Book Description
Loop me in, odd one. The words, spoken in the deep of night by a sleeping child, chill
the young man watching over her. For this was a favorite phrase of Stormy Llewellyn,
his lost love, and Stormy is dead, gone forever from this world. In the haunted halls of
the isolated monastery where he had sought peace, Odd Thomas is stalking spirits of an infinitely darker nature
Through two New York Times bestselling novels Odd Thomas has established himself as one of the most beloved and unique fictional heroes of our time. Now, wielding all the power and magic of a master storyteller at the pinnacle of his craft, Dean Koontz follows Odd into a singular new world where he hopes to make a fresh beginning—but where he will meet an adversary as old and inexorable as time itself.
St. Bartholomew’s Abbey sits in majestic solitude amid the wild peaks of California’s high Sierra, a haven for children otherwise abandoned, and a sanctuary for those seeking insight. Odd Thomas has come here to learn to live fully again, and among the eccentric monks, their other guests, and the nuns and young students of the attached convent school, he has begun to find his way. The silent spirits of the dead who visited him in his earlier life are mercifully absent, save for the bell-ringing Brother Constantine and Odd’s steady companion, the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
But trouble has a way of finding Odd Thomas, and it slinks back onto his path in the form of the sinister bodachs he has met previously, the black shades who herald death and disaster, and who come late one December night to hover above the abbey’s most precious charges. For Odd is about to face an enemy who eclipses any he has yet encountered, as he embarks on a journey of mystery, wonder, and sheer suspense that surpasses all that has come before.

I just love Odd Thomas.......2007-10-10
I fell in love with Odd Thomas with the first book. Now there are three and I loved all of them. Dean Koontz is one of my favorite, but he really got me with this character. I think it got to him, too, as Odd has grown and come back to us in two more books. Will there be more? I will be watching for them.
Brother Odd.......2007-10-05
With a touch of humor and the talent for bring his readers the surreal, Dean Koontz leads us through another adventure of Odd Thomas. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead for our undaunted hero!!
Brother Odd.......2007-09-04
This is probably my least favorite in the ODD series of books. The first ODD book clearly is the best. The second one is pretty good, this is so so. It's a short read for a fat book. The print is large & the lines are spaced apart. Koontz's older works are far superior & well worth reading. Go back 10+ years & read those books, Watchers being a favorite of mine. Brother Odd is a book to borrow from a friend or the library, it's not worth purchasing unless you want it because you already have the other 2.
Brother Odd, Odd Plot.......2007-09-01
This is the first Brother Odd novel I have read. The plot is interesting, albeit very eerie and unusual, involving science and ethics and the existence of God. The plot is resolved in a satisfying manner at the conclusion, but on the way to that conclusion, Mr. Koontz wanders off on tangents, explaining details that are often unrelated to the storyline. The character development is effective. Who could not fall in love with meek and humorous Brother Odd and his ghost companion, Elvis?
It's time for me to give another Brother Odd book a chance.
Good not great.......2007-08-28
Any Koontz novel is worthing reading. Not his best work. Not even his best Odd Thomas book. Of course "Odd Thomas" (the first in series) is pretty hard act to follow. I thought it was better than the second in the series but by no means was it up there with "Intensity" (which may be the best/scarriest book ever written). All in all it's a Dean Koontz book so it better than most out there.
Book Description
Reviving Ophelia meets The Mother- Daughter Book Club in a book that offers a proven model for staying connected through adolescence
There is no comment more troubling to the mother of a young girl than she loves you now, but just wait 'til she's a teenager. Ten years ago, SuEllen Hamkins and Renee Schultz, psychotherapy professionals with a combined forty years' experience and both mothers of then seven-year-old daughters, created The Mother-Daughter Project with several other women in their community, with the hope of disproving this damaging assumption. With their young daughters, the group met regularly to speak frankly about such issues as girls' friendships (and aggression), puberty, the media's influence on their self-image and esteem, drugs, and sexuality.
As their daughters matured, the mothers marveled at the strength and confidence with which the girls thrived through adolescence. The Project had succeeded in creating a haven from the many perils of teen culture. Equally important, it helped the mothers navigate their own fears and concerns about adolescence with integrity and grace.
At once simple and revolutionary, this book details the success of the Mother-Daughter Project's groundbreaking model, providing the reader with a road map for strengthening her bond with her own daughter, and providing strategies for staying close through adolescence and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Useful and Beautiful.......2007-10-09
The Mother-Daughter Project is a most practical, theoretical, and hopeful guide to dealing with our predator culture -- a culture that expects and even thrives upon mothers and daughters becoming separate during the daughter's adolescence. My mother-daughter group, just begun with help from the book contains 11 & 12 year old girls and their mothers and is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic group who have various economic backgrounds. We did one of the exercises ("our perfect day") from the book and it elevated us to a surprising new level, created an introduction to community within the group and highlighted some marvelous differences and similarities between the generations. My own 11-year-old daughter said, "I noticed that everyone in our group had something going for mangoes AND liked climbing...also that we all wanted to get up really early so that we could really live large during the day!"
This is an incredible book for anyone interested in women, girls, psychology, spirituality and community. The extremely readable information about our culture's approach to girls and women and the valuable stories about the mother-daughter pairs in the authors' M-D Project make "The Mother-Daughter Project: How Mother and Daughters Can Band Together, Beat the Odds, and Thrive Through Adolescence" truly a book to read, re-read and USE.
good for rich white people.......2007-09-13
Three years ago, you could not have convinced me that my mother and I would have a functional adult relationship. In addition to a life crisis that brought us back onto speaking terms and into each other's lives, we learned to set aside most of our differences because life is too short to do otherwise. When I heard about The Mother-Daughter Project, a book that promises "a proven model for staying connected through adolescence and beyond," I felt a glimmer of hope that young women would no longer spend their twenties overcoming the verbal scars of youthful wars with our parents. Maybe my expectations were quite high, but this overly self-referential, self-help book in disguise is written in such a fluffy, insulting way that I found it hard to accept any of its legitimate advice.
It should first be noted that the ten-year group experiment on which this book is based took place in greater Massachusetts, where I currently reside. While that doesn't immediately lend itself to a myriad of privileges, two educated, white women wrote this book from their own experience. They do make a cursory acknowledgement that mothering is more than their version of the status quo, but this recognition simply doesn't show through in their analysis or supposedly practical application, and I just can't get down with that kind of written tokenism.
Most helpful for their references to other similar, more groundbreaking works, this is a good book for mothers who literally have no clue about how to start relating to their teenagers. The overly simplistic solutions and embarrassing language do not make it an effective read for teens, however. If my mother had handed me this when I was in middle school, I'd have laughed in her face despite my strong desire to heal our relationship even then. An overly indulgent attempt to debunk myths like the "perfect girl" or the "supermom," this book is mainly a solution for upper class white folks who have a built-in support system ready to consciousness-raise and spend long hours dissecting how to best grow their relationships.
a wonderful resource for parents.......2007-08-31
I think "The Mother-Daughter Project" is a terrific book. I have recommended it to parents that I see in my practice as a child psychiatrist, to friends who have daughters, and to anyone whom I meet who has daughters! I believe this book is a rich tool, from the perspective of understanding and, most beneficially, from the perspective of practice: on how to foster strong, nurturing, and enjoyable bonds between mothers and daughters and between mothers and mothers. The common experiences and challenges that different generations of females encounter in our society, and life itself, as well as the resources needed to meet those challenges, are richly explored in this book through the discussion of the evolution of the mother-daughter group.
With detail and humor, the authors share with the reader the journey of this group of mothers and daughters over 10 years, as they start meeting monthly when the daughters are seven years old and continue up to the time of college. We learn about the very rich array of activities that these very thoughtful and intentional mothers used to educate their daughters about the tasks they will encounter in each coming stage in their development. Age specific challenges to mothers and daughters, together and separately, are covered in an overview level and in the very rich detailed activities the mothers and daughters used to prepare for, practice, and develop the skills and abilities to deal with all that is involved in moving from protected childhood into adulthood. This book is a wonderful resource to all parents-whether or not they are in such groups.
great message for mothers and daughters!.......2007-05-20
I bought this book earlier today and am over halfway through it. I am the mother of two daughters, age 9 & 12. While I wish I had this book five years ago, it doesn't feel like it's too late. A great resource for years to come, with positive self, daughter and relationship building ideas.

There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender. Odd Girl Out begins with the premise that girls are socialized to be sweet with a double bind: they must value friendships; but they must not express the anger that might destroy them. Lacking cultural permission to acknowledge conflict, girls develop what Simmons calls "a hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression."
The author, who visited 30 schools and talked to 300 girls, catalogues chilling and heartbreaking acts of aggression, including the silent treatment, note-passing, glaring, gossiping, ganging up, fashion police, and being nice in private/mean in public. She decodes the vocabulary of these sneak attacks, explaining, for example, three ways to parse the meaning of "I'm fat."
Simmons is a gifted writer who is skilled at describing destructive patterns and prescribing clear-cut strategies for parents, teachers, and girls to resist them. "The heart of resistance is truth telling," advises Simmons. She guides readers to nurture emotional honesty in girls and to discover a language for public discussions of bullying. She offers innovative ideas for changing the dynamics of the classroom, sample dialogues for talking to daughters, and exercises for girls and their friends to explore and resolve messy feelings and conflicts head-on.
One intriguing chapter contrasts truth telling in white middle class, African-American, Latino, and working-class communities. Odd Girl Out is that rare book with the power to touch individual lives and transform the culture that constrains girls--and boys--from speaking the truth. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Dirty looks and taunting notes are just a few examples of girl bullying that girls and women have long suffered through silently and painfully. With this book Rachel Simmons elevated the nation's consciousness and has shown millions of girls, parents, counselors, and teachers how to deal with this devastating problem. Poised to reach a wider audience in paperback, including the teenagers who are its subject, Odd Girl Out puts the spotlight on this issue, using real-life examples from both the perspective of the victim and of the bully.
Customer Reviews:
On the upside..........2007-06-09
What an incredible walk through our nation's schools--though only eye-opening because I didn't realize how prevalent my own experiences were among others. How sad that girlhood aggression has been labeled a "culture". On the upside, that ought to give it the attention that such destructive behavior is due. I know, I know, it's been said before: EVERY girl and her mother needs to read this.
Good to get it out there.......2007-05-02
I think the value in this book is its ablility to open up discussions about this subject. For generations, nothing has been said about it. Parents, teachers, school administrators, nobody wanted to talk about it. Without that discussion, nothing will ever change.
Odd Girl Out is beautifully written, sometimes heart-breaking, often maddening. I would have liked to have seen the author offer more solutions to the problem, but overall, I think it is a very valuable book and would recommend it to anyone with daughters.
Odd Girl Out---the book.......2007-04-15
Great book, very easy to read. Parents and girls should read this.
Interesting interviews, but feels repetitive and incomplete........2007-04-10
In Rachel Simmons' book, "Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls," she introduces us to three hundred girls from thirty schools across the country. Blasting the stereotype that girls are the kinder, gentler sex, Simmons' premise is that girls are taught to "be nice" and to "make friends," and, as a result, are unable to express anger that might destroy the façade of friendship. Because our culture does not grant girls "permission" to confront conflict directly, Simmons asserts, there exists a "hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression" consisting of "backbiting, exclusion, rumors, name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted victims." Simmons remembers how she felt when a third grader named Abby told the other girls not to play with her; she remembers her own responsibility in giving another girl the silent treatment. It is from that base of personal experience that Simmons conducted her interviews.
The book consists of Simmons interviews...many, many interviews. Over time, the interviews begin to seem mind-numbingly similar. Natalie's story, Lisa's story, Molly's story, Dina's story...each story becomes repetitive. At one point, I set the book aside for a week and found that I had lost my place. I attempted to find the exact page where I had stopped reading, but I found that it was impossible to do so. Since none of the stories stood out distinctly in my mind, I gave up my search for the "right" page; I picked a random early chapter that I knew I must have read already and resumed my reading.
I enjoyed reading the book, even given its repetitiveness problems, and with a lifetime of experience being the "odd girl out," I found it somewhat cathartic to read stories of young women who had experienced similar trauma. Simmons does some things well. Her explanation of the devastating impact of girls' aggression is compelling, and she does an excellent job of describing the dynamics of the hidden aggression. In addition, Simmons relates the various interviews in a compassionate and thoughtful manner.
Where she does not succeed, however, is in giving her readers tangible suggestions about ways to address the problems she emphasizes.
Odd Girl Out contains two hundred and seventy pages, but it is only during the last thirty of those pages that Simmons addresses possible solutions to the problems she outlines. In those thirty pages, Simmons tells readers to talk to their daughters, to tell teachers about what is happening, and to make sure that teachers take the problems seriously. Those are reasonable suggestions, but I wanted more. I did not find a plan to keep these things from happening to my young adult daughter in the first place, nor did I find a plan of action in the event these things happen to my daughter. It is not enough to recommend we talk to our daughters and to their teachers - my friends and I could suggest that plan to one another over a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Simmons has made a good first step in raising awareness of the problem. She needed to work harder, though, to provide parents and teachers with skills and with plans for action when facing these issues.
Now I understand why some girls are suddenly so mean!.......2007-03-14
I read this book in preparation for my daughter's middle school years. I can honestly say it helped prepare me the first time she came home in distress over a friendship that had taken a negative turn. It gives insight into what might be going on in a girl's mind when she suddenly starts displaying RA tactics, and the devastating effects it has on both the aggressor and the victim.
My daughter took great comfort from this book as well as the companion book, Odd Girl Speaks Out - they helped her understand her friend's possible motives and gave her some tools to use to turn the situation around. It also helped me open up a dialogue with her school, who were very responsive. RA can be overcome, but you have to educate yourself and your community. Sometimes this has to start with the parent, not the teachers. This book is a fantastic first step.

Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful analysis.......2007-09-24
This is a very worthwhile book that provides a clear and thoughtful investigation of the behavior of forex markets. There are no false notions that reading this book will automatically make you a millionaire. Instead there is an invitation to use these guidelines to do the work of developing your own system for trading. The author provides guidelines and templates that he uses in trading. More importantly, he provides the basis for a trader to construct his or her own system, based on an ongoing analysis of the basic structure of forex trading, and essential observations of price action. He doesn't downplay the extent to which forex price patterns include elements of unpredictability and randomness. However, he shows how one can learn from observation of what is occurring in the present situation as it unfolds to make trades with increased probabilities for success. This approach does not overemphasize technical analysis, but considers technical analysis as a way to gain confirmation of what is being observed. Thus, the reader is invited to build a system that increases probabilities for success while eschewing the false assumption that the future can be predicted from the past.
Not useful at all........2007-07-27
I tried the concept described in this book in my demo a/c (thank god) for almost 1 1/2 month, even though most of the setup described in this or any other book are chosen to curve fit the formula. The results were random, which would have been the same if I had thrown a dice. My advice is to trade by fundamental news and open a hedge position. Being a lonely trader without the knowledge of so called experts or a team of economic research analyst, for a person like me I open both buy and sell position whenever there is a major economic event like interest rate announcement, consumer index etc. I cover the losing position and ride the winning position. After reading many books, attending seminar this is the only thing working for me. By the way most of the TA indicator like MACD, RSI, various moving averages etc. are all lagging indicator. Since history does not predict future why depend on them.
Once again, where is the PROOF that these setups are even remotely profitable?.......2007-07-14
Another forex book with just a bunch of chart patterns that supposedly make money. As usual, no (Omega Trade Station) backtests. I even asked the author for the backtest results, his reply was something like this: "Well just try them [the patterns] and see if they work for you" ?!?!?!
Unfortunalely a lot of newcomers and newbies are clapping and praising this book, even though those people have no way of knowing if these patterns can pass a test of only 200 daytrades, let alone 1,000 historical daytrades!
Even more disturbing is the fact that the author shows you a pattern and the buy sell entry/exit, but then a few pages later, he shows you the same exact pattern and tells you that you can also do the reverse ?!?!?
In other words the pattern is supposed to make money no matter how you trade it?!?!
So Mr. Toshchakov, we are still waiting for your backtest results. Show us that these patterns make money (if any).
Incomprehensible and utterly worthless for actual trading.......2007-05-18
I assume most of the glowing reviews of Toshchakov's inscrutable mish-mash are shilling for the publisher. This book makes problematic systems based upon crude algorithms, simple break-outs, and even astrology look positively brilliant by comparison. Without a doubt, this is one of the most useless trading manuals ever devised and represents a total waste of the reader's money. The highly-touted, ostensibly KISS templates that constitute the system's heart are so complex, obscure, and hedged about by contingent factors as to be absolutely impossible to identify, much less utilize. Even the author's "commsense" advice on trading trendlines is facile garbage for anyone who has more than a few week's experience on the FOREX. I feel sorry for those who purchase this volume in the honest hope of learning some viable trading techniques: their intense disappointment -- and monetary loss -- is guaranteed.
Wow - its the first Forex book that i did not regret buying.......2007-05-13
This book is a must have for forex traders. Even if it require alot of practice to be comfortable applying the techniques, you must read.

Book Description
Every so often a character so captures the hearts and imaginations of readers that he seems to take on a life of his own long after the final page is turned. For such a character, one book is not enough—readers must know what happens next. Now Dean Koontz returns with the novel his fans have been demanding. With the emotional power and sheer storytelling artistry that are his trademarks, Koontz takes up once more the story of a unique young hero and an eccentric little town in a tale that is equal parts suspense and terror, adventure and mystery—and altogether irresistibly odd.
We’re all a little odd beneath the surface. He’s the most unlikely hero you’ll ever meet—an ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there’s so much more to any of us than meets the eye—and that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the dead—it’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. That’s the way Odd sees it and that’s why he’s won hearts on both sides of the divide between life and death.
A childhood friend of Odd’s has disappeared. The worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body, encounters an enemy of exceptional cunning, and spirals into a vortex of terror. Once again Odd will stand against our worst fears. Around him will gather new allies and old, some living and some not. For in the battle to come, there can be no innocent bystanders, and every sacrifice can tip the balance between despair and hope. Whether you’re meeting Odd Thomas for the first time or he’s already an old friend, you’ll be led on an unforgettable journey through
a world of terror, wonder and delight—to a revelation that can change your life. And you can have no better guide than Odd Thomas.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great series.......2007-09-11
Love the Odd Thomas books and hope hope hope Dean Koontz comes out with more!
The Second Chapter of Odd.......2007-09-11
First of all, don't read this book unless you have already read Odd Thomas as it contains spoilers for the first book. Just as we don't read the last page first and first page last, or anywhere in between, we also should read books in order for the sake of the story :)
Forever Odd is a good book. With his usual artful style, Koontz flips your emotions as if on a remote control. You feel the fear of the situation, the tension, the thrill, and then flip right back into laughter... and awe. Koontz can tug at your heart strings, but leave you with enough humor that you aren't completely devestated and can smile in spite of it all.
Odd Thomas is a special character. He is one we should all strive to emulate. Compassionate, intelligent, humble, yet confident. And he is surrounded by special people, although they play far less of a role in this book than the previous book.
Not as good as the first, but a close second. Well worth the read and the space on your bookshelf.
Not as good as Odd Thomas.......2007-08-29
This book is average at best. It was a disapointment compared to Odd Thomas. Seemed like he was cashing in on the success of the first one.
Forgettable.......2007-08-25
This mildly entertaining sequel to Odd Thomas is told in the voice of the title character, a lonely and gentle man who can see and interact with the dead, even if they cannot speak back. When the novel opens, Odd Thomas is confronted with yet another dead person, this time the adoptive father of his close friend, Danny. When Odd follows him back to the house, he discovers a grisly scene. To complicate matters, Danny, who suffers from brittle bone disease, is missing, and an (overly) mysterious woman calls Odd to taunt him. Odd is haunted by his past heroic deeds and the loss he experiences as a result. The only dead person he wants to see eludes him.
While the final scenes of the book are suspenseful, the novel suffers from Odd's childlike narrative voice and a failure to make the reader care deeply about the characters. This makes the novel forgettable once the last page has been read. Koontz is good enough to know how to keep the reader turning pages; however, this time his story is too thin and, in some ways, self-indulgent. I could imagine Koontz chuckling over his prose as he reincarnated Elvis again and again. I would have rather done the smiling myself.
Certainly those who loved Odd Thomas should read this novel, as Koontz will, in all likelihood, return to this character. Maybe the next novel will be better.
Not as good as the first one........2007-08-09
This is a much simpler story. The original characters are there, but you feel the Author's angst to get the sequel completed more than the peril of the characters. The first book "Odd Thomas" is required reading before "Forever Odd".

Book Description
The national bestseller Odd Girl Out exposed a hidden culture of cruelty that had always been quietly endured by American girls. As Rachel Simmons toured the country, these girls found their voices and spoke to her about their pain. They wanted to talk-and they weren't the only ones. Mothers, teachers, counselors, young professional women, even fathers, came to Rachel with heart-wrenching personal stories that could no longer be kept secret.
Here, Rachel creates a safe place for girls to talk, rant, sound off, and find each other. The result is a collection of wonderful accounts of the inner lives of adolescent girls. Candid and disarming, creative and expressive, and always exceptionally self-aware, these poems, songs, confessions, and essays form a journal of American girlhood. They show us how deeply cruelty flows and how strongly these girls want to change.
Odd Girl Out helped girls find their voices; Odd Girl Speaks Out helps them tell their stories.
I'm always the odd girl out
No one talks to me
I try to be friendly and speak out
But I'm invisible, see?
You know, gossip is a natural thing in high school. I'm one of those girls that will
do it right in front of you. I'll whisper at my friends and look at you the whole time.
Then we'll all cut up laughing. You know we're talking about you.
My best friend and I started being friends with this other girl. But she was fat. It was hard because she always wanted to go down the slide second and she would crush us. We didn't want to tell her she was fat, so we decided to drop her. Her mother called my mother and
told her we were being mean. But we just couldn't be friends with her anymore.

Don't be a parent who doesn't get it..........2007-07-10
It is inevitable that our daughters will experience some sort of emotional bullying. Prepare yourself and the ones you love by reading this book and understanding the dynamic.
This book helped me to see how my natural reactions
"Well Ill just speak to her parents" WRONG
"Honey Just talk with her and it will work out" WRONG
"She is such a rotten kid! How can she do that?" WRONG
WRONG WRONG WRONG
Sigh.
It hasn't changed since we were young- its only better enabled by technology. In any case- information is the best weapon. Read this with your daughter before it happens- you may be able to avoid heartache.
Helpful conversation starter.......2007-05-21
This book was recomended by my 6th grader's school counselor after she started making some questionable friend choices. We moved to a new area about a year ago and my two middle school daughters went from a very conservative charter school to a tight knit small town public school. My youger (6th grader) daughter has had a more difficult time adjusting and this helped a lot. My older daughter has always been the over-achiever, and expects the same of her sister. This book hleped a lot even within their relationship as I would consider my older child a "queen bee". This book helped my daughter open up to me more because it was easier for her to start a converstaion about something she read in the book, that happened to someone else, and it would lead us into things she is or has been going through. I read Queen Bees and Wannabes while she was reading this and it seemed to work out well, gave us a common thread and set the stage for planned conversations, something difficult to do well with girls this age.

First off, I wanted to hook you up with the author's official site.
I think that this book is a MUST READ for any 8-12th grader in America! This coupled with the first book, Odd Girl Out coincide with the angst of being a young woman in this day and age. Thank God I don't have to be a teenager now!
I have used this text in my book club and it sparks great discussions and is a stepping stone to creating your own student anthology. It works well with tons of films and books, like Mean Girls, 13, or Speak. I can't even think of all the LIFETIME movies that coincide with this book as well.
Odd Girl Speaks Out: Girls Write about Bullies, Cliques, .......2007-04-01
This is a GREAT book. My daughter who is 14 could really relate to it. As a mom it really gave me an insight to what she has to deal with at school.
A teen's perspective on an almost four star book.......2005-06-18
"Odd Girl Speaks Out" is a book of short stories by teen and preteen girls about their experiences with relationships between other girls. Opening the beginning of each section is commentary by the editor relating to what the section will be about.
What's Good-
1) Certain authors make powerful statements of self realization at the end of their stories. Ex-In "Who My Friends Really Were", the author states, "No longer do I judge or label...And most importantly I want everyone to know that no matter how bad things seem, they do get better...I got better." In "I Was the One Word that Everyone Fears: Alone", the author says, "Through my experiences I became a stronger person. I learned so much about myself and about others."
2) Some authors prefer to express themselves in poetry. Their poetry tells a story just like those who write in article format but is more direct. Those who like to read stories in article format but also enjoy poetry might find this refreshing (like I did).
3) The editor offers commentary about each of the sections of the book and some of it is helpful. Ex-In a snippet about talking to a friend about a problem, she offers three tips definitely worth using: Listen, Stay with the issue, and if need be, Apologize. In a snippet about losing trust in relationships with girls, she says not to give up on girls forever.
4) Certain stories can be inspiration for performing. Ex-"Just to Make You Happy" is written in monologue form and with a few changes is perfect for a drama performance.
What's Not So Good-
1) The story entitled "Friend Trouble". It feels like the whole story is the author complaining about her two friends for various reasons without offering any substance. Also, instead of making up names for her two friends she refers to them as "my skinny friend" and "my fat friend" and herself as "average fat". This is one story I don't recommend reading at all.
2) The editor mentions that for some girls who are constantly picked on, moving can not only be a fresh start but they can also become more popular. What she doesn't stress enough is that if those constantly picked on girls are carrying around heavy grudges, they still might have problems.
3) Sometimes the editor puts too much of herself into her commentary. She mentions a few experiences she had with her own friendships and at one point when she was talking about parents she wrote down what they said and "responded" back. In a book where girls are supposed to speak for themselves, it would be a good idea if she backed off and offered the advice with no emotional attachment.
Final Recommendations-
All in all this is a decent book with decent stories, but I recommend scanning through it first before buying.
Book Description
Millions of people around the world know Chuck Norris as the star of more than 20 motion pictures, including "Delta Force," "Missing in Action," and "Return of the Dragon." Millions more know him as a martial arts expert, the only man in the Western Hemisphere to hold an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master in Tae Kwon Do. And then there are others who know him from his eight seasons on CBS's longest running series, "Walker, Texas Ranger."
What many don't know is that Chuck Norris is a sincere Christiana man whose faith plays a role in everything he does. Against All Odds is an inspirational story of how Norris overcame abject poverty from childhood, the effects of his father's alcoholism and desertion of the family, and his own shyness and lack of strength and ability early in his life. Norris writes candidly about how he was able to overcome such obstacles in his lifegiving full credit to God.

Inspiring!.......2007-05-16
"Against All Odds" is an inspirational and very enjoyable book! It's full of many interesting stories and therefore, it's very easy to read. Chuck Norris' story is motivation to everyone to set goals, visualize the goals and work hard to achieve them. His career makes for a great story, especially hearing about his supportive mother who always told him: "God has plans for you". She was right! The book is full of many celebrity stories, too! From Bruce Lee to Johnny Carson to Bob Barker and Steve McQueen. I wish the book was longer. I hated to see it end. Also, Chuck shares his religious beliefs and his wonderful marriage and children. I have written down his quote: "Positive thinking gets positive results and negative thinking gets negative results". Chuck Norris is a very positive and inspiring person! I highly recommend this great book! You'll love it!
Go Chuckie!.......2007-03-30
Great bio. I usually don't read bios, but made an exception for Chuck Norris and for Barry Manilow. Also read Doreen Virtue's bio because it was included in one of her angel books.
That said, Chuck's bio is about overcoming obstacles and helping to make the world a better place. I wanted to read his story because I have always liked his movies and got really into the "Walker Texas Ranger" series. I really liked the positive aspects and messages, and the included spiritualism, in the series. I also liked the way the show included respect for and appreciation of the path and knowledge of the American Indian.
Chuck's bio was very interesting and uplifting and included his beginnings through the fairly current times. There are also old through current photos. It's great to read about a celeb that has his head on straight when you see so much tabloid stuff in the supermarkets. It's also great to read about somebody who moves forward in a positive manner to 1)accomplish things, and 2)help others. (No, I don't buy the tabloids anymore, but you cannot help to see the headlines when you're in line to buy your crabmeat in Maryland.)In my opinion, celebs have a big responsibility to the people who look to them as role models, especially the younger people. I am always happy to see a celeb show a positive image to those who would be influenced by him/her.
Inspirational for anyone who reads this book.......2006-12-28
I find Chuck Norris's story amazing because no matter what anyone else said he worked towards and achieved his goals. An interesting concept of this is how he always shows respect and a smile on his face to everyone he meets, even people who scower at him.
He does this because its a proven fact that if you fight someone's negative attitude with more negativity, nothing will get solved and most likely there will be arguments or maybe even fights. This is one of the many lessons you can learn out of this book, go buy it today. I knew I could learn something out of it and I have learned a lot. I'm glad I bought this book.

Book Description
“The dead don't talk. I don't know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different.
A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.
Today is August 14.
In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares—and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

Great Koontz Novel!.......2007-10-09
I loved this book! I think Dean Koontz is a great writer and I generally enjoy reading all of his novels. The end had me in tears.
Not for me.......2007-10-05
This was my first Dean Koontz book, and I was pretty disappointed given the rave reviews I have heard about him. I am not saying he is a bad writer by any means, but it turned me off to his books.
In this book I felt like I had to walk a mile to get 50 feet of story. He seemed to keep going on and on with descriptions of things that had no significance to the story. My main issue was his use of dialog, I'm sorry but people just dont talk like that. Let alone a couple of 20 year olds in some podunk town. The dialog between Odd and his girlfriend was very unrealistic and distracting. He is a great writer, but as said in my title, just not for me.
Refreshing.......2007-09-30
Odd Thomas is one of those rare books that artfully marry suspense, humor and writing as cripse as a new morning into one perfect package. Told in a pleasant first-person voice, the story unfolds to reveal a remarkably human character who can see the dead, but not talk to them. There is no pretense here; Odd tries to stop tragedy before it happens yet makes the mistakes that anyone else in his place might do. His tender relationship with his girlfriend, Stormy, and the harrowed and strained moments with his parents are perhaps some of the best moments modern novels can provide.
Okay Book.......2007-09-16
I listened to the audio book and the actor did a great job. Odd Thomas starts off intriging and amusing. As the story progresses , I have a difficult time maintaining interest in the story. I wish Koone's character Odd Thomas had more encounters with the dead.Odd Thomas is a good character, but I didn't care for the plot.
Another Koontz Masterpiece!.......2007-09-11
If you are not already a fan of Dean Koontz, you will be soon. His books are thoughtful, well constructed, intelligent, with likable characters and unexpected twists.
Odd Thomas is no exception. Probably one of his most likable characters to date, and that is saying a lot. Although I enjoyed the book from the beginning, I don't think I became emotionally invested until somewhere in the middle. It creeps up on you. Then all of a sudden you find yourself scared that something bad will happen to Odd, or to one of his friends.
I can't really comment too much on this book without giving something away, which I abhor doing. Once again Koontz takes us out of the mainstream, and makes up his own rules along the way. Read it for yourself, but make sure you have the other 2 books ready to jump into when you are done.

my only poker book.......2007-07-08
re-read this all the time. addresses only 'limit' games and i only play 'on-limit' and free-rolls. think it provides a good 'basic TIGHT strategy'. he addresses bluffing but it didn't 'stick'. like the charts alot! guess i'm old-school but did find the use of 'she, her' a little annoying. still don't understand 'raising for a free card'. lol
all the best,

Good.......2007-06-27
This is a great book if yuor are into the mathematical aspects of hold'em. ALthough there are some good cencepts for those are less concerned it's main focus is on math. This book also explains outs and non-outs and how to calculate pot odds based on these as well as based on what your opponents cards are (if you are able to read hands well enough).
Best Explanation of Poker Strategy.......2007-02-24
This book is my favorite Hold 'Em book of all time for one simple reason. Every piece of advice it gives is backed up with one or more concrete examples of that principle in a game scenario as well as a mathematical proof of why that strategy is ultimately profitable in the long run. There are thousands of possible scenarios in poker. Having an expert tell me to throw away King-Queen offsuit in early position does me no good if I don't know why. I either won't remember, will misapply that information, or at the very least won't encounter that exact situation at the table where an understanding of the reasoning behind the advice might help me apply the same principle to a similar although slightly different scenario. This is where Yao as an author shines. This book will take you a bit longer than most other Hold 'Em books to get through but it's well worth the trip. If you want to skip over the mathematical parts, the writing itself is enough to stand on its own. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to deepen their ability to play Hold 'Em strategically. It's probably not the best first book if you've never read any book about the game before but a great second or third book - highly recommended.

In the wake of the success of The MacGregor Brides and The MacGregor Grooms, New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts has repackaged and reissued the sagas of earlier generations, beginning with Serena and Caine, daughter and son of family patriarch Daniel MacGregor. Daniel's romantic machinations embroil Serena and Caine with another brother and sister team, Justin and Diana Blade. In Playing the Odds, Comanche gambler Justin Blade finds himself on a vacation cruise to the Bahamas where he is instantly attracted to a violet-eyed casino dealer. Only later does he learn that the lissome Serena is one and the same as the much-degreed Rena MacGregor, daughter of his longtime silent business partner, Daniel MacGregor. Serena makes it her practice to never get involved with gamblers, but the predatory gaze of Justin Blade steals her breath and steels her resolve to ignore his overtures. When Justin makes her an offer she can't refuse--the position of casino manager in his Atlantic City hotel-casino--Serena finds herself drawn to the man who worked his way up from nowhere, never swerving in his pursuit of financial success and possession of Serena. In this contemporary drama, the house (and the heart) always wins! Once settled as Justin's partner in business and in life, Serena invites Justin's sister Diana to visit. To Diana, Justin is the beloved older brother who abandoned her 20 years earlier, after their mother's death, leaving Diana to be raised by her cold Aunt Adelaide who demanded absolute obedience from her. Now a Harvard-educated lawyer in Boston, Diana is a cool operator, her emotions packed tightly away, until Caine MacGregor, her new sister-in-law's brother and infamous rogue of Harvard Law's ivied halls, greets her at the airport on her visit to get to know the brother she loved so long ago. Diana finds herself in turmoil, trying to deal with her hurt and anger toward her brother and the attraction that she feels for Caine who just happens to be near whenever Diana's well-guarded shell cracks. Caine works inexorably to overcome the much-exaggerated tales of his law school peccadilloes, slowly changing Diana's mind about his playboy reputation and teaching her to trust her heart and him. No one builds romantic tension better than Nora Roberts; even the second (or third or fourth) reading is every bit as exciting as the first! --Alison Trinkle

Tempting Fate

McGregors series.......2007-09-29
Have read all of the McGregors books, loved the series, look forward to more from Nora Roberts, would recommend to everyone who is a romantic at heart to read about the McGregors.
The MacGregors are the best...........2007-05-22
family I have read. I love the way Serena was able to handle Justin yet there were times Justin was able to handle Serena. They make one of the perfect couples I have read. Daniel (Serena and Caine's Dad) is the funniest dad I have ever read. He is all about family and wants grandbabies to bounce on his knee, Anna frets!!!. Diana and and Caine's story was great too. If you dont know, Diana and Justin are brother and sister and havent seen each other in about 15yrs so Serena askes Diana to come to The Commache and meet her and see Justin. She comes even though I dont think she wants to but Caine says she is curious. I agree. They both are a stuborn couple and are not afraid to admit that Diana is afraid to admit she loves him even though Caine admit is first. I am always in the mood for a argument and theirs is just as good, you always find out more about the couple that way. I cant wait to read Alan-Grants story. I have read the Macgregors so many times that creases in the page. Love Them...
IRISH BLOOD .......2007-03-12
THIS BOOK IS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND CAPTIVATING FROM BEGINNING UNTIL THE END . THE AUTHOR NORA ROBERTS IS ABLE TO SHOW US WHAT IS THE REAL MEANING OF IRISH PRIDE AND ALSO THEIR FAMILY VALUES WHICH I PERSONNALLY APPRECIATE A LOT . READING THIS BOOK ALSO GAVE ME A BETTER INSIGHT ON THE MORALS OF HOW CLANS USED TO OPERATE FOR THE MCGREGORS CLAN IS A FANTASTIC ONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY WHERE LOVE AND RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER IS A DAILY HABIT . THIS BOOK ALSO ALLOWED TO UNDERSTAND AND KNOW BETTER WHAT I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO IN A FAMILY TO BE BUILT . IT IS A ROMANTIC BOOK BUT SO WELL WRITTEN THAT THE STORIES OTHER THAN THE LOVE PART ARE ALSO CATCHY.
The MacGregors: Serana ~ Caine.......2007-02-01
