Comprehensive - read BEFORE buying your Iggy.......2007-08-26
First-rate coverage of the whys & wherefores of raising iguanas, especially the Green Iguana. It would be a good idea to read the first few chapters before buying to get a feel for the Iguana "lifestyle".
Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual.......2007-06-28
As the subtitle says, this is the "ultimate owner's manual." It is comprehensive book, with detailed and specific information, punctuated by anecdotes from iguana owners. Because the iguana is a difficult pet to maintain, with specific environmental and dietary requirements, this book is essential to the iguana owner.
A must have for all Iguana owners, or Wanna be's.......2007-03-23
This book has it all. Everything you need to know about your pet. The photos are beautiful, and the written word is concise and easily understood. The authors passion for Iguanas is obvious, and his knowledge on the subject vast. It may seem expensive and perhaps you wonder if you need so much information, but if you have an Iguana you owe it to yourself to understand this unusual reptiles behavior, habits and special needs. After reading this book, I became more aware of my Jacks special place on this planet.
Exhaustively researched and still a good read........2007-02-23
This book has helped me a great deal in giving both my pet iguanas excellent care. It covers all the ranges of care from designing or a habitat or what to look for in a preexisting one, as well as proper health care and nutrition. It even explains how to identify the country of orgin based on coloring and body type. It teaches responsibility and actually discourages getting an iguana if the would be owner thinks it is an easy to care for pet. All in all its one of the best pieces of nonfiction i have read and it full of easy to follow advice presented in a clear detailed manner.
Extremely informative and accurate.......2007-02-02
This book is the best Green iguana book I have ever read and has the best and most accurate information on large green iguanas. It is very difficult to take care of these little green guys and this book absolutely a life saver. If I only had the funds to purchase one book on iguanas, I would choose this one.

A must book for any enthusiasts on amphibians captive care.......2007-08-01
A must book for any enthusiasts or veterinarian. It is the first serious book on amphibians medicine. It also covers some interesting chapters on captive care and rearing.
Medical degree needed!.......2007-05-27
I bought this book when I had a sick newt on my hands and wanted to get some deeper insights as to what may be wrong. Even the vets I took my pet to were mostly unable to help much, so I tried to take matters into my own hands, at least this way when I went to the vet, I'd be able to bring some ideas and understandings to the table. Let me add that I am a science teacher, so I am no dummy with respect to scientific understanding, but my background is NOT in biology, which is what's essential in the understanding of this book. Also, the book is not meant for "lay people", such as myself, but rather veterinary or medical students. Now I see why. The book was very expensive, which I didn't mind if it had helped, and very difficult to underdstand. The book had very little information with respect to newts in general and rather focused on other amphibians such as frogs. There were very few pictures or chapters/paragraphs even devoted to newts. I wish there had been a copy of the book in a library for me to check out beforehand, as I would not have purchased the book if I did. I'm sure for a vet student the book is probably wonderful, but for someone with no biology background trying to search for some specific answers, it fell way short.
An invaluable title for veterinarians.......2001-12-13
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.
Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright.......2001-10-17
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry. Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences. Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques. Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.
Recognizing that the understanding of veterinary medicine is facilitated by illustrations, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry includes 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables.
We highly recommend this book to any individual, institution or organization that works with captive or wild amphibians: veterinary clinicians, comparative pathologists, veterinary students, herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoos, aquariums, biomedical research facilities, and libraries.

Must Read for All Prospective and Current Iggy Caretakers.......2007-08-04
There is a reason that many reptile rescues require iguana adopters to purchase this book. Melissa Kaplan's book is the bible for iguana care. If you read this book and follow it's instructions, your little green friend will live a long and healthy life! The book is also extremely useful if you are debating getting an iguana. You should definitely read it before bringing one home (the level of care an iguana requires might discourage you from getting one).
Generalizations and exaggerations.......2006-01-31
"most", "some"... Facts need to be added to support her views, which is what her writings come down to... her views. Stick with other books if you are looking for the way to properly care for your little green friend. Check out 'Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual by James W., III Hatfield' Hatfield relies less on shock value and exaggerations, facts are important.
A "Must Have" for every iguana owner.......2006-01-25
I have had my green iguana for three years and it seems I never stop learning when it comes to whats best for her. I really wasn't aware how poor of care she was receiving until I bought this book. It's helped me help her so many times, and opened my eyes to details I was ignorant about before.
This book is easy to read and understand. The way the topics are divided make it easy to reference anything you want. Though it's not meant to be read cover to cover, I did so anyway.
Melissa Kaplan knows what she's talking about.
A Must for Ig Owners & Ig Owners To Be.......2005-09-27
Excellent information written concisely and with a sense of humor by someone who truly knows, loves, and admires the species.
Quality & Value.......2003-06-05
Living in the Florida Keys we have dealt extensively with discarded Iguanas - perhaps 15 or more. People buy them, and get rid of them constantly - and down here, in the semi-tropics, they can survive (with difficulty)in the wild.
With all the iguana problems we have encountered good information is a necessity, & we have purchased many iguana books including Hatfield's "Green Iguana, the Ultimate Owners Guide" (a great book, but we still prefer Kaplan's "Iguanas for Dummies").
If you still want addtional technical data you can add "What's Wrong with My Iguana" by John Rossi M.A., D.V.M. and "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger Klingenberg D.V.M.
Kaplan's book is based on research & a lot of personal experience. It is thorough, and her experience shows through - there are tidbits of information that have been useful to us that we have not found elsewhere. She has long maintained a caring website to help iguana owners and potential iguana buyers - not just to sell books. And the price of this book is reasonable.
By all means get a good book like Hatfield's or Kaplan's - preferably before you get an iguana. Even if the book talks you out of getting an ig for a pet it will be well worth the price. Proper care for an iguana involves a devoting a lot of time and spending a lot of money. The cost of the animal is nothing in comparison, and they are far more complex to care for than a dog, cat, or hamster. Judging from the number of abandoned iguanas in the Florida Keys a huge number of people do not bother to inform themselves and the animals suffer. It may not be entirely their fault. Many pet stores do not seem to offer the best books or accurate information - often they just want to sell a hapless reptile, and make a few bucks on inadequate (sometimes dangerous) supplies and food. They frequently give bad advice.
Whatever book you get you will still need to get a good experienced herp vet., and they are hard to find. Things go wrong with iguanas that are not covered with specificity in any of these books. We have been unfortunate enough to encounter some of them.

I just wish this book was longer! I learned a lot from such a small book.
Essential Knowledge for the True Reptile Lover.......2001-07-07
Consider yourself a true reptile lover? Then you should concerned about the well being of your pet. A healthy pet is a happy pet. Keep your pet well-fed and in good hygienic condition is essential. However, it is possible that the reptile may be suffering from parasites without our knowledge (such as through food). This book tells the pet lover what are the various parasites, what symptoms, what cures, etc. It is truly a good book on the topic.
The words, of what I would consider in ideal size, are printed on good quality "glossy" paper and very professional.
I have a copy and I think it's the best book available I can find about the topic. This book that's good in appearance and content. Get it if you are a true reptile lover.
Everyone herp owner should buy 2 of these books!.......2001-06-13
And, at Amazon's price, you can afford to buy two of them--one for you and one for your vet! I did! My vet can't thank me enough, and now I don't have to loan him my book every time I want him to see my veiled chameleon. It would be great to live in a big city with vets that specialized in herps/reptiles; but here in the rest of the real world, there are furry pet vets on every corner who can give excellent medical care to your reptiles and amphibians using Dr. Klingenberg's book.
Key features for you and your vet: 1. Medicine names, dosage for types/weight of different animals, means of administering, side effects, and uses. 2. Photographs of extracted worms and of microscope slides showing various micro-parasites & their eggs. 3. Sketch showing all the worms & parasites in relative size to each other. 4. Tips on "shot-gun" approach to parasite & disease treatment in wild-caught animals, discussion of various cures, discussion of the effects of diseases on your herp, and practical husbandry/keeping/handling/feeding info on how to prevent future reoccurances.
I got this book when I bought my first frog "just-in-case," but I never needed it, never used it, until this year when my chameleon was sick with worms. I was glad I had it and that is when I decided to buy a second copy for my vet's clinic. You can't afford to wait to buy this book until you need this book. You need it now while your animals are healthy!!!
All Amphibian & Reptile Keepers should have this book.......2001-02-24
And you should have it before you need it--as in, before you animal is sick. This is a complete and well done reference guide for those of us who don't need to know the vet manual's textbook explanations and can't afford to own those massive volume collections anyhow. It covers basic diagnosis, examination, equipment, internal and external parasites, medicines, dosages, tips for treating, how to administer meds to differnt types of animals, hygiene information, and, best of all to help your vet out, it contains photographs of microscope slides of what the nematoads or protozoans will look like and sketches of them for identification of relative size.
If you don't have an exotics or herp vet near you, this will help your furry pet vet help your herp. Believe me, I am thankful every day that I got this book when I didn't really need it because it meant the small town horse and dog vet clinic could see my old world chameleon and HELPED me, like they would not have been able to without this book.
Nicely done book, good for vet and pet owner.......2000-10-24
Roger Klingenberg is a well-recognized veterinary expert on reptiles and their parasites. His book is very well done and appropriate for both veterinarians and reptile owners. The combination of clear line drawings and excellent black and white photos clearly demonstrate how to recognize, diagnose and treat parasites of a variety of reptiles. The book is concise, clearly written and includes useful bibliography. For the price it can't be beaten!
Book Description
With 250 color photographs, Rhacodactylus is the most complete photographic and husbandry reference on crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, giant geckos, and other members of the genus. The three authors were pioneers in establishing these popular lizards in U.S. herpetoculture
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting and great knowledge..........2007-06-29
This book is a description in very specific details of the rhacodactylus family. I find it very important to know where these animals come from, how to maintain them in the most naturalistic way possible, etc. This book is a must need for Rhacodactylus keepers!
5 big thumbs up!
The Definitive Work.......2006-07-05
The nature of human beings is to explore, to examine, and to try to understand everything around us. This book benefits our instinctual search for information about the natural ecosystems around us. It provides us with an insight into the world of some of the rarest and most beautiful creatures in the world and lays bare the world in which they live. Anyone who has an interest in herpetology or is simply hoping to delve into the amazing world of reptile study can gain so much from this book and from Phillipe De Vosjoli's other outstanding and contemplative works.
Best Rhacodactylus Book in print.......2005-08-16
This is by far the best book in print on Rhac's. It covers Crested, Gargoyle, Chahoua, and the Giant Leachianus Geckos among others. It has sections on all aspects of careing for them including breeding. Many helpful photos to demonstrate the various color and structure morphs (especially of the Crested Geckos). The only thing that could be added here (maybe in a second edition) is what combinations of different morphs are likely to produce what morphs. Also some info on on temperature sex determination for incubation temps would be helpful in the future after more research is done in this area. The Authors all have plenty of first hand experience and some of the largest collections of these geckos in the world. All in all, the best book available on Rhac's at this time.
a must have for any rhacodatylus owner!!.......2003-12-13
This book is excellant! The text is thorough, and the illustrations are phenomenal. There is virtually no stone left unturned. Every question concerning the husbandry and natural history of rhacodactylus is explored and explained. The authors attention to detail is unmatched. This book is a must have for any person whom wants to own, or already owns any species of rhacodactylus, novice and expert alike.
If you have ANY interest in Rhacodactylus, get this book!.......2003-12-12
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in this amazing group of geckos. Rhacodactylus are a small group of geckos that are found only on the island of New Caledonia, that lies roughly between Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. For such a small group, these geckos occur in a diverse array of beautiful and often bizarre forms. One member of this genus, Rhacodactylus leachianus, holds the distinction of being the largest living species of gecko in the world, reaching a total length of up to 17 inches and weighing nearly a pound!
I have been keeping reptiles for 30+ years. I can remember back when the only readily available books on reptile or amphibian care had lots of pretty (or sometimes not so pretty and often mislabeled) pictures, but little useful information on the natural history or husbandry of these animals. Worse yet, what little information was there was frequently just plain wrong! Those of us who were really dedicated to the hobby had to go to university libraries and search out obscure zoo and animal care journals to gain insight on how to keep our animals healthy, happy and reproducing.
That all changed when Philippe de Vosjoli introduced his Advanced Vivarium Systems "Care and Maintenence" series of books that emphasized good, solid husbandry information, based on years of research by the top experts in the field. Many of these he authored or co-authored himself along with some of the other top reptile and amphibian keepers in the world. The goal of these books was to make good, solid information on proper care of reptiles and amphibians readily available, both to long time keepers and people just starting out in the hobby.
This latest work by he and his co-authors, Frank Fast and Allen Repashy, is one of his best and most ambitious works yet. In addition to the main authors, the information in this book has been compiled from many of the other top gecko keepers/breeders in the the U.S. and Europe. The book covers all six species and 2 subspecies of Rhacodactylus, giving descriptions of each, and excellent information on all aspects of their husbandry and breeding. Everything from nutrition, caging, breeding and much more are covered in great detail. In addition, the book contains some of the latest information on the habitat and ecology of these animals, along with numerous beautiful pictures of the different forms and color morphs of the geckos and their habitats.
This book is also an excellent companion volume for anyone lucky enough to own the now out of print Rhacodactylus - Biology, Natural History and Husbandry by Robert Seipp and Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel. The new book updates and greatly expands on much of the information presented in the earlier book.
I would highly recommend Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care to not only those of us that work with, or want to work with these animals, but also to anyone who just wants to know more about these beautiful and amazing creatures.

Customer Reviews:
It's herpetology's novel. .......2004-07-22
This is as much a lyrical story telling about the process and art of herpetoculture and herpetology as it is an informative book. The book details the experinces of the author in certain endevours (searching for a tiger rattlesnake, his first non-local snake etc.) in an entertaining readable manner. It's almost like a more intellectual, pre TV version of some of the Animal Planet reptile shows--that's the best analogy I can come up with. It's really more entertainment than information, although some info is provided (although the captive care information is out of date).
This book has a very select audience; non-herpers won't likely enjoy it and shouldn't bother. For those of us who are, well, it's a great read. We'll recognize ourselves in it (at least I did) in parts. The literate writing, the intelligent allusions and comments, all made for a very interesting and captivating first hand account of what are now the good old days of herpetoculture. If you are a serious herper, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Not just another snake book........2003-01-07
I first read this book when I was quite young, in Junior High school I believe. I am now 42 years old. I read it again in my twenties. It has been awhile since I read it but I still remember its magic. This book has two identities. It is of course about snakes and their captive environment. Though outdated it is still full of interesting tid-bits about snake care and behavior. The second identity of this book is more like a novel, especially to a youngster interested in snakes. Each chapter is full of adventure and the experiences of the author. It is well written in that you almost feel like you are in his boots when he catches and cares for his reptiles. Each page excites you to read the next. This is a fun book for anyone who enjoys snakes and snake hunting. I also highly recommend it for helping to teach a youngster the joy of reading due to its well-written novel type style and its interesting topic. It is also a wonderful book for any adult who wants to reminisce about a carefree youth or revisit childhood interests. I will always keep a copy of this gem in on my bookshelf. It's about time I read it again.
A special book for both reference and enjoyment.......1999-11-03
I thought this book was out of print and have been hording it jealously. I bought it orginally as a reference to help me as a novice snake owner, but I found the information facinating and gained a knowledge and love for snakes that I would never have expected. I will be thrilled to tell my friend whose kids just bought a snake that this treasure is available.
Quite possibly the best general work on reptile husbandry........1999-06-12
In my own extensive, lifetime herpetological library, this book rates as my favorite, and one of the best general works on reptile husbandry available anywhere. It is THE perfect snake book for the young herpetologist or adult collector new to the hobby. I used to run into Carl every so often while snakehunting in the Carolinas in my youth, and he was as wonderful a person as he was a top curator. His writings about snakehunting in "the old days" is as fascinating for the casual reader as for the experienced herp. This book was probably his best work, and years ago I paid nearly twice this price in an auction for an original copy.
A classic book of snake lore from the grandmaster of herps!.......1999-01-18
This book is a must for anyone who wishes to explore the world of herpetology. Unlike many fly-by-night authors, Kauffeld's books have influenced and educated several generations of naturalists. His books set the pace for all who came after him. Part how-to book part adventure book, "Snakes" brings to the reader more than just dry information. Whether it's hunting the eastern diamondback in South Carolina or searching for the elusive trans-pecos rat snake in Texas, Kauffeld takes you there.

Quite simply this is the most important book any guppy fancier can get. Stan imparts his extensive knowledge of guppy breeding andshowing in a clear conciseand informative manner. No pseudoscientific claptrap here - just the accumulated wisdom aquired as the top in his class. Read it
"The proper care of Guppies" is super........2000-05-03
This is an excellent book for both beginning and advanced aquarists alike. Stan's book is a very comprehensive guide to breeding, raising, and the proper care of show quality Guppies. He covers the various techniques used by himself and other top Guppy breeders to develop and maintain different strains of Guppies. The information contained in this book is very thorough and the pictures of his Guppies and those of other breeders, are outstanding. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in breeding quality fish.
The Most definitive book on raising Superior Guppies!.......1997-08-21
The author, Stan Shubel, uses the 30 years worth of guppy raising experience to bring to the reader a very down to earth, commonsense approuch to raising, caring for and showing this marvelous and intriguing tropical fish, the Guppy.
Stans ability to take the everyday care of the guppy and put it in a sensable and fun light make the book easy reading. In particular, the breeding and genetic subjects are laid out for the common hobbyist. No Genetic degree is required for understanding.
A very special part of the book is dedicated to the care and raising of Show Fish. It appears that Stan is now ready to share his inside secrets of raising and breeding quality Show Guppies.
This is a must read by any serious guppy breeder and a delightfully easy read for the casual and curious hobbyist.

Book Description
Tilapia are sometimes known as "aquatic chicken" due to their high growth rates, adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions, and ability to grow and reproduce in captivity and feed on low trophic levels. As a result, these fishes ahave become excellent candidates for aquaculture,
especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Indeed, tilapia culture has been expanding rapidly, and is now practiced in more than one hundred countries worldwide. There is a large and growing literature on tilapia in specialist journals, but there have been few attempts to synthesize this by a
single author. This book aims to fill this gap in the literature, by despcribing in detail the principles and practice of tilapia culture.

Mr. Dude thanks the author of this book.......2001-12-24
I'm the classic "how much is that puppy in the window?" case. I was in New York city walking in China town when I happened upon a bowl full of baby red ears. I just had to 'save' one of these squirming babies. Then I was worry about how to feed, house, and generally take care of my turtle, who was looking up at me with those moist, cat-like eyes while we sat on the subway. I had no idea how big it would get, or what to keep it in, or what to feed it besides the turtle pellets I got ripped off on.
I tried websites about sliders, while my baby sat in his styrofoam enclosure with his bowl of water and pellets sprinkled around him. Then I found this book on amazon.com. Right away I ordered it.
It has helped me alot. I bought a tank and food for my turtle, Mr. Dude. I learned how big he would get and where he came from. I also learned that it is illegall to sell baby red-eared sliders!!!
If you have a red-eared slider, or are looking into getting one, this book is a must-have.
(Good Luck!)
Good introduction to red-eared sliders.......2001-08-29
This book adequately covers the essentials of owning a turtle: housing, feeding, breeding, and diseases. The section on breeding is a little more extensive than in other intro books. A plus is that most of the pictures are in color. One thing missing from this book and others is a discussion of turtle behavior and sensory capability. Do they hear, see, smell, taste well? Do they like to hide? How long do they or can they stay submerged? Apparently and incorrectly, it is assumed this is all common knowledge. While this book will give one a start, owning a turtle is definitely a work in progress.
Red Eared Sliders.......1999-12-14
This was a very good book. It taught me a lot more than I used to know. I usually just look at the pictures but now that I've read this book I know a lot more. This book taught me how to take care of them and all of the diseases. If your looking for a good book to teach you every thing you need to know this is the one.

Turtles & Tortoises for Dummies.......2007-03-16
I never received this book. Sent an email to seller never received an answer. Bad, bad!!!! Very disappointed. Yes, it is paid for!
Great beginners book........2005-11-15
Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises. I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.
Not worth the money.......2004-06-17
Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't.
The book focuses an insane amount on the large, expensive (often over 1,000US), rare-in-captivity tortises like the Galapagos and aldabra tortise, which are exactly what the novice keeper wont' likely be buying. The common, affordable, and easier to keep turtles and tortises are given short shrift in this book. They may get a line or two, but that's about it.
Furthermore, what information is given seems suspect; reccomended cage sizes tend to be on the small side, temps can be off, as can humidity. It's really not worth having--I threw my copy away.
Save your money.......2004-03-17
I purchased this book thinking (hoping) it would be the excellent source of information it is advertised to be; it is not.
I am very experienced in keeping all kinds of companion animals. As a rule, when I think I might want to add a new species to my household, I research the critter in question with great care. I purchased this book prior to getting my first tortoise. At the same time, I began researching my chosen species on the internet. Based upon what I have learned on the net and in speaking with tortoise keepers & breeders via e-mail/telephone and in person at "reptile expos", the information in this book is at best dated and over simplified and at worst may be dangerous to your pet.
The kindest thing I can say about this book is that it is poorly organized. This alone makes it difficult to formulate an understanding of tortoise culture. Further, the author often contradicts herself, causing the reader to question whether they are misunderstanding the text as they go.
Turtles and torts are highly specialized - they do not adapt to us as dogs or cats do. We MUST adapt to them and fulfill their very specific needs completely. Please research your chosen species very carefully before you purchase a turtle or tort!
If you simply must buy this book, please do not use it as your only or best source of info.
Great for box and tortoise lovers.......2004-01-12
The author was very knowledgeable about her favorites: box turtles and (large) tortoises. That's all well and good, but... None of these turtles are suited for indoor keeping! I would expect that most prospective or current turtle keepers want or have smaller turtles, and it would have been nice to get more detailed info about them. If you can keep your chenolians in an outdoor habitat, BUY THIS BOOK. Otherwise, find another.
