Book Description
Tony Attwood's guide will assist parents and professionals with the identification, treatment and care of both children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome. The book provides a description and analysis of the unusual characteristics of the syndrome and practical strategies to reduce those that are most conspicuous or debilitating. Beginning with a chapter on diagnosis, including an assessment test, the book covers all aspects of the syndrome from language to social behaviour and motor clumsiness, concluding with a chapter based on the questions most frequently asked by those who come into contact with individuals with this syndrome. Covering the available literature in full, this guide brings together the most relevant and useful information on Asperger's Syndrome, incorporating case studies from the author's own practical experience as a Clinical Psychologist, with examples of, and numerous quotations from people with Asperger's Syndrome.

The ONE.......2007-08-25
If you are going to buy only one book about Asperger's Syndrome, this is the one. Tony Atwood presents the information clearly and fully. After reading it cover to cover, I frequently refer back to this book for straightforward and accurate information.
Limited information.......2006-11-10
While the information is incontrovertible as it pertains to assessing signs in the development of children, there is scarce information for assessing and living with adults. While I could identify symptoms in the history of my adult child, living with an adult with AS one looks for avenues of treatment and/or perspective. I found the latter to be sorely lacking.
Start Here.......2006-08-04
This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was. Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's. He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world. It has really helped me understand myself and my children better. Well done! I can't wait to see more from him.
At the very top of my list.......2006-06-15
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.
Aperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals.......2006-06-04
This is a good book to help you better understand asperger's syndrome and high functioning autism. It defines the basic symptoms and discusses areas that are problematic. Goes through some great social skills techniques and career ideas too.

Lots of Information in an Easy to Read Book.......2007-08-27
As an Occupational Therapist I focus on the obstacles my students face in their everyday lives and particularly in school. Often my students have received a diagnosis of ADHD but actually present with symptoms that, in my opinion, are better represented by other disorders such as Aspergers and Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Dr. Kutscher's book emphasizes the co occurence of various disorders and confirms that a single diagnosis is the exception and not the norm in these complex students.
The book is packed with information that includes essential vocabulary and concepts, web sites, and reference to experts in research and treatment. While Dr. Kutscher jokes about how he may be oversimplifying concepts and brain function, he actually includes many key concepts that can greatly clarify the struggles of children in the syndrome mix. Some examples of the information presented in the book that, I believe, would enlighten teachers, pediatricians, parents, etc. include the following: the demoralizing result of receiving a zero on a school paper;the Connor's checklist;contextual clues and reading; phonological dysfunction and early signs of dyslexia;Fry's Instant Word List; establishing a hand dominence by 2; the 4 areas of communication;Theory of Mind; an adult using "child speak" to help a child develop social skills; social stories; using the child's special interests to engineer friendships; and sensory integration dysfunction. If the reader takes advantage of the suggestions in the Further Reading section then more in depth knowledge of subjects that are only touched upon in the book can be obtained.
Dr. Kutscher reminds us not to treat these complex children as typical because they are not. One can view them as having a wonderful uniqueness or as having a disability that needs to be accomodated for. I agree it is very important not to expect typical behaviors from these children. For them to become all that they can be and to have good self esteem, they need special consideration and help.I enjoy working with these children and I am often impressed by their uniqueness and gifts.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!.......2007-07-30
I want to know how the author knew my kid to a "T" without ever having met him! This book was amazing and tied together several of my son's challenges in ways that no one ever had before! Instead of dealing with each "diagnosis" in isolation, they were related to one another and the interactions - positive and negative - were examined. Just knowing why something that "should" work didn't - in such clear and reasonable language - takes SO MUCH of the stress off of us as parents, advocates and caregivers.
The language, terminology and humor made this a very accessible and comfortable read. The density of information made it a reasonable slow but very rewarding read. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any parent, teacher, grandparent, friend or cargiver of a child (or adult)with any of the neurodevelopmental disorders it covers. You'll most likely find out that the picture is more complex but definitely more manageable and less frustrating when all the variables are considered.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!
Expectations fulfilled to the max.......2007-06-09

Book Description
When his son, Matthew, was finally diagnosed with autism at 12 years old, Mike Stanton thought the diagnosis marked the end of their troubles. In fact, despite the increase in reported levels of autism, appropriate support and clear information were hard to find. Mike had to teach himself and then attempt to pass on his knowledge and understanding to those who worked with his son. But because Matthew has high functioning autism his obvious abilities helped to disguise his more fundamental autistic spectrum disorder. As a consequence, Mike found that his efforts were not always appreciated. Like many parents, who ought to be a valuable source of information and help to busy professionals, he was sometimes made to feel as though it was him and not his son's autism that was the problem. So he wrote this accessible, informative book which provides a clear explanation of the autistic spectrum and dissects and dispels some of the myths about autistic behaviour and the various types of autism.
Intended for the professionals who work with autistic people and their families and friends, Learning to Live with High Functioning Autism draws on the Stanton family's experiences, and compares it with the experiences of others, to offer an honest portrayal of what living with autism is actually like for all of those involved. It offers an insight into the world of autistic children and the problems that they and their families face. It will provide support and encouragement for families of children with autism, as well as being an invaluable source of information and advice for professionals working with autistic children and their families. Most important of all, it argues convincingly that learning to live with autism is a two-way process. We have to reject all models of intervention based upon coercion and compliance in order to work in partnership with young people with autism.
Customer Reviews:
Must have for those dealing with HFA.......2007-08-04
I've never reviewed a book before, but after reading this one, I just had to. We recently received a high functioning autism diagnosis for our son and were looking for something to help us. This book was a great view into the life of a kid and family with HFA. I'm ordering several to give the the grandparents and aunts/uncles in the family so they'll have a better idea of what's going on. If you or someone you love has a HFA diagnosis, I strongly recommend starting with this book. It's an easy read and gives great insight into how someone with HFA views the world.
A help... Wow do I recognize this kid..........2003-05-22
This book is written by a parent who has been there and done that. Advocating for our children is tough, but it is even tougher when so little is known about their needs by others. When others misunderstand why our children react the way that they do it is nice to be able to turn to some resources that educate and support us in our climb. My daughters principle for next year currently has my copy of this book. He admits that educators do not have a whole lot of knowledge base for dealing with these differently wired children. It was nice to have something to hand to him, and say here read this, then you'll have a better idea what we are facing in giving this sweet child what is needed.
More awareness is needed.
A truly excellent book!.......2000-11-09
This book crams a tremendous amount of insight and information into a very 128 delightful pages! This is the book I recommend most highly for those who want to understand the dynamics of a child's autism. If you can read only one book about autism, this should be the one!
As a father, Stanton is able to able to add a great deal of personal insight to his excellent treatment of the science and medine of autism. The book is readable, yet deals with the issues in a sophisticated and very sensitive manner. The chapter on "Myths and Insights" is especially recommended.
THIS BOOK IS A KEEPER.......2000-09-15
I was surprised when I first saw the size of this book. It seemed too small to cover such an important topic but I was wrong. This book is not only outstanding in its content but beautiful in its simplicity making it easy yet important reading for anyone working with an Autistic child.
Mr. Stanton's beautiful and clear description of Autism offers tremendous insight into the daily lives of these children and the need for parents to be involved in the education process if our children are to reach their full potential.
He also offers an understanding of how an Autistic child sees the world. Any teacher, family member or concerned friend can not help but benefit from reading this book. I will be keeping multiple copies of this book in my home library so that I can offer them as gifts to anyone who needs a greater understanding of this condition.
Thank you, Mr. Stanton. This book is a keeper.
