5 out of 5 stars Completely hooked my reluctant reader!.......2007-05-16

My 7 1/2 year old has always been a hesitant reader. She knows her phonics rules, but reads very slowly and lacks fluency. At this point she needs to practice reading, but most books are either too easy, or too difficult and frustrating. We stumbled upon this Stablemates book at a Scholastic book fair, and she was immediately hooked - it helps that she's a horse nut. She started reading it on the way home in the car, and couldn't put it down. Now I'm here ordering more of the Stablemates titles! I like that the language is just challenging enough to push her a little, but repetitive enough with word families throughout (midnight/starlight/bright; good/took/stood) that it reinforces her skills. Plus it's a "chapter" book, so she's feeling pretty proud of herself, too!

    5 out of 5 stars What a nice book!.......2007-04-15

My daughter loved this book so much I used Amazon.com to purchase 3 more Stablemates books. Anything that helps her enjoy reading is great in my book! It was a nice story and we enjoy it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my 4 yr old horse crazy daughter!.......2006-04-20

I was SO happy when I saw these adorable, well priced books at the store! Picked them both up--these are great books for younger children! We have Pony Pals books but those are larger chapter books geared towared older children (8-10rys). These Stablemates books have beautiful, full color illustrations that cover every page with large, easy to read print. These do have chapters, but they are short--these are perfect for reading to your little pre-schooler and perfect for the beginner readers! My daughter and I LOVE these books and can't wait for more editions to be released! We will definitely be purchasing more!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Books!!.......2007-08-09

My 7 year old daughter found this series while we were in London this June. Naturally they were a hit since horses and princesses are two of her favorite things. It also helps that there is a little mystery thrown in. She reads them from cover to cover in one sitting. And she often re-reads them when she is finished. The stories are appropriate and interesting and the characters are loveable.

5 out of 5 stars Great series for pony-crazed girls.......2006-11-11

My 7 year old daughter discovered Princess Ellie books this past summer. She is always anxious to hear the next chapter every evening to see how Princess Ellie will solve her lastest problem revolving around ponies (hers or ones that show up in the books). We found this book fun because Princess Ellie is given instuctions how to deal with the press; and she has to figure out how to solve a mystery without breaking too many of her how-princesses-should-act rules.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready for Book 2!!.......2006-07-20

Like I said before for book 1: this is a great twist to the Drizzt series and a must buy and read!!!

4 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the first.......2004-09-03

I like this book a lot, but I felt it lacking the normal action I would expect from a good Drow book. I understand that Liriel was trying to become a force of good/light, but I prefer the more "evil" Drow concept. However the book was satifying and I enjoyed it.

    5 out of 5 stars Good continuation.......2004-01-28

This was a good continuation the story, though a background in sword coast geography and rivalries might be helpful it was not really needed.

The story at sea and later on the island of Ruathym had a lot of twists and turns and was a page turner.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant read that takes you away!.......2003-10-03

Following on the footsteps of Daughter of the Drow, Cunningham brings our favourite mischeivous drow back in all her elven glory. Truly, I have never found anyone who writes elves as well as Cunningham. The dark elves, or drow, are by far the most difficult to write. Yet Cunningham pulls it off with brilliance! Liriel continues on with Fyodor to solve some mysteries and bring her adorable impish charm into our hearts and minds. Again, I rave about Cunningham's talent in bringing her characters to life. Few authors pull this off as well as she does. You simply can't stop reading!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing to see here........2003-09-10

Ug. I just finished reading this book less than 5 minutes ago and I feel like I need to hurry up and write my summary because this is a book I don't care to remember. Maybe some people like books where you need to take notes and draw maps and flowcharts all throughout your reading so you can keep track of the story, but I'm not one of those people. And in this book it hardly mattered anyway because virtually none of the characters had any reason for existing. They are just there to hopefully draw your attention away from the fact that everything between the first chapter and the last chapter was just filler space.

Too many characters, none of which where particularly interesting or memorable. Even the main characters where rather bland and uninteresting. The book is a jumbled mess of countless sub plots and meaningless reading. The entire 370 page book could be rewritten in twenty pages and you wouldn't really be missing anything that mattered.

Is it just me or did 90% of these characters seem to exist only to make sure the book was over the 300 page mark? "Hi - I'm here. I have no reason for appearing in this book. But I'll stick around for 5 or 10 pages and then dissapear. And in about 50 or 75 pages from now, I'll show up again only to be killed and you'll be left wondering why I was ever in the story to begin with."

To the people that liked this book. I'm very sorry that my attitude about this book is so, well, childish I guess. But that's how I feel about it.

5 out of 5 stars make room in your fairytale collection.......2002-02-15

the starlight princess combines magical embroidered
pictures with extremely well adapted tales- mostly well-known stories, but with the odd variation which makes
them more suited to modern readers. For example, in
' the princess and the pea ', the prince doesn't just marry
the princess, he finds out first whether she likes him too.
My five-year-old and I are thoroughly enjoying it -great to read aloud.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Fantasy Embroidery.......2001-10-25

As a young child, one of my teachers taught us the basics of embroidery. I still have the tiny apron I made as a child and ended up framing it because I wanted to keep it safe. You will want to read this book and then keep it in a safe place too!

In "The Starlight Princess" the story is illustrated completely with embroidery. Belinda Downes is a world-renowned embroidery artist and you will want to also find "A Stitch in Rhyme" and "Every Little Angel's Handbook." She has always loved history and costume design and was very excited to illustrate this book and uses luxuriant fabrics and different threads and stitches. This is not cross stitch! The pages look like calico fabric.

To say I am impressed with this book is an understatement. I am fascinated with the embroidery, all the delicate details woven through the pages, framing the story with exquisite detail.

As a little girl I dreamed of being a princess. One time, I had my brother help me put two mattresses up on my bed and we put a pea under the bed to see if I could feel it. Since I couldn't, we declared that I must be a princess indeed. lol

Well, that story is actually in this collection of eight fairy tales and is the first story. The Frog Princess, King Grizzlebeard, The Starlight Princess, The Sleeping Beauty, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Egg Prince and White-Bear-King Valemon are included in this collection.

Annie Dalton's storytelling brings meaning to the embroidery. She also brings such humor to some of the stories.

"There was once a princess so beautiful that any prince who saw her portrait instantly became desperate to marry her. Unfortunately, as soon as they actually met her these princes quickly changed their minds."

The story of the Egg Prince was completely new to me and is about Princess Lebou who can run faster than any warrior. She lives in Africa and helps to break a spell and release the prince from the egg. But as Annie says: "But in case things don't work out, she sensibly hangs on to those egg shells."

I highly recommend this work of art! Simply one of the most
beautiful books you will ever see if you love embroidery.

A review cannot do this book justice. You must see it to believe it! This deserves at least 100 Stars!

    ~The Rebecca Review

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful tapestry of stories.......1999-11-17

I bought this book for my 5 yr old. She loved the stories as much as the lovely pictures. We have read it many times over. I recommend this as a gift for it is a good collection of stories along with beautiful pictures. It has a beautiful tapestry of stories, highlighted by the many wonderful embroidered images on the page. The pages reflect the linen fabic and add to the stories richness. The stories themselves are a terrific grouping of multicultural tales. Each with a vivid depiction of it's princess heroine. I loved the descriptive stories of many countries and yet they were in many ways noncultural in that princesses are by nature fairly universal the world around. If you wonder if it's as pretty on the inside as the jacket - it is!

When their separation becomes unbearable, Akane disguises herself as a maid of her mother, who works for the emperor! But entering the gates of the castle doesn't get her any closer to Aogi, and soon these star-crossed lovers are breaking all the rules for that sweet reunion they both crave.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars More Starlight's even better!.......2005-11-08

The thing I like about this series is that you can jump in on the second volume and not be completely lost. Volume two with it's 4 chapters is a story in itself. While it might help to know that Akane and Aogi are and have always been childhood friends (it tells us this in volume one), other than that, volume two is completely understandable without reading volume one.

Volume two of "More Starlight to Your Heart" deals more with the inside feelings of a few of the characters. We now find out that Akane's older brother isn't just a lazy bum and that he stays home from work on rainy days to be with the woman that he loves most. (which I think is really cute, although I don't want to give anything away)

The relationship between Minor Captain Aogi (Akane's "lover") and Middle Captain Tou (Akane's brother) is strengthened I think because they both find that they have something in common. They're both hopelessly in love with women who aren't exactly what everyone thinks they are; women who have their own problems and need a little consoling every once in a while.

Anyway, this book was adorable and even though I bought it before volume one (I bought volume one off of here as soon as I was done reading volume two) at a bookfair, I was still happy that I could understand it.

This is a great series for younger girls too. Maybe not 5 year olds but it's rated for all ages. Maybe some of those little hopeless romantics out there would love it. There are a few sexual innuendos here and there but they're the kind of things that kids will 'understand when they're older'.

I loved it and I highly recommend that anyone read it! You wont be sorry.

    Book Description

The second title in the award-winning Starlight Series is a gripping adventure that will hold your attention from beginning to end. You will know and love, or hate, the characters in the book and thrill along with them in their many adventures. Miranda is an earnest, spunky girl, in love with a horse. Her best friend Laurie is loyal and honest. Burly and big-hearted Christopher is the only one of the three to own a horse, which he shares with his friends as they vie against classmates in the stiff competition of a horse show.

Faced with the challenge of nursing a badly injured black stallion, Starlight, back to health, Miranda further shapes her own values, capabilities, loyalty, and courage. Living on a Montana dairy farm with her grandparents while her mother seeks her fortune in L.A., Miranda has found that the students in the small rural school have little tolerance for newcomers. In this fast-paced volume, she must deal with mean-spirited classmates, adults who don't understand her, and a psychotic villian who seeks revenge by attacking the horse she loves.

An exciting shift to the big screen will take place in the coming few years,in that an independant feature film is currently being developed, based upon parts of "Miranda and Starlight" and "Starlight's Courage."

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced action.......2006-05-23

Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views (5/06)
"Starlight's Courage" is number two in the Starlight Series and is more action-packed than the first. Although Miranda has been going with Chris and Laurie to the stables almost every day after school, she is still not confident in her friendship with Chris. When the popular girls tease her, she denies she is friends with Chris and says hurtful things about him. When Chris starts to ignore her, she realizes what a friend he really is, and she announces this to the entire class. Later, she upholds her loyalty to Chris and Laurie when the same girls make fun of them all with a rude drawing. Miranda's temper flares and she fights the girls and ends up suspended for a week.

Miranda's quick temper and tendency to act before she thinks causes her much trouble. Especially when she is trying to protect the horse she loves so much. Miranda's grandparents are baffled by her violent behavior toward events. As the reader, we learn about Miranda's personal feelings as she talks to herself in the mirror. Having her mother in California, and not knowing her father at all, upsets her and causes her to act out when other kids call her an orphan. Later in the book, an exciting turn of events brings Miranda more information about her long lost father and explains some of her personality traits.

The fast-paced action in this book keeps any young boy or girl reading along and looking for the next book in the series to come out. However, each book could also be read individually or at well-spaced intervals. The first chapter quickly catches the reader up on what happened in the previous book.
Beyond the adventures, there is also the long-term themes of friendship and loyalty that pull the reader from book to book in this series. Starlight has healed from his wounds. Chris has learned to ride his horse and has won ribbons at the Winter Fair riding competition. The "Magnificent Four" have decided they want to be friends with Miranda, Chris, and Laurie, if the three can forgive them for their behavior. Mr. Taylor, the owner of Starlight, has made contact with his daughter in England, and ends up caring for his young grandson Elliot upon her death.

The development of the steady characters, plus new ones we meet along the way, keep the reader invested in the series. A good horse story will pull any horse-lover in. But this book goes beyond the expected. It includes important topics to be explored by young readers such as racism, honesty, and family dynamics. I can't wait to pick up the next installment of this series!

The sequel to "Miranda and Starlight", Starlight's Courage by Janet Muirhead Hill is the story of a young girl and an injured two-year-old stallion named Starlight that she has befriended. When she and her friends arrange to ride in a competition against their classmates, they are all unaware that a disturbed individual is seeking revenge. An involving and highly recommended novel for young readers which is nicely enhanced with Pat Lehmkuhl's black-and-white sketches.
