Book Description
A riveting combat memoir of an Iwo Jima hero-the youngest Marine in history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor
Here is an eloquent, plainspoken combat memoir of a young soldier who belongs in a class with World War II combat hero Audie Murphy. At the height of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Jack Lucas and three other Marines attacked a Japanese pillbox. When two enemy grenades landed in their midst, Private Lucas jumped on both grenades, just as they were exploding. His buddies were saved, but Lucas was torn apart. Miraculously, he survived-but just barely. For this brave action seventeen year- old Jack Lucas from North Carolina became the youngest soldier in the twentieth century, and the youngest Marine in history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. In Indestructible, we learn of the rocky road that led Jack Lucas to Iwo Jima-from his lying about his age to join the Marines to his going AWOL in order to join the action in the Pacific-and his arduous, frightening recovery following his heroic sacrifice. Today, wherever Jack Lucas speaks crowds gather to honor him and pay tribute to Marine heritage and pride as well as to pay their respects to one of America's greatest generations.
Customer Reviews:
Tough Story about a Tough Guy.......2007-02-15
Despite what some other reviewers had to say, it should be noted at the outset that Jack Lucas didn't finish high school, and obviously didn't go to Columbia for a writing degree. He simply lied his way into enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 14, and ultimately conned his way into frontline units until he finally reached combat at Iwo Jima. Having wanted to be a Marine and fighting since he was 11, his dedicated pursuit of his goal seems impossible to believe, but it did happen, and this is his story.
Having met Jack, he is exactly like what the story sounds like. He is proud, patriotic, and unabashed in his belief that his actions that day were less significant than those who never returned. I found the story of his life after the war to be interesting, especially what his own wife would attempt later.
This is not going to tell the story of the whole war, and isn't a literary work that rivals Shakespeare, but it is one man's story, and well worth the time to read it.
212 Pages of Self-Praise.......2007-02-06
Mr. Lucas has just spent 212 pages doing nothing more than patting himself on the back and telling the public how big a hero he is. He also spends a great amount of time in stating how he relishes the limelight he is in and will go to any length to exploit the Medal of Honor to his own use. From some of key phrases in the book, the reader would think he was the only Marine on Iwo Jima. While I highly respect him for the action for which the medal was awarded, I do not respect the idea of using it to ones advantage. The author also seems to think that what he cannot accomplish with the Medal of Honor around his neck, his two fist will get for him.
Not a perfect story, but interesting nevertheless........2006-11-26
There can be little doubt that this book wouldn't have been written if this aging hero had not been singled out by President Clinton during his presidency in a nationally televised State-of-the-Union address. Mr. Lucas was the President's special guest for the occasion, and one can understand why. While Lucas is an unquestioned military hero, he was less of a hero to his children and his first wife. (Those who were on the receiving end of his quick and violent temper may not view him in the hero light either.) A self-described womanizer, Lucas was the perfect foil for the Clinton plot to bolster the President's image by profiling a man who is living proof that no matter how badly you conduct your private life, it doesn't have to interfere with your service to country. This book will read like a poem to Clintonites, but may blanch a bit to the few of who still believe personal morality matters to whatever task you set yourself to.
Lucas is a hero, and his professions of faith in the Lord who protected him not only on Iwo Jima but in several other major life crisis redeems this book and makes it worthwhile. But if your looking for the ALL American hero, better look elsewhere for reading material.
good, but less than I expected.......2006-08-26
I am a retired Marine and I generally read several books on the Marine Corps each year; I had never heard of Jack Lucas before this book. But, I came to believe that his discplinary issues, has resulted in the Marines excluding him from the general USMC history, we teach our young Marines at recruit trainng or OCS.
I am glad I bought the non-abridged audiobook edition (part of daily commute). Its audio quality was pretty good. It is a good recounting of history, but someone should have listed to it before it was finalized on CD. There were repeations of several sentences which made we wonder if my CD player was on the blink. In addition, references to "126" should have redone they should have been redone as "1st Bn, 26 Marine Regiment". Better for non-Marine listeners.
The Best War Story Ever!.......2006-08-07
If people are expecting another war story, they are going to get a whole lot more. D. K. Drum does an unbelieveable job telling the incredible story of the youngest Medal of Honor recipient in the Twentieth Century. Jack Lucas is so humble about the glory that has been thrust upon him. He handled fame as well as any 17 year old could be expected too, but after all we have no one to compare him too. He is unique and spectacular. If you don't like this one, you aren't a true patriot. By far the best war story ever!

Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Jem struggles to maintain the status quo at home in Trenton, New Jersey, when the family men join the war for independence.
There are signs of rebellion in the Emerson household several years before the actual American Revolution hits in 1776! Brought up in a relatively liberal household, Jemima Emerson is quite a challenge for her tutor, John Reid, who is known as a Tory with strong ties to England. How could Jem's parents be friends with a man who opposes American freedom? Jem longs for freedom on every level, in the home and her homeland--and John represents the forces that restrict her.
Jem and her family soon find themselves fighting for freedom in whatever ways they can in the Revolutionary War. Before long, Jem discovers that there is much more to Mr. Reid than she ever imagined. Her feelings about him change when Jem realizes that John shares her love of freedom--and will risk his life to defend it.

Another of my Favorites!!!!.......2007-10-05
Jem is probably my favorite character out of all the Ann Rinaldi books!! She's stubborn and high spirited , I reread this book every chance I get and never tire of it. I don't know which Ann Rinaldi books are my favorite the Revoultionary or the Civil War? But I do know that I Love them all!!!
Fantastic characters, history, and romance!.......2007-05-19
This is a great, fast read!! The main characters are well-developed with distinctive personalities. The historical context is interesting and detailed. The romance is very sweet, without being cheesy. It is a fun read with some touching, sad moments mixed in.
Time Enough For A Good Read.......2006-03-01
Romance, tragedy, and life lessons are all wonderfully displayed in this novel, set during the period of the Revolutionary War. TIME ENOUGH FOR DRUMS, by Ann Rinaldi, is the story of Jem, a rebellious Patriot teenage girl, whose family is torn apart by the war. Her father is persecuted for not selling tea, her mother has a war "secret" of her own, the war beckons both of her brothers, and on top of all that, she clashes with her Tory tutor. Through the ups and downs of her life, Jem learns some important life lessons the hard way but comes out on top, and learns that people are not always what they seem. The reader learns that there is always, "time enough for drums." This novel keeps you wanting to know more and more about Jem and what is going to happen next in her life. It is also an additional bonus, how Ann Rinaldi uses accurate historical events, to base her book upon. If you love to be entertained while you read, than this book is definitely for you!

This is the best of all Ann Rinaldis books (I have read all of them). This book has the most interesting characters and a great plot. Everyone will enjoy Jem and her tutor and what happens between them. I have read this book probably 15 times and never get tired of it. The hints of romance and interest to this book. It teaches you about history without making you ever feel like you were in history class.

Close observation at Chosin, although not under fire.......2000-08-26
In general, this is about (part of) Chosin operation. The author was the commander of H&R company of 1st Battalion, 1st Marine during Chosin operation. He gave a good account about the hardship the marines endured during the operation. Mind that his battalion was assigned the task of taking Hill 1081 and wrestled the control of Funchilin Pass out from superior Chinese Communist Part (CCP) forces. Unfortunately, he was in such a position that he spent most of his time staying very close to battalion HQ and could not provide more details about the fighting. (Interesting readers should look up S.L.A. Marshall's "Battle at Best". There is a chapter dedicated to the battle of Funchilin Pass.) But, it is still a good book with the first hand account of the Chosin. Of course, nobody who are interesting in Korea War would want to miss the two very valuable reports about CCP troops' attack patterns, written by S.L.A. Marshall himself, attached at the end of the book.

Book Description
Winner of a Southwest Book Award for Nonfiction.
Although most accounts of the Civil War's New Mexico campaign have focused on the Confederate effort, Distant Bugles, Distant Drums brings to life the epic march of 1,000 men recruited from Colorado's towns, farms, and mining camps to fight 3,000 Confederate soldiers in New Mexico.
Drawing on a host of previously overlooked diaries, letters, and contemporary newspaper accounts, military historian Flint Whitlock tells the stories of Union heroes such as Colorado governor William Gilpin and Colonels John Slough, John Chivington, Kit Carson, and Edward Canby, along with average soldiersmen on both sides who marched, fought, and overcame immense distances and privations.
On their way to Colorado's rich mines in search of gold and silver for the Confederacy's dwindling coffers, Confederate leader Henry Hopkins Sibley and his 3,000 Texans won a series of engagements with Union troops along the Rio Grande until they were turned back by the ragtag, hastily assembled Coloradoans in an epic conflict at Glorieta Pass, just east of Santa Fe. The western theater shaped the fate of the West and of the nation, and its story is a powerful one of miners, farmers, and peacetime officers turning themselves overnight into soldiers and combat leaders. Distant Bugles, Distant Drums looks into the soldiers' lives, providing a detailed look at life on the Western frontier missing from other books on the Civil War.
Historians and readers will find in Distant Bugles, Distant Drums a fresh perspective on the battle for the nation and on the nineteenth-century West

Book Description
Li'l Dan, a slave on a Southern plantation, loves to play his drum. When a company of Union soldiers announce that the slaves have been set free, Dan has no place to go, so he follows the soldiers, who make him their mascot. But Confederate soldiers attack, and Dan discovers that he is the only one who can save his friends.
The only children's book ever written and illustrated by legendary American artist Romare Bearden, Li'l Dan, the Drummer Boy was just recently discovered. Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. has written a personal introduction to the book, describing his own memories of the artist while Bearden created this memorable tale.
On an accompanying CD, Dr. Maya Angelou, three-time Grammy Award winner for spoken word recordings, reads the text.

Power of the Drum.......2005-01-15
LI'L DAN, THE DRUMMER BOY is a story about a young boy who uses his special talents to save a company of Union soldiers. Dan learned to play the drum as a result of a lot of perseverance and lessons from a slave who lived on the same plantation. One day, he runs into a group of Union soldiers who explain that he and all other slaves are now free. Later, when the company runs into some Confederate soldiers, Dan uses quick thinking and his drum to try and save the day.
LI'L DAN, THE DRUMMER BOY is not just a pleasant and educational children's book, but also an important addition to African-American literary history. The book is the only children's book written and illustrated by the renowned artist, Romare Bearden. The illustrations in the book reflect his trademark artistic style, and as a result, the book not only sheds light on the Civil War era but is an excellent introduction to an important African-American artist.
The book also includes an audio CD which features Maya Angelou reading the story aloud. While her performance is not breathtaking, it does allow children to either read along or follow along with the illustrations as she reads. Overall, this is a wonderfully packaged piece of children's literature.

Brilliant Artwork, Important Story.......2003-10-14
My 7 year old daughter wants to be both a drummer, like her father and an artist like her aunt. Her two favorite books this year are Lil Dan and DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! This book is about a slave who learns to make and play drum sounds and when he is freed, through his drumming, he saves others. DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! is about a little Cuban barrio working-class girl who is not allowed to play Conga drums becasue she is a girl. She and her best friend sneak to the largest Latino festival in the United States: Little Havana Calle Ocho Festival and she finds a way to show everyone that she was born to be a drummer. Both tales moved my daughter (and me). If you have a creative child that loves art and music, these are the two books to get not only for their inspiring tales, but also for the lively writing and the beautiful illustrations.

Unfocused introduction to War Games.......2007-01-18
I had actually read the War Games series as well as War Crimes before finally getting around to this one. I can tell you it didn't make that much of a difference whether or not I read it before or after. There are a lot of stories in this trade paperback, but the only one that interested me that much was the final one where Stephanie Brown takes over as Robin for a short while. In fact it is so short, I can barely even count her as being one of the Robins as it was only for about 49 days.
A lot of the characters involved in War Games sort of get their own stories in here. Leslie Tompkins, trying to help the unfortunate, as she is abducted to try and give birth to a baby when the mother's been shot. You get some nice backstory here about Leslie and her relationship to Bruce and Alfred. Mr. Feeze makes a brief appearance but doesn't exactly play the villain.
There's a boring story about Tarantula and an ancient legend known as the Mugre (don't ask). You also see the teaming of Orpheus and Onyz. Green Arrow has a small role in this but he is wasted as he dissapears as quickly as he arrives. You see Tim Drake struggle with his promise to his father not to go out as Robin any longer and also his relationship with Stephanie, his soon to be replacement. One thing that bothered me about this was it seemed like Batman accepted her as Robin almost immediately. It seemed pretty out of character to me, but I suppose he does the same thing in Dark Knight Returns as well.
It's a crossover storyline so it is a split over Detective Comics and the Robin comics which means the artwork changes every 20 or so pages which isn't so bad. Both artistic styles are quite different but I'd have to say I prefer the way Batman is drawn in Detective Comics.
Overall it's not too bad, but there were a few stories I could have done without, and I wished we could have seen more of Stephanie as Robin in here.
A good, episodic collection of intrigue.......2005-09-11
"Batman: War Drums" is a collection of some of the latest stories in the comics. Batman has been moving from what I would have called "self-contained" storylines to some type of "expanding" storylines. Let me explain what I mean.
"Self-contained storyline:" typically a story told within four to six issues of the same comic. One storyline might run from Batman #300-#306, for example.
"Expanding" storyline: A story is much more complex, spanning several issues of several different comic titles. You read one part in Batman, finish in an issue of Robin several months later. NO MAN'S LAND, Knightfall, and Contagion are examples of such a storyline where multiple characters are involved. These type of storylines are in-depth. Batman stories seem to be moving in this direction.
However, "War Drums" has some self-contained storylines, including Batman pursuing kidnappers, a mystery at a new factory, and an encroaching gang war. What I find interesting is that in War Drums you see a combination of the two storyline types mentioned above.
You get the satisfaction of seeing one plot unfurl and complete itself. At the same time, you see a bigger picture developing around the self-contained storylines. The kidnapping, factory mishap, and scuffles that are resolved are all episodes pointing to a bigger trend in Gotham.
The work seen here, however, leads up to "War Games," which looks interesting. I hope the comics writers are learning that we are tired of following five or six titles just to get one good story. On this front, "War Drums" looks promising.
15 minutes of Fame for the New Robin...........2005-03-30
This collection collects Detective Comics #790-796 and Robin #126-128 and is written by Anderson Gabrych and Bill Willingham (Fables) and illustrated by Pete Woods and Damion Scott. The first story is a stand-alone and deals with Batman on the eve of Jason Todd's (ex-Robin) birthday. The next two stories deals with how a female Rap star has her sister missing and injured by a rival record lable and winds up in the care of Batman's long-time friend Dr. Leslie Tompkins. Leslie is kidnapped along with the injured girl and Batman is hell-bent on finding them. And to make matters worse, the rival gang is equipped with hardware courtesy of Mr. Freeze (i.e. ice bullets that melt). The story basically re-examines the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dr. Tompkins. The next two stories are by far the worst in this collection and features Tarantula (a character who I and a lot of Batman and Nightwing fans abhor). Apparently a Hispanic legend dealing with filth and grabage (literally) has come to life. Like I said this was by far the worst story in the collection.
Once you have dragged past or skipped over the former stories, the latter portion of the collection follows Stephanie Brown aka Spoiler and now the new Robin in her training to become Robin. We basically get a glimpse in her 15 minutes of fame as Robin. The stories are pretty-well written and is told from Stephanie's POV. We also get a look at Tim Drake's (ex-Robin) life as a civilian. But before he can get too comfortable, Robin's nemesis Johnny Warlock (see Robin: Unmasked) has hired a skilled killer to hunt down teenage boys at home matching Robin's physical description. It is up to Batman and the new Robin to stop the killer before she reaches Tim Drake. In between all this we get a stand-alone story featuring Zsasz. Zsasz in my opinion is a severly underestimated character. He is the Hannibal Lecter in Batman's Universe. He slits the throat of his victims and then tallies them up by cutting himself. This story is the best in this collection and the writer does a very good job of conveying Zsasz's threat and power.
I just have a single point to state here...the writer Anderson Gabyrch has this tendency to portray all African American characters as MTV marketed Rap Stars. Read the second story and you'll get my point. He is a new-comer and he has good potential (see the Zsasz story) but here his work suffers terribly because of the Tarantula story. Bill Willingham also writes well, his work shows Batman a little more light-hearted but still not bad.
This collection mainly sets the premises for the atrocious Batman War Games crossover (see my review). All in all the stories are good...not great but good. Recommended for the Batman completists.
Review from a newbie.......2004-11-14
I can't say I'm very well-versed in Batman-I only started reading Robin at the beginning of the Unmasked arc.
War Drums chronicles a time right before War Games which I am reading right now in weekly installment form.
For me, this book was heaven-sent, because I missed an issue of Robin chronicaling the very short career of the girl Robin, and this book explains exactly what happened that so many people I've talked to seem confused about.
