Book Description

"The Battle of Leyte Gulf was an extremely unusual battle. It was unusual on five separate counts that are so obvious that they are usually missed. It was unusual in that it was a series of actions, not a single battle. It was unusual as a naval battle in that it was fought over five days; historically, naval battles have seldom spread themselves over more than one or two days. It was unusual in terms of its name. This battle involved a series of related actions subsequently grouped together under the name of just one of these engagements, but in fact none of the actions were fought inside Leyte Gulf. . . . More importantly, it was unusual in that it was a full-scale fleet action fought after the issue of victory and defeat at sea had been decided, and it was unusual in that it resulted in clear, overwhelming victory and defeat." --from Chapter One

The Battle of Leyte Gulf--October 22-28, 1944--was the greatest naval engagement in history. In fact the battle was four separate actions, none of which were fought in the Gulf itself, and the result was the destruction of Japanese naval power in the Pacific. This book is a detailed and comprehensive account of the fighting from both sides. It provides the context of the battle, most obviously in terms of Japanese calculations and the search for "a fitting place to die" and "the chance to bloom as flowers of death." Using Japanese material never previously noted in western accounts, H.P. Willmott provides new perspectives on the unfolding of the battle and very deliberately seeks to give readers a proper understanding of the importance of this battle for American naval operations in the following month. This careful interrogation of the accounts of "the last fleet action" is a significant contribution to military history.

4 out of 5 stars Not an easy read...but rewarding.......2007-06-01

Willmott's fourth or fifth book on the Pacific War is perhaps not as groundbreaking as Empires in the Balance and The Barrier and the Javelin (both fantastic reviews of the early months of the war). And this is not one of those popular history seen and told through the eyes of the participants, like much of the junk popular trash at Borders and Barnes and Noble (Stephen Ambrose was the best known of this type). Instead, Willmott takes a long look at the strategic situation in the fall of 1944 with an especially welcome look from the Japanese side. Willmott does not follow the details of the battles but instead asks how the parties strategic and operational doctrines lead them to the battle, and how did the deal with the battle. Willmott thoroughly analzyes the options available to the decision makers and pulls no punches in criticizing many of the leaders. Willmott's style is not always easy to follow, but that is because many of his sentences are complex, as he tries to explain complex situations. I have over 1000 WWII books in my library and put this in the top 10%. I recommend it, as I do Empires in the Balance and The Barrier and the Javelin.

2 out of 5 stars Rich in technical detail, yet woefully short on style.......2006-12-13

Let me first caution any would be reader of this book that this is NOT a combat narrative. This book is an academic study of the political and strategic events leading up to, during, and after the battle of Leyte Gulf. The purpose of the book is for the author to give his critical analysis of the tactics and decisions of the various commanders and the American effort in the Pacific itself. To those ends, and for only the most serious of scholars, I believe the author is successful. However, as an entertaining read for the lay history buff, this book fails miserably.

It is unfortunate, as this is easily one of the most compelling of all the naval battles of the Pacific theater of World War II. Other authors present the action in vivid and personal detail, but not Willmott. Here the actual combat is rendered in dry - I would go as far to say boring - and technical fashion. The author writes from a vantage point that does not put you in the middle of the battle; he write as if he is above it, looking down from his ivory tower. But perhaps that is what academic studies are all about. All I know is I found this to make for very tedious reading.

That said, if you're looking for someone to armchair quarterback the entire battle in an analytical fashion, all the while feeding you endless dates, times, facts, figures, and of course harsh critiques of everyone from Halsey to MacArthur, then this book is for you. But if you're looking for something that's actually enjoyable to read then I would suggest the following: for an overall picture of the battle and its ramifications, yet still with tactical detail, check out Afternoon of the Rising Sun by Kenneth Friedman. For a gripping and moving account of the action that reaches down to the level of individual sailors and pilots, check out Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by James Hornfischer.

3 out of 5 stars For the most part just annoying.......2006-11-27

If you watch political pundints for the sheer pleasure of yelling back at the TV, this is the book for you. To call it annoyingly pedantic is overgenerous. The author offers little new research, but lots of new analyses. Unfortunately, he often dances around his analysis so long it becomes difficult to find his conclusion. Occassionally he takes the exact opposite approach by stating a concise conclusion without supporting analyses. Take for example the disembodied statement, that "...Kurita was the only person in the Pacific war able to make Halsey appear intellectually gifted."

The maps are too few and relatively elementrary. The photos you've seen a hundred times elsewhere.

The book does contain useful tables of formation compositions and overall strengths, and provides a solid basis for some points that are othewise vaugely obvious. An example here is the fact that a Japaneese victory at Leyte would not have changed the outcome of the war.

There are 4 good reasons to read this book. First, for the visceral pleasure of yelling back at the author in the middle of a crowded coffee shop. Second, for the intellectual excercise of discerning the author's actual point and then, as appropriate, building your case for why it is nonsense. Third for a few good analytical nuggets.

For these reasons, I found the book entertaining. However, Morison's volume XII, "Lete," is much more informative.

By the way, I didn't forget to list my fourth reason. I just decided not to tell you about it.

4 out of 5 stars A tough read stylistically .......2006-07-07

I spend a lot of time reading history, the majority (at least as of now) regarding the WWII era. Therefore, I was surprised when I found this book to be rather tough going. The book is a first class work of non-fiction, no doubt about that, but I must say that the writer's style is difficult. Certainly, the writing is not what I would call fluid or elegant, or enjoyable, or even just plain easy reading. Buy if you're interested in the Pacific War, but be warned that it will take a while to get through the book.

3 out of 5 stars Book in need of a critical editor.......2006-04-01

Wilmont has written a fascinating account of American and Japanese decision making before, during, and after the battle of Leyte Gulf, but his style is off putting to say the least. At times this book reads like a poor translation from another language. Consider the following quote from pp. 71-72 which is typical of his style:

" Some pages ago there was reference to the fact that amid various Japanese claims of victory 'five matters are worthy of note'. In fact, however, only three were then considered, hence the need to draw this chapter to a close by reference to the remaining two- this being quite deliberate and not a case of belated improvisation as a result of a sudden awareness of unintended negligence".

This book would have benefited greatly by a clear statement of his main theses upfront, defense of those theses, and a final summary. It would also have benefited from better use of maps and graphs or charts through out. There is not one reference to maps hidden in the back of the book, nor any charts of tonnage lost. Rather the author chooses to ramble on in obtuse text about such matters. This book's text could have been reduced by at least one-third by a good editor. It's a shame that someone with such knowledge can't write a decent English sentence!

5 out of 5 stars Sixthfleet is the new Midway!.......2006-10-13

Since Chester Nimitz, never has the US Navy been portrayed in a more realilistic, successful, operational, and intelligent light. Sixthfleet is the "Winds of War" for the 21st century, Herman Wouk, eat your hear out!

I am in the Navy, a lieutenant commander, and never have I read a book that sums up the successes I have had in my professional life, like this read. I always tell people that my life is Topgun meets JAG, and this book captured that spirit.

I've been waiting until the Navy's 213th birthday to put my thoughts about this book down, and I recommend you all read, drink some grog, and play anchor's away as you do it. Full speed ahead into adventure!!

3 out of 5 stars Good story, but be warned that you have to buy the sequels.......2004-06-14

There are several positive things to say about "The Sixth Fleet" by David E. Meadows. The story is quite exciting and the combat scenes seem to be realistic. Especially the descriptions of how men react under attack have an authentic quality about them, and this makes the book enjoyable to read.

That said, I do have three major problems with "The Sixth Fleet".

First problem: The story is not complete. I was aware that "The Sixth Fleet" was the start of a series of books, but I didn't realize that the story in this book ends abruptly in the middle of the build-up to a major conflict, so you have to buy the next book in the series or be left dangling with everything unresolved.

The fact that the story is incomplete means that many of the characters in the book make their appearance and are described in detail and prepare to take part in the story - and then are not mentioned again! What happens with SEAL Captain Duncan James and his side-kick and their newly acquired female cohort? What will happen to the President of Algeria? Why does the author give us detailed descriptions of how the U.S. President reacts to the initial attacks by the enemy, but not to the more serious later attacks? Hopefully, all of these characters return in volume two, but their fragmentary appearances in this book are very unsatisfying.

OK, perhaps you're willing to buy the next book in the series, and maybe even like the fact that the story is big enough and complicated enough that it needs several volumes. If so, please ignore the previous two paragraphs.

Second problem: The entire story is based on a "what if" scenario set in the indeterminate future. The premise is that American military might has been seriously diminished due to budget cut-backs in the USA, and at the same time Europe has become USA-antagonistic.

The fact that the story is based on this "what if" scenario makes the book less appealing for me. For one thing, I don't think that the proposed scenario is very likely to occur, and anyway, even if it does occur someday, I'd prefer a story that is based on something resembling here-and-now reality.

Also, putting the story in the future results in weird situations like this: "I will be the most powerful man in the Arab world, Colonel Alqahiray said to himself. And even more worshiped than old Saddam, who still manages to hold on to power at his age." (pg. 18)

Third problem: The author has no knowledge of modern data-based communications systems, etc. This implies that he should have gotten some expert help when writing the parts of the story that involve these systems. Instead, he resorted to techno-babble, assuming that the readers were just as poorly informed as him. This works for most readers, but for those of us who know the difference between techno-babble and creative extrapolation / modification of real technologies it leaves the impression that the author just couldn't be bothered doing the right thing.

For example, the author claims that GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites are in geo-stationary orbit (they aren't). He also implies that tampering with the GPS satellites so that GPS receivers show incorrect coordinates would not result in an almost immediate global alert about the problem. There is also confusion between the public telephone / telefax system and computer-based messaging systems. Descriptions of how computer viruses work are completely crazy, etc., etc.

On one level this can be brushed off as nit-picking. Who cares if the author's descriptions of data communications are accurate or not? But the problem is one of credibility. I've caught the author faking some aspects of the story, so then I have to wonder if he's also faking the descriptions of naval combat scenes and aerial dogfights?

So even though Mr. Meadows left me curious (and frustrated) with his cliff-hanger ending of "The Sixth Fleet", I'm not planning on buying the next book, despite the positive aspects of this book.

4 out of 5 stars 'A solid, entertaining story".......2003-11-28

This series definitely has potential. I'd really like to see more of the SEAL trio -- James, Beau & H.J. With James getting crapped on, Beau the wise-cracker and H.J. trying to prove herself as a lady SEAL, a lot of interesting things could happen. The plot to rid the Med of American influence was pretty good, especially since it's carried out by one sharp, evil Libyan colonel. A very good adversary for the U.S. to face. Some of the best scenes involved the Algerian revolution, especially with the loyalists trying to get the President out of the country while encountering all sorts of hairy situations. I really enjoyed the battle scenes at the end. Very fast-paced and well done. Looking forward to the rest of the Sixth Fleet books.

5 out of 5 stars The Tom Clancy of the 21st Century!!!!.......2003-07-27

David Meadows is clearly the Tom Clancy of the new century. His knowledge of the Sixth Fleet and the countries of the Med is clearly evident on every page! Moreover, his characters are realistic three dimensional folks that draw you into the story. I am a Navy Reservist and I found these books impossible to put down. I highly recommend the Sixth Fleet series and his new Joint Task Force series to anyone who likes a great, action packed military story!

5 out of 5 stars What More Can I Say!.......2002-10-01

Based on the other fine reviews of this book, at this juncture, my review would be redundant. All of the superlatives have been exhausted. It's true what they all say. If the term "streetwise" applies to military thrillers, then let the term apply to Capt. Meadows' Sixth Fleet. He writes with authority.

I very much enjoyed the raging battle scenes toward the end of the story. There is absolutely nothing good or grand about war, but I will note that Capt. Meadows did a masterful job at creating some very dramatic and very real battle scenes. The Americans and Italians are fighting the Libyans, both at sea and in the air.

I look forward to reading the entire Sixth Fleet series. The good news is that Capt. Meadows has recently contracted to do four more books. Well-done David. Cheers, shipmate.

Navy Captain, David Meadows, certainly saved the best book for the end to his navy thriller series! I was spellbound until the end of the book. This is definately one book by David Meadows you do not want to miss! Exciting, thrilling, a real page turner!

5 out of 5 stars Relentless Action and Suspense.......2003-01-29

In the rising genre of military techno thriller, CAPT. David E. Meadows rises to the top. I have not read the first three books in this series, but "Cobra" is a blood curdling introduction to the madness of radical terrorists and a brilliant testimony to the true bravery of men and women-in this case Americans but we can add in all coalition military forces-put in harm's way defending humanity and our right to freedom. Capt. Meadows has the advantage of an unprecedented background in sea duty, and as a political and military insider serving on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, his fictional scenarios take on a frightening reality of a world most readers never know. Though "Cobra" is set in the future, it could be the story of what is happening right now. All the players are there-North Korea and just substitute Iraq for Algiers-and the threat of mass destruction with biochemical weapons. His characters also demonstrate why we will win the war against terrorism because the bonding between our defenders of the peace manifests a dedication and faith in each other that terrorists, who lead by fear, can never defeat. Whether you are a military person or just a plain civilian, this book grabs you and won't let you put it down until the last word.

5 out of 5 stars NO BS -- IGOR IS A VERY GOOD.......2002-12-17

Please take the time to read CAPT Meadows books. I could say a lot of wonderful things to get you to go out and buy his books, but I believe it would be better to let you know about CAPT Meadows from my own personal experience.

I met Dave (Igor) in 1974. He was a CTI1 (E6) linguist stationed in Athens, and I flew with him over the next 3 years. He was extremely competant, hard working, and very intimidating. Igor stands somewhere in the neighborhood of 6'6". Dave knows the Med better than anyone. He knows the enemy, the tactics, the "game". He's been out there on all the recce aircraft as an aircrewman, been on the ships as a cryptologic direct support rider, and rode the ships as a division officer. He's been on Fleet Staff duty and know's about the integration of fleet sensor information, and how it may affect operations. He's been there and done that. So when you read about the stories, you can really sense what it's like to be in those shoes. Dave knows what he's talking about. Finally, do yourself a favor, go out and read one of his books. He's a raising star in this genre and you won't ever forget his work. He's made a significant difference in the cryptologic community, and I hope that he will continue to influence Naval leadership in the future by writing more. Thanks, Igor!

5 out of 5 stars Been there.............2003-12-31

I enjoyed this book very much. The primary reason is that the author's knowledge and experience in the Navy are reflected in his style of writing. He provides insight into the day-to-day, almost minute by minute tempo of military operations. He does not overwhelm the reader with technical jargon, but explains what is happening in a manner that draws the reader into believing that he or she is in the same environment as the characers in the book.

As a naval aviation veteran, I was pleased to see the detail he puts into his stories - several times I was caught up in the story line and remembered details about being part of a multi-crew aircraft that I thought I had forgotten. For those of us who have served, that is a powerful stimulant.

I found that this book, as well as the first in the series, was very difficult to put down at night. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series, as well as earlier novels by Dave Meadows that I have missed.

David Meadows first book was good, and sorry, not really worth writing home about, though I really liked it. This one is so much better. The characters and plot were brought together seamlessly. I was actually in tears while one our ships was sunk.
If the next installment is as good, I'll read through it just as fast. Keep them coming. Tom Clancy doesn't have a chance.

I just finished The Sixth Fleet: Tomcat and was held in awe with the excellent plot and character development. David E. Meadows is a fantastic writer, who kept me on the edge of my seat while I followed the tale of forces engaged in a whole new battle ... unconventional war. David is impressively knowledgable concerning modern military tactics and develops the combat situation in a realistic manner. He knows the excitement of engaging the enemy and is able to convey this to the reader. Wonderful military/thriller, I look forward to reading the next in the series. Keep up the great work, David.

I just finished "The Sixth Fleet: Tomcat." I was impressed with the character development and the accuracy with which military strategy and equipment was presented. As a retired military officer, David's portrayal of combat is accurate and gives the reader a real sense of how a modern military force operates in a world faced with unconventional threats. I throughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who is interested in Military/Thrillers. Great job, David...

Moreover, his characters are realistic three dimensional folks that draw you into the story. I am a Navy Reservist and I found these books impossible to put down. I highly recommend the Sixth Fleet series and his new Joint Task Force series to anyone who likes a great, action packed military story!

    Book Description

“Battle Stations—Gun Action!” Ensign Charley Jason, a Reserve officer faces the searing experience of submarine warfare in the Pacific.

When a Fleet type submarine went to war in the Pacific it operated mainly on the surface, attacking convoys at night, always heavily escorted as well as single vessels, rescuing downed fliers during intense air battles and shooting up enemy trawlers, junks, fishing boats and sampans. Often it had to fight to rescue downed pilots with the submarine at total risk during such daytime actions.

    3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-07-03

It wasn't my cup of tea, however, it was still well written. If you are a fan of a more historical book on sub action during WW2 you will probably think it is "just ok" also. I started this book immediately after finishing Maru Killer, so my expectations were skewed after reading that one.

5 out of 5 stars GUNFISH is great!.......2005-07-16

I'm excited! Thanks to the glowing review by Brodie Remington, I got a copy of GUNFISH by Claude M. Pearson. I learned more about life on a W.W.II submarine in the Pacific in just a the first few chapters than I could ever have imagined. The author, Claude M. Pearson, is a W.W.II sub vet and an expert at bringing submarine warfare to life. My favorite part was the daring rescue of downed fliers in the Pacific Ocean south of Kyushu, Japan. This rescue operation took place in the heat of battle and was based on the real-life experiences of the author! I also liked the way the plot bounces between the adventures of the Gunfish crew and the ladies they left back home in San Francisco. I highly recommend GUNFISH to anyone who enjoys a gripping true-to-life adventure. I hope this author has more books in the works!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-07-11

Claude Pearson's vivid portrayal of Charley Jason's experiences aboard Gunfish in 1944 and 1945 brings submarine warfare to life. The experience of being on a submarine in the Pacific, hunting Japanese shipping, battling Kamikaze pilots, rescuing downed American flyers in the water, and missing friends and lovers back home remains remarkably palpable throughout the book. After getting my copy of the novel, I read it straight through on transcontinental flight... often finding myself turning the pages as fast I could to find out what would happen next to Jason, Flowers, Carruther, Janet Blair, and the rest of the characters. The funniest moments arise more often than not in the pages of an illegal diary kept on board the Gunfish and in the Gunfish Gargoyle. It has been a while since I found myself so genuinely attached to a cast of characters and I was happy to see Pearson remain true to his characters by resisting the temptation to bring everything to a tidy conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Lions and Tigers and Cats oh my!!.......2002-03-15

The human fleets have signed an peace throaty with the cats but has the war really ended? As Jason "Bear" Bodevsy and Ian "Iceman" Hunter face against time to discover the earth's time may have just run out.

Wonderful book I liked the imagery and to find a book that does not strictly go by the plot that the game set out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best WC Books ever.......1999-07-11

What is it about this book that makes you read it over and over. Well the action, humour, a little romance, and the emotion combined with a desperate battle for survival make this book a worth while read. If they only made them like this.

5 out of 5 stars Wing Commander at its best..........1999-06-01

When I read Fleet Action a few months ago I was relatively new to Wing Commander, having only been familiar with WCIII and WCIV and Colonel Christopher Blair. I wasn't too sure I'd like this Jason Bondarevsky guy since I was used to Blair. But I found this book to be one of the best in the series, sticking close to real military facts yet maintaining that brand of science-fiction. And there were some familiar characters from the game like Thrakhath, Tolwyn, and Paladin, so I wasn't totally lost within all these new guys. But in conclusion Fleet Action had all of the action, suspense, drama, etc. I'd expect with the Wing Commander series.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down.......1999-02-16

The best of the Wing Commander books. Emotional and exciting, two qualities that i find are missing from books based on previeously created series, like Star Trek or Star Wars. Hunter's death moved me to the point of tears. It didn't take me there entirely but when Admiral Tolwyn cried when they found his nephew, that part drives me over the edge every time I read it. The decriptions of the Battle of Earth are absolutely perfect. Especially when Mike Powolski rams the Kilrathi super carrier with his destroyer. When I read that to my girlfriend, she started sobbing. I recomend this book to anyone who likes a good read. The next Wing Commander movie should be based on this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best WC Book Yet.......1998-06-18

An excellent book providing the reading with non-stop action. This book will keep you on the edge of you seat with surprises around every turn. You will not be sorry that you bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work by a naval historian who "gets it".......2001-11-14

This is the book later republished under the title _Fleet to Fleet Encounters_. It is an excellent overview of the naval battles of Tsushima, Jutland and the Philippine Sea. While the Jutland section may have been overtaken by new analyses published later, the Philippine Sea section is a major account of this battle which is somewhat neglected in comparison with Leyte Gulf, 4 months later. Particularly illuminating is Grove's use of the battle to effectively demolish criticisms of aircraft carriers as "having half their aircraft devoted to self defense" by pointing out that the success of the US fighters in destroying the rebuilt Japanese carrier air force was a decisive victory in and of itself. Much better than Keegan's foray into naval history.
