5 out of 5 stars Art and Ecology.......2006-07-23

Suzi Gablik's Conversations Before the End of Time is a collection of interviews with artists and others about the human caused ecological crisis currently taking place on this planet and in particular the reaction in the art and intellectual world to this crisis. It is not easy to talk about this subject, and some may find this book disturbing for that reason. Contemplating our own individual mortality is difficult enough, and that is done in a cultural context that supports the process and imbues it with meaning. A good deal of the meaning in personal mortality comes from the fact that there will be posterity. The End of Time postulated in Gablik's book is unthinkable because it precludes this meaning. The format of the book and Gablik's choice of subjects for her interviews carry out the purpose of the book beautifully. I found the interview with Christopher Manes on Homo-centrism of art to be particularly enlightening. How can we appreciate the magnitude of our destructive actions if all we talk about is ourselves?

1 out of 5 stars Dark Arts.......2005-04-19

This book confirms an observation of mine; that contemporary art is the expression of a politically liberal world view, deeply pessimistic about humanity, and driven by an unwitting self-loathing. I'm sorry she and her friends see things this way. Much of our world is created by the way we view it. This Gablik creation is dark indeed. I would have much greater sympathy if it wasn't so self-inflicted. The world is what you make it.

5 out of 5 stars Challenges "tight" artworld; criticism of Western lifestyles.......2002-03-22

I found her choices of who she interviewed to well-round her theme (Leo Castelli, The Guerrilla Girls, those who study human behavior, environmentalists, etc.) Leo Catelli developed his fame with avant-garde artists. Artists which could be labeled as aesthetic artists. Castelli discusses the 1993 Whitney Biennial as a change of guard between aesthetic art and a more social art. Sure there are gray areas. What is avant-garde today? Does it exist today? Are we borrowing from those before us more than ever?
In this book, thoughtful people explore questions that the comfortable and apathetic will not. Questions about squeezing everything out of everything.....art, the environment, community.... She brings out how most art is for only a select and priviledged few due to the way Western Cilvilization exists now.
Some of the views might seem a bit extreme, but after all, it is the extremists on both sides who shape the future. Suzi Gablik interjects that the strongest(industrial/polluting/rich) extremists might be winning today. I think this book suggests that some artists are saying we should care about each other by connecting more closely to each other and the resources we live with.
Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian, the Bauhaus school and many other thinkers stated these similar things some 90 years ago.
This book restates this modified theme today. This is a very important book.

1 out of 5 stars A promising collection of art dialogues disappoints...
.......1998-04-01

Suzi Gablik promises a thoughtful collection of discussions with various artists and critics regarding the relationship of art with life and spirituality. Unfortunately, in each section (the book is written in dialogue form) she directs the conversation towards her own personal extreme apocolyptic environmental worldview.

In those dialogues where the participant agrees with her viewpoint, they happily conclude that a highly politicized, non-traditional art world is the desired aim. But in those conversations where the participant doesn't happen to see the Earth on the verge of environmental breakdown, the conversation seems to break down. Gablik seems so entrenched within this worldview that she is unable to understand other views.

In one instance, a critic used as an example the changes that we have undergone in the development from a society of hunter-gatherers to our present modern society. He made the seemingly obvious point that today our immediate survival is not as at risk now as it was when each day's food depended on that day's hunt.

Gablik seemed shocked that he did not see the Earth on the verge of an environmental apocalypse, meaning that she feels that our immediate survival is very much at risk.

This is not even a the classic liberal versus conservative argument regarding the role of art and aesthetics. That dialogue would have been productive. Rather, the author consistantly focuses on her own personal biases, leading to disappointing results.

Lawrence M. Krauss's publishing record reveals his knowledge of dark matter, cosmic strings, baryon number violations at the electroweak scale -- and the mysterious, sometimes bogus TV "science" that the Star Trek generation cut its teeth on. Krauss's previous book, The Physics of Star Trek, was readable, educational, and clever, never talking down to the layman or trivializing physics.

In this equally amusing companion volume, Krauss analyzes more science in Star Trek and the next generation of sci-fi movies and TV shows. Can telekinesis exist? How about ESP? Like Fox Mulder of The X-Files, we want to believe, and Krauss finesses these issues, allowing, after much discussion of gravity and electromagnetic forces, that "there is little doubt that undiscovered forces...exist at some level." He's a bit harder on the alien spacecraft of the movie Independence Day, arguing that objects so large inside our atmosphere would exert a downward pressure of 450 pounds per square inch, and that the saucers could therefore crush skyscrapers simply by hovering over them. "Of course," quips Krauss, "this wouldn't have made for spectacular previews of coming attractions." Whether you're a Trekkie, an X-phile, or a serious student of physics, you'll like this book.

Book Description

In the bestselling The Physics of Star Trek, the renowned theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss took readers on an entertaining and eye-opening tour of the Star Trek universe to see how it stacked up against the real universe. Now, responding to requests for more as well as to a number of recent exciting discoveries in physics and astronomy, Krauss takes a provocative look at how the laws of physics relate to notions from our popular culture -- not only Star Trek, but other films, shows, and popular lore -- from Independence Day to Star Wars to The X-Files.

5 out of 5 stars His convincing arguments against ESP, time travel and aliens visitations are based on reality.......2006-11-11

As a lifelong science fiction fan and one well-schooled in science, I enjoy the stories while acknowledging the holes in the scientific aspects. In this book, Krauss does an excellent job of explaining the scientific realities in the context of some of the wonders we see on the screen. Star Trek, in all of its many manifestations, is the primary focus. He also discusses the "X-files" television show and the movie "Independence Day."
One of the interesting points concerns the alien ships in "Independence Day." The mother ship was so massive that its mere presence would have had a significant affect on the rotation of the Earth and its orbit around the sun. This would have caused a dramatic climate change, which all by itself could have defeated the human race.
Krauss also explores the potential for ESP and telekinesis based on our current understanding of physics. While he acknowledges that we almost certainly do not know of all the forces operating in the universe, he uses the conservation of energy to predict how powerful the motive force for ESP would have to be. He puts forward convincing arguments that the energy expended in carrying out such actions is large enough that it could not escape detection. This is a strong argument against ESP, because that means the only argument in favor is to claim the existence of a force that cannot be detected by our current instrumentation. That is a very difficult argument to make, but it is an even more difficult one to refute.
This is one of those books that I started one afternoon and finished the next day, reading nothing else in between. As Carl Sagan used to say, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." If we assume that the laws of physics are universal and we understand them to a high level of accuracy, then his arguments are overwhelmingly convincing.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond star trek by Lawrence M. Krauss.......2005-08-28

Very entertaing book. Anyone with a love for science and Star trk will enjoy this book. Highly recommended

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original.......2003-10-15

This book expands on the theme of the "Physics of Star Trek": namely drawing upon the science of today to ponder the validity and feasibility of the sci-fi science. Like its predecessor though somewhat to a lesser extent, this book suffers from a lack of vision by adhering to today's understanding of science (see my review for that book). The end result is still a readable and nice introduction to important questions in modern physics using science fiction as an example.

I found this book somewhat less interesting than its predecessor. For one thing there is some repetition with "The Physics of Star Trek". Further, the most interesting issues have already been addressed in the earlier book, leaving the crumbs to this one. So, if you have read the first book, you might not be as excited by this one. Nevertheless it is still an enjoyable read.

A word of caution, despite the "Star Trek" in the title, there is very little Star Trek in this book. Instead, the author expands the comparison to cover other cinematic shows like "X-files" or "Independence Day" (the "Beyond" part of the title). While this is OK and does not diminish the interest of the book, pure Star Trek fans who buy this book expecting to read about Star Trek will be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars BEYOND BEAM ME UP SCOTTY...............2003-07-22

Author Laurence Krauss is Chairman of the Department of Physics at Case Western Reserve. He is also the author of several other books including THE PHYSICS OF STAR TREK. This book explores such topics as alien invasions, time travel, quantum reality and more in movies like X-Files, Star Wars, Indepedence Days and in other aspects of popular culture and life today. Divided into 15 chapters at 190 pages (including index) it's a fairly easy read or maybe you'd like to listen on the audio version from Amazon.
It would have been great to include a glossary since those of us that don't have a physics graduate degree might enjoy glancing at that prior to reading the text. As science fiction quickly becomes science fact, this book belongs on any techie's shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but first book was much better.......2002-01-03

I am a big fan of books that use science to critically examine the (im)possibilities of Science Fiction. Lawrence Krauss did an excellent job in his 'Physics of Star Trek' book, but I am much less pleased by this sequel.

Because this book is not focussed on one SF series, it lacks the structure of the first book. Krauss seems to pick out at random some elements of science commonly used in science fiction and again at random refers to some movies or books using them.

While his analyses are usually sound and well written, they lack the thoroughness of the analyses in the first book. Where in the first book he examined every conceivable scientific road to make an SF phenomenon / machine work before considering it impossible, he now seems to stick to one or two explanations and when these don't work he discards the phenomenon / machine (e.g. faster than light travel or ESP). This leaves the reader with a lot of "Yes, but.." and "What if"'s.

In addition, I found the very frequent referrences to other esteemed scientists who are all geniuses and are all performing ground breaking science becoming irritating after a while. A book like this should focus on the science at hand and not the people that perform it. Of course scientists deserve due credit for their achievements, but people shouldn't be presented like they are the best thing that has happened to this world since the invention of toilet paper. Such praise is always subjective and does not belong in a book that attempts to be objective.

A tragic narrative journey through a New York wasteland and a warning to a city and a world in danger, Noelle Kocot's third book has the prophetic immediacy of Ginsberg's "Howl" and the urgent clarity of Langston Hughes. As a poet who has achieved success in the realms of both grassroots popularity and national critical attention, Kocot is poised to claim her place as America's boldest new poetic voice.

Award-winning poet Noelle Kocot presents Poem for the End of Time and Other Poems, an anthology of free-verse poetry that dwells upon the difficulties that beset one in the different phases of existence. At types evoking a hypnotic repeat phrasing, at times evoking raw emotion through cursing, and at times mournful in its reminiscence of loss, Poem for the End of Time and Other Poems is an experience to shake the reader, and prompt reconsideration of the truly big questions. A distinguished veteran of science fiction, Frederik Pohl, was one of the Futurians, a New York City club of the 1930s and 40s that included Isaac Asimov. Author of The Other End of Time and The World at the End of Time, his latest novel features Dan Dannerman, a poorly paid government agent in the not-too-distant future. Dannerman discovers aliens on an abandoned space station and is drawn into a conflict that encompasses the universe. According to one of its protagonists, the war Dannerman blunders into centers on what "ordinary people have been used to calling 'Heaven.'" A sequel is promised.

3 out of 5 stars The Other End of a Conclusion.......2007-04-02

Personally, I think it's difficult to make much out of Frederik Pohl's THE OTHER END OF TIME largely because, come the inevitable Twilight Zone-ish conclusion in the last few paragraphs -- the book serves essentially as a 300-plus-page set-up for novels that could follow. As a result, there's very little here to sink your science fiction teeth into, despite the author's briefly informative afterward dealing with the scientific theory of tachyons AND his interpretation of them in the novel.

There are so many elements presented in OTHER END that Pohl lays out asking the reading to take for granted: the leader "adventurer," Dan Dannerman, is a secret agent for a national organization, though the United States appears to have been broken up into individual countries; Dannerman's background and behavior certainly don't indicate that he possesses any grand training to serve as a secret agent, as he's always arguing with his handling about the best way to go about doing his job; the dissolution of the United States is never touched upon or given any explanation; and the "evil alien presence" of the Horch are never given any sincere, straight-forward motivation ... indeed, one could argue that they're never truly shown as being evil. Other ideas are given some exploration, but due to the book's inability to reach a conclusion (or, at least, a satisfying one)it's difficult to offer up more than a few casual observations on the main topics. Lesser topics -- cloning, alien abduction, group/think -- are given far more face time, but only the struggle for personal identity in an age of duplicating humans is truly given enough print space to elevate the book above average.

As Pohl was in his earlier works of GATEWAY and BEYOND THE BLUE EVENT HORIZON, the author seems overtly fixated on "commerce" and "capitalism." His identifiable characters -- Robinette Broadhead in GATEWAY and Pat/Patzy/Patrice in OTHER END -- are visibly obsessed with attaining wealth. To my surprise, Pohl never seems to comment on their desires for riches, though, and, a sad consequence, these largely interesting female leads tend to appear as little more than shallow gold-diggers. If there is an obvious message here about the pursuit of money, then I have to admit I'm missing it.

Still, there are large passages here that are truly vintage Pohl. His observations about his characters in the world they inhabit are worth exploration; I just wish THE OTHER END OF TIME truly explained how "time" factored into his grand equation. When the back of the book promises "the only sure thing is that the winners will rule eternity at the Other End of Time" yet delivers no conclusion nor any involvement with eternity whatsoever, the whole tour de force ends up being a tour de farce.

3 out of 5 stars Serviceable, but not Pohl's best.......2007-02-28

"The Other End of Time" is a compentent work of alien contact and abduction, readable but derivative. The characters are generally one-dimensional, unlike those of his far-better "Gateway." Hey, it's the horny guy! There's the rich woman! And the cop! The setting is well thought-out, but inconsistently treated. And while the plot is generally interesting, it is slow and badly-paced. I suspect a much-edited one-book version of the Eschaton series would be a much better read. I enjoyed this book well enough, but not well enough to pick up the sequel. The Heechee saga is a much better introduction to Pohl's work, for those who have not read this author's books.

1 out of 5 stars My rating is really -5 (negative 5).......2006-11-13

Really, Amazon should have ratings from -5 to 5. This book is unreadable and insulting to your intelligence. Has nothing to do with SCIENCE fiction

5 out of 5 stars Different, Solid and Enjoyable .......2006-09-28

I give THE OTHER END OF TIME (1996) 4.5 stars. The book offers a variety of different kinds of plot and technology angles. For example, the method of star travel, in which beings are transported using Tachyons (faster than light particles).

The various kinds of aliens (a dozen or so), and the descriptions of them are interesting enough - not top notch, but interesting. The first part of the book is a kind of slow-moving "spy thriller", but the last part of the book turns into an "ordeal", once the main characters are snatched by the aliens. One kind of alien technology lets the humans be "copied", and this leads to a number of interesting scenarios, with copies meeting themselves, and so forth.

While I wouldn't say this is a book you can't put down, it certainly is a book that I always enjoyed picking up. I'm looking forward to starting the 2nd book in this series.

2 out of 5 stars Surprisingly bad.......2006-05-20

Suspiciously similar in some ways to Wall Around A Star, which I found so boring I couldn't finish, this simply wasn't very good at all. Long, boring, surprisingly crude writing. Pohl's capable of great work but this isn't it. I sincerely hope that this was just a bad book and not a harbinger of further decline.

2 out of 5 stars Pre-trib propaganda.......2007-04-09

Just more pre-trib propaganda. There is not a single verse in the Bible that says the Rapture will be after the Tribulation. In fact Jesus told us the very opposite (read Matthew 24:29-31 very carefully). Revelation 20:4,5 tells us that the saints martyred in the Tribulation will be in the First Resurrection. The First Resurrection is the RAPTURE! The Rapture is obviously after the Tribulation! It's time to wake up and accept the truth. Place your trust in Jesus Christ not in fictional escapism.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but get it at a library... 3 out of 5.......2007-03-18

It's been awhile since reading this book, but after refreshing the book I have decided that LaHaye and Jenkins have produced a so-so book. The book is interesting and points out evidence that leads readers to think that the end times are extremely close, which I won't argue, we could be closer to the end, but people have thought they were living in the end times for hundreds of years. This book is heavily centered on pre-tribulation ideas, which I don't see a need to focus on since there is no strong biblical evidence to pin point this idea and there is really no need to even know since we have no control over the matter.

Part of the reason I gave this book such a low rating is that I find some of the scripture references that Lahaye uses to discuss puzzling. For example, Page 57 talks about two sets of "These Things" in Matthew 24:33-34. How does the same verse have two different meanings?

The book does a good job discussing the "birth pains" of the end times. Just because we see one or two events that are prophecy doesn't mean the world is coming to an end just yet, it means we are close but just like a woman in labor, the "pains" will be more dramatic and closer together when the end is getting extremely close.

1 out of 5 stars Why continue to be deceived..........2006-06-26

Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins, and others in the Pre-Trib circle, such as Ed Hindson, Tommy Ice, Chuck Missler, etc., continue to put forth the same deceptions that Hal Lindsey popularized decades ago. The notion of a pre-tribulation rapture is foreign to scripture, it is foreign to the teachings of the early Church, and it is grooming the Church for destruction through ignorance and lack of preparation for what is really coming. These men are novices and not prophecy "experts" or "scholars" by any stretch of the imagination; they are those who tickle the ears of gullible Christians. Why continue to be deceived? Tim Cohen, in his excellent book, "The AntiChrist and a Cup of Tea," provides biblically sound and testable evidence to show that the coming AntiChrist is known NOW. Not only that, the same author (Tim Cohen) has now put out the strongest presentation on the whole issue of the rapture EVER offered to the saints of God in Christ: "The REAL Rapture". If you really want to know the truth about the timing of the coming rapture, then you need to hear Tim Cohen's "The REAL Rapture" (based on a volume in his forthcoming "Messiah, History, and the Tribulation Period" series (see Prophecy House's web site, prophecyhouse dot com, for details on these items).

This is a superb book. It is full of information for anyone who wants to start to look into prophecy and it is also great for those who are already into prophecy study. This is one book to have in your library as NOW is the time to LOOK UP to Jesus' soon return. Hope anyone remotely interested will purchase this great book.. get out your Bibles as this book continously refers to God's word! GREAT!!!

        Book Description

When we zero in on a goal and thoroughly prepare to accomplish it, life is what happens in between. From Another Side of Time by Britina Bovet embodies such elements in her tale of clan rivalry, gender bias, love triangles, and planetary struggle.

Enseha is a small, rural, patriarchal planet where a young woman has been trained to be the leader of her father's army. As the older surviving child of the Lord MacEnzie, Belinda is trained as a warrior. She's hard, though, and beautiful - when she lets her long hair cascade out from under her helmet. After long difficult hyears, many bruises and scars, she's finally wone the respect of the men under her command.

Then, Belinda is called upon to perform a service for which she has no training. She is to wed the son of a neighboring clan leader in order to form a favorable alliance. As the dutiful warrior that she is, she faces this task squarely and is pleasantly surprised by the womanly pleasures she discovers in the arms of her handsome husband, Stuart O'Connor.

Unbeknown to Belinda, her beloved uncles is a scientist who travels back and forth between Earth and Enseha through the use of hidden "gates." Maelgwin O'Hara studies the erratic weather conditions affecting Earth whenever Magic is performed on Enseha. When Earth's environment is on the verge of no longer being suitable to support humans, Belinda, now Queen of Enseha is asked to provide a new home to thousands of refugees.

5 out of 5 stars From Another Side Of Time.......2001-09-18

Wow, what a great book! The plot was very complex but very easy to follow. Most books that I read takes me a time to get through them. However,in my busy life, I made the effort to finish the book in a timely manner. I could tell that Ms Bovet is a master of building up her characters and expanding her sub plots. "From Another Side Of Time", meets both requirements for an action packed adventure and a true love story.

Each event in the book plays well off the other one. Without giving anything away, the main characters involves well into each other, and into the storyline. It's a great blend of magic, science fiction, and a story of love with great action from the start to the end. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a very good read. I can't wait for the next installment.

        5 out of 5 stars Very creative!.......2001-07-20

The characters are intriguing and the story moves along very well. Great plot and a fantastic imagination and creativity puts it all together. I couldn't put it down until I read it all the way through, because I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I was always amazed, and never disappointed.
