5 out of 5 stars Excellent if it si still as good as the edition from 20 years ago.......2005-09-20

I can only review an edition of this book dated at least 20 years ago. I bought it when I was in high school (in 10th grade actually) and used it by myself to learn calculus.

When I got to the actual class, I knew basicaly everything and I mean everything that the teacher taught us in 12th grade. I didn't even need anything for my first 2 university level courses in calculus, just took the notes in the class and that was enought to get A+ in both, differential and integral calculus (course 1) and Vetor calculus.

The explanation of derivatives was great and my teache just enhanced my knowledge there. The book was specially great when teaching integration. There was a chapter devoted to that. I skept the section about using tables for integration and only learned a few basic formulas. The book taught the methods and still now, after 20 years, I can integrate pretty much anyhing without any difficulty at all.

If the current edition is as good as it was 20 years ago, then this book is definitely a winner.

1 out of 5 stars A totally ineffective method of teaching Calculus.......2005-02-25

I am a student at CSUSB and I have had to use this book for 3 quarters of Calculus. At the school all the professors say the book is horrible and can't wait until the department changes. In 2005 they finally changed the book to Caculus by Larson, Hostetler, Edwards. It is ironic in desperation I asked a fellow student how he was handing the problems of this book. He said that he borrowed a book from his friend who said the book was excellent. It turned out that it was the book written by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards. I then obtained a copy for myself and found the book to be excellent.

Stein's and Barcellos's book has very poor explanations in the chapters and very few examples to explain to you the concepts. Whereas Larson's book has excellent explanation of concepts and follows it up with good examples that make the concepts easy to understand. At the present we are studying the disk and washer methods of finding volume. Stein covers these topics in approximately 3-4 pages of very poor explantions. The Larson book had 2 chapters on the subject and 9 pages just on the 2 methods. I currently have an A in the last quarter of Calculus and I attribute that to using the book by Larson.

As you can see I can not say enough bad about the book by Stein and Barcellos. Good luck and I hope you make the right choice, but don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant method.......2004-05-30

This book is literally the best basic calculus text you can possibly get. Anyone wanting to start learning calculus NOW should get this. No real previous mathematical knowledge is necessary. There are several appendices on algebra and series etc. The book discusses trigonometry, so you can learn the book practically without knowing a thing. The "feeling" of the book is inexplicable. Reading this book really gave me an true understanding of basic calculus. Excellent for people like me who need proofs (especially visual ones) have a solid grasp on concepts. If your only goal in learning calculus is to do well on examinations, this book is definately not for you. You should get "Calculus for Dummies" or something like that. The great thing about the text is that it appeals to almost everyone. If there is a certain chapter you don't care for or doesn't matter to you, for example on methods of graphing, you can just skip it, and it will not do any harm. Highly intelligently organized. If you want some help in you physics class on basic vector algebra, just turn to chaper 18 and just read! This book is full of applications, which is great. It also has several historical notes. The colors make the book very engaging to read. Unless your colorblind, this will help engage your interest. Very adequate spacings on the paper as to keep you clearheaded and focused. The drawings rival those of Picasso. They show calculus to be a LIVELY subject. The examples (inside the chapters) are very helpfull. Stein offers several suggestions on how to solve certain problems. Its a shame; this book does not attract the amount of attention it deserves. I did get stuck a couple times; but that is inevitable. Definately get this one: its a gem to have. I can understand how some people would hate this book; its not very concise. That should not be a hindrance. If you feel there is no need to read on about a subject, skip some pages. At the end of chapters it all comes together with a summary of the most important concepts. The book prepares you for study of calculus-based sciences such as physics, and for more advanced mathematical topics as well. I worship this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for basic calculus ...........2004-05-25

This book is the best place to start to learn calculus. It starts from very basic principles and also contains some more advanced stuff like Stokes Theorem etc. Some readers may find that the book contains too many basic trivial explanations, but I see this as a strength. When you start learning calculus, I think it is a good idea to explain even the trivial, to make sure that you have a good understanding of really everything. I am sure that most readers will benifit from this, even those already having some more advanced math knowledge. Yes : even this latter group will appreciate the benifits of this book, they can always skip some explanations but will benifit from the very clear exposition of more advanced concepts like Stokes Theorem etc ... Myself for instance, I like the more rigorous and abstract math like "real mathematical analysis", but when I need to refresh some calculus and geometry techniques, this book is really the best to sharpen my intuition and understanding of calculus.
Another excellent feature of the book : this book should serve as an example for the layout of math books : it contains a lot of spacing (handy to make personnal annotations), contains a lot of examples, and contains a lot of excellent pictures illustrating a concept... Also some nice anecdotes are added to keep the reader interested. I wish all math books were like this.
If math is not your strongest skill and you need to learn some higher calculus this book will be your excellent companion helping you to gain the insight and intuition you need. If you are busy with more advanded and abstract math, this book also has something to offer to you : this book serves as a fallback point for sharpening your mathematical intuition and refreshing some concepts that you might have forgotten.
Small drawbacks are : -Some more advanced concepts (like Stokes Theorem) are very well explained, but others are explained without proof (convergence of series...) or with simplified proofs (for instance limited to two dimensional cases, though excellent again to gain mathematical intuition). Maybe this is acceptable for a calculus course, but may disappoint the reader who is looking for rigour.

Conclusion : perfect book to gain insight in calculus, it suits well on the shelf of everybody busy who needs calculus...

1 out of 5 stars The worst math book ever.......2004-02-08

If you have to buy it, buy it. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague. I was forced to buy it because this ass was a professor at UC Davis and made all Davis math students buy it. Even the other professors hated it, but we were stuck with it becuase of his tenure.

If you don't mind wading through subtly persistent salesmanship throughout the book, the Curves guide has a wealth of practical advice that clearly continues to help women around the world achieve better health and lasting weight loss. Packed with information-—including multiple diet plans for different body types and different stages and tests designed to lead to the proper combination—-the first few chapters are a little overwhelming. Are you sensitive to calories or carbohydrates? Need to lose more or less than 25 pounds? Hold steady—-the hugely popular 30-minute exercise program (for either home or health club) is utterly simple, well designed, and accompanied by thorough instructions and helpful illustrations. Shopping lists and recipes are included in later sections, which vastly simplify your life once you've determined which diet and which stage you're starting; straightforward tips at the very end provide the key highlights that make the program a success. Still, some readers may take offense at the regular mentions of the record-breaking franchise and the assorted brand-name products (protein shakes, official club membership coupon) and the somewhat over-the-top customer profiles, all of which are from women who lost over 100 pounds through the Curves centers. Underneath the hype, you'll find a solidly crafted program offering plenty of long-term benefits—-even if you don't ever set foot in a health club. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Close to 2 million women have discovered Gary Heavin's secret to permanent weight loss at the nearly six thousand Curves fitness and weight-loss centers around the country. There, they've discovered that in thirty minutes, three times a week, and without a restrictive diet, they can take their weight off and keep it off for good. Now, for the first time, Gary Heavin brings this remarkable program directly to you in his first book for the general public. Here's what you'll find in Curves:

* the exercise program: thirty minutes a day-no more than three times a week;
* a combination of strength-training and aerobics that can be done at home or at the Curves center;
* a temporary diet plan that produces permanent results;
* questionnaires to determine if you're calorie sensitive or carbohydrate sensitive, helping you to individualize your food plan;
* a unique maintenance plan that allows you to eat full portions after the initial weight loss; and
* a coupon for one free week at any Curves center in the country. (good for one-week membership at any Curves location, new members only, must be 18 years or older)

Gary Heavin's revolutionary plan reprograms the metabolism to absorb 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day. That means full portions without gaining weight. And you'll see major results within two weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Presentation of Weight Control.......2006-12-06

Curves has been a boon to many women struggling with weight management. This book is an easy read and a great companion to Mary El-Baz's "Transform Your Core 6-Week Workbook."

2 out of 5 stars Curves On The Go.......2005-09-27

This book is very helpful and it is a companion to the Curves Book(which I already have). This book makes it easy to follow your plan when you are on the go.

3 out of 5 stars Curves (book) by Gary Heavin.......2005-09-16

This book explains the philosopy of the Curves exercise salons. It also
gives additional exercise methods and a diet program. The diet program is hard to understand because it onlyl gives shopping lists for weekly food amounts without suggesting daily menus.

4 out of 5 stars exercise!.......2005-01-04

I attend curves for women. I skimmed over the book but did not use it and still achieved good results. The book may be helpful for those who have a lot to lose. I would like to say that the machines, when used propery, are good. Weights are not needed BECAUSE THEY ARE HYDROLIC! The whole point of the machine is so that you push yourself. And to one person's opinion that it was only 30 seconds, how much good could it do, well push yourself, keep up your heartbeat, work the machines the right way, and stick with it. The more you work at something, the easier it gets, so push yourself again. My mother and sister used the book and found it very helpful and had even better results than me. Even if you don't "diet" your health will improve due to the exercise. The book was made to be incorperatied with the Curves exercise. So i would recomend doing both for the best results.

5 out of 5 stars very pleased!.......2004-08-24

I have bought this curves book and bagan going to curves 2 and a half weeks ago. I am a person who has NEVER EVER excersized in any way! I found out I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ect and I was close to 50 pounds overweight when I began. I have lost about 6 pounds nice and slow since I began. I see a difference in my strength and appetite already. Curves is a fun, safe place to work out and the book has very good advice about food and dieting. I tried atkins and it was too strict with the low carb idea. curves seems to take a less drastic approach, for more permenant weight loss. I beleive this because i am losing the weight slower, which means I will keep it off this time! I also originally thought I had no time for excersize..boy was I wrong! 30 minutes, 3 days a week is a peice of cake for people like me who have always been on the go with work and college. I do need to get in more cardio as someone else suggested on here, but I am taking it one day at a time. I plan to increase my excersize slowly, so that i get used to it since I have been so out of shape for 33 years!

Book Description

Today’s managers and investors are bombarded with so many conflicting economic reports and data that it seems impossible to know which way the market will turn until it’s too late. Now, a thirty-five year Wall Street veteran enables managers and investors to stop relying on conventional economic forecasts (which are usually wrong), and confidently analyse how the market will impact their industry, business, or stocks. The author unveils his proven forecasting model—based on just a few key economic indicators—for identifying major directional changes in the economy and adjusting business and investing strategies accordingly. A simpler and more pragmatic approach to forecasting: user-friendly approach draws from empirical observation and first-hand practice rather than abstract economic theories Great timing: will appeal to the many business people and investors who got burned in the dotcom bust because they didn’t see the downturn coming Proven model developed by a bonafide Wall Street sage: Ellis is widely respected as a sage when it comes to analysing economic trends based on over three decades as a successful Wall Street analyst Novel, counterintuitive, accessible: goes against the grain of common wisdom about what really drives the economy and makes practical tools available to a wide audience of practitioners for the first time Appendix B in the book specifically relates the methodology in the main section of the book to possible application in the UK, Canada, Germany, France, and Japan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Take bashing by the theorists wth a grain of salt.......2007-07-22

Another reviewer remarked that this book did not pass the Statistics 101 test. It is true that Ellis provides no supporting data for his ideas.
However, in some of my own work I did find considerable support for one important aspect of the Ellis approach: his suggestion that readers ignore quarterly or monthly percent changes and focus instead on year over year changes.

I, too, look at data year over year. I did not work with the exact same data sets Ellis discusses, but among the sets I did use, I noticed that multi-factor models of stock, bond and commodity returns against economic series showed t-scores below 1.00 when the variables were expressed as monthly returns. The theorists who bash Ellis here know that anything below 2.00 should be deemed suspect. But when, I re-cast the same sets of variables on a year-to-year basis, the t-scores jumped above 2.00, in fact, most were above 5.00 and some were above 10.00. That, or course, doesn't "prove" things (correlation vs. causation, curve fitting, yada yada yada). But it does add support to Ellis' claim that going year-to-year, which removes a lot of noise, can be very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars It is not that simple.......2007-07-20

Don't get me wrong, the book has its merits.
It cuts through hundreds of economic indicators to select a few that make economic sense, telling a convincing story (but oversimplified). It will help mostly people with some market experience but lacking enough flying hours in macroeconomic (big-picture) thinking.

Pros :
1 - Acessible to people without an advanced degree, seeking a non-overly-technical introduction to both macroeconomics and its relation to stock market over time.
2 - Explain everything in a intuitive way
3 - Clearly tells his perspective of "how" and "why" things happen in economics, however some of the causalities he writes in the book may not be a consensus among economists or professional analysts.

Cons :
1 - Oversimplifies Inflation, foreign trade, budget deficits, the role of politics and expectations, global economics
2 - Overstates the importance of "charting" and lacks even the most basic "statistics 101" test.
3 - Macroeconomic history is a lot more complex than this book tries to show, with different monetary policy periods (keynesians in 60s and 70s - monetarists in 80s), different fiscal policies ("anomalies" in the book), productivity growth, shocks, demographics, wars, etc.
How stock market reacts to economic changes is also not that simple and may confuse even smart (but naive) guys who may think they understood a lot of macro-thinking after reading this book..

Bottom line : Book does not add too much to those already in the field. It's a very good introduction to an average investor seeking more macroeconomic knowledge (big-picture investing), but be *very careful* with oversimplification of economic history, hidden unstable relations between variables and not-that-simple theoretical subjects;

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of the Curve.......2007-07-09

This book describe the how the market work in a very concise and simple way. Fantastic. Also maintain a site of market data update.

4 out of 5 stars clear and sensible.......2007-06-06

I am only about 75% finished, but Mr. Ellis has a clear and simple writing style. His arguments are easy to follow and understand. His analysis and data treatment are compelling. I would recommend this book to a junior market analyst (or home investor who would like to understand market forecasting on year/decade time scales).

5 out of 5 stars This book is definitely worth reading........2006-11-08

The author's approach toward economic data is very refreshing, in that he works quite hard at finding data that is predictive of stock market declines. Just the chapter on the "recession obsession", and why its bad for you makes the whole book worthwhile. It really put a lot of economic numbers in perspective, and made me realize it was actually possible to use economic numbers to your advantage.

I would also add that his writing style is very easy to follow. While it definitely helps if you have some background in economics, it is really not necessary.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book. .......2006-07-13

I always enjoy reading books on the venture industry written by professionals with practical expereince because the others are usually do not add much insight. However, not all industry experts write insightful books, but this is an exception. However, the price is a bit steep for less than 400 pages.

I would have given this book the highest rating but "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" is the best book in my opinion. It is not only for entrepreneurs but VCs and anyone else who wants to gain an in-depth understanding of te venture capital industry and process. It may even be too advanced for some entrepreneurs but if you want to understand and do it right, look no further! Be warned: its 600 pages

These two books would go great together because they are both advanced and very insightful, unlike most of the other books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-05-04

Mssrs. Meyer and Mathonet have produced a valuable resource for building and managing a portfolio of venture capital and private equity funds. The book demystifies private equity investing, and presents a quantitative and qualitative approach to the fund selection process. It has been a key resource in the development of our fund, and we reference it often. This book is great for institutional investors, and should be on the shelf of academics as well.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and detailed introduction into the world of PE funds-of-funds.......2005-08-19

This is certainly the best book I found on the modelling and managing of risk for funds-of-funds in private equity. It contains a lot of hints on the currently evolving literature on PE funds-of-funds and describes a complete and integrated approach on how to measure, monitor and manage values and associated risks.

Beyond being the perfect starting point to learn more about this growing market segment, it also provides a lot of input to the practitioner who up to now has not been aware of pragmatic & efficient risk and rating (scoring) models for such funds. While some of the newer papers from academics rather aimed at details or were sometimes exaggeratly sophisticated, this books combines best-practice from theory and practice.

Well done!

this book to anyone who begins learning statistics.

1 out of 5 stars How can they teach you if they don't even know the right answers?.......2007-07-23

I have been using this book to review for the Actuarial exam, and though it has been a few years since I learned a lot of this, even I can see the blatant typos and errors. Basic editing is part of a decent book, and someone did a terrible job on this one. Aside from the typos in the text itself, far too many of the Solved Problems give a wrong answer! It has been maddening to sit and do and re-do these problems to check my work, and I feel that if the easier/beginning sections have this many problems, I will be screwed when I get to the more advanced sections and can't so easily spot the mistakes. I think it is ridiculous that someone put this book out there, trying to help people learn, and couldn't even double check that it provides correct information.

5 out of 5 stars Self-study to enjoy.......2007-04-07

Like other mathematical editions of "Schaum's outlines" the second edition of "Probability And Statistics" is again a book, that is perfectly developed for self-study that leeds you to a fundamental understanding of probability and statistics. Probability and statistics can be difficult subjects for students, and this Schaum's outline is very helpful both for explaining the theory and showing lots of numerical examples and practice problems in these very much related disciplines. Since a knowledge of probability is necessary to thoroughly understand statistics, that subject is tackled first, in the first four chapters. Statistics is addressed in the last six chapters of the book. The narrative of this book is very thorough, and intersperses explanations with worked out examples throughout. The book starts with basic probability, moves on through random variables, expectation, and special probability functions such as the binomial and Poisson distributions. In the statistics half of the book, there are chapters on sampling and estimation theory, hypotheses testing, curve fitting, regression, correlation, variance analysis, and finally the more advanced topic of nonparametric testing. Appendices offer some valuable distributions and tables. Of course, if you need to study these subjects more in depth such as expectation and detection or random processes, you are going to need other books for further study. However, at just over 400 pages in length, this book provides a good introduction to the topics of probability and statistics for a fraction of what many less enlightening textbooks cost and it is ideal for self-study. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I am VERY Happy with this Book - great 4 self-study.......2007-08-01

In order to take an advanced statistics course (since I have been out of college awhile) I have to take a calculus test. They gave me a sample of 60 questions from prior years and recomended a text that cost $180!!!

Well for 1/15 of the price of the expensive text, I can get about 55 out of 60 questions answered through this one. The ones that are not covered in this book pertain to complex integrations - I'll buy the Schaum's Advanced Calc text and get my answers and still have tons of money left over.

*** Another thing is that the first few chapters are an excellent review of pre-calc, something I did not think I would need but it turns out to be more useful than I thought. ****

The covering of some topics, like LaHopital's rule is better than most texts.

I have not encountered typos yet - when I have that that I did - once I plunge into it more - turns out he is right and I was mistaken.

****Having numberous worked out problems and problems with at least the solutions to check yourself is GREAT FOR SELF STUDY ****

Book Description

The yield curve is the defining indicator of the global debt capital markets, and an understanding of it is vital to the smooth running of the economy as a whole. All participants in the market, be they issuers of capital, investors or banking intermediaries, will have a need to estimate, interpret and understand the yield curve. Fund managers that accurately predict the shape and direction of the curve will consistently outperform those that do not.

This groundbreaking new book offers:

Written by an experienced market practitioner, this book is a clear and accessible account of an important financial topic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Synopsis for an Important and Much Ignored Topic.......2007-01-06

If you ever tried to research yield curves, then you will most likely find yourself reading a paragraph or a chapter in at least two books and / or articles. The author's capacity to summarize different bits of information to allow the reader to digest more efficiently this specfic topic is impressive. The book is primarily for an intremediate or expert fixed income person, but he does a good job in the beginning chapters to teach entry level fixed income people. The fixed income universe is divergent in products from bonds, derivative contracts and structured vehicles and it is people like Moorad Choudhry and his talent to amalgamate subject matter that any financial market person should read. All readers will ascertain a top down view of yield curves and if they need to go down to a granular level (i.e. find another book or article), then Choudhry has prepared the reader not to be lost between two trees in a forest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent all-in coverage.......2006-01-11

This book brings together all related points and saves the practitioner from having to buy 2 or 3 books. It covers bond yield, yield curve estimation and modelling, and then brings it all together in a chapter on relative value trading and yield curve spread trading. An excellent, well-written book that I think all government bond and Eurobond traders and portfolio managers will want to check out.

5 out of 5 stars Get this without a doubt!!.......2006-01-11

It is so rare to find an author whose work is aimed at the rank and file of the finance world. Choudhry has excelled himself once again and clearly knows his work. His writing style is quite the most concise yet detailed and also quite convivial. i am quite sure he is an extremely successful person both personally and professionally.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent book about the Yield Curve.......2004-04-21

There have been so many books about the yield curve, and all of them so mediocre. It is good to finally have one that describes and analyses the curve for everyone - money managers, bankers, investment analysts. Written in the author's trademark accessible style, this book is like nothing out there, highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2004-04-03

There have been so many good books written about the yield curve that it is hard to imagine why this one was written. It is actually very similar, if not remarkably the same, to a couple of other books previously published. If you have the better written books on this subject, there is no need to buy this. If you don't have them, buy them instead.

5 out of 5 stars Big Girl Knits.......2007-09-16

This book is just what big Girls who knit need. It's witty, funny and the patterns are lovely and inspiring. Definitely a very well written book.

1 out of 5 stars A bad attempt at a cool idea.......2007-09-10

It is books like this that I really hope inspire others to write better ones - with better patterns, better looking models and a kinder, more creative title.

I have to agree with the other reviewers that the patterns are awful! They have no shape to them, don't lay right and the designs are ugly. After 2 pattern attempts I just gave up. Eventhough I was not to keen on any of the patterns I did want to try one out as a gift.

I find the items suggested in this book to be ones that would be the rejects at stores that majority of larger women would never dare be seen in. Come on! Our clothes have to reflect the abundance of personality and class a beautiful bigger woman usually has!

Would it have hurt to hire models that didn't look so frumpy? What makes an okay looking top become a bad one is if the model looks like she hasn't done her hair or makeup. The models selected for this book provide zero stimulation to the items they are suppose to be inspiring to create. I am not talking about hiring supermodels, but the least thing these models could have done were comb their hair, put some lipstick on and smile and make us think the tops were really fun to wear!

Lastly, I find the book's title unintelligent and frankly offensive. When did a word (big) that we use towards children to encourage them to be mature and respectful become such a negative term towards women's bodies? Society really needs to embrace the words that really describe our bodies... voluptuous, curvy, healthy, etc... Would it have killed the authors to name it "Venus Girl Knits" or "Vivacious Voluptuous Women Knits"?

I really hope this book inspires some more creative bound books in the future. It was a great idea that has so much more potential in the market. I personally do not recommend this one at all.

5 out of 5 stars To all big girl knitters don't miss this one!!.......2007-07-09

This is a wonderful book full of fashionable knits for we big beautiful women. There is an excellent forward with all you need to know about dressing to suit your size and the importance of measuring ourselves correctly.
Although all the patterns are not to my taste, most of them are and I had a hard time deciding what to knit first.
I can't wait for the next one.
Thanks

2 out of 5 stars Abrasive.......2007-06-21

I find this book informative and vulgar. The authors' use of inappropriate inuendoes and offensive language destroyed any desire to support their efforts at having written this book. Sometimes trying to be funny when you are not only makes the attempt worse. As a confident full bodied woman I have no need for such demoralizing humor. The book was returned...and yes I do appreciate the authors' attempts at creating knitting patterns for women of substance.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction into the world of Private Equity.......2005-08-31

This new book gives a very good insight and overview into the world of private equity for the interested student and practitioner.

In fact, it starts from the very basics, explaining the market and the nature of PE fund investments, presenting the various data providers in the market, and goes on to tread very complex issues like state-of-the-art forecasting & monitoring portfolios, important legal issues, advanced cash flow modelling and risk assessment techniques, funds of funds, CFOs and secondaries.

The authors are both highly renowned experts in the PEF industry, Mr. Weidig as a consultant with various publications regarding funds and funds-of-funds, and Mr. Grabenwarter as head of division for Venture Capital Operations at the EIF.

Both combine theoretical understanding with years of experience in the PE funds market, as well as hands-on experience with building risk management systems for this specific type of financial investment - a combination rarely encountered in the world of PE funds!

5 out of 5 stars Good book........2006-08-18

Most popular textbook on Differential geometry. Feynman once said the most popular one may not be the best, which is not completely true here. If you want another view of differential geometry, Su Buqing's Lectures on Differential Geometry is a great little book.

5 out of 5 stars Best DG book out there.......2005-04-21

This book is rather expensive, but when compared to the other books available, it is not a waste of your money. It has plenty of exercises, many of them with answer or hints in the back of the book, and its exposition is broad, very clear and concise.

It is hard to tell being a math student, but I think anyone with a solid knowledge in multi-variable calculus (Apostol's book would be perfect) or, better yet, who has taken multi-variable analysis course would find this book accessible. One of the advantages of this book is that it is self-contained, so even though it uses, for example, the inverse function theorem (which is something unavoidable for a DG book), it has an appendix on differentiability and continuity which covers this.

The exercises range from easy to very hard, but because of the exposition and of the way the exercises are stated (the tougher ones are many times itemized so that they drive you to the answer) it is rare to find a problem that the reader will not be able to solve upon a little thinking.

The greatest advantage of this book is its clear and well-written exposition. It has very few errors, mostly typographical. It covers a lot of topics and its notation is extremely simple and suggestive, which, believe me, is of great help in a DG book. In short, if you want or have to learn differential geometry, save your time and get this book. As another reader very intelligently put it, there is a reason why this is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars There is a reason why it is a classic........2005-04-03

Before talking about the book itself, let me tell you that I am a mathematician, and when I took a differential geometry course and used do Carmo's book, I already knew I wanted to be a mathematician. So, is this a book for mathematicians? Well, yes, but not exclusively. It is certainly written from a mathematician's point-of-view, and it assumes some maturity on the part of the reader. For instance, the exercises contain very little in the way of drill, and are used to enhance the theory (as pointed out by another reviewer). It seems to me that the author believes that mature readers can provide their own `drill' exercises. So, you won't find many exercises asking for you to find pricipal curvatures for this or that surface, and that other as well; exercises in this book have a theoretical flavor to them. This, of course, makes for some hard exercises, and I do remember spending a lot of time over them, often working together with other students taking the same course. The upside is that we learned the material, and thoroughly. Also, the author provided plenty, plenty of examples. The figures are very well drawn and really allow you to see what is going on - even though these days, with powerful computer packages like Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, and others, any student can provide his/her own pictures. But just because now we can use computers, I wouldn't say the text shows signs of age. It is jus as clear now in its exposition of topics and concepts as it was many years ago. So, even though there are many good alternatives in the market, if I had to teach a course now on this subject, or even better, if I were a student now taking this subject, I would certainly have this book at the top of my list of possible textbooks.

2 out of 5 stars engineers should get another book.......2005-03-16

If you are a mathematician this book probably suits your purposes, BUT if you are an engineer (interested in shell structures for instance) I would recommend "Elementary Differential Geometry" by Pressley.
This book focuses on many sub-topics that are not of interest to an engineer and many of the exercises are abstract and of very little practical value. Also "Elementary Differential Geometry" focuses more on real 3-D shapes and their properties, and thus it is more readable.

2 out of 5 stars Very Difficult.......2004-01-22

Although some claim it is classic, don't expect it to be readable. The book's definitions cna be quite confusing, and it is often difficult to understand many of the definitions or problems without a great deal of effort. If you are using this book for a class, I would reccomend getting a more readable text for reference.
