4 out of 5 stars Hurtling towards the series conclusion.......2006-03-25

Hooray for the return of Marc Hempel! I loved his minimalist style from "Sandman: The Kindly Ones," so it was a happy surprise to see his work for "The Eighth Sin," the first story in the "Lucifer: Crux" collection. My other rave would be for "The Yahweh Dance," where we find Elaine Belloc learning to harness her newly acquired demiurgic power under Lucifer's tutelage. In addition to being written as a smart and sassy teenager coming to terms with her semi-divinity, Elaine's appeal, to me, is that she provides a humanizing, compassionate foil to Lucifer's singleminded pursuits.

With regard to the review below, I agree that the stories collected here are setting up the series finale but I'd have to disagree on how "Crux" could have been organized any differently. Including subsequent issues would mean either breaking up the "Morningstar" story arc into two TPBs or putting out a massive TBP that contained all the stories from "Crux" as well as the "Morningstar" story arc. As much as I want to find out what happens next whenever I read "Lucifer," I don't think I could handle "Crux" AND "Morningstar" in the same volume. Likewise, I KNOW I wouldn't be able to handle "Morningstar" split into two TPBs. Can't wait until July when the "Morningstar" TPB comes out!

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't stand up on its own.......2006-02-18

The Lucifer series is set to end at 75 issues and this TPB is essentially the setup for the ending. As a bunch of individual stories its ok. As an integrated whole it is lacking. The book should have included a few more issues to balance the setup with some resolution. Otherwise, why give titles to the books, just call them Issues x-x.

5 out of 5 stars Another 5-Star Story.......2002-12-28

Collecting issues #7 - #12 of the on-going series Crux book 2 is even better than book 1. One of the reasons I've grown to love this series so much is that each character has a distinct personality and that aspect comes across very well.

The scene where the Atlantean group reveal one of their story-telling rituals was a great touch by Waid, et. al. Not only did it reveal something of the culture of Atlantis but gives added clues to each character's personality and the way they view their current situation - fighting for their survival against a foe they can neither understand nor communicate with. The question of what happened to species homo sapiens, while answered somewhat is only partially so. Those that are answered lead to yet more mysteries. Moral and ethical questions are also raised. If you could go back in time would you try to avert a disaster if you could? Would you still do so knowing that while you might save some people it would mean a much greater number would suffer and possibly die in the future that would not have done so before? These are only some of the dilemmas confronting the Atlanteans. And it is very interesting to see that the mysterious stranger is not the over-arching god-like being book 1 at first implies. Even he is surprised when some things do not turn out quite as he planned.

Crux is a scifi/fantasy fan's tale and highly recommended - particularly for people who enjoy character-driven stories. I also recommend Crossgen's other trade Negation v. 1 to learn more about the antagonists the Atlanteans struggle against (not to mention Negation has one of THE coolest, most charismatic Bad Guys ever seen in any comic series - Charon, the God-Emperor of the Negation Universe).

3 out of 5 stars Theology that sounds good, but just doesn't cut it........2005-03-27

[...]My continued thoughts:
It is interesting that many books that are designed to help us "weather the storm" today quote from Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone as authoritative. These authors quote from these two brothers, citing them as the "founders" of Christ's church. I would remind all Christians that Jesus founded his church, not Stone or Campbell. The church of Christ is not a denomination - the church of Christ includes every single Christian throughout history. You see, the term "church of Christ" is not a title, but a designation of relationship. When men believed and responded to the Gospel in Acts 2, they were "added to the church" by the Lord, not by a man's "church roll book" (cf. Acts 2:41). There's no difference in saying "the church of Christ," or "Christ's church," or "the assembly of the blood-bought, purified, sanctified, which has been translated into the Kingdom of the Son of His love" (cf. Colossians 1:13) Just one takes up more space on a marquee sign than another. I admit that there are men who consider themselves members of the Church of Christ, rather that the church of Christ. When they say "Church of Christ," they mean the Church of Christ [denomination] in contradistinction to the Baptist denomination, or the Presbyterian Denomination, etc., ad nauseum. This is a flawed understanding of the Scripture's teaching, though, on the Body of Christ. Ephesians 4 tells us that there is but one body, not many bodies, and that Christ is the head of that body. When you understand the body concept, you cannot call yourself a member of the Church of Christ and think that it means anything. There isn't a Church of Christ Room and Catholic Room and a Episcopalian Room up in Heaven; there is but a place for Christians. All men who are members of the church of Christ will be there; however, not necessarily everyman who counts himself a member of the Church of Christ will make a showing in Heaven.

This, then, begs the question - what does it take to become a member of the church of Christ. The saved are the church and the church is the saved, so the answer fits for both. Now, go get your Bible (seriously, go get it. How can you expect to judge books about the Bible if you won't compare them to Bible itself? OK, now that you have it, look at Acts 2). Let us, then, look at Acts 2 again and see how these Jewish men went from condemned Messiah-murderers to being "added to the church." Peter preached (i.e.., they heard the message). They believed his message that they were guilty sinners and this had separated them from Jehovah. Their desire unto repentance is shown in their distress over what they had done and their cry to Peter for a solution to their problem. Peter spells it out for them in 2:38f, saying, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself" (ESV). Everyone whom God calls to come to Him will come this way, via this promise, through repentance and immersion, according to the authority of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness/remission of his sins. That's what God's promise was. ... but wait a sec', I thought _JESUS_ was the "only way to the Father" (cf. John 14:6). Yes, that is true. In John 3:5 Jesus says that new birth, though water and spirit, is the only way to Heaven (because it is the way that He taught). Also, in Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus reminds His apostles that He has "all authority on heaven and on earth," and "therefore," they should "go," and 1) "make disciples of all ethnic groups" and, consequently, 2) baptize them into the possession of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit ... In Matthew Jesus gives the order to baptize believers in him so that they will become his possession and in Acts that's just what Peter does, he cites Jesus' authority in commanding baptism. It is upon baptism, after discipleship, that salvation occurs, it is then that we become His, it is then that are sins are forgiven. When someone has done this, in good faith, it is counted as righteousness (Romans 4:5).

Why is this man now saved? Because he did not trust himself for his salvation, because he did not trust in any pastor or preacher to "add his name to the roll," but he trusted in God to save him. Immersion is nothing to earn salvation, as it's only physical value _might_ be taking some dirt off your body (cf. I Peter 3:21). Immersion is Jesus' way, immersion is the apostles' way -- repentance and immersion unto the remission of our sins must be our way.

For those of you who have followed Jesus' [only] way, I'll see you in Heaven one of these days. If you have questions about this, though, please feel free to email me (ledsi@cox.net) and we'll talk about it. I'm interested in sharing the Gospel, and the Gospel is that Jesus died on our behalf to satisfy the justice of God, the promise of this salvation is to you and me and once we have it we can walk in the light, basking in the grace and mercy of God. And as we walk, he is faithful to that promise and the blood of his son continually cleanses us from our sin, because of our fellowship (relationship) with God as His people, a relationship we gained at our immersion.

I don't want to be immersed into Alexander Campbell's church, or John Wesley's, or Martin Luther's. I want to be immersed into Jesus' church, the church of Christ.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Church of Christ "lifers".......2003-11-27

I'm writing this review with 20 years of direct experience with the target audience of this book. That is, the Church of Christ "lifer", the person who was born and raised in the body of churches known as the non-instrumental Churches of Christ. This person's family history likely goes back several generations with the Churches of Christ.

This person has a lot of his/her worth as a Christian based on being part of the "heritage" of the "restoration movement". And that means being a Christian within the non-instrumental Churches of Christ.

This book is about helping these people deal with change. In particular, changes within the Churches of Christ. Apparently in decades past it was possible to walk into a Church of Christ anywhere in America and know what to expect, like ordering a hamburger at McDonalds. But things are changing now, and many in the Churches of Christ are becoming disoriented by these changes and the increasing diversity among Church of Christ congregations.

To deal with this, the author focuses the reader on the core of the Gospel and what it means to be a Chirstian. He does a great job of this throughout most of this book. The idea being that diversity is not necessarily bad as long as we focus on the crux of Christianity. Then we can be different and all get along. Sounds great to me!

Though a great read, I gave this book only three stars for the following reasons.

1. The author blames these changes on "post modernism". Blaming problems in Christian churches on "post modernism" is starting to get cliche. Change happens all the time, and the religious landscape in America has been volitle throughout most of its history. What did church leaders blame change on before "post modernism"? I forgot.

Is it possible that some of these changes in Churches of Christ are occuring because church members, like all of us, have access to more information that ever before and through their own studies have determined that some of the Church of Christ teachings are little more than traditional dogmas with little scriptural support? (To his credit, the author does sort of lead the reader to that without actually coming out and saying it.)

2. After doing a great job of focusing the reader on the crux of Christianity, the auther then decides at the end that weekly performance of the Lord's Supper is a "non-negotiable" part of being a Christian. What does "non-negotiable" mean exactly?

And, where in the New Testament is there any explicit directive concerning the frequency with which a Christian must partake of the Lord's Supper? There isn't. So after all is written and read, the author showed me that he really hadn't progessed in his thinking as far as I had thought.

Still, for the target audience this is one of the best books out there.

5 out of 5 stars The Crux of the Matter.......2002-11-08

The authors provide a stimulating discussion of the need for reassessment and redirection within churches of Christ. Beginning with the perceptive observation that the church most of us know came of age in the 1950's, they highlight the growing sense of disorientation felt by many in an increasingly post-modern world.

Before suggesting directions and solutions, they provide helpful perspective by taking a giant step backward and tracing our modern roots from the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century through the American Restoration Movement of the 19th century. In doing this they demonstrate that at least some of our perspectives and distinctive doctrines were influenced by people and historical forces much more recent than the first century.

After that, the authors get to "the crux of the matter," retrace the current crisis of identity, diversity, and change in the church, and attempt to offer some directions for the future. Chief among these is a call to re-focus attention on the "core" of the gospel: "the story of our creator God's actions to save us from sin and death, culminating in the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Christ." This focus, they submit, provides the best platform for biblical interpretation, individual growth and congregational unity.

On the issue of biblical interpretation, for example, the authors contend that good interpretation acknowledges the core as a "center of gravity, allowing that core to govern both the reading of the text and its application." This approach de-emphasizes a search for "rules" and "patterns" and re-focuses on broader aspects of the text: purpose, theme, genre, context, and principle.

The authors acknowledge that the book is not intended as a fully-developed theology, but as a starting point for further thought and discussion. From that standpoint, I would highly recommend it as a very interesting and thought-provoking read.

4 out of 5 stars Good discussion.......2002-01-30

This is a good discussion of a complex problem in Churches of Christ. I mean, just where are we going? Where did we come from? Overall, the discussion was adequate and worthwhile. Sometimes, it seems that conclusions are reached simply to be consistent with our heritage - not that that is all bad - but sometimes other conclusions are just as valid. Worth the time to read.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and encouraging.......2001-05-12

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this clearly written, thought provoking book. It was especially meaningful to me because I know and respect Dr. Foster. Not growing up in the church of Christ, the brief history of the church's beginnings was very helpful in bring me up to speed and the authors made clear and easy to follow conclusions about why our history is vital in understanding the crises we face today. The ideas of pre-modern, modern, and post-modern (which can be difficult to grasp, at least for me) were expained in terms that made them obvious. It was not only informative, it was challanging. The authors managed to appeal to both the "traditionalists" and the "progressives" with out riding the fence themselves. As a post-modern woman in a rather conservative church, I was surprised that the authors were able to make me see the other side of the story (that of the more traditional member) and give me a larger respect for them. Their style of writing is so easy to read and their hearts seem to flow through their words. I recommend this book highly to anyone in the church of Christ who is looking to understand the problems we seem to be facing today. The book is a quick read and is not written in an "academic" style that might seem off-putting to a layperson. It is so relevant that I am hopeful we, at our church, will be able study it in a bible class in the near future.

The agents of the Office for the Exploration of the Past-Pastplor-work to thwart Crux and other sociopaths, criminals, and do-gooders who would jeopardize the fragile peace so hard won. Their missions spanning a wide array of vividly imagined futures, Pastplor's agents protect the past from those who would dare to meddle. The time-travelers are hailed as saviors of humanity-but cannot escape the feeling that they're on the wrong side of the war.Schemes, betrayals, adventure, and satire blend in this delightful debut novel in the spirit of Poul Anderson's classic Time Patrol stories and Fritz Leiber's The Big Time. Albert E. Cowdrey is a bold new voice in science fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Time Travellers Against Tyranny.......2007-07-28

This is a story about a future present totalitarian state where conformity, arrest, and torture are commonplaces. The plot revolves around the creation of a wormhole device that enables time travel...a threat to the existing order of things. What follow are multiple attempts by various persons to go back in time to prevent a war that occasions the future present police state.

The characters are reasonably well-developed, though at times they border on the cartoonish. We do see a few human touches intermixed with internecine power struggles and cruelty, and the heroes are sufficiently imperfect that most readers will probably be able to relate to them.

The ending gives some satisfaction, though framed and underlined by much of the tragedy that suffuses this novel. It's a good read, though not a spectacular one.

I recently received a review copy of this book, although a Christian, I'm not what you would call an every Sunday Church goin kina guy. Armed with basic knowledge I cracked open the book, finding to my surprise no preface but a rather long introduction. Not that the intro was bad, I simply prefer a short preface outlining its goal.
I was pleased at the first chapter, written in a simple school text book style, as that of a teacher's addition. Each verse was complemented with and explanation sometimes in great length others times not much at all, but coming together well for the altogether comprehension of the subject. The book over all is written in this educational manner and nicely done. However there are times when it seems to flow off the given subject into another area, but to my chagrin, would make its way back, having offered up an entirely more profound understanding of what the scriptures were saying then it would have if having simply stayed its course (just when you think your lost, it pulls you right back in.)
The book flows smoothly form one subject to the next, I like that. The language used is simple; no overwhelming big words you need to break out the dictionary for. Then again there is one of two complaint I have, and that's with repetitiveness. The book is very repetitive even within the explanations themselves and I find it rather annoying and unnecessary. But I have to confess, that with younger persons or even adults it's often a necessary evil in teaching, to bring home a point or as said, beat it into their heads. Second complaint is poor editing, I also tend to believe a great deal more information was cut in the process, and it a shame that a book of this quality that obviously contains vast knowledge in years of study has been treated so lightly.
As I told you earlier, I have basic bible knowledge, so some of the things I read in this book were like a slap in the face, I never heard of such interpretations before, ever.
At first I thought "what a nut case" but in reading on, it all came together making perfect sense, and what I had previously believed actually made no sense according to the bible scriptures themselves. I must confess I was a rapture believer prior to absorbing this book, but now I'm free of this deception thanks to Mr. Crux. Not only am I free of the lie, but all those years I was not attending church, I feel I made up for in this one book. From this single book "Beguiled by rapture deception" I have gained more knowledge and understanding of bible then the majority of my friends who have attended churches on a regular basis their entire lives. Few books offer such profound insight as this one. I have been around a long time and know a best seller when I read it, and this has best seller potential written all through it. I know the bias's that exist in the industry between the self and traditional publishing market, and it's to bad because every so often a self published book arises that demands the same recognition and attention of those quality traditional published materials and beguiled by rapture deception certainly is one of them.
I'll put my reputation on the line and say "if you stock this book I guarantee it will sell."
No store wants deadwood sitting on their shelves, space is valuable and something that isn't selling is costing money. This book however I guarantee if presented in view of patrons along with the other new releases will fly off the shelves before many others do. I would also encourage everyone who reads it to support it on the internet thru advertising in homepages, websites, links etc.
The cover carries the title of the Christian theme...as the serpent beguiled eve...the tile reflects the books content as does the picture...the font is elegant being easy to read...containing the crimson word "Rapture" in grabbing attention as a notable sine of warning. The cover while simple does the job in supplying all the necessary elements in proper cover design. While the cover picture could have been more hi-tech and possibly questionable or more subdued as in a Garden of Eden theme, I don't feel it could have been any better in describing the books intent and subject.
I recommend this book to everyone because the value of the content out weighs everything else. I myself plan on giving copies to others as my personal witness, so I too can gain those works Mr. Crux pointed out, that I may be clothed in works not being found naked and ashamed having none when the Lord returns, as everyone one should strive to do the same. Give a copy as your personal witness.
This has been my spin what's yours?

    Book Description

Millennia ago, the Atlanteans were the self-styled mentors to the newborn race known as homo-sapiens. But when a mysterious cataclysm plunged Atlantis and its people beneath the waves, six - and only six - awoke one thousand centuries later to find their island city forgotten and in ruins, their brothers and sisters caught in an unshakable slumber...and Earth devoid of all life. Now the one, simple question that drives them is this: Whatever happened to the human race? Cruz combines the most primal and exciting elements of super-hero comics with imaginative science fiction reminiscent of Isaac Asimov`s Foundation and Larry Niven`s Ringworld.

These people are endowed with superhuman abilities by a mysterious figure, and must search for what is actually going on, and what they can do about the cataclysm.

    4 out of 5 stars One of Crossgen's Best..........2003-03-27

A very under-rated book, while other Crossgen titles seem to get more press, this one truly delivers. Atlantis, long grist for any dreamer's mind, is given a fresh look here. This isn't the Submariner's Atlantis, blue-skinned people living in a fantastic underwater city in the depths of the ocean, but rather people actually dealing with the calamity that destroyed their island, as well as adjusting to life some 100,000 years in the future. Alright, it isn't very realistic, and the parts that deal with Atlantean society are, for me, anyway, the most interesting, but one has to keep in mind that it's a comic book. It would have been nice to see them awaken to this time, when opinion seems to be evenly divided whether Atlantis is fact or fiction, but setting it faroff in the future also gives it an ironic twist to it, where they are left wondering what kind of civilization we may have once had. Honestly, the book doesn't even need all it's superhero team trappings, it succeeds just on at it's terms of being a book about Atlantis and it's characters, but, being a comic, one has to realize that much of that comes with the territory. Mark Waid is a great writer who's words often seen in a comic book, and his characterizations are dead on, a very literate comic book writer. Steve Epting has long been one of the most under-rated artists in comics, in my view one of comics's best, and his work on the Avengers a few years ago was one of the high points of the industry during the nineties. Anyone sick of the current Japinese anime art style will love his work here, few artists can master actual human expressions as Steve Epting does. Anime may have some strengths, but expression certainly isn't one of them. As I said, I would have preferred a little more of Waid and Epting's take on Atlantis, Atlantis Rising is good enough that it doesn't need to cater to the typical comic book conventions, but it is an intelligent, well written book that should keep people hooked, not only to the mystery of what happened to Atlantis, but the rest of civilization.

5 out of 5 stars Earth and Atlantis ...Where it all Began.......2002-12-27

At the time of this review Crux and Negation are my personal favorite Crossgen titles. Crossgen has done a wonderful job of creating a very fascinating universe. It's our universe and Crux's events take place on Earth, albeit many millenia in the future. Not without cause is this title named Crux for Crossgen has promised Earth and the story told here will be...well, the crux of the Crossgen universe.

We are introduced to Atlantis and 9 key figures - the 7 Atlanteans, one human and a mysterious stranger who awakens them from stasis but refuses to tell them why. The stranger grants them an orange sigil-mark (in marked contrast to the yellow and red sigils of characters in other CG comics). And thus the mystery begins. Why did Atlantis drown? What happened to the other transitioned Atlanteans? Where has homo sapiens - the race the Atlanteans were mentoring in its infancy - gone? And why are they being attacked by strange bug-like creatures?

I agree this book is the one to give to a comics-reader who likes team superhero books as in one sense Crux is such a book. That is, it features characters wielding powers not available to ordinary humans even though these characters wear normal clothes (no spandex or capes here). Of course, by that broad definition the majority of Japanese Anime also falls into the superhero genre. Nonetheless, this team doesn't go around fighting crime. There is a depth to the story as hints are dropped of a larger epic storyline which is a feature that runs through all of Crossgen's comics. You do not need to read any other comic or graphic novel in the Crossgen universe if you don't wish. Crossgen has taken care to make sure each story can be understood and enjoyed alone. But if you choose to read some of their other comics or trades (I HIGHLY recommend Negation) a story-arc on the scale of an Epic emerges (and I do mean Epic with a capital "E").

In one sense this very coherent world has some of the same elements that make me love Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. As the story unfolds in Crux you begin to see true depth to the history, myths and legends that shaped the Atlanteans, Earth and interest is piqued in the mystery of missing humanity. Characterization is particularly strong. I got a very distinct sense of each members own personality, likes, dislikes, etc.

Here is the chance to see one conception of the beauty and history of Atlantis (the art is breathtaking - Atlantis definitely looks "Atlantean") with fascinating characters struggling in a world that has drastically changed from the one they knew. Any fantasy or science-fiction fan should give this graphic novel a shot.

5 out of 5 stars CrossGen's superheroes (admit it, guys...).......2002-12-12

Although CrossGen Comics has made a point of not doing any "superhero" comic books, Crux is definitely the book to give to your average superhero fan. It has all the elements of a superhero team -- a diverse group of people, each with a unique super power, thrust together into harrowing circumstances with the fate of the world resting on their shoulders.

Of course, like everything CrossGen does, this book has a twist. The "superheroes" in question are survivors of the lost city of Atlantis. Millennia ago, half of the Atlaneans underwent some great transformation while the rest went into cryogenic sleep on Earth to guide the developing race of humans. In the far future, seven Atlanteans are awakened to find Earth deserted, its final fate being some sort of galactic amusement park.

The question is, what happened to mankind, what happened to the other Atlanteans and what are these strange monsters called the Negation that attack the remnants of Earth?

As far as high-octane superhero mystery goes, you can't beat it. The characters are distinctive while never falling into stereotypes -- twins bicker but their powers are only strongest when together, the muscular "tough guy" of the group is really something of a pacifist. And as the title implies, this book seems to be where the keys to unlocking the mystery of the CrossGen universe lie. It also ties in very closely with another CrossGen book, "The Negation," which is also a spectacular read.

5 out of 5 stars Nebulum: A Crux of Hope.......2007-05-24

I really enjoyed this first book. It's an excellent beginning for a new author and I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

I am eager to find out what happens to the King and his battle to win freedom for the people. Will Belgrave return to his own world, or will something, or someone, keep him in Tanarad? I shall be looking for the next book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great action-packed fantasy........2007-04-06

If you like fantasy books like Narnia and Lord of the Rings, you'll love this book....actually it will be a series of books. There are not a lot of different characters you must remember, so it's an easy read. It's full of twists and turns in the plot...with a pleasant surprise adventure thrown in here and there. Since the main character is taken out of our time and place, it's a "believable" fantasy storyline. I read the book in (almost)one sitting...I just couldn't put it down...I can't wait until the second book in the series comes out.
