2018: COUNTDOWN TO APOCALYPSE

Two worlds are locked in mortal conflict. The aliens of the Tenth Planet must harvest Earth's vast resources soon--before their world's elliptical orbit hurls them back into deep space for another 2000 years. If they fail, their species cannot survive the long journey into the void. This is their last chance to avoid extinction.

On Earth, scientists work frantically to stop the huge alien fleet, but even nuclear weapons have only slowed the attackers' dreadful onslaught. Now the ultimate battle for the fate of Earth--and all human life--draws near. And as more powerful weapons are brought to bear, winning the war may be more devastating than the invasion.

A thrilling science fiction saga of epic proportions, THE TENTH PLANET: FINAL ASSAULT delivers high-tech action and pulse-pounding drama that culminate in the explosive finale to a rousing trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars Worth your time.......2003-10-09

This is the third book and follows Tenth Planet and Tenth Planet Oblivion. I gave this one four stars instead of the five I gave the first two books because I was led to believe that this story was a trilogy not an open ended series. Don't get me wrong, I like long stories, but I wasn't expecting it here. I was expecting a satisfying conclusion to the Tenth Planet trilogy, but instead I got an exciting ending to book three and an open invitation for a sequel.

So, where is book four? It doesn't seem to have been written and I want it! Anyone know if Smith will/has written book four?

4 out of 5 stars An easy and fun read.......2001-11-25

The third and final book in the Tenth Planet series. Somebody earlier said it was pure escapism and they were correct. I read this strictly for fun and I enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars Fast-paced adventure novel.......2001-11-14

In the third and final book of the series, Smith describes Earth and Malmuria (our solar system's tenth planet) locked again in mortal struggle. Both worlds have gained experience from their previous encounter six months before and are now prepared to confront each other with new resources and knowledge. The war is a fierce one, for only one species can win.

This is the type of book that would make a perfect movie. Much action, many dialogues, places which are described but would much better be seen on screen, planes, spaceships which would make the special effects people happy. This is how you must think of this book: an adventure/SF movie. You should not look for philosophy or character development, monologues, any "serios literature" stuff. This book does not intend to do that.

It is easy-reading, but pleasant nevertheless, the action is fast-paced, it keeps you on your toes all the time, the suspense is mastered beautifully.

The book gets a minus (hence 4/5 stars) because of the human characters. The book pictures the entire human race as prejudiced. The aliens are more human than the humans.
The aliens explain the reasons for their actions all the time and are considerate towards the human race - before the war had started, every time they had "harvested" the Earth they had tried to do minimal damage to the population. Their violence, which shocks so much Earth's people, is never unjustified, it is dictated only by their will to survive - and we all can understand that.
On the other hand, humans always refer to the aliens as "those bastards", they only want to "blast them off", think only of killing them. Never once did they try to find a way to solve the conflict other than by completely exterminating the Malmuria. Kind of like Will Smith in "Independence Day": "Take that, you bastard". If that sums up the human attitude towards an alien species, I'm disappointed.

And another thing: I had expected the nano-stuff Portia designed to be more used. All that work... for nothing. This was quite a let-down.

Still, a pleasant reading. And I appreciated the quite unexpected ending... read it to see what I mean.

3 out of 5 stars Pure escapism.......2001-07-09

Although published as three separate books, the Tenth Planet trilogy should really have been released as a single compilation. None of the three books are able to stand on their own. As a set, they are a light but engaging read. These books are pure escapist fun, with stereotypical characters, some plausible pseudo science and a fast paced plot. As long as you are not expecting great literature like Gene Wolfe and are prepared for sci fi that is more in the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs, you will enjoy this series.

In the third and final book in this series, Earth and the Tenth Planet are locked in a battle for survival. Badly damaged and knowing that they are faced with extinction unless they can harvest most of Earth's resources, the Malmurians turn to their distant past and the spirits of their Elders to find weapons to subdue Earth. Meanwhile, the elite of Earth's scientists work frantically to develop new weapons in their fight against the alien menace.

If you enjoyed this series then you will probably like the Heritage Trilogy by Ian Douglas, which is far better written.

5 out of 5 stars The whole novel is one climax.......2000-12-17

I must admit after the second novel of this trilogy I was slightly disappointed because it did not have an ending and it was too obvious that the editors wanted to make money because they knew readers had been hooked by the story so far. I still think that books two and three should be one book really. But the editors do not get stars (they would not get any star for their lousy selling policy!) But what a recompense! This book is one of the most exciting reads of science fiction I have ever read. It is breathtaking, full of nerveracking suspense, and you do not lay it down once you have started reading. The characters are well chosen, their motivations and actions very credible. Even the aliens do no longer appear as technically superior but a little stupid nevertheless. The authors give them a soul and more "humanity". In this way a kind of tragedy can develop. The two races will never be able to be on friendly terms with each other, for technical reasons and because of their conflicting struggles for survival. So the ending is not the common and triumphant "We have won!", but "What will be?" with a reflective sadness. A perfect book!

One piece of advice: If you want to read this book, make sure you read it after the two first ones. You will lose a lot if you do not read them in their numeric order.

2017: BACK FROM THE SUN

For aeons, Earth has been ravaged by so-called natural disasters. Now we know the primary cause: overharvesting of our limited resources--not by humans, but by the residents of our solar system's tenth planet.

Since before the birth of humanity, every two thousand years, this dark planet has plundered our world. But in 2017, Earth fought back. Now thousands of aliens face starvation. To survive, they must harvest Earth when their orbit brings them back from behind the sun.

But the humans are not waiting for Earth to become as parched and barren as Mars. Every nuclear weapon has been aimed at the Tenth Planet. Their ultimate goal--to blow the Tenth Planet to oblivion.

In part two of the Tenth Planet saga, cutting-edge science and high drama combine in an adventure that questions humanity's history, our place in the universe . . . and our very right to exist.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, unique perspective........2004-11-01

Hibernating aliens on an orbital asteroid waking up every millenia or so to "harvest" the earth...only to find Humankind has evolved, and is now taking offense at their table manners.

Interesting scenario, ok book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel to The Tenth Planet.......2003-10-09

What can I say, Smith has produced another great book. The Tenth Planet: Oblivion continues the story of Earth's struggle for survival against the aliens from the Tenth Planet.

The first battle has been lost, but Earth has finally gotten its act together and is ready to retaliate. Every nuclear bomb and rocket has been launched to intercept the alien menace as it rounds our sun on its way back toward Earth.

Great book and very easy reading. I read books one and two in a day. I'm starting book three right now!

4 out of 5 stars Middle Ground.......2003-05-14

The Tenth Planet: Oblivion is not as riveting as the first book in the trilogy, but the action does pick up in the second half of the book. In this middle book, we see much more about the aliens. The authors show a great deal of imagination in presenting beings so foreign to us, and yet with a sense of ethics and emotions that are close to human. It's an interesting twist that these aliens are not evil, but it comes down to their survival or ours. The characterization of the humans is fair but not great. This is definitely a story of plot, not characterization. There is no great moral message that I've seen so far. I give the book 4 stars for two reasons. First, the creativity and great plot line begun in the first book of the trilogy keeps the reader eagerly pursuing the outcome. Secondly, reviews indicate that the third book, which I'm about to begin, is satisfying and better than this second book. All in all, I think any science fiction fan will like this series. It is set in the near future, making it more "real" than the far-out stuff you can try to wade through. It seems plausible that these things could happen. Enough writing--I'm headed for the couch to begin the next iteration!

2 out of 5 stars Its only saving grace was that it was a very easy read........2001-09-26

This was a stupid book. It's only saving grace was that it was a very easy read. This trilogy started off with a good premise (aliens on a planet with a 2006 year orbit "harvest" large areas of the earth), but just got worse and worse. I don't think the folks hired to write this book (nominally, the "authors") cared about it much either.

3 out of 5 stars Pure escapism.......2001-07-09

In the second book, Earth has learned the terrible secret of the tenth planet. Not content merely to defend themselves against the rapacious Malmuria, Earth breaks out it's stock of antiquated nuclear weapons and prepares to take the battle to the Malmurians on their home turf.

If you enjoyed this series then you will probably like the Heritage Trilogy by Ian Douglas, which is far better written.

4 out of 5 stars UPDATE: The Dragon's Tail........2006-06-13

Dear Friends:
The Dragon's Tail is out of print since the death of the publisher, Mr Ron Bonds.
The copyright has reverted to the
authors, Mr Anthony Austin and Mr Brian Crowley. Any new
printing of this title is illegal and may be the subject of
legal proceedings. However, the book was reissued by Black Rabbit Press as
'Draco: The Tenth Planet' in 2003 with some
necessary corrections including the insertion of several pages
missing in the original. The text has not been altered except
where essential, as for instance a few incorrect calculations.
The intended purchaser of this text is therefore advised to
search Amazon in the US or UK for 'Draco: the Tenth Planet'
where the book is readily available on demand. If not found then contact the publisher: Black Rabbit Press, 15 Homewood,
Findon, UK, BN14 0XA. This new version is printed by Lightning
Source in the UK and USA on demand on orders down to and including a single copy.

Regarding the predictions printed in 2000, these have not been
altered in any way. The original stated that a tenth planet
would be found at 92.7 AU average distance and astronomers
have indeed discovered a tenth planet at 97 AU (approx) along with a few others belonging to the so-called Kuiper Belt.
This represents more than a guess.

Regarding our 'agenda' for the 21st century, this has so far
proved correct in every respect; notably our insistence that
Africa would be depopulated which has been unfortunately proved
to be true. This has been caused by disease and warfare
combined with a reluctance on the part of the 'west' to do
anything except to permit a regular and increasing supply
of arms, carried by children as young as eight. Climate
change will do the rest, leaving an empty continent that
will only be repopulated come the new Ice Age.

In distinction to current fears of global warming, the authors
say that the world will suddenly be plunged into the deep
freeze starting in 2115, which may not seem to matter to
anyone alive today, but is nevertheless being planned for by
those whose descendants will expect to rule the world in the
22nd century. At that time, Africa will become a food basket
for the frozen north. Everything said is quite logical given
a scenario where an overdue ice age suddenly plunges humanity
into survival mode where 99% of the peak population of 8.3
billion people are wiped out.

Maybe you don't care. Fair enough. Go back to watching the
dumbed down TV and wait until the seas rise beyond your ken.
Never do anything until it is too late and then blame it all
on God.

Tony Austin

5 out of 5 stars The truth about this book..........2002-01-12

Hi there. I'm the gypsy who wrote about 60% of 'The Dragon's Tail'. Brian Crowley, an orthodox Jew, wrote 5% and Mr Christopher Mundy, an American, wrote the rest. The two last named got scared and don't want to know. The publisher, Ron Bonds died of a mystery infection in April 2001. He left a widow, Nancy Bonds, who also wants to get rid of TdT in case anyone wants to buy IllumiNet off her. Don't expect rights to TDT because I own it outright. None of us ever got any royalties and nobody wants to reprint. In the last chapter we told you what would happen in America from 2001 onwards and it did. The first reviewer here hasn't even read the cover blurb because we said the last pass of the Dragon was in the 13th C.tonyaustin@bushinternet.com bye

Baillie, Clube/Napier, Velikovsky, and other scholars, as well as Sitchin. What about periodic and predictable celestial chaos? LaViolette, Sitchin, Baillie, Clube/Napier...

The author claims that a tenth planet whistles on past the other planets at 892 year intervals, meaning that the most recent pass was no longer ago than 1109 AD, and has happened at least twice since Julius Caesar was a boy. This book may be worth reading, but not at this price. Try the local library, and if not found, ask them to purchase it for the lending collection.

You are holding in your hands what may prove to be the definitive casebook of humanity, reaching back some 15,000 years into the past and now made accessible by the researches of a diverse pair of lay scholars. Evidence presented here from history, science and astronomy reveals that earth undergoes dramatic climatic changes at 892 year intervals, creating a universal disaster of doomsday proportions.

The massive wave of extinctions that occurred around 15,000 years ago in the animal kingdom, the sinking of Plato's Atlantis, the voyage of Noah's Ark, the plagues that beset Egypt at the time of the Exodus, and even the Little Ice Age of the 13th century, may all have a common cause - a rogue tenth planet (we call Draco) in our Solar System. This is the outermost planet of the Solar System, orbiting the Sun only once in 892 years.

Draco caused the destruction of the planet that once orbited between Mars and Jupiter, and it still cuts through the plane of the asteroids, creating more new comets and Earth-crossing asteroids every time it visits us. When it passes by, a great shower of dust cools our climate!

Draco will sweep by Earth again in the year 2115! The real countdown to doomsday can now begin!

2017: NEAR THE PLANET URANUS

After a deep-space satellite mysteriously stops transmitting, the Hubble III telescope picks up a startling image. Astronomers don't know what the strange object is--only that it orbits past Earth every two millennia.

Meanwhile, archaeologist Leo Cross has discovered peculiar layers of black residue at dig sites around the globe. Stranger still, these thin bands occur like clockwork every 2,006 years, coinciding with some of the world's darkest moments in history.

We have six months to prepare for the next arrival. This time we know something is coming. This time we have weapons to defend us.

This time we'll be wrong . . . again.

A science fiction saga set on near-future Earth, THE TENTH PLANET challenges our basic beliefs about the solar system and ultimately our place in the universe. With cutting-edge astronomy, blockbuster action, and high drama, the mystery is revealed in a trilogy of adventures.

3 out of 5 stars "A Fun Read".......2004-01-02

So it's not a deep book, but so what. Smith and Rusch have crafted a very cool story about a rogue planet that comes into Earth's orbit every 2,006 years and wreaks havoc. One of the best aspects of the book is the path the characters take in trying to figure out all they can about the Tenth Planet and what it will do when it gets here. Pretty good character development, especially with the two archeologists, Cross and Bradshaw. While Cross is more ready to take a risk than others, Bradshaw is cautious to the point of fear. This is because of a finding he made 20 years prior that ruined his reputation. The aliens were handled very nicely. Not you typical evil alien conquerors. I really enjoyed the scenes from their points of view. And man, are they freaky looking things! The climax wasn't bad, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-10-09

The Tenth Planet is great fun. I read it in one sitting and followed it with the second book--Tenth Planet: oblivion. What can I say? These books are pure escapism. It's a simple story that goes something like this:

An archaeologist notices a black layer in one of his digs. He doesn't think anything of it at first. Forest fires in ancient times do leave such layers only not as thick, but when he notices the exact same thing at the same depth in two other sites, he becomes intrigued and begins to investigate. What he finds is horrifying. The black ash isn't ash at all and isn't caused by fire.

It seems that every 2006 years, something happens to cause those black layers in which all organic life dies--EVERY 2006 years, and guess how long the last one was... you got it! Now he's in a race against time to make his government aware that something from space is coming, and in less than a year!

Great fun.

5 out of 5 stars Gee, I sure hope the sequels are as good!.......2003-05-11

I just finished reading The Tenth Planet and rushed to write this review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The aliens were truly alien, instead of the usual different-appearance-but-almost-human brand that's so common. They weren't even evil, but clearly they and we cannot coexist. Their depiction was extremely thoughtful and creative. As for the humans, if the plot were not so fantastic and the action so riveting, I might say the characters could have been developed a little better. The lack of depth seems to be par for the course in this type of Sci-Fi thriller, so I'm not so critical as some. Also, it didn't bother me in the least that this book had no conclusion--it's a trilogy! Anyone reading reviews now can buy all 3 books at once, and not lose a precious moment waiting for next release! I have to give this book 5 stars for the sheer entertainment...when I can't wait to get to the next page throughout the entire book, I know I've found a gem! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2003-05-07

This is a great book that you have trouble putting down! I strongly suggest reading The Tenth Plant Oblivion and The Tenth Planet Final Assualt.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting premise, faulty execution.......2002-03-05

The Tenth Planet is the first of a trilogy of books (Tenth Planet: Oblivion & Tenth Planet: Final Assault) that appears to have been written as a tie-in to a video game. The first book is a good light read that raises some interesting plot threads that unfortunately are not followed through with books 2 and 3. It seems as if most of the effort for this series was placed in book one and rest of the series is uninteresting filler written to fulfill the book contact.

5 out of 5 stars Alien evidence by primitive man.......2003-08-31

Fantastic Book! I can't believe the physical evidence presented here that I didn't know about. He shows us clay tablets with our solar system having a teneth planet. He shows ancient alien statues from Israel. They're about 10yrs.old. His pictures of the Easter Island giants with a Flying sauecver on top of its head. This supports a new theory of the Owl man in Nazca Peru looking like an alien pointing to where they live, in space. Just like the Statues of easter Island. This book theorizes that primitive mans gods weren't the magical spirit gods of religion, but the advanced technologies of the Roswell N.M. aliens. We do have Roswell! The big headed gray that all look the same. He says that we are them addicted to the beauty of flesh. We are time-traveling in a body we shouldn't be in. He says we are them and we can't stand our ugliness as an alien. We conquered space and couldn't control our addiction to the conquering of scientific creation. A creation that became and is the most powerful addiction in the universe, mankind. His evidence is mind-boggling, down to the discovery of gold replacing ozone layers. It became the symbol for these gods the minute they left, and then men became gods. Michael's theory is supported by solid evidence referred to in the question that is quoted on the back of his book. I love it,"Trace mankind's mystery to the pursuit of gold for the gods" Shouldn't we all know about golds scientific importance to these gods? Why would our religious gods need it? But then again shouldn't we all know about the tenth planet? The quote ends with, "THe scientific facts will shock you". You've got to get this sequel to the "Two Witnesses and the religion cover-up". He's releasing a third and final book in spring of 2004. It's called the future. I can't wait to see it. He said we are looking at it now and then showed me a picture of Johnny Cash looking at a flying saucer. I believe it. I do have dejavu! I do love beauty of the flesh! Incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See a picture of Johnny Cash and real flying saucer! Also worlds largest ancient one on Easter Island Head along with cave drawing of one that is 15000yrs old.The author provides pictures of all this and more including the owl man from lines of Nazca, Aboriginee gods that look like aliens as well and the hopi indian gods. Learn how they reasearched religion and found it came from primitive man. They theorize that primitive man created the spirit magic factor of religion because they were in awe of these sky gods advanced technologies. This search was made famous in their first great book "THE TWO WITNESSES AND THE RELIGION COVER-UP" by Michael Brumfield. This is the sequel. See how his first name is prophecied by the jews to save the earth. Then see the hopi prophecy. It shows a big headed god saving the earth.Their discoveries lead them to the scientific importance of god that neccessitated their manipulation of primitive man to create the perfect worker. MODERN MAN is the missing link if we accept this alien evidence as proof of their existence. They theorize that we aren't natures creation and therefore a mystery because they can't co-habitate with us. Worse yet, they became us through scientific advances in cloning and DNA break-throughs. They wanted to experience power through the beauty of the flesh.Their answer for the separation that caused this mystery is connected to gold and the reason they created in the first place. It replaces ozone layers. Hence, it became the gods symbol when they left. See all these pictures in his book including an actual alien skull found by the indians of Northern Mexico where they have legends of these sky gods mixing with the daughters of men because they were pretty. This makes their theory logical and supports all religious beginnings having a fall due to a power struggle. They are all equal and machine for time travel. But there's no way out. You have to live it. And wow! We do have De-javu....But most importantly look at the front cover fo his book for all the proof you need of this reality. It is a mother goddess statue with an alien head. Now we know what these gods look like! And check out how the Yin and Yeng supports this by being two sperm and an egg.

3 out of 5 stars End of the first Doctor and introduction of Cybermen.......2000-10-18

'The Tenth Planet' is one of the most important Doctor Who stories. Not only does it introduce one of the Doctor's most popular foes, the Cybermen, but it also introduces the concept of regeneration, and important factor in the series longevity. It is adapted by one of the co-authors of the original script, Gerry Davis.

The TARDIS arrives on Earth in the year 2000 (a departure from the original script, where it was set in 1986!) at the Antarctic. They are captured by troops from the nearby space base, Snowcap, where a space flight which is being monitored is off course for no apparent reason. And then the reason is sighted: a new planet, a duplicate of Earth, is seen in space...

Mondas is inhabited by the Cybermen, once human who have replaced their limbs by plastic and steel, and their brains by computers. (A handy guide to the creation of the Cybermen appears before the story starts.) They are seeking to invade Earth for reasons that become plain towards the end of the book.

The book isn't bad. It is archetypal B-grade science fiction, much like many of the stories in the second Doctor's era, but as long as you aren't expecting highly original science fiction you'll be fine.

    2 out of 5 stars annoying.......2000-01-11

The first appearance of the Cybermen. The last Hartnell story. The last Ben and Polly before the arrival of Jamie. The introduction of Troughton. The first regeneration story. The holy grail of the destroyed episodes. This should have been--NO--it had to be a much better book than this but it isn't. A thoroughly pedestrian and lackluster affair. In fact, I'm still not even sure of some of the basic plotpoints. The first chapter of John Peel's POWER OF THE DALEKS which acts as a recap and epilogue to this story is more effective and better written than the novel The Tenth Planet itself. One of the most important DOCTOR WHO stories ever and we get this. Arrgh! There was so much potential here. Davis could have added so much back story on earth history, could have added real sadness to Hartnell's farewell, told us so much about the Doctor's great adversaries The Cybermen(one of this reviewers favorite series monsters). Instead we get connect the dots writing. Still, it is a book all Who fans must have. Sigh.
