Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Workout Book I've gotten...simple and effective..........2007-09-16

This book makes weight training really simple since he has all the workouts planned out so you don't have to do any work in putting together exercises. I also bought the Weight Training Bible for Women and Losing to Win, but I couldn't get myself to use those because they were too complicated for me and weren't laid out in a simple enough format like this book. This book is very compact so that I can carry it to the gym with me to workout and not have to copy down the workouts like I would have to do with the other books.

After about 3 months, I lost 6 pounds, which is a huge difference on my petite 5'1" frame. I hardly did any cardio while I was on the program because I hate cardio, but still got the results I wanted. I should note that I was 112 before the program and 106 pounds after, so I didn't have a lot of fat to lose. People with a lot of fat to lose would probably lose more weight because the less you have to lose, the harder it is to lose weight, so in this light, I think the program was very effective.

My sisters and friends all noticed the huge difference in my physique within months of doing this program and they all asked me what I did. I sure told everybody about this book. It doesn't have any fancy variations or anything, but still effective and very simple to follow.

I stopped working out for a year, and have only gained back 3 pounds. To me, this is a good deal: it takes about 3 months to lose 6 pounds, but 1 year to gain back 3. No complaints here :P

Thank you, James Orvis, for creating this foolproof book for weight training novices! I am on the Volume II workout and will review that one when I finish!

5 out of 5 stars Truly workouts that work.......2007-08-23

I had this book before and after recovering from an injory, I decided to purchase the set of the books to get boack to working out safely and sanely. These books are like having a trainer without the outrageous cost.

5 out of 5 stars Keep It Simple.......2007-07-27

I'll admit that when this book arrived, I was initially disappointed. It seemed very basic and hardly the super-duper-kalamanuper weight lifting book all the reviews made me expect. I ain't no fitness god, but I've lifted weights over the years, and so I figured it was too basic for me. Since I don't like to waste money, I thought I'd just do the routines. What the heck, right?

Well, six weeks in, and I am SOLD on this program. I'm seeing gains like I never saw before, and the exercises are laid out in logical order with great, clear expectations. What I initially mistook as being too basic is really just clarity and simplicity.

I do wish there was a little information on nutrition, but only because Mr. Orvis is so dead on with all his other info.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-02-11

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I really didn't want a book that told me all about the muscle groups and the different theories behind weight training. I just wanted a proven plan to follow and to no longer make the decision on what I was going to do each day in the gym. This book has been perfect. I've spent less time in the gym and have seen better results. The only place the book could improve is to incorporate a spiral binding so that you can fold back the pages. The variety and different work out styles make each week a new learning experience in the gym. My body definately has no idea what's coming each week. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a no brainer weight training system.

2 out of 5 stars Good 12 week starter routine, but that's all it is........2006-11-29

First off, I believe this book to be suitable for a beginner. If you have already been lifting six months to a year and are looking for fresh workout ideas, I wouldn't bother buying the book. There are better books (and web sites) out there for your needs.

My biggest gripe is that there is only one 12 week workout plan. When buying I did not realize that the "workouts" in the title would mean the workouts that make up each week of one single 12 week plan.

I had this set of workout books a few years ago but had lost them in moves. After returning to the gym from an injury, I decided to buy them again. It is like having a trainer without the outrageous costs.

3 out of 5 stars Some good stuff but.........2007-06-28

This book's forte is that it give detailed instructions with pictures for all of the exercises. The bad thing is that the routines in here just contain enough exercises to hit all of your muscles.

Easy to use. Very helpful in expanations and use of pictures. Great choice.

5 out of 5 stars Don't cha just love him?.......2007-03-21

I went through this Vol II twice and then added my own grids stapling small papers over the grid sections until midway thru the fourth round. That sums up my thoughts on the book :). Needless to say me and the worn book went bazerk when Vol 3 appeared on his website. It's the same basic layout, so why isn't it offered on Amazon yet? Who knows, but please keep them coming Jimmy!

5 out of 5 stars What a great workout book!.......2007-02-22

This book is so easy to follow and it is just like you have a personal trainer.... I can't wait till his III book is available..... Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very good fly fishing resource.......2007-08-05

For very good information tool for the novice flyfisherman and it's even a good reference guide for the more experienced flyfishing individual.

4 out of 5 stars A very good fly fishing guide.......2007-06-27

I am a novice to fly fishing. I had ordered Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide together with the L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing and I have to say that L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing has a slight advantage over this one. On the other hand though, this book provides a well-rounded package of information on fly fishing, which the beginners will no doubt appreciate in time as well once they get past the basics. Pros: This is a well written book for all fly fishers. Nobody will find it boring. Even the most advanced fly fishing enthusiasts will benefit from this book. Con: The beginners might have difficulty understanding the basic concepts and terminology. In conclusion, I think I will learn the fundamentals of this sport/pastime from the L.L. Bean guide at the beginning and will advance to Orvis book to refine my knowledge and build on my experience. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent illistrations.......2007-05-26

This is a great book to have if you're just beginning or if you want a quick reference as an expert. The size is a bit unrealistic to travel with and is the only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Fly Fishing.......2007-04-10

New fly fishermen will love this great resource, which is full of beautiful pictures and helpful diagrams. Rod types, fly lines, and casting basics are all covered.

5 out of 5 stars Great Informative Book.......2007-04-06

For someone just getting into the sport, like myself, this book provides plenty of punch for the money. I find myself using it as an encyclopedia of sorts for all things related to fly fishing. Highly recommend!

Conceived for novices, the Guide may be simple, but it's not simplistic. Filled with photographs and drawings and written in clear, direct prose, it's basic enough to demystify the ABC's of a complex sport and sophisticated enough to remain useful as a ready reference and constant refresher no matter what your angling skills. "The book," Rosenbauer admits up front, "is the bare bones of fly fishing; it does not set out to tell everything." The opening chapter answers the most important question for beginners: What is fly-fishing? "Fly casting," he explains, "makes it possible to deliver a relatively weightless lure or imitation of a living creature on target, using line weight to develop momentum. That's a fairly dry way of saying that, using a fly rod, you can catch fish with an artificial lure that can't be presented by any other method." Rosenbauer goes on to cover rods and line sizes, reels, leaders, casting technique, flies, fly selection, fish behavior, tactics, and accessories. He even provides an essential reading list. That's a lot, sure, but it's not everything, and that's the Guide's strength. It doesn't tie you up in knots (even if it does unravel the necessary knots you'll need to know to succeed). Instead, it works with basic principles, encouraging you to just get out there and cast your line--and lot--with enough confidence and skill to begin a relationship that should take you the rest of your life to really understand. --Jeff Silverman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great How-to Book for Fly Fishing.......2006-04-15

This is one of the best books for introducing anyone to the sport of fly fishing, whether the angler wants to shop for equipment at Orvis or Wal-Mart. The information is clearly explained without going into tedious details that novices (and experienced anglers) don't want. Everything is covered here--from rod types to fly lines to casting basics. The excellent graphics are helpful--especially of the knots. Some books have knot instructions that are impossible to follow--"knot" so here! For someone who wants to start fly fishing, this book would make a great start. My only complaint is that the book came out almost 20 years ago; it's time for a new edition. . . . I just read that there's a new edition coming out in a few months. Maybe you want to pre-order that edition. And while you're waiting for that, pick up the "L.L.Bean's Handbook to Fly-Fishing" (color illustrations) and Schreiber's novel, "Life on the Fly."

5 out of 5 stars great book, excellent source for beginners.......2005-03-31

you'll find all the info you need to start flyfishing here. fly's, rods and casting as best you can get from a book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Easy to Read.......2004-06-26

Tom Rosenbauer clearly and concisely covers the basics that a beginning fly fisher needs to know: from the basic gear to casting, to knots to reading trout streams, you will find he covers the basic questions beginners have well. Tom's writing style is fluid and enjoyable which makes learning all the more fun. It's the best book I have read on the basics of fly fishing; after reading it you will certainly feel like you have enough knowledge to get out there and start catching fish. As far as I am concerned, you cant go wrong with any book by Tom!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-11-25

This book is awesome but the pictures could be a little better organized. In addition there are some basics that could be addressed better. tippet, leader, line, backing...show me a simple picture with all these in order so I know what I am taking about at the fly shop without having to re-read the section. Other than that this is a great book for me, a beginner of fly fishing but a seasoned spinner real fisherman.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners........1997-03-04

Rosenbauer's text and the accompanying illustrations provide an excellent introduction to fly fishing. As a beginner, I found most of my questions answered. Also, I found the drawings of the techniques for tying different knots to be a godsend! (I was never a boy scout, and have trouble knotting my tie.) I was a little disappointed that the text had some typos and grammatical errors. However, it was interesting and very helpful nevertheless

5 out of 5 stars the very best of its kind.......2004-08-13

rosenbauer's books are, in my opinion, the very best introductory and intermediate fly fishing books available. this particular book about reading trout streams is an absolulte gem; we learn about different water types, the needs of trout, the relationship between water type and insect activity, etc.

everyone needs to learn to cast, tie knots and identify basic kinds of trout foods; this book will help any fly fisherman better understand where in the water the trout actually hold, how flows and other seasonal changes affect trout habitat, and will eliminate some of the time that we all waste fishing 'dead water.' an excellent read and even better teaching material.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone serious about shotgunning.......2007-06-27

This is the finest shooting resource I've seen since Bruce Bowlen's book:The Orvis Wing-Shooting Handbook (Orvis). My other favorite is the classic: Robert Churchill's Game Shooting as a guide to the instinctive style shooting which I believe works best for walk up style wingshooting. Tom Deck's book is done so well that a person could use it as their exclusive resource for gunfit and shooting technique. It is a nice summary of all of the techniques necessary to successfully employ the "Modified Churchill Method," including the all important gunfit. For a deeper study of that subject, I would suggest: Gunfitting: The Quest for Perfection for Shotguns And Rifles. Tom Deck's book is, however, a wonderful resource for the novice as well as the experienced shotgunner.

5 out of 5 stars The Orvis Wing - Shooting Handbook.......2007-02-14

Great book and a MUST HAVE FOR PHEASANT HUNTERS.

5 out of 5 stars If you get one shotgunning book this is it..........2006-09-06

Excellent for a beginner but I am sure that even a seasoned pro will find good insights here. Pay special attention to the many knowledge "nuggets" that abound in this book. I started using a highlighter on these passages... they are that good!

5 out of 5 stars I've been it doing all wrong.......2005-09-13

I've been hunting dove for years, albeit sparingly each season. This little book definitely showed me the error of my shooting ways, and I'm going to have find some time to shoot some clay pigeons to work on this technique. Don't expect to read this book and think that you can bag a bunch of birds the next day. Bruce Bowlen does a masterful job of describing and explaining this English techique of wing-shooting. It makes perfect sense to use this system for hunting birds, but my body and brain are going to need some time to program it in to where I can shoot this way. For being an average shooter, I'm more confident that I'll be able to bring home quite a few more birds next season, once I get the hang of this technique.

4 out of 5 stars Good advice on developing consistent technique.......2004-11-20

In this useful little book, Bruce Bowlen lays out the English approach to wing-shooting. Many American shotgunners, he points out, are already comfortable with the rifle and thus try to transfer their rifle shooting skills to the shotgun. This is a mistake, he says. Shotgunning is a different animal altogether, relying on the shooter's natural sense of timing and ability to point. The English approach harnesses these instinctive abilities, combining them with solid, consistent technique to produce successful wing-shooting.

The book contains detailed guidelines on every aspect of shooting: stance, lead, follow-through, timing, etc. The chapter on gun fit was a bit tedious, taking up a third of the book. However, I'll probably revisit it next time I buy a shotgun. Overall, Bowlen's advice has been helpful to me and I'm sure I'll return to the book again.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and Informative.......2003-02-25

Great practical advice for advanced and beginning shooters. It's geared more toward the bird hunter than the clay shooter, however it has some great information for clay shhooters as well.

This book is a very informative outline of the life of an insect. It gives specific pictures and examples of what most every fly looks like throughout its metamorphasis stages. I am a beginning fly fisherman and I would like to learn more about what the flies that I use look like. I believe that this book is very relavant to the type of flies that I would use here in the northeast. The way that this book explains the specific differences from fly to fly is amazing. I need to know these type of things to better myself in the art of fly fishing.

5 out of 5 stars illustrated manual on all aspects of fly fishing.......2005-01-26

The visual elements of color photos of fishermen, flies, and fishes, and detailed illustrations of fly-fishing techniques discussed in many of the 34 chapters by expert fly fishermen make this fishing manual particularly informative as well as attractive. The four-page detailed Index in smaller print is another reason for the manual's particular relevance and usefulness for fishermen. The contents and writing evidence that the editor and the several authors know their prospective readers. With their identification with them, editor and authors know the challenges and questions on fly fishermen's minds, and also understand the allure and satisfactions of this sport. In "How Trout Feed," the editor in one of his articles advises readers, "If water temperatures rise above seventy degrees F. in summer, both insect hatches and trout feeding dwindle." Lou Tabory tells "How to Read a Beach" in salt-water fly fishing for bluefish. The first eleven articles are on the general subjects of casting and flies. Subsequent sections deal with fishing for trout, steelhead (salmon), and bass, with a closing section on salt-water fishing.
