Depression and anxiety fully understood and dealt with at last.......2007-07-17
WOW! What a book. I have many books, on the above subjects, being a sufferer myself, and feeling like I'm hitting a blank wall trying to fully understand it, but also a book that actively helps you to accept there is more information about diagnosis, PROPER treatment available, and REAL solutions to these debilitating illnesses, not just psychotherapy, or medication. It delves into the psysiological reasons and chemistry of the brain and how SPECT scans can verify diagnoses and help to correctly pinpoint the specific type of illness you may have. I have read many medical books and was 'till now unaware of the physiological markers to look out for, but also that these scans help to pinpoint accurate treatment for your specific type, of which there are 7 main types. It is not for the novice necessarily as medical jargon is used, but is well worth the read and there are addresses and phone numbers for contacting doctors that help diagnose and treat patients. It helps to self diagnose to a point, and makes you feel like there is light at the end of the very long tunnel. About time a book like this has come along. I plan to use it extensively and rid myself of the bain I carry around daily!
Healing Anxiety and Depression.......2007-07-09
This book was very informative and useful to me. Everything that is described about these conditions helped me feel that I was on the road to recovery with what my doctor had prescribed, and know with the added knowledge provided by this book I have added supplements, excerise, and a positive attitude to my dealing with my depression.
There is help!.......2007-05-12
There are a lot of self help books out there, and in that there are a lot of them that don't help. This book helps people do what they need to do to not suffer anymore. It talks about medication if needed, and other natural alternatives as well. I like how Dr. Amen stresses that it is a change in a whole lifestyle. Taking medicine, natural or not needs to be accompanied by a GOOD DIET (supplements) and EXCERCISE! For anyone that is sick of being anxious and or depressed, this book is a great place to start! He gives tools to help a person get out of feeling stuck.
Highly recommend to really read the book. Kind of like a textbook. Going back to pages if one has to, to really understand ones behavior, and what one needs to do to be healthy. Highly recommended!
Objective, scientific neuroimaging reveals reality of anxiety and depression, and treatment results.......2006-11-07
Healing Anxiety and Depression is one of the most scientifically valid discussions of these disorders. Dr. Amen's use of SPECT brain scans to analyze "emotional" and "behavioral" disorders is a welcome contrast to the speculative theories which have dominated treatment of anxiety and depression. This book is generously illustrated with SPECT brain scans of actual patients and clearly reveals physical imbalances in brain blood flow distribution. More importantly, the scans show improved function, with appropriate treatment. Psychiatry is the only medical speciality which does not routinely examine, image or measure the organ system, which it treats. Functional brain scans and neurotransmitter testing are finally moving psychiatric treatment beyond the trial and error guessing it has been mired in, for decades. Amazingly, SPECT gamma ray cameras are available in almost every hospital cardiac unit, where they are used for cardiac stress tests. Hopefully, they will begin receiving additional use, for brain scanning.
Interestingly, Dr. Amen has included a SPECT scan of his brain. Inclusion of his own scan speaks volumes, concerning the safety of SPECT brain scans. We will probably wait a long time before we learn of anyone practicing electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), who has submitted to ECT electro shock therapy.
The scans and case histories reveal the reality of disorders including traumatic brain injury, depression, pernicious anemia, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, ectasy and marijuana abuse. Improvements produced by diverse treatments including Prozac, Lamictal, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and St. John's Wort are clearly revealed in scan images. The image of impaired blood flow distribution, due to Xanax will confirm what many suspect-Benzodiazepine medications impair brain function.
Amen and Routh provide an overview of diverse treatments including most pharmaceutical treaments and many nutritional and herbal treatments, in addition to cognitive behavioral therapy, systematic desensitization, biofeedback, exercise, deep breathing and EMDR.
This book was published in 2003, before the sleepwalking syndromes associated with Ambien became more widely publicized and Lunesta became available as a safer alternative. Although Amen and Routh recommend GABA supplements, for anxiety, GABA seldom crosses the blood-brain barrier, and we have seldom found an anxious patient, who responds to GABA supplements. Neurotransmitter profiles of our anxious patients indicate excess glutamate causes more anxiety than deficient GABA levels.
Florida Detox has referred patients to Amen Clinics, for SPECT brain scans and the scans have revealed useful clinical information, especially when patients suffered severe anxiety or had multiple chemical dependencies.
I suspect many readers would like to see a larger, expanded version of this book, with more case histories and scans. After performing over 20,000 SPECT scans, Amen Clinics certainly possesses the scans and case histories needed for a larger sequel to this book.
Steven Sponaugle, Research Director, Florida Detox
Too much nature not enough nurture.......2006-11-01
I think Amen goes a little to far claiming to heal depression and anxiety. Althrough depression and anxiety have physical manifistations and treatments I think it is important to address the psycholgical cuases and issues that contribute to these problems.

She does not present any esoteric analytical or existential ideologies, but rather guides the reader to greater personal insight and problem solving that is practical and achievable. Book Description
Twice as many women as men will experience depression sometime in their lifetime, and episodes for women are likely to start at earlier ages, last longer, and recur more frequently, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (www.aafp.org). Many women are given medication to treat the disease, but medication alone does not always address the underlying emotions which trouble the mind and spirit. Counselor Elyse Fitzpatrick and Dr. Laura Hendrickson provide biblical guidance on how to balance medical intervention with biblical encouragement.
Customer Reviews:
Best Work Yet on Counseling and Medication for Emotional Pain.......2007-07-21
Reviewer's Grade: 9 out of 10 (only the Bible gets a 10)
Level of Difficulty: 2.5 out of 5
The book is ultimately meant for everyone. Clean, lucid prose. Carefully constructed outline. Informative appendices. And those insightful, makes- things-click-in-your-brain diagrams that biblical counselors are so good at!
Target Audience: Women, specifically women on medication for emotional pain, thinking about getting on medication, or counseling women who are in either of the above situations
"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
(C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain)
The premise of this book is that God and His Word are sufficient for enduring with true peace through any emotional pain. Simple enough. Granted this would cover most biblical counseling books out there. However, when a book written by NANC counselors specifically on the subject of suffering and psychiatric medications comes out, it's well worth a read. Thankfully, the book delivers a powerful dose of biblical argumentation, a theological superstructure that holds everything together, a keen personal awareness of pain in all its forms, and penetrating yet warm applications that stir the heart toward faith and obedience in Christ.
Co-written by a medical doctor, this book offers solid basic insight into how theology and medicine are related. It takes us into the physiology of fear and depression (cf. "neuroplasticity" on p. 125), but always rooted in the presupposition that what goes on in the heart effects the outer man. The authors land squarely on the side that habitual training of the mind in the Word will lead to right thoughts, feelings, and choices, which in turn lead to changes in physiology (36-37). This is not to say that meditating on Scripture will heal organic diseases. But when dealing with painful emotions that become full-blown panic, depression, and the like, the authors are dead-on target when they write, "if we do not see ourselves as being able to solve our problems through the grace and power of God, we have missed one of the main themes in the Bible: God enables His people to live victoriously even under very difficult circumstances (36)."
The same truth just stated holds true for those suffering emotional pain stemming from physical illness or some other physical debility. Painful feelings are "God's gift to us to tell us that something is wrong, that something needs fixing" (101). This was, on a personal note, the most exciting insight gained from the book. The book reminds us emphatically that God will withhold earthly delights in order to draw our hearts to the one True delight: Jesus Christ. Such a focus on our Lord and on the gospel permeates the book and shows us the practical significance of the gospel for every sphere of human life.
Although the book was written specifically for women (includes feminine topics in Chapter 7--nothing risque), the theological principles and applications will equip every believer to fight the good fight of faith in the midst of emotional pain. This book will practically guide you to fight feelings with faith, to trust in the sovereign goodness of God in every circumstance, to believe on the promises of Scripture regarding our temptations, to take up the process of change by Scripture-intake and focusing on the needs of others, and lastly, to treasure His kingdom and His righteousness knowing that every need of yours has already been accounted for by the Father. I am especially appreciative of the fact that this book doesn't sugar-coat pain. It just puts it into gospel perspective. Here is a helpful and hope-filled quote that exemplifies this focus:
"At the time when we start to do better and suddenly encounter trouble, we wonder, What did I do wrong? Please don't fall into this trap!...the process of learning, growing, changing, failing, and then learning again is the very plan He's designed for us" (197).
I was personally taken by the perceptive biblical arguments and principles of this book. Each step of the way, the authors drive into my mind the absolute necessity of the cross, the sovereignty and love of God, the centrality of the word, and the folly of this world's philosophies that have now basically eliminated the inner-man from the consciousness of people. It's a work that boldly and graciously urges Scripture-saturated, humble trust in God for overcoming emotional pain. I'm hoping that a future work (by these women or other authors) will focus more on the church's role in this increasingly prevalent counseling issue.
Genuine, Biblical, Practical Help.......2007-01-18
I opened this book with the wild hope that is could actually help me out of the black hole that fear had trapped me in. What I found was exactly what I needed. I found my life accurately yet sensitively described in the pages of the chapter on anxiety. The authors make clear the relationship between the mind and the body and how they affect each other, clarifying for me why I suffered mentally and physically the way I did. They go on to show the reader how they can finally be free of such agony. The authors are careful to exhort biblically, using God's word to confront, correct, and heal.
I found the earlier chapters most helpful for my own struggles. The later chapters will be helpful if I ever find myself in any of the physical conditions which they address, or if I am in a position to counsel someone else in such a condition.
It's no easy thing to battle depression, anxiety, or other such emotions, and the authors never present it that way. They clearly understand the pain and the struggle, and they are loving and gentle in their approach. I highly recommend this book to both women and men who struggle this way. I have purchased several copies already and am giving them out to people as I have opportunity.
Practical! Profound! Timely!.......2006-06-26
This easy to read book is a practical guide to a godly way of looking at pain, meds, and our hearts. It's pages are filled with hope and grace for those who suffer from troubling emotions. Full of diagrams, testimonies, and thought provoking questions; this book is a must read for understanding what the Bible says about your pain and the pain of those you love
Incredible Resource.......2006-06-21
This is a long awaited book by two women who know the problems we face with emotional pain and are thoroughly equipt to address this issue in an understanding and knowledgable way both from the scriptures and medically. I laud Moody Press for making it available! It offers real hope and definitive answers to those who suffer. It is an incredible resource that I will be referring to myself and sharing with many others. I can't recommend it highly enough! I agree with Dr. Newheiser and give it 5 stars.
Balanced and Compassionate.......2006-06-14
The authors address issues which concern many Christians: Are my emotional problems (depression, anxiety, or moodiness) a disease of the body or a problem of the soul? What can I do to feel better?
They begin by addressing the mind-body question, explaining that we are not merely physical creatures, but that we also are spiritual beings. The authors gently challenge their readers to consider the spiritual causes of their emotional problems. Spiritual issues cannot be addressed merely by material means (such as medications).
They then deal with the problem of pain, providing compassionate biblical answers. The heart of the book is devoted to practically addressing the specific issues of depression, anxiety, and moodiness. Finally, they address cognitive and perceptual problems which have physical causes, such as brain injuries and dementia. In every situation there is hope in Christ!
Testimonies of those who have found biblical help for their emotional pain are intersperced throughout the book and further enhance the authors' message.
The authors very carefully address the use of psychotropic drugs. Dr. Hendrickson speaks from the perspective of a physician as she explains how commonly prescribed medications work, and what their side effects may be. Her viewpoint is enhanced by her personal experiences about which she is refreshingly transparent. While the authors focus on addressing emotional problems through biblical/spiritual means, they do not condemn those who have used psychotropic drugs. They also repeatedly warn readers not to go off of medication without a doctor's supervision.
As a biblical counselor, I have never read a more practical and useable book. I anticipate giving this book to many of my counselees. While it is addressed primarily to women, many men will find great benefit in reading it.
Book Description
Nexus offers an engaging and insightful journey of an odd mix of people drawn together to a spiritual retreat to overcome personal pain. This book will please readers of spiritual, new age, inspirational, self-help and visionary fiction books. It weaves insights within the narrative like The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and The Peaceful Warrior series by Dan Millman.
Starting with a dramatic suicide scene through intimate details of the struggle of Logan Andrews with depression and despair, we are brought on a journey of inner struggle and personal transformation. The reader is transported to a spiritual retreat where the experiences of people at the retreat provide illuminating life lessons. The tone of book creates an authentic journey that is both exploratory and insightful.
The overriding theme in
Nexus is mystical in its nature, narrating experiences of deeper connection felt with one another and all of life. This is poignantly highlighted in key passages, including Logan's empathy for a dying fish in Chapter 6.
Customer Reviews:
Need for Spiritual Change.......2007-07-01
I've read many spiritual books and this one really spoke to me with a story that communicated about both the highs and lows of spiritual life through the touching journey of people at a retreat center. Each person in the story is dealing with their own sorrow from the depression-despair of Logan, Sarah's loss of direction and Muriel's desire to be comforted in her old age. Steven is fixated on his money-making schemes and in order for him to experience growth, he needs to connect to the path of love.
The story speaks of something deeper - a need for spiritual change. It isn't always stated on the surface and you have to dig deeper to recognize that as the central theme of this book. Yet you feel this impulse motivating the communication between teachers and students at the retreat center and the experiences there allude to a deeper bond - to the Nexus that connects us all through our heart where empathy and compassion can grow with experiences of our Oneness. The compassion Logan shows for a dying fish vividly captures this theme. This vision of non-duality is always there beneath the surface though our ego stands in the way of its realization.
The message in this book is beautiful and so I want others to know about it. Through spiritual books like this, we can delve into consciousness transformation and share it with others.
Really Bad. Don't Buy.......2007-06-30
I made the mistake of purchasing this book because it was referenced in a review for The Road (an amazing fiction currently on the best seller list). Now I realize I was probably led into buying it by one of the authors' friends or supporters. The 5 star reviews are bias, to say the least! The dialogue is beyond bad. It is stilted and at times downright silly. I love top quality spiritual writings like "The Power of Now" by E. Tolle or the writings of D. Chopra. It's not that I am spiritually closed, I just know very bad writing when I see it.
This "fiction" is an attempt to flesh out the spiritual teachings of the two authors through poorly crafted, one dimensional characters. I would rather drink flax oil and fast for a week to better my soul than read this kind of stuff. I anticipate receiving some unsupportive votes for this review, and these will likely come from the friends of the authors who have written the 5 star reviews. So be it. I'd rather be honest and save the potential Amazon customer some money!
Thought Provoking.......2007-05-30
NEXUS is an absorbing guide to the dazzling universe of spirituality! Written in the appealing genre of a new age novel I found NEXUS to be a remarkable psychological and spiritual adventure filled with mystery, enchantment, romance, insights, as well as being highly realistic in terms of life's joys and sorrows. I just couldn't put the book down!!!
The diverse assortment of characters were realistic, and the plot was deep, lively and fast paced throughout. NEXUS WORKED AT VERY DEEP LEVELS OF MY MIND TO PENETRATE MY SUBCONSCIOUS AND TO EXPAND AND INSPIRE MY SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!
By carefully reading NEXUS and reflecting on the philosophical insights inherent throughout the book I found that I could tap into my deepest inner centre of being- my inner source of strength, wisdom and compassion...what a discovery!!!
I heard about NEXUS from a friend and that is why I bought the book. I told another friend about NEXUS but she had already just finished reading it and was most impressed.
It seems that people everywhere are suddenly experiencing an intense attraction to NEXUS, one of the most valuable books I've read in a long time.
Another new age novel that I highly recommend is The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO: A Remarkable Story About Living Your Heart's Desires
Spiritually Uplifting.......2007-05-21
Every once in a while you come across a book that resonates at a deeper soulful level. "Nexus: A Neo Novel" is one of those books that touches you through a spiritual journey of transformation of people in the book. Their transformation is an inner one at the level of their heart and psyche.
For Logan Andrews the transformation requires that he move from negative thoughts and emotions to positive ones. This task is fraught with difficulties, since even at a spiritual retreat intended to help people find the centre of their being called the Nexus, Logan is confronted with his greatest loss as he meets his ex, Sarah.
I really liked the sub-plot with Steven, an arrogant millionaire, who at first is irritating but in time he grows on you and becomes an endearing person. Steven believes that money is the answer to life's problems but has he lost his way?
Even though the writers of "Nexus" have their own unique voice, still this book reminds me of other visionary writers like James Redfield, Carlos Castaneda and Dan Millman. I highly recommend "Nexus" as a deeply moving experience of personal transformation whose message spiritual readers will most appreciate.
Powerful Insights.......2007-04-23
The appeal of "Nexus" lies in an original story that is fast-paced and chock-full of powerful insights. This book is about transformation as an organic process.
The novel is unique as a collaborative effort by two authors who have successfully integrated their writing into an inspiring narrative. This book explores the ups and downs of spiritual life through the journey of people at a spiritual retreat and we can relate their experiences to our own life.
I love this book for its piercing insights and a memorable soulful journey. "Nexus" reminds me of books like "The Celestine Prophecy," "The Life of Pi" and "The Alchemist" - some other books that I've enjoyed reading.

I'm glad it is a small book.......2006-08-17
The bipolar friend I gave this book too appreciated the size being small and was more willing to read it than he would have a thick "too-much-information" book. It is a great size to carry around without being conspicuous.
Small Book, Good Info..........2002-07-29
I must say that I was a little put off when I first received this book in the mail. It was quite a bit smaller than I had expected, so be prepared. It is more like an oversized booklet than a book.
For such a short "book" though, it really packs a punch. Although some of the info could use updating, it gives quite a bit of modern, useful info on how spiritual attitude, fitness, diet and supplements can play a positive role in treating anxiety and depression. The information is not comprehensive, nor could it possibly be in such a short publication. It does, however, give a lot of good, general info on how to improve your chances of overcoming anxiety and depression, and is a good starting point for more research.
It's a short read, but well worth the time and expense. I like the fact that it covers both the spiritual and physical aspects of treating anxiety and depression. A great concept. My only problem with the book is that it is not longer and more thorough.
Teenagers could use this book too!.......2002-02-18
Some people don't realize that anxiety and depression is a big deal in the teenage world today. So this book can be really helpful for teenagers too! My mother is reviewing the book again with me. Dr. Colbert delivered me when I was born at Florida Hospital and was my doctor for many years and we have a lot of respect for him. And he is a really pleasant person and always made me laugh when I was in his office
Helpful to teenagers too!!!.......2002-02-18
Some people do not realize that anxiety and depression is a big deal in the teenage world today. So this book can be really helpful for teenagers too! My mother read the book and is reviewing the book with me. Dr. Colbert delivered me when I was born at Florida Hospital 15 and a half years ago and he was my doctor for many years. We have a lot of respect for him. And he is a really pleasant person and always made me laugh when I was in his office.
Great book in a small package.......2002-01-16
Dr. Colbert's books are always very helpful. What Dr. Colbert should specify in a revised edition, is that it is helpful to take 5-HTP at night, as it is sleep inducing. The tyrosine should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, one half hour before eating. His book works well with Dr. Priscilla Slagle's "The Way Up From Down", as I've discovered. Her simple amino acid program (which includes 5-HTP and tyrosine) along with multivitamin minerals, extra B-complex, and C, does the trick to keep depression and anxiety at bay. I too, like another reader here, suffered traumatic experiences that led to my depression. God bless Dr. Colbert nonetheless for getting the word out, and continuing to enlighten the world in more than one sense!
Customer Reviews:
The best book I have ever read........2007-09-24
This book was so enlightening for me that I would say that it is the best book on the subject that I have ever read. It is well organized and gives so much insight into the process of repression and methods for overcoming repression. It is a must read for anyone trying to overcome anxiety, phobias, angry outbursts, or difficulties in marriage arising from these things. Practical and well organized, I highly recommend it!
Clarifications about the Books Ideas on Medications and Religion.......2007-02-23
Dr. Baars is not 100% the principal author of this book. Anna Terruwe was the principal author. Dr. Baars is her colleague, the translator, a contributor, and the reviser.
There is no mystical mumbo jumbo, New Age or Catholic, in this book. Dr. Terruwe found a way to explain psychiatric phenomena in the language of rational psychology and use her improved understanding of psychiatric problems to develop new and improved therapies.
People usually credit Thomas Aquinas with developing rational psychology, but Thomas took his rational psychology almost straight from Aristotle. Aristotle was not Catholic or New Age. Rational psychology fits so well with modern brain research that I'm surprised scientists don't use it when they explain their studies. We have individual senses, memory, imagination, a place in the brain where images from the individual senses are unified, and thinking in common.
God is not left out of this book, but if you took out the infrequent references to God, you would still have a profound explanation of human psychology. You don't have to be religious to benefit by this book. The only religious part is that some of the patients whose case histories are included in the book were priests or nuns. You can see how their psychiatric issues affected their religious and spiritual life and how Drs Terruwe and Baars taught them to manage the situations that came up as they matured.
Dr. Baars and Anna Terruwe were not averse to using medications if their patients could benefit from them, but the conditions in this book do not respond well to medications alone, especially obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychiatrists have not found a really good medication for it yet. Terruwe and Baars' patients got well, not just better. The doctors also sometimes prescribed massage and other therapies readily available in The Netherlands' health system in addition to medications.
I know many people with serious issues against religion who substitute Nature for God when they come across the word in Dr. Baars or Dr. Terruwe's books and just keep on reading, because they love what the two psychiatrists say, because it helps them so much.
Insightful, balanced, not at all unreasonable.......2005-09-04
If you were raised Catholic, and you hated it, you should read this book.
If you didn't hate it, or you are Catholic, you should read this book.
If you have nothing to do with Catholicism, but are familiar with a Freudian view of repression, you should read it.
If you're a parent, you should read it.
Now I would like to respond briefly to an older review:
"The treatments advocated by Konrad Baars, along with much else in the periphery of psychological treatment is a sham. These outmoded theories have been superseded by a biological understanding personality and disease as well as the innovated notions of Sigmund Freud, who, over one hundred years ago, introduced the discovery of the unconscious."
I wonder how a biological understanding has superseded anything when for every new medicine, we have two new diseases.
"The only appeal of Baars's work is its association with Catholic doctrine. But that religion is not a suitable basis for psychiatric treatment."
Not so. I am not Catholic, and I find his work compelling nonetheless. One does not have to be Catholic to see its value. But a purely biological view of man isn't suitable for therapy either.
"No psychiatric residency program in this country teaches this type of mystical, New Age mumbo-jumbo. It is soley the province of poorly-trained "counselors," social workers, and religious devotees. If you are having a problem, only the latest pharmaceutical innovations can claim to offer relief of suffering."
I'm sure. That's why I know so many people whom drugs offer little if any relief. Also, the mere fact that something isn't widely taught does nothing to disprove its worth. Montessori schools aren't widely popular, but I wouldn't say the standard academic system is superior--far from it. It takes a long time for things to become known, and when they go against the grain, longer for them to be accepted.
I would like to add that I have yet to hear a credible psychiatrist, or for that matter, any patients, claim that drugs alone will cure a mental/emotional illness. Perhaps the author of that review hasn't met many psychiatrists.
Excellent Book on the Emotional Life.......2002-11-10
Dr. Terruwe and Dr. Baars give us an excellent understanding of the healthy emotional life and what can go wrong to cause an emotional disorder. The reader is given an understanding of many of the repressive disorders which include symptoms such as tension, anxiety, depression, irritablity, anger, fatigue, scrupulosity and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Clinical cases underscore the concepts in this book, bringing the reader an understanding of the freedom available through the healing of these emotional disorders and *hope* for those afflicted. The authors' clinical discoveries are detailed along with an explanation of their therapy. Prevention of these disorders is also discussed. Many, many people have been greatly helped through these principles. This book is geared for a wide audience -- lay persons, mental health professionals and those involved in Christian ministry and the moral formation of others. (Please note that the words "psychic" and "psyche" in title of this book refer to "psychological" wholeness.)

People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Customer Reviews:
An outstanding guide for Christians caught up in terrifying feelings of shame and distrust.......2006-06-07
Highly recommended reading, Beyond The Lie: Finding Freedom From The Past by Alice Smith is an outstanding guide for Christians caught up in terrifying feelings of shame and distrust, and who are searching for an escape to a personal world less susceptible to the all consuming evils promoted by the broader culture of the world today. Providing an informed and informative mapping of the proper pathway to a spirituality healthier lifestyle, Beyond The Lie helps the reader to avoid being victimized or otherwise lapse into behaviors that would disgrace themselves and their families. Above all else, Beyond The Lie gratefully speaks to Christian readers of the glorious sacred love of Christ redeeming them from the bonds of their past, the temptations of the present, and the promise of the future.
Worthwhile read!.......2006-04-30
All people, including Christians, have traumatic events that keep them in spiritual and emotional bondage. Alice Smith is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and trauma. She began her life journey as a victim, but through the healing power of Christ, she emerged a victor.
Smith's book, Beyond the Lie: Finding Freedom from the Past offers help to all who struggle with past abuse experiences. Through personal and victim stories, biblical stories, statistics, a bibliography of suggested reading and victim resources, Smith provides readers with the necessary information to rise up, gather hope in God and walk out of the darkness.
Smith's book is laid out in a manner that makes it easy for the reader to gather the information necessary to help themselves. She discusses forms of abuse and typical responses by victims, systems of thought that can impact how you view yourself and the world, warning signs that victims send out, positive self talk and healing through Jesus Christ.
Armchair Interviews says: If you, or someone you know has suffered abuse, Beyond the Lie: Finding Freedom from the Past is a valuable gift to give.
You can be free.......2006-04-07
I really liked this book. It's easy to read and her stories are real clear. Alice shares in a way that hurting people of this world can be set free of their past. First Alice shares how as a child she was victimized and how she struggled with her abuse for years. But she doesn't stop there she goes on to skillfully explain how we can be free from the torment that has kept us bound all of our life. It really is a lie you know, we don't have to remain a victim! We can be set free. This book will help change your life.
no more a victim!.......2006-04-02
No wasted words here! I found this book easy to read, succinct and to the point. It demonstrated how childhood rape or molestation can be overcome through prayer, with graphs and charts that were very helpful. The author made clear how to overcome a victim mindset. Especially helpful were definitions of spiritual warfare terms, how demons find ways to attach themselves, and how to get rid of these parasites. ("you've got worms?") Yes, this book helped me gain confidence and put away fear. Highly recommended!
Find Freedom, Find Peace & Experience a Changed Life.......2006-04-02
I am thrilled to recommend "Beyond the Lie" to anyone who has suffered at the hands of others, experienced traumas or ever asked the question of how to turn suffering and difficulties into something better vs years of repeated pain. The transparent stories, biblical principles and step by step instructions are the result of over 35 years of counseling and ministry.
In almost 15 years of working alongside Alice's ministry, I have seen thousands of lives impacted and changed by the insights shared in "Beyond the Lie". Personally my life is completely different than where I was years ago when I first met Alice. "Beyond the Lie" can make a difference in your life as well!

Book Description
Many of you who appear to have life under control are simply great actors. Underneath you live with inner tensions, anxiety or panic states, feelings of hopelessness or paranoia, racing thoughts, ongoing anger, bone-weary fatigue. . . . The good news is that all this is fixable.
What is the best treatment for ongoing depression, mood swings, exhaustion, and anxiety? Psychotherapy? Prescription drugs? Or is there a natural way that works better and is safer, faster, and cheaper? There is, and now Joan Mathews Larson, Ph.D., the brilliant nutritionist who founded Minnesota's esteemed Health Recovery Center, offers her revolutionary formulas for healing your emotions--biochemically. Twenty years of working with both addicted and nonaddicted patients has shown Larson that unhealthy and unstable moods are the result of the chemistry of our physical brains and are not psychological in origin. When you feed your imbalanced brain what it craves--the key essential fatty acids (EFAs), natural mind-body hormones, and the right amino acids--most mood swings, depressions, anxiety, and other upsets will disappear, even if they have a genetic basis.
Through proven all-natural formulas, Seven Weeks to Emotional Healing will help you find the emotional stability and well-being you've been missing your entire life. Inside you'll discover how to
- Screen yourself for emotional and behavioral symptoms
- Recognize the mental and physical clues that indicate biochemical imbalances
- Find an open-minded health practitioner
- Eat the right foods for optimal mental fitness
Dr. Larson also provides her unique anti-aging formula that restores sexual function, rejuvenates the immune system, elevates mood and energy levels, reduces stress, and expands your life span!
Seven Weeks to Emotional Healing is both responsible and effective--and gives you the tools you need to find lasting emotional health and contentment for the first time in your life.

Limited Diet.......2007-09-11
The book is very interesting and certainly has merit. Most of the diet recommendations would not work for me because of dairy, cholesterol, sugar, and arthritis issues.
If the author could find a diet that more people could be on or more choices in the diet, I might have followed it.
I did take the time to fill out the questions, and found the results interesting. Worth getting the book, just for this.
Depression free naturally ; 7 weeks to eliminating anxiety, despair, fatigue and anger.......2007-09-09
Great book! Everyone who has addiction or suffering from depression should read it. This book tells you how you can get well and keep well
with vitamins and supplements instead of drugs that have after effects. Dr Mathews really cares for people and want to help them get well and keep well. I wish I had read this book long time ago.
Depressed? It could be your starved brain crying out for..........2007-05-29
Did you know your brain can send you into depression if you don't give it the right bio-chemical food?
If it gets to much of 1 sort of mineral for example it can go into a toxic pattern and send you even further down.
This book is a very comprehensive & easy to understand guide to bio-chemical imbalances in your brain that may be triggering depression, anxiety, anger, compulsive disorders etc.
Using vitamins, minerals, amino acids, hormones, etc, Joan Mathews-Larsen has been treating people with emotional & alcoholic disorders since 1980 & knows what she's talking about.
A psychologist once told me there are three things you need to do to treat emotional illness -
1, councilling, hypnotherapy etc.
2, balance the brains bio-chemicals using drugs or preferably with vitamins, minerals, amino acids etc.
3, make your own decisions about what you want to do in life.
If you do all three, you'll be much better off.
Joan Mathews-Larsen's book definitely address's balancing the brains bio-chemicals - it helped me discover an illness called Pyroluria which was sabotaging my body and starving me of zinc, manganese, magnesium B6 and P5P....
Buy this book to make sure your brain isn't running low on bio-chemical fuel and spiraling you into depression .
spread the word.......2007-05-11
I personally have not tested the recommendations in this book yet, but there are SO MANY people dealing with chemical imblanaces in this day. I have always been convinced that fast food (lack of nutrition) and different chemicals in our environment have played a HUGE role in the problem. This book really offers a confirmation for what I have believed- PLUS it gives a way out. Apparently a very successful way out. I am also going to read the book by the same author on getting sober- using a proven nutritional program. The comments on violent behavior among felons are revolutionary. The author explores a way to diagnose this as a chemical imblance and gives specific nutritional solutions. The thought that if we provided better nutrition for our society we could cut crime back. Drug addiction- also a problem nutritionally -
For a better world --spread the word!!! Read this book!
Excellent book!.......2007-05-07
This book is excellent. Provides detailed information about conditions and the products that can help heal it. I have shared the book with several friends and every single one of them have bought the book, shared the information with others, or will buy it in the near future. In fact that is the way I came to know about it and bought it.
