5 out of 5 stars Star Wars Book.......2007-01-11

I think this is the best book in the Corellian Trilogy. Second best is Assualt at Selonia (book #2). If you are thinking of reading the Corellian Trilogy skip the first book (Ambush at Corellia) the opening of Assualt at Selonia has a "What Has Gone Before" that adequately summarizes what was in the first book.

4 out of 5 stars a solid end to a solid trilogy.......2006-09-14

Thus concludes a fairly solid Star Wars Trilogy. Showdown at Centerpoint is the concluding volume in the Corellian Trilogy. The story we have so far is that Leia and Han, along with their children, a Wookiee, and a couple of droids went on a diplomatic mission to Han's homeworld of Corellia and became entangled in the civil unrest where the main faction is led by Thracken Sal-Solo, Han's cousin and a general bad guy. Thracken claims to have a Starbuster, a weapon which nobody has seen but that has already destroyed two planets. Yes, another Super Weapon. The civil unrest encompasses the entire Corellian system and through kidnapping and hiding, the Organa-Solo family, along with Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, and Mara Jade, are working separately to stop the Starbuster from destroying the next planet on a list of targets and to restore stability to the region.

Joining together and splitting apart our heroes will travel to the strange Centerpoint Station, which may have everything to do the troubles. They will join with Selonians and the Drall, two non-human races in the Corellian system, and there is love and loss, lots of action, the rising importance of the Solo children, and the chance to save the Republic once again. The ending of Showdown at Centerpoint is a bit rushed, but taken as part of a trilogy this book and the trilogy is a satisfying Star Wars experience. While these books would not stand up with the best of Matthew Stover or Karen Traviss, this trilogy rises above the majority of Star Wars novels. It contains all of the action and fun of the movies and had George Lucas decided to use the stories of Roger MacBride Allen, this Star Wars trilogy would be just as successful as what was already filmed.

5 out of 5 stars Show up for the Showdown.......2006-05-02

`Antone's eyes bugged out, and his jaw dropped open. It was at least a full five seconds before he was able to speak. "He's cranky? He's the - he's the only one who can - who can - " Atone gestured frantically at the control panel. "The starbuster is going to fire in an hour, and you tell me he's cranky?" '

Showdown at Center Point, is sadly the last book of this Star Wars trilogy. Everything is moving to the edge of disaster as the New Republic crew is trying to figure out who, or what, is blowing up stars. Anakin Solo is getting in trouble (once again), Han and Leia have to deal with squabbling Selonians, Dralls and humans. Han's evil cousin is back once again and making really big trouble. Lando Calrissian and Luke Skywalker enter Center Point and are nearly killed but finally figure out what in the heck it really is! Will they be able to save the next star on the list for destruction (along with the twelve million people on the planet next to it). You'll just have to read it to find out.

The beloved Corellian Trilogy is an excellent book for all Sci-fi fans, a must-read continuation of the Star Wars story for its fans and has great action for those who just want to be entertained. The author does a great job of making it clear where everyone is and what is going on, as the action takes you from place to place. He gives a great description of each new area or character you meet or hear about, and there are plenty of really hilarious moments where everything just goes wrong. This trilogy is hardly even boring with great action moments and moments where the character lives hang by a thin thread. It is one of the best action books I've ever read, a little bit better than "Harry Potter" with a sci-fi twist. Those who would really like this book/ trilogy is anyone who likes Star Wars in general, or anyone that likes sci-fi. Even if you don't know all the Star Wars characters and plots, the book does a great job of introducing you to it all. Even young kids can read this book and be entertained; same thing goes for adults. I would recommend this book to almost anyone who is even slightly interesting in reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good conclusion.......2005-08-08

I really liked this book. It wrapped everything up well. Since I had ready the NJO books already I knew who would make and not, but overall it was good series and did explain some background for events in the NJO. It is definetly worth you time.

3 out of 5 stars Above average conclusion to an above average trilogy.......2003-08-10

The conclusion to the Corellian Trilogy is the best of the trilogy. The story really takes off and the action keeps the reader moving through the story at a good pace. All our heroes are in their prime ready to once again defeat the galaxy's evil. The biggest problem with this book is the ambiguity of the bod guys. Han Solo's cousin is just a front, and tis Triad are the real baddies but not much is really known or said about them. The author just kind of leaves them hangin so to speak. My other criticism deals with Anaking who is way to babyish in the beginnin gof the book and simply too sophisticated in the conclusion. OVerall however, this is a above average trilogy in the Star Wars universe.

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars Book.......2007-01-11

I believe Showdown at Centerpoint (book #3) is the best book in the Corellian Trilogy although you should definitely read Assualt at Selonia (book #2) so you know what is happening. If you are thinking of reading the Corellian Trilogy skip the first book (Ambush at Corellia) the opening of Assualt at Selonia has a "What Has Gone Before" that adequately summarizes what was in the first book.

3 out of 5 stars Middle Book Syndrome.......2006-08-13

Ambush at Corellia was a surprisingly good Star Wars novel. It was set in the timeline at a place where quite a few of the surrounding novels were sub-par. The set up has Han, Leia, their children, Chewbacca, and the droids on a diplomatic mission to Corellia, Han's homeworld. Corella is a star system and planet which is coming apart at the seams and rife with factions sowing the seeds of rebellion and revolution and uprising. The novel did something fairly remarkable for a part of a trilogy: It told a complete story while broadening the overall story of the trilogy. I was impressed and I enjoyed reading the novel. I anticipated reading the second volume, Assault at Selonia, and hoped for the same level of quality and storytelling.

I was let down and satisfied at the same time. Roger MacBride Allen is a capable writer and he has an easy to read style that moves forward at a good pace. I had hopes that he would be able to avoid Middle Book Syndrome, a condition where an otherwise good novel does very little to tell an independent story and serves only as a link between Books One and Three. Unfortunately, Assault at Selonia caught a nasty case of M.B.S. There is quite a bit going on, but very little narrative advancement. I will give a brief overview: Han has been captured by his cousin Thracken Sal-Solo, the presumed leader of the Human League. Sal-Solo is threatening the peace of Corellia and has something that can cause a planet to explode. Another superweapon, sure, but this one is less the point of the story than in previous novels. Leia is also held captive, though in a different location. Luke is with Lando trying to decide how to get information to the Republic to help the situation as Sal-Solo has caused Hyperspace flight into the system to be impossible. Throughout the novel we learn more of what is going on behind the scenes and the characters are moved around the board so that every character is in a different place at the end than he/she was in the beginning, but there was no story thread here.

This novel would be completely lost if it wasn't tying itself to Book Three. There is no resolution, no real narrative advancement. Pad a few chapters into the first and third novels and this book could be completely absorbed with nobody being the wiser. That's what I mean by Middle Book Syndrome. It is a bridge between two books, but doesn't advance much and doesn't add essential story points that couldn't be covered elsewhere. This is a common problem with trilogies.

Though I may be coming off as being negative, I did like the book. When I finish the trilogy I expect that it will be one of the better Star Wars stories that have been written. MacBride Allen is doing a very good job here and taken as a three book cycle I think the work will be strong. Taking the second book alone, it doesn't hold up as a single novel. Other second volumes may have the same story flaws, but in this instance there was a certain obviousness about it, that Assault at Selonia could have been more and failed to live up to its promise. Still, it is worth reading the trilogy even if volume two is mostly filler.

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars - Assault at Selonia .......2005-11-16

This is the second book of the three. It started off exciting and then it started to slow down. This also is not very of an emotional book even some parts were so stupid that it made me laugh. It is confusing throughout most of the book even though you find all of the answers at the end. This book also keeps you hanging because it is #2 out of the 3. In some of the pages there is so much description of a room or a building that you can skip a few pages and not miss any crutial information. THis is a good book. Personally I think the first book is better.

4 out of 5 stars Better than average and better than book one.......2005-08-08

The action definetly picked up in this book. There were a lot less typos in this book also which made it better to read. I would recommend this book to any Star Wars fan.

4 out of 5 stars Commendably better than the first.......2005-06-19

With enough slick to grease a Hutt uphill to the abbatoir, Assault at Selonia delivers the goods you've been waiting for.

Gone with the wind are the chapter-long conversations, slow pacing and stuttering Frozian from the previous book. New characters, new factions and some seriously good scenes start advancing the plot in ernast. Because it's becoming apparent who's really pulling the strings is now a game of guess who, and with the lives of five worlds and the entire sector on offer, the insurrectionists have the ability to target your sun---almost anywhere.

Solo's older cousin, thankfully shown on the neat cover front, has undertaken the biggest bluff in his dismal career, and that makes the critter bursting with quality. Not another beautiful villainess or strategic admiral or pompering warlord wannabe. What we have here is an everyday government administrator, hungering for the return of the harmonious Imperial system, seeing his chance to seize power in the galaxy's fattest fraud---a man who likes his drink, likes nonhumans even less, who's dancing events with what little he has.

And this makes Sal-Solo's character even better: an all-or-nothing risk on scant resources and time.

Skywalker is back in action, and shows it. He'll be even better in the next book. Uninjured as he was in Children of the Jedi, Planet of Twilight and New Rebellion, he's more talker than walker but it's a good change. And who better than wild card Calrissian, the poor fella we hardly see in books, considering he's a sacred movie character and all. Calrissian is shown as the thinker in the trilogy, needling the intrigues into wearable apparel while of course dealing with the bickering droids. Threepio provides the trilogy's best humour here, as he explains where he got his Bakuran info.

Characterisation couldn't be better. The Selonian Dracmus is fun and distinctive, and her partnership with Solo makes for some truly good performances. Solo himself seems to be written very well, and even slightly differently to others, not for the worse.

Storyline wise, inexplicable technology has sealed off the Corellian system from communications and hypertravel. The New Republic's fleet assets are not in a current shape to send taskforces all over the Monopoly board, so why not borrow one from Bakura and send Skywalker as ambasador? It's a great full circle 14yrs ago when last he was there. It's a book of partnerships, actually; Skywalker and Calrissian, Organa Solo and Jade, Solo and Dracmus. Condensing and scattering the cast allows for deeper characterisation and individual skills to display.

Enter the Bakurans and the exceedingly dangerous Admiral Hortel Ossiliege . . . and by the pitious breath of Vader, quiver the Ssi-Ruuk should they come back. Four ships against the unknown might of what lies at Corellia, and for Ossiliege and his scene-ending liners, pity the rebels more.

Allen shows his writing prowess with all the subtlety of a Sithing shadow. He has a core cast of pre-teens overseen by their alien tutors on one leg, and in the other slap you have the familiar adult movie cast. And he actually manages to pull it off. This trilogy is readable by kids and every bit for mature adults, the way Simpsons does. Seriously, I Malak you not. Prose, verbose and structure is nothing fancy but it doesn't need to be here; and with all the travelling the trilogy was written during, a fine balancing act indeed.

Perhaps the downsides are the overly long chapters as the first book, and the speculatory conversations the characters engage in. Because Sal-Solo can't be the only mastermind, and whoever it is has absconded with most of the sector's naval ships. Which means someone, somewhere, has a fat fleet ready to spring.

The finale culminates in more discoveries and questions, a battle names the title, and a brief but poignant demonstration of the ticking cloak for the New Republic.

A trade summit on Corellia brings Han Solo back  to the home world he left many years before.  Arriving on the distant planet with Leia, their children  and Chewbacca, Han finds Corellia overrun with  agents of the New Republic Intelligence and finds  himself part of a deceptive plan whose aim not even  he understands. 3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2007-05-22

The Corellian Trilogy was OK for post-Return of the Jedi books - a good amount better than the Jedi Academy Trilogy, but not as good as The Thrawn Trilogy.

But instead of those series, I highly recommend the following 5-star novels that are extremely relevant to the film series:

Cloak of Deception (Star Wars)
Shadow Hunter (Star Wars: Darth Maul)
Labyrinth of Evil (Star Wars, Episode III Prequel Novel)
Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Shadows of the Empire (Star Wars)

4 out of 5 stars a very solid opening.......2006-07-11

Ambush at Corellia is the first volume of the Corellian Trilogy by Roger MacBride Allen. Han Solo is headed back to his home planet of Corellia for the first time in decades to attend a trade summit with his wife, the Chief of State of the New Republic, Leia Organa-Solo. It will be something of a rare family vacation as they are taking their children, Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin. Corellia is nominally part of the New Republic, but it is a planet (and system) at risk of falling apart and falling away. Years of forced rule have made many there fairly insular. Before they leave for Corellia, Han is warned by a member of New Republic Intelligence (NRI) that Corellia is not safe and that there is a mission in place. Han could support the mission by acting in such a way to make people suspicious of him. This is Han's normal behavior, so there isn't much of a stretch. The agent who warned Han is nearly killed upon arrival in the Corellian spacelanes. The Millenium Falcon is ambushed by a staged attack perhaps meant to frighten Leia.

Once they set foot on Corellia Han and Leia see that the situation is much worse than they had anticipated. The entire star system is on the verge of imploding (meant as a societal term, not a a physical stellar term). The risk to the New Republic is great because there are not strong ties keeping the fledgling government together. It has only been 14 years since Return of the Jedi. As the novel progresses we see just how big the threat is to the New Republic and to the Corellian system.

Happily, the nature of this threat is quite a bit different from other Star Wars novels. We are not faced with the "superweapon", not exactly, and it is more of a political threat than a galactic threat. There is still action and there is still intrigue, but Ambush at Corellia has a different feel to it than many other Star Wars novels. It doesn't "feel" like the same old same old, and I've read at least sixty of them by now. Roger MacBride Allen has done a good job setting up the trilogy. The scope of the story is enlarged and we get a glimpse of what is to come, but we don't know exactly how this is going to play out. Sure, our heroes are very likely to live, but we don't know what is going to happen to them or what is going to happen to Corellia. I had one of those "bad feelings" that this was going to be a crappy trilogy like the Black Fleet Crisis, but I'm very happy to be wrong. This was a solid opening novel. I hope the following two novels expand on the story and improve on a solid beginning.

-Joe Sherry

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars - Ambush at Corellia.......2005-11-16

This book is another one of my favorites. When books come in a 3 set, it makes the reading funner. This book started off slow but it started to get more and more exciting. This book isn't very emotional when I read it, though some parts made me laugh. Happily no one died. The plot is pretty confusing but near the end you understand it all. It did end up hanging because there is another book. 5 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Luke, We Need You Here !!.......2005-11-02

I was browsing through the library Audio Books section looking for something light to keep my mind active while I rested my eyes, and chose this two-cassette set more for the small size than becauseI knew about either the author or the reader. To my surprise, I found it held my interest. The action takes place after the original Star Wars movie, but the same cast of heroes battle the same forces of evil, so the elaborate visual effects are easily imagined. I'm looking forward to listening to the other two books in the trilogy.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but kind of slow.......2005-08-01

I have to admit is was a slow read. This could partly be because I read it 10 years after it was published and after reading the NJO series. Overall it is an above average book and I recommend reading it because it does play some part in the events of the NJO. (note to the publisher: this has to be the worst proofreading I've ever seen. I lost count of the typos and misspelled words at least in my copy.)

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be.......2007-09-05

This sometimes confusing comic should have had a great story. The idea was a good one. I am sorry to say that it didn't inspire the imagination or hold interest for long. Don't get me wrong. As comics go, this is okay. I read it completely through once, but will never feel the need to pick it up again. Die hard fans beware: You will not be falling in love with this one.

This is a great book. Luke and Mara are wonderful together, and 'Union' is a cute story about their wedding. Sometimes the pacing is a bit confusing, but overall a great comic.

I LOVE this book! Great illustrations. I like having all the good characters around joking and stuff with no immediate chrisis and for a HAPPY occasion (very rare). And there was plenty of action. I definitley liked the "wedding crashers". Not to mention that I LOVE Mara Jade. She is funny and tough and totally fit to be a main character in the Star Wars universe.

Mariel Jorgensen, 13

2 out of 5 stars Only for hard-core 'shippers.......2005-06-19

This graphic novel is not essential reading - in fact, it should be touted as the Mills and Boons version of the Star Wars EU.

Stackpole writes well, capturing the comedic insanity which accompanies all weddings (the panels featuring Mara Jade going for dress fittings alone might be worth the price), but even his writing could not save the spineless plot, which features six forgettable thugs trying to stop the wedding for some reason or another.

The weak ending leaves the taste of watery bland gruel in your mouth, made even worse by Teranishi's rather erratic art style. Luke oscillates between looking like he was in Star Wars, and looking like a smarmy disco-dweller who recently got a punch in the face, botox and then had collagen injections in his cheeks. For some reason, a lot of the male characters look very sleepy - just look at the cover - Mara and Luke both look like they're about to be attacked by the big Z monster anytime. I guess it was a failure on the artist's part to capture the hazy gaze of love. Not to mention the rather bizarre bodies which got drawn - look at the cover again, and you'll see an overly-muscular Luke and Mara in the foreground. The artist also does not seem to know how to properly capture body postures and positions - there was one distinctly uncomfortable body hug which Luke gives Mara at the beginning of the book (you can see it in Amazon's preview pages), and her head is twisted at a weird angle, and Luke is just... unnaturally balanced.

If you love Luke and Mara together, you should get it because the Jedi bonding ceremony (held prior to the civil ceremony) is worth a look at, but if you want to get this to add to your Star Wars knowledge repository, give it a miss. The summary is: they got married. Save your money and get Mara Jade: By The Emperor's Hand instead. I think that artist actually likes Mara.

5 out of 5 stars a union of brilliant art and inspired writing.......2005-04-19

Star Wars Union is much more than the tale of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade's wedding. Union is easily one of the best Star Wars tales available for a number of reasons.

1: The art is brilliant. Teranishi delivers a style that is a delightful mixture of photo-realism with enough of his own style to make it highly interesting. Not only do the characters from the movies look amazingly like the actors, but the characters that exist in novel form appear as described.

2: The writing is Stackpole's best, and easily some of the best in the Star Wars universe. In some places it is absolutely hilarious. Several times I had to put the book down because I was laughing out loud. Stackpole has a way of capturing the quirky madness that surrounds a wedding and then weaves in the antics of the characters we know and love so well. The sub plot with the disenfranchised Imperials seemed to be a point of contention for other reviewers, but to me, it was insignificant compared to all the comedic delights this story has to offer.

3: The over all characterizations that are a blend of writer and artist, that must be seen to be believed.

Not only does this novel sport appearances by most everyone in the Star Wars universe, it is fun, and funny, with a quick pace and fun rollicking feeling. Not only fans of Luke and Mara, fans of any and all Star Wars characters will love this novel.

    Book Description

    This collection includes:

    Ambush at Corellia

A trade summit on Corellia brings Han Solo back to the home world he left many years before. Arriving on the distant planet with Leia, their children and Chewbacca, Han finds Corellia overrun with agents of the New Republic Intelligence and finds himself part of a deceptive plan whose aim not even he understands. One thing is clear: the five inhabited worlds of the sector are on the brink of civil war and the once peaceful coexistence of the three leading races -- human, Selonian, and Drallan -- has come to an end.

    Assault at Selonia
Imprisoned on the planet Corellia, Han Solo finds himself at the mercy of his evil cousin, Thracken Sal-Solo. Thracken plans to restore the Imperial system and seize total power -- no matter what the cost. Han has one chance to stop him. But to do so he must turn his back on his human cousin and join forces with a female alien. Dracmus was arrested as a ringleader in a plot against the corrupt Human League. Now she and Han will attempt a daring escape to Selonia in time to warn Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Lando of Thracken's plan. But can Han trust the alien to keep her word?

Meanwhile, other questions threaten the New Republic -- and the lives of millions. Who is behind the deadly Starbuster plot? Why is someone attempting to take possession of Corellia's powerful planetary repulsors? And what is the secret behind the mysterious Centerpoint Station, and ancient, artificial world of unknown origin that has suddenly -- and inexplicably -- come alive?

    Showdown at Centerpoint
When a loyalist ship approaching Selonia is blasted out of space, Han Solo quickly realizes that rebel forces are turning planetary repulsors into weapons of immense destruction. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian manage to discover the terrifying secret of Centerpoint Station. It is the infamous Starbuster itself, and its next programmed nova, hard-wired in, is set to annihilate a chosen star, its inhabited worlds, and millions of innocent lives. There's only one way to stop it: blow up the station. But as a massive rebel fleet closes in on Centerpoint, Han, Luke and their friends will discover time is running out.

Then the true leaders of the rebellion reveal their identities, and issue their final ultimatum: The New Republic must withdraw all claim to power over the entire Corellian sector. With the future of Corellian freedom at stake, Han and those loyal to the Republic must somehow resist. But how can they possibly stop the deadliest weapon the galaxy has ever known?
