5 out of 5 stars The ONLY way to raise great kids..........2007-09-27

I am a school psychologist, a parent, and a vocal advocate of the Love and Logic methods. This book has helped me personally and professionally, and is based on the idea that kids deserve love, respect, and oppportunities to learn from their mistakes. I recommend this book to teachers, parents, and anyone who works with kids. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A great read with tons of great advice.......2007-09-26

I love this book because I have been at a loss with what to do with my three year old. Timeouts don't work, yelling and getting angry doesn't work either. This book offers a fun to read philosophy with a plethora of stories to exemplify the techniques. I am not sure what the previous poster back in December of 2002 was talking about, this book is worth the purchase price and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon, Common Sense.......2007-09-13

An excellent model in which to rely upon to raise your children. It takes reading it over and over again to fully grasp and then implement.

5 out of 5 stars A life saver.......2007-08-26

With four boys driving me crazy every day (my oldest just turned 8 and my youngest is 2), this book has taught me great ways to deal with every day occurances. It is an easy read and has wonderful examples to help you see how to use their theories. It really does work, what they say to do in the book. I've read a lot of parenting books and this one has been the best by far. It is easy to read books on parenting, it's actually being able to do the things you read about that is hard. This book makes it easy to put into practice what you have read. It really has made my home a happier place to be.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book! Every parent should have it........2007-08-24

I can't stress enough how valuable this book is. I have two young children (under 4) and this was the single best parenting book I've read (and I've read a ton).

1 out of 5 stars I found this book offensive.......2007-02-27

There are two hypothetical families that the book follows throughout the course of the program. Lengthy backstories are given for both. One is a family where the wife dropped out of jr college when she married, and supported her husband financially through college, dropping her job as a secretary when she has her first child. This family lives in the midwest. The other family is ultimately a single Mom, living on the coast, who's husband leaves her because he feels emasculated by her career success. She gets the kids, since they "both know even without discussing it that they are primarily her responsibility".

I'm not looking for a book that covers every type of family everywhere, and I don't need it to be totally politically correct. But enough of a backstory is given here, that we can pretty much predict how these folks vote. (I'd also venture a guess as to how the author votes.) And the stories are completely irrelevant. Other books (like Supernanny's) focus on behaviors and techniques, and family dynamics are only discussed as they pertain to the children. This book devotes too much time to guilting women back into the kitchen, IMHO. While this is a fine choice for some, there are many modern families that this doesn't work for, for whatever reason.

If you're looking for a book with step-families, blended families, multi-cultural families, same-sex parents, stay-at-home-Dad's, extended families, dual-income families, or any other perfectly valid variation on Ward and June, look elsewhere. You won't find any of those in this book. You *will* find them in many parts of America.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-12-01

I do think that the book was very very helpful. It had comprehensive information written in a clear and friendly way. I am pretty sure every parent has something to benefit from reading this book. Even if you do not follow the 5-week program strictly, you can walk away with the general principles that the book draws your attention to. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Lifesaver!.......2006-04-24

Some people think they can just let their kids do whatever and they'll just naturally be angels. Attachment Parenting is the term for that. Well, I tried that and ended up with kids that had the attitude "I can do whatever and get away with it." In other words, my kids ended up being, I hate to say it, spoiled! I checked this book out at the library and read it word-for-word and I cannot begin to tell you how much this book has changed my life. I don't say that lightly. My family has done a 180! All because of this book. This book has literally since Day 1 transformed me into a better mother, better wife, and better friend. You think the tips you get out of here will just make your kid better, no, it makes YOU BETTER! It gives excellent tips on how to communicate with your child, how to make yourself more patient when you feel like you are about to lose it, and how to improve your relationships overall. I feel like this is a more loving family. I am definitely going to go out and buy this book! I can't thank Rex and Nicholas enough. They are parents themselves and they really know kids.

5 out of 5 stars A must!.......2006-04-06

Any parent with a strong-willed child really should read this. It shows you that you can help your child direct their actions. It gives hope -not to mention, suggestions that do work!

5 out of 5 stars Informative & practical, easy-to-implement activities!.......2007-04-12

My daughter will be attending a Montessori preschool in a couple of months [she's 2], and I wanted a practical manual that would introduce me to Montessori methods I could implement at home. This book is full of practical ideas, and is filled with activities and games thatare easy to implement in the home, and as a follow-up to preschool learning. The book covers topics like who is Maria Montessori, what is the essence of the Montessori method, how to use the Montessori method, planning your home around your child[child's bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, hall &stairs, games & activities] , exploring the neighborhood[in the backyard, in the park, in the countryside, in the city, going to school], & discovering about the world[the human family, journeys & explorations, the universe]. There are lots of practical & useful activities & games that one can implement with relative ease in the home or outside. The ideas in this book go a long way to helping stimulate a young child in line with the Montessori method.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro book.......2007-02-23

We bought this book to get us familiar with the Montessori method of teaching. Our son is about to start at a Montessori school and we wanted to get educated in the teachings as well. It's a great intro book and I especially found the exercises fun and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars great for moms, teachers, etc.......2007-02-12

I am a medical student, single parent and needed something to introduce me to Montessori instruction. I plan to enroll my 36 month old soon, but at this time, she is fine in the care of her grandparents and in the evenings, with me. Until she begins Montessori, I want to begin instilling some of the instructions. I ordered this book along with one other you will notice in my reviewed items. Both books are very good in my opinion, and all that I need. Even if I never enroll her in daycare, preschool, this is adequate. It gives great ideas that a parent or caregiver can share while with the child. Very good quality book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read For Parents.......2006-03-18

This is a good book for parents not just those with toddlers and preschoolers. It gives insight into the montessori method and really shows you the interelationship between how a child deveopls intellectually and physically. I wish that I had gotten it earlier because it has good insights into toddlerhood - tantrums and all. My son is 21/2 and we are hoping to send him to pre-school in September, so we wanted to get a guideline so to speak about what we should be looking for and the best kind of learning at his age. Also we were looking for new ways to engage him, so I'm anxious to try out the activities. He's in the 'I want to be independent stage' and after reading the book I have adopted some of its advice on how to help him acheive this. All in all I would say its a good buy, quite informative.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Montessori resource for the home.......2006-02-18

I was looking for a good way to teach my preschool son at home using some elements of the Montessori method. However, I wanted to go at my own pace and in a relaxed way. If you need a more regimented and structured Montessori method at home read Elizabeth Hainstock's books. Leslie Britton's book is well-written, concise and hits all the main points. I really like the games and activities designed for children from two to six. I am able to pick and choose and with home materials to teach my son at home. My son is two so he's only able to participate in a few exercises. Can't recommend it enough.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Healthy Relationships.......2007-10-06

I bought this book because I thought it would have tips on how to keep a marriage fun and exciting after a baby and maybe some tips on how to stay sane. But really this book just teaches you how to argue better. It had nothing to do with adjusting after such a big change. Well, there was maybe one chapter toward the end. The rest of it dealt with working through issues couples had regardless of their parental status.

5 out of 5 stars worth reading & good tools for prevention.......2007-07-10

I am a fan of John Gottman's work and know that it is respected and backed up with research. This book was definitely worth the read. I chose it to help prevent problems since we don't have any children yet. I haven't found anything else out there like it and would recommend it to friends. It's nice to know there are some guidelines out there for something as specific as spousal relationships after bringing home a baby.
They share some interesting cases and give specific examples that I found comforting and useful. For example, using humor when asking your husband to help with the dishes is much nicer than the sarcasm I would normally use.
Also, I was pleased to see that they inform their readers of the importance of their marital relationship before and after birth on a child's emotional & social development. Very compelling!
My only somewhat negative observation is about the exercises at the end of the chapters. They are a great idea, but I don't know if I could get my husband to participate. I'm just grateful to have their suggestions as I enter this stage of life and will introduce the info to my husband if the opportunity presents itself.

5 out of 5 stars This will SAVE your marriage! A Must READ!!!!.......2007-05-26

I am a certified labor doula and I bought this book so I could help my doula clients. I didn't realize how helpful it would be to me as well. I wanted to be able to provide my clients with some good information about how things might be after their baby is born. IT's not an easy transition in many ways. Although delightful, the roller coaster of emotions both parents go through can be rough and lead to divorce. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to a postpartum visit only to see my clients sitting separately. The dad not responding to mom's requests and mom not talking to dad but talking AT him. I know them because we met prenatally and seeing the transition is astounding. The once happy couple, who would do anything for each other while pregnant, is now sad. Dad is no longer focused on mom and wanting to make her happy. Mom isn't really doing much to make dad happy. They are two people living in the same home but they are slowly losing each other. Sleep deprivation and an overwhelming sense of responsibility on both parents is splitting them apart. What's worse is, we don't think about how this will affect the baby.

When couples think about how life will change when baby comes, they often think about how it will affect them. They don't think about how these changes will affect their baby; especially in the long run. This book describes those changes and offers suggestions and support on how to get through them. Dad's typically withdraw and I thought it was very normal. It is, however, if dad withdraws from baby and for significant periods, this will have a profound effect on the baby at the present time and in the long run. We must also think about the baby not just us.

I heard an MD speak about Bringing Baby Home last year. My son was almost 3 at the time. I was shocked when I learned about this transition and the stages that we go through. The biggest reason...we went through each transition! It was like I was reliving what happened. Learning that what we experienced was normal, that everyone goes through it but not everyone survives it. I was able to rejoice in the fact that we were in the last stage and we were going to survive.

It is a rough road this "Transition to Parenthood." Don't let people think you need to be happy when all you are feeling is frustration and resentment. BUY THIS BOOK! Read it in pregnancy and read it again after the baby is born. Go to the classes if you have a local educator. IF you want to survive your marriage or relationship after Bringing Baby Home, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Parents to Be.......2007-03-16

I'm 7m pregnant and my husband and I are extremely excited about our first baby, we are always looking for ways to keep our marriage on track. We are not experiencing any problems, We approach things in more preventative measures, it never hurts to keep educating ourselves. We have been reading this book and doing the excersises so when the baby does arrive and we run into issues we know how to tackle them. I recommend this book to anyone expecting. It serves as a great tool in relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward, realistic, and useful advice - a good read!.......2007-03-09

This book will definitely help couples keep their marriages on track post-baby if both spouses read it, and I'd recommend reading it BEFORE baby arrives and talking about it together. That way, when you're sleep deprived and your life is upside down due to having a new baby in your life and family, you might remember some of the good advice about how to communicate with each other and take care of each other. I really liked the many examples from couples studied, and the research-based nature of the recommendations. You probably won't be surprised at the "no-duh" nature of much of this book, since caring for your spouse and marriage really boils down to communicating well with each other, thinking about the other person, and treating them with respect and love. Kindness begets kindness! Nonetheless, it's helpful to read the data supporting the recommendations and to have these messages reinforced for you and your spouse. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource..........2007-07-17

I really enjoyed this book. This is a must for parents and teachers of a 6th grader (the grade level really does not matter). Categories covered are Language Arts, Geography/World & American Civilization, Fine Arts, Math, and Natural Sciences. What an excellent resource with key fundamentals in one book.

4 out of 5 stars MTEL saver.......2007-01-10

This is a great book with a wealth of information for upcomming teachers who have to take the teacher tests (this is how I found out about it). There is knowledge from standard English through music and the arts. It covers everything and is great for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of education.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Arts of this book only.......2005-09-09

This book was recommended to study for the CSET test for teacher licensing. I only bought this book to study for the Fine Arts and Music Section of the test. It is very easy to read, however, it is not a revised book like for grades 1 to 4. The reason I say this is because in the visual arts section, the paintings are not in color. I had difficulty trying to understand the lingo of art without seeing the color. Plus I am not a fan of art.

On page 239, the author talks about an African-American artist Henry O. Tanner and when the author writes "it would easy to imagine a story by looking at it"...I looked at it and still didn't understand the story. How can a regular person who has no experience in art be able to understand a painting?

On the same page, the author writes "light filetering in from the left makes a bright glow behind their heads, so that we tend to pay attention to this part of the painting." When I first look at the painting (black and white) I didn't notice the glowing heads...I noticed the father and son playing the banjo because they were only ones in black and white in the center of the picture! Many people have different ways of seeing art and how can an author says that "we tend to pay attention to..."?

5 out of 5 stars A great basic for adding to your child's education at home.......2005-09-06

I found this book and all of the Core Knowledge Series books to be very helpful. They allow parents to see what their child should be getting in each grade and add to the classroom education at home if needed. These books are full of common sense! My daughter has been in public elementary school as well as a private Episcopal Day School and the books are helpful in both circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!.......2002-11-11

This book has completely educated me on what my eleven-year old son needs to know for his 6th year. I have read the book and can say that if everyone in the country knew everything in this book we would all be better off. As a matter of fact, I know very few adults that know one quarter of what is in this book. This has motivated me to add this to my son's daily routine. We work it together and have wonderful mom-son time alone. A book you can't do without!

Book Description

John Sedgwick's acclaimed first two novels, THE DARK HOUSE and THE EDUCATION OF MRS. BEMIS, introduced readers to the rarified, monied enclave of Brahmin Boston, in which privilege and elitism, handed down from one generation to the next, comes at a price. John Sedgwick discovered for himself just how great that price can be when, while writing his second novel, he spiralled into a depression so profound that it nearly resulted in suicide.

This crisis provoked for John an analysis of the source of his malaise, and the realization that, to understand himself, he had to understand where he came from. The Sedgwicks are one of America's oldest families, dating back to 1635. Theodore Sedgwick, a close friend to George Washington and John Adams, played a crucial role in drafting the Bill of Rights; John Sedgwick was among the best–loved of the Union Generals; Catherine Maria Sedgwick was America's first bestselling female novelist; Ellery Sedgwick owned and edited The Atlantic Monthly magazine for thirty years; Edie Sedgwick, who died of a drug overdose in 1971, was a famous protégé of Andy Warhol; and Kyra Sedgwick is a well–respected Hollywood actress with her own hit series, The Closer.

In IN MY BLOOD: SIX GENERATIONS OF MADNESS AND DESIRE, John Sedgwick undertakes what is both a very personal journey of self–discovery, and a broader retracing of his family's evolution, the trail of which conveys a unique portrait of our own national character.

3 out of 5 stars ONE pic of Edie?.......2007-08-24

Since interest in Edie Sedgwick is no doubt what will attract most readers to this study of mental illness in the author's family, I'm more than a little surprised on how quickly John Sedgwick glosses over the one short chapter on his famous cousin. Granted, he never knew her and has little or no firsthand memory of what she was like in person. But still, one expects some new piece of trivia or information, some clue or tidbit that only an insider could know. Instead, we get the most perfunctory outline of her general downward trajectory, all of which grabs its content from the Jean Stein book on Edie. The picture section is only a few pages long, with most of the illustrations having already been published previously, while some intriguing characters from that tome are absent in this one. I was hoping on more of beautiful actress Rosamond Pinchot--a forshadowing of Edie from an earlier generation of Sedgwicks. Nothing on Rosamond and only one picture of Edie!

Having gotten to "know" them in the Stein book, I was also looking forward to hearing more from Suky and Saucie Sedgwick--Edie's sisters--, but as this is not a history of Edie's family exclusively, but a study of mental disorders, I suppose their inclusion might have been extranneous. Still, from atleast a commercial standpoint, I'm surprised that they're not even a blip on the radar in the photo section. "In My Blood" may be of help to people for whom depression is a family trait, but anyone expecting much on Edie or her immediate kin may be in for a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars a very interesting book by a very engaging author.......2007-05-14

"In My Blood" reminded me of how few generations it takes to get from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War to present times. John Sedgwick is a very engaging narrator of his family history. After experiencing an emotional breakdown and going into therapy, Mr. Sedgwick decides to delve into a treasure trove of family documents going back to Revolutionary times to examine the interplay of mental illness and success and creativity in his family. The house built by Theodore Sedgwick is still in the family, held in trust, full of old pictures, letters, and diaries. More documents from important members of the family are in library collections. This book could be stuffy and self-important, but John Sedgwick somehow manages to bring out the admirable, the deplorable, and the tragic in these generations in a loving, easygoing way that made me feel like I had sat down for a very interesting talk with a very nice person.

1 out of 5 stars Written Too Soon.......2007-05-14

It was difficult to get through this book. While no fault of the prose, it just seemed too soon for this writer to tackle the subject from a biographical standpoint. The insights and personal revelations therefore had a more superficial, anecdotal feel rather than the wisdom and depth that I had expected. I wish he had waited until he himself was further along; just as that fellow who wrote "A Million Little Pieces" could have waited, and we would have been spared all that flap about authenticity.

3 out of 5 stars Starts out strong... .......2007-03-10

I was very excited about this book, and the first half of the book lived up to my expectations.

The second half, the book fizzles and becomes quite boring, and feels as though the author is struggling to flesh out his book.

Nice read, not great though.

5 out of 5 stars Sedgwickiness.......2007-03-01

...That's the word that the author invents to describe the existential mood among his family members, a strange mix of Brahman pride and manic-depressive despair. What's so brilliant about this multi-generational memoir is that by the end of the book you know exactly what the author means by "Sedgwickiness" and the word lingers in your mind long after you close the pages. Nowadays, I catch myself thinking, "Well, that's a very Sedgwicky person," or "Oh what a Sedgwicky thought I just had." When an author changes the way you see the world, even by one or two clicks, he has achieved greatness.

I like the overall menu plan she does for each season, but, here in Hawaii, we don't really have "seasons". The concept is good, though.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook.......2007-09-10

I am the busy mother of a toddler and also a subcriber to Aviva's Six O'Clock Scramble weekly newsletter. I am also the owner of many, many cookbooks and this is my favorite one for easy weeknight meals. All the recipes are healthy, use fresh ingredients (no canned soups), and always turn out great. The recipes are so good that I even use several of them for entertaining (Spiced Chicken with Maple Butter Glaze and Warm Chicken Salad with Mixed Greens are two of our favorites). I highly recommend this book as well as the Scramble newsletter!

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook Ever!.......2007-08-23

This is the best cookbook I have ever tried (and I have tried a LOT!). Finally, a cookbook that is so easy to use, complete with online printable shopping lists, and the food tastes great! My picky 3 year old eats it, my gourmet-cooking husband loves it and I do too. The recipes are healthy, delicious and easy to prepare. Yes, you can prepare food fast without it being processed, who knew?

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Cookbook.......2007-08-17

I've used this cookbook every day for two weeks now and every recipe was a hit - even with my 2nd grader. The recipes are simple, healthy, quick and tasty. I love that there are lots of vegetarian options that don't involve obscure grains and tofu.

5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook for everyday use!.......2007-06-10

This cookbook has everything, from easy recipes you can throw together at a moments notice to more complicated but still fast and do-able recipes for get-togethers. I'm a novice at cooking and this cookbook gives me the confidence to cook more often!

Book Description

The six-year-old is a complex child, entirely  different from the five-year-old. Though many of the  changes are for the good -- Six is growing more  mature, more independent, more daring and  adventurous -- this is not necessarily an easy time for the  little girl or boy. Relationships with mothers are  troubled -- most of the time Six adores mother,  but whenever things go wrong, it's her fault. It  used to be, at Five, that she was the center of the  child's universe; now, the child is the center of  his own universe.

Parents need the expert  advice of Drs. Ames and Ilg during this difficult  year, to explain parent-child relations,  friendships with peers, what six-year-olds excel at, how  they see the world, what it feels like to be  entering the first grade. Children need patience and  understanding to help make this transition easier.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2007-08-30

This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician, and it helped me greatly. Like others have mentioned, there are some outdated references in the book, but it really doesn't matter. I found this book to be highly reassuring that most of the so-called crazy things my son had been doing are, in fact, normal six-year-old behavior. Reading this book is like having a chat with a wise, elderly relative. I am so grateful to the pediatrician for recommending it to me, and I have recommended it to countless other parents, all of whom love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, enlightening Book!.......2007-05-13

I recommend this book and any other in the series to those parents who want to know their children better. These books afford you the opportunity to view the world through your child's eyes and reassures you that he/she is on track and just "going through a phase"!
Well worth the read and the money!

5 out of 5 stars Your Six-Year-Old: Loving and Defiant.......2007-05-13

I have read all of this series of books beginning with Your Two-Year-Old: Terrible or Tender by Louise Bates Ames and Frances L. Ilg. (The books start with the one-year-old.) Their insight into the characteristics, behavior, and development of children is awesome. It seems sometimes that my daughter changes overnight from a loving, caring child into a "monster." I then go back and re-read and find comfort as she goes through this difficult or demanding stage that it is all very "normal"--that other children behave in the same way. The techniques given are so helpful and have worked every time when addapted to my daughter's personality. Dr. Ames states very clearly in the Foreword of each book that "ever child is an individual, different in many ways from every other child living--even from his or her own idential twin," and that no child is truly "average." Techniques are so simple, but in the heat of the problem something hard to think of on my own. Because of the difference at which children reach certain stages, I recomment that each book be read before the child reaches the age of a certain book. I urge every parent of one-year-olds through fourteen-year-olds to read these books and keep them handy for quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars Have never failed me yet..........2007-04-30

I found a few Gesell books in my MILs storage shed when my now [..]daughter was about three. I thought they were hilariously outdated, but read them anyway. However, they were DEAD on accurate about where she was developmentally and where she was going to be. Consistently, I found myself coming back to "You're Three Year Old" and "Your Four Year Old" and then finding and buying the other books as they went along.

Yes, much of the informations and attitudes are outdated, but understanding that some behaviors are age appropriate and better to deal with at another time is invaluable. Additionally, some advice never gets old.

My younger child is now about to be 6, and I've misplaced my books, but I value the information enough to buy it again.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful but outdated.......2007-01-10

The number of references to nose drops was kind of comical. The number of references to the mom staying home and the dad trying to make a man of his boy was less comical. Overall, I found the information very helpful, but I felt like I was getting advice from my grandma or something. Reading this in conjunction with "The Brat Stops Here" have helped me feel much better about the way my 6-year-old behaves. I don't know if I'll buy the book about Sevens.

Book Description

The painful, scary, but sometimes hilarious true story of how one guy
survived his parents’ divorce. And lived to sing about it.

The teenage years are tough as it is, but throw in the fact that your parents are divorcing and it’s like fuel on the fire.

It started with the poorly muffled fights in his parents’ bedroom. They just seemed to get worse, and it seemed that the inevitable would happen. Finally, it did and the family meeting was called. Jesse Butterworth had a hunch his folks were going to announce they were separating–but the two youngest boys were certain they’d be told they were going to Disneyland.

No such luck.

What happens when your world falls apart? How do you handle it when the two people you trusted most totally disappoint you…and seemingly destroy your already shaky life?

That’s what happened to Jesse Butterworth, and he tells his story with humor, honesty, and heart. He also shows how he figured out what to do with the emotions that come with divorce: anger, hurt, frustration, and loss. Picking up a beat up guitar, Jesse discovered that he could turn his misery into music and his pain into passion–becoming the Six String Rocketeer. In the process Jesse realized that the wounds that hurt you can become the wounds that heal you.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2007-04-05

Being from a Christian family and having my parents divorce when I was an adult, no one understood the impact that it had on me. Reading Jesse's book opened my eyes to the fact that I wasn't alone and that my feelings were normal! THANK YOU JESSE!

5 out of 5 stars Six String Rocketeer is fantastic.......2007-03-29

I loved it, this is a great book not only for youth but for parents to understand the dynamics of their children. I my suggestion don't hesitate. Snap this book up, it is a fantastic resource.

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful.......2007-01-03

Having known the Butterworth family many years ago, I found Jesse's insights and sense of humor very much like his father's. After reading it, I passed it along to my daughter-in-law (an adult child of divorce) and to a high school senior in our Christian school whose parents recently separated. Both found it to be very helpful with their individual struggles concerning their broken families. Great job, Jesse!

5 out of 5 stars Quick, read - engaging, inspiring and downright side-splitting..........2005-10-22

OK, maybe it's not that funny, but Jesse's humor certainly makes the painful story of a teenager's life in the midst of divorce much easier to read. I could hardly put the book down, and as soon as I did my teenage daughter picked it up and read it in two days! From the perspective of an adult who went through divorce at a young age, this book will help young people understand the complexities of divorce and help them cope.

Whether you are a teen going through the upheaval of divorce in your own life, or you have friends whose parents are divorcing, this book is a must read. Since we all have been touched by the effects of divorce, that should put this book on the best sellers list in no time! Read it for yourself and find out how passion in the midst of pain can transform a young mans broken heart into a whole heart overflowing with joy. BTW, Happy Late October Birthday, Jesse!

4 out of 5 stars A humorous and refreshing read for today's youth.......2005-10-01

It's estimated that since 1970, more than one million children a year have been directly impacted by divorce. Jesse Butterworth is one of those kids. In SIX STRING ROCKETEER, Butterworth candidly shares what it was like to discover that his parents were separating and eventually ending their marriage.

Butterworth's book reads like a high school memoir. It's filled with funny stories of growing up as a Christian with all its ironies and rather bizarre spiritual-meets-secular moments. He describes being part of the "God Squad" in school and the struggles and heartache of being a slightly overweight kid with the name Butterworth. (And in case you're wondering, yes, he has already heard all the jokes.) His personal stories are delivered in a humorous, deprecating manner that is both engaging and relatable.

He writes, "We were often referred to as the "God Squad" because we were all church kids. But it wasn't our deep love for the unlovely, our hours donated to charity, or our total abandonment to Jesus that set us apart. It was that we didn't cuss. We avoided every forbidden four-letter word by substituting words like frigging and schista and using phrases such as 'What the crap!' Also, if we ever said something negative about a person, we began by saying, 'Bless her heart,' and then followed it up with something like, 'but Janet is truly the most repulsive girl in the whole school.'"

Barely crossing 100 pages, the actual allusions to the breakup of his family are late in coming. In many ways, this isn't really a book about divorce --- it's a book about growing up as a Christian kid in a secular world and having your world rocked by an all-too-common reality. The actual moment where Butterworth finds out the gruesome news that his parents are separating doesn't hit until page 57. That's when readers discover his response of shock and grief. For the last half of the book, we learn of his emotional shutdown and recovery. We also learn how the tender gift of his father --- an old guitar --- provided a much-needed path for healing. Throughout, Butterworth acknowledges God and communicates vulnerably without being preachy.

Within the chapters, the author adds little pieces of trivia and humor. The book is packed with sidebars and inserts. There's a reference to a babysitter who wouldn't let the kids watch "The Smurfs" and a respelling of a "Pines" neighborhood sign to something far more amusing.

There's also a lots of random trivia, like the "Special Secret Mario Message" that reads: "Defeat Koopaling at the end of an Airshop (Worlds 1-7) while wearing either the Frog, Tanooki, or Hammer Brothers suit and receive a special message from the King." While only Super Mario fans will truly appreciate this, it adds color to the text and is a welcome addition for short attention span readers.

Throughout the book, Butterworth does a masterful job of keeping off-color humor and references to a G-rating. He hints and alludes without crossing any lines.

Overall, SIX STRING ROCKETEER is a refreshing read for today's youth. Recommended to anyone whose parents have been through a separation or divorce.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-09-21

The basic point seemed to be that if you pay attention and listen to your child all will go smoothly. This seems like a no brainer. Would you be buying the book if you weren't paying attention? The suggestions for discipline, although practical, were very basic. For example, have faith in your child, notice effort, listen for feelings, teach them to cooperate. Most parents already know these things.

5 out of 5 stars Parenting Young Children.......2007-09-09

This is a great aide in the many challenges of parenthood. I have found it useful over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Parenting Handbook.......2007-05-08

This handbook provides a great foundation for conducting discussions and introducing positive discipline practices to young parents. It is simply written with each chapter introducing a new skill. I have used it for the past several years and although I supplement with extra information from various sources, it remains the core of the Parenting Class that I teach.

5 out of 5 stars Still Using this Book!.......2006-03-17

Purchased this book about two months ago, when my son was five, and learned from it tremendously. Wish I had it before he was born so I could have understood his "misbehaviors" from the beginning. Better late than never! Every page of the book is easy to read and implement. The examples given were exactly what I was experiencing. The book shows you how to change and it's up to you whether you want to become a better parent. I hope you purchase it - it's worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a living success story.......2005-10-05

When I was a baby, my mom (against the advice of many people who thought they knew it all) took STEP classes. I grew up in a very loving household where discipline was constant and sensible, thanks in part to the skills my mom learned through these classes. Now that I'm grown and bringing up a little girl of my own, my husband and I are turning to these books to help us give her the best start we can toward being a good human.
