Book Description

“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament.”
–Los Angeles Family

When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country. Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth. Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC. Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night. Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience. In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:

• E.A.S.Y.–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier.
• S.L.O.W.–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap).
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type.
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days.

At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself. Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my quality of life.......2007-10-11

This book is a life saver for new moms or moms struggling with babies sleep patterns. I thought I was loosing it until my father gave me this book. A short easy to implement program to train your baby to sleep regularly.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible! Not based on any science.......2007-10-02

I bought this book when my baby was four months old. I tried every technique in there (early waking, cluster feedings) and nothing helped. I ended up baby "Happy Child, Healthy Sleep Habits" and he basically debunked all her theories with science and baby sleep studies. I tried his theories and now I have a great baby who developed into a toddler that sleeps so well! This book is seriously a waste of time, I need to sell mine or give it away. This woman has no real or scientific experience with babies, I would love for to come to my house and use it on my child, because I will promise you that her stuff doesn't work. Plus, at nine months, giving cluster feedings won't help, babies wake up at that age because of habit or neurology, not because they're hungry. It was just such a waste of money!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Baby Book Ever.......2007-09-27

I was given this book as a gift and have since purchased it for everyone I know who is having a baby. Great Book!!

5 out of 5 stars best book.......2007-09-20

i buy this book for all my friends who are having babies. this book is just incredible. i followed it and my daughter slept through the night at six weeks. i couldn't have been more pleased. too bad i didn't have it when my son was born....
WORTH EVERY CENT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars i agreed with everything in this book! a must for first time moms and dads........2007-09-18

i picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend, and i was not disappointed. the author is a baby nurse and has a "special" way with newborns and infants, and is passing along her wisdom and experiences in this book. i found myself agreeing with everything she had to say, and have implemented her "e-a-s-y" way of caring for infants with my new baby. i also agree with the s-l-o-w technique to determine what your baby might need (why are they crying?), to avoid stuffing a pacifier in their mouth at the first sign of fussiness. one thing to note, my baby is a "textbook" baby, and it was fairly simple for us to implement these techniques. for people with colicy or super fussy babies, using this book may be more difficult and take longer to implement. ultimately, i totally agree with giving a baby a routine (not an inflexible schedule), and for treating babies like the people they are, and respecting them and their personal space. i highly recommend this book!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The last thing new parents can find time for is quiet reading, so many helpful books on infant care rely on bullet points and a "let's get to the point" writing style. Tracy Hogg, a neonatal nurse, teacher, and mother of two, uses these techniques to good effect in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Focusing on newborns and their parents, her simple programs are a blend of intelligent intuition and methods based on years of experience. The first half of the book is devoted to E.A.S.Y--her name for creating a structured daily routine for you and your baby that makes the most of your baby's awake times and also leaves time just for you. These concepts aren't designed to force your bundle of joy into not following her body's needs, but rather to create a feasible middle ground between total rigidity and on-demand food and sleep (and no time for mom to shower). If it still strikes you as too regimented, keep reading. The author makes room for differences in personal style and includes short quizzes to determine whether you're a "planner" or a "winger", and what level of daily structure you are likely to find helpful. In the same chapter, she identifies five general temperaments of infants, how to get an accurate feel for yours, and what methods of care are likely to be the most effective for his temperament. Her statement that babies prefer routine is backed up by research from the University of Denver. While most of the book relies on anecdotes to get the points across, Hogg does find room to back up some of her statements with quotes from various researchers and institutions. Included at the end of the book are assurances that E.A.S.Y. can be followed even with a colicky baby or one who's been ruling the roost for the first few months. Frustrated parents might like to read the last page first: "all the baby-whispering advice in the world is useless unless you're having a good time being a parent" is an excellent reminder to enjoy this time with all of its ups and downs. --Jill Lightner

3 out of 5 stars Some good information.......2007-08-29

I did get some vital information on putting my kiddo to sleep. But her advice drove me insane when I tried to apply it to a new born! He was just too young at 1 week to perform under her requirements and I felt like a terrible mother with an abnormal kiddo. Now that he is older (2 1/2) months much of what she writes about independence and getting your kiddo to sleep is helpful. When my son was 1-4 weeks his schedule was *his* schedule and I really just had to be there for him. I still co-sleep even though Hogg advises against it and I still like to put my kiddo to sleep in my arms. He sleeps in noisy rooms and quiet ones. The list goes on. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A WELL READ NEW PARENT CAN TAKE FROM THIS REVIEW IS THIS: read all you can even Hogg's book but always keep your instincts when it comes to raising your baby, no author is you and no one person can know your baby on a personal and visceral level the way you do. On the breastfeeding....I think her tips on the actual act of breast feeding are wonderful as for the politics I could not disagree with her more. This is a very politically and emotionally charged issue no matter your position. As for her being responsible for whether or not a woman chooses to breast feed by the opinions expressed by Hogg in this book: I do not agree. If it takes so little for a mother to quit breast feeding then maybe she just was not cut out for it. I *knew* breast feeding was the best for my kid so I do it...period. Some women just cannot or will not go the extra mile no matter what they read.

5 out of 5 stars Try and read this before the baby arrives.......2007-08-28

This book has been great for us and I believe this is largely because we read it before the baby was born and started implementing Hogg's techniques immediately. Having read both Sears/AP and Ezzo parenting books as well, we have found Hogg's methods to be a great middle ground. The EASY method is working great for us. I love her chapter on Awake activities and appropriate playing at different ages and stages. She breaks down bathing and massage techniques, as well. Her advice on using a pacifier makes so much sense. And, of course, the easy to follow charts that allow you interpret and respond to your baby's cries and movements are excellent.

Best of all though is the confidence we have in putting our baby down to sleep - because we started this from day one we were able to implement Hogg's techniques that allow us to put the baby in her crib while sleepy but still awake and watch her gently drift off to sleep on her own. Our baby has been learning how to self sooth since day one and it's amazing to watch her.

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-08-18

This book was recommeded by my OBGYN. I read a few other books but found Tracy's information and advice useful and accurate. I found her writing style to be enjoyable--like reading a good novel, therefore, I retained the information; rather than trying to recall what you should do in a particular situation.

5 out of 5 stars What a great resource.......2007-08-10

I have a 3 month old baby boy and I would highly recommed this book. In fact, I wish I had read this book earlier because it would have saved me a lot of stress. Tracey's insight is really helpful and I feel that I've connected with my baby much better since reading this book. She also provides a lot of support to women who choose not to breastfeed. I was feeling guilty for not breastfeeding especially since my son had formula issues but Tracey help to put things into perspective about it being a very personal choice and there being nothing wrong with choosing formula feeding.

5 out of 5 stars The best money you will ever spend!.......2007-08-10

This book changed my life.. for the first 8 weeks of my new baby I thought I was going to crack up. I had read that babies shoudl sleep a lot and therefore it confused me that my little one did not. It was not because she didn't like sleeping, it was because I was not reading her cues and not knowing what to expect. This book explains it all very easily and actually it is all down to common sense.. i.e reading your baby and knowing what is wrong. As soon as i read the book i could see where i was going wrong and as soon as i put my little pone on the recomended routine, my life changed forever.. she slept for long periods during the day, all night long and basically became a dream child. It is all about common sense and once you get over the initial hurdle of trying to find time to read the book, your life will be chnaged forever!

Book Description

The third book in the bestselling Baby Whisperer series -- the most comprehensive, up-close, and personal to date!

Thousands of parents have asked the Baby Whisperer to help them solve their problems. With this book you too can take advantage of the advice, insights, and parenting techniques from beloved child expert Tracy Hogg. "A problem is nothing more than a situation calling for a creative solution," she reminds us. "Ask the right questions and you'll come up with the right answers."

Once you learn how to translate banguage, the "baby-language" your infant uses to communicate needs, feelings, and opinions, you can see your child for who he or she really is -- an understanding that will serve you well as your child blossoms into the toddler years. By helping you establish a daily routine and tailor your parenting strategies according to your child's unique personality and stage of development, Tracy will teach you how to:

• Ask the Twelve Essential Questions to recognize potential problems and employ the Twelve Principles of Problem Solving -- simple troubleshooting techniques for everyday situations

• Avoid, or remedy, accidental parenting -- inadvertent adult behavior that often leads to such common parenting challenges as sleep problems, poor eating habits, separation anxiety, and tantrums

• Be a P.C. parent -- patient and conscious -- who knows how to detect prime times -- windows of opportunity for teaching babies how to get to sleep on their own, introducing bottles to breast-fed babies, toilet training, and other growth issues

• Inhibit runaway emotions and foster his or her emotional fitness -- the ability to understand and manage feelings

...and so much more. For Tracy's fans, this book will be a welcome addition to the Hogg library; for readers unfamiliar with her philosophy of care, it will open a new world of understanding and insight.

4 out of 5 stars knowledge is power!!!!!!.......2007-09-22

I did not follow the book to the word, but I sure did pick up some tips that have really helped. I thought my baby hated to be swaddled, because she would kick off the blanket all the time, the book stated that babies like to swaddled, so I gave it another shot, this time swaddling her in the front and in back, so she was more secure, and it really worked!!! That alone was worth the buy. Plus I learned how to read her signals that she was tired. If you pick up a tip here and there from a book it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars It worked for me..........2007-09-21

GENERAL COMMENT: Like every baby book I read, I try to keep an open mind. You will NOT find a book that will work for ALL babies but this book worked for mine, who I think is a text book baby.

SITUATION: I was going back to work and my baby was super needy at 6 weeks-- wanted to be helded all the time. He won't nap if I wasn't holding him. And at night, I would rock him to sleep and put him into his crib very very gently when he has fallen into DEEP sleep. Otherwise, he would CRY. But that was my fault because I HELD him alot. This would be fine if I was a stay at home mom...but if even I was, I think it would have taken it's toll on me at some point.

LIKE: I like this book because it helped with getting my baby on a good routine, nap longer, sleep on his own, and sleep longer through the night. I made my own version of the EASY plan, customize it to my baby and what worked for me...this book afterall is not the BIBLE.

RESULTS: By about 8-10 weeks, he was sleeping from 7:30-8 pm to about 4:30 am (with 1 dream feed). Now at 5 months, he sleeps from 8pm to about 7am (with 1 dream feed). He use to nap about 30 minutes at a time. After the plan, he started napping for 2 hours (slightly shorter now since he is older). He LIKES his crib and falls to sleep in about 20-30 minutes of laying down...without ANY fuss. And he is a happy healthy little boy who is 50% for weight and 80% for height.

TRANSITION PERIOD: This didn't happen overnight. I would try for a week or two and revisit the book about a thousand time to make sure I wasn't doing it wrong. He would progess and go back to his old self and progress some more. After about 2 weeks, I customize the plan. You WILL be glad to get some time for yourself and hubby when the baby goes down to sleep in the evening instead of at night. He sleeping pattern gradually falls into place. I don't believe in cry it out so the SHH/PAT worked for me. It was hard and I gave up several times. But it worked before you know it. Just give it your best try and be PATIENT AND CONSISTENT. Even now when he takes a little longer to get to sleep, I still PAT/SHH and he is out.

DON'T LIKE: The tone of the author can be a bit annoying (KNOW IT ALL) but after all, she is a super nanny and have worked with THOUSANDS of babies. This book made me PARANOID as a parent--thinking that I would just ruin my child if I made any wrong moves. But we all turned out okay and our parents didn't have this book.

CONCLUSION: Your instinct as a mom is truly the best guide but sometimes, it does get you into situations that are difficult to overcome. This book helped me better manage my baby's sleep/eating which are the biggest parts of his life. Life is so much less HECTIC for MOM, BABY and DAD.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO "CRY IT OUT!".......2007-09-09

I'm on my 2nd child, my first slept though the night from early age, and was a very easy baby to care for. But my 2nd baby was a different story! According to the BW, he is Spirited. This book helped me to help him to take regular naps and be on a good routine, with NO crying it out alone in the crib. (He is 6 months old). I read Babywise book before this one and found it WAY too strict for my spirtied boy. We are still working on sleeping through the night, but i have hope that we can accomplish that soon!

4 out of 5 stars Good common sense.......2007-09-03

I didn't like the idea of "recipe" parenting, but some of Ms Hogg's tips worked very well on our 5-month old, who is now sleeping 11-12 hours every night. I like her approach to behavioral issues, especially in toddlers. The tone is quite condescending, but if you can get past that, its a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Andrew & Kim.......2007-08-27

I'm actually on Amazon today because I'm going to buy this for a colleague who is having her first baby. This book was absolute lifesaver. Like most new parents we had absolutely no idea what the baby wanted and way too much old school advice from well-meaning friends and family. We agreed to try this book for two weeks and there was never a question as to how great the advice was.

We agree with some of the other reviews about the author's tone. Fortunately, you cannot argue with the results. Her methods were spot on accurate and our children immediately adapted to the EASY schedule.

Thanks Tracy!

Imagine a cheeky, less starchy Mary Poppins in the trenches with you and your toddler. British trained nurse and childcare consultant Tracy Hogg draws upon the key ideas in her bestselling, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and applies them to those magical and challenging years between infancy and preschool.

Hogg offers parents of toddlers clear theory and techniques described in a supportive, crisp tone, often addressing parents as "luv" or "ducky." Before trying any techniques, she urges parents to "love the toddler you have" by understanding his or her unique temperament, gifts, and special needs.

That said, Hogg introduces specific tools for engaging and managing toddlers. These include "H.E.L.P." (hold back, explain, limit, praise); "R&R" (routines and rituals to create structure and celebration), and "behavior rehearsals" (a plan to prepare toddlers for new experiences). Other chapters focus on "respectful intervention" to avoid acting out and plans to protect parents' private time. By seasoning her advice with anecdotes, sidebars, quizzes, and abundant good humor, Hogg offers companionship and common sense for parents during the toddler years. --Barbara Mackoff

4 out of 5 stars toddler help found here.......2007-04-20

this isn't as good as the baby whisperer, or maybe it's just not as insightful, but that's likely due to the fact that i don't need as much guidance now as the parent of a toddler as i did when i had a newborn and read the baby whisperer. i like that she has a quiz in the beginning of this book, as she did in "baby." it really helped me get in touch with some issues & forced me to concentrate- which can sometimes be difficult when you have a frazzled day parenting a toddler. as i did in the baby whisperer book, i'll take the quiz again later and see how my child has changed and what i need help with then. ms. hogg is very nurturing and calming. i'm so sad to hear that she died. i was heartbroken, because i was really looking forward to her help in a few years when my toddler becomes a teenager!

I have to tell you after reading the Baby Whisperer there was no way that I wouldn't have bought this book. It has given both my husband and myself great insight into the mind of our 14 month old and I'm sure it will help even more as the toddler years progress.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Plan.......2006-07-15

I'm smack in the middle of reading this book, but I've done so much scanning of it, I've checked out what the book has to offer. I really feel like this book gives solid plans for many toddlers' routines. It's true that much of what she says is "common sense", but also a lot of it is stuff I wasn't thinking at the time I read it, so it gave me great ideas. I esp. liked her plans for bathing, eating, and diapering. I wish now that I had payed more attention when I read her baby edition.

4 out of 5 stars common sense...but couldn't we use a little more of that?.......2006-07-13

I like Tracy Hogg...and after reading her first book I was compelled to try this one as well. Although a lot of her wisdom is really common sense, it's always good to get a refresher. It's easy to get caught up in being tired and emotional as the mom of a toddler, so this book made me take a deep breath and re-evaluate my actions. I recommend it to all new moms!

Book Description

This applied introduction to the mathematics of probability and statistics emphasizes the existence of variation in almost every process, and how the study of probability and statistics helps us understand this variability. Designed for students with a background in calculus, it reinforces basic mathematical concepts with numerous real-world examples and applications to illustrate the relevance of key concepts.

1 out of 5 stars New To Probability/Stats? Get Another Book NOW!.......2007-10-05

Having been through calculus I, II & III with a "B" or better, I was totally unprepared for the intense shock probability theory would have in store for me. The basic concepts of probability are assumed to be within easy grasp of any college student, which for the most part is a fair assumption by the authors. It doesn't take much effort to visualize what happens when you flip coins or cast a die. But the authors make other assumptions and they're all prefaced by the words "clearly" and "it should be obvious to the student".

Well, Mr. Tanis and Mr. Hogg, it's not obvious because we're not all graduate level math students. The first chapter deals with the basic premise of probability, which is is the foundation for the entire course. Yet the problems provided beyond the first few softball questions can be so intensely difficult that it immediately turns the student against the course. These kinds of problems are acceptable if a study guide is provided, but that isn't an option. You're on your own to figure out where you've gone wrong, making learning with this book a frustrating and exceptionally time consuming task.

I will toss away $1,500 when I drop my course despite having an excellent professor (albiet, one who seems to think this material should be second nature to anyone who is able to somehow make it into her lecture). I'll retake the course when I've had an opportunity to properly learn the material from a book that's targeted at the rest of the student body.

From a personal point of view, this book makes you feel really really dense.

4 out of 5 stars A Stat Book for Math Majors.......2007-03-09

As a Mathematics major, I found this book to be helpful on two conditions: (a.) You have a competent professor teaching the material. (b.) You have had at least Calculus III.
Hogg and Tanis, as other reviewers have stated, make liberal use or reference to concepts covered in calculus courses: partial derivatives, double integrals, McLauren/Taylor Series etc. If these two conditions have not been met, this would be a terrible book to start with. If you are a Math Major or engineering student, by all means dive right in.

3 out of 5 stars Usable.......2006-12-19

This book provides an introduction to the theory of probability and statistics for advanced undergraduate math students. Topics covered include basic concepts of probability (enumeration techniques, Baye's Theorem), discrete probability distributions, continuous probability distributions, multivariate distributions, the Normal Distribution, confidence intervals, and significance testing. Each chapter is broken up into sections, and each section includes practice exercises. More advanced optional sections are marked with asterisks. Many exercises require skills in both single and multi-variable calculus. End material includes brief reviews of set theory, limits, infinite series, integration, and multivariate calculus, references, standard probability tables, answers to odd-numbered exercises, and an index.

Overall, I found the text less than transparent. In the beginning chapters, I found myself scratching my head after reading the discussion of the theory, and then struggling through the examples to see what was meant, taking notes in the text about which numbers in the examples referred to which parts of the theoretical discussion. As I got further along in the text, I found it more and more difficult to make sense of, especially since the authors tend to dive directly into the theory and proofs without giving an indication first of which direction they are heading and why, or even what problem the theory will eventually address. By the end of the book, although I was reading the text, I understood practically nothing, and had to rely on classroom lectures to even deduce what topic had been covered in the text. While I'm not the best math student, I have had 5 semesters of calculus, and I am getting an A in the stats course for which this text was assigned, so it may not just be me--the text is simply obtuse. But at least typos are at a minimum, and the summaries of formulas for distributions, confidence intervals, and significance tests that appear inside the front and back cover are conveniently placed and quite useful. If you're looking for a text for an advanced stats class for undergrads, this may do, but most students will need a lot of hand-holding in order to get them through it.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book if you can.......2006-05-18

This was my first book in probability, and i regret to say that it was a total waste of time. It is too colorfuly and with lots of trivial examples but no real "maths", its like spoon feeding the readers rather than creating probability as an interesting subject. Most of the problems are trivial in nature and most of the concepts are too convulated.
I would have given it no stars, my advise is to avoid this book if you can.

4 out of 5 stars As reference text, it 's OK!.......2006-02-20

In spite of the fact the contain of the released material is extremely theoretic with very few resolved and proposed exercises, the author gets its task: to present us an admirable presentation of the main feature of this fabulous discipline. Recommended specially for University teachers and Engineers deeply concerned with the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Obtuse and error-riddled.......2007-09-05

There are many great math texts that are difficult going at first, but which pay great dividends the more you "drill down" into them. While this may have been the case with previous editions of this text, the crazy-making number of errata in this edition make it very difficult going ALWAYS.

Furthermore, the ease and small number of exercises aren't enough to get the concepts firmly stuck in your cranium. I'm using three other supplements to get me through my graduate probability/stats sequence. Pbbtt!!

1 out of 5 stars Needs to be re-edited.......2006-12-29

This is one of the worst textbooks that I have ever used in my life. Everyone in my class of over twenty people hated this book. Even my teacher did not think it was very good but unfortunately it is a standard text for graduate level statistics. This book needs more examples and to be edited better as there are a good bit of errors. Also, the structure of the book needs to be changed to be more user friendly. The reader should not have to struggle so much to find the information that he is looking for.

The subject matter in the book is powerful and useful. However, a good textbook displays the information in an accessible way and this book does not do that.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good teaching tool. Not to mention, full of typos and inconsistencies........2006-12-26

Much too wordy and difficult to read. Not nearly enough examples structured like the exercises at the end of each chapter. Need to more adequately prove concepts/show origins of concepts (i.e. more than just "this is what it is, uh, because it is" or "because that's how it works out best"). Many typos, so you don't know what to "trust" (even one of the tables in the appendix has incorrect values for one of the columns in some printings). Not a good textbook for "self-teaching," hope you have a good professor to learn from.

1 out of 5 stars Not introductory at all.......2006-11-16

The book is not introductory to students outside statistics dept or engineering depts. There are logic jumps everywhere and the author doesn't even bother to briefly explain every concept at the beginning of each section, not mention to tell us how to apply this concept in a real situation. This is a required book in a class I am taking. The only reason I bought it is because I got it very cheap. However, I notice that most students in my class don't bother read the book, even student from statistics dept. We basically highly depend on lecture notes, homework solutions, and old exam questions. This is the worst book I read ever. I hope there are some other books out there which do a better job to connect math statistics to real situation.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it is one of the best books in statistics, although it is not "introductory".......2006-10-29

This is one of the most famous books on mathematical statistics. Is it good though? Many reviewers think not. My own personal opinion is that it is fantastic and extremely carefully written. The sixth edition has been completely modernized and includes such "modern" topics as MCMC, robust methods and the EM algorithm.

If you approach this book with a view of getting a *first course in basic statistics*, you will be disappointed and find the book very difficult. Hence many reviewers' dislike of it. Perhaps the authors are to blame for this, by using the phrase "Introduction to..." in the title, when clearly the book is much more than a mere introduction. To their credit, the authors do warm in the Preface that the book is aimed at beginning graduate students.

So here is the deal: if you are looking for a truly introductory book, try Clarke and Cooke's "Basic Statistics" or Mendenhall et al.'s "Mathematical Statistics with Applications." However, if you have some background in basic probability, statistics and calculus, then Hogg et al.'s book will be invaluable to you, because it is extremely well-written (by the very best in the field) and comprehensive. Together with Casella and Berger's Statistical Inference, it is one of the best existing books in intermediate to advanced statistics.

5 out of 5 stars great help.......2007-06-13

we took it with us, and it did provide a lot of good info

1 out of 5 stars Maps & Prices need serious attention.......2007-04-23

Although this book was published in 2006, many of the prices are out of date and at least 2 euro off. Also, the maps are not accurate. My husband and I spent lots of time searching for items listed and could never find them. After the first day, we carried another map with us and consulted it instead of the maps in the book. Also, be careful with the maps printed in the book, as most of them are not pointing north. We got turned around in many of the walking tours by accidentally turning the wrong way because of the map's orientation. Also, we tried to eat at a couple of the restaurants listed in the book. One was no where to be found, not even the street listed, and two more that we had hoped to eat at were supposed to be open and were not. We will NEVER buy another Frommer's guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Effortless Instant Vacation Planner.......2006-11-11

Unless you want to hire a tour guide or you have a friend who lives in Rome to take you around this is your best bet. Short and to the point reviews and info on all the things you want to see in Rome. Some of the prices in the book are already out of date. The Leonardo Express train to and from the airport now costs 11 Euros, not 9.50. The map that is included is good enough but lacks some detail. It would be nice if the map included little icons of the more popular sites for ease of reading. That said your hotel will probably have a tourist map for you for free. Using this book I put together an intinerary that was good for me in about an hour.

3 out of 5 stars reference book.......2007-01-04

I have a very consistent library on weapons.
This book is a useful quick reference source.

4 out of 5 stars THE IDEAL READ FOR MEETING PEOPLE.......2006-08-08

FIRST THOUGHTS:

I decided to read this volume to distract myself while chaperoning my spouse and youngster during a sultry day at Six Flags theme park. After about 30 minutes I realized that the book had to be put away as I found people passing by me either gave me a thumbs-up or a head shaking frown. Can I be sure it was the book? ANSWER AFTER THE REVIEW!

ABOUT THE BOOK: LOOKS LIKE A J.C. PENNEY CATALOG FOR GUNS WITH EDITING ERRORS

ORGANIZATION OF "JANE'S GUNS RECOGNITION GUIDE:

GUN TYPES - PISTOLS, REVOLVERS, SUBMACHINE GUNS,BOLT ACTION RIFLES, AUTOMATIC RIFLES, SHOTGUNS, MACHINE GUNS;

-* MFG. INDEX, BRAND NAME INDEX - Pages 419-464

Within each gun-type, aphabetical organization by country is used. Essentially, 1 gun gets 1 page with a color photo and also includes a short blurb about the piece and a blue-outlined section at the bottom titled, "SPECIFICATIONS & OPERATIONS".

WHAT IT IS: A BASIC COMPREHENSIVE IDENTIFICATION GUIDE

There are a lot of guns in this neatly organized reference, but it provides minimal info per gun. Essentially, one can quickly and reliably identify most any piece that may be encountered in the world today or during most of the twentieth century. Having said that, if you are looking for ballistic information you will have to look elsewhere.

SO WAS IT THE BOOK OR MY DEODORANT?

Having moved away from the foot traffic to sit in the shade, after becoming a little self-conscious of the unwanted attention I seemed to be getting, a woman, about 30 or so, who had been waiting in line to get a tattoo-like rub-on, was staring at me and moving toward me. "You must be a gun dealer?" She stated rather proudly. I replied, "No -- actually I am an anti-gun activist." She looked me over, now, as if expecting to see what was wrong with me that she had missed the first time and walked away without speaking again.

5 out of 5 stars Well Rounded Guide .......2006-03-30

Very imformative and up to date, with relevant facts and a summary for each weapon. On the negative side though, there are WAY to many grammatical errors, it was as if the author could'nt speak English. But since grammar is not important in this type of book it is negligible. In terms of selection of firearms virtually every mass-produced firearm after 1940 is included; the only I can recall thats not in the book is the Walther P99.

3 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, never before heard of weapons, OK research.......2003-07-29

This addition of Jane's Guns Recognition guide deserves both praise and criticism. It covers a magnificent spectum of weapons from all over the world, but stops short of including new weapons, has inaccurate details (the caliber of several weapons is completely wrong).

If you have a working knowledge of firearms already, don't waste your time. If you are just getting started, it might be worth you while.

1 out of 5 stars Not A Janes I Hope... Nooooo!.......2002-07-03

I got the first edition and was very disapointed. Didnt even come close to what would expected from a Janes Book.
