Customer Reviews:
A useless collection of questionable statements.......2005-05-19
This guy claims expertise he does not have. It is clear that this he thinks combining a mish-mash of disorganized facts and questionable opinions in an endless series of lists and bullet-points makes for writing a book. An example is his useless list of potential crime victims, including laughable characterizations like "Business people -- vulnerable anytime, anywhere," and "Police officers -- easily isolated and overwhelmed." Another bizarre, casually-made and unexplained statement: "The availability of weapons has nothing to do with the incidence of domestic homicides." Or "Drive-by shooting victims are generally children." Huh? And the worst of it is these are not rare hiccups -- these disparate and doubtful claims are all from the same randomly-selected page. This book is a compendium of nonsense like this.
One could learn more about how criminals think by watching an old episode of "Knight Rider."
Bleah........2004-06-16
This was terrible. I don't know a lot about crime and psychology, but I do know about Wicca, and the author (even though he praises it) doesn't know what he's talking about; it's clear he got all his info from the one Craft book in his bibliography. His mention of Wicca is about as insulting and innaccurate as saying, "Christianity is about people who worship a dead guy nailed to a stick. They believe the Earth is flat, they have a Pope, and they celebrate a season called Passover."
With this kind of BS in the part I do know about, I don't have much faith in the rest of it. And the heavy-handed opinionated text was utterly out-of-line in what is supposed to be a reference book. Shame on Howdunit for letting this pile of junk get published.
Sure, this isn't meant to be a book about religion, but if the guy can't be bothered to check his facts on one thing, what good is it as a reference if I have to double-check everything else he says for similar errors? I'd no more use this book than I'd use a dictionary that had defined Anteater as "a kind of fish."
Nearly useless for writers.......2003-12-08
Other than a list of abnormal personality types and one or two other items that were probably cribbed from elsewhere, this book is of no help whatever to a writer that wants to understand the criminal mind. It's so heavily opinionated without supporting data and contains so much over-written prose that everything the author states is subject to skepticism. It got to the point that I just didn't believe anything he wrote. Many examples of the problems have been mentioned by other reviewers.
No real meat in this........2003-09-21
I was a bit irritated at spending good money for this book. I wanted very much to understand the psychology of why criminals act the way they do, but I finished this book knowing no more than what I did going in. The author makes too many pronouncements, many of which I doubted. His reasoning seemed vague, and I was left wondering if he made his statements based on sound research or just his own opinion. If anyone knows of a better reference on the psychology of criminal and psychotic behavior--one geared to writers--I'd like to hear what it is.
Disappointing.......2003-08-31
This book was just disappointing and irritating on many levels. I don't consider myself to be an expert on crime, but I do consider myself to be well-read. The author takes the most common ideas about criminals and lays them out as fact. He doesn't support almost any of it with any kind of statistic or study, and also doesn't offer that there could be other factors or differing opinions of why these crimes occur. Supporting evidence is sorely lacking.
His psychological explanations really grated on my nerves. Anyone who had studied psychology knows there are a wide range of divisions of psychology. He takes one position in psychology and preaches it as the only interpretation. Admittedly, most individuals in psychology take one position and exclude the others, but it doesn't give you a completely accurate view of the events you're analyzing if you refuse to allow for other view. It was grating to read, and I had a hard time making my way through the book.
Some of the examples are poorly supported and explained OR are still under debate as to real criminals who committed the crime. As someone who has read about a some of the crimes listed, I found that this author has omitted theories, has omitted facts and just ran with the most popular theory, regardless of facts.
The only thing I did appreciate was the opening of the history of these types of criminals. However, even then I was disappointed with the lack of background info and the brevity of the history of these types of crimes.
I'm hesitant to recommend this book for beginners simply because it is such a narrow view of the possibilities, of the facts and is just lacking in anything helpful. Almost everything listed in the book I already had read about or studied.
Spend your money and time elsewhere. You'll be better served if you do.

Book Description
A gripping and powerful new thriller -- the debut of a stunning new voice in suspense fiction -- and the first appearance of a tough and remarkable investigator, pathologist, and forensic physician, Dr. Anya Crichton.
The only female freelancer in the male-dominated field, pathologist Dr. Anya Crichton will take any work she can find to pay child support and her mortgage, get her new business off the ground, and battle her ex-husband for custody of their three-year-old son. Things turn around rapidly, however, when her expert forensic evidence is instrumental in winning a high-profile case -- and new work offers start pouring in.
But Anya's investigation into the drug overdose of a young Lebanese girl is raising troubling questions. Startling coincidences between this sad and tragic death and a series of seemingly unrelated suicides that Anya is also examining at the urging of her friend and colleague, detective sergeant Kate Farrer, suggest that there's a monumental evil at work in the shadows. With each scalpel cut, Anya Crichton's forensic prowess and deductive brilliance are pulling her relentlessly toward a sinister plot and a devastating truth -- and once she enters the lethal darkness, she may never again see the light of day.

Intriguing corpse similarities!!.......2006-09-01
Well firstly I was momentarily confused by the words post-mortum and autopsy both being used until I realised that this was neither a British set or American set book...so it was refreshing to read something set in Australia. :)
I liked Anya and found her work interesting, as well as her personal life. Although I never quite understood the relevance of having a sister who went missing as a child...it was just as good a story without that part.
I enjoyed the plot and I wasn't expecting the ending...although I'm still not really sure about the motive. I also had to remind myself a couple of times who was who with so many female characters/corpses!
I'd definitely look out for Kathyrn's second novel though. :)
"She was like a murder magnet.".......2006-06-11
Thirty-four year old Anya Crichton, the Australian heroine of Kathryn Fox's medical thriller, "Malicious Intent," is both a forensic pathologist and a forensic physician. That is, she is qualified to conduct postmortems to establish cause of death and she is also an expert in assessing the wounds and injuries of people who have survived assaults. Anya has a great deal on her mind. Her marriage is kaput, her ex-husband, Martin, has custody of their three-year-old son, Ben, and she is scrambling to make a living.
Kate sometimes works with her friend, twenty-eight year old Detective Sergeant Kate Farrer, whose competence as a investigator is offset by her arrogant and brusque manner. One day, Kate informs Anya that she is looking into the unusual case of a pregnant nun named Clare Matthews who committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. When a pathologist looks at a slide of Matthews's lungs, he notices that they contain unusual hourglass-shaped fibers. What are these fibers and how did the nun come to inhale them? Stranger still, several other women are found dead, apparent suicides, and they have the same fibers in their lungs. What did all of these women, who apparently did not even know one another, have in common?
Kate and Anya have no way of knowing that a manipulative and clever man has embarked on a Machiavellian experiment. This individual's actions have already resulted in the deaths of at least four women, and the closer that Kate and Anya get to uncovering the perpetrator's identity, the greater the danger that they, too, will fall victim to this cunning and elusive sadist.
"Malicious Intent" features an attractive, smart, and vulnerable heroine who has already been compared to Patricia Cornwell's forensic pathologist, Kay Scarpetta. Unlike the self-confident and financially secure Scarpetta, however, Anya has few resources to deal with the many difficulties that life has tossed her way. She is particularly vulnerable because of a secret from her past that has never given her a moment's peace.
Kathryn Fox expertly shows how a forensic specialist can discern elusive details about the nature of a crime by reading autopsy reports and examining the victims who survive. There is a particularly effective scene in which Anya assists a fifty-five year old woman who was beaten and sexually assaulted. Anya comforts and reassures the victim, and then conducts a gentle but thorough forensic examination. The respect that Anya shows her client is a testament to her professionalism and compassion.
The Australian setting and colorful slang are entertaining for those of us who generally read mysteries set in the United States and England. (If nothing else, I learned that "stuffed up" is Aussie slang for "messed up.") Other aspects of "Malicious Intent" are not as strong. Anya's relationship with her ex-husband and son are a bit forced and melodramatic. The solution to the mystery is not only far-fetched, but it relies on certain conventional twists and turns that have been overused in many other novels of this type. To her credit, Fox wisely avoids wrapping up all of the various plot lines in a tidy bow, leaving a great deal to be resolved in the inevitable sequel. All in all, "Malicious Intent" is a promising first novel, and I look forward to the next installment in the adventures of angst-ridden Anya Crichton.

A shining new talent........2006-05-01
Dr. Anya Crichton is a freelancer pathologist in Australia. She is one of the few women in the field. Anya is trying to get her new business off the ground so she can pay her mortgage, pay child support, and then go to court to fight for custody of her three-year-old son, Ben.
Anya's expert forensic evidence is instrumental in winning a very high-profile case and soon the offers for work come pouring in! She decides to help a lawyer, Dan Brody, look into the death of a young Lebanese girl. It looks to be a simple overdose. However, Anya notices some odd fibers in the girl's lungs. This seems to have nothing to do with the death, so it is simply listed as a side note. Yet soon other female suicides show up. All the victims had disappeared for a short period of time before their bodies were found and all of them have the same odd fiber in their lungs. None of the deaths seem to be linked, so the law enforcements shrug it off. Anya finds herself unable to let it go. And someone out there is determined to stop her from nosing around, permanently.
**** I found this novel to be an intellectual challenge! I simply had to see if I could figure it all out before the main character did. The author adds in a realistic personal life for Anya to give the story a deeper feeling of belief. The story is well written and moves at a good clip. Fans of the CSI series will definitely want to check out this new talent. ****

Enjoyed it!.......2006-04-29
Author Kathryn Fox is a general practitioner who lives in Sydney, Australia. Malicious Intent is Fox's first novel. She is working on the second novel in the Anya Crichton series.
Pathologist, Dr. Anya Crichton is a freelancer in the male-dominated field. She's divorced and her ex-husband, Martin has custody of their young son because she is a working mother and Martin is a stay-at-home father. In Martin's case, the translation is: immature and lazy man.
Anya's investigation into the overdose death of a young Lebanese woman from a fundamentalist Muslim family raises frightening questions when she discovers coincidences between that death and the suicides of several other women.
Anya and her friend, Detective Sergeant Kate Farrer, chase the evil that is terrorizing unsuspecting women. Their investigation, if unsuccessful, could mean the death of one or both of the determined women.
Malicious Intent is a fast-paced and exciting novel with interesting characters and a scintillating plot. There are a few superfluous scenes that slow the action, but they don't detract from the novel's overall excitement.
Armchair Interviews says: Read Malicious Intent and then force yourself to wait for the release of the second Anya Crichton mystery. I suspect Ms. Fox will be a force to reckon with in the genre.

Stuberts Corner.......2004-11-08
Great book, full of action and huge amounts of background data (which is one of the reasons I love Battletech).
Fans of the older books though will start to notice that this is where the characters start to change drasticaly.
Victor Davion starts entering his 'wimpy' stage and Kai starts to become this ruthless cold killer (which is a total switch on the two characters).
Still, the two of them are not as bad yet as they eventualy become, so it's not too bad.
Buy this book, good stuff.
Stu.
A must have.......2003-09-24
If you're a MechWarrior fan and you only buy one Battletech novel, this is the one to get. It's not only a captivating story by a great author, but it effectively bridges the gap between the Refusal War (i.e. classic MechWarrior 2) and the Inner Sphere counterstrike against the Clans (the events of MechWarrior 3), and it also well foreshadows the Steiner-Davion civil war (the background of MechWarrior 4). If you're interested in MechWarrior backstory, this gives you a good look at the major players in the latter two installments of the series and explains how certain key story elements came about. And it's a riveting read in its own right.
Teriffic Read.......2002-02-10
I am an avid B-tech fan and have been reading this series for over ten years. This book is by far one of the best I have read. Vlad's literal rising from the ashes was very captivating. Also the political intriuge that accompanied it kept you guessing. I felt that Vlad really developed as a character as well as a leader that the Wolf Clan needs to bring them back to thier former strength. As for Victor Davion ,while I am a fan of his, I was glad that the spotlight was not squarly foucused on his exploits. He is still shown to be a great leader, but his role here was secondary to the other players.
Best? No. But great. Ok.......2000-06-24
This was a great book. But I think that it was Stackpole's worst. Now, I am Vladimir Ward fan, so naturally this book was great, until all of a sudden Vlad and Clan side of the novel just finished without warning. Though the rest of the novel was brillinat I don't think Stackpole should have just dropped Vlad. I mean he was the centre of attension at the beginning (he got the first chapter), but half through the book it was like Stackpole got bored and decided to continue Victor's and Doc's side of the story. Another problem in the novel was kai. It was like some else wrote him. He didn't have the same attitude as he did in other novels. He was sort of distant and cold in this. Still great novel and worth the money.
This was the best.......2000-05-07
This one kept me going, for a book of its size I read it fast. The book was too interesting to put down.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting Trash.......2000-03-10
This book is not going to win the Pulitzer prize but I have to admit it was ENTERTAINING. If you want something just for fun with no literary value (like Jackie Collins) this book is for you. It was a page turner for me but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for a serious read.
The Absolute Ultimate Hollywood Trashy Novel!.......2000-01-22
Do you want this book? If you're facing a long plane trip, a week at the beach, minor surgery, or a case of the flu, you NEED this book. Mike Walker of the National Enquirer gives us everything inquiring minds want to know about Charmain Burns, ravishing Southern sex goddess with a pathological temper streak, serious firearms, no inhibitions, and studly playmates of several sexes. Even as your conscience is whispering, "God, is this trash," all the rest of you is cheering, "Bleeping A! " And the pages just fly by. The story never slows down and the characters are just similar enough to ones we have read about on Walker's usual turf to make us wonder. I hope Mike Walker is a lightning typist and has many, many more ideas for books. A star is born.
WOW!.......2000-01-15
Never has a book so enthralled me as this one. I just couldn't put it down. I love to read, but I must say this is the best book I have read in a long time. Move over Stephen King. There's a new guy in town! I've been an avid reader of the National Enquirer for many years, but I know Mike Walker's greatest achievement is this book. I have never gotten so caught up in a character. Charmain Burns makes you fall in love with her, feel sorry for her, and hate her, plus she makes you laugh and cry. The ending of the book was to die for! And where did he come up with this character Randak 2000? Awesome! If Mike Walker writes any more novels, this is one fan who'll be first to buy and read it.
Malicious Intent.......2000-01-12
Like the "Godfather," this is one of those rare booksthat you just can't put down. It's laugh-out-loud funny,fast-paced, and sex-x-x-y. Just when you thought that Hollywood glitzhas worn thin the proverbial carpet, here's a juicy read that's as new and riviting and outrageous as its author - who's on the National Enquirer TV show and on Howard Stern. It's no wonder Howard loves this guy. He`s got all this inside scandal. And if you read between the lines, you'll recognize who these celebrities are. Walker does an end run past the stars and Hollywood powerbrokers who would otherwise sic their lawyers on him to shut him up -or their henchmen to bust his kneecaps. Hollywood is bound to make a movie of this, but no film can get inside the heads of these intriguing characters the way this book does. You want a great read? This book is for you.
A Saucy Send-up of Tinseltown.......1999-12-16
A fun, frolicking send-up of Hollywood that's encased in a thriller format, this book hooked me at some visceral level and kept me there the wild ride through.

Book Description
Samantha Parker is not a cop or a private investigator. She's a nosy paralegal with a talent for snooping, so when a handsome stranger walks into her office and gives her twenty-five thousand dollars to have her find out who is following him, she can't resist taking his case, even if she doesn't believe him.
The background check on Ronald Gregory proves that he has been in trouble with the law before. Upon discovering this, Sam seriously considers telling him to take his money and get lost, but she has two problems. The first is that she's broke and on the verge of eviction by her cranky old landlord, Mrs. Bennett. The second reason, which is equally important, is that she is extremely attracted to this hunk. On the other hand, she also finds it all very suspicious that he came to her when he could have easily gone to a professional investigator. That thought alone won't release itself from her brain, but she wants answers.
In order to get a handle on Ronald, Sam decides to follow him for a while. It is during this time that she observes that he hangs out with some pretty shady characters. When Sam asks him about them, he tells her that they are like family and have always been there for each other, until now. He explains to her that his "friends" are involved in drug dealing, money laundering, robbery and murder. Although he is not happy about the arrangement, they are still his friends so he continues to allow them to use his business to hide their criminal activities. They know he no longer wants to be involved in their dealings, and their relationship has become stressed to say the least. As time goes on, Ronald senses he is being ousted. He knows what they are capable of and becomes convinced they are plotting a way to kill him and take over his business. But he is determined to take them down before they have a chance, and asks Sam to help.
When Sam doesn't hear from him again, she can't understand why and decides to take things into her own hands and goes out looking. That's when the search takes a turn from finding out who is following Ronald, to finding Ronald himself.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and sassy mystery--very enjoyable.......2007-02-09
Samantha (Sam) Parker works as a freelance paralegal, but she stretches the definition pretty hard, so when a man walks into her office and pays her twenty-five thousand dollars to find out who's following him, she is quick to agree. Twenty-five thousand dollars is real money. Too much money, in fact. There's something wrong with the story and something wrong with the whole setup.
Calling in help from local private detectives and eventually the FBI, Sam learns that her client may not be the nice guy he pretended to be--and might be involved with an organized crime group. Worse, when Sam is checking out the home her client claimed as his own, she meets a sexy guy--who just happens to be the head of that crime family. Sam can't deny the attraction, but can she really be falling for a gangster? And is that nice-guy act the real Matt, or does is he hiding secrets?
When the FBI asks her to carry a wire and continue her relationship with Matt, Sam feels trapped--and in danger. If Matt finds her with a bug, she really could be in trouble.
Author Maria Pease writes with a breezy style that involves the reader in Sam's life, makes us care about her boyfrend dilemmas, concerned about the way her friend's marriage is self-destructing, and really want her to discover that Matt, the gangster leader, really is a knight behind his tarnished armor. I would have liked to see a bit more of a bang out of the bug in Sam's phone, and Sam's relationship with private detective Frank was weird enough that I wanted either more or less of it, but these are minor quibbles. With plenty of plot twists, MALICIOUS INTENT is sure to please.
A page turner.......2007-01-20
Once you start you won't stop. A great mystery with all the angles and twists. Just when you think you have it figured out something new pops up. Intelligently written with all loose ends wrapped up. A must read.

Book Description
Hardworking New Orleans environmental lawyer Rebecca Boudreaux's life just got substantially more complicated and dangerous because of the new case that her public interest law firm plans to file on behalf of citizens living in the Cancer Alley area of Louisiana. The focus of her case is River Road Recyclers, or Triple R, an oilfield waste recycling business that recently expanded its operations to illegally accept hazardous wastes. Rebecca must reveal how the company has doctored and falsified reports submitted to the government, spewed enormous amounts of toxic pollutants daily to the air and water near her clients' homes, and caused devastating health effects to her clients, all of which could have been avoided had the company just operated as it was required to under the law. Her efforts are hampered when her inside informants keep mysteriously dying, her clients are terrorized, her key witness is forced to hide in a rundown shack in the bayou until trial begins, and her own life is at risk. When Rebecca collapses in the courtroom and is rushed to the hospital on the first day of trial, her boss, Joe Cairns, steps in to litigate the case in her place. The drama climaxes as he exposes whether Rebecca's best friend, her steamy new love interest, the directors of the greedy and corrupt "recycling" company, or someone else has been acting . . . With Malicious Intent.

Reviewer: Marlo's Mom (Costa Mesa, CA). I'm very impressed this first effort by M.T. Kingsley. Great characters, romance, and lots of good plot twists in a story that shows the author knows a lot about environmental issues and the law. A very fast read. I look forward to the next book.

Good effort by Mr. Kingsley. It's all here. Legal twists, mysterious characters and a generous dose of romance. Kept me reading past my bedtime!
French Quarter, Here I Come.......2004-10-15
This book has it all: legal drama, romance, and incredible detail of places to see and be seen in Louisiana. It made me want to take a trip to New Orleans immediately! The main character is extremely likeable; you want her to succeed in all of her endeavors. As the previous reviewer noted, there are plenty of plot twists to keep you turning the pages, and many characters are not what they seem. I highly recommend it!
Fabulous First Novel.......2004-10-14
With Malicious Intent is a zippy legal thriller with some great plot twists. It is very accurate in its depiction of an environmental lawsuit in the bayous of Louisianna. Most of the characters are not necessarily what they seem. Great descriptions bring this area of the country to life. A fun read!

Book Description
Before. In the Autumn of 1888 Jack the Ripper murdered five prostitutes in London, England, in the most gruesome manner imaginable. The murders remain unsolved to this day. Present Day. When, in 2004, prostitutes in Deerfield Beach, Florida are murdered, Broward Sheriff's Office Chief Henry Patterson enlists the aid of ex-MPD detective Jack Lacey and his friend, Jeff Stone, to help in the search for the killer. A person who signs himself Jack the Little Ripper sends letters to the police. Seven prostitutes are murdered, after which the killer vanishes, only to resurface again a year later. Lacey believes a copycat killer, one who has studied Jack the Ripper's methods extensively, is responsible. With the help of the Internet and a lot of research, he begins to discover the motive behind the prostitute murders and to arrive at the truth.
