Book Description
Arguably the most influential document in the history of urban planning, Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, coauthored by Edward Bennett and produced in collaboration with the Commercial Club of Chicago, proposed many of the city’s most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. Carl Smith’s fascinating history reveals the Plan’s central role in shaping the ways people envision the cityscape and urban life itself.
Smith’s concise and accessible narrative begins with a survey of Chicago’s stunning rise from a tiny frontier settlement to the nation’s second-largest city. He then offers an illuminating exploration of the Plan’s creation and reveals how it embodies the renowned architect’s belief that cities can and must be remade for the better. The Plan defined the City Beautiful movement and was the first comprehensive attempt to reimagine a major American city. Smith points out the ways the Plan continues to influence debates, even a century after its publication, about how to create a vibrant and habitable urban environment.
Richly illustrated and incisively written, his insightful book will be indispensable to our understanding of Chicago, Daniel Burnham, and the emergence of the modern city.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping, tightly written book.......2006-12-17
As an architecture tour guide, I've read "The Plan of Chicago" and know some Chicago history. Smith succinctly summarizes prevailing circumstances so the reader knows the context of the development of The Plan, but he deftly includes colorful and precise detail. The book is under 200 pages, reflecting a distinctive self-restraint by this distinguished scholar at Northwestern University. Moving from background of Chicago history and of Daniel Burnham, Smith summarizes the Plan's development, describes the other players, analyzes the Plan's effects, and brings readers quickly up-to-date with urban planning of today. This excellent narrative, supplemented with photographs not commonly seen, ends with a "bibliographic essay" to guide interested readers in their subsequent investigations.

Ca marche!.......2007-09-19
I'm using it right now for French 201. The only drawback is that it has a french/english dictionary in the back and not an english/french like the previous book. I think the authors presume that we shouldn't be using english at all (or minimally). Even so, it would come in handy for those of us still struggling with vocabulary. Merci!

Mark Tansey is brilliant.......2003-01-14
From the first time I saw Tansey's "The Innocent Eye Test" at the Met, I have been fascinated with his work. The illustrations in this book, along with the fabulous essay by Arthur Danto make it a must have for Mark Tansey fans. I only wish there were more books about him and his work. He is a brilliant artist.
A jewel in my art book collection........2000-07-26
Checking the worn copy of this book from the library numerous times had made Mark Tansey one of my alltime favorite artists. Everytime I went into a bookstore, I looked for it. Never any luck, until I was in a used bookstore in Bellingham, Washington. I had already scoured the Art section as usual. When I was leaving, my eye happened to catch the spine in a stack of randomly placed books near the register. For a mere 16 bucks and in perfect condition! I was ecstatic. The reproductions are amazing and the text is insightful, illuminating Tansey's underlying themes and content. If you admire Mark Tansey's work, its simply a must have

Book Description
In 1988 photographer Paul D’Amato was driving around Chicago with his camera when he decided to follow Halsted Street into Pilsen, the city’s largest Mexican neighborhood. Intrigued by the barrio and neighboring Little Village, he began to take photographs and would continue to do so off and on for the next fourteen years. D’Amato started with the public life of the neighborhood: women and children in the streets, open fire hydrants, and graffiti. But later—after he got to know the area’s Mexican residents better—he was allowed to take more intimate photos of people at work, families at weddings and parties, and even gang members.
Barrio collects ninety of these striking color images along with D’Amato’s fascinating account of his time photographing Mexican Chicago and his acceptance—often grudging, after threatened violence—into the heart of the city’s Mexican community. Some of the photos here are beautifully composed and startling—visual narratives that are surreal and dreamlike, haunting and mythic. Others, like those D’Amato took while shadowing graffiti artists in the subway, are far more immediate and improvisational. With a foreword by author Stuart Dybek that places D’Amato’s work in the context of the Pilsen and Little Village that Dybek has elsewhere captured so memorably, this book offers a penetrating, evocative, and overall streetwise portrait of two iconic and enduring Hispanic neighborhoods.
Customer Reviews:
unvarnished splendor.......2007-02-05
If Goya had a camera (this goes for Caravaggio also) his photographs would look like Paul D'Amato's. Within the pages of this compelling book live the supreme photographs of their genre. Fine Art? Documentary? D'Amato's vision is not simply positioned and categorized. These photographs are of people's lives. "Barrio" hugs Mexican life in Chicago. This book reveals a culture and people that are truly beautiful, unvarnished splendor in the direction of labor, guts, water and light. The most respect a photographer can give their subject is to make the strongest (possible and out of the question) photographs. Paul D'Amato repeatedly shows his respect with these photographs.
Barrio.......2006-09-05
I really liked the combination of the pictures and the journal entries. It feels as if the book is the complete story, you get to see the images of the neighborhood and read the story of the photographer. Both the pictures and the words are beautiful. Although the photographer is an outsider in the neighborhood he is able to capture images of the inside.

One of Thiebaud's More Interesting Monographs.......2006-02-16
Wayne Thiebaud is best known for his paintings of edible delicacies and bizarre San Francisco landscapes and while his paintings of these subjects are difficult to find except in museums, Thiebaud spent considerable time at Crown Point Press in San Francisco creating etchings of the same concepts. Some of his fine art prints are pulled in multiple colors, but Thiebaud, being the creative mind he is, also complemented these with hand coloring the black and white artist proofs.
The results are then unique pieces, as each matrix of an image is enhanced by the artist with crayon, pastel, watercolor, charcoal, tempera, acrylic and oil blend with the printer's inks. These uniques are termed 'familial resemblances to the parent print' by the artist and this fine book offers a wide range of the results: cakes, candy apples, fruits, people, cityscapes, landscapes - some seventy odd images in all.
The monograph is accompanied by interesting essays including one by Robert Flynn Johnson - 'Illuminated Impressions: A Brief History of the Hand Colored Print' - which adds immensely to the appreciation for Thiebaud's art. There are a few of these books still available and the quality of the book whether in hard or soft back is so fine that this viewer would recommend your seeking a source. It is a delightful art book. Book Description
In Blutopia Graham Lock studies the music and thought of three pioneering twentieth-century musicians: Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, and Anthony Braxton. Providing an alternative to previous analyses of their work, Lock shows how these distinctive artists were each influenced by a common musical and spiritual heritage and participated in self-conscious efforts to create a utopian vision of the future.
A century after Ellington’s birth, Lock reassesses his use of music as a form of black history and compares the different approaches of Ra, a band leader who focused on the future and cosmology, and Braxton, a contemporary composer whose work creates its own elaborate mythology. Arguing that the majority of writing on black music and musicians hasâeven if inadvertentlyâincorporated racial stereotypes, he explains how each artist reacted to criticism and sought to break free of categorical confines. Drawing on social history, musicology, biography, cultural theory, and, most of all, statements by the musicians themselves, Lock writes of their influential work.
Blutopia will be a welcome contribution to the literature on twentieth-century African American music and creativity. It will interest students of jazz, American music, African American studies, American culture, and cultural studies.
Customer Reviews:
Sorry, but it's just ..........2001-06-26
This reads like poorly researched graduate-school blathering (which I expect it is).
Mr Lock appears to have approached his sources with his thesis already formed and to have avoided all contact with anything that might force him to reconsider. Check out his footnote admitting that his use of Ellington's song title is totally inappropriate to what he's trying to make it mean, yet he decided to use it anyway!
His comparison of Sun Ra's mythological musings and autobiographical confessions with slave narratives is ridiculous in that it reveals a thorough lack of knowledge of comparative religion. The author acts as though the experience of death and rebirth or of choosing a new name to reflect a new station in life were phenomena unique to (and invented by) African-Americans. He clearly didn't research this topic thoroughly.
This is a really shoddy work and not worth your time, much less your money.
A Groundbreaking Study that Any Fan of Jazz Must Read.......2000-08-18
Graham Lock's "Blutopia" stands as one of the great explorations into three of the most enigmatic performers in the history of creative music: Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, and Anthony Braxton. When I first heard that this book going to be published, I worried that Lock's approach might not be able to draw a strong connection between these amazing performers, or that it might be too journalistic and not critical enough, like some of his previous work. After reading just a few pages, it became obvious that this is a first-rate work of scholarship that should be required reading for anyone who is interested in creative music. This will undoubtedly stand among the classic texts written about creative music, along with the brilliant studies by Valerie Wilmer, John Szwed, and Mike Heffley.
Lock examines the common musical heritage of his subjects, showing how their visionary thoughts become manifest in their music, often amidst the crippling misconceptions perpetuated by the press. He delves deeply into the actual interviews and writings of Ra, Ellington, and Braxton, establishing connections between their work and a larger spectrum of academic, religious, and political thought. Particularly interesting is the section on Anthony Braxton, which is a welcome addition to the author's previous work "Forces in Motion." Lock examines Braxton's operas, including even those that have not yet been made available to the public. His discussion of Braxton's use of "text" is an illuminating contribution, and one that is much needed in contemporary scholarship on Braxton.
In short, Lock shows how the art and thought of Braxton, Ellington, and Ra provide those who experience their work with not only the opportunity to view the world with an alternative paradigm, but how in many ways we, as collective humanity, should forget about "history" (which has failed) and start believing in "mystery." The mystery is real--and it is true--and I can think of no better preface to read before embarking on Sun Ra's trips to space--or Braxton's forays into affinity dynamics and meta-reality--than Lock's "Blutopia." It is a masterpiece.

FROM THE GARDENS WHERE WE FEEL SECURE.......2002-04-20
Virginia Astley.Cult singer songwriter from the early 80s whose family lived in Moulsford Oxfordshire. The village close to Alice Country which inspired her first album, the perfect soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland. An instrumental album with added SFX such as birdsong and church bells. Titles like A Summer Long Since Past and Summer Of Their Dreams.
Virginia Astley is,in fact,a reincarnation of Alice and not just because that's her middle name.
Her late father was born in Warrington and moved to Grappenhall in the late 40s which is the next village to Daresbury.
Since that first album Virginia was to become known as a singer and many of her songs have uncanny similarities with Wonderland and even the real life Alice. In "Tree Top Club" comes the line "I bought you sweets and comics from the grocery shop" which is paralleled in the early life of Alice Liddell.
So many others:I Live In Dreams,Nothing Is What It Seems,Over The Edge Of The World.
And another parallel in the fact that Virginia Astley was morally sound, and a reminder that "Alice was the most sensible person in a land of freaks" against a description of Virginia Astley as "unaffected by operating in a business not known for many normal people".
Virginia long ago found her own turf and stayed in it
So this is another Alternate Alice

A thorough, but somewhat slanted approach to Junger.......2001-02-22
The place for a full review of this book is in an academic journal of some sort.-Consequently, this is not my task here. I'm limiting my critique to what I find most fascinating and controversial in the work, contained in the first chapter, The Prose of Apocalypse, where Bullock finds marked similarities between a passage of Junger's and Shelley's "Mount Blanc." Bullock (perhaps because he is a professor of German?) finds that Junger and his teutonic colleague Benjamin plumb greater depths than Shelley. Thus, for Bullock, what look at first to be similarities merely point to the greater depth of Junger's metaphysics. Here is the difference: Junger says, "...the unity and multiplicity of our so mysterious world are hidden"; while Shelley says, "The secret strength of things which governs thought, and to the infinite dome of heaven is a law, inhabits thee! And what were thou, and earth, and stars, and sea, if to the human mind's imaginings silence and solitude were vacancy?" The last question of Shelley's poem is clearly rhetorical and it is clear that Shelley sees a "secret stength of things" in this poem where Junger feels only only hidden, perhaps dark, mystery.-But this comparison, meant to show that Junger is the more profound, is hardly fair to Shelley and, in fact, sets the great English poet up as a foil.-What, if instead of "Mount Blanc," Bullock had chosen Shelley's ironic, despairing poem, "The Triumph of Life," unfinished because Shelley drowned himself before completion? Its images are darker by far than Junger's, a parade of grotesque twisted shapes ravaged by time, and Shelley's last line, after a lifetime and a mass of work delving into these dark metaphysical matters is heartshattering, " 'Then what is life?' I cried."-Bullock, in fairness to him, later in the book seems to imply not so much that the Germans gazed deeper into the abyss than a poet like Shelley. But that Junger's "auratic prose" is somehow better writing. The reader must, of course, be the judge of this. I personally find what Bullock calls (not altogether complimentarily) Shelley's attachment to the "sublime" and Junger's manly confrontation with the abyss a more than somewhat nonsensical and tendentious semantic wordplay.-Both men were interested in the sublime and both courageously confronted the abyss.-Bullock more or less admits this later on.-One should always be careful using terms like "the sublime" and "the abyss." They've been the subjects of so much academic doublespeak over the years that one hardly knows what one means by using them anymore.-Enough said, anyone interested in Junger (or Shelley, for that matter) should read this book. Anything that provokes thought and meditation is so rare these days.
