"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda. But the situation is not so simple, and in this complex and wrenching book, he explains why the Rwandan genocide should not be written off as just another tribal dispute.

The "stories" in this book's subtitle are both the author's, as he repeatedly visits this tiny country in an attempt to make sense of what has happened, and those of the people he interviews. These include a Tutsi doctor who has seen much of her family killed over decades of Tutsi oppression, a Schindleresque hotel manager who hid hundreds of refugees from certain death, and a Rwandan bishop who has been accused of supporting the slaughter of Tutsi schoolchildren, and can only answer these charges by saying, "What could I do?" Gourevitch, a staff writer for the New Yorker, describes Rwanda's history with remarkable clarity and documents the experience of tragedy with a sober grace. The reader will ask along with the author: Why does this happen? And why don't we bother to stop it? --Maria Dolan

    Book Description

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. In April 1994, the Rwandan government called upon everyone in the Hutu majority to kill each member of the Tutsi minority, and over the next three months 800,000 Tutsis perished in the most unambiguous case of genocide since Hitler's war against the Jews. Philip Gourevitch's haunting work is an anatomy of the war in Rwanda, a vivid history of the tragedy's background, and an unforgettable account of its aftermath. One of the most acclaimed books of the year, this account will endure as a chilling document of our time.

My prep for going to Rwanda was reading this book. This is a snapshot of the state Rwanda was in during the 100 days and the aftermath. However, much has been done to repair the damage. This is a time of reconciliation and healing. Go to Rwanda and see for yourself. It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Will really let you see into this tradgedy........2007-05-29

What a great book. Such insight and it really helps you understand what happened in Rwanda. Especially the history of all the long ago violence and things that have happened over the years. Great book and a must read for everyone.

This could happen everywhere or anywhere in the world. Can really open your eyes into how much we all could be killers or saviors at any one time.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Heartbreak of Hate.......2007-04-10

Gourevitch's jarring telling of the atrocities of hate hit with an imact of severe sorrow. The overwhelming scale of the murders in Rwanda are incomprehensible. It is sad to realize that in this age people allow hate and propoganda to rule their lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-27

This book was very well written and informative about the genocide that occurred in Rwanda.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking stories from Rwanda.......2007-03-19

This is a superb book, a collection of interviews and incidents from the genocide in Rwanda. There are portraits of unimaginable betrayal, brutality and horror, but also of heroism--the owner of the Hotel Rwanda, for instance. The description of the conduct of the "refugee" camps is particularly useful as a warning on what is likely to happen in the next crisis, and should force us to re-examine our ways of providing relief for people in distress across the world.

5 out of 5 stars The 101 and X99 level book on Computing.......2007-03-16

I studied this book for my Intro to Computing class and found very interesting. This book covers topics beyond computing namely data communications as well. It also discusses the history or evolution of digital computing, worldwide web, software development processes, hardwares, network types and topologies, cyber crimes, and so many other things. This book is more than enough. It definitely addicts students like me and influences them to choose Info Sys, Info Tech, or Computer Science as their major. I believe this book is suitable for both introductory or survey courses "101" and Independent Learning courses "X99"; simply, this book is well written.

One of the questions I hear most often from people who dream of a new career is "am I too old to get started?" Susan Crandell's book gives hope to those who dream of starting a new career but wonder if it is too late. What matters more than your age is your ability to do the job and to sell yourself to the people who can hire you. This book offers real life examples of people who have dared to go after their dreams. It gives uplifting advice from a wise author who has been there herself. Read it and be inspired to go after your own dream! Tag Goulet, co-author of Dream Careers: How to Quickly Break Into a Fab Job!

Can't decide which is more memorable: the extraordinary life stories of mid-life re-tooling and re-commitment to life and self (including the author's own), or the author's narrative thread: full of useful data, wise synthesis and uplifting commentary. A must for anyone approaching or just saying good-by to mid-life, however YOU define it.

4 out of 5 stars Thinking About Tomorrow: Reventing Yourself at Midlife.......2007-02-28

This was a nice book with great stories to provoke one to think about the possibilities at Midlife. While most of the stories were of value, they were stories of those that had a comfortable amount of savings/retirement built up enabling them to make these moves. Certainly, it is desirable to be at that point in ones life where they can afford to stop having a level of income and make the changes that are described in this book.

A worthy set of stories for those who are financially comfortable.

5 out of 5 stars This book inspired me............2007-01-08

Susan Crandell's Thinking About Tomorrow is essential reading for anyone who has ever thought, "There's gotta be something more." Crandell found 45 real-life heroes--all over 40--who stopped worrying about what other people thought long enough to discover their hearts' desires, and re-engineer their lives.

Some of her heroes are offbeat (a man who found the courage to become a woman, a fitness instructor who turned into a professional Celine Dion impersonator), some predictable (the couple who had a baby in their 50s, the businessman who dropped out to start another business), and some are just plain passionate (like the hair colorist who has turned himself into a true Iron Man). But in each story, Crandell really nails the essence of what makes some of us ripe for reinvention, and how to smooth away the bumps on life's new path. After reading this, I'll never call those turning points anything as dreary as "midlife crises" again.

This book is completely worthless. I bought it for a class only because I had to. It doesn't have anything in it that's not already common sense. I didn't learn anything except for a few new-fangled terms for stuff that I, or for that matter anyone who's ever held a job, already know. Book Description

New York Times bestselling author John C. Maxwell reveals the surprisingly straightforward secret to daily success and fulfillment. Most of us look at our days in the wrong way. We overexaggerate yesterday. We overestimate tomorrow. We underestimate today. The truth is that the most important day you will experience is today. Making today your masterpiece is the key to success. Maxwell offers twelve decisions and disciplines-he calls it his daily dozen-that can be learned and mastered by any person to achieve success. He teaches how to possess possibilities, remain focused, enjoy good health, exhibit stability, hold an advantage, be tenacious, experience fulfillment, exercise options, sense inner peace, feel significant, receive direction, and learn to grow. These lessons are simple, but the gap between knowing and doing is greater than the gap between ignorance and knowledge. In TODAYMATTERS, Maxwell teaches how to close that problematic gap.

4 out of 5 stars Maxwell has done it again, but in a new way!.......2007-07-09

Maxwell has done it again, but in a new way! Maxwell has written some of the classics on leadership and living, and he takes a fresh and basic look at life in this book. While he still uses his principle driven style of instruction, he strips away a layer and lets us into his life. In "Today Matters" Maxwell gives us insight into his "daily dozen." These are his twelve decisions made throughout his life for various reasons and the practices he associates with them. Phenomenal place to start for anyone looking to bring more discipline to their life or ministry. I consider myself an advanced "daily practice" guy and I found this book exciting and invigorating. His perspective on why today is so important and a plethora of other special insights make this book a must read. Dave Tilma

5 out of 5 stars Great principles you can apply today........2007-05-09

You only have today. And what you do (or don't do) today bears much significance. Today Matters is practical and well written, giving insights from someone who has lived many significant, meaningful days. If you're looking for a book that helps guide you into making every day count, John Maxwell's Today Matters is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars This book will change your life-Best book on leadership........2007-01-23

This is by far the best book on leadership. It covers everything that one needs to know on leadership. Most book, as they cover leadership, talks about the attitude, action and discipline but John Maxwell has taken leadership to a greater level by incdluding health. As a nutritionist and working in a hospital, I see that most people forsake their health to succeed and then I watch them having to slow down to catch up to life and find life real priorities which is first our relationship with ourselves and with others. People forget, without you there is no leader, so if you forsake your health to succeed you will die not accomplishing what you intended to accomplish. LIke most leaders Maxwell learned the hard way, he had a heart attack that almost killed him. The book covers everything one needs to know, impacting your world everyday and not putting it off for later. Today Matters. What we do today impacts what we do tomorrow. This book was so good that I gave a seminar of leadership based on this book and got a standing ovation. Everyone wanted to talk to me. I encourage everyone to get this book and do the exercise at the end of each chapter.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-06-27

This book has a lot of great principles for taking action today and making your tomorrow better.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Practical.......2006-05-06

This is the second book that I have read by John C. Maxwell, and boy am I glad I did. I am currently on my second reading of this book.

This book is the kind of book that you can review every so often to just make sure you are still on track, and firm up some decisions you may have made, but are letting slack.

I chose to read this book a chapter per day. This means that it actually takes two weeks to read if you don't skip a day, though it can be read MUCH faster. I just read it the first time through and didn't do any of the practical exercises that follow each chapter. I don't recommend you do it this way.

If I had to do it all over again, which I am doing, I would do the practical exercises as I came to them. I think you will get the most benefit by putting things into action. Start moving on them right away, and you will begin to see a change.

This book is very readable, it isn't dense at all. The material though simplistic, which is a good thing, can bring about deep changes if you apply it.

If you have read other books of the self-help, motivational type you might read an example or two that you have read elsewhere. This wasn't a problem for me, and all of the examples are very appropriate for the material presented.

I liked this book so much that I bought a copy for my Mother. I hope that she reads it and passes it on to the rest of the family. This seems like a book that would be good to read as a family, and would benefit from discussion. The sooner you get your children reading this book, the better. If they buy into it while they are young, look out world!

5 out of 5 stars "INTO THE LIGHT-TOMORROW'S MEDICINE TODAY!".......2007-08-09

DR. Campbell's book "into the Light" is a must read if you believe in alternative medicine. It is sad that we can't get the FDA to approve of this life-saving treatment. On a scale of 1-5 stars it is 10 stars. This treatment saved my mother's life when conventional medicine put her in the hospital 4 times within one month. When you can't get a doctor to heal you, then try getting a UVBI treatment as stated by Dr. Campbell.

1 out of 5 stars Into the Light - Tomorrow's Medicine Today!: Tomorrow's Medicine Today.......2007-01-10

If you want a historical perspective on the H2O2 studies conducted during the past century, this is the book. I should have saved my money. I recommend "Flood Your Body With Oxygen: Therapy For Our Poluted World" by Ed McCabe. McCabe explains it so that the information is understandable and usefull.

1 out of 5 stars wow.... all the gullible, enter here.......2006-07-16

This is yet another example of the chicanery and pseudoscientific nonsense that people use to fleece the desperate and ill of their hard earned money. It sickens me that people like this offer false hope in order to turn a buck. Gee, this hasn't been done by mainstream medicine in over 50 years the author points out. Go figure, that's because it doesn't work. Last time I checked, sitting in a tanning booth was more likely to cause cancer than cure it, and in a very pseudoscientific way, that's what the author's telling you to do. As usual, this "enlightened healer" is only trying to help people by pointing out things that those evil doctors don't want you to know, because by golly, light therapy isn't profitable for them. So... plunk your money here! because writing this drivel has been VERY profitable for Mr. Douglas.

Also, for the record, you can get anybody to testify that "XYZ worked for me, it cured my herpes!" or whatever you want them to spout, and you can prove anything with an underpowered "randomized controlled clinical trial". You run the same trial 20 times with 10 patients, you'll eventually get the results you want to see. Then you find a "journal" of bogus medicine to publish it, and voila. You can reference anything. Unfortunately, most people reading these books have an incomplete (at best) understanding of the science and statistics involved in these "trials" (and to be fair, the drug company trials as well, but that's a rant for another day). This is commercialism, pure and simple, and if it makes you feel better, then by all means go play with lightbulbs, but if you think it's going to cure you of anything, then you're going to be profoundly disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2003-06-04

I was amazed at the level of detail. It's heavily documented, which is refreshing in an alternative medicine book. In fact, if what Dr. Douglass says is true (and I'm pretty confident it is), then the mainstream medical establishment has a lot of explaining to do about why they have rejected and ignored light-based therapies that have produced excellent, well-documented clinical or double-blind results over the course of a century.

He also does an excellent job in not overselling his claims. He pulls no punches about when and where the therapy failed to work. When it does work, he also doesn't hold back in his enthusiasm. Some might be put off by this last fact, but I think his presentation is well-balanced, overall.

My only criticism is that, while most documentation is excellent, I wish the author had paid a bit more attention to completing all of his references. I have a second edition copy, which includes a reference on page 232 to something called, _AIDS - The End of Civilization_, Chapter 6. Unfortunately, there are no other descriptions of that book that I could find, such as who wrote or published it. I learned later that it was another book by the same author, but that fact should have been included in the reference.)

Another example of an inaccurate reference is on page 236, where he mentions a blue light therapy performed on a little girl in Chapter 14. Unfortunately, Chapter 14 is about a doctor with AIDS and how he has dealt with this personal crisis. It has no reference to either blue light therapy or the little girl.

Such mistakes aside, the overall value of the book is tremendous. I recommend it heartily to anyone whose mind isn't closed like a steel trap.

I also recommend another book by the author called Hydrogen Peroxide, Medical Miracle. The two books should really be considered companions of each other.

5 out of 5 stars Factual history and indications of this excellent therapy.......1999-09-06

Dr. Douglass is a leading American expert on Photoluminescence (aka Blood Irradiation, Biophotonic Therapy, etc.). In this book he provides a great deal of very useful original source material from the early American clinical trials of this formidable therapy. He has travelled to Russia to consult with physicians there and includes some material from recent Russian sources as well. The book is written in an engaging style, with many insights into topics related to this therapeutic use of the chemiluminescent property of human blood cells. The abundant evidence from this book makes it clear that mainstream medicine has allowed an excellent therapy to slip through the cracks. Book Description

Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled media. BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW, her most concise text, provides a precise, issues-oriented approach and "solves" some of the toughest course challenges: engaging students, linking concepts from chapter to chapter, easily monitoring students' progress and simplifying lecture prep. Show students how biology matters: opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter: since students have a difficult time linking concepts, the authors created a new "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another. Monitor students' progress with ease: BiologyNow? offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor grade book (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn on TurningPoint content and software. Enjoy easier lecture prep: The new PowerLecture tool integrates all electronic chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links, bulleted text slides, and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources?arranged by chapter section?is at your fingertips.

I cannot say enough how wonderful the photographs in this little book are. There are literally thousands of laughs here. You will be showing this book to family and friends for years. I think my favorite photo is (and it's hard to pick, because there are so many) is of the turtle in the air who thinks she is doing a traditional Irish dance. I laughed outloud at the one of the dog with the bag on her head too and I really enjoyed seeing that mouse foil that mousetrap. This books with animal photos and very human like captions are meant for children of all ages from eight to eighty to enjoy as they leaf through the pages and see these wonderful creatures as they have their adventures in an uncertain world.

You cannot get a better message and uplifting photos for $10. It is such a bargin. Yes, I know the preview here at Amazon does not show you much, but this little book will inspire you, make you think about life, and is a wonderful little gift to a friend or loved one. It is also fine for children. I like "Tomorrow," "Blue Day" (perfect for friends feeling sad), and "Friends to the End." I love this author work and if he is reading this, thank you.

I recently attended a function that John Maxwell happened to be speaking at. He is a very engaging and insightful presenter. I had to pick up a copy of one of his books to hear more about what this guy had to say.

This is a well written and easy read. Anyone that reads this will come away with something. The book is well structured and I think it should be required reading for college students.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all of the life's pressures, this book will aid in prioritizing. John Maxwell lays out some very useful techniques for managing the clutter in your life. More importantly, this book suggests that "the things you do today, will be realized tomorrow." Just buy it.

A friend loaned me this book by John Maxwell and after the first chapter, I put it down to go buy my own copy! I knew I needed to highlight the great, practical advice on how to live a balanced life that makes a difference. Leaders often forget to "feed themselves" and this book is definitely great food for thought! Maxwell's Daily Dozen will help you get a handle on your day to day living and in the process help you become a more effective and efficient leader. I have used his tenents in several motivational speeches in the last few months and in fact, used his book as a "speakers" gift at a recent conference. I highly recommend this book and the "plan for improvement" included in the last chapter!

    5 out of 5 stars It does!.......2007-07-17

My oldest son made Father's Day 2007 special with Today Matters. Having it gave me the idea that all my guys should have a copy, so I purchased a copy for my youngest son and my son-in-law. I believe it will make a difference to the men in my life ... and also their boys!

Dave Tilma

5 out of 5 stars How to live better today.......2007-06-10

John Maxwell wrote a power packed book on Why today matters and how to live better today so that tomorrow will be better than yesterday. Any person who is looking to grow in any area of life will be challenged, inspired and motivated to make some today changes. At the end of each chapter John gives clear guidance on how to implement what was written. The ending is awesome. The chapter on Growth was very inspiring. 12 things that matter today: Attitude, Priorities, Health, Family, Thinking, Commitment, Finances, Faith, Relationships, Generosity, Values, Growth. The best quote ever: "Yesterday ended at midnight, today is worth 2 tomorrow's." Awesome Book.
