With the publication in 1996 of The Harvard Guide to Women's Health, women seeking answers to questions about their health had access to the combined expertise of physicians from three of the world's most prestigious medical institutions: Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. With complete information on women's health concerns, physical and behavioral, this A to Z reference quickly became a definitive resource, praised especially for its coverage of topics not previously considered under the umbrella of women's health. The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health reunites the authors to bring a valued health reference up to date for a new generation--and for those women who have come to rely on the Harvard Guide and are now wondering what to do about their health as they enter a new stage of life, asking questions like the following:
In addition to revised recommendations reflecting the current medical thinking on menopause and hormone replacement therapy, the New Harvard Guide includes
- updated recommendations about cardiac health and heart disease--the #1 killer of women in the United States
- entries reflecting recent advances in the understanding and treatment of autoimmune diseases
- better coverage of health concerns throughout a woman's life span, from her first period to menopause and beyond, with a new entry on perimenopause
- expanded nutritional recommendations, including a unique chart of the U.S. government's Daily Reference Intakes for micronutrients, broken down for teens and women whose needs may differ because they are pregnant, breastfeeding, or postmenopausal
- updated information on over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, procedures, screenings, and diagnostic tests
Customer Reviews:
This reference is oversimplistic. Check it out in a store before buying it online.......2007-06-21
This book is written much differently than the Harvard Med Guide to Men's Health (which is an excellent book and a good read.) I am a health professional and I was disappointed to find that this book is indexed for use as an alphabetical reference and it is written in (too) simplistic language. Moreover, the explanation of where the research and conclusions come from (large research studies like the Nurse's Health Study, etc.) is absent. As a desk reference, this is a weak resource and as a comprehensive summary of Harvard Med conclusions, it also lacks cohesive, integrated organization.
Great resource .......2007-05-29
I have the original version and I refer to it all of the time. Very informative. Note the number of pages - this is a great resource. now I'm buying the updated version.
useful book.......2006-01-29
I purchased their first edition several years ago and was pleased to see they were updating.
Finding illnesses or symptoms are easily attined and graphics are superb.Would recommend to all my lady friends.
A doctor on your bookshelf!.......2004-12-18
I spent the last few months wrestling with a "women's health issue" of my own and this book was invaluable! I was able to research the possible things that might be causing my problem so that I had intelligent questions to discuss with my physician. I was then able to refer back to the book with the information he gave me. The diagrams are useful, the language concise, and each entry refers you to related entries in the book. Need a reference when you're healthy and want more info? This book is great. Need a reference when something is going wrong? This book is EVEN BETTER--find out what tests/procedures your doctor might use, the rationale for particular choices, what to expect during the test/exam, and gain insights for what the results mean. The New Harvard Guide can make a very scary situation much more manageable(knowledge is power!).
A lasting medical reference easy for lay readers to access.......2004-12-10
With the 1996 publication of this title, women seeking answers to common health questions enjoyed the combined expertise of physicians from three world-class institutions: The New Harvard Guide To Women's Health revises this classic, including new recommendations reflecting the latest medical thinking on menopause and hormone replacement therapy and adding updated recommendations on cardiac health, nutritional requirements, and the latest medications and diagnostic procedures. A lasting medical reference easy for lay readers to access, yet with all the power of the established medical community behind it.

Fun & Easy Crafts.......2005-06-17
I found out about this book when an online newsletter (Family Corner News) featured one of its projects. The project was decorating a flowerpot with seashells, filling it with sand and a fat candle. Really looked nice and just what I needed for my seaside themed bathroom.
That made me look at the book. It's great to find ways to use all those terra cotta flower pots sitting around in the garage.

Restaurant Terra provides fine dining in a century-old former foundry. The very personal creation of husband-and-wife chefs Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani, the Napa Valley dining spot is noted for its relaxed yet sophisticated cuisine--French- and Italian-influenced cooking that also reflects Sone's Japanese culinary heritage. Terra tells the restaurant's story and offers over 175 of its recipes, from appetizers such as Goat Cheese and Artichoke Spring Rolls with Arugula and Tomato Salad to desserts such as Chocolate Mousseline on Pecan Sablé with Coffee Granité. The authors are unapologetic about the work required to prepare many of the recipes, but they've also made them models of clarity and, better still, instruction. Readers who like to cook and those who enjoy armchair restaurant touring will welcome the book.
Beginning with a day-in-the-life restaurant diary--work starts at 4:30 a.m. and ends some 20 hours later--the book then offers recipes organized by course or food type. Standouts include Mussel Seafood Soup with Caramelized Onions, Bone Marrow Risotto with Braised Veal Shanks, and Chinese Egg Noodles with Gulf Shrimp, Shiitake Mushrooms, and Pea Tendrils. Desserts, which should bring any meal to a delirious close, include Fig Fritters with Ginger Ice Cream and Feuilleté of Caramelized Bananas with Chocolate Fudge Sauce. Present also is a particularly useful chapter on basic techniques--photos depicting various vegetable cuts are a valuable bonus--as well as basic and pantry recipes. Illustrated with color photos throughout, the book provides a sense of a restaurant performing at the top of its game, plus a blueprint for preparing its most delicious fare. --Arthur Boehm

Outstanding.......2006-03-04
A book of artistry and inspiration, Terra is sure to please the intermediate to advance chef and their diners. A cookbook and a reference, simply wonderful.
Great resource for special occasions.......2002-12-14
Great cookbook for those special occasions where you want to spend the time and resources on making something special. The recipes are a little more time-consuming, the ingredients a little harder to find, but the result is wonderful. Jacques Pepin is simpler (and excellent) and French Laundry Cookbook is even more complicated (but also excellent) - Terra is a great in-between.
I've cooked over 10 of their recipes already and every single one has turned out really well. They're not simple nor for a beginner cook, but if you have a little experience, it'll make for some very memorable dinners.
The desserts are especially great, as are the appetizers.
A Masterpiece for the Kitchen.......2001-03-25
For those of you fortunate enough to have dined at this world class restaurant, Hiro & Lissa'a book needs no introduction. I was fortunate enough to have found Terra shortly after it opened in 1988 (living in St. Helena at the time) & have been hooked ever since. The BEST dishes of their menus past & present are included in this beautifully illustrated book. Most importantly the instructions are well detailed & the dishes turn out exactly as they do in the restaurant. What more can I say? THIS IS A FABULOUS BOOK!!!!!
Awesome and amazing..........2001-01-03
Much like it's worthy counterpart's book (Tra Vigne), this wonderful piece should not fail to delight and please all those who happen across it.
First, if you are lucky enough to have dined at Terra, you'll already understand the beauty of (and behind) this book. Quite simply, this is a work of art. Why is that the case? Well...
Design--Beautiful graphic design and photographs. The layout is incredible and the photos are enough to make you drool.
Dialogue--Add to that delightful text and dialogue. Much closer to what this book achieves is the word "prose" as opposed to merely "text." The stories and dialogue are true pleasure to read. It makes this much more than simply a "cookbook."
Recipes--The recipes are, much like the food at the restaurant, exquisite. They are just delicious. Their difficulty ranges from relatively easy to moderately difficult. But, they are very easy to follow, making even the harder recipes accessible to the average "joe."
I strongly urge those considering this one to just go ahead and make the purchase. You will not be disappointed. It will be book you will treasure, and will reach for time and again.
Also, look into the Tra Vigne cookbook. It too is on the same level as this piece.
Drool.......2000-12-22
A mouth water sensantion to read and view - before you even get to cook a dish. If you'v ever been to Terra you know what I mean and if you ever go to Napa Valley - you won't want to miss the opportunity to dine at Terra.

Good Book for Beginners.......2005-06-01
The emphasis of this book is surface decoration techniques in general. Most of the ceramics techniques in this book you will already know something about if you have had a good ceramics class. If the topics listed are new to you, then this book is a great introduction. If you've already been exposed to them, then this book does not take you farther.
There is not a lot of specific low-temperature information, other than a few recipes (which can be quite useful). In particular, I was hoping for a book that would help me approach the effects of high temperature glazes when working with a low temperature kiln, how to modify a high temperature glaze recipe to be suitable for lower temperature work, how to do glaze calculations, etc.
For an introductory book, it is very good, with good photos, etc. I'm giving it 3 stars simply because it is only introductory.
There are more thorough treatements of surface decoration in ceramics, like Hopper's _Making Marks_. And there are better coverages of ceramics in general that include this surface decoration information, such as Peterson's _Craft & Art of Clay_, which is much larger, but can (at this writing) be purchased inexpensively from discounted booksellers listed through the Amazon page.
LOVE this beautiful and informative book........2001-08-24
I would love to take one of her college courses because Lynn Peters presents material clearly, concisely, and makes it seem like fun! The photographs are beautiful and very inspiring. The first time through I just looked at the pictures and captions. The second time through I read the lessons with pictures step-by-step. Third time, I read every word, and I know I'll refer to it again and again. I appreciated her simple, straightforward style of writing, and how she didn't bog down on details that don't make a lot of difference. If she wrote about it, it is useful info.
Best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration.......2000-06-15
This is absolutely the best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration. The book is in full-color & is packed beautiful example pieces. The author covers everything you need to know in an easy to understand manner. Surface decoration techniques include slips, terra sigillata, underglazes, glazes, maiolica, china paints, decals, & lusters. Formulas for some of these are included by volume & percentage. Seven step-by-step projects that demonstrate use of slips, sgraffito, cutouts, decals, underglazes & maiolica help you to apply what you have learned. A glossary, cone-firing range chart, & resource list are a great bonus. Numerous examples of each style are given in individual galleries throughout the book. I found them all an inspiration. Captions for each piece give information on the artist, clay type, technique & cone.
This is incredible!.......1999-06-07
Where did Lynn Peters come from, and why is this the first I have heard of her? Wow! I have been looking for this book all my career! My students next semester and every semester after that will read this book. Everything I was never exactly sure about is in this book, from maiolica to cone temperatures, and all points in between. All of us ceramics instructors owe a giant hug of thanks to Ms. Peters.
A high-fired endorsement of this low-fire instructional........1999-06-07
As a ceramics instructor at a small art school, I am constantly searching for a suitable text for my students, even going so far as to consider authoring one myself! Fortunately, the world has been spared my awkward diction, and has been blessed with this wonderful instructional text by Lynn Peters. I have been an admirer of Peters' work for some time now, and was delighted to see that she had documented her pursuits. The anecdotal theme of the text even had me reading for its literary quality alone! The photos are wonderful, and provide fantastic insight into the actual process of creating ceramic art. I highly recommend this tome to all instructors and students, and will continue to do so until Peters blesses us with my desired sequel! Kudos!

Refreshing book on overhyped subject.......2004-06-20
I've read one book after another about attaining a viable knowledge management solution using corporate portals, and was left wanting because the books either required great leaps of faith or were little more than marketing hype. This book closes all of the gaps between theory and practical application, and backs up assertions with a wealth of case studies that prove the connection between the goal (KM) and the means (portals).
In the first part of the book the authors address knowledge management and portals at the conceptual level. The second part is comprised of case studies that fully support the concepts by showing how results were achieved in a large number of corporate settings. Each case is a study in specific goals and objectives unique to companies that embarked on KM initiatives, and are diverse enough to overlap with your own goals and objectives. The important material covers barriers, how they were overcame, results and how they improved business operations.
The authors are subject matter experts who come across as credible and factual, and the content of this book is accurate and hype-free. I like the way they place KM and portals within the context of business objectives, and the way they impart their extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of KM and portals. It's obvious that they are writing from the trenches, and equally obvious that they maintain an objective view throughout the book. Another aspect of this book that I like is how carefully they chose and documented the case studies. Each goes to the essence of concepts in the first part of the book, and clearly show that KM can be effectively achieved through correctly designed and implemented corporate portals. It's worth noting that Appendix B, "Technical criteria to select a corporate portal platform", is an invaluable tool for readers who are seriously considering an implementation.
If you only read one book about corporate portals this is the one I highly recommend.
Excellent and Practice Case Studies.......2004-02-15
I found this book to be a well researched and practical book for senior executives that want to clearly understand what an enterprise portal is, what the value is, and how to execute a portal strategy. I particularly found the lessons learned and best practices as very helpful insights. Highly recommend this book to be read by any one in senior management that needs the fundamentals, but also more experienced professionals implementing portal strategies.
Keep this book a secret..........2003-08-26
This is the kind of book I actually hesitate to recommend because it is so good my greedy side wants to hoard the valuable knowledge it contains! I am in the "knowledge management" business and believe reading this book has given me a competitive advantage. I also believe that an organization seeking to deploy a knowledge portal of any kind should have this book beside them at all times. José Claudio Terra and Cindy Gordon get to the heart of what all the spending on "portals" is for: to drive value in your business. They also provide a roadmap for ensuring your efforts and spending don't go down as yet another misguided IT boondoggle. The 10 recent and originally researched case studies are like gold. This is a very good book. David Brett, CEO, Knexa.
Practitioner's Point of View.......2003-05-27
I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Cindy Gordon and Dr. Claudio Terra recently at the Knowledge Management Conference in New York, where I attended a workshop with them. Their depth of knowledge in this area is world-class, and the insights they shared in their new book demystified the realities of implementing enterprise corporate portals. Their business strategy accumen, and balanced practical experiences make them a refreshing change to consultants with no substance - as they are experts with strong proven credentialing. What prompted me to write this review was their humbleness in their workshop and openness to learn from us as attendees. Their appetite for learning from those around them was very refreshing and I am looking forward to their next book as well.

The story of the 7,5000 warriors who guard Qin, China's first emperor.......2006-03-21
While on vacation in China, Jane O'Connor visited the thousands of life-sized terracotta warrior statues discovered near the tomb on an emperor in northern China. She was inspired to find out more about both the army of ghostly gray warriors and the man who had ordered their creation. But as O'Connor read everything available about the first emperor and his buried army she discovered that a book on the subject had not yet been written for children. "The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China" rectifies that mistake.
In March 1974 three farmers digging a well near the city of Xian in Lintong County of the People's Republic of China, discovered the clay head of a "pottery man." Neither the farmers nor the archaeologists who arrived to investigate the figure had ever seen anything similar to the life-like figure, and where astounded to discover dozens, and then hundreds and finally thousands of these terracotta figures. When the excavation was done, an army of 7,500 soldiers and horses has been uncovered (so far), after being buried for more than 2,200 years. The life-size figures weighed as much as four hundred pounds each and wore knee-length robes, armor made from small iron "fish scales," and elaborate topknot hairdos (the low-ranking infantrymen did not wear armor). The figures stand at attention and archaeologists also found the hundreds of real bronze swords, daggers, battle-axes, and arrowheads, these silent warriors were carrying.
After sharing the story of the discovery of the figures, O'Connor tells the story of Qin Shihuang, the divine Son of Heaven, who was the first emperor or China. Qin was a paranoid tyrant, and fearing that grave robbers would loot the treasures in his tomb after he died. O'Connor talks about the measures Qin took to protect his final resting place, which included the terracotta figures, stationed in underground trenches, less than a mile from the tomb. The details about the figures, as to why they do not wear helmets or shields and why they are facing east, are quite interesting. There is logic to their arrangement that O'Connor is able to explain, a well as the difference between the 350 chariot horses and the more than 100 cavalry horses. There are more than forty full-color photographs in the book, which help to distinguish between the different types of warriors. The only disappointment here is that there are not more such photographs.
One of the most amazing things about the figures is that of the two thousand unearthed at the time O'Connor's book was published, no two had been discovered to be the same. The figures represent different ages, different parts of China, and even different temperaments. A colored computer image shows how one of the figures would have looked originally when it was painted. Another fascinating section has to do with modern artisans making replicas, following the techniques of 2,200 years ago, to help archeologists understand how the original figures were created. The final chapters of the book are devoted to what it was like inside the Emperor's tomb, where the body may be wearing a jade funeral suit (the government has no intention of actually opening the tomb and looking, but other tombs have been opened in the past to five us some ideas), and Qin's legacy, which is mainly the first Great Wall of China that he had made with a workforce of half a million slave laborers working for a dozen years. However, it would be Qin's silent army that is probably most responsible for what immortality the first emperor possesses today. Seeing them in person would be an unforgettable experience, and O'Connor's book does an excellent job of making that impression on her readers, young and old alike.
Hidden arrows, Poisoned King, and Buried Treasure!.......2002-11-15
Rich with exciting historical details, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China by Jane O'Connor offers a well-researched book that tantalizes the reader with tales of a poisoned King, a camouflaged dead body, and a booby-trapped tomb. The targeted audience of ages 9-12 will thrill with the adventure while simultaneously profiting from their newfound knowledge of China's first Emperor, Qin Shihuang, and his war and burial customs. Heavily strewn with color photographs, computer images, maps, drawings, and charts, the book easily captures interest and successfully holds attention with its succinct wording and short chapters that directly complement the images.
Jane O'Connor's career spanning roles as editor-at-large, president of mass market children's books at Penguin, and prolific author is crowned by her most recent gem, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China. Realizing that no children's books had thoroughly documented the world wonder discovered in China, O'Connor successfully fills the void. This book is a must for any library!
The only negative aspect is that the book fails to be part of a larger history series since once the book is read, the reader will want to read more. The detailed bibliography and author's note provide a scope for further reading on the Terracotta Warriors, but readers will long to learn the same concise and tantalizing information on other subjects as well! Hopefully, Jane O'Connor will follow with more books to engage children and adults since The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China masterfully explores its subject.

As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise.
Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore.... If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg."
Book Description
Cherry-Garrard, who accompanied Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic on the explorer's doomed quest for the South Pole, recounts the unforgettable journey across forbidding, inhospitable terrain. He was also a member of the search party that ultimately discovered Scott's frozen body along with his last notebook entries. With an introduction by the author, this tale of adventure stands out as a literary accomplishment as well as a classic of exploration.

A story of extraordinary courage and grace in adversity.......2007-04-28
Young Aspley Cherry-Garrard was rich enough to buy himself a space on Robert Scott's journey to the Antarctic in 1910. The trip ended badly for Scott, as everyone knows, but it was also a deeply life-altering experience for survivors of the expedition. Returning to England many were loudly criticised for not pressing on in their search for Scott, who as it turned out, died of hunger and cold not so far from where the rescue party turned back. Cherry-Garrard took the criticism very much to heart. Deeply sensitive, he wondered if he could have done more. Years later he wrote his recollections of the expedition in prose so strong and lyrical, yet so measured and insightful, that it illuminates the pages. The "worst journey" of the title is a metaphor for the entire expedition, which ended so badly, and also a literal description of a quixotic side trip that Garrard and some companions took in the middle of a bitterly cold Antarctic winter to retrieve an egg of the Emperor penguin. Mistakenly, as it turned out, one of the scientists on the trip felt that the penguin embryo held some crucial clues to evolutionary history. The little band on that dreadful journey returned to base camp, but after they had been through the most extraordinary privations. Yet though it all, says Garrard, they never forgot their pleases and thank yous. Gentlemen they were, and so they remained even at the point of death.
The expedition was composed of such men and Garrard was certainly among the bravest and best. And how he could write! He put his soul into this book, which has been described (by a well-known travel author) as the best travel book ever written, and perhaps one of the best books ever written. It really is enough to make one proud to be human. And yet the book is not the least self-serving - Garrard was too honest for that. His portrait of Scott, a man dogged more by bad luck than bad management, is required reading for anyone interested in that amazing polar expedition.
Though the book ends with Garrard's return to England, the remainder of his life was rather sad. Plagued with depression, afflicted with ulcerative colitis, he never quite forgave himself for not being able to pull off the miracle needed to save Scott and his companions. Though he was a only a junior member of the expedition - in the end crucial decisions were made by others - that seemed not to have comforted him much. And unfortuately he has not been well served by the biography "Cherry" by Caroline Alexander - she seems basically out-of-sympathy with her subject. In the end Cherry-Garrard's book stands as his legacy, and what a legacy it is.
Can you review a book that you did not entirely read?.......2007-04-21
I read about 50 pages and had to quit. Time was, I would never do that. I'm older now, and if the writing is way too verbose and stuck in irrelevant details that do not lend anything to the story, I quit. I really like adventure books and was surprised that this one wouldn't grab me. I don't think it is the story (from other reviews, the story is a good one); seems that the author and I just don't mix.
Maybe I will pick it up again at some time and give it another shot. Looking at the size of this book, it is unlikely. If I do, I will give it a fair review.
To put this review in context, I happened to have LOVED the story of Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Go figure.
Truly great........2007-04-11
I read quite a bit, and this is one of the best books I have read.
Antarctic journeys.......2007-01-10
This book has a rather heavy text but nevertheless is an excellent read.
Gripping story!.......2006-08-04
This is an inspiring, suspenseful story full of rich detail about what life on The Ice was like for these brave men who spent almost 3 years there in the early years of this century, when sails were still used on ships. The beauty, richly described by Cherry; the torturous conditions at times, how they kept busy and sane during the long long dark winter....I was completely enthralled even though I knew at least the rough outlines of the story before I began. I highly recommend it.
