They Died With Custer Forgets Lieutenant Harrington.......2006-07-01
A very good book and recommended. It does however fall short with its look at Lt. Henry Harrington, commander of Company C during the battle. The forensic reconstruction figure on page 172 is Lt. Harrington, one of the long missing officers whose remains were not found after the battle. The authors are not alone in missing the resemblance to the 1872 West Point graduate whose remains have lain in the Smithsonian Institution for more than a century.
This oversight by historians and anthropologists alike is corrected in the book "Custer's Lost Officer the Search for Lieutenant Henry Moore Harrington, 7th U.S. Cavalry by Walt Cross. I recommend that if you purchase this book you also purchase the Cross book ISBN: 0-9771926-1-X. In "Custer's Lost Officer" Harrington is identified as the soldier the Sioux called "The bravest man the Sioux ever fought."
Digging into the Little Bighorn.......2006-02-21
This book should be a considered a companion book to the others written detailing the results of the numerous battlefield investigations following the 1984 brush fire, particularly "Archaeology, History, and Custer's Last Battle: The Little Big Horn Reexamined."
While this book goes into detail about the individual soldiers and the remains found at numerous marker pairs across the field, the other title gives the new forensic based chronology of the battle. I was a park visitor in 1984, and two time subsequent to that date. It is amazing how the interpretation of the battle has changed since then. The new explanation answers many of the nagging questions that have fed the Custer Myth. Scott's book in particular explodes the myth of the noble fighting bunkmates or suicide pacts, that rose from the apparent grave stone pairs that dot the battlefield, and the apparent mis match between the number of markers and the number of soldiers that were killed. Exhumation of numerous such sites revealed in all cases only the partial remains of one individual. The fact that so many ramains were found at so many of the sites, and that markers intended for the Reno Field were placed on the Custer Field, calls into question the thoroughness of the reburial details subsequent to the battle. Remnants and nearly complete skeletal remains were found. Makes you wonder how many horse bones are under the marker on mis-named Last Stand Hill. Scott makes a valiant attempt to include attributed artifacts and remains previously found on the battlefield to expand his data population. A noble endeavor. Some of the biggest questions regarding the battle may never be known due to the construction of the park visitors center, parking lot and Veterans Cemetary. Scott's book adds new indespensible information to the updated unglorified story of the Little BigHorn. A must read for anyone interested in the Little Bighorn.
Its about the men this time...........2004-03-08
I thought this was a well written, easy to read and utterly interesting book on the archeological research done around the Custer Battlefield (Little Big Horn Battlefield for the politically correct). The book centered around the common soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry instead of its more infamous commander. The study of human remains helped give a "slice of life" look at the regular cavalrymen of the Seventh Cavalry and how the battle went according to archeological finds of bullets, casing and where the men of Seventh fell during the battle. It was also interesting to read about how they tried to identified some of the remains they found. The book should be consider as a mandatory reading material for anyone interested in the battle of Little Bighorn.
Digging into Little Bighorn Battlefield.......2000-08-12
A well-written summary of more than a decade's analysis of battlefield archeology. Fascinating identification of several bodies from a few bones, especially those well-know persons who were found in sites other than where eyewittnesses placed them in written history. The book suffers, however, by a brief and weak synopsis that fails in its attempt to draw too-broad conclussions about the entire frontier population from a few soldiers' bones.
They died with Custer........2000-04-05
This was a superbly written volume outlining the archaeological reclaimation of the battlefield site of the Little Big Horn. A military archeologist (Scott), a forensic archeologist (Conner), and a forensics anthropologist (Willey) combined talents to preserve and identify the material evidence of the events that took place there after a wildfire stripped the scene of vegitation and exposed the site to erosive processes and human curiosity. The book details: 1) the history of the 7th Cavalry, including among other things, the age of the soldiers, their origin, and length of service, 2) the efforts to identify individual soldiers and the location of their fall in battle, 3) the effect of the rigorous life on the frontier on the health of the soldiers, 4) etc. I found particularly interesting the efforts to reconstruct the facial features of some of the skulls in an effort to identify the remains with specific people. This is a good text of archaeology at work.
Book Description
The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, which won the young David Rabe an Obie and was hailed by The New York Times as “rich in humor, irony, and insight,” is the story of a naive recruit’s initiation into war. Sticks and Bones concerns a blinded Vietnam veteran who, returning home numbed by the war, is astonished by his family’s inability to comprehend their country’s politics and his rage.
Book Description
"[W]hat is true of Rwanda is true in each of us; we all share in Africa." L'Harmattan
"[This novel] comes closer than have many political scientists or historians to trying to understand why this small country . . . sank in such appalling violence." Radio France International
In April of 1994, nearly a million Rwandans were killed in what would prove to be one of the swiftest, most terrifying killing sprees of the 20th century. In Murambi, The Book of Bones, Boubacar Boris Diop comes face to face with the chilling horror and overwhelming sadness of the tragedy. Now, the power of Diop's acclaimed novel is available to English-speaking readers through Fiona Mc Laughlin's crisp translation. The novel recounts the story of a Rwandan history teacher, Cornelius Uvimana, who was living and working in Djibouti at the time of the massacre. He returns to Rwanda to try to comprehend the death of his family and to write a play about the events that took place there. As the novel unfolds, Cornelius begins to understand that it is only our humanity that will save us, and that as a writer, he must bear witness to the atrocities of the genocide.
From the novel: "If only by the way people are walking, you can see that tension is mounting by the minute. I can feel it almost physically. Everyone is running or at least hurrying about. I meet more and more passersby who seem to be walking around in circles. There seems to be another light in their eyes. I think of the fathers who have to face the anguished eyes of their children and who can't tell them anything. For them, the country has become an immense trap in the space of just a few hours. Death is on the prowl. They can't even dream of defending themselves. Everything has been meticulously prepared for a long time: the administration, the army, and the [militia] are going to combine forces to kill, if possible, every last one of them."

The Civil War is at an end, but for thirteen-year-old Eulinda, it is no time to rejoice. Her younger brother Zeke was sold away, her older brother Neddy joined the Northern war effort, and her master will not acknowledge that Eulinda is his daughter. Her mettle is additionally tested when she realizes her brother Neddy might be buried in the now-closed Andersonville Prison where soldiers were kept in torturous conditions. Wowzer.......2006-11-12
I loved this book!It was reccomended by the librarian at my school. I was surprised that slave masters had affairs with their slaves. My opinion on the book has no effect on what you think, read it for yourself!
Basically the book takes place in 1864. It is about a slave girl before and after she was given freedom. She is named Eudlina. She ends up working for Clara Barton. I wont give away anymore.
:)READ IT FOR YOURSELF!!!:)
Numbering all the bones.......2006-04-05
I think the book was excellent because it taught me more about slavery and the old days. The setting is in southern alabama. The problem of this book is a girl fighting to keep her father alive and still do her work. I really enjoyed this book.
Numbering All The Bones.......2006-01-27
This book is called Numbering All The Bones. It is a historical fiction book written by Ann Rinaldi.
Eulina is a house slave, during the Civil War. She has been through many hardships, some of which being, her younger brother, Zeke, being sold away, her older brother, Neddy, who ran away to join the Northern Army, and her mother, dying of illness.Eulinda is torn between her master, who is also her true father, and her fellow slaves. She is faced with the choice of staying in the South or going Notrh , and being free.
I think this book is one of the best books I have read by Ann Rinaldi. This book will appeal most to those who like historical fiction and books that expess African American slaves' journey through life.

Product Description
In 1984, The People branded Ian Bone 'the most dangerous man in Britain'. They weren't far wrong. From the inner city riots of 1981 to the miners' strike and beyond, the butler's son and founder of Class War was indeed a greater thorn in Margaret Thatcher's side than the useless blatherings of the Official Opposition. Class War were the real opposition! It was Ian Bone who linked the inner city rioters of Brixton and Handsworth with the striking miners. It was Bone who The People spotted rioting with miners in Mansfield, attacking laboratories with the Animal Liberation Front, and who was fingered by the Guardian as the man behind the 1985 Brixton Riot. But that was only the half of it... from 1965 to 1985, from Swansea to Cardiff and London the mayhem spread countrywide. In Bash The Rich Ian Bone tells it like it was. From The Angry Brigade to The Free Wales Army, from the 1967 Summer of Love to 1977 anarcho-punk, from Grosvenor Square to the Battle of the Beanfield, from the Stop the City riots to Bashing the Rich at the Henley Regatta, Ian Bone breaks his silence. In the 1980s, Ian Bone was 'The Anarchist In The UK' with a half brick in one hand and an incendiary pen in the other. Better yet though, this is more than just a litany of riots and rucks, however exciting. Its a thoughtful examination of class, and struggle, and social change. And a wonderful, vital piece of social and political history.
Product Description
On March 24, 2001, American writer Kari Grady Grossman entered a crowded orphanage outside Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and met her 8-month-old son. One of the first questions Kari asked was "How did he get here?" The complex and at times heart-wrenching answer is told in this magnificent book encompasses Kari's personal journey to adoption, Cambodia's gruesome history of war and genocide, and the stories of two Cambodians -- one who escaped the Khmer Rouge s bloody reign and one who did not. The interweaving stories grab your heartstrings and do not let go. From the moment Kari realizes that she will never be an "earth momma" practicing prenatal yoga to years later as Kari wends her way on the back of a moto-taxi through Phnom Penh's smog-chocked streets trying to make a difference in her son's birth nation, you can t read impassively. Bones That Float takes you into the Khmer Rouge jungle where boy soldiers force starving families to labor all day at gunpoint, and it brings you to modern-day Phnom Penh streets where foreign pedophiles purchase the innocence of preteen Cambodian girls. But ultimately Bones That Float -- a Cambodian phrase for the sacred that rises above the suffering -- is a tale of hope. Kari reminds us that our world is "one big family" and that we cannot -- or dare not -- turn our backs on people who suffer in part because of our country s own foreign policy missteps. To read Bones That Float is to open your heart to caring.
Customer Reviews:
A "read-in-one-sitting"-book.......2007-08-31
With unflinching honesty and well-researched facts, Ms. Grossman details the plight of Cambodia's children while her personal story of advocacy for them empasizes with action what meaningless political rhetoric cannot address.
This book will prick your conscience and will have you asking "what's *my* Cambodia?"
Very highly recommended.
Triple Hit.......2007-06-27
This book is a very well-written account of three large topics - international adoption, Camboadian history and a successful sustainable, replicable education change project. It's a quick read in spite of the ambitious content. A great book for a book club review, especially since Kari will join your group by phone for a discussion.
Riveting Story of Adopting Cambodia a "Must-Read".......2007-06-13
I love books in which the author incorporates storytelling to convey a message. "Bones that Float: A Story of Adopting Cambodia," does that exceptionally well. In this riveting non-fiction book that reads like a novel, author Kari Grady Grossman--a documentary producer--brings the fabric of life in Cambodia alive through word pictures.
While it's officially the story of Kari and her husband George's journey to adopt an 8-month-old boy from Cambodia in 2001, "Bones that Float" is much, much more than that. Kari weaves two additional, fascinating storylines through the book, helping us to better understand the era between the Cambodian war in the early 1970s to the Khmer Rouge reign of terror to the reality of life in modern-day Cambodia. Kari narrates through the eyes of two Cambodians who grew up during the Khmer Rouge regime--one who later immigrated to the United States, and one who still lives in Cambodia.
Distressing and deeply moving, "Bones that Float" raises the bar for adoption-related memoirs. Add it to your "must read" list.
The Adoption Decision: 15 Things You Want to Know Before Adopting
A must read for multi-cultural adoptive families.......2007-06-06
As an adoptive parent of a daughter from China I am both fascinated and daunted by the prospect of trying to keep her connected to her history and let her be a girl growing up in the United States. Kari does a beautiful job of exploring the complexity of these issues and the brutal realities of modern Cambodia. Gaining understanding of another family's adoption story, a Cambodian refugee family's history, and a Cambodian taxi driver who cannot leave, provide me much greater insight to engage in conversations with my daughter about her life. Thank you Kari for broadening my perspectives.
Amazing Book -- couldn't put it down! A must read!.......2007-05-25
Kari's book is one of the best books I have ever read (and I read a lot)! This book is not only for adoptive parents but anyone who shares a vision of understanding the world in which we live and how to make it a better place for everyone, especially women and children! The manner in which she weaves her own journey to adopt her son with the journey of another Cambodian family that lived through the Khmer Rouge and then immigrated to the U.S. under the refugee program is heartwrenching and filled with history I never knew about Cambodia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Kari has a gift for writing and touching your heart and making you feel like you are with her as she travels in Cambodia. Note that the proceeds benefit a school for children in Cambodia. You cannot read this book and NOT feel called to action for the plight of children all over the world! EXCELLENT!

A Great Literary Approach to the Korean War.......2000-07-16
This is an exceptional book. For anyone with any interest in creative literature arising from warfare, whether narrative or poetic, this is a book to have. I have read hundreds of books of military history, stories, and poetry. This, by far, is the best I've seen. I am very familiar with Ehrhart's work -- and he's creative, thoughtful, and a consumate literary pro. All of this shows through here. Of the 204 pages of text, 157 pages consist of twelve stories by different authors. The rest of the book includes 39 poems by six poets. The stories and poems are all of very different styles and complement each other beautifully. One story in particular, "The Trapped Battalion," by William Chamberlain, will blow you away (pardon the pun)! There are two additional excellent and unusual aspects to this volume. First, the two editors give you a brief personal introduction to each author and poet, highlighting their connections with the Korean War and mentioning their personal and literary history as well as prominent themes in their works. Second, at the end of the book they have a detailed annotated list of recommended books, films, and poetry of the Korean War. This is one book I know I will read many times as the years go by.
Product Description
This book examines in thorough detail the promises of George W. Bush, contrasted with the actions delivered and the teachings of Jesus. This conservative Christian attorney argues that Christians have a duty to hold their Christian leaders accountable to the teachings of Christ, and that this includes the self-named "accountability president." Mr. Bush gained the White House solely by wooing the religious right, and owes it to America's Christians to be responsive to Christian doctrine. The war in Iraq, the use of torture, and the mass transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich through "compassionate conservatism" and "trickle-down economics" are all reverse-Christian policies implemented by George W. Bush. Instead of being his most ardent supporters, the religious right should be Bush's sharpest critics if they are to follow the teachings of Jesus, who taught that Christians should not blindly follow those who profess the faith, but should test their spirit by examining their actions: "you will know them by their fruits." Moreover, Christ repeatedly warned that those would come who would pretend to be Christians but would lead many astray, false prophets who would be ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing. If Jesus said it would be so....
Every conservative Christian who has read this book and responded to the author has thanked him for the research and clear moral logic which is brought to bear on the most important issues facing America today.
This edition is a limited advance printing of only 1,200 copies, and will be signed by the author.

Customer Reviews:
Not just for scientists.......2006-07-18
The rules and game play are a little confusing at first, but once you have the rules down you'll want to play again. The game is based on the fact that in the past, palentologists sometimes made false claims about their discoveries in order to increase their prestige - and the goal, therefore, of this game is to win the most prestige points. Each player gets a "paleontologist" card that defines some additional aspect of game play for the game. For example, you might get an extra "bone" card each turn, or you might get an extra "event" card. Then, each player gets four bone cards and four event cards. You begin with the "field" phase, move on to the "museum" phase where you actually build your own skeletons, and then the "controversy" phase where you challenge others' skeletons. Games are neither too short nor too long, and once you understand all the various "sections" of game play, it's really pretty easy and fun. Also, easy to play with people you don't know well.

Inspiring.......2004-08-07
With elegant illustrations, Cathy Yow shows us just how abundant Mother Earth really is. Your creative spirit will soar and the possibilities are endless. Beans, bones, shells and sticks become beautiful, one of a kind pieces. The projects require a bit more work than traditional beadwork, but the most complicated tool required is a drill or dremel. Many of the projects could be completed by children with adult supervision and would be quite educational. I found a project that I could easily complete with shells that I already have an abundance of the first time I looked through it. If you make jewelry to sell, you will be inspired to create true one of a kind pieces. If you don't have an interest in making jewelry, this is a wonderful coffee table book and would be a valuable addition to any public or school library. Highly recommended.
Unique and Full of Ideas.......2004-07-16
I feel guilty for not donating this book to my public library! Cathy Yow has filled this work with beautiful illustrations and fantastic ideas for unique, one of a kind pieces that reflect the abundance of nature. She even includes instructions for making jewelry from ten bean soup mix! Instructions are simple and easy to understand, even for the beginner. Standard jewelry making tools are used for most projects. A drill or dremel is required for many. An absolute treasure to own and a highly valuable book for those who sell their jewelry and want to offer something out of the ordinary.
Jewelry from Nature.......2000-04-22
Cathy gives us "45 great projects using sticks and stones, seeds and bones." The next time you go to eat fried chicken, save the bones! Cathy has a great use for them, as indeed she has for many other natural materials. Here is a partial list:
Corn, Rudraksha seed, Snuffbox bean, Candlenuts, Sea Heart, Green seashells, Bedouin clove, Rose petals, Olive wood, Bamboo, Beetle wing, Tagua nut, Snake vertebrae, Mescal bean, Chinaberry, Beach glass
Just look around your yard (grass, leaves, twigs) or check your spice rack (cloves, nutmeg seeds, bay leaves). Anything is fair game for jewelry making for Cathy.
