5 out of 5 stars WOW .......2006-04-23

This book honestly made me feel like how could yu watase write this book so sad, but then I read the last volume (volume 14) and i said "Now I know why she wrote this book the way she did, and I wish that everyone could read the 14th book and be as happy as I am now". Yu Watase is the best artist and writer that I know.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite volumes.......2005-06-28

I started on Fushigi Yugi originally through the anime, then resorted to the manga three years ago. This has become my longest series and this volume is one of the best I have read. The action has met its climax and the rival priestess has gained her soldiers before Miaka did, making everything more interesting. And the highlight in the manga in my opinion, Nakago's cold kiss with Tamahome. ^.^ Ok so it wasn't exactly what the events were leading to but one of my favorites.

Anyhow, I do like especially to this point how both Yui and Miaka have progressed and to this day, Nakago remains one of my favorite villains. If you are in to FY for the long haul, buy this one as well as the others to follow and complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great volume.......2005-06-17

This is a review of both a volume of Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres. Because Amazon.com links to both series, I will review both volumes.

This is volume twelve of Fushigi Yuugi. It is a wonderful volume. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple. They have a wonderful love story. In this volume, Tamahome hugs Miaka and comforts her after the events from the last book. Miaka and Tamahome are girlfriend and boyfriend and each other's true love. When Miaka and Tamahome learn that now they can become intimate, they must face a decision. A war is coming, and Miaka knows what may be comign ahead. Miaka hugs Tamahome and says that he can make her his bride. Miaka and Tamahome kiss. As they kiss, they have a very romantic and sweet scene. When they are interrupted, they share a sweet moment. Tamahome hugs Miaka and tells her that they will continue this on their wedding night. They have a very sweet scene. When Miaka learns that she and Tamahome may have to separate, Tamahome hugs her and they appear in her world. Tamahome's love for Miaka let them be in her world together. Miaka and Tamahome hug that night. Yui finds out that they are in her world together. Miaka and Tamahome walk into town and Miaka shows her world to Tamahome. Miaka and Tamahome walk happily arm in arm through town and have lots of loving and romantic moments. When Tamahome and Miaka are on a date in a restaurant, Tamahome finds out the truth of how Miaka entered his world and must make a decision. This is a wonderful volume.

In Ceres, Tooya finds out that his memories were implanted into him. Aya returns to herself. It is revealed that Miori is not Tooya's old girlfriend. Tooya tells Aya he's sorry he can't remember their relationship, but he still loves her. He leaves to rediscover himself. Aya transfrers to a new school. Yuuhi is there too. Shiso threatens Aya, telling her he will kill Yuuhi if she doesn't leave him. Aya pretends to be cold to Yuuhi to protect him. Tooya realizes that even if he can't remember Aya he still loves her. Tooya returns to Aya and they reunite and kiss. Tooya asks Aya to elope with him. They move in together. Aya and Tooya have the place alone one night and kiss. They make love and share an intimate night. They go through the days happily. Later, Aya and Tooya go on a journey. Aya is hurt and Tooya awakens her. He greets her in bed and they kiss. They share many times together. Later, they visit an island and Tooya regains his memory and reveals to Aya that they knew each other before. Aya and Tooya go home and Aya kisses Tooya as he looks up their island.

Both stories are great. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple. Soa re Aya and Tooya. Miaka and Tamahome are a wonderful couple. Both stories are great. I have read the entire series of both manga volumes and they are both wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites (A bit of a spoiler, warning).......2005-02-25

Another uniquely Yuu Watase manga.

Ten was another one, like 5, where everything happens at once, but it is a better one to leave off on if you have too.

Poor Aya is alienated, the people in school think she is a slut because of Aki, and to keep Yuhi safe she has to be terribly mean to him. She is really alone with Shurro and Chidori gone. But it isn't all bad Toya realizes, again, it doesn't matter that he doesn't remember Aya a part of his heart does and that is enough. Aya saves Toya by destroying the hypnosis machine that took Toya's memories, so he remebers her. He comes to save her and Alec helps them both to make an escape.

Alec poor thing felt bad about what he did to Toya and couldn't do that to Aya. He is so cute isn't he.

This one at the end is like an action movie. The illustrations are just gorgeous. I am waiting for 11.

4 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2004-11-23

When i first read this book i could not belive what Aki did to Aya in the Libray of the school and Yuhi. The great thing is Toya starts to get his real memories back If you havent owned any of these books i really think that you should get them their really good. :)

Michele Jaffe's first novel, The Stargazer, may have very little to do with astronomy, but its mixture of murder mystery, historical romance, and steamy passion certainly has universal appeal. Our heroine, Bianca Salva, a doctor of the poor and unfortunate, first meets her love interest, Ian Foscari, as she holds a bloody knife over the body of a lovely, if dead, courtesan. Equally suspect and suspicious, they agree to a sham betrothal--Ian knows Bianca is guilty, and gives her one week to offer some explanation. If she fails, he can denounce her, she will be executed, and he will be no worse off. Bianca feels certain she can track down the real killer within the week, and finds Ian's home a convenient place to dissect the body and base her investigation.

Here's where the steamy part comes in to play. Ian, who had been deeply burned by his ex-flame Morgana da Gigio, can't help but feel attracted to his fake fiancée's beauty, but he refuses to acknowledge the pull she exerts on his heart. Bianca is eager to try out the knowledge she has gleaned from her prostitute friends, and Morgana, the beautiful ex, is using her sexual powers to manipulate everyone within reach of her perfume.

As Bianca closes in on the killer, Ian struggles with the battle between his head and his heart. Though their compatibility in bed is undeniable, the two's fragile bond is strained by the increasing dangers--explosions, more murders, seductions, executions, seven giants, and a dwarf flush out the mystery.

While a few historical inaccuracies surface, the overall flow and quick pace, not to mention Jaffe's charming characters and a few choice, steamy sections that should make you blush, make for a fine debut from a fresh new voice . --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Book Description

A fiction debut that shimmers with sensuality and evokes a magical time and place, Michele Jaffe's The Stargazer is one of the most talked-about novels of the year. A warm and witty love story laced with mesmerizing intrigue, an unforgettable adventure set against the dazzling and utterly romantic landscape of Renaissance Venice, this wonderful novel marks the arrival of a splendid new storytelling talent.

Bianca Salva, the brilliant and beautiful daughter of a renowned doctor, defies the conventions of the day by practicing medicine among the poor in her city. When she arrives at the home of a young courtesan, she is shocked to find a tragic scene: the lady has been murdered, stabbed with a dagger bearing the coat of arms of Ian Foscari, a handsome aristocrat renowned throughout Britain and Europe for his courageous escapades and his romantic conquests. Clutching the shining dagger, Bianca looks up to see none other than Ian Foscari himself.

In a heartbeat, the dashing Ian draws the obvious conclusion that he's caught the murderer redhanded. Bianca, meanwhile, mistrusts Ian and presumes he is guilty of the bloody killing. Determined not to let this dangerous albeit alluring woman out of his sight, Ian quickly spirits Bianca back to his palace, where he will announce to society that she is his fiancée -- a plan that conveniently satisfies his family's insistence that he find a wife. And while clever Bianca knows the scheme will allow them time to determine the real murderer, it is nearly unbearable to be held "prisoner" by this imperious, though starkly sensual, man.

But the light of suspicion leaves them nowhere to hide. Now, what began as a necessary arrangement for their quest for the truth becomes its own kind of intriguing partnership -- a heated match of wits with an undeniable, irresistible passion at its core. Stepping carefully among secrets of murder and betrayal, and breathless whispers of desire, Bianca finds herself the linchpin in a conspiracy where love may be her only hope...or the greatest danger of all.

With sureness and sensitivity, talented newcomer Michele Jaffe deftly captures a fascinating historical era...and the ageless desires of the human heart.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Book I've Ever Read.......2006-09-05

This is one of the worst written novels out there. The characters are unbelievably 1 dimensional, the plot is so cliche, and the story is implausible to say the least. I bought it for $2 on clearance and now I know why it was in the clearance bin. Its not even worth the $2 I paid for it. Its an utter waste of time and trees.

1 out of 5 stars Bad writing!.......2006-01-15

I have to agree with the negative reviews of this novel. I love historical fiction and used to live in Venice, so was really excited to receive this as a gift. Sadly, I was disappointed from page 1. The characters were weak, there were too many secondary characters, the plot was predictable, clumsy and slow-paced, and Ian and Bianca's "I love you, I hate you" got old really quickly. I would not recommend this to anyone unless they wanted a cure for insomina.

1 out of 5 stars the stargazer.......2005-08-28

Well I have to agree with the negative reviews of this book. Being a faithful fan to historical romance novels and giving an author a chance, I reserved judgement till the end. This author did everyting possible to make not only the characters unreal but also very unbelieving. I am one of those readers that cant put a book down once stared and even though the beginning gave me a headache which lasted the few hours it took me to finish it, I was so disappointed. The actual time period wasnt revealed till the very end and I think Ian and the Bianca where really ignorant, everything kept repeating itself and the flow of the book was so unreal. I was disappointed till the end, but once I read that this was Jaffer's first novel, I let up on my disappointment. Lucky for me this is the only book by her in the library.

3 out of 5 stars Too much Star-Gazing?.......2001-11-13

Michelle Jaffe's first book, set in Renaissance Venice, introduced me a whole different kind of genre. Because of this book, historical romances are more enjoyable; however, this particular story wasn't all engrossing.

Though the title really doesn't involve any kind of astronomy or stargazing except a little part, it encompasses a different kind of startgazing...

A wealthy jaded man, Ian Foscari, catches Bianca Salva, a scientist of sorts, with a dagger in her hand and a well-known but veyr dead courtesan known by both Bianca and Ian.

Obviously, he assumes Bianca is guilty but takes her as his fiancé to quell the harping of getting married from his brothers as well as to keep his eye on her as they both investigate the murder of the courtesan.

((At this part--you quark your eyebrow at the idea Jaffe is throwing at you. Not all that plausible, but give it a try.))

To prove her innocence, Bianca is given one week to clear herself, and it's an interesting adventure. The characters are both very strong and Bianca is very independent and curious, she's very refreshing, no backing down. She is very innocent, hence her open curiosity, while Ian is jaded by a revengeful former lover.

Lots of adventure, mystery and romance. Jaffe is well educated in Renaissance history and it shows. The story really doesn't seemt o be well put together. It's a little choppy or some parts rushed. It's not as corny or roll your eyes type of romance at least. The two main characters are pretty well developed but everyone else is kind of 2-D or flat.

I wouldn't mind reading it again, at least for awhile that is. If you don't like the story, at least you learned something about history. Ri-ight. I was cut down the line. It was great but it's not so bad you can't read it. You'll just have to read and see for yourself.

2 out of 5 stars Well, I'm not gonna read it again..........2001-10-29

...But it has its good points, too. The plot is very interesting, the characters equally engaging, and the history well researched. The writing, however, leaves something to be desired. I can't quite put my finger on the problem, but there were numerous times when the story felt extremely unreal because of the way it was written. That said, I had no trouble finishing it, which I usually do when books suck. The end is predictable, but the plot never loses interest.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Continuation.......2003-01-29

Book #1 of the Stargazer series was very well done even though it required so much time to be spent on exposition of all the new players and their responsibilities. This is only the second book with Captain Jean Luc Picard in command, yet he is already demonstrating character traits and leadership style that would be familiar to those fans of the TNG television series and films. As many of the more successful stories have done in the past, "Stargazer Book #2 Progenitor", includes two solid story lines that are linked yet distinct, and includes other more minor themes from the first book encompassing the machinations of one Admiral McAteer. A name that will be familiar to many fans is mentioned only in passing, but when the name is Zefram Cochrane many memories and Star Trek History are recalled.

Ensign Jiterica whose species I found so interesting in the first book plays a major role in this second book, which also introduces the now familiar space-time rifts that are explored and endured by so many Trek crews. There are also some crew changes that were made known at the end of book one, and further development within the crew, both as a team and as individuals who make great positive strides. The introductions were handled in book #1, and many personality issues identified as well. In this second book that are largely rectified one way or another.

Captain Picard takes an away team off in support of his chief engineer much in the same way he will support Whorf some 3 decades later. None of the players on this crew are common to the TNG crew, but they are all just as interesting in their diversity, and some resemble the first Enterprise crew in their good-natured bickering. Also, as in the first book politics plays a large role, and like they often are in day to day life they are distasteful.

I used the Microsoft E-Reader for this book although I have used the Adobe Reader as well. Purely from an ease of use, and from an easy on the eyes perspective, both readers are perfectly acceptable. The Microsoft version offers a text reader option which I have not used. I am running these on Windows XP although I don't know that this makes any difference.

5 out of 5 stars Picard on his way up the Starfleet Chain of Command.......2002-07-18

This is a great series and it shows a young Jon Luc before the officers aboard the Enterprise followed him without question. It shows an untested captain and makes for much more interesting stories.. there is a scene in this novel where the characters are surrounded by intergalactic wolves. Greyhorse is another one of those Friedman characters that always surprise the reader.

This series is going to rival that of Peter David's Excalibur series. I just wish they would do more than two a year. At that pace no one is going to get into this series without having to wait a very long time for the next installment.

5 out of 5 stars The lizard race.......2002-05-28

In this second part of the new Stargazer series the Chief Enginner and the Scond Officer Wu are the main focus. Simeon has to return to his world and has to participate in a race with other of his kind. In this race if you win you get to fertilize the eggs and continue your family line.
Simeon has to have some people with him in this race and he picks his Stargazer friends. His family members hav died off and only one remain so this is why he has to pick offworlders.
While this is going on Wu has to rescue a ship and decide if she wants to stay on board or become 1st office of her old ship.
If this was not enough we hav good old politics going on back at Fleet headquarters. This is a continuation from the first book where there is this admiral determine to mess up Jean-Luc.
The story also has some interesting cameos from people such as the Hansens (Seven's relatives), Rachel Garrett and a new crew member someone with the last name of Paris. The series is off to a good start and I can't wait for more.
The only flaws I saw was a printing mistake that merged some stories together without a break between them. I also saw that Picard's first officer referred as human which I believe he is not. But those errors are very minor and not important to the story.

    5 out of 5 stars ST: Stargazer - Progenitor.......2002-05-25

Before the Enterprise, "Q," and the Borg, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's first command was on the U.S.S. Stargazer. This adventure of Star Trek: Stargazer - Progenitor by Michael Jan Friedman is about the continuing adventures of Captain Picard's first command.

This is a character driven adventure mainly focusing on two stories interwoven within the main theme of this book. But there are sub-stories within this tapestry... potential for sabotage, deceit, and intelligence gathering. Also, there is great character interaction and interplay. This is a well crafted story and will keep you interested... galactic heroism and a race for a bloodline survival... hence the title "Progenitor."

The book takes right off where "The Gauntler" left off and builds to two important climaxes as the captain and crew work their respective ways through a maze of twists and turns. All testing the mettle of the characters as self-doubts and second guessing play into the characters thinking. Also, as the characters work through the story, they find their respective talents and strong suits making an interesting story better.

This series called Star Trek: Stargazer has a lot of potential and so far has delivered... both in character crafting with a cohesive narrative along with action and adventure spiced with intrigue. This provides us with a much needed backstory for one of the most interesting of all captains Jean-Luc Picard.

If you are a fan of Jean-Luc Picard this is a good series to get to know him when he was a younger and more free captain. Start with "The Valiant" from the TNG series to get a good foot hold on the series... if you happen to have the "Double Helix #6: The First Virtue" it has background and is worthy of reading for this new series.

Fascinating potential for a new series in the STAR TREK Universe.

4 out of 5 stars Adventures of a young Jean-Luc Picard in 2 Stargazer novels.......2002-05-12

In May 2002, Pocket Books published Michael Jan Friedman's Gauntlet and Progenitor, two novels set in the first year of Jean-Luc Picard's command of the USS Stargazer. It is over 30 years before his adventures as captain of the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation and thus we have a Picard who is still urbane and cultured, but still a relatively unseasoned starship commander.

We meet again Picard's weapons officer, Lieutenant Vigo (introduced in the ST:TNG episode "The Battle"). As well, we are reintroduced to Picard's command staff who served with him for 20 years and more (shades of Kirk and his command staff): Gilaad Ben Zoma, his impulsive first officer; chief medical officer Carter Greyhorse, who is better at dealing with lab equipment than with people; earnest security chief Peter "Pug" Joseph; Idun and Gerda Asmund, twin sisters (humans raised by Klingons) who are the primary helm and navigation officers, respectively; and Phigus Simenon, the curmudgeonly chief engineer and member of the Gnalish species (think Jack Klugman crossed with a velociraptor). These characters were all first introduced 11 years ago in Friedman's novel Reunion and have also appeared in The First Virtue (Friedman's contribution to the "Double Helix" series, co-written with Christie Golden), Requiem and last year's The Valiant.

In Gauntlet, Picard is tasked with stopping the pirate known as the White Wolf. An ambitious admiral has given Picard this choice assignment on the assumption that he will fail and his new captaincy made a lauging stock. The White Wolf turns out to be something totally other than what Picard has expected. In Progenitor, chief engineer Simenon returns to the Gnalish homeworld - accompanied by several Stargazer officers -- to undergo a time-honored ritual that will determine the continuation of his bloodline. A comparison between this plot and the TOS episode "Amok Time" is inevitable, but it's an intriguing take on an old plot.

Among the new characters introduced in these novels are Juanita Valderrama, a middle-aged chief science officer whose complacency in her career leads her to an unwise choice; Joe Caber, scion of a Starfleet family, whose kindness towards some of his fellow officers doesn't offset some nasty personality traits; Martin Paxton, the Stargazer's chief of communications; Elizabeth Wu, a by-the-book second officer who is reminiscent of Commander Shelby from TNG "The Best of Both Worlds"; Jiterica, a young ensign of the low-density humanoid Nizhrak species who wears a containment suit while aboard Stargazer; Obal, a comical-looking Binderian engineer (he resembles a plucked bird and I visualized Daffy Duck on Prozac) who becomes the target of another officer's bigotry; and Dikembe Ulelo, a newly-transferred communications officer with a hidden agenda. Also appearing are relatives of Star Trek: Voyager characters (I won't spoil it for you by telling you who).

I enjoyed both novels. The 70-year "interregnum" between the events of Star Trek: Generations' prologue (set in 2293) and ST:TNG is still largely unexplored territory. Absent a television or movie series set during those years, a book series that fills in some of the gaps is very welcome. Friedman's handling of the gaps in the tapestry of Star Trek history is deft and fun to read. Each novel contains portents of plotlines for future Star Trek: Stargazer novels, which I ancticipate with enthusiasm.

4 out of 5 stars Low Country South Carolina Family History.......2005-05-20

This is a gold mine if you are researching family history connected to the South Carolina Low Country Plantations around Beaufort and Charleston, when the area was teeming with new settlers and commerce. Impeccably researched, with names and dates, of course, as most genealogical tomes are, it lists members of the Hay family back to Scotland's King Robert the Bruce, and the Norse kings, like Thorfinn, the Skullcleaver, Earl of Orkney, 950! It includes details of the (Judge William) Smiths of Haverstraw, New York, and the Colcocks & Hutsons, lawyer and planter families of South Carolina, many now buried at the historic Stony Creek Cemetery near McPhersonville, SC. Charles Jones Colcock's endeavor was quite remarkable when, in 1908, he sent a capable 'agent' to Barbados, Jamaica, and Scotland to find the missing links to write the family story for Susan and Eliza, the beloved Hay women to whom he dedicated the book. It is quite a genealogical book, so be advised, but if your family is here, like my two Hay grandmothers (both named Martha) about whom I long to know more, it is priceless. This edition is a newer one, updated in 1959 by Erroldine Hay Bateman, that includes about 70 pages of family history and photographs of subsequent generations.
