New Look at Old Problem.......2007-10-05
I've read a lot of books on how to lose weight. This is the first one that deals with the underlying emotional issues and not just controling the food. As a health care professional, I highl recommend this book.
excellent book.......2007-10-04
This book has had a life changing effect on me. I am so glad I bought it.
More than just a weight-loss book!.......2007-08-17
There are SO many books on this subject to choose from. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. It comes from a very loving place and offers some very real advice about why you are overweight and some real suggestions about what you can do about it. It goes deep at times, but once you realize that the outside is just a symptom, you can start focusing on what really matters and make changes that will last. The author suggests that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full, from -2 to 2 on a scale from -10 to 10 (so about every 2 or 3 hours). She encourages you to really pay attention to your body because it will let you know what it wants and needs. She asks you to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes, and not eating or doing anything else to avoid your feelings. She wants her clients and readers to work with their bodies and no longer against them. It sounds simple, and it is, it's just that the whole subject has gotten so complicated we feel that there needs to be an elaborate answer. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
~"We have been trained not to waste food in the garbage, but to waste it on our bodies. Either way it is wasted. In one way, we just carry the waste with us."
~"Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy."
****~If you believe that you will always be overweight, it will be very difficult to lose weight permanently. Beliefs and reality like to be reflective of each other. When reality starts to contradict a belief, a tension is created in our life and this tension makes us uncomfortable...At this point, we have two choices to reduce the tension: change the belief system or change the reality...to sabotage our reality and gain our weight back in order to be back in line with what we believe...It's not until we get hold of the belief and change it that we find any permanent weight-loss results."****
This would explain why most "diets" fail, because they are just treating the symptom and not the underlying problem.
This book is amazing and it was a total surprise, since I stumbled on it "accidentally." It works from the inside out, which is the best way to go about a permanent change. There are a lot of great exercises and suggestions. It was definitely worth my time and money, and I've already made a lot of the changes suggested in this book, and I feel more in control of my life and healthier already. A paradigm shift and a Fabulous book! =)
Very pleased.......2007-08-06
I almost cancelled my order for this book because I was very skeptical but I am so glad I received this book! I read over the entire book in a weekend and now re-reading it and doing the exercises. The exercises are an important part of the book. This is not just a book you should read but also need to work through the worksheets she includes. I've been overweight my entire life and for me this is the best book I've followed for losing weight. I do think this is a lot more than just about weight loss. By following the book will find greater joy in life. A lot of the info in the book can be used by everyone, not just those trying to lose weight. Highly recommend. Wish this book had been written 25 years ago!
A happy surprise.......2007-07-04
I have to admit I was skeptical, but this book does a great job of explaining eating in a healthy way. Forget trying to remember the proper portion size, because the way Castillo does it is way more simple and more attuned to your body. I go back to this book when I find myself starting to overeat or craving unhealthy food. It was definately worth the purchase!

The Usual Self Help Book.......2006-11-11
I did not find this book to have any "solutions." It was simply the usual self-help book which never goes to the root of any problem.
Finally No More Diets!.......2006-06-29
I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.
My mom told me about Geneen Roth when I was in my early twenties and she stopped dieting then and never struggled with food since, but I couldn't give up that the next diet would be the miracle that I needed! I was at most lowest point recently and read another book of Geneen's 'When Food Is Love.' I was hooked! That book was a great read, but this allows you to do the work.
I've finally given up the word 'diet' in my vocabulary, in my life.
Don't waste your time or money.......2004-09-14
This book is not what I expected. It's more of a "workbook" instead of a book to read. I was thoroughly disappointed.
A Life-Transforming Experience.......2003-04-30
Having struggled with an eating disorder for the past 10 years of my life, I was certain that I would never have a healthy relationship with food again. But, then a good friend gave me Geneen's book, and I have not looked back since on those doubtful thoughts. This is a truely incredible program that, when followed and supplemented with Geneen's books "When Food Is Love" and "Feeding the Hungry Heart", can and will take the word "diet" out of your vocabularly forever. I have never felt better about myself and have never actually lost weight while still eating anything I wanted.
has changed my attitudes toward myself and toward food.......1999-12-12
Roth has created a wonderful, insightful compilation of exercises which, when combined with a lot of hard work on your part, can change your life. She will change your feelings about yourself and about why you eat. The exercises take a long time to get through because they are so emotionally demanding, but it is a worthwhile process. If you are ready to take a hard look at what really motivates you to open your cupboard, and examine those dark feelings you hide even from yourself, buy this book.

Early Energy Therapy Book, Of Historical Interest.......2006-10-19
***
This book deals with eating for reasons other than hunger, and maintains that the reason people do this is that they are anxious. The author believes that what is actually going on when people overeat is that their body's electrical or energetic system is out of balance. Their systems can be rebalanced so that overeating is no longer necessary. Thus, the cause of the problem is dealt with instead of the symptoms. It explores this phenomenon of eating when not hungry and offers a cure via the "Callahan Techniques", a precursor to EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). Callahan Techniques involves using specific algorithms to deal with overeating, gluttony, impatience to lose weight, etc. to rid the body of energy blockages. This book was interesting historically for me; it was a bit of energy therapy history since it was written over fifteen years ago.
The book is written in a sales pitch style; fifteen years ago these ideas were new and readers would need to be persuaded of their veracity. Today, there is more openness to and familiarity with energy therapy, so the style of this book is a bit off-putting.
The Callahan Techniques involves tapping on various of the body's acupuncture points while saying various affirmation statements. The steps are illustrated in the book and are very easy to follow.
This book would be somewhat useful for anyone dealing with eating when not hungry, if the reader can get past the writing style. It also would be of interest to current EFT practitioners wanting to read an early energy therapy book. However, much more useful would be any book written today on EFT, and there are many. I especially recommend "The Promise of Energy Psychology".

When an entire society is told that thinner is better and studies everywhere agree diets don't work, it's time to take a look at the assumptions behind the messages. For better or worse, this happens in Paul Campos' (Jurismania) book The Obesity Myth. Packed full of lengthy discussions of popular studies (particularly the Harvard nurses study), dense chapters run through statistics and conclusions at a breathtaking pace. Campos regularly insists on two points: BMI is basically meaningless, and a variety of media-based sources are contributing to an enormous industry that blends oversized portions with trendy, potentially harmful, diets. He grabs attention to the first claim with early assertions that by BMI standards, Brad Pitt is overweight and George Clooney is obese; more detailed discussion covers how insurance companies developed the BMI tables in their earliest forms and the federal government later tinkered with measurements in a way that accounts for much of the sudden "explosion" in obesity (yes, a BMI chart is included at the end of the book). Repeatedly, Campos rails against media stars whose main qualification is their leanness, questions medical conclusions, and demands that we look at weight as a class issue. Also highlighted is the idea of the diet industry being an extremely powerful political force, which may be at the root of the controversy; the hollering about his sources is likely to be louder than the comments about his accuracy in assessing those sources. As with any highly inflammatory topic, a single book presents only a part of the whole picture--but the myth-busting opinions offered here are an important part of the weight-based discussions. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Campos makes his case against the fat kills dogma with unimpeachable evidence. The Obesity Myth should be required reading for every health professional in America. I believe any open-minded person who reads this book will conclude that we've been duped by a pack of self-serving lies. And we cannot get at the truth without first recognizing those lies. The Obesity Myth is a great place to start. Glenn A. Gaesser, Ph.D., professor and director, Kinesiology Program, University of Virginia
Is your weight hazardous to your health? According to public-health authorities, 65 percent of us are overweight. Every day, we are bombarded with dire warnings about America's obesity epidemic. Close to half of the adult population is dieting, obsessed with achieving an arbitrary ideal weight. Yet studies show that a moderately active larger person is likely to be far healthier (and to live longer) than someone who is thin but sedentary. And contrary to what the fifty-billion-dollar-per-year weight-loss industry would have us believe medical science has not yet come up with a way to make people thin.
After years spent scrutinizing medical studies and interviewing leading doctors, scientists, eating- disorder specialists, and psychiatrists, Professor Paul Campos is here to lead the backlash against weight hysteriaand to show that we can safeguard our health without obsessing about the numbers on the scale. But The Obesity Myth is not just a compelling argument, grounded in the latest scientific research; it's also a provocative, wry exposé of the culture that feeds on our self-defeating war on fat. Campos will show:
* How the nation's most prestigious and trusted media sources consistently misinform the public about obesity
* What the movie industry's love affair with the fat suit tells us about the relationship between racial- and body-based prejudice in America
* How the skinny elitewith their supersized lifestyles and gas-guzzling SUVsproject their anxieties about overconsumption on the poorer and heavier underclass
* How weight-loss mania fueled the impeachment of Bill Clinton
In this paradigm-busting read, Professor Campos challenges the conventional wisdom regarding the medical, political, and cultural meaning of weight and brings a rational and compelling new voice to America's increasingly irrational weight debate.

Outstanding job, Dr. Campos!.......2007-09-19
The "War on Obesity" is actually an attack on fat and fat people. Thank heavens for Paul Campos who clearly and precisely lays out the argument against continuing to fight this war, and the reasons why it was a bad idea to begin with. Is it any coincidence that Americans are fatter than ever and they are also dieting more than ever? I think not.
As a fat aerobics instructor and personal trainer, and as an activist in the movement toward fat acceptance, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
the diet industry's reality check.......2007-06-19
I had first heard of this book a few years back,
but never got around to reading it until last
night. This book completely changed my view
of my body, the diet industry, and America in
general.
The best parts of the book talk about how the diet
industry plays on people's insecurities, in order
to make money. Does the pharmaceutical companies
really care about the average American? No.
Unlike most diet commercials and products, Campos
uses hard-hitting facts to hammer home his main
point: that by yo-yo dieting, Americans are playing
a dangerous game with their bodies.
Kudos to Campos for destroying the stereotypical
notion that fat people cannot be fit. The correlation
between Bill Clinton, weight, and his impeachment
is also very, very interesting.
This book is recommended for anyone, fat or thin, who
is ready to make peace with their bodies and tired
of buying the hype that fuels the diet industry.
Tells it Like it Is.......2007-06-17
If you want to see how the government and doctors and others are trying to convince us how the majority of us are killing ourselves with fat, read this book.
Fat fit people are healthier than skinny unfit people.
Read the book and learn more.
They have been lying to us again........2006-05-09
This is a very interesting book. It is not a book that will tell you how to become a normal eater, although it is obvious that he not only knows about normal eating trends, but approves of them. The book is mainly about how the diet industry has been lying to us about the obesity research out there, and how 95% or more of all diets result in people not just gaining it all back, mostly very quickly, but gaining back more than they lost in the first place. He also says that the height/weight charts are not reasonable and that the whole BMI thing is a fraud.
His main focus is that a person who is overweight, or even obese, is not necessarily unhealthy. If they are active physically, they can be more healthy than someone who is very thin and sedentary. He also thinks that the point where the height/weight charts say a person is overweight, and the second place where they are supposed to be obese, are set way too low.
And then he had to admit he had been losing weight the whole time he was writing, and that it ended up being a substantial amount of weight. He knows that part of it was that he began running in races, so he was training for competition for the first time in his life. I think he also began normal eating techniques, and what he calls healthy eating. Not a weight loss diet, but a diet for health that most people would not lose weight on.
Most of the normal eating books go into some of the material in this book in an attempt to explain why we need to give diets up, but they don't have the room for it in this detail. He after all, used 250 pages to tell his story.
Eye Opening.......2006-03-22
This book made me think in a whole new way about todays culture. I didn't agree with every thing in it but it made me open my eyes to so much that I think it is a must read for anyone no matter what their size.

Eating the right foods in the proper order leads to pleasurable and healthy living, promises Michel Montignac, in The French Diet. His urgent message to Americans: scrap the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and embrace the Glycemic Index (GI)--a standard ranking system he uses to separate "good" carbohydrates from "bad," based on how quickly foods release glucose into the bloodstream. Montignac theorizes that pairing low-GI foods with good fat (like olive oil), and eating foods in a specific order, is a habit that the famously lean French have long practiced. Says Montignac, this diet is neither low-carb nor low-fat; instead, it is "the right-carb and the right-fat diet."
Consider the logic: eat three square meals a day, based on the food-combining rules provided; make lunchnot dinnerthe biggest meal (don't worry about calories); avoid sugar, regular coffee, and the wrong fats. Snacks? No need. Snacking is a poor habit practiced by those whose regular meals don't contain sufficient metabolic staying power; following Montignac's system should solve that problem. Drink wine or champagne--but only in moderation, and only after meals. Montignac's sample menus and 80 recipes feature smart breakfasts, indulgent lunches, dinner entrees, and fruity or chocolaty desserts. He also includes meatless options, but double-check the ingredients before launching into a dish marked "Vegetarian Appropriate;" one such recipe begins with 1/3 pound chopped slab bacon.--Liane Thomas

Chicken with Apples and Cider Cream
Phase 1 and Phase 2 (appropriate for both weight loss and weight maintenance)
Serves 5
Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour 40 minutes
One 3-pound free range chicken
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 pounds apples, peeled and coarsely chopped
3/4 cup apple cider
1 cube chicken bouillon
3/4 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons goose fat or olive oil (See Note)
salt, freshly ground pepper, cayenne, and ground cinnamon, to taste
Preheat the oven to 425º
Brush the chicken with a tablespoon of goose fat (or olive oil). Season with the salt, pepper, and cayenne, and place in a roasting pan. Roast for approximately 1 hour 40 minutes, or until juice runs clear.
Meanwhile, heat the remaining tablespoon of goose fat (or olive oil), and sauté the chopped apples, stirring regularly, for about 10 minutes, until the apples are softened. Season liberally with salt, pepper, and cinnamon. Reserve.
To make the cider cream sauce, boil the cider in a saucepan and reduce by three quarters. Add the chicken bouillon cube and dissolve well. Then add the heavy cream. Bring to a boil and turn off the heat. Correct the seasoning if necessary. After the chicken has roasted for about 1 hour 15 minutes, arrange the apples around the chicken in the roasting pan.
When ready, cut up the chicken, coat with the reheated cream of cider and serve with the cinnamon apples.
Note: Goose fat is available in some specialty gourmet shops and can also be ordered from gourmet supply stores online. If you are unable to find it, substitute olive oil.

Book Description
The French have the lowest average body weight per capita in the western world, and yet they eat famously well. Montignac explains in The French Diet that this not only has to do with which foods the French choose to eat, but their quality, freshness, and most importantly, the way that they are combined. Although the book is based on the concept of glycemic index (GI), which other diet books discuss, The French Diet is the only book that provides the net GI values of combined foods. Already a phenomenon for years in Europe, Montignac's dieting methods have been helpful to tens of thousands of people around the world who have achieved impressive and long-lasting results and reduced their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The diet has also found a celebrity following among devotees like singer Kylie Minogue and fashion designer Christian Lacroix.
Written for a range of readers, from those who dine out frequently, to yo-yo dieters, to those who don¹t want to give up wine or "the good life" but who do want to lose weight, The French Diet reveals the secret to living, eating, and looking like the French with this delicious, deprivation-free diet.

This is the REAL way to lose weight.......2006-06-20
My husband and I have tried every diet known to man (and woman). All have had some flaw or another that made them difficult to maintain (boring, expensive, just plain hungry). This diet focuses on Glycemic Index, so many carbs and fats are acceptable. The diet is very easy to follow long term, we don't get hungry, and many of the recipes included are really good! We even eat chocolate and drink wine... regularly!!! And we have each lost about 15 pounds in the 3 months we have been following this plan. This is a great plan for long term success, and is our new way of eating. It's not an instant weight loss program, but finally one we have found that we can comfortably follow for the long term and lose weight consistently.
The French Diet.......2006-03-24
The information in this book was direct & to the point in leading people to make healthy, dietary changes in one's life that are not too extreme & has been very helpful for me. I like that there are recipes included as well. This eating regimine is something one can easily do as a lifestyle change. I liked this type of diet as I don't need to focus on food or what I will be eating next as has happened with other diets.
Great for diabetics.......2005-12-02
I purchased this book 4 years ago under the title "Eat Yourself Slim" after visiting my family in Canada where this book was popular. Following this diet was easy, I was never hungry, I lost weight. The best news was that as a diabetic on medication, 3 months later my diabetis was under control, no more pills and my doctor was amazed. Highly recommend it.

Book Description
The hormone cortisol, activated by the fight-or-flight (stress) response, is emerging as a major culprit in a variety of health problems. The Cortisol Connection explores the documented relationship between elevated levels of this hormone, chronic stress, and such health conditions as obesity, depression, suppressed immune system, osteoporosis, and hypertension. The book shows how to control cortisol through supplements, dozens of which are discussed in detail in a chapter on the SENSE program (Stress Management, Exercise, Nutrition, Supplementation, Evaluation), with short, practical recommendations in each category. Also included are warnings on the use of ephedra- and caffeine-based weight-loss supplements, which actually cause weight gain, along with resources and references.

Sensible guide for reducing stress and feeling better.......2007-10-02
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (9/07)
If you are living in the USA, or really anywhere in the so-called "developed" world, chances are you are stressed beyond belief. While stress used to be taken lightly in the past, there was a lot of research performed on how it affects us and in recent years doctors are calling attention to all of the risks associated with it. If you think your life is not really complicated enough for you to qualify as being under stress, consider this paragraph from "The Cortisol Connection" by Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., which clearly shows that one does not need to be a CEO to be under stress:
"The most direct example of the chronically elevated human stress response can be observed every day in the lives of a large part of the American (and worldwide) population. Those are the folks who are driving a junker car (and hoping it makes it) to their second job. They are hoping that the money from that second paycheck will last until the end of the month when the bills are due. They are not the people whom you see commiseration about their terrible jobs on sitcoms such as Friends. The constant unrelenting stress of making ends meet, job instability, sleep deprivation, poor diet, lack of outlets for stress, and overall lack of control combine to increase the risk of disease by a factor of five to ten!"
A factor of five to ten is scarily high, so getting stress and the risks under control would certainly be a good idea. "The Cortisol Connection" is an extremely helpful guide in this process, clearly explaining the risk factors, possible effects of those factors and ways and means of controlling stress and taking control of your life. The proposed solution, called the SENSE Lifestyle Program, is more than a diet, since it incorporates several key elements; such as stress management, exercise, nutrition and supplements. Although the book is very detailed and in parts quite "technical," the overall program seems to be eminently sensible and not impossible to follow.
While I have no experience in the medical field and cannot evaluate the book from that perspective, I was clearly impressed by the amount of research that went into this book, as is evident from the extremely extensive "References" section. I found the language easy-to-follow and easily understandable. While an average reader might not care for all the medical references and explanations, I believe most anybody could and should follow the recommendations of the SENSE Lifestyle Program, especially since it was extensively researched and tested.
I would highly recommend "The Cortisol Connection" to any reader who wants to take responsibility for his or her own health and well-being and actually do something about it.
Some science and lots of baloney.......2006-10-04
Current scientific understanding of cortisol's role in stress, disease, weight gain and so on is useful general information, even if it doesn't tell specifically how to endure and surmount the stress of modern life. However, this information is conveyed much more effectively in other books such as Sapolsky's _Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers._
The distinctive feature of _The Cortisol Connection_ is that it tells you what to do about excessive cortisol secretion. Unfortunately, what it tells you do to is complete baloney. A few of the many nutritional supplements he recommends -- magnesium, for example, might be mildly helpful for a few people who have bad eating habits and don't take conventional vitamins and minerals.
All the other recommendations for nutritional supplements lack scientific foundation. Any author can just make this stuff up. Then another author cites the first author, a third author cites the second, and a fourth author cites the first, in a round robin of nonsense. Then other authors claim that these multiple citations prove that the value of such supplements is well-recognzied. This kind of pseudoscience stinks to high heaven, and it makes modern life more stressful than it must be.
Good advice on controlling stress and cortisol.......2006-06-30
Don't automatically dismiss this book because Shawn Talbott, comaker of the Cortislim brand of supplements, is the author. He does not hawk his wares in this book. Instead, he talks about common-sense issues relating to chronic stress in modern society and the simple steps you can take to reduce that stress.
Most humorously he compares humans to Zebras and discusses that while the Zebra and the human both have the same fight-or-flight mechanism that releases the stress hormone cortisol during times of emergencies, at least the Zebra is responding to events in which he can quickly flee or actually fight. Humans in modern society have the fight-or-flight mechanism in response to situations in which they cannot quickly resolve the problem - credit card bills, layoffs, mortgage payments, even traffic jams. Since fighting or fleeing are not options, the hormone cortisol builds up in our systems on a semi-permanent basis eventually causing such problems as insulin resistence, autoimmune diseases, and even cardiovascular disease.
The author talks about simple steps you can take to reduce the effect of this inevitable stress on your health via the SENSE program which stands for stress management, exercise, nutrition, supplements, and evaluation. Again, most of his advice is good common sense, and he backs up what he says with chemical descriptions, in layman's terms, of what is going on in your body as you apply or fail to apply stress management techniques.
The section on supplements is general and all-in-all pretty good advice. The author suggests vitamins B and C as well as magnesium for targeting stress in general. The author suggests lesser known supplements such as magnolia bark, epimedium, and L-theanine for actual cortisol control. These just happen to be some of the ingredients in the author's Cortislim supplement, as well as other brands of cortisol control supplements, but since the author never mentions the product by name, he really isn't guilty of advertising.
I really have only two negative comments. First, the author is wrong to tell people to not have their cortisol tested scientifically by a lab, since these tests are quite reliable, and it will do you no good to apply the right solution to the wrong problem. The second negative comment is that some of the lesser known supplements can have negative side effects on susceptible individuals. For example, the author promotes the use of ginseng as an "adaptogen", or an agent that helps or adapts the body or protects it from stress. In fact, ginseng can cause dangerous blood pressure rises in susceptible individuals. If we are talking about someone who may already have elevated blood pressure due to stress, the combination could be lethal. Thus you should do some further investigation before ingesting the lesser known supplements suggested in the book.
On the whole, though, this is a helpful manual for dealing with chronic stress and you should see some improvement in your health and state of mind by following the author's advice. Just be careful when dealing with nutritional supplements. Just because something is all natural does not mean it is safe for everybody.
Do you think Dr Talbott's cortisol levels are up?.......2006-01-16

Cortislim Promoters Forfeit $4.5 Million in FTC Settlement
September 21, 2005
Three defendants will forfeit $4.5 million in cash and other assets to settle Federal Trade Commission charges stemming from their roles in the marketing of CortiSlim and CortiStress, dietary supplements promoted for weight loss and disease prevention
In its complaint, the FTC alleged that the defendants made false or unsubstantiated product claims and used deceptively formatted infomercials in pitching the dietary supplements.
The surrendered assets will include an investment partnership and related charitable foundation, a speedboat, a truck, and a variety of real estate interests. As part of the settlement, the defendants cannot seek a cash refund of state or federal taxes for 2003, 2004, or 2005 that were paid prior to the settlement.
The FTC alleges that advertising claims about CortiSlim's ability to, among other things, cause rapid, substantial, and permanent weight loss in all users were false or unsubstantiated, as were claims about CortiStress's ability to reduce the risk of, or prevent, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
The FTC also alleges that CortiSlim and CortiStress infomercials were deceptively formatted to appear as talk shows rather than advertisements. The advertising campaign for CortiSlim ran nationwide, including ads on broadcast and cable television, radio, print media, and the Internet.
The defendants in the settlement announced today, California-based Pinnacle Marketing Concepts, Inc. and its president, Thomas F. Cheng, and Utah-based Shawn M. Talbott, cannot make benefit or efficacy claims for any dietary supplement, food, drug, cosmetic, or device unless the claims are truthful and substantiated. Litigation continues against the four defendants who have not settled.
In September 2004, the Commission filed a complaint against Window Rock Enterprises, Inc.; Stephen F. Cheng; Infinity Advertising, Inc.; Gregory S. Cynaumon; and Shawn M. Talbott. The Commission later amended its complaint to add Pinnacle and Thomas F. Cheng as additional defendants.
The FTC announced two separate stipulated final agreements and orders for permanent injunction today, one with Pinnacle and its president, Thomas Cheng, who the FTC alleges participated in the marketing of Cortislim and CortiStress; and one with Talbott, who the FTC alleges formulated the two products and participated in the advertising.
Both orders prohibit the making of certain claims about CortiSlim and CortiStress and require competent and reliable scientific evidence to support any other claims made about the products.
The orders also bar misrepresentations of any tests or studies and prohibit claims about the performance, effects on weight, or other health benefits of any dietary supplement, food, drug, cosmetic, or device unless the claims are true, not misleading, and substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence. Finally, both orders prohibit the use of deceptively formatted television and radio advertisements and require the use of "paid advertisement" disclosures for television ads longer than 15 minutes and for radio ads longer than five minutes.
The settlement with Pinnacle and Thomas Cheng requires them to give up $3.4 million in assets: $700,000 cash; the net proceeds from an investment partnership and related charitable foundation; a $215,000 boat; a $40,000 truck; and a $450,000 property lien. If they are later found to have misrepresented their financial status, the two defendants would be liable for a $23.8 million judgment.
The settlement with Talbott requires him to give up $1.12 million in assets: $225,000 cash; $350,000 from equity in property in Centerville, Massachusetts, or title to the property; $38,700 from the sale of a timeshare in Hawaii or title to the timeshare; and cash equal to 80 percent of the current market value of a property in Lisbon, Ohio, or title to the property. If Talbott is later found to have misrepresented his financial status, he would be liable for a $3.5 million judgment.
Under the agreements, the defendants also assign to the FTC all claims they might have against the other defendants in this case, and they will not use their settlement with the Commission as a basis for seeking a cash refund of income taxes that they reported as paid. In addition, the agreements include standard record-keeping provisions and require the defendants to distribute copies of the orders to certain entities and individuals.
Hidden Danger!.......2006-01-01
Overall, the book is fairly well written and easy to follow. The recommendations (dietary and other) would probably be helpful...if indeed your problems are due to elevated cortisol levels. However, on pgs. 78-79, the author makes the serious mistake of discouraging the use of hormone testing to determine actual cortisol levels. Instead, he recommends that you use his questionnaire (pg. xvi) as your sole guideline. Unfortunately, most of those questions deal with general stressors which nearly everyone experiences, along with other general health related questions. The point is, anyone could get a high score on this questionnaire, including those with high cortisol; low cortisol; fibromyalgia; chronic fatigue syndrome, and any number of other ailments. This creates a very serious problem, because if someone with low levels of cortisol (common in CFS, for instance) were to take some of the supplements that the author recommends, that person's already weak adrenal glands would be depleted even further, with potentially catastrophic consequences. So, my recommendation is to read this book with an open mind, but definitely get your cortisol levels tested (contrary to the author's opinion, salivary cortisol testing has proven quite reliable) before using any of the herbs or other supplements suggested.

Book Description
Despite $33 billion spent annually on diet and exercise programs, over half of American adults are overweight, and one in five is obese. Many people lose weight in the initial stages of dieting but then get off track, return to their original weight, and become trapped in a discouraging cycle. In this book, two behavioral-change experts help readers identify their particular reasons for getting off track in the past and learn to address those issues in the present. The authors offer ten key proven strategies for sticking with a diet or exercise plan and maintaining weight loss, including creating a readiness to change; stating and knowing the goal; and creating a supportive environment.

Good information in a small package.......2007-06-14
There are no gimmicks in this book, just good solid advice for the novice and experienced dieter. If you'd like to probe some of the reasons behind your lack of success as a dieter, this book can help in that process. Some of the advice may appear obvious at first, but over time, there'll be themes you turn to over and over again in your specific journey.
There are 10 chapters. My favorites in the book are (in order of my preference):
Chapter 7-- Are Unruly Emotions Ruling Your Life?
Chapter 4 -- Do You Accept Responsibility for the Choices You Make?
Chapter 8 -- How Do You Treat Your Mistakes?
Each chapter deals with a specific behavior or belief system that might be interfering with your success at losing weight. Chapter 3 goes over the possible hidden agendas you may have but may not be aware of. Chapter 1 tests whether or not you are ready for change. Each section has questions you can ask yourself to see if the information may be applicable. Then there are direct, short solutions offered for many of the primary problems as defined in the section.
This is not a book for people who like new gimmicks or preachy writing. It is a guidebook written by two PH.D psychologists who have years of experience. And yet it doesn't read like a dissertation. It has a very practical "hands on" tone. If you want real world advice, this is a good book to read.
Far Too Simplistic.......2006-09-18
This book might work for someone who has never thought about goals and priorities, who is grossly overweight, and considers exercise evil.
I'm twenty pounds overweight, eat less than a thousand healthy calories a day, and do mild exercise (I'm 57 and have had a heart attack). My doctors can't figure out why I gained weight. My nutritionist can't figure it out. They all just write it off as "Oh, well, you're older and maybe your metabolism has slowed down." Big help.
I thought I'd learn something from this book that might enlighten me, but it's all just dirt-simple basic logic. If you know your motives, have set goals, and are aware of what you're doing and why, this book won't offer anything new. If you're trying to diet and exercise for the first time and are completely clueless, you may get something out of it.
Very helpful!.......2006-07-24
This book was very helpful to me as it really delved into the motivations behind my dietary failures. I learned quite a bit from the different sections about not taking responsibility for my actions (or inactions) and not putting my needs high enough on my priority list. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for more of a psychological take on dietary failures.
Not Just for for Stated Purposes.......2006-02-17
I would have given it 4 stars for somewhat condensed writing style (almost abstract-like) had it not been for the nearly universal applicability of the book's ideas to many other areas besides weight loss and excercise: business, career, relationships, housekeeping, etc.
Helpful for your barriers to any goal!.......2003-08-25
I appreciated this concise, well written guide to weight loss and exercise. It was especially helpful because it put responsiblity in the hands of the only person with the power to affect change in my life, me. This book helped me pinpoint barriers to exercising regularly and develop startegies chapter by chapter to keep on track. More importantly, I found this book a good tool in identifying and working through barriers in all aspects of my life. I hardily reccommend it.

Never Too Thin: Why Roberta Seid is Crazy.......2004-03-22
In her book, "Never Too Thin: Why Women Are at War with Their Bodies," Roberta Seid analyzes the obsession with thinness, which she calls a religion, in today's society. Despite this obsession and today's medical breakthroughs, more Americans are obese than ever before. Seid, a respected lecturer at the University of Southern California, suggests abandoning this religion and encouraging a more realistic body image.
Seid says that the pursuit of a fat-free body has turned into a new way of life and a new religion. Also, although the female body hasn't changed, the ideal female has. In the past, full-fugured women were desired. Now, the health and insurance industries have convinced the average Americans to lose weight. Body image standards are higher for women than they are for men. She also argues that beauty and fashion hold too high a place in our society. She suggests finding a happy medium between thinness and obesity. She urges that we "dismantle this new religion, because it is misguided and destructive." Lastly, she states "We must restore a humanistic vision in which self-improvement means cultivating the mind and enlarging the soul."
The author assumes that everyone wants a fat-free body. Many people are happy with their weight and don't want to change. The practice of fasting is already a widely practiced religious rite. The ideal female has changed over the years due largely from changes in fashion and the media. But, fashion and the media are just cyclical. In the past, it was considered better to be obese. Fatter was considered better than being thin in the past. The Mona Lisa, considered beautiful in the Rennaissance, could not even be compared with today's women. it was considered unhealthy to be skinny. The health and insurance industries are right to encourage Americans to lose weight. 60% of Americans are overweight, and 1/4 are obese. This is costing these industries billions of dollars each year. Adults and children are growing fatter each year. Men also face pressure to have the right body. They need to have good looks to attract women, not just money. Men also experience eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Not all people are created equal. There are people that are thin, average, and fat. There is no reason to punish those who aren't average. People should just learn to accept who they are. The "new religion" makes people more confident about themselves. The better you look, the better you feel. For those who don't look good, simply things, such as diet and exercise, can give you this confidence.
People have always been self-conscious. This "unrealistic vision" is the healthiest way to live. Being overweight puts you at greater risk for heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
Roberta Seid is an old, bitter, fat women.
A must-read for anyone who has a "weight problem".......1998-03-20
In the era of "The Fat of the Land" and Fen-Phen, this book deserves a wider readership. The author convincingly shows that the supposed "obesity epidemic" of modern times has to do more with changing standards than with reality. And her analysis of the "scientific" basis of the Met Life weight tables is an eye-opener and deserves to be better known. This book is a great antidote for the ever-increasing plague of diet books, and I hope to see it back in print soon.
Outstanding. Well researched, well written........1997-06-11
This is an exceptional book; I am dismayed to learn that it is out of print! A must-read for anyone, male or female, who has spent a significant part of their life on a diet. Dr. Seid's research is abundant and thorough. She takes the reader along the historical path that leads to our diet-obsessed modern world, painting a fascinating sociological portrait of how our cultural beliefs came about. Did you know that, adjusted for increased height, average weights haven't changed since the turn of the century? And yet, 100 years ago, 10 percent of women thought they were too heavy, and now 90 percent think so! As food for thought, this is a most nourishing book
