Book Description

The 2005 Summer Selection is available in an exclusive three volume boxed edition that includes a special reader’s guide with an introduction by Oprah Winfrey.

Titles include:
As I Lay Dying

This novel is the harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. Told in turns by each of the family members–including Addie herself–the novel ranges in mood from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. Originally published in 1930.

The Sound and the Fury
First published in 1929, Faulkner created his “heart’s darling,” the beautiful and tragic Caddy Compson, whose story Faulkner told through separate monologues by her three brothers–the idiot Benjy, the neurotic suicidal Quentin and the monstrous Jason.

Light in August
Light in August, a novel about hopeful perseverance in the face of mortality, features some of Faulkner’s most memorable characters: guileless, dauntless Lena Grove, in search of the father of her unborn child; Reverend Gail Hightower, who is plagued by visions of Confederate horsemen; and Joe Christmas, a desperate, mysterious drifter consumed by his mixed ancestry. Originally published in 1932.

4 out of 5 stars Great American literature.......2007-06-28

The Oprah's Book Club is a great, inexpensive way to own these literary pearls. If you do not know what you are getting into I suggest you read first Light in August, then As I Lay Dying and finally, after bracing, The Sound and the Fury. I found the second a tad too dry and dark, but that's Faulkner. The last one is a book you will eventually reread. The first reading could be helped by the many high quality institutional web sites where this masterpiece is dissected and even rearranged for ease of approach. I am witholding a star simply because I have formed the opinion that Faulkner is, to put in mildly, racially biased or at least wrote for the racially biased. I would love to hear what Oprah thinks about this aspect of Faulkner's but I do not have the time. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging and thought-provoking.......2007-01-05

These novels are not to be read for sheer pleasure, but rather for the challenge and the depth. They are not easy to read, though *Light in August* is the easiest of the three. The prose is so difficult at times that I needed to reread again and again. I had to stop and take numerous breaks because my brain got twisted around.

I strongly suggest getting research materials from a university librray if at all possible to help navigate the stories. In the end, the depth of these novels is profound and extremely rewarding. It was only after I finished them (and read a lot of extra research articles) that I truly appreciated them. These novels are definitely amazing and a great account of southern life in the early part of the 20th century (and after the civil war), and I admire Faulkner more than I ever thought I could.

If you thought James Joyce was complex, try Faulkner!

AS I LAY DYING by William Faulkner

I respect what he did, but I read about 15% of this one before I got bored. I don't agree with Oprah that he's difficult. I knew exactly where he was coming from and where he wanted to go. Many relevant themes and he was a damn fine wordsmith. But it's old news to this jaded old redneck. I don't know why. I realize I just dismissed an author who deserved his Pulitzers and his Nobel Prize, in a single short paragraph, but please hold back on the hate mail.

1 out of 5 stars Quite a challenge for the average reader.......2006-07-25

Quite a challenge for the average reader.

I want to say something like, "you owe it to yourself to read these books."... and perhaps you do. I, however, don't get it. I read the insert by Opera, and all the scholars, I read As I Lay Dying, like I was supposed to, and I simply don't get the allure of Faulkner.

So reader beware. It is a challenge to read Faulkner, not because his ideas are so very profound, but because his writing style leaves me unable to care for any of his characters in any meaningful way. The dialogue is far too folksy, and though I fully realize what he is doing (presenting to us the depth of the human experience by showing us the trials and tribulations of poor folk who are just trying to make a living) I found I had no time to plod through anything more than the first 100 pages.

I realize mine is just one opinion, but think before you buy. In the reader's guide that accompanies the books, Opera suggests that you are not really a reader unless you have read Faulkner. Please take that with a grain of salt and give yourself a break... Faulkner just might not be for you.

1 out of 5 stars Not for me........2006-02-22

I tried, really I did, to read these books. They were very difficult to understand. I even did an online discussion with "experts" to try to figure out what was going on, but it just didn't happen. I read "As I Lay Dying" entirely & the story behind the story told by the "experts" was okay, but did not make the read worth the time. The 2nd book, I couldn't get past the first few chapters & by the third book, I had given up. Definitely not my style.

Book Description

Absorption and Scattering of Light by Small Particles
Treating absorption and scattering in equal measure, this self-contained, interdisciplinary study examines and illustrates how small particles absorb and scatter light. The authors emphasize that any discussion of the optical behavior of small particles is inseparable from a full understanding of the optical behavior of the parent material-bulk matter. To divorce one concept from the other is to render any study on scattering theory seriously incomplete.
Special features and important topics covered in this book include:
* Classical theories of optical properties based on idealized models
* Measurements for three representative materials: magnesium oxide, aluminum, and water
* An extensive discussion of electromagnetic theory
* Numerous exact and approximate solutions to various scattering problems
* Examples and applications from physics, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, and biophysics
* Some 500 references emphasizing work done since Kerker's 1969 work on scattering theory
* Computer programs for calculating scattering by spheres, coated spheres, and infinite cylinders

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Absorption and Scattering!.......2005-06-06

Bohren and Huffman present a coherent and comprehensive description of absorption and scattering by small particles. The text is written in a very amusing style, where ideas are presented in a conversation like manner, as if the authors are directly addressing the reader, providing jokes and examples to illustrate their point. This text builds upon the description provided by Hulst in classic text, and provides a deal of useful information particularly related to absorption (not covered by the text of Hulst)!

The first eight chapters illustrate the basic theory of scattering and absorption, introducing expression and physics relevant to spheres, spheroids and a whole array of particles. This section is quite similar in spirit to the text by Hulst, requires a background in electrodynamics (to make it most useful) . In part II and part III, the authors discuss the optical constants of bulk matter and small particles respectively, citing examples of metallic as well as semiconducting particles. This book fills the need for a textbook for studying extinction coefficients of all kinds of particles, and is useful for physicists, chemists, meteorologists, material scientists, etc. Nonlinear optics is not covered, as also the effect of multi-particle scattering (and thankfully so)!

The book is very useful for people studying absorption (and scattering) of nanoparticles. It contains a good description of basic physics of plasmon resonance, extremely relevant to the research of people studying metallic particles. Bohren has written some really amusing as well as insightful "science" books on experiments and observations of physical phenomenon in daily life (and atmospheric sciences). This book is similar, with additional detail in terms of mathematical equations:)! Extremely useful for researchers and scientists even remotely associated with studies of absorption and scattering by particles! In terms of usefulness, this book is much better than the text by Kerker on similar topic!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-02-15

Very good choice of topics. Clear presentation. Caters to a wide variety of audiences.

I'd give it a 5 if it included a chapter devoted practical aspects of experimental light scattering measurements, techniques, and instrumentation.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written exposition, 1st-rate content........2000-11-09

The authors' lively and `user-friendly' style of presentation help bring material of an advanced nature within the reach of a larger number of readers than most books that deal with the subject at this level. I highly recommend this classic reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for motivated student or expert.......1999-06-29

I have found this to be a very useful reference for calculations of light-scattering properties of particles of various sizes and shapes. Discussions of subjects ranging from geometrical optics to Mie theory appear clear and complete. The book also includes computer algorithms for computing scattering properties of homogeneous spheres, coated spheres and cylinders.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on light scattering........1998-09-07

This book must be on the table of every researcher in light scattering field.

Book Description

Every life form is made up of vibrations that coincide with the harmonic frequency to which all life is attuned. The vibrations of the body easily go out of tune when a person is exposed to physical or emotional stress. VIBRATIONAL HEALING THROUGH THE CHAKRAS provides the most up-to-date information on the use of vibrational tools such as crystals, aromas, sounds, bodywork, and homeopathy to help the body remember its own healthy harmonic resonance. Author Joy Gardner offers this in-depth look at vibrational healing for people interested in improving their own health and well-being, as well as those who want to become practitioners of this gentle art. Explore how to use vibrations to release old dysfunctional patterns in the body-mind and replace them with new patterns that resonate with the body's own healthy frequencies.

5 out of 5 stars Vibrational healing through the chakras.......2007-10-04

Great book. You need to own this book. Gardner has really done her homework. I was amazed how much info is in this book. I actually started in the middle of the book, read a few chapters and now I have started from the front. I have learned a lot of new things, and things I didn't even think about. The only thing I disagree on is where Gardner wrote about Sundances. Perhaps the dances she has been to do no pierce but I have seen piercing and know many who do pierce. Other than that the book in a AA+ in my book. You will not be disappointed in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Packed with Info.......2007-09-06

This book is loaded with very useful information. I've referred several people to it for a variety of reasons.
It is sort of a clearing house for a number of healing modalities so it's useful as an overview. It doesn't offer in-depth information on any of the subjects covered, but has many references for further reading and research.
I would catagorize this book as a starting point if one is wanting to learn about healing with light and color, sound, crystals or aromatherapy.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER in Vibrational Energy.......2006-11-12

This is a all in one compendium of Vibrational Energy healing techniques. The author has a candid way to relate emotional defiant feelings and also reviews all the technical knowledge behind the facts in a "oh so simple language". I've already recommended it to 4 other friends (2 of which are healers). I love this book and I love you Joy!!!!
Thank you giving us as a gift, a share of your knowledge!!!

5 out of 5 stars Vibrational Healing.......2006-04-25

Joy Gardner does not just write about the various healing modalities - she has spent a lifetime working with them. Vibrational Healing Through the Chakras is the result of Gardner's years of study, steadfast research, and working with her clients. An open mind, and an open heart, have served her well on her journey, which has included work as an herbalist, crystal healer, death and loss counselor, sound and aromatherapy healer.

Gardner starts out by stating that all of life - animate and inanimate - is, by nature, vibration. The human body is made up of a series of frequencies that form a harmonic and balanced whole when a person is healthy. Physical or emotional stress alters the bodies vibrational nature. The nature of vibrational healing is to help the body remember its healthy vibrational state. Healers use a combination of modalities to help their clients understand the underlying cause of their dis-ease, to release the energies that need to be released, and to realign their energy bodies.

Our chakra system acts as the "control center" for our energy systems. When the chakras are balanced, our bodies experience their natural harmonic resonance, and we experience a state of good health. The ideal is for all seven chakras to be open and balanced, with no one chakra operating in an "in charge" mode, unless it was so indicated (and this would be for a limited time period). Gardner presents excellent background information on vibrational therapy, including work by people like Nobel biochemist Ilya Prigogine, neurophysiology and psychology teacher Dr. Valerie Hunt.

It is interesting to read Gardner's discussion of the chakra system, which can be found incorporated into many different cultures. Reading this book was like taking a walk back in time for me, with names like Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Barbara Ann Brennon and other researchers/healers peppering the pages. The placement of the chakras, the parts of the body that they govern, their spinning nature and color associations are all presented in a very straightforward manner.

Each modality is covered in its own section, for easy reference. In the section on light, color and frequencies Gardner begins with the statement that every sound we hear is filter through the three primary sounds of our nerves, muscles and blood. Everything that we see is filtered through our personal electromagnetic aura. There is an excellent in depth section presented on the electromagnetic spectrum, and how it functions. One of the things that I found very interesting in this chapter was how important sunlight is to us, and how important it is to not wear any form of glasses when we are in sunlight, unless we must. Cellular response to both light and color is also addressed here.

In the section on color, Gardner begins by commenting on the ability of color to bring joy into our lives. (Conversely, in the well documented area of SAD, lack of sunlight has been shown to have the ability to bring on depression.) Color healing has as its goal the strengthening of each color in our aura. Working with color-charged water (something so simple that I had never even heard of, or thought of!), and the use of specific colors in specific areas of the face (which acts as a microcosm of the body) are only a couple of the ways that Gardner presents for placing color in our lives.

Healing with voice (sound) is something that I have worked with myself, and was one of my favorite chapters. Mystics from many cultures agree upon the absolute power of sound. Sound has a very spiritual connotation - it carries the history of a people through their song and dance, a venue that to our discredit we are allowing to fade away. Toning, sounding, or what is termed the "primal scream" is on way of releasing bent-up energy from our bodies (energies that are being held in our muscles and bones). Through systematic abdominal breathing, we can easily clear and ground our systems. I am definitely a chart person, and there is an excellent chart at the end of this chapter associating the seven chakras with specific colors, notes and tones.

In the section on aromatherapy, Gardner goes into the spiritual and magical uses of aromas, such as burning incense or wearing perfume. Essential oils carry specific frequencies, which can be used as aids in healing. One of the things that I appreciated about this chapter was the precautions about the use of essential oils - how to best use them, and when not to use them. Recipes are given for creating oils for specific use, such as the prevention of fleas in animals and the removal of odors, as well as for healing.

In the section on healing with crystals, Gardner goes into the spiritual and cultural use of crystals, which include healing as well as acting as carriers for wisdom. (In my practice as a Tarot reader, I have my clients hold rose quartz crystal during their readings. It acts to open their hearts to the reading, it acts to protect them, and to carry the wisdom from the reading home with them.) I loved the lists that were presented for building a Beginners Kit, and a Crystal Healer's kit. There is also a common sense view on cleaning/clearing crystals, and their use as jewelry (with some interesting indications on when NOT to wear certain stones). Basic layouts are presented for working with clients and crystals for healing/balancing, and with crystals in association with specific chakras.

At the end of the book is a comprehensive glossary and recommended reading list.

Between the hard line research presented here, and the stories Gardner shares from her own life, and from her clients lives, this is an excellent book. A good place to start when investigating vibrational healing, and a good book to have for reference purposes. Students of all levels will find this material interesting, and easy to place into use in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-01-19

I got this for my boyfriend for Christmas (he's the technical director for our theatre company) and he said it's a great book. I was hoping it would have more pictures of stages with different lighting designs (you know, like pictures taken during performances so you could see the designs in action), but a lot of the pictures are more technical -- diagrams and things. There are still a lot of really neat pictures though, and out of all the books I looked at getting for him, this is hands-down the best one I found. It's hard to find good lighting books, but I think most of the reviewers were correct when they said this is the best book on the subject, and well worth the money. It's also an attractive enough book that it can make a good coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best lighting book I have ever looked at........2005-12-21

Keller is an absolutely amazing designer. The photos in this book will open up your eyes to the realm of possibility of lighting composition as a fine art. The techincal info is extremely helpful and I would suggest all people who are interested in lighting design buy this book. There are better books out there on the theory of design, but not as colorful as this one, which makes it stand out for me.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Beautiful Book...........2005-03-11

Readers here should note that this is a book concerned with the "European Aesthetic" and techniques of Theatre Lighting.. not to say that it doesn't apply in the US - it does! - but it's not how "Theatre Lighting" is usually taught in the USA! But as I'm from Europe - I say, if you're REALLY interested in the full range of possibilities of theatre lighting, this book will OPEN your eyes to more options!! MUST read. Worth every penny. ChrisP.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2004-01-23

Wow is all I can say. This book is expensive but worth it for the photographs alone. Before I read anything I flipped through and digested all the pictures. The section on color theory is amazing. What more can I say but that this book is amazing?

4 out of 5 stars Pictures are worth it.......2003-11-10

This book may not have all the LD nuts and bolts that one is looking for but the photos of the lighting are worth the cost.

Yes - all classical (linear) optical concepts are in here, and yes, it's the 'bible', but it's very dated in its content, style and references, generally, and not very practical to use.

I wish Hecht - or someone like him - would re-write this classic as a more advanced version of his book.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible.......2007-07-05

Amazing book. It's the bible of geometric optics. Have everything you might need.

Needs a little previous knowledge, but which book doesn't?

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Science of Optics.......2004-09-26

I read this book in the late sixties, when some of my fellow engineers built and tested an acoustic lens for a developmental company. Born & Wolf were well-acquainted with antenna aperture theory, and were among the first to write that the human eye could resolve 5X better than aperture theory would predict. This they credited to involuntary eye movements called flicks and saccades, which when combined with the brain's ability to do signal processing, was able to produce much better resolution than would have been predicted by the diameter of the retinal rods. In many ways the book gives testimony to God's wonderful gift of vision with color, depth, clarity, and order.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-03-14

It is just a rare book on physical optics based on Maxwell equations. Rarely a book states the assumptions, the validity of the equations, the principles and how the equations arrived. Certainly, it is a great book for postgraduates and researchers in physical optics not so for undergraduate students who don't want to go through all the mathematics.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2002-12-13

This book is a classic with all problems associated. Half of the reference quoted have been written before the WWII. Very useful if you like to quote original papers. This book cover most topics of the classical optics but hardy cover modern topics.

However, it is hard to read and use a weird notation. Certainly not useful for rapid referencing. Like the bible, use it only when you have serious problem to deal with.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific little book to start with - and continue to use.......2007-07-11

This book is a little gem - and it costs next to nothing.

It's a beautifully concise and remarkably clear introduction to the main principles of modern optics - the ones that you are going to need over and over again as you continue into the subject.

This book gives you a great overview and set of basic foundations for every-day modern optics. I return to it often for little insights and reminders, even after 37 years in the business.

5 out of 5 stars For the price Great.......2006-08-15

Great book to revise theory on Dual nature of light. Its like a nice handbook on optics. A full blown version would be very even nicer, with a math section to remind 'old' engineering like myself.

One word of caution, I think some graduate school background in Physics and Math is needed for engineers. I am an engineer (
I have a Phd, therefore it was easy for to me follow as I was reading), so I look at things slightly differently than Physicists.

4 out of 5 stars Decent, economical book for optics.......2006-05-11

I bought this book while taking an optics course using Hecht's Optics 4th ed. I found Fowler's book to be fairly useful, especially since I got to see optics from two different perspectives. The one really good thing about this book is it's price, and makes it a good reference book. The downside is that since it's quite short, it doesn't cover everything, moves fairly fast, and has no examples. For the price I paid, however, I am quite satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Text.......2006-03-27

I was fortunate to have a physics professor use this text in his undergrad class. At the time, I considered optics as a mere curiousity. Well, I enjoyed the book and course enough to continue with the subject, eventually getting a PhD in Optical Physics. Never regretted it. I still rely on Fowles as a frequent reference, especially when deriving Fresnel eqns from Maxwell's eqns, solid state refresher, and intro to quantum theory.

3 out of 5 stars There Are Superior Books!.......2004-04-10

This book by G.R. Fowles sufficies for one or two all-nighter studying sessions where a massive review of physical optics is needed.

The advantages to the book are that it is concise and attempts to cover a small fraction of the mathematics behind physical optics. Yet, there are some mistakes, such as an incorrect presentation of the forward Fourier Transform in the first chapters.

As far as the explanations and motivations for modern theoretical and applied optics, this book does not compare to "Optiks" by Born and Wolfe.

In essence, the books by Born or Hecht make this book the 'engineers reference' in the world of academia.

this is an excellent resource for teachers or parents. experiments are fun and easy to do.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes learning physics fun!.......2006-03-15

I would highly recommend Janice VanCleave's Physics For Every Kid. I am a 6th & 7th grade science teacher and have used activities from this book numerous times. There are so many tough concepts in physics and sometimes all it takes is a simple activity that the kids can see. The way I use the activities in this book, along with the others in this series, are to set them up as stations and have the kids rotate through them. It's an easy way to create hands-on learning and the kids LOVE it! This book is divided up into these categories: electricity, magnets, buoyancy, gravity, balance, flight, simple machines, inertia, motion, light, heat, and sound. I think the activities in this book are intended for grades 4-6, but could be adapted for younger or older kids. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Physics is Fun.......2000-10-16

This book is just right for introducing physics concepts to children in the 8-12yrs. age range. My students prefer learning the concepts by "doing" rather than by just reading about them in a science text.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2000-01-01

I was very disappointed by the lack of information. The experiments (this book is entirely experiments - which I disliked) take a long time to set up. Even if they work (which they often don't), they will often only demonstarate a simple concept that could be explained in one paragraph. A complete waste of money. I would recomend "Physics the easy way" by Robert L. Lehrman (Barron's Educational Series, Inc.) over this book any day.

Book Description

FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE PERFECT FAMILY...

Haley Lambert has moved back to her Kansas City childhood home to care for her orphaned niece, Molly-and to find the monster who murdered her own sister. Molly may have witnessed her mother's murder, but whatever the little girl saw on that fateful night, she isn't talking. Now, with the killer still loose, another game of hide-and-seek is about to begin.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A definite hit!.......2007-03-04

Molly won't talk. Her mother, Monica Ridge, is dead and Molly may be the only witness to her horrific murder. Haley Lambert is Monica's sister and determined to do whatever it takes to take care of Molly and ensure Monica's killer is caught. Haley quickly finds herself entangled in a relationship with psychologist Grey Banes while struggling to learn how to cope with a mute eight year old. Meanwhile, a killer is still out there... and watching Haley and Molly.

WITHOUT A SOUND is a superb thriller. Carla Cassidy keeps readers on their toes with this well developed tale. The character development is particularly strong, as one feels Haley's anguish over coping with Molly's grief. Haley's own growth as a character is paramount to this book and Carla Cassidy handles the situation well. I particularly like the concept of the kites versus the rocks as it makes the various personality types really come to life.

WITHOUT A SOUND is sweetly sensual. The relationship between Grey and Haley adds a bit of romance to this suspenseful tale. The mounting intrigue keeps the reader thoroughly engaged. I particularly like the way Carla Cassidy adds in the killer's thoughts with a single page of bold print interspersed periodically in the book. This adds to the suspense without giving away any secrets as to the identity of the killer.

Carla Cassidy always delivers readers a good tale and WITHOUT A SOUND is no exception. While I did guess who the killer is, I didn't really stop to think about it until I took a break from the story late into the book. Ms. Cassidy keeps the reader so involved in the storyline that it's almost a shock to discover you've reached the end. WITHOUT A SOUND is a definite hit!

3 out of 5 stars Another good Cassidy romantic thriller.......2006-12-27

Haley Lambert finds herself returning to her Missouri hometown to care for her niece after her sister is brutally murdered. The police found Molly under the bed next to her mother's body and think that she might be the key to solving the crime - the problem is that Molly is now mute. A second murder, this time Molly's beloved teacher has Haley scared and the police wondering if they don't have a serial killer in their midst.

As Haley sets out to try to heal Molly's psychological scars, she turns to police psychologist Gray Barnes for help in unlocking her memory. He puts her in touch with a private child therapist as Grey no longer takes patients due to a tragedy in his past. Grey cannot seem to say no to Haley who he finds intriguing and sexy, and breaks his rules by getting closer. But the killer suspects that Molly knows more than she is saying, and that it is only a matter of time before being caught - getting rid of Molly and her nosey aunt will be a necessity.

Cassidy keeps the romance light and the suspense heavy as the story unfolds. Though not her strongest novel, it keeps the reader's attention glued to the page and guessing the outcome.

4 out of 5 stars tense romantic suspense thriller .......2006-12-10

Pleasant Hill, Missouri Police Detective Owen Tolliver calls Haley Lambert to inform her that her widowed sister Maggie Ridge has been murdered in her home. Haley immediately quits her job in Las Vegas to fly home to care for her eight years old niece Molly. Owen and his partner Frank Marcelli, next door neighbor of her late sibling, tell her that evidence strongly suggests Maggie probably knew the culprit. They also state that Molly was there at the time of the homicide but will not or cannot speak. They suggest she make an appointment with psychologist Dr. Grey Barnes, but though he empathizes he does not work with patients. Molly knows everyone wants her to speak, but before dying her mom warned "don't make a sound".

Haley worries about what to do with Molly as she has never been the responsible one. She also fears her attraction to Grey who reciprocates her feelings. Though Molly is seeing Dr. Tredwell, Grey is there for the child and her aunt. As they fall in love, neither realizes someone else is there for Molly, but that person plans to kill the child before the little girl can identify her mom's killer.

WITHOUT A SOUND is a tense romantic suspense thriller in which clues are provided as to who the killer is, but are cleverly disguised by Carla Cassidy to keep the audience guessing and reading. The lead couple is a fine pair with both having trepidation over adult love for one another, but not so towards Molly even if Haley fears she will fail at providing stability for her niece. The killer's motives seem weak and overly used in fiction, but no one will care as this is an exhilarating tale.
