Indiana Jones move aside.......2007-09-08
One of the best books I ever read. Great insights! A book one can always return to and learn from. I highly recommend this and Villoldo's other books.
Now one of my favorite books.......2007-07-05
I absolutely loved reading this story, and haven't read any story as stimulating since The Celestine Prophesy.... the difference, of course being - that this book recounts true life experiences. This was an engaging, enjoyable read with many eye opening insights into other ways and worlds. I have vivid memories of the images and experiences described in this book. Fascinating!
good book good seler.......2006-06-29
a great and by-now classic book on the theme of shamanism by an anthopologist and psychologist. I LIKE THIS BOOK BECAUSE HE TRIES IN IT TO DECRIBE HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCES IN COMMON WORDS
Reality or fiction?.......2005-05-04
For those seeking more info about Dr. Villoldo's lack of detail and other concerns regarding truthfulness in contemporary shamanism, please see "The Selling of the Shaman and the Problem of Informant Legitimacy" which appears in the Summer 1990 issue of 'Anthropological Research', Volume 46, Number 2. Dr. Villoldo is prominently featured.
reads well.......2002-12-19
In this book Villoldo, perhaps one of the most well known teachers of Inca shamanism in the West, describes his initial encounters with the shamanic world. The book is devoted to Villoldo's experiences with two Peruvian healers - don Ramon Silva (an ayahuascero from the Peruvian Amazon) and don Antonio Morales, (a Qero style healer and philosophy professor!). Villoldo's recounting of Peruvian healing practices is gripping and the final chapter, in which he describes the death of his teacher's teacher in a little cottage on the Peruvian altiplano, is simply breath-taking. I also quite liked the description of the "operation" which allowed V. to see energy patterns and his animal allies.
If V. only recounted his experiences with the old shamans, the book would have been superb. Unfortunately, he decided to insert into the book his own personal issues and musings on the nature of reality (which tend to go on and on) and which to me seem to be rather cliche-y. this guy is a doer, not a thinker and all the theory just detracted me from the magic of his experiences. V. also seems to be unduly impressed by his newly acquired Ph.D. in psychology (from a little known local college) as if a degree means anything these days.
Still, I find Villoldo's accounts to be trustworthy and in my opinion this book is a useful read for people interested in Peruvian healing practices and in energy work in general.

Got it quickly and at a good price.
Great series........2007-03-21
My daughter loves all the Droon series books. In the third grade she had some trouble reading these books. But now, in the fourth grade, she goes through a book a week! Droon is a land of magic, adventure, and mystery. I would recommend you start from number 1 in the series and continue from there. These books are not just for younger readers. I also find them fun and interesting to read, and I'm... not going to say how old I am.
This Book Is Awesome.......2006-01-23
I liked this book because there is a lot people looking for Max and they all help in a different way. Like how Khan uses his nose to smell danger and evil. I also like this book because when Eric, Neal and Julie played soccer it was so cool because they talked to themselves in their mind's. And it was also cool when Galen whent to the under world of Goll. And the best part was when the ninns stole a giant hammer.

A CONTINENT AND A WAR LIE BETWEEN HER AND THE ONLY PLACE OF SAFETY SHE KNOWS!
Uncover THE SECRETS OF HEATHERSLEIGH HALL with Wayward Winds, the newest book from Michael Phillips and join the drama, the conflict, and the attempt of one woman to free herself from the clutches of a man yearning for power.
In Wayward Winds, Amanda Rutherford has left the family mansion on the shires of Devon and joined the suffragette movement in London. While in the bustling metropolis, she becomes romantically involved with Ramsay Halifax, a charming young man who has European roots. As World War I approaches, the suffragette movement wanes, leaving Amanda without much purpose.
In a hasty decision, she agrees to marry Halifax, and soon she is on her way to Eastern Europe. Little does she know the danger she is in, that all along she has been merely a pawn in an ideological scheme to gain influence and control in England. When she finally realizes that Halifax and his mother are not the people she thought they were, she finds herself far from home and a warring continent lays between her and the only place of safety she knows.

Customer Reviews:
this author an awesome discovery!.......2003-02-16
In two weeks I have read books 2,3 & 4 of the Heathersleigh series. I am purchasing #1 to read. I got so involved in the characters of the series. The thing which impressed me was that, in the process of reading them, I began to be aware of people in my life - and myself - who suffered the same spiritual afflictions as the Rutherfords and their friends; and more painfully so, was brought to a point of reassessing myself and my motives in life. I would think "how could amanda be like that" and a gentle nudging of the spirit would remind me that I, too, have allowed such pettiness in my life.. Not only entertaining and full of historial and geographical knowledge, but full of spiritual awakening.
Excellent Book!.......2000-07-11
Out of all of Michael Phillips' books, this one is my favorite! I haven't been able to put it down because it is so fasinating and captivating! If you want an excellently written book that has explicit research, this book is for you. The characters are interesting and very real, whether it is Catharine and George exploring Heathersleigh Hall, the McFees visiting, or Amanda with her seemingly endless problems. I studied World War I in school this year and all the events that happened previously are in this book, which makes the book very interesting for me as well. There is nothing in this book I did not like! Read it yourself!
Extremely Gripping!.......2000-02-11
This book is one of the most exciting and gripping books I've ever read! Amanda and her family are very real characters in very real situations. Michael Phillips has done a fantastic job with this series. I can't wait to read the next one! If you haven't read this series, I really recommend it. It will change you and your outlook on life. It has real characters, real plots, and a history lesson too!
Great series about walking with God.......2000-02-05
I appreciate how much detail about the way characters think Phillips includes in the Heathersleigh series. I've realized many things about God through my reading of these novels, and that's a rare gift.
However, sometimes the message can obscure the plot and the action bogs down in a mire of feelings, questions, thoughts and sermons. So this book isn't just light reading -- some parts made me think. You can only really understand the point of all the action if you understand the growth the Rutherfords are going through, and that understanding will vary from person to person.
I can't wait to read the final two books in this series.
once you pick it up you can't put it down.......1999-09-06
this book is rich in historical value and vivid characters. After the first book, this came as a refreshing surprise. It definately shows you the inside scoop of World War One and how the Fountain of Light persuaded and blinded its many followers.

Good read!.......2007-05-03
I really liked this book. It only took me about 5 days to read it (and that was with my time being limited by life being busy!!) I liked how it started, it caught my attention. I liked the end too, a little surprising. I thought the characters were realistic and interesting. I love this time period too, historical fiction is always fun! I think the book was easy to read and very enjoyable. If you like this book you would probably also like Treasures of the North by Tracie Peterson (also about the gold rush - but only in Canada).
Starts with a bang, ends with a fizzle..........2006-10-07
Laina Gray is an ex-showboat singer sold into slavery by her unscrupulous father. Rescued by army officer Nathan Boone, she discovers a new life at the fort under the watchful eye of faithful Christian Granny Max. Will Laina escape her past or is it doomed to haunt her?
I enjoyed the first half of secrets of the wind. Laina is a truly likeable character and so is Granny max. Granny Max is the soul of the book, and so is Laina, and any scene with those two in it was heartwarming...
However, the preaching became quite heavy in the second half of the book, almost to the point where it was unenjoyable for this reader. I can handle it when it seems natural, but in many cases it seemed forced. Long discussions of characters faith or (lack therof) do not particularly excite me.
I also felt the author's depiction of male characters was pretty bland. Neither of the male characters (Beau or Nate) were particularly thrilling. Nate was a bit of a mary sue and Beau seemed like a loser to me. I found the romance between Laina and her chosen beau to be quite tepid. It seemed almost as though the last few chapters the author remembered it was a romance and tacked it on. The issue of rape recovery, childbirth, loss, and death are not particularly romantic subjects and these issues are being dealt with during the heroine's very brief 'courtship,' was a bit of a downer. I'd like to see Laina get a romance, but so soon after her ordeal didn't work out for me somehow.
3 stars. A little too much preaching and unappealing male characters, sloppy romance.
Great Fast Read.......2005-10-17
This is the first Christian "romance" book I have ever read, and was pleased that the Word of God was shared repeatedly throughout the book (KUDOS Stephanie) without sounding "preachy" or forced. A+ and how 'bout the hot girl on the cover!
Obviously an opening series winner!.......2004-09-14
Stephanie Grace Whitson has done it again with this one! Indians play a part, the Army an even larger part-- as well as various and sundry "orphans and abused victims" all of which sway the reader one way or the other.
She portrays Laina in a positive light in spite of her infamous and horrible past. Boone is a leader in the Army who just cannot move on past the death of his wife 2 years earlier. The reader gets geared for a relationship that keeps you guessing, wondering and finally letting out a big sigh of surprise. Everyone's hero is Granny Max, her faith, healing touch and counsel and patience never waver. Tears will spill over Granny in this book, trust me.
Another "little lamb" who is running is Jackson, a young soldier with a past. He has a temper and some habits that make you want to alternately shake him and hug him. Good job, Stephanie!
When Laina feels she has done it all, borne it all and is finally is on her way to recovery from her dugout ordeal and her earlier past, she finds out she is NOT disconnected yet, and will be asked to bear the ultimate humiliation. Can she-- in this small, close-knit community? She has a plan. Is it God's plan, though?
Whitson definitely has another winning series and I am out the door to purchase book number 2, thanks again Steph, for your courage and determination to keep love, history, Indians and Christ all woven throughout this book and most likely the rest of the series if I know you!
Depressing.......2004-04-16
I personally found this book very depressing. One thing after another happened to Laina and the ending left me dissatisfied. I struggled to finish it and was disappointed when I did. This is one book I wish I had passed over.
Laina is found by an army officer in deplorable conditions. She's locked in a cellar where she is repeatedly raped by a horrible man. They bring Laina in to the fort and leave her with a woman, hoping that she'll be able to get through the trauma's she's been through.

Civil War Romance Charlie is a crack sharpshooter for the Twenty-Fifth Virginia infantry. But Charlie has secrets.big secrets that could lead to heartbreak or even death. How could they possibly know that their paths would cross during the worst time in their lives and where that path would lead?
Customer Reviews:
The Civil War like You've Never Read it Before.......2007-04-23
Charlotte "Charlie" Garret is a woman torn, not only by the Civil War, which already tears North from South, but also by her husband's involvement. Determined to stand by his side, she does the unthinkable and joins the Confederate Army disguised as a young man. Simply being close to her husband, Joshua, even in the rough circumstances the soldiers engage in, gives her heart some peace. When her talents as a sharpshooter are honed, she earns herself a true place in the Twenty-Fifth Virginia infantry. Soon, despite having made friends amongst her fellow soldiers, Charlie finds herself more alone than she could possibly have imagined. When a new opportunity comes along to help those of the South in need, she finds a new purpose in her life, a true calling.
Captain Daniel Reid is a dedicated surgeon for the Confederacy, while born and raised in the North. Firmly believing in his duty to save lives, the war nonetheless takes its toll. No matter how hard or long he toils, there will always be more soldiers that need help. When the worst possible thing happens for a man in his position, he will take on a desperate mission for the South that soldiers often do not return from. And when he meets little Charlie Garret, he discovers a secret that carries his spirit on through the tormenting next few years.
Secrets and Sacrifices brings not only the horrors of the most infamous U.S. war to light in a passionate and moving way, it brings forth a basic human ideal as well--that in time, we will survive and live to love again one day. Thanks to meeting one another amidst terrible strife, Charlie and Daniel give each other the hope that roots this ideal. Charlie is a woman that endures through action and compassion. Not one to sit idle, she takes on a dangerous mission not once, but twice throughout the war, bringing freedom to many. Daniel is the consummate soldier, dedicated to his beliefs and they serve him well as he takes it upon himself to gain much needed supplies for his men. Ultimately, Charlie and Daniel's goals are to reunite, and it's a rare, passionate love that they experience at intervals throughout the book. Author Wylie does a superb job of drawing on the emotions and engaging the reader through action and a well-drawn plot through history. Well done!
Enthralling American Civil War Romance.......2007-04-22
Some stories come across as contrived, especially ones that have women disguising themselves as a male soldier, sailor, and so on. Not so Secret and Sacrifices. Right from the beginning Diane Wylie's writing has you believing Charlie's (Charlotte) motivation for enlisting into the army as well as her ability to continue the charade by her physical build, intelligence, and also being assigned as a sharpshooter. Even after her husband's death, the motivation to remain in the army is clear.
I liked how Ms Wylie handled Charlie's discovery at being a woman. It's then we get to the romance between Charlotte and Daniel set amidst the war, and the gripping story that unfolds. The romance slowly deepens as we see Charlotte and Daniel struggle to do what is right. Charlotte follows her conscience about slavery and slaves. Daniel, as a surgeon, follows his conscience even as he puts himself in danger getting supplies for the neediest wounded.
The realities of war are not skipped over nor glorified in Secrets and Sacrifices, which I appreciated. The hunger, want and degradation of body and spirit is finely expressed, as well as the stupidity of both sides during that horrible war. Love, romance and honor aren't neglected either. I highly recommend Secrets and Sacrifices. Seek out her earlier novel, My Enemy, My Love, if you can.
Amazing book.......2007-03-29
What an amazing book: amazing story, amazing characters, amazing research.
"Charlie" disguised herself as a boy so that she could go to war with her husband Joshua. She doesn't just follow him, but because of her skill with a rifle she becomes a sniper, a job she did even though she dreaded killing another living being. She loves her husband dearly and passionately, and her grief when he's killed in battle is overwhelming.
In her guise as a boy, she is spotted by the regimental surgeon, Daniel. He discovers that she's a woman later when he rescues her from rape. Their attraction to each other is not a simple matter. Charlie is still grief stricken by her husband's death, and Daniel knows and respects that. Everything that brings them together in the context of the Civil War makes them closer emotionally and physically.
Ms. Wylie's descriptions of every aspect of war are beautifully written, horrifyingly chilling, and heart wrenching. Charlie's grief is so poignantly real that you can't help but cry with her. Battle scenes are, to this reader, unbelievably terrifying. Ms. Wylie tells of the fear and the courage of the soldier and the agony of the uncertainty of your next meal, the next time you'll be able to sleep, or whether you'll be alive in the next minute to do either.
Daniel's exhaustion from hours and days straight of operating on the wounded is exhausting in itself to read. Her research into medical procedures of this time in history, the geography and tactics of the battlefields, into the clothing of the period, are all spot on. Ms. Wylie knows her subject well.
Daniel and Charlie's awareness of each other and their feelings grow very naturally out of their experiences together. They live for a bit of sweetness and light amongst the horror surrounding them. The tale takes them both - together and separately - through adventures showing their courage and commitment to their own soldiers, as well as the whole of humanity. They never give up and are rewarded with the gift of their love. Charlie never forgets her first love Josh, but discovers another one in Daniel.
Secrets and Sacrifices delivers a brilliant battlefield epic and a wonderful human love story at the same time, both equal in their power and emotion. If you like to lose yourself in your reading, like I do, this is the book for that.
Powerful Civil War Romance.......2007-01-29
Newlywed Charlotte (Charlie) Garrett cuts her hair, binds her breasts, and follows her husband Josh into the Confederate Army, but becoming a sharp shooter can't protect her or Josh from the horrors of war.
Captain Daniel Reid, handsome surgeon for Virginia's Twenty-Fifth Infantry, struggles to keep his mind from becoming one more casualty in the brutal conflict.
As the war grinds on and the deprivations increase, will Charlie and Daniel find the courage to overcome their grief, join forces, and do more than just survive?
Diane M. Wylie writes a well-researched story intimately portraying love, loss, and redemption in one of our nation's darkest hours.
Reality, Romance and Recommended Read .......2006-12-03
I'm sure Ms. Wylie lived another life during the Civil War Era, and that's the reason she could write such a realistic and captivating story about that era. If you enjoy historicals written by an author who did their homework, then you'll love Secret's and Sacrifices. Join Charlotte as she becomes Charlie, enlists in the army to be close to her husband, and lives through terror that would make other women faint. Kudos to the author!

A Good Read (Minor Spoilers).......2006-04-25
Sylvie Montague is a gemologist called to Scotland to help the police catalogue the jewelry stash of a murdered drug runner. After arriving in Scotland, and after making dinner plans with a Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Handsome from the plane, Sylvie finds that her carry-on bag has been switched. The bag in her possession contains a mysterious stolen Romanian diamond called Katerina's Blood, a diamond that apparently belonged to the murdered drug runner.
Sylvie finds a smeared address but legible phone number on the luggage tag on the errant bag and calls the number. The voice on the answering machine that picks up is that of an old friend and former love, Paul Maigny. Paul is a collecter and has wanted this particular hunk of compressed carbon for a long time. Sylvie is really confused.
But since Sylvie has a hot date, she tucks the 80 carat rock into her bra and off she goes. Mr. TDaH turns out to be the jewel thief himself, Luca Colceriu. Luca tells Sylvie that Paul hired him to steal the diamond, but he doesn't intend to give it to Paul. Luca is Romanian, and he wants to return the diamond to his country "for his family's honor." He (Luca) is afraid to touch the diamond because legend has it that the diamond is cursed. Since Sylvie doesn't believe in curses (he knows this how?), he wants her to help him return it to Romania. I guess he can't wear gloves and buy a plane ticket.
Sylvie is intrigued and attracted. However, other people want the diamond as well, and soon Sylvie and Luca are chased across the Scottish landscape from town to town. After some slightly kinky foreplay, Luca takes off with the diamond. Sylvie turns to Paul, and eventually the entire plot is revealed.
I like the fast-paced action in this. The story occurs over only a few days, and a lot of car chases, bullets, back-stabbing and double-crossing are tucked into those minimal hours. I also liked the unconventional romance. Sylvie is attracted to two men--Luca and Paul. While Luca is close to Sylvie's age, Paul is much older than Sylvie--perhaps twenty five years or more. He is a friend of her father's and has known her since she was a child. He stepped in to care for her when her father couldn't (drinking, race car driving, poor choice of dwellings, etc.). Sylvie has been in love with him since she was a child. This story line could have gone way, way wrong, but I thought that the author handled the May-December romance skillfully and kept if from becoming creepy and pedophilic (is that a word?)
The problem with the book I have is with the contrived set up. Luca steals the diamond from the drug runner in Scotland. Rather than simply absconding to Romania via the first flight, he sits around enjoying the local scenery until he reads in the paper that Sylvie will be called in to evaluate the remaining jewelry. He then flies all the way to San Francisco, breaks into her apartment to see what type of luggage she has, and gets on the same flight as Sylvie from San Fran to Scotland so he can switch bags with her. He tells her that he has done this because Paul won't try to come after Luca while Sylvie is with him. Luca believes that Paul still has feelings for Sylvie and that Paul would not put her in harm's way.
This is just plain silly. First, Luca could have been back in the land of Dracula and reasonably safe from Paul within hours of the heist. Europe just isn't that big. Hooking up with Sylvie cost him days, and Sylvie wasn't going to stay with him and protect him from Paul forever. Second, when Luca realizes that Sylvie won't help him, he ties her up, takes the diamond from her, and...absconds back to Romania via the first flight. He also tells her that he doesn't really believe in curses. So why did he go to all the trouble of getting her involved again?
Other than that the book is enjoyable, and I do recommend it.
Not bad..........2006-03-23
Sylvie Montague is in Scotland to catalogue the gems from the estate of a recently deceased drug dealer. Unfortunately for her, her bag is switched with that of a jewel thief, Luca Colceria, and Sylvie discovers she is now in possession of the famed Katerina's Blood. Katerina's Blood is a cursed jewel and Luca is scared to possess it for fear the curse will befall him. Luca informs Sylvie that he was paid to steal the gem by Paul Maigny, Sylvie's childhood love and savior, but Luca now wants to return it to its home country of Romania. Sylvie is torn between the two men, both wanting to possess the gem, while she only wants to turn the gem over to law enforcement. This book is packed with non-stop action although I found the overabundance of car chases somewhat distracting.
strong character driven thriller .......2006-03-17
San Francisco based Gemologist Sylvie Montague journeys to Glasgow, Scotland to evaluate jewels recovered from a dead drug dealer. However, instead of her bag she took with her, she finds she is carrying an identical looking luggage, which also contains a famous diamond that her former spouse Paul Maigny has always desired. She immediately goes all alert because she assumes Paul pulled a switch and whenever she is involved with him trouble follows.
Sylvie proves right as gangsters chase her wanting the gem she found in the luggage. She quickly decides that her only way out of this mess is to trust no one including the man she always loved or the cops who hired her as a consultant and to return the diamond to its rightful owner. However, the path includes thugs willing to kill Sylvie to take the gem from her.
THE DIAMOND SECRET is fast-paced and action-packed from the moment that Sylvie flies to Scotland and never slows down as the heroine quickly realizes trust no one as "nothing can bring out the evils of man like the lust to possess a particular jewel". She learns that first hand as even the man she loves seems to have betrayed her for a coveted gem. Fans who appreciate a strong character driven thriller will want to read Ruth Wind's terrific suspense filled tale.

Book Description
This book focuses on the two works in the subtitle as well as on unpublished manuscripts and notebooks in the Yeats collection of the National Library of Ireland. The author argues that by the end of the 1890s Yeats had developed a coherent symbolic system based on his work with Irish folklore and mythology and that this system is most clearly delineated in the first editions of the work and in Yeats's unpublished papers. The book begins with a study of Yeats's Irish and Celtic sources, then moves on to outline the symbolic theory, drawing heavily on Yeats's notebooks. The theory is then applied in a critical study of the poems, prose, and plays of the last half of the 1890s.

This book is awesome!!!!.......2003-11-13
Books don't get much better than this one. It is a true literary classic, that I highly recommend to anyone even the least bit curious about Yates. It is, without a doubt, simply the best book I've ever read....not only that, it's probably the best book ever published. Perhaps, the best collection of words on paper in the entire history of mankind. This book will make you think! It's epic proportion is matched only by perhaps The Schastic Scriptures. The authour's genius is clearly present from the very first sentence! Amazon only lets me give this thing five stars....I really think it deserves 5 million! Buy it! Buy It Now! Buy one for you Mom, your Dad, your brother, your sister, your son, your daughter, your boss, your teacher, your cousin, your aunt, your uncle, your bus driver, your coffee shop espresso server, your gas station attendant, your accountant, your lawyer, your ex-wife, your president. Hell, even get a copy for your dog and cat!! You can't get enough of this book!
