Book Description
If you're a novice programmer and you want to learn C#, there aren't many books that will guide you. Most C# books are written for experienced C++ and Java programmers. That's why Jesse Liberty, author of the best-selling books Programming C# and Programming ASP.NET, has written an entry-level guide to C#.
Written in a warm and friendly manner, Learning C# assumes no prior programming experience, and provides a thorough introduction to Microsoft's premier .NET language. The book helps you build a solid foundation in .NET, and shows you how to apply your skills through the use of dozens of tested examples. You'll learn about the syntax and structure of the C# language, including operators, classes and interfaces, structs, arrays, and strings.
Better yet, this updated edition of Learning C# has been completely revised to include the latest additions to the C# language plus a variety of learning aids to help lock-in new knowledge and skills. Here's what's new:
- Extensive revisions to the text and examples to reflect C# 2005 and .NET 2.0 changes
- An introduction to Visual Studio 2005, the most popular tool for building Windows and web applications
- More than 200 questions and fully debugged programming exercises with solutions
- A greater emphasis on event handling
- New coverage of generics, generic collections, partial classes, anonymous methods and more.
By the time you've finished Learning C#, you'll be ready to move on to a more advanced programming guide that will help you create large-scale web and Windows applications.
Whether you have a little object-oriented programming experience or you are new to programming altogether, Learning C# will set you firmly on your way to mastering the essentials of the C# language.

disappointing.......2007-08-08
I've been programming computers for 30+ years and have migrated across several languages and systems as times dictated. I have accumulated courses, degrees, jobs, projects, and rows of books along the way. My most recent focus has been Perl on FreeBSD and Apache/CGI/mod_perl. I now have the need to write Windows GUI applications. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not chosen to make Perl a first-class language on their platform, so I am left with few choices (I am most familiar with ActiveState Perl and Cygwin). Given the fact that Visual C# 2005 EE is a free download, I've decided to climb two more learning curves -- C# and .NET.
When learning Perl, I found O'Reilly's "Learning Perl" and "Programming Perl" books to be awesome. So, I bought the C# parallels, hoping for a similar experience. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.
The content of "Learning C#" is basically a subset of "Programming C#" by Jesse Liberty with advanced topics removed. Both are what I would call language survey/ "gee whiz" books -- they describe the "what" and/or "how", but often leave out the "why". I forced my way through both and may use "Programming C#" as a reference, but "Learning C#" will only collect dust.
This book also fails its presumed purpose -- teaching the reader how to write good programs in C# at a basic to intermediate level. Mr. Liberty is clearly an intelligent person and a capable programmer, but, unfortunately, he and/or Mr. MacDonald are not good teachers (or, at least not for how my brain is wired).
Both books suffer from a deeper criticism that seems to plague almost all Microsoft subject books. I cut my teeth on Kernighan, Richie, Pike, Rochkind, Plauger, Bach, McKusick, Wall, Schwarz, Christiansen, etc., and those are the standards by which I judge all others. The writing style and technical accuracy of those authors are levels above what I find from most Microsoft subject authors. My guess is that the C/Unix and Perl authors train to higher standards (e.g. Ph.D, post doctorate), their vocations require them to write to higher standards (e.g. academic and professional journals, peer review), and they have experience in education. In Mr. Liberty's defense, those authors are not subject to scope and speed of the Microsoft product treadmill.
Given the lack of a good technical bookstore in my area, I am relegated to reading reviews such as this on the Internet, ordering a book sight unseen, and hoping for the best. Please post your reviews so we can help each other. :-)
PERFECT C# 2005 Introduction for Novice OOPs.......2007-05-27
The author's approach to explaining the C# 2.0 .NET 2005 technology is so versatile that both experienced and novice programmers alike will almost certainly appreciate this definitive guide. Please note that this textbook DOES NOT focus on graphical user interfaces (GUIs), but rather on proper programming techniques, unique C# features, and patterns. To integrate the learning of C# with GUI based applications, you may want to consider a textbook from Addison-Wesley Professional's Microsoft .NET Development Series (i.e. Framework Design Guidelines). If you are completely new to C# you need to know that this language is specifically designed for the development of Internet based and .NET Framework based applications. Any programming project outside of this scope may be better solved by using either C/C++ or JAVA. For anyone only looking for just one textbook to learn both the C# language and GUI design may find one of my other faverate textbooks more appropriate: Apress' ASP.NET 2.0 in C# 2005 (beginner), Apress' Pro ASP.NET 2.0 in C# 2005 (advanced), Apress' Pro .NET 2.0 Windows Forms and Custom Controls in C# (advanced); Addison-Wesley Professional's Windows Forms Programming in C# (advanced); O'Reilly's Building .NET Applications with C# (intermediate).
Very Highly Recommended for Newbies to C# and OOP.......2007-03-10
I'm entirely new to object oriented programming; last time I programmed was in 1982 using the original C. The author does an excellent job in presenting this material to someone new to C# and object-oriented programming concepts. The challenge for authors is to balance how much material and detail to include; not enough and even a newbie will get bored; too much and you either loose the average reader or you force the determined reader to go back many, many times to try and parse out exactly the concept you are trying to teach. J. Liberty strikes an excellent balance in this book. At the end of each chapter are programming exercises to test the readers knowledge and all of the code used in the examples is on website.
I've already purchased a few of this authors other works on C# that cover various concepts in more detail and rigor.
An OOP C# primer.......2007-01-05
If you need to brush up on your Object-oriented programming skills in the context of learning C#, this is a great book. It doesn't go in-depth into data structures, but it will get you going right away, even if you've never had OOP experience.
Great Beginners Book.......2006-09-24
With only a few months of OO programming about 6 years ago, I needed a book to take me from the beginning again. This book delivered. I found I have needed to read some chapters several times to 'get it', particularly chapters 7 & 8. I like the way he writes an example and then steps you through it, breaking down the code into sections. It was easy to read and easy to refer back to. I still have a couple of chapters to review and I'll be looking for more of his books.

"Eat sensibly and exercise," is Bob Greene's message, and in a friendly and personal style, he shows you how. Greene, an exercise physiologist and Oprah Winfrey's trainer, focuses on diet with a wealth of sound information and helpful strategies. Greene starts with a cutting overview of destructive diets, including those popular today. Then, after reviewing exercise essentials, he presents a refreshingly sensible plan for nutritious, healthy eating, with tools for keeping intake moderate. One key is eating breakfast, which boosts metabolism and helps you eat less all day. Another is distributing your calories over the course of the day rather than eating a lot at any one meal. You won't get bored with Greene's 85 enticing recipes, including Scrambled Egg Whites with Spinach and Orange, Breakfast Fried Rice, Gingered Butternut Squash Soup, Fish Chowder, Portabella Mushroom Burgers, Pan-Seared Fillet of Tilapia with Mango Tomato Salsa and Lentil Pancake, and Chocolate Almond Angel Food Cake. Greene's other books in the Make the Connection (with Winfrey) and Get with the Program series helped millions start a fitness program. This one will help people concerned with weight loss and health take their next steps towards a nutritious, moderate-calorie, lifetime eating plan. --Joan Price

If you're looking for a great eating guide, look no further than The Get with the Program! Guide to Good Eating: Great Food for Good Health by Bob Greene

Mr. Greene's philosophies to my routine. Unlike so many of the other books on diet and nutrition, Greene takes into account how difficult it can be to eat healthy and still live in the REAL world.
I have taken his advice and changed my diet and (with exercise)already lost 15 lbs. (in a month)
Although I enjoy hearing and reading Bob Greene's books,.......2006-12-23
there was nothing new in this one. Most of the pertinent information has already been heard on "Oprah" or in his previous material.
Though the recipes sounded delightful, they were not practical or convenient. Several ingredients would require many stops at specialty stores.
There are 80 recipes in this book, I've tried 17 of them and all have been quite impressive!.......2006-12-23
However if what motivates you to lose weight is sitting down before a table of gourmet food that is easy to prepare with no-nonsense ingredients, this book will keep you on track. Friends and family alike will NOT have the feeling that they are being served "diet food" In fact, the author points out how and why most diets are failures.

Blech!.......2007-09-12
Recipes were awful! There are much better vinegar books out there if you take a look. This one just isn't it.
Terrible/Nonexistant Research, People Will Buy Anything.......2006-06-15
Before spending a single PENNY on this book, take a look at even the SIMPLEST research done on this topic. I looked through a friends' copy, and laughed out loud. In about a minute I was able to explain VERY SIMPLY how this would be an ineffective diet aid.
Vinegar is 5% acetic acid, a VERY dilute and relatively weak acid. Your stomach produces a lot of hydrochloric acid ... an EXTREMELY strong acid (about ONE THOUSAND TIMES STRONGER than acetic acid). Now, whether this tiny amount of weak acid helps you break down carbohydrates faster or differently in your stomach (which all but one study says it does not), makes very little difference, because those carbohydrates are still going to pass into your small intestine and there be absorbed into your system.
The body operates in a very narrow range of pH (how acidic or basic you are). Attempting to make yourself more acidic to destroy bacteria is ridiculous. First, you'd have to drink A LOT of vinegar (the body has a natural buffer system to keep us from killing ourselves, so you'd have to overcome that), and then, of course, you'd be dead.
This book is designed to prey upon people desperate to lose weight, and looking for SOME sort of affordable solution to a very real problem. There may be something easier than exercize and reducing caloric intake, and there may be something cheaper than gastric bypass, but THIS is not it. Please don't give this shyster author your time and hard-earned money.
apple cider vinegar - weight loss.......2005-08-16
I bought apple cider vinegar 1 month ago and it seems that i have not lost a single pound. I thought it would eliminate my body fats but it doesnt.
Losing weight can be easy.......2004-01-04
I bought Klaus Oberbeil's book Lose Weight with Apple Vinegar 3 years ago. It took me 1 year but I managed to lose 75 pounds without feeling hungry or deprived at all. I went off it for a while now am back on it again to lose the other 35 pounds I'd like to lose. I have bought 25 more books and gave them to customers of mine in my beauty salon who wanted to lose weight. It made such a difference in my life that they wanted to try it too. I've been on every diet made and nothing worked and kept the weight off. This is a miracle. Thank you so much for introducing me to vinegar. Pat Hamilton
Highly Reasearched!.......2002-02-07
I was fortunate to recently acquire this book from a learned professor of nutrition who found it within his good graces to purchase this book on the eve of my 40th birthday. He presented the book with a sneer, " Pietro you're obese and you don't listen to me, so try reading this." I figured that Samuel must have found this book worthwhile, beacause he is not give to utter laudatory remarks about the many diet books avaiable. I have followed the instructors of Klaus Oberbeil and it has helped not only my general health, but also my relationship with Sam.

Very informative.......2006-06-20
This book is really good when you find yourself trying to decide what the least of all evils is while away from home. It is written as "advise." Example: "If you are at "Such & Such" restaurant, the best thing on the menu would be A, B, or C; Do Not even think about D, E, or F." While being full of great info, as I read my little voice was whispering "Common Sense." "Never order anything with Alfredo in the description." Well, we know that! But, it is also definitely an eye opener in some respects.
I ordered this book in hopes of attaining a precise (Cal., Fiber, Fat) breakdown of the elusive & mysterious entrée's we find when we're out and you won't find that info here, so I am a bit disappointed, on the other hand, if I had looked through it before I bought it I still might have gone ahead because Greene takes the guess work out of ordering a meal by giving you a few of your best options were you to go to these establishments. All in all, this book is very informative, but you can survive without it, and probably find one with more precise nutrition information.
GOOD ADVICE IF YOU EAT FAST FOOD.......2005-02-16
I guess one could argue with a fair amount of validity that eating healthy and fast food our a rather distinct contrast in terms. The best advice if one wants to eat healthy at a fast food place is...don't! But let's face it...most of us simply are not going to heed that advice because our lives are so on the go that fast food is often not only the best option but the only option, particularly for lunch.
Bob Green's book takes you through just about any fast food chain you can think of as well as many of the more medium-priced sit down chains such as Applebees, Bennigans, Red Lobster, and more. You're sure to find your favorites from McDonalds to Arbys and Quizno's to Jack in the Box. Even pizza chains like Dominos, Little Caesers and Pizza hut. Bob provides the best choices for healthy eating at all of these establishments complete with all the nutritional information you'll need to make an educated selection. Bob even gives suggestions for beverages as well.
Most of the selections should be fairly common sense among eaters, Obviously a grilled chicken sandwich without the mayo is going to be much better for you than that double Whopper with cheese, but it's still nice to have all the selections and nutritional information in one neat little book.
a great little book!.......2004-03-18
I went to the bookstore the other day, and as I was browsing the new releases when I have came upon this little book!
It is really comprehensive. It would be a great addition to any person's personal diet plan to follow.
It is not easy to eat healthy when you go out, but with this book you can have the convenience of fast food, still eat well and not give up on your diet goals! I would highly recommend this book!

Lose weight, get in shape, understand your emotions, and feel good about yourself. These are the interrelated goals of Get with the Program by Bob Greene, best known as Oprah's personal trainer and coauthor of Make the Connection.
Using this book is like having a personal coach working with you on emotional and behavioral changes as well as diet and exercise. Greene realizes that if you've had trouble losing weight, you need to understand your attitudes and obstacles before any diet or exercise program will work. So phase one of the program is a self-examination regarding changing your life, including written exercises to help you understand your emotions. Phase two adds aerobic exercise, without changing your diet, to rev up your metabolism. Phase three focuses on the emotional connection to eating habits, including identifying emotional eating triggers and working to overcome them. Phase four adds strength training and dietary changes.
Get with the Program is conveniently spiral-bound, so it's easy to fill in the written exercises and view instructions and photos of the physical exercises. It's highly recommended for people who have had trouble losing weight and are serious about getting in shape--physically and emotionally. --Joan Price

Gotta do it........2007-01-10
I NEED to set time aside to do this.
It is pretty deep but it will get you there. You've got to want to get there. It's a great program.
The Only Book That Explained My Situation.......2005-10-15
After a month of working out HARD and eating right, I had lost a total of two pounds and was beyond despondent. In desperation I re-read all those diet/exercise books I had purchased over the years, including this one. Greene explained that my situation was not only not that unusual, it was actually a good thing! He also explained that for some people (me) there is cycle of gaining a few pounds back before each cycle of losing. That knowledge alone has kept me from running to the ice cream when the scale goes up after I've done everything right.
Greene doesn't cite any references, but my personal trainer says these concepts are in the professional literature. It just doesn't sell a lot of books (or get many training clients) to tell people they may not lose any meaningful weight right away.
This info, which I have seen nowhere else, helped me stick with it. Six weeks in the weight started coming off, just as his predicted. And now when I gain an unexpected pound or two I know that soon I'll be dropping three or four.
Basic Diet Stuff.......2004-11-15
If you have never read a diet book before than this one is as good as any. The author addresses all aspects of dieting and exercise. My disappointment was that you have heard it all before. I have had success on Weight Watchers, Body For Life and the South Beach Diet. My problem is that after the initial excitement wears off, I don't maintain the program. I was interested in this book because the other reviews indicated that it addressed emotional aspects of over-eating. Specifically, boredom, stress, etc. But I was really disappointed when he discussed these issues because he wrote a little blurb on each aspect and then gave some personal story. To me it was childish psychological advice.
For example, he discusses binge eating. Now I am only about 10-15 pounds overweight and I can eat properly all day and then right before I go to bed ruin my diet and eat 3 doughnuts or some other high caloric food. His belief is that it is often related to some childhood trauma and that seeking professional help may be the answer. I dont know about you but I am not going to seek professional help to lose 15 pounds.
Then he suggests to eat wisely. He has a chart that actually says if you want to eat fudge, then choose fruit. If you want cake, choose skinless grilled chicken breast. Duh? I did not make that up. Here's another one. If you want to eat pie, then choose soup. Is he kidding? I guarantee that I will never eat chicken breast instead of accepting a piece of birthday cake.
Okay I don't want to just bash the book. Everything he writes is probably dietetically correct. It's just that I have read them all and done most of them and I have yet to experience one that worked long-term. The one that I had the most success is Body For Life of which I lost 40 pounds and as I mentioned I have put back 10 to 15.
Good luck. Nothing new to report.
Unscientific and improvised analysis.......2004-09-20
Like many fitness gurus who resort to training as an escape from learning science, math, and the other related disciplines, yet believe that they could master the complexity of these integrated fields, without even touching a text book, Bob Greene embodies such naïve and simplistic approach. In this book, he improvises many flawed information, believing that the folks training for fitness are the last people to discover his lazy and flawed interpretation of the physiology of fitness.
Although he states that this book is not about fitness or diet, yet he deals solely with fitness and diet claiming to enhance health and emotional well being. He describes FOUR phases for accomplishing that goal as follows:
(1) Phase One is preparation in which he recommends drinking a minimum of 6 glasses of water daily.
(2) Phase Two is revving up your metabolism in which he recommends drinking a minimum of 7 glasses of water daily.
(3) Phase Three deals with emotional eating in which he recommends drinking a minimum of 8 glasses of water daily.
(4) Phase Four deals with emotional well being in which he recommends drinking 9 glasses of water daily.
So, if the 6, 7, 8, and 9 numbers do not raise your suspicion about the irrationality of this author, hold your breath, for you will have to unlearn all common knowledge and relearn new flawed information from this book, as follows:
(1) On page 59, the author states:
"Physically fit individuals store considerably more water than unfit individuals. This explains how a very fit person can weigh much more than their appearance would suggest".
He does not cite a reference for such simplistic explanation. One would assume that a physically fit person has better cardiovascular condition that manages water storage more efficiently without accumulating body fluids. He explains that based on the glycogen contents of fit muscles, while ignoring the increased calcium storage in fit people that adds to their bodyweight.
In that page also, he states: "daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal water cycles fluctuation is not fully understood" without citing any reference for such bizarre phenomena that he alone believes in.
(2) On page 66, he defines "metabolism" as the rate that your body burns calories and that `rate' is the key word. He thus does not understand that metabolism is a process of assimilating biological products.
(3) On page 67, he erroneously states:
"There is no way to measure the rate of burning calories directly other than feeling perspiration and getting clothes more loose after exercise."
He thus does not understand the basic physiological experiment of measuring caloric expenditure that many high school kids learn in high school.
He erroneously states that "when you're dehydrated, you eat more" and calls that "artificial hunger". That is very bizarre way of interpreting physiology.
(4) On page 107, he claims that research proves that 30 to 40 minutes per week of aerobics is adequate, without citing any source for that research.
(5) On page 109, he erroneously claims that low intensity exercise burns lots of calories but makes you get "very hungry" and eventually eat back all of the burned-off calories. There is no justification for that false claim.
(6) On page 117, he states that alcohol contains 7 calories per gram without stating which type of alcohol. The USDA National Nutrient Database gives less than 3.83 Calories/ gram of WHISKEY, other alcoholic beverages contain less than that.
(7) On page 152, he claims that starting training with weights in phase One will increase your appetite, which is another bizarre discovery.
(8) The book has 72 blank sheets, for the reader to fill in, out of 200 pages of the whole books. There are no references.
Motivating.......2004-06-21
Bob Greene's book should not be labeled a diet book, so much as a book about changing one's lifestyle. Using his four-step process, I was able to rejuvenate my exercise and diet regimen and managed to lose about 20 pounds. Much of this was fat, as the fourth phase of Greene's plan emphasizes muscle building.
This book is probably best suited for beginners. Greene's message addresses losing weight, improving cardiovascular health, understanding why you eat (emotional eating, ala Dr. Phil), and improving self-esteem. Greene also advises people not to eat after 7pm, which I believe may be based on the false premise that a person's metabolism shuts off during sleep. According to Greene's plan, you should change your lifestyle in fours phases: 1) find out where you are at, what got you there, and what you want to achieve; 2) implement an aerobic exercise routine; 3) get to know what emotions are working to cause you to eat in excess of your body's needs; and, 4) build muscle with anerobic exercise.
If you already exercise regularly and are knowledgeable of sound nutrition concepts, you may not need this book. However, if you're like me, you may find Greene's book motivational and thus worth the money and time.

Customer Reviews:
adequate, but not inspirational.......2006-08-20
The journal is adequate, though not great. It is simple to use, but leaves out some food groups likeprotien and dairy. It also assumes that everyone drinks alcoholic beverages.
Great Journal w/ or w/ out the Program.......2004-10-20
I bought this when I was reading Get With the Program but it is actually a great journal.
The front and back cover w/ Bob Greene's face can be removed w/ out hurting the journal. You then have a nice spiral bound journal that says "Daily Journal" on the front in blue lettering on white with a white cardboard back that is hard enough to let you write well in the journal.
The book has a good two page daily lay out where you can record you cardio, weights and eating habits w/ or w/out the program. There is also enough space to write your daily thoughts and/or listing of foods if you are keeping a food diary.
It is a great size and just a nice item if you are tracking your health!
Buy the author's photo and an empty notebook for $14.95.......2004-09-16
If you live in a rural community, away from major bookstores, and happen to mail order these deceitful publications, you will be disappointed as hell. Many of these paranoid fitness gurus prey on unwary consumers who seek help to better their life. In this empty notebook, Bob Greene does not shy from sticking his photo on the front cover in order to impress you with his beautiful green eyes, for the price of $14.95.

Great concept, great franchise.......2004-05-16
Bob, I love your programs and your energy. I think just about everything you do is awesome! This book however isn't much more than a lab journal. It has us write down food/exercise like we are a science experiement. It is a lot like a lined paper notebook.
I got a lot more out of LifeChanger. Your exercise program, coupled with this self discovery tool enabled me to lose 185 pounds! I recommend every buys ALL of Bob Greene's other books, but pass on this one and get yourself LifeChanger instead! I found mine on eDiets.com's store.
Bob Greene is the BEST!.......2003-04-26
From Make the Connection to Get with the Program to Get with the Program's Guide to Healthy Eating to this Daily Journal, Bob Greene is down to earth, easy to understand, and is highly motivating and encouraging. I would recommend his books to anyone desiring to take better control of their health and fitness, and do it with a common sense approach. I see why Oprah likes him so much.

Customer Reviews:
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-02-28
Do you have the tools to create, debug and execute PL/SQL code? If you don't, then this book is for you. Authors John Garmany and Don Burleson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will introduce you to the power and capability of Oracle's Procedural Language extensions to Structured Query Language or PL/SQL.
Garmany and Burleson, begin with an introduction to what PL/SQL is and how to use it. Then, the authors deal with structures that alter the program flow. Next, they cover creating and using PL/SQL procedures and functions. They also focus on using PL/SQL to interact with data in the database. Finally, the authors covered a lot of advanced PL/SQL topics from collections and bulk operation, to packages and triggers.
In this most excellent book is designed to be a high-level introduction to PL/SQL. Perhaps more importantly, this book will help you put the incredible power of the Oracle Database to use with your application.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-03-07
I started using Groove and it is a great piece of software.
Get in the Groove: Building Tools and Peer-to-Peer Solutions with the Groove Platform is a great book as the Groove documentation, while excellent, lacks a lot.
valid uses for p2p.......2005-02-17
To many people, p2p software and networks are synonymous with unauthorised copying of music or video. Hence all the to-do about Kazaa, Gnutella and BitTorrent. But along comes Stanhope with his explanation of what you can do with Groove, to put a different spin on matters.
He shows how you can use Groove as a framework for ad hoc groupware, for a set of users scattered over the Internet. Prior to the Web, the concept of groupware certainly existed in the 1980s. Groove is a natural extension of those ideas. Plus others that have also proved fruitful. Like using XML to encode configuration settings. And Groove supports several programming languages, like C++, Visual Basic and C#. Alas, no Java at this point.
The book can be intense. The author assumes you are already experienced in one of those languages. He dives in quickly into the gritty details of coding. Which is probably what you need.
Stanhope deserves credit for helping show that p2p can be used for valid and serious purposes.
The best yet..........2002-08-20
Packed with very useful information and examples for the developer. It hits the ground running - just pure code that gets you up & developing in no time. Lucid text, content & layout, tips & cautions, tools and sample code on CD-ROM - a great way to start developing for the Groove platform. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to this book - developing for Groove with C#/.Net ;)
