Book Description
As the Clone Wars rage, victory or defeat lies in the hands of elite squads that take on the toughest assignments in the galaxy–stone-cold soldiers who go where no one else would, to do what no one else could. . . .
On a mission to sabotage a chemical weapon research facility on a Separatist-held planet, four clone troopers operate under the very noses of their enemies. The commandos are outnumbered and outgunned, deep behind enemy lines with no backup–and working with strangers instead of trusted teammates. Matters don’t improve when Darman, the squad’s demolitions expert, gets separated from the others during planetfall. Even Darman’s apparent good luck in meeting an inexperienced Padawan vanishes once Etain admits to her woeful inexperience.
For the separated clone commandos and stranded Jedi, a long, dangerous journey lies ahead, through hostile territory brimming with Trandoshan slavers, Separatists, and suspicious natives. A single misstep could mean discovery . . . and death. It’s a virtual suicide mission for anyone–anyone except Republic Commandos.

A Great Read!.......2007-10-06
I am only 16 so this was a bit of an advanced book for me. Although it took me a little while to get used to the author's style i thoroghly enjoyed the book. Once i adjusted to the author's style it was fanstastic and i couldn't put it down. The book gives a great insight into the lives of the clones and their weapons, tactics, training, etc.
Good Read.......2007-08-23
I read this book relatively quickly. Not because it was an easy, quick read, but because I couldn't put it down. As soon as I was done reading a few chapters, I wanted to find out what happened next. But like every human being, I needed sleep. If you liked the characters and situations in this book, I recommend the second book: Triple Zero (Star Wars: Republic Commando)
I've never read a Star Wars book before so i was a little wary of it at first. But when I dove down and started reading it, I couldn't wait to finish it and start the next one.
An excellent read! .......2007-06-12
Okay. I first have to say I normally hate books like this one. I have read the vast majority of the Clone Wars Star Wars novels and so far I have hated each and every one of them. When I first heard about this one I thought oh brother. Here we go again. After several long months I couldn't stand it and picked it up. I have to say I loved it! Miss Traviss writes with a very military flair. I spent ten years in Service and to have an author come this close. . .well it was refreshing. Add to that the characters did not resort to contrived banter nor did Miss Traviss rely on absurd plot devices to carry the story. I enjoyed that Miss Traviss also did not make her characters larger than life. Some of these guys seemed like troops I served with and that was refreshing. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. It captures the spirit and grit of Star Wars without all the hocus pocus, irrelevant characters so many other novels seem tobe filled with. It is an easy read and I anticipate reading this over and over for a little escape.
Good not great.......2007-05-31
I've read almost every Star Wars book ever written. This one is unique in that gives depth to the faceless clones. It's a unique angle that I haven't seen before.
It's a decent read but I never really became overly excited. The characters are decently fleshed out but never really make you care much about them. The plot never really develops fully. It's like watching a movie that fizzles out at the climax.
Decent read for Star Wars fans but mostly mediocre.
Nice Concept.......2007-04-29
I enjoyed the concept of getting to know the Clone Commandos. They aren't expendable and that they are real humans are what you learn in this book. I enjoyed meeting a new Padawan, Etain. It was interesting to see her come into her own and learn from the commandos. I liked their interactions together and you find out more about how they were trained. However, I didn't like that the author kept switching points of view during the chapter. I wish she would have wrote in one character's point of view and then switched after the chapter break. I felt the ending was rushed and didn't make complete sense. I look forward to reading Triple Zero and seeing the continuation of this unit.
Book Description
Following the eruption of the bloody Clone Wars at the battle of Geonosis, both sides remain deadlocked in a stalemate that can be broken only by elite warrior teams like Omega Squad, clone commandos with terrifying combat skills and a lethal arsenal. . . .
For Omega Squad, deployed deep behind enemy lines, it’s the same old special ops grind: sabotage, espionage, ambush, and assassination. But when Omega Squad is rushed to Coruscant, the war’s most dangerous new hotspot, the commandos discover they’re not the only ones penetrating the heart of the enemy.
A surge in Separatist attacks has been traced to a network of Sep terror cells in the Republic’s capital, masterminded by a mole in Command Headquarters. To identify and destroy a Separatist spy and terror network in a city full of civilians will require special talents and skills. Not even the leadership of Jedi generals, along with the assistance of Delta squad and a certain notorious ARC trooper, can even the odds against the Republic Commandos. And while success may not bring victory in the Clone Wars, failure means certain defeat.
Also includes the bonus story Omega Squad: Targets by Karen Traviss!

One of the best SW books ever.......2007-07-19
It's one of the best Star Wars books I've ever read, I connected with the characters and I praise Karen for making them truly unique individuals in spite of the fact of being clones! And I absolutely loved the little philosophical concerns that are expressed in the book, just as I enjoy them in the Wess'har series (pick up those books by Karen Traviss, if you enjoy this book, you're gonna love them)...
I love when an author can make me stop reading and think about what I'm reading and yet wanting not to put the book away and lying to myself "I'll read just to the end of the chapter... but... how does the next chapter begins?"
Somewhat better than Hard Contact.......2007-05-31
This is the second in the series. The author does a better job this time in fleshing out the characters. I cared a little more about what happened to them this time than I did in the previous book.
Unfortunately the plot is still substandard. It's kinda interesting but it doesn't really pick up much steam and doesn't climax well.
It's another decent read for Star Wars fan. Somewhat better than the first "Hard Contact" book but I'd still classify it as mediocre.
Another bullseye.......2007-05-19
I think this is about as close as we'll get to 24 in the Star Wars universe. The story brings back the protagonists from Hard Contact for another adventure set during the Clone Wars. This time, the action takes place on Coruscant--the title refers to the planet's coordinates, as it is considered the center of the galaxy--where Separatist terrorists have been...well...causing terror. The boys of Omega Squad are teamed up with Delta, the heroes of LucasArts's Republic Commando video game. What's strange is the fact that Delta is almost unlikeable, due to their near disdain for Omega. This rivalry, however, turns out to be a strong, interesting element rather than a weakness. Once again along for the ride is Jedi Knight Etain Tur-Mukan, whose friendship with commando Darman is developed even more in this entry. This relationship ends up being surprisingly affecting; I really felt for these characters and kept wishing that they could have met under different circumstances. The oft-mentioned Kal Skirata shows up in this entry, and he proves to be every bit as colorful as one would imagine from reading Hard Contact. To my surprise, he also ends up having several poignant moments throughout. This is really what surprised me about Triple Zero; it actually manages to examine a lot of the ethical and philosophical issues that relate to the characters and their actions, whether it be about the morality of torture or validity of clones as human beings. If I have one criticism, it is that it feels like the resolution of the mission falls into place too easily. I was expecting a twist or two to occur near the end to make things more interesting. To her credit, though, Traviss intends to make the characters and their relationships more important than the anti-terror plot. With her command of character-driven action and Mandalorian culture, I'd really love to see Traviss tackle some Boba Fett stories set in the time period between episodes two and five. Anyone who agrees, please email [..]and let them know!
Triple Zero.......2007-05-13
This thrilling sequel to Hard Contact (both by Karen Traviss) is a great and exciting book. It is filled with action from beginning to end and is laced with shocking twists, turns, and developments. I would highly recommend this book to any Star Wars fun or anyone looking for sci-fi action. But please do yourself a favor, read "Star Wars Republic Commando: Hard Contact" first.
More Action.......2007-05-07
I didn't like this one as well as I did Hard Contact. Let me tell you why. I'm a more of relationships reader not an action reader. Yes I want there to be action but I don't want it to be the main story of the book and it is in this one. I'm not going to write a plot summary because so many already have written about it. I loved how Ms. Traviss brought the other characters that were mentioned in Hard Contact into this book especially Kal and Orbo. I loved how you found out more about how the clones came into existance and what their training was like. Yes, I enjoyed the action but at times it was overwhelming to me to figure out what and who they were talking about. I really enjoyed the progression of Etain and Darmin. I can't wait for more of the books about the commandos and the Nulls. I would highly recommend this book to any Star Wars fan but read Hard Contact first. I just couldn't give it 5 stars but it's still a great book.

Great to revisit old friends.......2007-07-08
I discovered this series of books by accident in the mid-1990s. I usually do not buy books on a whim, but I happened to be in a bookstore & saw either "Return to War" or "Fire Planet" on the shelf. The cover art attracted me because the man looked like a favorite actor of mine & I wondered if a film was being planned. I bought the book & was soon in pursuit of the earlier, even then out-of-print paperbacks. I criss-crossed Los Angeles County visiting every used bookshop I knew of & a few I didn't know of looking for my prizes.
I must add that this search & the pleasure these books brought me were a very important diversion at a difficult time in my life. My aged parents were in decline & passed away within months of each other. Therefore, these books will always have a place in my library & their author will always have my greatest regard & thanks.
As I read these new editions, I am also reading the old Ace mass market trade paperbacks. I have an interest in the writing process & the editing process, which goes hand in hand. This parallel reading has been fascinating.
I suspect that these hardback editions are the equivalent of the "director's cut" of a film.
On the whole, there is not much difference between the 2 editions of "Star Commandos." The name of the planet changed. In the paperback it is consistently Visnu, while Ms. Griffin evidently preferred Vishnu. Was it an attempt at political correctness to avoid a slight to Hinduism?
There are other minor differences. Paragraph & chapter breaks are sometimes different. There are a few more typos, which hint at non-professional proof-reading, but there were a few typos in the mass market paperbacks as well. Nothing's perfect.
In the new editions, one sees a bit more of the "home port" of Horus, & therefore, a little more of "normal life," as well as a little more insight & detail about the characters. They are things that a commercial editor might have found to be an interruption of the momentum of the story, which I suspect Ace was trying to skew a bit towards the 14-25 yr old male crowd. In reality, these books were always more for women who love SF-action-adventure-romance with strong male & female leads.
In some instances, the Ace editor was right about the cuts enhancing momentum. However, the true fans of these stories will not mind those minor "time-outs" at all. These may be action/SF novels, but they are character driven. It is the characters for which the true fans read.
I admit that I have read the last 3, non-Ace published novels already. These new editions contain some "set-ups" & introduce a few of the characters who will appear in the later books, but who were not seen in the original paperbacks. Therefore, I heartily urge any fan of these books to read the new editions, published by ArcheBooks Publishing.
A good start - not the best possible, but nevertheless a good start.......2006-05-06
Former enemies Islaen Connor (Commando Captain) and Varl Tarl Sogan (ex-War Prince, now a fugitive on the run) join forces in order to stop a plot of destroying a human colony placed on a hostile planet.
The strong points were all about the Connor-Sogan relation, and the story could've been a whole lot better with a bit more deep insight into the characters' motivations.
The weak points were about the scenery: a lot of pretty unconvincing out-doors places (this is an alien, newly-colonized planet that feels like a copy-cat of Earth's tropical/sub-Saharian nature).
In all,an interesting book. Not the best in the series, but an acceptabele starting point. Recommended.
ROUSING SPACE OPERA IN CLASSIC SF TRADITON.......2005-08-18
Connoisseurs of rousing space opera and science fiction adventure in the tradition of Andre Norton and Anne McCaffrey can rejoice with the reissuing of the first installment in P.M. Griffin's Star Commandos Series by ArcheBooks.
Star Commandos and its sister volumes are great comfort books that give readers rousing space opera in the classic tradition of science fiction.
It's nice to see them being brough back into print. Hopefully P.M. Griffin will turn her pen/computer towards creating more great, enjoyable works of science fiction.
P.M. converted me to a SciFi fan.......2005-05-17
In Star Commandos 2--Colony in Peril, P.M. has woven a story of battle between two warring factions with an insertion of action adventure, suspense and romance. The two main characters--Varn, an ex-War Prince, and Islen Connor, a battle sharpened Commando, were once opposites in battle. Now married, they take on the challenge of keeping a corrupt government official and equally corrupt developers from seizing control of an undeveloped planet that would result in complete annihilation of the people who live there. From beginning to end, it's superb edge-of-the-seat drama. Like I said, P.M. converted me.

Superb series start!.......2004-12-04
Star Commandos 1 -- the adventure does indeed begin with two former adversaries thrown together in a survival scenario. Griffin develops superb characterization that explains in depth the motivation and personalities of Varn, the ex-War Prince, and Islaen, the commando, bringing them into a partnership to last the series and beyond. Against the backdrop of the recent Federation-Empire war, with its disparate philosophies, Griffin presents the two main characters in a newer battle to save innocent colonists from the dual threat of local predators and greedy developers. She succeeds admirably. A wonderful introduction to the series with two fine characters who keep the reader constantly engaged.

And the drama goes on .......2006-05-06
Former Admiral Varl Tarl Sogan believed his whole family destroyed in the purge that followed his conviction to death for refusing to obey the direct order of destroying a planet. But the small Arcturian force stranded on a perilous planet that enslaved the population is from a ship that Sogan knows his cousin commanded. And as Sogan himself is a telepath, this cousin that controls the minds of his subjects is not a complete surprise. The thing is - Sogan has to help the commando team destroy the rogue army - and that will mean the destruction of his last relative alive.
I grew to really like Sogan, but sometimes his mental stress seems over-extended. So i may grade some of the books in the series lower than I'd usually do, just because unrelenting psychic pain makes me mad, and the refusal of the character to grow out of that state of mind is annoying. Other than that, the books are very enjoyable. Recommended.

A good space-adventure.......2006-05-06
A derelict ship proves to be the carrier of an off-world plague, threatening to put an end to the Thornen way of life, if allowed to proliferate. The commando team has to find out where the ship has come from, and do everything possible to anihilate the threat. But Sogan has already encountered the organisms and knows the only salvation lies in destroying all spores - and all possible carriers. So the race against enemies turns into a battle with time, in wich the former Admiral has to play on the lives of all his team, including himself.
The fourth in the Star Commandos series, recommended for '80s and '90s sci-fi fans.
Book Description
The immortal space saga of the STAR COMMANDOS continues. In the third volume of this compelling and endearing adventure series, Colonel Islaen Conner, her consort, former Arcturian Admiral and War Prince Varn Tarl Sogan, her old friend and former Commando Captain Jake Karmikel, along with Bandit the Jadite, meet beautiful and resourceful demolitions expert Sergeant Bethe Danlo. Together, the Commandos must travel to the depths of the treacherous caverns of the planet Hades on a mission to recover and disarm a deadly "Planetbuster," a missile left over from the War, capable of wreaking unspeakable damage - and quite possibly about to fall into the hands of dreaded space pirates...unless they get there first. "Excellent SF Adventure!" Andre Norton Journey with the STAR COMMANDOS through vast and ancient caverns, fording underground rivers, crawling through a chillingly tight labyrinth of tunnels, scaling chimney towers, and inching across thin ribbon ledges with danger around every turn. This mission challenges the COMMANDOS unlike anything they've faced before, testing their endurance and resolve to the point of sheer desperation.

Great pulp fun with an old fashioned sci-fi feel!.......2006-11-08
Excellent entry in the series! Can't wait for the rest of the books in this series to be re-released! Hopefully P.M. Griffin will write more books once all the Star Commandos books have been re-released!
And the grades go up again.......2006-05-06
The space-commando team has to recover and/or destroy a "planet buster" - a planet-scale weapon left behind in the war with the Arcturian Empire. The only problem is that the weapon is hidden deep below the surface, the guide recognizes Sogan as an Arcturian and tries to kill him - and, yeah, there are already a number of bad guys looking for the thing. Besides this, the mission is simple.
I liked this a whole lot better than the previous, the writing improves continously. Recommended for space-action fans (even if in this book the space pretty much is missing - the series has enough space-adventure for all).
Third of the Star Commando Series.......2002-01-28
The charm of this series is the exuberant enthusiasm that the author brings to what is essentially a simple story line. The heroes in this case are a crack commando team who are sent into the deadly underground caverns of Hades to retrieve a weapon called a planetbuster.
The commandos led by Islaen Connor, and including her consort Varn, her old companion Jake Karmikel, demolitions expert Bethe Danlo and the irrepessible Bandit, a telepathic birdlike creature, are forced to penetrate deep into Hades, battling nature and bad guys.
It's a fun trip.
