“Greg Paul tells of whores and crazies, misfits and rejects that sound as if they stepped out from the pages of the Bible.” –Eugene Peterson
Sam has survived physical, sexual, and substance abuse, terrible violence, and life on the streets. Wendy lives for the next high on crack, oblivious to her boyfriend’s love. Neil is dying of AIDS.
These are the people of inner-city Toronto. Look into their distorted, obscure faces, their fractured lives, and catch a glimpse of the sublime. Greg Paul calls them tragic heroes–individuals who can offer a testament to God’s love and mercy.
With emotional depth and spiritual intensity, Greg’s compelling stories reveal that people with desperate lives have precious lessons to teach us about the character of God. God in the Alley offers a profound message of grace and calling that each one of us needs to hear.
“The experience of reading this book haunts, convicts, delights. But one thing is for sure: you don’t want to miss it.”
–Mark Buchanan, author of The Holy Wild: Trusting God in Everything
“Greg Paul writes beautifully and welcomes us into the life he lives.… I am grateful to have read this book.”
–David Wilcox, musician, songwriter, and storyteller
“I dare you to read this book at more than one sitting. Each page is a seat belt that straps you in and the turning of the page pulls the straps tighter. When the ride is over, you’ll want to start again.”
–Leonard Sweet, author of numerous books including Soul Tsunami

Are You Looking in the Right Places?.......2007-07-25
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I had been bogged down with my seminary reading for the better part of the last 3 years, and while I absolutely love scholastic theology, I also understand the need for a practical application of the $30,000 worth of theological concepts that I learned in seminary. This book served as a great diversion from abstract, philosophical, theological perspectives and gave me a chance to walk with a real pastor through his journey "with" Jesus. You will need to read the book to get a full appreciation for what the author means when he uses the word "with." I guarantee he will challenge you to get "up and out" and to DO the work of the gospel. This book inspired me to get my hands back on the plow. Too much scholastic theology can make one stale and irrelevant. Though I keep constant watch on myself for relevance, one can get caught up in spewing rhetoric onto a page, and find oneself guilty of being a great articulator of biblical concepts, but a total failure at servanthood. Greg Paul is guilty of no such thing. Dare I quote the venerable Leonard Sweet who says of this book, "I dare you. No, I double dare you to read this book at more than one sitting." I'll say no more.
Legit.......2007-04-07
Great book that was simple and sincere. Greg Paul just tells his story and what he's learned. I wish more could write this way. Very humble and a good read.
Finding Jesus in brokenness.......2006-01-21
A friend of mine reluctantly read this book, thinking it would make him feel guilty. I suppose a lot of us approach a book like this with mixed feelings, hoping to be challenged but scared of where that might take us.
The book is called God in the Alley, and the subtitle says a lot: it's about "being and seeing Jesus in a broken world." For those of us who are sheltered, we are introduced to unfamiliar places and people, not far from home but far from our experience. I'm introduced to the underside of a park in Toronto that I've visited many times, and I learn where the high-priced working girls offer their services, and where the low-rent girls work. We meet crackheads, prostitutes, and victims of unimaginable abuse. And, surprisingly, we meet Jesus in the lives of these broken people.
"That's what I want this book to be about: the cultivation of our ability to both be Jesus and to see Jesus," writes Greg Paul, "if only by a dim flickering light - the afterimage on the darkened retina of a momentary, brilliant burst." Those of us who think our lives are not all that bad might overestimate our abilities to be Jesus, but Paul challenges us: you can't be Jesus if you aren't truly seeing him.
"If I truly want to be present as Jesus was and is, I must choose to act in very specific ways. Theory, or doctrinal correctness, is not enough. Seeing Jesus is a discipline of stillness. If I really want to see him, I'll need to avoid being consumed by trying always to do things in his name, and I'll need to learn to be motionless, intent on beholding what is in front of me."
Being present involves not only breaking through the comfort of middle-class life. It also involves breaking "beyond the internal barriers I have erected to protect myself.
So we read stories. These stories are not sanitized or romanticized. There is a lot of messiness in this book, and surprisingly, the messiness shows up in the good guys like Paul just as much as it does in the sinners. Even more surprising, we meet Jesus in surprising people: in those who are broken and who have little going for them. In one of the most moving stories, we meet a modern-day version of the story of Hosea and Gomer. Jesus shows up in the most surprising places, and if we're not careful we'll miss seeing him there.
Greg Paul teaches us to see Jesus in people rather than to see people as projects. He offers hope that we, too, may be able to develop the skill of seeing Jesus, just as he has, and ultimately in being Jesus to the people that we meet.
Paul reflects that at one point, if he had been asked how to be the presence of Jesus, he would have talked about being pure and strong and faithful. Although these are important, Paul explains today that he would answer differently.
"I am more likely to have Jesus revealed to me and through me in weakness than in strength, sinfulness than in purity, or doubt than in perfect faithfulness....I come to this astonishing conclusion: Jesus is found in brokenness..."
"The surprise of this brokenness is not just that the Almighty allowed himself to be broken, and that he invites me to touch him there in that brokenness. It's also that my own brokenness - that hidden, ugly, twisted stuff that I had expected would disqualify me forever from his friendship, and that, if it were known, would torpedo all my other relationships too - is precisely the place where he desires to touch me, and it is the place where I am most able to truly connect with other people."
I began this book expecting that it would teach me about how to serve those the middle class usually ignores. I finished realizing that it did much more than that: it introduced me to my own brokenness, with the "most attractive cover" we can find to hide the mess underneath, and it introduced me to the presence of Jesus in some of the people we see as being most broken. It gave me hope that I, too, can be and see the presence of Jesus in a broken world.
Earth Angels.......2005-10-11
Although Christians would not consider me to be a Christian, (because I also believe in the best of what other religions have to offer) nontheless, to me Greg Paul demonstrates what it takes to embody the "Spirit" of Christianity. Jesus didn't sit in a comfortable pew every Sunday. He was 'in the trenches' as Greg Paul and his staff are.
This book is a great read. It will get you thinking about what it must be like to live in the 'shadow' city areas. It may motivate you to ask yourself deeper questions as to fate and purpose and God? Why them? Why must this be? Where is God in all of this? How can I help?
The personalities described in this book along with their successes and failures, help us understand our common humanity - these were folks who once had dreams and hopes too (and some still do) - despite the fact that reality has faded their aspirations greatly. How could we cope in their place? How can these people still show an indomitable spirit to survive the madness and pain they are exposed to every day?
Buy this book. It is raw and real. People of all faiths (those who are open-minded) will find these true stories to be uplifting and encouraging (no candy-coated trite Bible verses).
Is it possible to demonstrate the highest of spiritual principles on the street? Greg Paul wrestles to understand the complexity of this question and writes honestly about this issue sharing his experiences, vulnerabilities and insights.
A MUST READ.......2005-01-27
If you love and follow Jesus pick this book up.
If you are curious as to why people might love and follow Jesus, pick this book up. If you don't care but just need a good laugh, a heart tug and cry, pick up this book.
Thank you Greg Paul for a wonderful little BIG book!
Great big thoughts and ideas in this one that will stay with me for a lifetime.

your passport to peace.......2000-01-18
If you have been on what seems to be a never ending journey in search of peace, you have found your answer. This book is a roadmap to success if you are serious about having peace in your life. Joyce has a way of being so frank and forthright that it is impossible to miss the message she conveys. Her willingness to allow us into "her world" of frustration and exhaustion in her quest for peace is what makes the things she says so believeable. It's comforting to know that someone has struggled through the same areas in life and has perservered and found victory! It's easy to tell someone what to do if you haven't walked in their shoes. It seems that Joyce has been in a lot of peoples shoes and she can speak from experience while giving biblical counsel. That's always easier for someone to accept. God is using her in mighty ways to bring about healing for millions of people. Let her help you too.

Discover how the Silence of God will finally be broken and how the End Times will begin. Learn how the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 & 39 is the key to understanding the events that God will use to initiate His Day of the Lord. This book challenges many scholarly conclusions regarding Ezekiel's prophecy as well as the views of prophecy skeptics. It offers a logical and systematic solution to the dilemma this prophecy poses for many readers of the Bible. Discover how and why the beginning of the End Times will be misinterpreted as the end of the Tribulation; how the War of Gog and Magog will be misunderstood as the War of Armageddon; and what that will mean for the nations of the world.

The Silence Is Broken by Douglas Berner.......2007-01-03
At the off-set, I must say that this book, The Silence is Broken, as it relates to the war of Gog and Magog, is the best book on the subject that I have ever read - and I've read many books on this subject. Berner is very thorough, and very analytical in his approach to explaining all the ins-and-outs of Ezekiel 38 & 39. His research is unsurpassed, and he gleans from other prophetic writers in a manner that either affirms or disaffirms what he considers sound scripture, and examines their positions in the light of God's Word and just good old logic. He covers the whole spectrum of various positions of other prophecy writers/researchers in a manner that is fair, and offers Biblical proof in his conclusions which to many readers would be new thought.
He has managed to set forth the time lines of the different events that occur during the Gog & Magog war in a manner that is logical and easy to understand. His application of the Word of God is without parallel with respect to the Magog war scenario. A truly easy book to read and understand. I know of no other book that is as thorough as this one. He distinguishes the Day of the Lord from that of the beginning of the 7 year Tribulation period that makes sense and which is very logical.
As I read this book, I found it to coincide very much to my understanding of Ezekiel 38 & 39. I have previously given a lot of thought about a gap period between the Rapture of the Church and the beginning of the Tribulation when the Antichrist confirms the 7 year covenant with Israel. It makes sense for a variety of reasons which Berner thoroughly explains. One area that I hoped Berner would have discussed (but actually it isn't relevant necessarily to the Magog Gog war) was whether America is the Mystery Babylon of Rev. 17 & 18. I bring this up because Berner does mention in several places the return of the Jews to Israel from around the world. In Rev. 18:4, it says, "...Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." Just who are "my people?" Are these the Jews in Mystery Babylon (America) that the Lord is calling to go home to Israel before Mystery Babylon is destroyed? It is my understanding that America has more Jews nation wide then Israel has, or very close to same number. "My people" is certainly not the Church," as the Rapture has already taken place. Can't be the Tribulation saints either. J. Vernon McGee in his commentary on Revelation says: "The warning is two fold: (1) they are to have no fellowship with the sins of Babylon; (2) and they are to flee before judgment falls." And flee to where? McGee doesn't identify these people nor does he say where they will flee to. Now Berner says on page 13 (last paragraph), that "The most likely scenario involves a Russian nuclear first strike against the United States and other nations of the West to neutralize their ability to intervene in the invasion of Israel." I agree whole heartedly with Berner regarding this possible scenario. America is doomed for direct judgment from the Lord for her sins have reached unto Heaven (verse 5) - there is no doubt about that. In verse 10, it says in one hour is thy judgment come. Just where does this judgment of Mystery Babylon fit in chronologically? I think possibly it will be shortly after the Rapture, but before the 7 year Tribulation period. Before or after the Magog war? Certainly before the Antichrist desecrates the Tribulation Temple. Seems to fit Berner's statement on page 14 wherein he says, "Jews will flock to Israel in celebration while much of the world mourns its losses." Also, see pages 116 (top of page), 158 & 236. There has been a large immigration of Jews from Russia to Israel, but not from America.
Berner mentions that the nations surrounding Israel are not in the Russian led group, which is true. Why? Perhaps they are destroyed prior to the Magog invasion of Israel (pages 150-151). Something obviously has to happen to the Palestinians (Hamas et al) and other Jihad terrorists, and the Hizbollah of the north in Lebanon (Isaiah 10:23-25, 34). Furthermore, the nations that align themselves with Russia in the Magog war are Islamic, as I understand it, but not Arab, which I believe is true (as Arnold Fruchetenbaum and Chuck Missler believe - page 53). See Psalms 83.
I believe that the Day of the Lord follows immediately after the Rapture of the Church, and not necessarily after the Magog war as Berner seems to believe.
I highly recommend Douglas Berner's book as it is one of the best researched books on the subject of the Gog Magog war that I have read. Berner is to be commended on a wonderful written book - it has excellent structure - is easy to read. My prayer would be that every Christian and non-Christian would purchase it and read it.
Essential Reading As The Middle East Heats Up.......2006-09-25
Current events in the Middle East continue to grab the world's attention to the point that even non-Christians can often be heard bringing up the subject of the "Battle of Armageddon." What will the end result be of this impending clash between so-called "Christian Fundamentalist" George Bush, and Islamic Fundamentalist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran? What can Israel expect as Iran, Syria and Russia continue to finance and arm terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah? Will Israel ever find peace this side of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? Author and Bible scholar Douglas Berner provides answers to these very pertinent questions in his new book The Silence Is Broken! God Hooks Ezekiel's Gog and Magog. This book is one of the most important books written in the past few years on the subject of Bible Prophecy and, as the title implies, Berner focuses on the major end-times regional war involving Israel and her neighbors that was predicted by the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel.
What Berner shows is that the invasion of Israel by "Gog of the land of Magog" should be understood as the event that provokes God to finally "break His silence" in His dealings with Israel and the nations of the world, bringing forth the apocalyptic "Day of the Lord" predicted by God's prophets throughout the Old and New Testaments. The end-times "Tribulation" will not begin ambiguously or gradually, but with a global and catastrophic outpouring of the wrath of God upon the nations of the world for the specific purpose of saving God's unique nation, Israel, from certain destruction.
The Silence Is Broken! examines all of the different views that have been presented over the years by various scholars in dealing with the Magog invasion, and Berner is very fair in his analysis of each of them. However, he is not afraid to break new ground and arrive at new conclusions when the Biblical texts require it. The major area of analysis in which such a revision takes place is in the area of chronology and in correlating the Magog invasion with the prophecies found in Daniel and the book of Revelation. Like most dispensational scholars Berner arrives at a Pre-70th Week fulfillment of the Magog invasion, but when he also places the Magog invasion and its aftermath parallel to the Seals of Revelation and the first four Trumpets he goes a step further. The implication is that the standard dispensational chronology needs to be revised to allow for the 70th Week of Daniel to begin sometime after the early Trumpet judgments of Revelation, which is a revision that has also been called for by scholars such as myself, as well as by David Lowe of Earthquake Resurrection.
Issues surrounding the chronology of Revelation and the fulfillment of the Day of the Lord will certainly continue to be hotly debated, but even if readers do not welcome the idea of a chronological revision they will still find a great deal of important information in Berner's book. One of the ideas that Berner examines that will probably be of great consequence is the idea that the Magog invasion will be falsely portrayed as the fulfillment of the "Battle of Armageddon." After this devastating Israel-centered conflict takes place the world will probably look back upon it as the significant event that marked the transition from the old age into the new. Berner refers to it as "the day that will be misunderstood," and comments at length on the potential deception that will arise as the appearance of the Antichrist is portrayed as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to the unsaved world.
The Silence Is Broken! is the most thorough and up-to-date analysis of Ezekiel's "Magog Invasion" that is currently available. It is a serious study of all of the different questions surrounding the conflict and its' relation to the Day of the Lord, yet it is also very readable and easy to understand. Every student of Bible prophecy and current events should obtain a copy, and I plan to purchase several more myself to give to pastors in my area. Israel is the key to understanding the end-times, and the Magog invasion will be the spark that causes God to once again make Himself known to Israel and to the world. Douglas Berner's The Silence Is Broken! pulls all of the various texts together, and his book could very easily become the basis for a much clearer approach to understanding the relationship between Bible prophecy and current events in the Middle East.
Book Description

Suddenly with no place to hide from the reality we realize life is all cracked up. Through the lens of our pain everything seems broken, bruised, and battered. But, as best-selling author Patsy Clairmont points out, there's a redeemer of our pain--Jesus. Book Description
This collection of Hindu folktales for middle readers features stories about the god, Ganesha, who is easily recognized because of his elephant head. Krishnaswami introduces the stories by recalling her own introduction to Ganesha and goes on to offer a mythological context for the tales. Included among the tales are Ganesha's Head, The Broken Tusk, and 'Why Ganesha Never Married. Most of the stories come from Hindu legend; one comes from Mongolia, where Ganesha made his way into the Buddhist tradition. The pen-and-ink illustrations have child appeal, and readers will be aided by the pronunciation guide and glossary.

Ganesh.......2005-04-09
As we all know How old is our Hindu Religeon ! If you see the Lord Ganesha or children say's elephant trunk god with a big belly..Do you relaize that The science was developed at that time as well as surgery too.Lord Shiva was a Doctor ( Master of Surgon) and he cloned the elephant head witha human body ? Do you believe it..Yes you have to be !
Fun and interesting for adults too.......2004-11-18
I bought this book for my niece and nephew, but before I gave it to them I read it too. It brought back the stories of Ganesha I had been told in childhood, and made me smile at them again. It may not have the pictures of "How Ganesha got his elephant head", which I bought for another child, but the it has more stories of this altogether charming lovable god.
Delightful book.......2002-10-22
The Broken Tusk tells seventeen different stories of Ganesha in easy reader format for second grade and up. The stories also lend themselves well to the read-aloud format for younger children. Many of my old favorites are here including the ones about how Ganesha got his elephant head and about how he made a "pradakshina" around his parents, into a trip around the world. Some might find the versions of certain stories here to be different from what they know. That is understandable considering how many of these have been passed along strictly through oral tradition. There are also some rarer stories here including one borrowed from Buddhist folklore.
Krishnaswami has done a thorough professional job with this one. She has prefaced the book with a brief introduction to Hindu mythology and to the god Ganesha himself. Also complementing the stories are a glossary of terms, a list of characters (kids would appreciate that!), a list of other names for Ganesha, and a pronunciation guide.
Krishnaswami finishes every story she narrates with a line or two that ties the legend to modern day reality. For example, after the story about Ganesha's head, Krishnaswami explains that in Indian (especially South Indian) temples today, sometimes elephants are fed and maintained reverentially. These acts, Krishnaswami explains, probably acknowledge the sacrifice made by the elephant in the original story. Small explanations like these place the stories in context, a service that I think is especially useful. The last word belongs to the wonderful old-world illustrations by Maniam Selven that complement the stories wonderfully.
With this book, Krishnaswami demonstrates that she is not only a gifted storyteller, she is also a thorough one. The Broken Tusk will get an enthusiastic nod not only from the young reading set but also from their grateful parents. This book is as charming as the elephant god himself!
More Than Just a Children's Book.......2002-08-03
This book was written to be a children's book, but in fact it is probably the best collection of storytelling about the mythology of Ganesha that that I have ever found. The Hindu parthenon's mythology has always been passed along from generation to generation by tales of the Deity in it's various forms. This exquisite book has all the well-known tales of Ganesh as well as some obscure stories and some tales from other lands and religions. I don't have kids but do delight in the simple stories that bring the attributes of Ganesha into light in simple, vivid parables of joy. If you love Ganesh like I love Ganesh, then this is a 'must have.' If you are a storyteller, this is the book that will be a Ganesh guide. If you just want a book that you can read story's in occasionally just to smile and search for meaning in, again, here'tis. This is a delightful exposing of this beloved Deity into Western civilization in our time. GAM.
Excellent introduction to Ganesh and Indian mythology........1998-10-09
A well written and highly readable book for children and adults alike, "The Broken Tusk" allows children to get to know Indian mythological figures as they really are - with godlike qualities and human frailties. Gods, demons and humans all take on a certain lovableness in this book. The author has presented popular versions of Ganesh stories, without sermonizing about good and evil, leaving the reader to draw the obvious conclusions. Children who are interested in different cultures are sure to enjoy this one, especially young Americans of Indian descent. My 8 year old, a real nature lover, who is fascinated with the multifaceted aspects of Indian mythological figures and their oneness with animals and nature, found it an eminently attractive book to read and to own. Clean, clear illustrations which take on a life of their own also add to the charm of this book. A handsome addition to any library, I recommend it highly.

The Body Broken
“The pathos of God for the torn and tearing body of Christ has seized the heart of Robert Benson. This book is a pure, passionate and prophetic cry to transcend all division and discord into reverence one another in obedience to the Master. One more thing: Benson is a helluva writer!”
-Brennan Manning, author of A Glimpse of Jesus
“In a time when bookstores are full of books and films about the end of the road (everyone seems to want to know), The Body Broken takes us on a journey for the sake of the journey itself, and in the process, it teaches us about loving one another, not by imperative, but by example.”
—from the foreword by John Fischer, author of Love Him in the Morning: Reflections on God’s Faithfulness
Jesus prayed for our unity as believers in the hours before His betrayal and crucifixion. Robert Benson tenderly pleads for all of us who follow Him to heed our Lord’s petition and concentrate on what unites us instead of what divides us. In a thoughtful and beautifully written volume Benson challenges each of us to reexamine what it means to be a follower of Jesus in the diverse body of Christ. His honesty and heart for the church shine throughout this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
-Dave Burchett, Author of Bring’em Back Alive: A Healing Plan for those Wounded by the Church and When Bad Christians Happen to Good People
“Again and again, Robert Benson speaks to my heart. His search for authenticity and the power of his words to articulate the way stations on that pilgrim pathway resonate for me in a unique way. The Body Broken lifts us into a new dimension of spiritual reality.”
— Luci Shaw, Writer-in-Residence, Regent College and author of Water Lines
“As always, Benson’s deceptively simple storytelling sneaks up on you. His style, a fusion of gentleness, raw truth, and quiet power (remind you of anyone?), is put to good use here. The Body Broken is a keeper.” — Nikki Grimes, award-winning author of Bronx Masquerade and What Is Goodbye?
“It is a great irony that all of us who love Jesus and know that he prays for us, even now, that we “may all be one,” have such a difficult time loving one another. Robert Benson doesn’t exactly tell us how to do it but he does tell an honest story about the ways that Jesus’ prayer is getting worked out in his life.”
— Eugene Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

Another masterpiece.......2005-04-15
Robert Benson is no doubt the most recent in a long line of great Anglican writers. His take on life, as an "everyman," is a true departure from the stodgy theology lectures of most books on inter-denominational relationships. At a time when the Church is dividing over seemingly incosequential matters, Mr. Benson provides a common sense view that what binds us together is far stronger that what seeks to pull us apart.
He's done it again..........2003-10-10
I have to agree with the notion that one of our finest writers can be found in Robert Benson. Reading this book is like sitting in front porch rockers, having an open and honest conversation about the concerns of the Body of our Lord. Robert holds back nothing...from himself and from the way things are within today's church. As with all his other books, I'll read this one again and again.
(And, Robert: thx for mentioning my church as a fine example of worship!)
A clear message for a church threatening division.......2003-09-27
Robert Benson may be the finest Christian writer in America. He has a passionate vision for declaring the reality of God's redemptive love in carefully crafted poetic stories that perfectly capture the truth and power of the Gospel. This is a book that should be read by all Christians faced with disagreement and disunity in their community.

Openness and Honesty.......2004-11-29
By way of disclosure, I have never met Ms. Zoba in person, but several years ago we exchanged views on the Columbine killings via email. Even though we had a sharp disagreement, I came to appreciate her openness and honesty. You can see the same in this book. There is no sugar-coating of her experiences and feelings when her life fell apart in the wake of her divorce and illness. If you have ever gone through a period where your life was turned upside down and all that you counted on to make sense of it was gone, then you'll appreciate the message of this book. There are no easy answers, but what she writes about the journey through the "dark night of the soul" will be of great help to fellow travellers.
