4 out of 5 stars interesting information.......2007-08-25

This book was a pretty interesting read. However, I didn't try the techniques because everything it does pretty much is a bipass to what faith can do. Some people have it and some don't. But I had no problems with the delivery of the product or anything.

5 out of 5 stars It works most of the time........2007-08-06

This is a great book. I have found that the tapping technique is very effective with at least 90% of the people I have worked with. It will not work, however, on very negative people who are convinced they cannot be helped, those who are died in the wool skeptics who are determined to prove you wrong, people who are clinging to their illness because they are afraid of losing their disability pension or because their illness brings them sympathy and attention from their family and friends. Usually you can identify these people ahead of time and avoid working with them. There are cases where the reason for their illness is a spiritual possession. This will involve finding someone who knows how to work with that problem.

5 out of 5 stars Tapping the Healer Within is AMAZING!.......2007-07-17

This was the most amazing and helpful book I have ever read! I was so excited after the first time I used the proceedures correctly and it worked, that I had to do an anxiety treatment on myself so I could sleep. I couldn't stop my mind from thinking of the incredible possibilities of healing this therapy presented. I bought five more books for friends and family and will soon place another order. Do yourself a favor and order 10 the first time! I have successfully used the treatment to heal my seven year old of a terrible migraine. I also healed my daughter (12) of a severe needle phobia. I used it to heal another 12 year old of being in basements (where she sleeps). I treated another for deep emotional issues that were preventing him from focusing at work. I look forward to using this therapy more and learning more about it. I am presently reading the Amazon.com suggested book called "Evolving Thought Field Therapy" (Diepold...). It is equally amazing and takes this therapy one step further. It also doesn't require tapping, just touching. It is very detailed and included diagnostic instruction with charts. I highly recommend both books. If this one doesn't work for you, read the Evolving book to understand what more you can do to get this therapy to work for you. It REALLY WORKS! I think I have found my future vocation. I hope to train in this field now. Andrea

5 out of 5 stars Kay's Positive Review of Tapping the Healer Within.......2007-02-15

A friend had me read a page of this book. It so interested me that I checked it out of the library, read it, was highly intrigued by it and purchased four copies--one for myself, two for my adult children and one for the friend who first introduced the book to me.

"Tapping the Healer Within" is about removing "perterbations" by usuing thought field therapy (tft) and thus attaining serenity whereas before there was fear, anxieties, phobias, etc.

Currently I am using the techniques described in the book and have met with unusual success in the elimination of stress in connection with the recent death of my mother.

The author, Roger J. Callahan, Ph.D (for many years--20+) has written the book well, with plenty of success stories. He has ended the book with address contacts, etc. There are additional aids available for purchase and they are listed at the end of the book.

After talking with Dr. Callahan personally on the phone and working further with him, I have purchased three additional copies of the book and have given them to friends in hopes of helping them with the stresses of their lives. I highly recommend "Tapping the Healer Within".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book on the basics only.......2006-11-10

This book is excellent for the person who wants to understand the basics and is also a very good resource book. Once on the path of tapping, one goes on to other more elaborate formulaic books. Loved it for what it is.

Book Description

A Renaissance Fair is coming to the relatively quiet college town of Farberville, Arkansas. Though resistant to getting involved, Claire Malloy, local bookseller and mother of the perpetually petulant teenager Caron (she who speaks in ALL CAPS), finds herself drawn into the strange inner workings of the group putting on the fair. But suddenly, a dark mood falls over the festivities when one of the organizers is a victim of arson, and her body is found in the burned wreckage of her rented house. The circumstances of the crime take an unusual turn when it seems that no one can identify the body, since mysteriously no one has seen the woman in the flesh. Someone is definitely deadbut is it murder? And how does it all relate to the very singular members of the local chapter of The Association for Renaissance Scholarship and Enlightenment (ARSE)?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too clever by half.......2007-09-13

I enjoyed Joan Hess's Maggody series, but I find Claire Malloy (the main character in this book) to be sarcastic, sardonic, supercilious, and, well, just plain snotty. She is not a character I enjoy spending my spare time with.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing read .......2007-06-11

I really had to work to stay with this to the end, and wasn't worth my time. The renaissance stuff was tedious, a really disappointing read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining amusing mystery series set in college town .......2007-05-14

This lastest clever mystery by Joan Hess moves you from your armchair to a college town coping with a medieval fair with a cast of characters funny but believable.

2 out of 5 stars don't like renaissance fairs.......2007-05-09

I disliked this book. I don't like Renaissance fairs as it is, and I far prefer Hess's Maggody books to the Claire Molloy stories. This book had conversations that went on way too long with the "thee" and "thou" Renaissance speech that I find tedious. She also tossed in some quotes that seemed unnecessary and self-serving. Sure showed me that I know nothing of literature. I think I've bought all of Hess's books. From the beginning I observed that Hess's phrasing is so trite, it's almost high school quality. (No offense to articulate high schoolers.)

I do enjoy the interaction between mother and daughter, which is probably why I still buy her Molloy stories.

4 out of 5 stars A laugh a minute in a Renaissance murder setting.......2007-05-01

The Renaissance Fair in my state is among the oldest continuously operating Renaissance Fairs in the United States, and will celebrate its 37th anniversary this year. I have attended the fair numerous times, and know people who participated.

I have often wondered what transpires behind the scenes at the fair--and Damsels in Distress answers this question. Murder most foul. An excellent who-done-it with motives scattered among the Renaissance Fair participants. The story hosts a royal court rift with jealousy, infidelities, and greed. Farberville, Arkansas is a small, quaint college town about to host its first Renaissance Fair. Through it all, our heroine, Clarissa Malloy, must walk a tightrope between bookseller, mother of a teenager, amateur sleuth, and fiancee of Police Lieutenant Peter Rosen.

Clarissa is drawn into the inner circle of the royal court much against her will. She's privy to a secret that could shatter her daughter and her upcoming marriage. Then, when one of the participants dies in a suspicious house fire, Clarissa finds herself sniffing out the clues. She is also torn between being glad Peter is away, because what he doesn't know about her involvement in the crime won't hurt her or him--and being upset that Peter's mother is trying to set him up again with his first wife who is rich, powerful, and beautiful.

This is the 16th Claire Malloy Mystery, but there is no need to know Claire's previous history in order to enjoy Damsels in Distress, but it might very well encourage you to give the other books in the series a read.

Armchair Interviews says: Humor abounds at the Renaissance Fair.

The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom is a collection of passages from Henri Nouwen's journals, written during a period when his self-esteem evaporated, his energy to work disappeared, and God seemed entirely unreal. This is not a book to be read straight through: each short chapter takes time to digest, because, like the following passage, each of Nouwen's thoughts has the raw complexity of real honesty:
Your body needs to be held and to hold, to be touched and to touch. None of these needs is to be despised, denied, or repressed. But you have to keep searching for your body's deeper need, the need for genuine love. Every time you are able to go beyond the body's superficial desires for love, you are bringing your body home and moving toward integration and unity.
--Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

This is Henri Nouwen's "secret journal." It was  written during the most difficult period of his life, when he suddenly lost his self-esteem,  his energy to live and work, his sense of being loved, even his hope in God. Although he experienced excruciating anguish and despair, he was still able to keep a journal in which he wrote a spiritual imperative to himself each day that emerged from his conversations with friends and supporters.

For more than eight years, Henri Nouwen felt that what he wrote was too raw and private to share with others. Instead, he published The Return of the Prodigal Son, in which he expressed some of the insights gained during his mental and spiritual crisis. But then friends asked him, "Why keep your anguish hidden from the many people who have been nurtured by your writing? Wouldn't it be of consolation for many to know about the fierce inner battle that lies underneath so many of your spiritual insights?"

For the countless men and women who have to live through the pain of broken relationships, or who suffer from the loss of a loved one, this book about the inner voice of love offers new courage, new hope, even new life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nouwen's Seeking Heart.......2007-07-25

Of Nouwen's books, this one has a deeper vulnerability than the others. I have always appreciated his organic spiritual depth and relational intimacy with God, but this book is different. It's raw, personal and vulnerable - and therefore very helpful. Not many men (males) would come out and say the things he says, and that's part of what makes it refreshing. His search for love and affirmation is more honest than I've read from any other writer and his gift to readers is his willingness to put these expressions in print. The book speaks most powerfully to the inner struggles of doubt and emotional need. If you've never been in that place I doubt the book will mean much, but if you have, you might find it to be water for your desert place.

5 out of 5 stars A true gem!!!.......2007-06-01

Henri Nouwen gives an insightful, raw, emotional response to his "dark night of the soul". This book is a perfect for anyone who is at a cross-roads in thier own journey.

5 out of 5 stars Healing.......2007-03-21

This book came to me at a perfect stage in my healing. One reads whatever one feels drawn to instead of just reading the book through page by page. It really added a depth of understanding to my journey and what I was truly going through. How refreshing! I was able to stay in some difficult places with God because of Henri's insight into spiritual things. I've bought the book for several friends who also love it!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-01-16

This short book tells the story of my life. It has been a great comfort to me. Drawn from Nouwen's own experiences of breakdown and collapse, the book is his private journal - written in brief entries of "spiritual imperatives" it reads like a daily devotional.

Filled with profound insight and a deep sense of love and compassion. Highly recommended for anyone who is struggling or wants to feel the presence of God's love in a more intimate way.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughts on the Inner Voice of Love.......2006-03-24

One of Nowen's best books, coming from a highly personal experience. His sharing of intimate thoughts during a stage of intense suffering and loss and the process by which his relationship with God slowly lifted him from his dispair is a great source of comfort. The structure of the book, divided in individual "spiritual imperatives" makes it very powerful. One of the most moving and soul-nourishing book I have read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent research & source book.......2006-12-31

High quality data and right up to date (Autumn 2006). The book is helpfully divided into two parts ~ the first half explains many of the useful topics needed to understand restructured debt and corporate distress and the second half gives detailed advice on building or understanding typical models on default probablities and the risk return assessment of distressed debt together with practical examples of valuing distressed companies and their debt. It also includes summaries of the legal implications, but there are much better books on that subject. I thought this was good value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars More relevant than you think........2006-11-16

Most people in the investing world don't read this book. But they should. It's a textbook so not something to breeze through at the beach. However, the techniques described in the book are very applicable to any company, not just those in disress or bankruptcy. In fact I did some work on EMC many years ago when they *appeared* to be growing rapidly but in reality they were getting into trouble. This was way back in the early 1990's when the stock collapsed from $78. Having shared my analysis with Wall Street types at the time I soon found myself there!

The main point is you can use this type of analysis effectively and because most people in general equity investing don't, it just might give you a bit more edge.

A Clear and Effective Approach to Learning DBT Skills

First developed for treating borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has proven effective as treatment for a range of other mental health problems, especially for those characterized by overwhelming emotions. Research shows that DBT can improve your ability to handle distress without losing control and acting destructively. In order to make use of these techniques, you need to build skills in four key areas--distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

This book, a collaborative effort from three esteemed authors, offers straightforward, step-by-step exercises for learning these concepts and putting them to work for real and lasting change. Start by working on the introductory exercises and, after making progress, move on to the advanced-skills chapters. Whether you are a professional or a general reader, whether you use this book to support work done in therapy or as the basis for self-help, you'll benefit from this clear and practical guide to better managing your emotions.

The individual struggling with overwhelming emotions and DBT therapists will benefit significantly from this workbook. McKay, Wood and Brantley have expanded and translated DBT Skills, making Linehan's iconic work on emotional skill building even more accessible and easy to apply to everyday life.
--Kate Northcott, MA, MFT, is a DBT therapist in private practice with Mindfulness Therapy Associates and is director of New Perspectives Center for Counseling, a non-profit counseling center, in San Francisco, CA

I am reviewing it with my psychologist and he is helping me to understand her phenominal new ways of living and being at peace with the daily distressors in life. Great workbook to have to heal yourself of mental and regular day to day stressors.

5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL book!.......2005-03-10

I read this book more than 15 years ago and I still use the strategies today. In fact, now that my own teen is dealing with depression issues, I've taught him to use the strategies as well. I read the book after about 2 years of psychotherapy. While the therapy was VERY helpful, this book gave me very concrete skills and within a month, I no longer felt the need to continue therapy. If you faithfully complete the exercises, you can learn great techniques that make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars most helpful book i ever read..........2000-03-19

i have a copy of this book i have referred to many times since the 80's. i do not know the authors, nor do i have any vested interest in a submitting a complimentary review. i have never submitted such a review before. i attest that this book is the single most helpful self-help book that i have ever had the good fortune to read. in one's darkest hour, it can help you INSTANTLY...i am happy it is still available, and i am buying a copy for a friend in need (not wanting to part with my own!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of coping stratgies.......1998-03-06

Among the hundreds of serious and not-so pop psych books I've read, "Rapid Relief" actually works. Particularly useful is the "emotional scale" which can help you understand what you or others are going through as you go through your ups and downs.

However "Rapid" is NOT a substitute for deep work with an qualified, experienced and insightful therapist. Instead it's an execellent source of day to day coping stratgies. For eight bucks, that's quite a deal.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to your library.......2007-09-06

Mrs. Peace is one author whose books I will get on her name alone; I know they are always sure to be full not just of biblical truth, but of the Bible itself. In fact, it is a rare page that does not at least allude clearly to a passage of Scripture, if it doesn't quote one outright. This particular offering is a treatment of "biblical solutions for problems women face," including gossip, hurt feelings, vanity, legalism, feminism, and trials. She handles each topic beautifully, with all the compassion and boldness she has become known for.

My favorite statement from the book is from the chapter on the feminist influence (called, appropriately, "But What If I *Like* To Have My Ears Tickled?").

"The only way we will not be taken captive by the feminist beliefs is through the power of the Holy Spirit and God's grace enabling us to study and believe and embrace what God has told us in His Word. What God has told us in His Word is that women are not victims. We are creatures created in God's image for the purpose of proclaiming His excellencies (1 Peter 2:9). God, not man, determined how best and in what role women were to give Him glory. It is a joy and privilege to serve God, but we can do it rightly only on His terms." (p. 143)

Mrs. Peace has embraced her God-given role as Biblical counselor and teacher of women, and shows each one of us that God has answers for the problems we all face. She reminds us that we will only experience the freedom God wishes to be ours when we face those problems on God's terms, repent, and follow through with obedience.

2 out of 5 stars Strengths and weaknesses.......2007-06-28

Once again, Peace writes a book of advice for Christian women in how to solve their problems. Some of her points are very helpful and good, while others smack of the old-fashioned desire to place the female role underneath the male role. Women who express beliefs like this never cease to disappoint me, whatever else they may say of our sex.

My favorite point of this book was a very important truth that Peace expressed while addressing the harm she believed the feminist movement to do. She explained that feminists didn't want women to be defined by their husbands or their households and sought to define themselves by jobs and worldly tasks instead. Peace set both housewives AND feminists straight when she said that a child of God is not defined by anything earthly, but by their relationship with Christ! These powerful words should be a gem to all Christians, especially those who even for a moment forget their worth and try to define themselves by things that dim in comparison to our Lord.

As a feminist, I don't usually like hearing the movement bashed, especially by complimentarians who act like it's an evil tool. However, Peace did not come across as bashing and I agreed with her points about how precious the home is. There is nothing more precious than sharing life with a spouse and raising children, God's own image. This is something many a modern woman forgets.

Inspite of the gems of truth in this book, my enthusiasm ebbed a good deal when Peace reverted to the typical trademarks of complimentarianism. It's been a long observation of mine that those who believe in heavy submission to the husband usually believe in submission to males in general, to the point where the importance of female leaders and true appreciation of a woman's strength is pushed to the back-burner. Sadly, Peace is one of those women. In her chapter of women's roles in the church, she speaks more of what she believes a woman's role in general to be than a woman's role in the church alone. The female role according to Peace? Follower; secondary. All the typical lines were there: man is the leader, woman is the follower and helper (Peace's exact words), equality in value but not in roles, etc etc.

Frankly, I'm used to being told that women are followers in home and in church, but when people like Peace try to take their old-fashioned views of home and church and force them on women as a whole, I lose patience very quickly. It never ceases to amaze me how long-time Christians and Biblical scholars like Peace manage to painfully overlook the VARIOUS Biblical women who led, taught, and instructed people of all sorts, including men! Of course, Peace attempted to use Biblical passages to back herself up; she even hedged around God's clear design of equality in Genesis by claiming that, when God said man and woman would rule over everything on earth, He only meant this in a general way and was not referring to individual gender roles. Martha honey, if God says women lead in general, He means women lead in general! Judges, queens, battles, these are all things that both Biblical women and modern women have done with God-given success! I'm not sure why exactly Peace put quotation marks around the words "God made the man to lead and the woman to help and follow" because these were definetly her words, not God's. At this point, the book seemed to dissolve into yet another tool to humble women more than necessary. Peace had ended the previous chapter with the words, "In the following chapter, we shall see that the demand for equality does not stop when we step inside the church doors." Well of course it doesn't, Peace. Males and females are to be equal everywhere! This "demand" is not a sinful thing. Men are not the central sex in this world, Peace; God made both sexes to lead, instruct, initiate in His name.

I also found her explanation of "unintentional hurts" to be partly incorrect and rather rude. She claims that if a person is unintentionally hurt by another person, the sinfulness is on the part of the person who was hurt! She describes this person as usually "overly sensitive or prideful" and claims that this is the reason they were hurt! Or, maybe it was just a misunderstanding, Peace. Did that ever occur to you? Why blame the hurt party, automaticaly assuming they willfully misunderstood? I've been on both sides of the fence and I know it's not just a matter of pride. This sort of "according to Martha Peace" thinking is what annoys me so much about Peace and her ilk. She's not a psychiatrist and her book is not God's Word, but her interpretation of it. Perhaps authors like Peace, in their endeavors to make women humble, should humbly try to keep this in mind.

If you're a fan of Martha Peace, you'll probably already know what to expect and it could make a good tool for you. As a matter of fact, since it was mainly the one chapter that offended me, this book may be a help to women of more than one mindset. There are definetly some pearls of wisdom in the book, just don't let it alone define you as a woman.

Not only did I find this book encouraging and challenging on a personal level, but it is also an essential tool for helping other women find Biblical solutions to everyday problems.

5 out of 5 stars Victory over our problems!.......2006-11-17

Last week I finished reading Martha Peace's new book Damsels in Distress: Biblical Solutions for Problems Women Face. Most people are familiar with Martha Peace's The Excellent Wife and this book is just as poignant and biblically sound. Peace writes with spiritual depth and encouraging clarity as she addresses problems that women have with others, self and the world. In eleven chapters Martha covers gossip and slander, idolatrous emotional attachments, manipulation, hurt feelings, vanity, PMS, legalism, the feminist influence, the role of women in the church and trials. Seeing that list, I knew this book would be convicting! And it is, but she does not condemn and leave us feeling guilty. Martha's heart for helping women comes across very genuinely in her writing and her purpose it truly to exhort her readers to help them change.

In the first chapter Martha writes-

"There is nothing, however painful, that we must go through in vain. God will not only help us, but He will also use all things for our good and for His glory. What a comforting thought when we are in a trial or undergoing terrific pressure or temptation!"

She urges the reader to keep this perspective in all our struggles. This encouragement is especially timely as she continues to write very black and white about our struggles and how no excuses will do. If we have a 1 Peter approach to our weaknesses The Lord can accomplish His change in us.

There were a couple of sections that I thought about quite a bit. The first was from chapter 4-Manipulation: I'm supposed to respond how? Martha writes-

"Sinful manipulation is using unbiblical words and/or your countenance to bully another person into letting you have your way. All the while you know that if you cannot have your way, you can at least punish the other person in the process.

You know you are guilty of sinful manipulation when you don't graciously take "no" for an answer and keep trying to convince the other person to let you have your way. Certainly there may be times when an appeal is appropriate, but if the answer is sill "no," then you must see it as God's will for you at the moment."

She breaks manipulation down into a chart of tactics that women try with their husbands, parents, friends and children. She sees that most verbal manipulation falls into one of these categories: sweet talk, begging, crying, anger, the cold shoulder, accusations, and threats. She calls us to put off manipulations and let all we say and do be done in love.

The second one is from chapter 5, Hurt Feelings: What difference does it make what he intended? Martha tries to be clear on the differences between intentional and unintentional hurts. I am amazed at the authoritative clarity with which she describes these two problems.

She writes about intentional hurts-

"Intentional hurts are sinful. They may be in the form of slander, name-calling, malicious comments and acts, or cruel threats. Whatever the form, you can overcome them only be responding righteously, not by adding additional wickedness."

I was a little surprised at the bluntness of what she says about unintentional hurts-

"Unintentional hurts are sinful on the part of the person perceiving something as hurtful. Often the person perceiving something as hurtful is overly sensitive, shy, proud, and self-absorbed. Whatever form their sin tends to take, they are to have a righteous, humble response to others.

Instead of being offended and hurt, we must learn to give others the benefit of the doubt...We must be willing to feel uncomfortable in order to help others feel comfortable. It is never pleasant to feel uncomfortable, but it is a mark of maturity when your concern is greater for another person's feelings than your own."

This is just a sample of this book, and I hope that you will take time to read the rest for yourself. Martha Peace cuts through the self-esteem, entitlement, feministic message that many authors use in an attempt to help women in their problems and she speaks authoritatively from God's Word helping women see how He cares for us deeply and tenderly-even when we think others don't understand our struggles-and also that He is holy and requires our obedience in all areas of life. Only in Him can we be free from sin and victorious over these problems.

if you are a woman with no problems, or if you know no women with problems. Otherwise, it is a MUST READ-excellent, Bible-based and WELL WORTH the read! I ordered it from the library but need to buy it so I can have it as a reference and to share :)

    Book Description

This casebook offers fifteen lively cases that illustrate a wide range of specific DSM-IV diagnoses covered in the abnormal psychology course. These cases integrate issues of racial and gender diversity and provide insight into the lives of people suffering from a variety of psychological disorders, highlighting how psychological distress is experienced and treated in real life. Each case follows a similar pattern to aid reader comprehension. An Introduction describes the problems in the person's life, or the catalyst bringing him or her into therapy. A Psychosocial History offers childhood and other relevant background data to provide a context for the disorder. The Conceptualization section offers the rationale for the diagnosis and the Treatment section then outlines the appropriate psychotherapy as well as any other treatments such as medication or group therapy. The Discussion section highlights interesting aspects of the case, presents relevant research, and examines various theoretical perspectives on treatment. Finally, the Prognosis section covers reasonable expectations of what the future might hold for this person. Critical Thinking Questions are posed at the end of each chapter. Gender and cultural diversity are highlighted among both clients and psychotherapists with important cultural issues woven throughout the cases. The cases themselves feature people from a variety of backgrounds and heritages, the impact of sociocultural factors on the experience or prevalence of a disorder is often discussed, as well as how treatment is affected when the client and therapist come from different ethnic backgrounds. This casebook also features diverse theoretical orientations that drive treatment. Treatment outcomes are diverse and realistic and span from short to long-term. Most are designed as ideal interventions, but some are influenced by economic concerns and changing models of available services.

A step-by-step demonstration of how to screen children's drawings for indicators of trauma. Children who have been traumatized but cannot talk about their experiences--either because they have pledged their silence or because they do not know the words--subconsciously call for help through their art. The authors have developed a simple, one-page art screening form for use with the "human figure drawing" (HFD) and the "kinetic family drawing" (KFD), which has brought a standardization to the interview of these children and the interpretation of their art. This is invaluable to front-line clinicians, private practitioners, trauma centers, child protective services, and the legal system. * Step-by-step instructions and self-tests help readers easily learn this important technique. * Contains scoring forms and illuminating case examples * Includes color art

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear techniques backed by research.......2005-07-23

I strongly disagree with the art therapists who did not like the book. Maybe it's because I am a mental health therapist who uses many methods, including visual arts, to work with kids, but am not exclusivly an art therapist. If you are looking for a clearly written, data-based method for screening children's drawings in a clinical or school counseling setting, this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for an art therapy text, this isn't the top choice. Make your decision based on your clinical needs. This book has the strong advantage of empirical evidence of accuaracy, which is a very big deal in civil and criminal courts.

2 out of 5 stars Not a realistic tool for screening child artwork.......2000-01-15

As a graduate art therapy student who has been working with children for years, I found this book to have very few realistic examples of children's artwork. Many of the images were clearly created by an adult and therefore provided very little help as to what to look for in childrens art. In addition to the poor images, I didn't find much of the information to have therapeutic value.

    2 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......1999-12-21

As a Board Registered Art Therapist and instructor, I made the error of recommending this book to students before I actually laid eyes on it. What a mistake! When one of my students, also a trained art therapist, received it, we literally laughed. This is such a poor example of literature on how to understand children's art. Even more disturbing were the strange pseudo-drawings of children's art made by the authors. Clearly not recommended when there are so many better books available.

2 out of 5 stars These are not new techniques.......1999-07-03

Hey, it is erroneous to say that these are "new techniques," when in fact they are 50 to 60 years old. What the authors did was do a new study with these techniques and then try to offer a convincing book on analyzing children's drawings. The problem is, it is not very convincing. One cannot use the indicators the authors note to establish child abuse in a slick fashion. We already know that the techniques the authors based this study on are not reliable, so they really just built on what was already unreliable to begin with. I understand their need to help children in distress, but that was not really accomplished here.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful screening tool!.......1999-05-06

I understand the comments from those other reviewers sharing their concern that this does not honor the complexity of children's drawings. However, as a mental health professional who often testifies in court on behalf of child sexual abuse victims, this is a screening instrument, with experiential data, which can be used to PROTECT those same children. I also am a professor (I teach graduate school) and use this book as a text ... assisting future school counselors and licensed professional counselors and marriage and family counselors to have a screening tool which may validate clinical hunches.
