Extreme Fat Smash Diet book and program.......2007-10-01
I saw this book's author on the Tyra Bank's Show (and Celebrity Fit Club on VH1) and thought, why not give it a try. I am only looking to lose about 15 lbs. and NOTHING else has seemed to work. I tend to plateau after about a month. Well, I read the book, which was very clear and simply laid out. I lost 8 lbs. in two weeks. This plan involves a LOT of exercise, so if you don't like to sweat, I don't recommend this book or program.
I don't feel hungry or exhausted. I feel energized and very secure in how I look. It is amazing what a difference 8 little pounds can make. Cannot wait to finish and experience how well the "Maintenance Phase" works out.
Nothing else has worked, this diet is excellent!.......2007-09-21
When I first read the diet, I was skeptical. It seemed that there was not enough food and I would be hungry, but I gave it a try. The first day was a little hard, the second day a little easier, by the third day I couldn't beleieve it, I wasn't hungry anymore! I am currently on day 5 and have lost 6 pounds. I am a middle aged woman with 3 children and have tried every other diet (which cost me a lot of money) This is the cheapest, easiest, fastest and most effective diet I have ever been on. This book has been a blessing and I would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent knowledgeable book.......2007-09-21
I am very skeptical person, and it's really hard to please me regarding anything. Prior purchasing this book I have spent many hours doing my research on healthy life stile, including food receipts, exercises, good and bad habits everyone develops during life time, etc. Also, before buying this book I went to B & N, took the whole bunch of books in my lap, and carefully went throughout each and every one. Smash Extreme Fat Smash Diet by Dr. Ian was my only choice considering the price range, quality of the information, duration of the program, etc. What a wonderful investment I made that day.
I am not sure of 12 Lb in 3 weeks (since I only need to drop few pounds of fat; therefore, I am not measuring myself each day or each week after the program) but the whole program works for me. I SEE and FEEL the difference. I am loosing fat each day, feeling healthier, learning about new receipts, new life style I am trying to accustom, and keep recommending this book to all my friends and family members. Thanks to Dr. Ian.
Save your money.......2007-09-15
I saw Ian Smith on TV and told myself I have to get that book. Next time I'll save my money and just buy a cook book and note pad from the 99 cent store.
Smash, smashes into the ground.......2007-09-13
What a piece of garbage. This diet is billed as "eating what you want just in moderate portions". That comes after the diet of tree bark and dirt. It is very repetitive. I imagine that this guy couldn't keep his own diet. It is ridiculous. For a modest weight loss? You really need to hate yourself to keep this diet.

Book Description
There's one last chance to save the world in MAXIMUM RIDE: SAVING THE WORLD AND OTHER EXTREME SPORTS, the closing chapter of James Patterson's thrilling trilogy. The time has arrived for Max and her winged "Flock" to face their ultimate enemy and discover their original purpose: to defeat the takeover of "Re-evolution", a sinister experiment to re-engineer a select population into a scientifically superior master race...and to terminate the rest. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel have always worked together to defeat the forces working against them--but can they save the world when they are torn apart, living in hiding and captivity, halfway across the globe from one another?
Customer Reviews:
Everybody loves Max? Not quite........2007-10-07
I bought this book under the impression that it would be entertaining and at least relatively well-written. Unfortunately, I was sorely mistaken. Although younger readers may like Max and her companions, I would advise against the series for anyone over the age of eleven.
Many parts of the book were poorly thought-out, and there were gaping holes when loose ends should have been tied up. For example, there is no explaination of how Max's arm began functioning again, but the chip was gone. And what were Itex's motives for 'torturing the bird-kids,' as Max puts it? I could go on and on, but I would probably be typing for the next few weeks. Lastly, Max seems to have no flaws--she's pretty, strong, smart, and fast. And it's not just Max, none of the characters have any depth at all. The book would probably be about half as short if it weren't for the pointless space-filling details.
All in all, I think that Maximum Ride was a waste of time and trees, not to mention space and gravity. Don't waste your money.
Satisfying thrid instalment.......2007-10-05
It's nice to see that once again, the cast of Maximum Ride is portrayed as young people, rather than just little adults. Even in their not so perfect world, the episode where Max and Fang butt heads over Ari and Fang's reactions further down the line illustrate what it would be like to not only have to take on an evil multi-national conglomerate, but what it's like to be fourteen and taking on such a task.
The use of the internet as a rallying cry to bring other young people into the scene to help out the flock shows readers, young and old alike, that young people are bright and resourceful, not just running to the closest adult (who'd hear a kid telling a crazy story and blow them off) to resolve the situation.
Mr. Patterson has done a great job at creating a universe where young readers will very much enjoy themselves and want to come back for more. Heck, I've got a Master's degree and am ten years out of high school, and I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Pleasant diversion.......2007-10-04
Max Ride is a fun character. She and her companions have been well developed through the series. As the fifth book in which these winged adolescents appear, it is a pleasant way of relaxing into the world of one's imagination.
If you are a teen you will love it!.......2007-09-18
If this book was targeted for a broad audience then I would rate it a 1. However, and fortunately, it is not. If you are 9 to 14, buy it, you will love it! The series has a very specific range of readers: kids under eight will not be able to comprehend the concept (excluding the elite); teens over fourteen may be psycologically beyond accepting the elementary concept (for them I recommend adult science-fiction).
Patterson does a wonderful job of delivering an outstanding teen series. Read them all!
I hope this isn't the last for Max!.......2007-09-13
A great trilogy! I just hope this isn't all for this delightful yet action packed series. A great book series for any age.

Book Description
Yoga Nidra means "Yogic Sleep". It is a deep relaxation in which you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state, and enter into the deep sleep state, while remaining fully awake and alert. This state of awareness is extremely beneficial, both for releasing stress, and for experiencing the joy of subtler spiritual explorations or experiences.
The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.
Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention throuh music or inner fantasies. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.
The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.
The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.
After some time of practicing Yoga Nidra, you will naturally find it to be a most enjoyable and spiritually inspiring part of your life.

The Beginning of a Wonderful Journey.......2007-09-28
I just got my Yoga Nidra CD yesterday. My husband and I put it on last night. The sound quality is very good. The voice is very clean and clear. Unfortunately, we fell asleep before we could really get into the meditation. Actually, he fell asleep and his snoring was not conducive to my meditation! I turned the CD off and tried it again later. Then, I fell asleep within a few minutes.
I thought this morning would be a good time to try again and I must say, I was amazed. I didn't fall asleep, but at one point, I did pass quickly through a "dream." It was quite vivid, but very short. During the first part of the meditation, my mind was very active. The voice would say, "Be aware of your forehead." I was aware of my forehead and within a split moment, I was aware of something else! The voice said, "Be aware of your nostrils." I was aware of my nostrils and the breath going in and out, then suddenly I was aware of the bills I had to pay today. Towards the end of my meditation, though, I noticed the stray thoughts started to become fewer and I was able to focus longer on the body part I was supposed to be focusing on. I made it to the 10 minute silent part, the last track, of the cd before my dog started scratching on my bedroom door. I was a bit disappointed at not being able to make it through the entire CD, but what I did do had a very calming effect on the rest of my day. It wasn't a sluggish calm, but a refreshing calm. My muscles felt relaxed, as well as my mind. I can't wait to try again tomorrow. This time, I'll bring the dog in the room with me, so she won't scratch on the door. Maybe she'll make it to Nidra, too!
The Best Yoga Nidra CD one can get.......2007-08-28
Finally I got what I was looking for....peace.
Extremely Relaxing CD, with crystal clear recording and the guided voice of god realized soul makes the spritual journey more enjoyable. If you are a person set out in the path of sprituality, looking for liberation or else just looking for peace or stress free life, then this is the best you can get. Please don't see it as a product, its a gift by swamiji to us and to mankind.
Highly recommended!!
could be better.......2007-08-23
this tape is good if you want to relax and focus your mind and body.
It's not the right product if you are looking for tape that allows you to fall sleep
Good for stress.......2007-06-20
Giving in to this CD gives you a good hour of relaxation. And puts you into a relaxing deep, yet conscious sleep. I personally remember laying on my mat and starting, within what seemed like minute all I remebered was the voice telling me to awake. But when I looked at my clock an entire hour had passed.
serious and the best it can get.......2007-05-13
It is the most serious and deep material I have found so far. It is the real thing.May be not for everybody, because it is only for real searchers of the soul and mind!
I highly recommend it .
Book Description
The business world is ready for an entirely new approach to leadership. Steve Farber has written the perfect book to energize business leaders and help them make the leap into extreme leadership. In fact, taking a giant
""L.E.A.P."" forward is exactly what Farber prescribes. What exactly is an extreme leader? One who cultivates
love, generates
energy, inspires
audacity, and provides
proof.
In his exciting and innovative new business parable, The Radical Leap, Farber explores an entirely new leadership model, one in which leaders are not afraid to take risks, make mistakes in front of employees, or actively solicit employee feedback. His book dispenses with the typical, tired notions of what it means to be a leader.
Farber, former Vice President and Official Mouthpiece of the Tom Peters Company, has written a business parable like no other, filled with vivid, fully realized, and eccentric characters, crazy plot twists, honest and believable conversations about leadership, and most importantly, an innovative program for leaders to inspire and engage their companies.
In The Radical Leap, we meet Steve, a leadership consultant who is intrigued and challenged by an enigmatic man named Edg, from whom he learns the concept of
L.E.A.P. Steve is then asked to help a friend, Janice, overcome conflicts at the biotech company where she works and bring back the company's inspiring former CEO. The company is revitalized, having undergone a radical and successful transformation.
Farber's book reveals the questions leaders must ask themselves in order to truly become extreme leaders, including:
Why do I love my business, my employees, and my customers, and how can I show them how I feel? What effect do my actions have on the energy of the people around me? (OR, what are the unnecessary, time-consuming, bureaucratic policies and procedures that suck our energy?) How are we going to change the world of our company, our employees, customers, marketplace, and industry? What have I done today to show my commitment to my colleagues and customers?
Customer Reviews:
Motivation with a capital M.......2007-07-08
If you're looking to recharge your corporate batteries--or trying to acquire your first set--this book is for you. Farber tells the story, his story perhaps, of a management consultant who has lost his passion for the work. He's going through the motions until he encounters a series of oddball business visionaries who utterly transform his spirit. What makes these visionaries so odd is their fundamental approach to work: they infuse it with love. The LEAP in The Radical Leap stands for ...
cultivate Love
generate Energy
inspire Audacity
provide Proof
That's an approach to leadership that's as inspiring as it is daring. I wonder how many of us have the courage to follow Farber's way? The Radical Leap requires leaders to have a vision, bare their souls, relish their mistakes, invite risk, challenge conventional wisdom and express love always. Wow.
Farber was smart to write this as a novelette. If he had laid out his ideas in a typical self-help book, they would have sounded pie-in-the-sky. But as Farber relates his own transformation in narrative form, encountering a variety of hiccups along the way, his gives his ideas a concreteness that makes them seem not only realistic, but implementable.
Leap into Leadership .......2007-07-06
The Radical Leap that gets us to think about leadership - or extreme leadership, to use Farber's term. What exactly is an extreme leader? One who cultivates love, generates energy, inspires audacity, and provides proof. (Hence the acronym, LEAP in the title of the book.)
Along with compelling conversation about these four key points, the book has more plot twists, the characters are more interesting, and the language is a bit edgier than the typical business parable by Patrick Lencioni, Ken Blanchard or Spencer Johnson.
It was named one of the Top 10 Best Business Books for 2004 and received the Acclaimed Reader's Choice Award from Fast Company magazine.
Great LEAP- Distribute to Mgmt Team.......2007-05-29
I just finished Radical Leap within a week after receiving . . . you can easily get through this book in a matter of a few hours. Great story and content to help you get the most out of your organization. Well-organized - with specific questions at the back of the book to put the words into practice . . .
Corporate Rise.......2007-05-14
The "Radical Leap" provides a good overview for personal leadership. However, it does not provide enough specificity for someone really interested in reaching the top of his or her organization. I still believe it is a good book, but I would suggest Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership as a must read book.
Surfin' to Success.......2007-04-08
I read this book with my own organization's challenges in mind. The concepts seemed perfect in symetry and sharply delivered. The only reason I'm holding back the fifth star is because his insertions of setting descriptions and flavor were somewhat "off" in their delivery and a bit "forced." Still, the book has a powerful message and can be read in an afternoon.
Book Description
No pasta? No dessert? No way! Everything in moderation, says Rachael Ray. After all, some days only chocolate or spaghetti will hit the spot.
In Rachael Ray’s 30-Minute Get Real Meals, the bestselling cookbook author and Food Network star serves up another helping of creative, hassle-free recipes that are ready to rock your tastebuds in less than thirty minutes. The latest addition to Rachael’s runaway hit series of 30-Minute Meals cookbooks is designed for cooks who want to look and feel great but long for the fun and the flavor that’s missing from their extreme low-carb meals. Why fill your shopping cart and your stomach with processed, low-carb cereals and breads that taste like cardboard when you can eat the foods you crave? Here, at last, are recipes for those who just cannot and will not live totally carb-free: Pasta dinners made mostly with proteins and vegetables and only a couple of ounces of pasta per servings, fresh Thai and Mexican lettuce wraps, take-out-style stir-frys, and tons of burger ideas—with and without the buns. And when you’ve just got to satisfy that sweet tooth, even nonbakers (like Rachael) will flip for Nutty Creamsicle Pie, Stuffed Roasted Strawberries, and other surprisingly easy dessert recipes.
With more than 150 new dishes, plenty of time-saving tips, and a generous serving of Rachael's “you can do it” attitude, 30-Minute Get Real Meals proves you don’t have to go to extremes to eat healthy.
Rachael Ray confesses that there’s pasta in her pantry, and she isn’t afraid to admit that chili is just an excuse to snack on corn chips. On the other hand, she also confesses that it’s more fun to shop for clothes when she’s eating fewer carbs. So what’s a carb-frustrated cook to do these days? Don’t go to extremes, says the force of nature behind Food Network’s 30-Minute Meals. Get real! With a little creativity and less than half an hour, now you can watch your carbs and eat them, too. Satisfy your carb-starved cravings and still mind that waistline with more than 150 healthy, delicious recipes—including Rachael’s first-ever section devoted just to desserts:
•Snacks and Super-Supper Snacks
•Burgers Gone Wild
•Take a Dip: Fondues
•Salads that Stack Up
•That’s Souper
•Well-Rounded Square Meals
•Pasta: Come Home Again

Customer Reviews:
great food.......2007-10-07
Another great book full of the tastiest simplistic recipes I have grown to expect from Rachael Ray.
Horrible & too much Pork .......2007-10-01
This book is horrible especially if you are someone that doesn't like or prefers not to eat PORK since half the Book requires PORK PRODUCTS. The meals are short but unless you start preparing the items you need - no meal is 30 minutes. Some of the items are Quick but not 1/2 & I am a Great cook that was not satisfied with this book. Sorry :(
Disappointed!.......2007-08-29
I was extremely disappointed with the recipes. Most of the ingredients call for unusual cooking items and most recipes call for salt. They just weren't appealing and I probably won't use anything from the book.
Racheal Ray's 30-minute Get Real Meals: Eat Healthy Without Goimg to Extremes.......2007-07-11
I was excited by the reviews I read on this cookbook and the fact that the receipes were not time consuming. How I was very dissappointed. There are many receipes for cooking pork and beef, both of which I eat in very limited portions. Also some spices I am unfamiliar with and would hvae liked to know what part of the grocery store to find them, without having to spend a lot of time searching.
It's Real Alright!.......2007-06-24
This is a must have book for busy parents who need to feed their munchkins quick and healthy meals. Recipes from this book keep baby smiling all the time. And they help keep dad from being mistaken for a grounded blimp. The meals are savory and delicious. Now if I could only have Mrs. Ray over to cook one for us some night---that would be a great treat!

Great book on paterns, and XP.......2007-03-18
This book covers the most common, and usefull design patterns. Each patter is presented in plain egnlish, with full examples.
In addition to patterns this book covers the principles surounding patterns that make them truely usefull.
Super Book - The best of them all.......2006-11-10
In my role as an architect and a J2EE evangelist, I have to teach a lot about OOAD principles, the Java language and Agile techniques. There are lots of books in my armour that capture the gist of many of these practices and techniques. But none in my opinion better than this book.
Robert Martin is a master at explaining OOAD concepts and applying them to the Agile methodology. For instance, the Agile practices mandate certain practices that need to be implemented in the upfront design and conception of the project. This is in contrast to the methodologies that were hitherto used that emphaisized methodology over design.
This book provides that point of fusion. A great achievement indeed! Concepts such as dependency injection and the Single Responsibility Principle were explained before they became mainstream design tenets.
Industrial strength book.......2005-04-13
Many OO/Patterns books are written as an introduction to the concepts and gloss over the nuances of building software in the real world. This book takes on the nitty gritty of what most developers face day to day. While it does include the gratuitous "student registration" example, this book actually delves into issues such as integrating legacy code. It also actually implements bad design choices before moving on to better solutions, and even these solutions are described in terms of trade-offs between competing forces. Also, by discussing specific Design Patterns in more depth than the cannonical format, I had a few "a-ha" moments when patterns I never quite understood emerged. I would/should have given this book 5 stars, but I had problems with the layout (oversized pages/no margins), the inconsitencies of diagrams (clouds and UML), and the disjoint feeling that the book was a collection of separately written articles, although the author does tie them nicely together. All in all, this is a must have.

Required Reading - none better.......2005-02-11
Absolutely no one writes as well, knows as much, or has as much to say about designing world class programs as Robert Martin. This book should be on every serious programmer's shelf; whatever language you happen to be programming in.
Excellent book on principled software development.......2005-01-26
If you always wondered how to find the "right" abstractions - which are nowadays called objects - in your programming. This book gives you an idea what the guiding principles should be.
Don't expect it to be a silver bullet. It is neither the best book on agile software development practices nor the best book on design patterns, but it is the best book on sound principles behind software development. So I believe that some of the content will still be valid in the post OOD-world, whatever it is going to be.
So if you ever wondered, why sometimes programms look good, and most of the times they are just outright ugly, this book gives you a couple of pointers where to look for the problems.
Two more things: a) it is actually fun to read, b) from my experience in project management and software development I don't believe the radical XP approach will establish itself - it doesn't give managers the feeling they are in control. Not that they are with the classic waterfall, but they think they do. Some practices such as pair programming and test-driven development will become best practices - or are they already? The rest will probably be dropped once the fad is over.

In the Gravest Extreme.......2007-10-11
The book dialoges when and why you would ever use a handgun to protect yourself. It cleared up a lot of misconceptions on my part. It helped me prepare for my concealed handgun license class. It gave me enough evidence to have an intelligent conversation with the instructor so that I could get the most out of the class. The book is short and quick enough to read in an afternoon.
Great Book but Out of Date.......2007-09-26
Massad Ayoob wrote this in 1980, and after 27 years, there have been a lot of changes in the US legal system. For example, concealed carry is legal in most of the US. The big trouble with this book is there is no way for a lay person to know what's no longer valid. Basing personal actions on the out-of-date book can cause you to have a very bad day.
I recommend The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense (Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, & Shoot a Gun in Self Defense) instead of this book. "The Conceal Handgun Manual" has been updated and provides a great wealth of information for about the same price.
Massad, please update this book!
History book, not practical in modern terms.......2007-09-23
The book would have been more worthwhile when it was originally published and is still interesting as a historical document. Much of the book is obsolete, predating the .40 S&W and polymer framed guns, and to some extent modern ammunition. When discussing guns for women, he doesn't promote calibers above .38 special "Unless you're a big girl". The sections on when you are allowed to use armed defense are decent, if a bit generic--Basically, "in the gravest extreme" when all other methods have failed. Out of the 130 pages, the currently useful parts could easily be distilled down to 30 pages or so.
Great Book!.......2007-09-05
This book gets you thinking about all the possibilities and recourses that could happen if you had to use your firearm for protection. Ayoob clearly points out the good, the bad and the ugly of CCW and weapons defense.
Personal Protection.......2007-08-13
This book by Massad Ayoob a police officer and instructor of personal defense tactics is very good for men and women alike. You will learn some areas of personal defense that you can practice. You will learn just about every aspect of carrying and owning a gun in this small book.

Customer Reviews:
Recipes are bland.......2007-09-01
I own this book and the recipes are bland. Most have salt and pepper as the main seasoning. This book also lacks continuity. What i mean is that each recipe seems to have a unique ingredient. So i cant just stock up on basics and prepare several meals from that. Each time i go to prepare a meal there is some new ingredient which i dont have and now have to buy.
Also some of the recipes arent "extremely low carb". One recipe was 10 effective carbs (ie. net carbs) per small serving and about 25 carbs total. My normal portion size was like 40 net carbs!
Save your money!.......2007-05-08
Those who gave this a good review must not have tried any of the recipes.
The book title says extreme lo-carb meals on the go. It is none of these things.
A lot of the recipes contain low carb breads, pastas and tortillas which is fine if you have no weight to lose.
The book promises fast recipes but tells you in the introduction that to the author fast means that the recipes can be cooked in less than an hour. Many of the recipes require that you prep ingredients in advance, the author calls "make ahead".
Many of the recipes call for expensive, hard to find substitutions for sugar, wheat, and syrups.
The only good recipes in the book, which were few and far between, I already had from free, online, low carb sites. (I saw two recipes out of the whole book that I would try and already had seen them online.)
A huge disappointment and I was very excited by the reveiws given so I thought this would be a good resource for me.
Save your money. Search online for the same recipes without the expensive ingredient substitutes.
Great Cookbook.......2007-04-16
This is a must have cookbook for those of you that live life on the go.

Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-09-23
It's a good book on project management. I wish it was more in line with the standards from PMI. Also covers some advanced topics such as portfolio management but not in much detail.
Good Book for a beginner.......2007-01-19
If you are a practicing project manager, you may not find this book very useful. If you are new to Project Management (or planning to move to Project Management), then this book can help a lot. This book in my opinion is a text book (and a very good one). Book covers critical aspects of Project Management and explains planning and scheduling in an easy-to-understand fashion. I found the examples for backward pass, forward pass, constructing network diagram etc very useful. Author has used real-world examples so reader can co-relate to similar scenarios from their professional life.
Buy this book if you want your team's project to succeed.......2006-10-01
Don't buy this book if you're memorizing answers for some PMP exam.
But if you've got a real software project you need to deliver, and you've got a team looking to you for answers ... this is your book!
It's clear, it's practical, and it's packed with excellent ideas for managing just about any project, of any size.
It's great - buy it!
it is not good.......2006-08-11
The title is very attractive. however the content is more common. maybe it is good for beginner. most of content is focus on Traditional. nothing or very little useful information on Adaptive and etreme. if you want to learn how to deal with the adaptive and extreme project. just buy another one
Good material but not enough coverage.......2006-06-08
This book covers the fundamentals of project management but lacks details. It also lacks simplicity and consistency. The Critical path example discussed on p. 132 to 134 is confounding (especially the part explaining the difference between free and total slack). Better and more lucid examples demonstrating the various topics covered in this book would have made this book a 'standard' must-have.
Book Description
Dr. James Canton, a renown futurist, CEO of the Institute for Global Futures, and Fortune 1000 advisor, charts a course to steer you through the volatile changes that lie 5, 10, and 20 years ahead. The Extreme Future is this generation's Future Shock, Alvin Toffler's classic book on what's next and how to prepare for tomorrow.
Get ready for fast, radical, and complex change. Get ready for the Extreme Future. Our world is constantly buffeted by new and dramatic changes that we can't fully grasp. No one is fully prepared for the challenges, crises, and risks that lie ahead. The Extreme Future is a blueprint for what's next and how to navigate these changes.
Get ready for fast, radical and complex change. Get ready for the Extreme Future. Our world is constantly buffeted by new and dramatic changes that we can't fully grasp. No one is fully prepared for the challenges, crises and risks that lie ahead. The Extreme Future is a blueprint for what's next and how to navigate these changes.
An advisor to three White House's spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Canton challenges us that with the right information about future trends it is possible to identify probable outcomes. It is possible, with the right information to navigate the Extreme Future.
The book covers the following major trends:
* How climate change and energy trends will reshape the planet
* How shifting population trends will transform the workforce
* How radical innovation trends will competitively drive business
* How astounding medicine trends will enhance people's life
* How dangerous terrorism trends will threaten the individual.
* How the rise of China will bring on a new global power struggle
The answers to these questions are not only available, but contained within these pages. The Extreme Future is the forecasting handbook for the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Too much preening and raw speculation.......2007-10-09
The book contains a lot of preening; the author seems to think it is important to remind us (anecdotally) how many huge companies and heads-of-state he's interacted with. Many of his predictions range from poorly explored (he talks about a hydrogen fuel economy without addressing the fact that hydrogen is just a transport--not a readily available source of energy) to the absurd (predictions that teleportation will be available within decades, given the fact of photonic teleportation which doesn't even slightly approach the complexity of disintegrating, transporting and reintegrating an object!) There's also a lot of political advocacy here; I'd have simply preferred an analysis of technological and cultural trends along with research to back it up.
THE EXTREME FUTURE is recommended cross the board .......2007-10-07
THE EXTREME FUTURE: TOP TRENDS THAT WILL RESHAPE THE WORLD IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS could've been featured in our 'Business Shelf' section but is surveyed here for its wider interest beyond the general-interest business lending library. Its chapters discuss and define new risks and definitions of opportunity and come from a renowned futurist and advisor to three administrations, and it covers everything from the climate and energy trends certain to reshape the planet to shifting population demographics, medical enhancements, and the spread of terrorism. A key survey, THE EXTREME FUTURE is recommended cross the board for high school, college, and general-interest public library lending collections.
Prediction for the Future: This Book Flops.......2007-05-29
I was very disappointed with this book. Between his shameless plugs for his speaking engagements and various other activities, the author pulls together various thoughts, statistics, and projections that could easily be synthesized by reading a few choice periodicals. If you are a reader in search of innovative thoughts about the future that may help guide your worldview, company, or investments, I would advise you to look elsewhere. I will not read another work by this author.
It will be fun to see how true this turns out to be.......2006-11-29
As I read this book I am reminded of the old saying that 'forecasting the future is easy, it's being right that's hard.'
Dr. Canton breaks down his forecasts into ten areas. Some of them I find very good. Some of them I find OK. Some of them I disagree with. Some of them I'd replace with others.
His view of the future of the individual, Chapter 10, I find totally agreeable. He says that protecting the freedom and rights of the individual is going to be difficult. I absolutely agree. There will be a great deal of pressure to restrict rights (the so called Patriot's Act) in the name of security. The Democrats would like to impose gun control. The Republicans would like to impose abortion control.
His view on energy I find half right. He is right that we are running out of energy. Oil will get progressively more expensive. Then he says, 'Hydrogen is the most plentiful gas in the universe...It's abundant, reliable, renewable, clean and secure because hydrogen is everywhere, America wouldn't have to rely on foreign suppliers.' Yes, but hydrogen isn't a fuel, it's a way to store energy. You have to put more energy into separating hydrogen from oxygen (where it's mostly found, i.e. water) than you get back when you burn it. Nuclear power is the only forseeable place to get the energy to put into hydrogen, and we still have problems of where to store the old fuel rods, do you want them in your back yard?
He sees medicine making all kinds of advances that will lead to longer and healthier lives. I'm not so sure. AIDS is likely to move up to #3 in killing people in the next few years, and there's no cure in sight. Drug resistent forms of TB, malaria, etc. are spreading. New potential diseases like avian flu. If you're interested I'd recommend 'The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance' by Laurie Garrett. It's a bit old, but still the best on the subject.
This is a fun book to read. It will be even more fun to see how correct it turns out to be.
Highly speculative.......2006-11-09
The author makes many speculative and outlandish predictions of the future. His sheer number of intuitive predictions will allow him to be right on many matters, but very off on some.
What is lacking are analysis and technical details of why the future is the way the author claims will be. For example, he claims lack of energy supply and technological progress will bring forth an age of hydrogen powered cars and fusion nuclear reactors. Yet, he provides no technical reasons why these two technologies will dominate the energy industry. Just how will we manage to produce hydrogen in large concentration and quantities which will be cost effective when it takes MORE energy to produce concenttrated hydrogen today than the energy value of the hydrogen themselves? Also, since when was controlled nuclear fusion reactors even possible? An explaination of how we will overcome the technical hurdles is missing throughout this book.
Some of the claims are downright outlandish. For example, the author claims we will have teleporter which will transfer objects throughout the globe. Again, the missing piece is of any scientific backing or explaination.
Some of the predictions are based on facts, and therefore, have strong predictive value. For example, the author claims that we will have a skilled worker shortage well into 2025 and beyond. This is based on a solid demographic data which indicates that we will have a shrinking workforce of suitable age in America.
Finally, the author is a PhD, but he never says on what subject. He also seems to compare himself to Da Vinci.....He claims many of his previous predictions were right on target. But I imagine many of his predictions were dead off target as well. The sheer number of predictions in this book will allow the author to claim that he is a futurist because many of his predictions will probably come true. Just don't expect him to backup his claims with solid science, facts, or analysis.
