Customer Reviews:
Great info about Candida and Leaky Gut.......2007-08-31
When I read this book, suggested by my ND, I no longer felt crazy and alone. All the things that you go through when you have Leaky Gut is overwhelming. To hear from someone who went through it and is on the other side is very encouraging! A must read for someone who has Leaky Gut Syndrome, Candida, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or a myriad of symptoms.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
This was packed with information and lots of tips and help. This book had tons of important points and suggestions. If you are toxic (and we all are) you may want to start with this book.
Digestive issues? Read on..........2006-03-22
I thought this book was really helpful for those who are stuggling with their weight or have digestive issues but are unclear why.
The book is organized in sections which make it a breeze to read. The author recounts specific events that happened to her throughout the piece which makes it that much more credible.
Caveat Emptor.......2005-11-13
I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).
There were NO surprises in this book. No new information. Its been around for years.
Some of these remedies might have worked for some people, but from what I can glean from internet discussion groups, most have not found relief from them, including myself, and rarely, if ever, have all the remedies worked on one person.
This book might be on the up and up, but in the end I was left feeling that this was more of an advertisement by a doctor looking for patients, rather than an autobiography.
I would be interested to hear if any of the other posters have found relief from what is in this book, or are they simply running on hope and some sort of validation that they are not really hypochondriacs, but victims of some medical community scam. If not, you've got to wonder if its not just one more scam preying on those in need.
Been there, done that.
Easy, useful reference.......2005-09-10
The book recaps material from other authors,such as Sherry Rogers, M.D. and other experts, in a handy and straight forward way. Having read numerous more complicated books while struggling with fatigue and brain fog, this one was a breath of fresh air (pun intended). It also has significant original material that I had not read elsewhere. All in all, an excellent read.

Book Description
Principles of Combustion, Second Edition is a revision of what was the leading book on combustion engineering. The new edition has been revised to include new theoretical results and measurement techniques of non-intrusive diagnostic methods, contains more material on chemical kinetics during ignition; and is expanded to provide more in-depth treatment of sensitivity analysis and methods for identifying controlling chemical mechanisms. Expanded coverage is combined with the latest results regarding turbulent activity during combustion and the chemical kinetics of flames.

Here's how physician Gerald Ross of the Environmental Health Center in Dallas describes multiple chemical sensitivity, or MCS: "Think of a patient as a rain barrel. The water in the barrel is the total load of environmental pollutants that the body must cope with. Then along comes some other source of stress. But the barrel can't hold it, and it pours out. The overflow represents a health problem ... and you get sick." The consequences of the sickness are severe; lives are radically and sometimes permanently disrupted. And the solutions to 20th-century allergies are painstaking and expensive. Worse, some physicians and psychiatrists say that MCS is all in people's heads, and that these people are being abetted by overzealous scientists who ignore basic scientific principles. You don't have to agree with one side or the other to find the assertions in Allergic to the Twentieth Century compelling, though; in fact, it may go down better if you start it without any preconceived notions.
Customer Reviews:
good read for a concerned layperson.......2005-02-11
5 stars because I couldn't think of an improvement I'd want to make. It's well-written for the understanding of non-health-professionals (I'm one) and seemed like a very comprehensive (for the time, given that recognition of MCS is in its infancy) overview of what appears to be the tip of an iceberg. Rationally, I believe that multiple chemical sensitivity is real, but I don't personally know anyone who is involved, so I have no basis for bias. This book quoted several individuals who have symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity, and their accounts of the desperate measures they must take to not feel rotten really opened my eyes to the possible future for the rest of us.
The doctors who were interviewed and quoted don't all agree on every aspect of the syndrome, which makes their opinions seem more authentic. Some of them have outright antipathy, not just disagreement, over specific points regarding MCS; however, it seemed to me that they all agree that the specialty of allergies (and MCS) is inexact, almost as much art as science. Some of the avant-garde treatments I read about seem fairly dubious, but the results are apparently well-documented. Although relatively few scientific studies have been done, they seemed appropriate and meaningful to me.
This book is neither anti-industry nor "chicken little" in tone, but it certainly added fuel to my back-to-basics, organic-gardening, anti-industry fire. The facts (some statistics) and opinions (from informed health professionals) presented herein constitute a firm, but rational, warning that we may have opened a chemical Pandora's box when we jumped on the industrial bandwagon. The rising incidence of many chronic diseases (cancer, asthma, ulcers, you name it) may be due only to the fact that those people didn't get felled first by typhoid, malaria, or saber-toothed tigers, but I'm still concerned, and I don't think the coincidence of higher cancer rates and widespread use of industrial chemicals is due to chance. This book doesn't spend many pages addressing solutions; it is aimed at illuminating the source of the problem. I'd recommend it, without reservation, to other laypersons who want to expand their understanding, especially to school kids doing research on industrial chemicals or allergies.
Essential Reading for These Times.......2003-04-06
It's a shame this indispensable book has gone out of print because it is one of the best I have read on the subject. Environmental allergies, Sick Building Syndrome, Gulf War Syndrome, or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is the subject at hand, and I think it one of the most important subjects of our time. MCS, despite some doctor's insistence that it does not exist, affects every living thing on Earth. An estimated 40 million Americans already show clear and obvious signs of this illness. The rest of us are undoubtedly affected in less obvious ways. We cannot afford to ignore this problem.
One of the most fascinating parts of this book, which has stuck in my memory for a number of years, is descriptions and interviews with the sickest people alive with MCS. The descriptions of their symptoms and the great lengths they must go to just to try to live their lives is tragic and fascinating and a warning to us all.
Even though you may not know how chemical poisoning is affecting you, it almost certainly is. Sticking our collective heads in the sand will not help us, and will almost certainly allow things to get much worse before they get better. Inform yourself and read this book.
Peter Radetsky has experience writing popular science books, and this one is very readable. He interviews a variety of sick people, scientists, doctors, and psychiatrists with a wide range of opinions on the subject. Though the role of infectious pathogens is fairly well understood these days, the role of toxicity has been almost completely ignored by modern science and allopathic medicine. This topic must blow open, sooner or later. In the meantime, we can inform ourselves and take a tip from the sickest among us. We do not need to wait for mainstream science and medicine to acknowledge or solve problems before we act to protect our own health.
It is too bad this book has apparently not gone to paperback because the subject is so important, and this is such a well-done job on the topic. For little more than the price of postage, you can inform yourself on a topic of great importance that we have only begun to scratch the surface of.
Very interesting, highly readable!.......2000-07-24
I'm an allergy researcher and when I came on this excellent book, I sat down and read it cover to cover. Couldn't put it down. The writer is very good, the information new and interesting, and thought provoking. "Sick Building Syndrome" is quite real and affects many people on a daily basis. I am sad to see that this fine piece of work is out of print. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening :::: from Ten Speed Press
Interesting.......1998-04-10
As someone who has to deal with someone who insists that they have MCS, I found the information quite illuminating. It is truly an interesting book which will make you think of their lives have changed.It really gives a humanizing outlook of someone who has to live in a world where everyone thinks you are crazy.
A Wake-up Call on the Dangers of Environmental Poisoning.......1998-01-01
The author presents well-documented material on a very current controversial subject which is affecting l5% of the population severely, and many more in lesser degrees; creating debillitating illness in productive members of society, causing them to become disabled and unemployed. The tragedy of the message is poignantly spelled out by the author, revealing the AMA's denial of the diagnosis of MCS, which contributes to the distress of patients who must suffer through contempt and lack of care by medical doctors who are influenced by economic dictates and refuse to treat the complex patient. This book is a blessing for MCS sufferers, since it offers hope that it will alert proper politicians and governmental officials to address this issue properly, offer medical care to the Veterans of the Gulf War Syndrome, and implement legislation to prevent further chemical poisoning in our public indoor environment. I highly recommend this book for everyone, to instill awareness of the dangers of chemicals in our environment. This is a very thorough documentation on the subject of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

be a prudent patient.......2005-10-16
very informative about body chemistry in relation to vitamin/ minerals absorbtion as well as "over-priced" legal drugs and why one may be continually ill/ sick.
Note: "side effects" from "meds" (legal drugs) is your bodies way of letting - you know - you have ingested a type of TOXICITY(poison).
Seek supplements, herbs / spices for remedy if at all possible!!!
To your health and good luck!
Right on target.......2001-12-07
I've been severely chemically sensitive for nearly 8 years, and this booklet is the very best explanation of the illness I have ever seen. I'm ordering a big batch to give to friends and family.
Book Description
Chemical Exposures: Low Levels and High Stakes explains how day-to-day variations in chemical exposure may cause unusual and seemingly unpredictable symptoms, including many that have been termed psychosomatic in the past. It describes how everyday, low-level chemical exposures may cause fatigue, memory impairment, headaches, mood changes, breathing difficulties, digestive problems, and a host of chronic unexplained illnesses including chronic fatigue syndrome, Gulf War syndrome, and sick building syndrome. The authors are the first writers to clearly describe and document the process of adaptation, a concept that provides a rational and scientific basis for understanding these symptoms. In the Second Edition of this professionally acclaimed work, the authors offer evidence for an emerging new theory of disease-toxicant-induced loss of tolerance-which may have far-reaching implications for medicine, public health, and environmental policy. Based on a report commissioned by the New Jersey Department of Health that won the World Health Organization's Macedo Award, Chemical Exposures is the most comprehensive book ever written on sensitivity to low level chemical exposure and the many health effects associated with it. This work clarifies the nature of chemical sensitivity, shows how it differs from traditional allergies and toxicity, and suggests how federal and state governments can help those who are affected. The book identifies four major groups of people with hypersensitivity to low levels of chemicals: occupants of tight buildings, industrial workers who handle chemicals, residents of communities exposed to toxic chemicals, and individuals with random and unique exposures to various chemicals. The fact that similar symptoms are being reported by members of these demographically diverse groups not only points to a serious problem, it may also contribute to a better understanding of chemical sensitivity. Included are a number of features that will be invaluable to health professionals: * Clear, concise explanations of technical material * The most extensive bibliography to date on the subject * Tables contrasting different medical approaches * Descriptions of recent research and proposed mechanisms * An annotated bibliographical appendix highlighting illnesses that have been linked to environmental exposures * Policy recommendations for federal and state governments "Clinicians and policymakers would do well to read and heed the advice of this book."-Journal of the American Medical Association "Clinicians, researchers, and policymakers in this field would be well advised to read this landmark book."-American Public Health Association Newsletter "A milestone in the evolution of multiple chemical sensitivity."-Chemical and Engineering News ".groundbreaking and accessible.balanced and scholarly.essential reading for risk assessors, physicians, psychologists, attorneys concerned with toxic torts, public health officials, regulators, government decisionmakers, medical and environmental researchers, as well as laypersons."-Journal of Risk Analysis
Customer Reviews:
Best and now up-to-date review of a complex subject (2nd ed).......1999-05-04
excellent review of the available data on this difficult subject. Lots of evidence based data and peer reviewed literature is used as the basis of discussion of this controversial subject. Highly recommended although it may also raise more questions that it answers. The authors are highly qualified (Prof at MIT with experience in environmental affairs and practicing MD allergist)
Excellent resource.......1998-06-09
Of all that I have read on the subject of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), this is by far the most cogent, balanced, organized, and complete summary of information on this mysterious medical phenomenon. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from MCS, TILT, CFIDS, or any of the constellation of related supposedly "psychological" symptomologies, including depression, anxiety disorder, or bi-polar illness. Read it BEFORE you spend another nickel on supplements, vitamins, or anti-depressant drugs!
The best source for the latest science & policy info on MCS!.......1998-01-24
The 2nd edition of Chemical Exposures reviews all sides of the MCS debate--with much new information on scientific and policy developments since the first edition. I recommend it highly for patients, physicians, and policy makers. --Albert Donnay, Exec. Director, MCS Referral & Resources

Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone!.......2007-10-01
I was hoping to find some sensible suggestions for calming sinus inflammation associated with food intolerances. Unfortunately this author's approach to eliminating toxins from your system is more than I am willing to undertake. She advocates using chopsticks to examine your waste in order that you can make sure that you are effectively eliminating. I am not going to comb through my poop with chop sticks. I do not think that her advice is particularly practical for most folks. I regret having purchased this book and will take it to my local used bookseller asap.
SO many people need this book and don't even know it...yet !.......2007-09-23
I have the older version and it helped me to heal and go on to become a nutritionist and help others. When I couldn't find anyone who knew what was happening to me, thankfully I found this book. I highly recommend it as well as "Invisible Illness" if you want to learn about what is happening to so many people who are still clueless. Allopathic doctors don't know these facts, they exacerbate the symptoms because they refuse to accept/learn the cause, mostly because it involves nutrition instead of pharmaceuticals - she will tell you everything you need to know !
Don't hesitate if you know something just is not right, you must educate yourself. I'd love to go into details, but just get the book, it's all in there !
An invaluable addition.......2007-04-14
Gloria Gilbere is a doctor of traditional naturopathy and natural health, a homeopath, an Eco Ergonomist, and is especially known in alternative medicine for her approach to skin and body rejuvenation'. Therefore she brings a special expertise to "I Was Poisoned By My Body... I Have A Gut Feeling You Could Be, Too!". Now in a newly revised and substantially updated edition, this compendium of commentary, description, analysis and advice covers everything from food allergies, chronic fatigue, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and heartburn, to acid reflux, liver dysfunction, muscle pains, migraines, colon disorders, anaphylaxis, candid, and gluten intolerance. Of special note is Gilbere's survey and discussion of environmental illnesses because she was able to reverse her own condition of fibromyalgia, leaky gut syndrome and multiple allergic responses with natural methods and has enjoyed her recovery for the past ten years now. Enhanced with the useful addition of resource listings for testing, products, colon hydro-therapy, 'Consulting with Gloria', education, drugs classified as benzodiazepines, as well as website information and support groups, "I Was Poisoned By My Body" also features an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index. Informed and informative, thoroughly 'reader friendly', and an invaluable addition to the growing library of Alternative Medicine reference collections, "I Was Poisoned By My Body" is especially recommended reading for anyone suffering from environmentally influenced illnesses and allergies.
Book Description
People who suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity (or MCS) develop severe allergic reactions to their environments. Solvents, pesticides, fresh paint, new carpets, perfumes, and air fresheners are just a few of the substances that can trigger an MCS attack. The condition is often hard to diagnose, and frustrated patients are frequently shuttled from doctor to doctor. This survival guide is based on the latest MCS research-and on the data that the author accumulated over five years researching the impact of MCS on its victims. She reviews what is known about MCS and its symptoms and provides step-by-step advice for coping with the condition, including taking steps to make your home safe, getting professional help, and mobilizing the support of family and friends.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2001-04-06
This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it. It is great for people who are new to the MCS/Chemical Sensitivity world. It also takes you allot further. There are so many things in this book that others do not cover. There is also a nice resource listing of where to buy special products just for the Chemically Sensitive individual, I found that very useful as well. I would say if your new to MCS then this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive, straight forward easy to read version. I would start here and then move on to others by Bonnye L. Matthews Or William Rea.
One of the best books on MCS.......2000-05-15
My wife suffers from MCS. As such, I have read most of the books available concerning MCS. Most books are from a medical professional covering a particular medical theory or treatment plan for MCS. What makes this book different is that it really explains the impact of MCS on people's lives. It dispells the myths surrounding the various treatments. The book is based upon surveys and interviews with hundreds of MCS patients. As such, the advice is based upon their experiences. When discussing treatments, statistics are provided on how many people were helped, how many harmed, how many uncertain.
This books is great for those new to MCS, those who have been around a long time, those who are patients, those who know someone with MCS.
I would recommend this book be added to anyone's library. This is not the only excellent book on MCS ... it is now simply the first book I recommend that people read.
An excellent guide for those just learning about MCS.......2000-04-01
As someone who has been learning about MCS since 1994, I found this book to be an excellent overview of this frustrating, frightening and confusing malady. It is very easy to just open it and start reading at any point in the book, without losing context of the overall message. The author is very thorough in her scope, and presents her message in very easy to understand terms.
Of particular interest is the time the author spends on the emotional aspect of this illness. Unlike other psychologists, Dr. Gibson does NOT try to imply that MCS is not a physical but rather a psychological illness. Instead she includes an entire chapter for patients to share with their therapist, where she explains how MCS does NOT fit the somatization model that mainstream psychology claims as the cause of MCS symptoms. This is a refreshing approach from the psychology profession, as one of the biggest roadblocks that MCS patients must fight is the claim that "its all in your head."
I highly recommend this book to anybody who has just recently been diagnosed with MCS, or suspects they may have an environmentally related illness. I also feel that it is an excellent book for MCS patients to share with their families and friends who are struggling to understand what is going on with their loved one.

Book Description
The extraordinary development of microprocessors and their extensive use in control systems in all fields of application has brought about important changes in the design of control systems. Their performance and low cost make them much more capable, in many circumstances, than analog controllers.
In order to take full advantage of this potential,
Digital Control Systems demonstrates in detail how to design and implement high-performance model-based controllers combining system identification and control design techniques extensively tested in industrial milieux. The effective use of these techniques is illustrated in the context of various systems including: d.c. motors, flexible transmissions, air heaters, distillation columns and hot-dip galvanizing. Topics covered include:
• essentials of computer-based control systems;
• controller design methods (robust pole placement, long-range-predictive control, state space, digital PID, etc.);
• system identification techniques;
• practical aspects of system identification and digital control.
A number of recent methodological developments in control design and system identification, driven by applications, are presented, including:
• robust digital control design using sensitivity function shaping;
• plant identification in closed loop operation;
• reduction of controller complexity.
The text of
Digital Control Systems is enhanced, for practical and tutorial purposes, by the use of software which illustrates the various concepts and algorithms and gives a feeling for the phenomena, discussed. The MATLAB
®/Scilab routines used for this purpose can be downloaded from the textbook’s website where additional material for teaching is available (slide presentations of the chapter material, data files for additional laboratory sessions and example files).
Graduate students in courses on digital control will find this text to be most helpful in learning the essential techniques of computer-based control while the wealth of additional material will make the tutor’s tasks of teaching and preparation quicker and easier. The book also provides practising engineers wishing to enhance their skills in this area with efficient and co-ordinated methods for the design and implementation of computer-based controllers.
