pump out worthless tomes such as this one. When will the dumbing down of American society end?

Book Description
As the U.S.S. Titan ventures beyond the outermost reaches of known space, the telepaths in her crew -- including Diplomatic Officer Deanna Troi -- are overwhelmed by an alien cryof distress, leading the ship to the scene of a shocking act of carnage: a civilization of interstellar "whalers" preying upon and exploiting a familiar species of sentient spaceborne giants.
Appalled but reluctant to rush to judgment, Captain William Riker and his crew investigate, discovering a cosmic spawning ground in a region of active star formation -- the ecosystem for a bewildering array of diverse but similarly vast life-forms. While attempting to negotiate an end to the victimization of these creatures, Riker's crew inadvertently grants them the means to defeat their hunters' purpose...only to learn that things are not exactly as they seem.

Imagination and optimism: this is Star Trek at its best.......2007-02-11
ORION'S HOUNDS by Christopher L. Bennett is a book that amply showcases the author's gift for thinking on a grand scale while remembering to tell stories on a deeply personal level.
Bennett has conceived a richly layered and complex space-based ecology made up of enormous "cosmozoans," creatures that live in deep space, travel between the stars, and experience life in ways that small planet-bound beings never do. The variety of these "astrocoelenterates" --- some seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, others wholly original to Bennett's novel --- coexist in a shifting balance of symbiosis, cooperation, and predation. Some are intelligent, while others are more like massive animals.
Living among these creatures are the Pa'haquel clans, bipedal avians who lord over a multispecies community that hunts and harnesses the bodies of one species of cosmozoan, then uses those mechanically reanimated shells to hunt other space-beasts and defend worlds from the interstellar giants' ravenous appetites.
Then enter the Starship Titan and her crew, led by Captain Riker. Drawn by psychic pleas for help from the sentient cosmozoans hunted by the Pa'haquel, Riker and his crew do their best to stop the slaughter of the beings they affectionately know as "star-jellies." But their well-intentioned efforts to foster peace and understanding have unexpected and tragic consequences.
The same richness and diversity that Bennett brings to his deep-space "ecosystem" also informs his wonderful handling of the Titan's multispecies crew. When it comes to describing the points of view of beings that are truly alien and not just "humans with bumpy foreheads," Bennett ranks at the top of the current roster of Star Trek authors, alongside Heather Jarman.
A welcome discovery is that the crew of the Titan --- though their diversity often leads to misunderstanding, unease, and sometimes conflict --- demonstrate the spirit of tolerance that is at the heart of Star Trek. They don't give in to their fears or their resentments; they confront their prejudices; they reach out to those they don't understand and try to bridge the gap. Bennett understands that exploration is not just about venturing out into space but also about looking into our own souls. Another refreshing trait that they exhibit, with each other and with those they encounter, is one that is not often seen in Star Trek crews: humility.
Bennett's seamless fusion of real science with Star Trek's pseudo-science gives the book great verisimilitude, and his deft plotting and snappy dialogue make the book a genuine pleasure to read. Its resolution is one that builds logically on all the pieces of his narrative puzzle, and one that reinforces what many of the best Star Trek tales have been about: optimism, communication, peacemaking, and trying to make the places you visit better and safer for all the life-forms that exist there.
This is a book that embodies the noblest, bravest, and most hopeful aspects of Star Trek's enduring legacy. Add this one to your collection now.
The Best of the First Three in the Series.......2007-02-07
Titan: Orion's Hounds by Christopher Bennett is the best of the first three books in the Titan series. Bennett has a better handle on how to use Deanna Troi than Martin and Mangels did, and the crew is finally starting to gel as a team. Bennett also touches on aspects of a multi-species crew that are often overlooked-- for instance, how does a group of carnivorous predators get along with a group of herbivores?
However, this series continuing weakness regarding Riker is disturbing. He fares slightly better in this book but is still much too tentative and unsure. Come on folks-- bring back the Will Riker of The Best of Both Worlds!
This book revisits a familiar set of aliens, the telepathic space jellies from Encounter at Far Point, and sets up an interesting conundrum regarding the Prime Directive. It also dares to question the wisdom and purpose of the Prime Directive, which, although bordering on heresy in the Star Trek universe, is an idea whose time may have come.
I have read several reviews of this book and the first two in this series who are critical of the openly homosexual relationship between two of the crewmembers. I did not feel this relationship was inappropriate or over emphasized, it was treated the same as heterosexual relationships have always been treated in the series. Indeed, much of the first episode of DS-9 dealt with Sisko's resentment of Picard because of the death of Sisco's wife during the Borg wars. Star Trek has always been in the forefront of inclusiveness, and these books continue in that tradition.
I could, however, have done without the very public orgasm Troi experienced on the bridge of the Titan during a mating of the aliens. That was just a little too much TMI.
Titan , Book 3 , Orion's Hounds.......2007-01-06
I have to state that all of the Titan books, this one included, are excellent and have been a long time coming. Reading about Will Ryker as captain and Deanna Troi as his wife and first lady, plus as counselor on the ship has been most enjoyable! I am so glad that the Star Trek series lives on in books at least! I recommend these books to any Star Trek fan or perhaps any Star Trek fan wannabes!
Orion's Hounds - Bark Worse Than Their Bite.......2006-11-18
I bought and read the first 3 Titan books all in a row, just about as quickly as I could. In my other reviews of the first 2 books, I stated that I enjoyed the stories, but could have done without the whole gay theme. The stories were quite good, in my opinion, though.
This 3rd book, written by a new author from the first 2 books, wasn't a very good addition to the series. The author did a good job in writing, for the most part, but he tended to over-describe several situations in which it seemed like he was just adding fluff and words to make the book longer. Most of these rants didn't add anything to the story.
And I have to agree with one previous reviewer who said that the "star jellies" story wasn't all that interesting. This book was the "Star Trek 5" addition to the Titan series and I hope to see the next few books much stronger additions than this one.
The most annoying thing about this story was that Riker was made out to be a weakling. His indecisive actions contradicted the Prime Directive, caused more trouble for his crew, and pretty much left Deanna in charge of being the leader in the story. This is NOT the Riker that we all grew to know in the TNG series. I certainly hope that the next book includes a more powerful Captain to lead the new voyages of Titan.
Shows why Trek philosophy is more important than ever.......2006-10-12
I often fear that in today's fear-filled social climate, Trek's philosophy of peace and diversity is often lost on a neo-conservative, cynical and selfish new generation. The Star Jellies in the well-written novel Orion's Hounds are sentient creatures with a civilisation of their own. Would it be right for the Titan's crew to turn around and allow murder or genocide to be committed? Should respect for other cultures triumph over the respect for other lifeforms? Or are the other people implying that the Star Jellies lives aren't as important because they "aren't human"?
I've also noticed plenty of complaints about "too many aliens" on the Titan's crew. As a Trek fan of two decades, I'd like to point out that the whole point of Trek was to discover new life and new civilizations. If the reader can't tolerate the idea of aliens mingling with humans, then they are essentially rejecting Gene Roddenberry's original vision. They are completely missing the point of Star Trek, and quite frankly, shouldn't bother reading or watching it at all if that's the case.
The Titan series of books are a consistently very good (but not great) read. The biggest problem with Titan is that it has the biggest cast of any Trek novel I've read to date. I would strongly suggest to Pocket Books that they provide a Dramatis Personae at the beginning of each Titan novel, making it easier to follow all these characters. However, it's clear from the prose which of the cast are the 'leading' characters - and they're not who you'd expect. For instance, I find both Ra-Havreii and Melora Pazlar more interesting than the Science Officer Jaza.
It's interesting to see the way that Titan's multi-species crew use their diverse talents to resolve the diverse challenges they face. In that respect, the Titan novels do carry an important message, although they don't hammer the reader over the head with it. That it is our diverse talents and abilities, united together under common values and goals, which can help us overcome the challenges that we face. It's a timely message that's sorely needed - and shows that Star Trek is more relevant than ever. Even if no one is really listening anymore.

Master of Game Books.......2000-04-12
Even though the "Master of" computer games - Orion, Orion II and Magic - are no longer published, they are constantly on the classics list of many players. This book is as thorough and well produced as any guide you'll ever find, and a perfect complement to an excellent game. Very detailed and explanatory. When the games fade from your hard drive (years from now), this book will still be on your shelf as an example of "how it *should* be done."

In September 1989, Doreen Orion was just beginning her psychiatric practice when one of her female patients developed an erotomanic obsession with her. Over the next eight years, this patient skulked outside of Orion's house and at her workplace, leaving bizarre messages, watching her, and making her unwelcome presence known in virtually every aspect of her life. In I Know You Really Love Me, Orion recounts her legal and emotional struggles as she tried to take control of the situation.
As a psychiatrist, Orion has fascinating insights into the condition that causes some people to obsess inappropriately over others. She also describes compellingly the feelings of helplessness and fear that stalking causes its victims--but always with the compassion and understanding of someone who works with the mentally ill. Her unique perspective as both a victim and a professional makes I Know You Really Love Me not just a blow-by-blow account of a stalking, but a practical guide to understanding, avoiding, and discouraging stalkers. --Lisa Higgins
Book Description
Locked in a ward of an Arizona psychiatric hospital, the patient called Fran looked harmless, even ordinary. Meeting her, psychiatrist Doreen Orion had no warning that Fran suffered from erotomania, the bizarre mental disorder that causes stalkers to believe their victims are in love with them--and no inkling that she would be the next target of Fran's twisted, dangerous mind.
Now Dr. Orion reveals how she has been spied upon, accosted, and hunted for eight years, living in fear of her life and the lives of those closest to her. Changing her address and job, getting restraining orders and having Fran arrested, have all failed to end Fran's obsessive behavior, which continues to this day.
Recounting the ordeals of Madonna, David Letterman, and scores of others who have been terrorized by stalkers, Dr. Orion alerts potential victims to this increasingly deadly disorder--and tells what society must do to protect us all from those who would kill for love.
Customer Reviews:
Orion Turns Her Ordeal Into Our Education.......2004-12-17
The author, psychiatrist Doreen Orion, wrote this book to educate others about stalking, especially of the erotomanic variety. Erotomania is best known to most of us through mass media, which reports on those creepy individuals who go around convinced that celebrities are in love with them, married to them, etc. But this kind of stalking also happens to regular folks -- like Orion, whose chance encounter with a psychiatric patient turned into a years-long ordeal, with the patient following her, sneaking into her house, phoning, leaving letters, and even traveling from state to state to maintain unwanted contact with Orion.
Orion recounts her ordeal and intersperses it with information she learned when she applied her psychiatric and research skills to her own predicament. The result is what she intends. Her own experiences cause us to empathize with her, and putting ourselves in her shoes, we can see that being stalked (even by a person unlikely ever to attack one physically) is a harrowing, psychologically draining, altogether awful ordeal. Over and over, Orion ran into people who, never having experienced it, consider such devotion from another no more than a nuisance. Orion proves differently. And her description of the psychological condition of erotomania and the development of laws to counter it are interesting, and deep enough to teach something new even to those with long experience in the medical or criminal justice fields.
On the other hand, Orion's conclusions about what to do with the problem of erotomania seem to directly contradict what she says in her book. After noting again and again that punishment does not stop erotomanic stalkers, she says that maybe if they are punished more, they will stop. Longer imprisonment is probably a good idea, if only because while stalkers are in prison may be the only time their victims get any rest, but Orion's justified anger may be affecting her clinical judgment when she says extra punishment will do anything else.
And this is clearly Orion's first book, and possibly her editor's too. She misspells "aid" as "aide" and "loath" as "loathe," errors a spell-checker can't catch but she or her editor should have, and her writing starts out bland and clumsy. What is remarkable about this is how quickly her writing improves over the course of the book. In the beginning, I was wondering whether I could endure her style long enough to finish, but by the end she had found her voice and I was turning pages frantically.
Even before Orion's writing gels, though, the information she imparts makes her book a worthwhile read. There is more to the "celebrity stalker" type than meets the eye, and there are more of them than we know. Those who work in medicine or the law, especially, need to learn what Orion is teaching.
Brief response to Leah.......2004-09-02
In a highly readable form, this book very well presents the facts concerning stalking. It would have benefitted from a decent editor (for example, to get rid of inappropriate use of subjunctive, change "led" for "lead,") but overall, I recommend it strongly.
Leah complains that another reviewer mistakenly stated that Tim, Dr. Orion's husband, was her supervisor. It is Leah who is mistaken: on page 102, she explicitly states that they met when he was her resident supervisor and she a medical student.
Supervision.......2004-06-26
Actually, if you look on page 114 of the paperback edition- the author writes,"Ever since the day Tim and I had met, I as the fourth year medical student and he as the second-year resident assigned to supervise me..." Her fiance was, in fact, her supervisor for awhile. I don't think this fact detracts the the book's overall impact and importance, however.
Riveting Read, Crucial Information.......2002-07-18
This book blew me away. It is full of important information, not just for stalking victims, but for potential victims as well (ie all of us). But, more than that, this true story reads better than any fiction thriller out there. A friend who had been stalked, and found this book priceless, lent it to me. I could see why it had been so important to her, but even though I had never been stalked, I still found it to be a great read.
One more comment - I read the review below - Dr. Orion's husband was NOT her clinical supervisor. They were just in the same residency program. I'm not sure where this person got that erroneous info, but I just wanted to set that straight, as it would certainly effect the story if it were true, and I might not have read the book if I'd read that review, first.
excellent, but lacking a fulfilling depth.......2001-09-08
excellent because: grippingly written, obviously well-researched, carefully thought-out, and with powerfully expressed feelings of terror and powerlessness.
my critique: it sounds horrible to say, but I wonder if Doreen Orion really did all she could to protect herself from her stalker. it struck me that her only real growth in the book in relation to her stalker was to become a better legal advocate for herself, and as such the book degraded from a personal journey into a legalistic and advocacy morass.
then: I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow when she said how she met her psychiatrist fiancé - that he was her THERAPEUTIC SUPERVISOR! she failed to see the parallel in power dynamics between the beginning of her relationship with her fiancée and the beginning of her "stalker's" relationship with her! although I don't want to jump to any conclusions, I felt this was completely unmined territory in the book (and in Orion's personal life), and my raised antennae tell me there's more to this than meets the eye...
some other questions in the same vein: it seemed, as of publication of the book, that Orion's stalker was still at large, and would almost certainly read this book. why would Orion even open this door? I think she, like many writers and would-be famous people, use the most awful bits of their own personal life to launch themselves into the public eye, to get even more famous - but wouldn't that just fan the flames of an erotomanic? perhaps at some deep and unspoken-of level, despite her true horror of being stalked, she gets some primal gratification from the attention of her stalker, and somehow her stalker picks up on it...like the two of them feed each other...and actually are in a relationship.
finally: never does Doreen Orion mention some vital relationships of her own - that with any therapists of her own, or, and I think most importantly, with her parents. I can only wonder what knowledge of the dynamics between Orion and these important others would add to my understanding of her apparently still-evolving relationship with her stalker.

Great Game Terrible Guide.......2007-04-20
I recently dug out this classic game and the worthless guide I'm currently reviewing.
This book is simply a glorified version of the game manual. Its "hints and tips" amount to little more than creating data tables of the various weapons, environments, et al in the game. There is very little, if any, actual advice on how to win the game.
What really got me was the advice that, if one is having difficulty playing in a small universe or with a certain species...the author's don't tell you how to win in said environment, but rather suggest changing to a larger universe or trying an easier species. How enlightening. It fails to suggest strategies if one is low on money or behind in research or militarily, etc, etc, etc. This constitutes a guide!?! It also fails to suggest favorable ship types/combinations as the first game's guide did. It basically says, "It's up to you." This book is a failure on every level.
Truly, this book is not worth the paper it's written on. It was written by individuals who worked on the games development but who, obviously, didn't actually *play* the game. If you do happen to need help with this truly great game, look online. You'll find much better help there. This is the last Prima hint book I'll ever spend money on.
Extremely helpful!.......2001-08-02
This guide (which I found at a half-price bookstore) is very helpful. I use it often. My copy of MOO II did not include a printed manual, so I wanted a some sort of hard copy. There are a few minor mistakes in the printing, but is a great guide!
The most useful strategy guide I've read........1999-03-15
Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares is a very difficult strategy game intent on making the colonization of the galaxy as realistic as possible. The Strategy Guide assists you in doing just that.
The main force of influence in the Strategy Guide is the explanation of every little bitty thing inside of the game. The technologies for Research are completely explained in detail, in addition to suggestions being given for what to choose and at what time to choose them. The alien "Picks" option that allows you to customize aliens is completely explained and suggestions for alien creation are put forth. However, the writers have a bent for challenging themselves, which I highly suggest to veteran players of the game.
All in all, it explains the entire campaign necessary to bring down those pesky Antarans and how to best keep a Space Eel from spawning. Give it a peek sometime. You won't be disappointed.
