My dentist had this book in his office. After reading through many of the topic headings, I just had to get it. Now that I have it, I can't put it down. This book explains the difference between traditional and alternative med. as well as the different approaches to alternative medicine. It also directs you where to get more information on the subject you are look at.
It is the most comprehensive book on the subject, I have found so far. If you want to learn more about alternative medicine, this book will be a good pick.

I think this book is excellent!It goes into in-depth details to explain how different therapies work for different health problems. Different conditions are also listed from A-Z & with explanations of them. Different alternative treatments are listed & which type of natural medicine or natural doctors/therapies to go with.

From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.
For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.
She was also going blind.
Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)
She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)

If you have high blood pressure or just want to stay alive, buy this book. This is by far the most informative book on the market about heart health.
I bought this book after my dad had a stroke and it helped me to understand why strokes happen and how to prevent them. Everything about heart health is covered. The book includes scientific studies about which supplements to take and which to avoid.
Included is info on oral chelation. Chelation will help to strip the plaque from your arteries. This can be done with a special diet and supplements.
Heart disease is the number one killer in America. You can drop your blood pressure with Co Q 10 and grape seed extract (Tru OPC's). This is all in the book.
Do you take drugs for your high blood pressure? You are increasing your risk for cancer if they are calcium channel blockers! Read the book for the research study info.

If you have heart disease, or are at high risk for getting it, then this book is must reading for you. I found it quite by accident in a book store in New England, but it has changed my whole outlook on heart disease and my hope of returning to a normal life following a quadruple bypass operation in January of this year. In chapter after chapter you learn of ways to control, or even reverse, the progression of the disease. The chapter of Vitamins tells of the vital role of antioxidants, a role that is only now being confirmed and used by the established medical community. The chapter on IV EDTA Chelation therapy will astound you with it's implications. I have read it from cover to cover and find it totally fascinating. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this subject.

I like that it has so much information all in one place, however much of the information in this book can be found on the internet (although with A LOT more work). This book gave me a much appreciated focus to my cancer research.
There are breakthoughs that the book does not cover (for example fungal infection) and it was written when the understanding of prions (the cause of mad cow disease for example)and their role in health risk was only beginning.
Would like to see a more updated version, almost 10 years old, a more recent version could only be better.

With a working diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer, this book gave me HOPE and DIRECTION. Statistics say: One in two men and one in three women will face cancer. IF POSSIBLE, be prepared in advance to know what course you would take. BUT, if you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer, have courage! There are MANY choices BESIDES surgery, radiation and chemo. Better choices! This enormous book will educate you.
Don't miss the AMAS test on pages 702-705: an accurate blood test that can detect ANY cancer up to 19 months BEFORE conventional medical tests for cancer can find it! This test gave me GREAT PEACE of MIND as it ruled OUT cancer for me before my surgery to remove a grapefruit-sized endometrioma (NON-malignant). Praise the LORD!

Im a 33 year old young woman, who was diagnosed with advance local breast cancer 5 months ago today (24 May 2001, date of diagnosis). I was fortunate enough to have a close friend in the US who know of this book, due to working with one of the doctors who are published.
This book has become my Bible and has literaly saved my life. Im sitting here tonight in the wee hours of the night to let you know that today I have no turmors and am living cancer free. Five months ago I have 4 tumors all at approx 4cm each, today they are all gone, by the grace of God and his direction led me to this book which in turn gave me the information, the wisdom and guaidence to get through this tragic disease that so many people, possibly thousands world wide die from.

This massive (1116 pages) book is published by the editor of the magazine 'Alternative Medicine.' The first section consists of richly detailed accounts of the successful cancer treatment plans of 23 respected alternative physicians from Robert C Atkins to Charles B Simone. Part 2 is a fundamental explanation of the nature, causes, politics and prevention of cancer. I have never read a better 225 pages on the subject. When you come closer to understanding the conditions that precede cancer you are empowered to change those conditions and assume control over your own body. The final section presents alternative therapies one by one from nutrition, botanicals, and metabolic factors to physical and energy support therapies ranging from ozone and thermal (infrared heat) to acupunture and magnetic. In all, a finely-written explanation of a life-and-death topic meant for those who have cancer, their friends and families who refuse to give up and, who knows?, maybe even your doctor! This is a book I run to every time an acquaintance is diagnosed. I learn about the specifics of their condition and the hope that exists beyond the conventional.

This book is a must for anyone who suffers from chronic headaches or migraines. It covers not only treatments, but also guides you through the causes and what parts of the body are responsible. Complete descriptions of every type of headache and many examples of ways to treat them fill the pages in an easy to read manner. This is the best book I have read on headaches, and being a migraine researcher and sufferer, I highly recommend it.

Burton Goldberg emphasizes that his newest book, Weight Loss: 17 Smart Ways to Permanently Shed Unwanted Pounds, is not just another diet book. It's about improving your health by learning to eat in a balanced way. Well-known in the field of alternative medicine, Goldberg says that "unlike the countless fad diets, alternative medicine recognizes that one size does not fit all." Each person is different, with different biochemistry, and has gained weight for different reasons.
Goldberg starts with a general discussion of diets and why they don't work for most people. He describes some of the serious health problems associated with being overweight, and explains what causes weight gain in general terms.
He then gets into specific information about those causes. He discusses things like what is eaten and how often you eat, the role of exercise, psychology (eating as a response to stress or boredom, etc.), and chemical imbalances, such as those caused by an underactive thyroid, hormones, allergies, yeast infections, and parasites.
Goldberg explains how to customize a diet to fit your needs, including basic information on the components of food, like fats and carbohydrates, the role of nutritional supplements, and alternative medicine therapies for correcting chemical imbalances. He also includes information on detoxification.
The format of the book allows readers to easily turn to the pages that apply to their particular situations. Medical words and special terminology are clarified in "Quick Definition" boxes in the margins. Whenever a test or procedure is suggested, contact information in included in a box on that page.
Goldberg says his book "is less about dieting and more about regaining a state of health--good health is the key to weight loss." This book is amazing. There are so many things that can cause you to gain weight or have a problem losing weight. They cover such things as: thyroid disorders, enzyme deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies.
If you have a thyroid problem, this book is one of the best at explaining how your thyroid works, which supplements to take and why. Many people take too much iodine and actually suppress their thyroid function. There are many herbs that actually will support your thyroid and stimulate hormone release naturally.
The chapter on food allergies was enlightening. Many Americans are allergic to wheat and corn and bloat up when they eat them. Wheat is actually a very addictive substance, it affects the serotonin levels in your brain in the same way some drugs do.

I've struggled most of my adult life with the same 30 pounds that I never quite seemed to lose until reading this book. This book gave me the tools to understand my weight problem at a level beyond counting calories or following the latest fad diet.
This book contains a wealth of information about how the body functions; contributing factors to weight loss/gain; an overview of all the popular weight loss programs; and valuable resources if you want to follow-up any of the ideas or programs.
I highly recommend this book.

EVERYONE should be forced to read this book concerning their health, regardless of their weight. It's about your health, and how what you don't know CAN hurt you. People need to know if their livers, kidneys, or colons are filled with toxins and are virtually breaking down their body systems day by day, for years, causing everything from cancer to depression and anxiety. This book is FULL of information, from MANY TOP ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE DOCTORS, all giving their opinions and experiences. I found it fascinating....and inspiring!
Interesting, but questionable.......2001-05-14
There are some interesting ideas in this book, but it is far too difficult to figure out which recommendations are safe and will work as promised. The book includes methods to diagnose (questionable) medical conditions that lead to weight gain along with advice on ways to deal with the condition. The diagnosis often requires ordering self-administered medical tests through various mail-order companies or having a test done by a doctor. I haven't tried, but I think my doctor would resist if I requested stool analysis for parasites, iridology (study of the iris of the eye), or electrodermal screening. I am concerned that someone might try to self-diagnose whether the cause of his/her weight problem is a yeast infection, toxic liver, toxic colon, or toxic lymph with normal or questionable medical tests, and then spend a fortune to fix it with potentially harmful supplements or regiments. For example, one program to detoxify the liver includes drinking "as much apple juice or cider as possible" for five days while following your usual diet, and then drinking 2 teaspoons Epson salt in water and 1/2 cup of olive oil (960 calories!) on day six and another 2 teaspoons Epson salt on day seven. It does not say to check with a doctor first and there are no warnings about hypertension.
Some of the suggestions are interesting and may even work, but many of them seem questionable and downright dangerous. The trouble is knowing which ones are worth trying, which ones are harmful, and which ones are a waste of money. Initially, I was intrigued because this book included information and advice beyond the standard "eat less and exercise more," but I become very concerned about the reliability of any of the information when so much of it was wacky.

I am a huge fan of DK reference books and this book did not disappoint - beautifully set out, utterly readable and throughly researched. I have taken this book out of the library again and again and finally decided that I just couldn't do without my own copy. How much do you know about rolfing, tragerwork or the Feldenkrais method? This book gives you an overview of all sorts of therapies and it's colourful pages inspire you to study them all - if only I had enough hours in the day!!

They maintain that many conditions connected with old age are the cumulative effects of lifestyle habits rather than a natural part of aging. Their emphasis is on the quality of later years and continuing good health, rather than in merely increasing the number of years lived. Very informative about treating arthritis naturally. Allowed me to consider causes for arthritis that I would have never considered without the book. All around great tool for anyone who is frustrated with the lack of alternative care out there in the medical community.
