Book Description

When your climbing team is in trouble on the mountain—how to get yourself out of a jam without calling 911. • Self-rescue procedures for teams of two—the most common climbing party size • Techniques equally effective on rock, snow, and ice • Utilizes gear climbers already carry in their rack • Includes 40 one-page rescue scenarios and solutions for analysis The rope is stuck—or too short. A crucial piece of gear is MIA. You've wandered off route into dicey terrain. An injury leaves you or your partner in need of help. Climb long enough and finding yourself in a jam far from help is inevitable. In Climbing: Self Rescue, two longtime climbing instructors and guides teach how to improvise your own solutions, calling for outside help only when necessary.

Because few climbers carry fancy (and expensive) search and rescue gear, all skills taught in this book use the items typically found on a climbing rack: rope, carabiners, slings, and cord. Text, illustrations, and photos explain knots, belaying and hauling systems, rappelling, ascension, passing knots, how to safely assist and rig an injured climber, and more. Roughly half of the book is devoted to real-life climbing scenarios and solutions ranging from moderate to severe. Because real-life situations rarely unfold as they do in practice, Climbing Self-Rescue teaches how to analyze and improvise your way out of a crisis.

ANDY TYSON is a guide for Alpine Ascents, Exum and Antarctic-logistics and Expeditions. MOLLY LOOMIS is an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Alpine Ascents and Prescott College. Tyson is the author of Glacier Mountaineering; Loomis has written for Rock & Ice, Climbing, She Sends, and other publications.

How best to respond when your climbing team gets into difficulty? First, read CLIMBING SELF-RESCUE: IMPROVISING SOLUTIONS FOR SERIOUS SITUATIONS from cover to cover. It holds the keys to using the team's abilities to effect self-rescue, pairing illustrated techniques with insights on using them in all conditions, from rock to snow and ice. Nearly thirty rescue scenarios are outlined with solutions involving as few as two climbers. No other book holds the solution-oriented scenarios of CLIMBING SELF-RESCUE: it should be on the shelves of any serious, regular climber.

5 out of 5 stars Best Self-Rescue Book Money Can Buy.......2006-08-11

I concur with the previous review. Excellent detail and a plethora of photographs to illustrate each point. This book includes a section on ascending out of a glacier crevasse as well. Andy Tyson and Molly Loomis have done a lot of research and work to put this book together to include such detail as a flow chart for you to methodically determine which rescue scenario to persue. Not only do they give qualitative data, but they included quantitative data compiled from various sources to help you understand the strengths of knots and their weaknesses as well. 29 rescue scenarios are explored for your better understanding of rescue techniques. If you have Fasulo's book, this will be a great addition to your rescue book collection. If you are just getting into rock climbing, I strongly advise seeking a mentor and purchasing this book to complement the side of climbing that many people overlook, self-rescue. Practice, practice, practice, then have someone critique your rescue skills.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for trad climbers.......2006-08-04

This is currently the best book on self rescue. Tyson and Loomis provide clear instructions that are understandable to climbers new to leading and detailed enough for long-timers. There's a lot of information, so it can be a bit overwhelming, but you can quickly glean the important stuff. The final chapter offers 29 realistic scenarios with discussion on solutions that provide good food for thought.

Like first aid, even if you think you know all this stuff, it's important to refresh your knowledge. This is the definitive text on self rescue that can literally save you when the s**t hits the fan. Get it. Read it!

4 out of 5 stars Concise, To The Point.......2006-08-31

You'll find all the toipcs in this book in any big reference book on mountaineering. However, adding this book to your library won't do any harm.

The book starts off with a lesson on physical geography. Then, the various techniques on routefinding, team travel and anchors are covered. Unlike many of the bigger books on mountaineering, this book covers the essentials and does not confuse the novice. For instance, the knots and ropework are all pretty simplified. I have tried them out on the field and they all work fine.

My only complaint is that the illustrations look a bit sketchy on some pages.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Glacier Travel.......2000-11-20

Crevasses are one of those things that many of us who climb wish we didn't have to deal with. Unfortunately many people go out and climb while totally unprepared. Indeed they choose to not deal with it, and take enormous risks.

In this book Andy will give you the scoop on everything you ever wanted to know related to glacier travel. He starts by explaining what glaciers are, then he gets more into detail on how to routefind, traveling as a group, and of course how to perform crevasse rescue.

My honest opinion is that this book is not, by itself, going to make you an expert on the subject. I really don't think any book can. You need to get some training, be it with an experienced friend or established school but this book will show you all the techniques that you'll learn. Plus if you already know it can help you brush up and possibly show you new techniques. Great book, very typical high quality stuff from The Mountaineers.

4 out of 5 stars A first-hand teacher.......2000-04-18

As someone who is fairly new to mouutainering and glacier travel, I found the wonderfully helpfulmin explaining important technequies, that are crucial to any body finding their adventures leading them to the mountains. I found it extermly helpful when I actually set foot on the ice.

Book Description

The Neanderthals provide a surprising mirror for modern-day humanity. They belonged to our evolutionary group and lived like the Cro-Magnons, our ancestors, did - worshipping, socializing, and hunting. The struggle between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons lasted thousands of years. The Cro-Magnons were not biologically fit for extreme cold weather, but their ingenuity allowed them to settle down, band together, and survive. In this tale of life, death, and the awakening of human awareness, Juan Luis Arsuaga, Spain's most celebrated paleoanthropologist, depicts the dramatic struggle between two clashing species, of which only one survives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-05-11

Arsuaga focuses on discoveries in his native Spain, and they are many. His hypothesis is that Neanderthals had the brains to be as intelligent as we, but lacked the physical equipment to develop sophisticated language.

The author ranges afield into areas of natural history and biology that give the book a depth beyond its title. I'm reminded, in a very small way, of course, of The Golden Bough, which set out to explore one cultural artifact and wound up as an encyclopedia of cultural anthropology.

I like Arsuaga's informal style and his fair-minded exposition of points of view that differ from his own. While the book is not a page-turner for the average reader, it is so for anyone seriously interested in its subject.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting topic, poorly organized book........2004-09-20

I was disappointed by this book. It reads like the transcript of a university lecture given by a bright and enthusiastic professor. That said, the author's frequent asides and digressions make it difficult to follow his narrative.

5 out of 5 stars It is about who the first thinkers were..........2004-01-13

The book is very detailed and very interesting, but while it has lots of information about Neanderthals, and they are an important part of the book, much of it IS about the subtitle, In Search of the First Thinkers. When did we go from gestures to language? When did we stop making the same stone tool, again and again, and start making different tools for different needs? When did we stop thinking about how to hunt down an animal which was right in front of us and start planning out how to get food in the future? The author uses Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons to ask 'Why did one win over the other?' Was it language? What does art have to do with it? Maybe it had to do with the development of better tools? And what do bigger brains have to do with it if Neanderthals had the biggest ones?
It is as much history as it is philosophy.

1 out of 5 stars The Neanderthal's Necklace.......2003-09-26

I most definitely do not recommend this book if the reader wishes to learn something about the Neanderthals. Actually, there is virtually nothing in the book about the Neanderthals and their culture, but there is a lot of information on the late Pleistocene environments of the Iberian Peninsula. This book is mostly natural history, not archaeology. I do not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars review.......2003-09-02

Great. It goes through all the steps of human development "from ape to man". Very easy to understand for non experts. The Neanderthal chapter is the most interesting one. I recommend it to people who are not experts on the issue but love the topic and want to keep themselves on the loop.

4 out of 5 stars Where are those bugs?.......2004-11-06

Little boys love bugs and this is the book to help them identify those creatures they come in contact with on a daily basis! Learn the name of any bug you can imagine.

To first understand the book you will find page two most helpful. This explains how the pages are set up. This is a puzzle book and many of the bugs are hidden in the pictures among the background of their surroundings in their daily life.

When you open up the following pages there is a picture laid out in the two pages in the middle. The top, bottom and side borders have pictures with descriptions and facts on all the bugs. Some of the pages are horizontal and others are vertical.

For each picture you will find approximately one hundred bugs. It is important to teach the youngster that you would not normally find that amount in the same spot. The Big Bug Search is an asset for the child who is learning to count, what a fun way to learn your numbers than by counting bugs! This is also similar to the types of homework we receive from the Kindergarten classroom with the searching for items that are hidden and hard to find.

This search book series will provide countless hours of exploring, learning, counting and memorizing of every name listed in here for my son. I feel he will be having fun this summer as well as experimenting with the outside world of bugs, beetles and the like from the knowledge taken from The Big Bug Search .

By looking through the pages with the pictures he has learned where to find certain spiders, what color trees some bugs like to hang out while others like the water scenery best.

For the child who is a beginning reader this will be more of an interactive book with an Adult to read and help with the search of where each bug is lurking. With a magnifying glass a child can explore further. With this being a large paperback book you can use a pen or pencil to circle those that are of interest and answer the questions. My son likes to use a highlighter or marker to note his favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Read Again and Again.......2002-04-19

My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book. The pictures are so detailed, he can alwasy discover something new. When he first read it, we looked for butterflies on each page. Now, he enjoys looking for snails. The text and illustrations make it suitable for much older children, so I know he will continue to enjoy it for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated by Ian Jackson.......2001-07-06

EDC Publishing offers three outstanding Usborne "picture puzzle" titles beautifully illustrated by Ian Jackson for children with an interest in nature and wildlife that are as fun and they are informative. In The Great Animal Search (0746017391, ...) there are some 100 animals to spot and identify on every double-page of this oversized book. Each scenario showcases a different part of the world and the wildlife that lives there. In addition to countless hours of puzzle solving fun, there is a wealth of fascinating animal facts presented in succinct, easy-to-read captions. The Big Bug Search (0746027036, ...) follows the same format, only this time for insects ranging from hairy spiders and black slugs to dragonflies and leafcutter ants. With The Great Undersea Search (0746023413, ...) the focus in on live under water in the various puzzle pictures ranging from coral reef to ocean depths to sunken pirate ship, and more. With all three books, should young readers (or their parents!) get stuck trying to find all the hidden things, their are answers in the back. This wonderfully presented, magnificently illustrated series is especially recommended for home schooling curriculums, rainy day pastimes, or long road trip diversions.

Amy fell for Andy last summer and was shocked to learn that he, too, was a clone. When Andy disappeared, Amy didn't know what to believe about him. Now she spots him at a café. Or thinks she does. . . . Is Andy really in Paris? Is it the same Andy? Is it one of his supposed clones? One thing's for sure: If Andy's around, danger isn't far behind. Amy couldn't trust Andy a year ago, but all she knows now is that she has to find him no matter what!

    5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2002-11-12

I really like this book, although Annie Perrault is in it more than Andy, which only made me likeit better (i'm not into romance yet)also it introduces the idea that the organization is not their only enemy. made me wish i spoke french too!!!

4 out of 5 stars Andy is back.......2001-12-08

I really liked this book. One reason is that Andy is in it and so is Annie Perault (I think that is how you spell it). It was not expected or anything. Monica is brought into the series as well. Why I didn't give it a five star is because the plot got weak after a while. I mean neo-nazis in Paris, and that freakish tourguide. A little farfectched, but still a delighful book.

3 out of 5 stars I EXPECTED IT TO BE A LOT BETTER.......2001-07-24

I didn't particularly care for this book. I mean, the whole deal with the neo-Nazis got pretty boring after a while. I knew what side both Annie and Andy were on from the beginning. It was predictable, and it didn't catch my attention that well. I liked the beginning, and the end, but other than that, this book was not that good. I really thought Kaye would do something better.

5 out of 5 stars Andy is back when he was least expected........2001-06-19

Amy goes to Paris, the city of lights. She loves it there and she spots Andy. She also spots another clone of hers,Annie. She soon uncovers a secret which is more dangerous than she ever imagined. If you choose to read one book out of the whole series, this is it.It has got to be made into a movie, too.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, another Andy book!.......2001-01-18

Finally, we meet Andy again! But this time it's in Paris, France! Amy finds out more about Andy, and what happened at Wilderness Adventure camp. Amy even meets another Amy: The ballerina! But will that Amy be nice, like Amy Number Seven, or will she be like Jeanine??? Find out in this book!

When pilots undertake a hazardous operation, they have an "escort" with them--fighter planes that go faster and higher and stand ready to swoop down and rescue any downed aircrew. This began in WWII, with the Luftwaffe, and has now become standard operating procedure. In thrilling detail, see how these rescuers accomplish their missions--in WWII, in Vietnam, in the Falklands, the Gulf War, and more.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Adds nothing to the subject matter........2002-07-24

This book is nothing but a series of third version accounts based on other people's work. Almost no footnotes and many factual errors.

1 out of 5 stars Highly inaccurate and very poorly written.......2000-03-31

This book is highly inaccurate and very poorly written. For example, the author's portrayal of the O'Grady Rescue is full of factual errors regarding mission execution and it contains numerous misrepresentations of individual roles during the mission. One glaring misrepresentation can be found on pages 153 through 158, where the author names Captain Ian "Blondie" Walsh as "the lead Cobra pilot in the rescue mission for USAF pilot Scott O'Grady". This is completely false. Captain Walsh was only the co-pilot in the lead Cobra; the lead Cobra was commanded by another Marine Aviator, who was also the Escort Flight Leader for the entire rescue force. (Hopefully this misrepresentation was the result of an oversight, and not a deliberate attempt to give Captain Walsh the credit for another Marine's leadership and actions in combat.) The author also plays it "loose" with other facts relating to the mission, which severely undermines his attempt to present this work as a realistic portrayal of actual events. How do I know this? I know all of this because one of my closest friends was a member of the 24th MEU(SOC) TRAP Team that rescued Captain O'Grady from Bosnia, and I know what the facts are. I would not recommend that anyone even read this book, let alone buy it. It would be a complete waste of time and money. Other, more accurate sources of information regarding CSAR and TRAP operations can be found at any library. "Combat Search and Rescue" clearly deserves the lowest reviewer rating.

    1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2000-02-25

This book offers an interesting history of combat search and rescue from WWII to the Gulf War; however, it is loaded with inaccuracies - in many places, the author doesn't even have the pictures of the various USAF helicopter's correctly identified! Don't waste your money on the hardback, get it in paperback or from the library.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......1999-09-09

The book is something all parties interested in SAR and CSAR should read. These men are the true heroes of any military operation.

    .

This would have to be one of the best kid's books around. My 5 year-old just loves hunting for all the hidden critters and counting them off. Sometimes all you see is a tail, or an ear, or a familiar silhouette far off on the horizon.

There is no better way to get children developing a sense of the different environments around the globe and the animals that live in all the different habitats: from the arctic to the equatorial rainforests and from the mountains to the deserts; under the water and by the seaside.

We have only one criticism with this book. It was my budding, junior-zoologist that spotted it. Mr Ibex in not in the comprehensive index although there are ten ibices (?) to be seen on page 26. With 300 different kinds of animals in this book, we have to give it a score of 299 out of 300, that is, almost perfect!

5 out of 5 stars 100 animals to spot and identify on every double-page.......2001-07-06

In The Great Animal Search there are some 100 animals to spot and identify on every double-page of this oversized book. Each scenario showcases a different part of the world and the wildlife that lives there. In addition to countless hours of puzzle solving fun, there is a wealth of fascinating animal facts presented in succinct, easy-to-read captions.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2001-03-29

These books are great! The entire concept of the hidden picture gets the kids really thinking. The adventure of learning that follows each picture just amazes me. The Where's Waldo books did not appeal to our family. We love the " I spy " books and those pictures are magnificent! These books however, the pictures do captivate you but there is a learning process with each picture. My children are 10, 8, and 5 and I notice the difference in what each one asks from these pictures. I think this series is wonderful because it does combine the puzzle concept with so much else. The Great Animal Search is my 5-year-old son's favorite!
