Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Taste in books is very subjective........2007-09-25

And what one person likes another thinks is rot. But I very much like this book and the subsequent one I have read. I vowed I was not going to start another "series" of English mysteries. I already have about seven different authors going. But I have ordered the third in this series. I especially like the character development in this series, not just of the main characters, but of the supporting ones as well. I never am any good at figuring out "who did it", so the characters, the environment and the quality of the writing are very important to me. But most important is whether or not I actually like and come to care about the characters. And I would love to be friends with the people in this story.

Colorful bunch.......2006-03-11

British royal family was always a colorful bunch. In comparisson with their ancestors, today's Windsors are a pretty tame group. Prince Eddie, the grandson of Queen Victoria was very often a subject of speculation and rumor. Some even suspected him of being Jack the Ripper. In this fictional account, the untimely death of Prince Eddy is not influenza but murder. Is it truth or not nobody realy knows anymore, but it is quite possible.
The first in a series of novels featuring Lord Francis Powercourt is a very good read. Mix of facts and fiction makes a very pleasent dish.Very enjoyable.

strong start, weak ending.......2005-12-23

i quite liked the first half, or even two-thirds of this book. dickinson writes well (though he confuses flotsam and jetsam, which a good editor should have caught, and imagines a wealthy aristocrat would have to send to the grocers for cake--again, a good editor...), most of the plot is believable, but the cinematic bit at the end could have used, yes, a good editor. actually, the whole last part could have used editing, since it goes on nearly forever after the murder confesses.

i agree with one reviewer that the romance added little to the story, and was anachronistic to boot. this was the height of the victorian age, it is extremely unlikely that any members of the upper class would have married in ten days.

i also have little patience with a hero who refers, frequently, to his sisters as 'the three witches' and then asks their help in his investigations. in fact, the only woman in this book which has very few female characters who comes off well (aside from the rather one-dimensional love interest) is alexandra, the princess of wales, and she never appears.

i'm debating about reading the next book in the series. while the author is better at recreating a 19th century atmosphere than many i've read, the hero wasn't very well developed--some of the secondary characters were better drawn and more memorable. still, it's better than most historical mysteries and there is definite potential.

Interesting, Different.......2005-10-20

Goodnight, Sweet Prince was different in that it is a fairly well-done work of historical fiction, somewhat of a rarity these days. I found the premise, that Prince Eddy was murdered instead of dying from influenza as the official report stated, both intriguing and plausible. The romance between Lord Powerscourt and Lady Lucy was a charming sidenote to the main story. And, most importantly, I feel Dickenson manages to write realistic dialog for 19th century characters, giving the reader the sense of really being there, observing the story first-hand.

Sweet Prince could have been sweeter..........2004-04-27

I picked up David Dickinson's Goodnight Sweet Prince because I am fascinated with the Victorian era, and especially, with Queen Victoria and her family. The Sweet Prince in the title is Prince Albert Victor, oldest son of the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII) and second in line to the throne. Prince Eddy (as he is nicknamed) wasn't the brightest or most honorable of souls. He had no interest in learning and would probably be classified as special education today. He also had unorthodox sexual preferences, and was known to frequent prostitutes of both sexes. It was rumored that he had syphilis, and there was even talk that he was the real Jack the Ripper. His family was hoping that a marriage to Princess May of Teck would help set him straight and make him more respectable. Just days before his wedding, he died suddenly of influenza at the age of 28. But was influenza the real killer?

It is not a stretch to think that maybe Prince Eddy was murdered. He was an embarrassment to his family and would have made a questionable monarch. Britain and the Royal Family had nothing to lose and everything to gain by his death. In fact, Britain was much better off having Eddy's brother, King George V and his bride, Queen Mary (Eddy's former fiancée) lead the Empire through World War I. It is also believable that the Royal Family engaged in a cover-up. For those who think that they couldn't possibly stoop so low should remember that this is the same family who euthanized King George V as he was dying. They wanted his death to be reported first in the morning newspapers, and not the scandal sheet evening tabloids.

But what I did find a stretch was the plot itself. A British Lord, Francis Powerscourt, dabbles as a private investigator. He travels all over the Empire and Italy in search of the killer. There are scandals and cover-ups going back many years that Powerscourt must uncover. Interspersed throughout is a romance that I don't think adds much to the story. Also, although the book is filled with many true facts (the many affairs of the Prince of Wales, the many scandals involving Prince Eddy, etc.), there are also many more tidbits that are total fiction. There is also very little about the Royal Family-a disappointment to me.

You will be absorbed into the story.......2006-09-17

This really is "The Tragical History of Hamlet Prince of Denmark" and not only the Prince but his family. Not only his family but his friends. Not only his friends but all though that came before him and is told to those that came after him.

You can take time to scrutinize and pick apart many underlying themes or may of the phrases that now challenge Bible sayings in today's sound bites. But the real fun is in just reading the story and you will find that it is not as foreign as you may have thought.

A quick synopsis is that Old Hamlet conquered Old Fortinbras seizing his land. Now that Old Hamlet is dead, Young Fortinbras wants his land back and is willing to take it by force. Meanwhile back in Dänemark Young Hamlet who is excessively grieving for the loss of his father, gets a now insight from his fathers ghost. Looks like he was a victim of a "murder most foul"; it looks like his mother and uncle were in cahoots on the murder.

The story is about what each person felt and acted or did not act upon the situation.

You will find many movies and perverted imitations of the story but nothing will replace the original scripts that were intended to be watched.

If you are not used to Shakespeare's style of writing, this is a great way to start getting used to it. When I started reading this book, I had to look at the 'modern English' translation of each line, but by the end it was a lot easier to understand Shakespeare's writing, and now I can read Shakespeare's plays without a 'modern' translation!

A straight account......easy to follow.......1997-08-30

Although you won't find any new and interesting twists in this book about the death of Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, you will find easy reading that portrays the events at Mayerling in a straight forward, easy to follow account. The author promised to give the true account of how she died, and I was hoping for something new;I think that most people already know that Rudolf killed her and then killed himself. The pictures were excellent, and several of them I had never seen before. If you're new to the Mayerling legend, I highly recommend reading this one first

This book is a reflection of when I had a really really good relationship with one of my friends and how Maizon and the other girl just always stuck together no matter what would happen. They were like paper and glue, just no seperation. Even through their trials and tribulations, they are like really close sister. Over there summer time, they went places together, spent time with each other. Went shopping with each other.

Wonderful story...read all books in the trilogy........2005-03-18

I read this book in order to prescreen it before giving it to my beloved 8-year old niece. It held my adult attention with no problem, but is still age-appropriate as marketed. The fascinating story of Maizon and her best friend Margaret unfolds largely on their block in the big city. These two have grown up together and are as "thick as thieves". The story follows them over the course of a summer when Margaret faces a personal family crisis and Maizon deals with the uncertainty of moving away from her beloved grandmother, family and friends (including Margaret) for the very first time.

Jacqueline Woodson crafts a fine story that is so real you'll believe it could have happen to you or some beautiful brown baby girl you know.

I'd highly recommend all of the books in the trilogy.

Best Friends Forever.......2004-10-11

This book reveiw is on a book named Last Summer with Maizon. This book is about two best friends named Margarate and Maizon who lives on Madison Street. Her friend Maizon was accepted to Blue Hills, a school where really educated people go. Margarate does not want them to be separated. Every night she wishes Maizon will not get accepted. But when Margarate's father has a second heart attack, he dies and now all Margarate has is Maizon, her mother, her little brother Jay and the people around. Margarete was having a rough time anyway and then Maizon got accepted to Blue Hills. When it was time for Maizon to leave Margarate, her mother and Maizon's grandmother dropped her off. When Maizon wasn't there with Margarate her whole life changed. At school she was becoming popular, she was liked now. Days passed by and Maizon still didn't call. When Margarate went to go get her brother at her neighbors house, that's when Maizon calls. Margarate was so excited that Maizon wanted to come home. Margarate ran to the grandmother's house telling her the news. Margarate said Maizon wants to come home, the grandmother says that she would go get her. When Maizon got home it was like old times, they ran into each others arms. They then went to their favorite spot and started talking. Maizon said she came back because she wasn't being treated right, she didn't feel the same. So they sat there and talked and felt like old times with my best friend Maizon. I think that this book should have gotten an award or five stars. This book has mostly everything of real life. It deals with best friends, for example like my friendship with Kiena. It has separation, like my sister and me. It has a lost loved one like my godfather and it has a lesson like when you do wrong and learn your lesson. I think that this book should have five stars because it really relates to real life,it shows friendship and it shows and explains what happens in real life. I like this book because it reminds me of my life, me and my friends, how we argue and lose our friendship and then gain it back with a little talking. It reminds me of how I lose people in my family and then cry because I miss them. If I could buy this book, I would let my whole family read it, I would make it our reference book for when we need advice or something to do. This book is so good that all my friends wanted to read it. It is so good that I really read it because I don't really read books and when I read the book it made me think of when my best friend Ariel was going to move and how it made me feel, and how I compare it to Margarate and Maizon. This book is excellent, the author really put their heart in it and that they were depressed and needed a friend. If you ask my best friend Johnniece, she'll say that she really enjoyed the book, that it should get five stars, because the author really put thought, confidence, respect, love, care and her whole heart into this book. When I say she put confidence in this book I meant that she wrote it knowning that it will be a hit. The author thought about the words, thought her life and compared it and started writing it with compassion. I think that this book should be the book of the month in my school, because it shows and teaches a lesson. With the summary I wrote I put my heart in it because when I read it, it touched my heart. I won't want my friend away from me. I think that I mostly relate to Maizon, because when she left Margarte was beginning to be liked, and the girl was talking about Maizon and Margarte sat there and watched and listened instead of doing the right thing and telling them to stop doing that to their friend. I relate to Maizon, I relate to her because if people don't like me, I don't care. If people want me out of somewhere, then I'll leave and if people love me, I love them back and that's how Maizon is. She doesn't take junk. Alot of people relate to Maizon. This book is interesting and gets interesting as you read on. This book is really a good book that shows you friendship, break-up and everything else that deals with real life. I love this book, it is really good and I think that if most people had this book then they wouldn't be out doing the stupid and illegal things that they are doing. This book really didn't grasp Dr. Kings dream because when Maizon went to Blue Hills, the whites were treating her bad, they saw her different. Brenliniqua, Class 7-512.

This review that you will read is about a wonderful book called "The Last Summer with Maizon" by Jacquline Woodson. This book is great I would recommend it to readers that likes to read about best friends relationships. I can relate to this book because I'm going through the same thing. Oneof my best friends, Aerial is leaving to Westown boarding school when we graduate from 8th grade. I will miss her alot but when she comes for vacation we will be together.
Now let me tell you more about the book. This story was mainly about two best friends Maizon and Margaret. Maizon lives with her grandmother. Her grandmother wants to to get her into a gifted J.H.S. in Connecticut called "Blue Hill".She thinks these schools in New York aren't challenging enough so she wants Maizon to go to boarding school in Connectitcut.
The next main character is a girl named Margaret which is Mazion's best friend. Maizon lives with her mother, her father, and her little brother Lil'Jay. Margaret doesn't want Maizon to go to Connecticut. She prays every night for Maizon to stay here on Madison Street.
Maizon and Margaret has been together since they were babies they both grew up together on Madison Street in New York. They have went to school on Madison Street they have carved their names on that street and did many other things that they will always remember. Its like their life is on Madison Street and Margaret doesn't want Maizon to leave.
Maizon's grandmother took Maizon to take the test for the gifted J.H.S. Maizon was hoping she failed the test but she then changed her mind. Everyday she would check the mailbox hoping the test was there. Margaret did the opposite she prayed everynight hoping Maizon failed the test. Margaret felt that if Maizon left she will then be alone and Maizon will find a new best friend, and forget about her.
A few months later Maizon looked in the mailbox for the millionth time and found a letter that was from Blue Hill. Maizon went up stairs opened the letter read it and spread a big smile across her face because it said "Congratulations Maizon you've been excepted to Blue Hill. Maizon told her grandmother then quickly called her best friend and told her the good news but Margaret thought of it as bad news. Margaret went and told her mother and she said "oh great". Margaret's mother didn't know how she felt about Maizon going to Blue Hill which meant leaving her. These two girls were so close that they promised each other not to go to Manhattan without each other.
Time then came for Maizon to go to Connecticut. Maizon, Margaret, Lil Jay, Margaret's mother and Maizon's grandmother went on the train to Manhattan to take Maizon to Penn Station. Maizon gave Margaret a huge hug said good bye and did the same to the others. On their way back to Madison Street Margaret asked her mother will her and Maizon become old best friends. Her mother said "no" never that made Margaret feel so much better but she still worried.
Hours later Maizon got to Blue Hill settled down met all her teachers and classmates. After a few days of being in the school Maizon got the message from her classmates. Maizon felt that they didn't like her, no one talked to her, no one payed her any attention, or even tried to be friends with her. Maizon didn't call anyone in New York for days because she wanted everyone to think she was okay. One day she couldn't hold it anymore and decided to call. She called and and spoke to Margaret told her how she felt and she wanted to come home. She told Margaret to tell her grandmother because she didn't want to disappoint her. she thinks her grandmother might think she just said that because she doesn't want to be there. Her grandmother found out called her and told her "it was going to be okay" and she can come home. A few days later Margaret was looking out the window and saw Maizon running to her house. Margaret went outside hugged her and told her how much she missed her. They then walked down Madison Street and talked about everything they did when they were younger.
I hope you enjoyed the review. I also hope you saw that there were two problems in the story. The 1st problem was that Margaret didn't want Maizon to go to Blue Hill. The solution was Maizon went but she didn't like it so she came back which made Margaret very happy. The2nd problem was that Margaret didn't like the way her classmates were treating her and she wanted to leave. The solution was that her grandmother made plans as quick as possible to get her here and she did. Maizon and Margaret was happy again.
Now that you have read a wonderful book review about the book "The Last Summer with Maizon" by Jacqueline Woodson, I hope you check it out and read it. Once you read the first page you will fall in love with the book.I hope you read the whole book and check out the 2nd part of the book "Maizon at Blue Hill". This book is just as good or better. The second part of the book talks about when she goes to Blue Hill and how she feels that she is different from the white kids, in the school. At Blue Hill there are only 5 black children and Maizon is the only 7th grader. Imagine how interesting this book will be "you can't know without reading it". I hope you read it and, I hope you liked the review.

An Archeological Detective Story.......2007-07-08

How could some one possible start with a peice of burned pancake and go to a full blown recreation of a person's life and last moments of death? Read the book and you will find out.

It is one of the best books out there that combine archeology and good old fashioned sleuthing to give you a great ride, one I will guarrentee you will never forget.

If you are intrested in the Druids and the Celts and want an accurate look at them, then this is your book.

A friend of mine gave me this one a number of years ago, and I placed it with my stack of "books to read" and, well, to make a long story short, it got lost in the shuffle...Anyway, I recently ran across it again, and this time I actually read it. My goodness, I wish read this one years ago. It is a very well written and well researched story. I was absolutely amazed at what could be learned from a body found after it had spent several centuries in a peat bog. The author wove a fascinating tale of a people long departed, yet, culturally are still with us to this day. Any of those interested in Celtic history or just the history of Western Man, needs to find and read this one. It is certainly well worth adding to your collection.

Lovernios is believed to be an ancient Druid prince found ritually sacrificed in a bog. Who was this man? How did he come to be there? Discover for yourself in this fascinating historical story of Lindow man.

I really enjoyed the story of Lindow man. The authors discuss and bring forth theories on the life of Lovernios, the climate and time, and the ritual thinking which (may) have led to him paying the ultimate sacrifice to the Gods' of the bog- his life.

Great for those interested in reading about the life and times of the ancient Celts, as well as those interested in understanding elements of ancient Celtic traditions.

Fascinating detective story.......2001-02-16

It is remarkable how much the authors and forensic anthropologists manage to induce from one partial body found in a bog. I found their speculations generally very persuasive, and the writing is very good.

My only quibble is that, as other reviewers have mentioned, the last 1/3 of the book the authors lose their narrow focus and go off on all sorts of speculation involving the druids in general - that part isn't nearly as interesting.

If you like this book, the closest analaogy I can recommend is to books describing how much information archaelogists have wrung out of Lucy, the Nariokotome (sp?) boy, etc. - this book reminded me of those.

A brilliant telling of a historical mystery.......2000-10-10

This book stands out in my memory as one of the best popular books ever written on an academic topic. The tale of the of Lindow Man- a body found in a peat bog- unfolds like a great mystery tale, and yet every bit of it is firmly rooted in fact. The story begins with the discovery of the body, and progresses through not only the investogation of the body itself, but through the discovery and reconstruction of ancient Celtic legends, the later British legends that derive from them, and finally their relation to the rituals that spelled the death of the man in the bog. The result is a tale far more exciting than anything you'd find in any fantasy or mystery novel.

Towords the end of the book, the authors get a bit speculative, but they're up front about this, and careful to seperate what's known from what is more conjectural. The authors' scientific training shows in the care they take to make the distinction clear.

Why this book went out of print when so many purely speculative books that aren't have as thrilling is certainly a mystery to me. If you have any interest in Celtic or Druid history, or in British legends, or in cultural and phsyical anthropology, get this book. If it doesn't go back into print soon, chase down a used copy. It's that good.

King's scholarship is severely in question in this book. Many of his claims about both Rasputin and Yusupov are mixtures of conjecture, pop-psychology, and pseudo-mysticism. In some cases, they're downright libelous.

Too bad Felix Yusupov isn't alive to sue him, too. (As he did both MGM and CBS).

King makes claims that cannot in any way be substantiated, but he presents them as truth, as allegations, and as innuendoes. The book comes across as an apologists attempt to paint Rasputin in a good light and to brand Yusupov as some kind of insane sex-criminal.

King even maintains that Rasputin could actually heal!

In most of the rest, he just re-quotes other sources. I know that stealing from more than one source is research, not plagiarism, but the only new insights into the events are from King's imagination.

Read it as fiction, not as fact. Yusupov might not have told the complete truth in his memoirs, but you can't take this book as fact either.

A wonderful book that give a just account of the Prince himself. Not your ordinary biography or history book, and it reads like a detective story, unfolding the final act of murder and sustaining reader curiosity even though the victim and the murderer are known.

Beautiful book and well-written.......2001-01-01

An absolutely beautiful book with interesting photos. The book is so well-written, that the characters in pre-revolutionary Russia come to life and one gets a feeling of the "hardship" Felix and Irina endured when in exile. It is astounding that a "mad" monk could have such an influence over the tsarina and her imperial court. Personally, I admire Prince Felix Youssoupov for taking such a drastic action in those troubled times. After reading this book, I bought his book "Lost Splendour" which gives generally a very good impression of what life was like in pre-revolutionary Russia and there are some funny chapters in it as well. It ends with the tragic exile from Yalta sailing towards the unknown.

The author does a wonderful job of separating the myths and the truth concerning the lives of the "Mad Monk" Rasputin and his killer, Felix Youssoupov. Rich in detail, I felt like I was in Tsarist Russia, watching the dramatic events as they unfolded. Recommended reading for any history buff.

Historian Knight Shines in his Telling of this Epic Tragedy.......2003-08-09

To those with an interest in British Colonial wars, particularly the Zulu War of 1879, Ian Knight is known as the preeminent scholar on the subject. His previous books have all been meticulously researched, couching fact within a writing style that makes for an enjoyable read. My interest in the Zulu War has always centered on the heroic major battles, especially the defense of the mission station at Rorke's Drift. Before reading this book I had considered the fate of the Prince Imperial (son of Napoleon III and heir in exile to the throne of France) to be a minor footnote to the text of the greater conflict and the subject held little interest for me. However, after completing the first chapter I had become a convert. I believe the brilliance of this book lies in Knight's ability to balance the instinctual historian within with the wonderful telling of a story. There really is something for everyone. The serious student will encounter information not commonly found in general histories, specifically relating to the impact the presence the Prince Imperial had on officers who were the strategists of the campaign. At times this impact was substantial and all of this rare information is well annotated. Those who wish to be drawn into a great story will not emerge disappointed. Knight deftly weaves the emotional and physical journeys of the key players in their passage to inevitable tragedy. Almost as compelling is the narrative of the fallout within the army from the death of the Prince and the struggle his mother, Empress Eugenie, endures in an attempt to come to terms with his dramatic passing. I would suggest that those unfamiliar with the Zulu War also acquire a copy of Knight's book, "Brave Mens Blood," as this comprehensive overview will provide a vivid context for the events in "With His Face to the Foe." For those with a working knowledge of the war, this is the definitive book on the subject and is a must read!
