4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-06-06

I own the first book "Power of positive thinking". I can hardly wait to read the other two. At one point in my life I was covered with negative thinking and it drastically affected my actions and situations around me. However, using this book changed my life. I trust in God more now, have more faith in him, and I am much happier today. Also, more people started noticing and they liked the happier, more in control me. Praise God!!

2 out of 5 stars Full of Stories, no real direction.......2007-03-27

The book teaches through others inspirational stories; there is no real teaching on how to have a positive attitude. I was expecting the book to give me steps on how to have a positive out look. It is also a religious book, which I didn't expect when I ordered it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Boost!.......2007-01-05

This book is an excellent comprehensive boost for anyone who wants to welcome change and new ways of seeing their world and the issues they may have in relationships, wealth, success and life in general. I haven't finished reading it yet - but have found that even just one page a night before bed does wonders in slowly opening us up to change and positive ways of thinking. It's difficult to do in a world that bombards us at lightening speed with so many mixed positive and negative, draining messages. This is a great way to keep your feet on the ground, mind focused on the important things and even if you aren't religious to explore yourself and spirituality. Like a pocket psychotherapist ;-)

STILL APPROPRIATE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I READ IT 30 YEARS AGO, NOW IT IS HELPING MY SON.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it. NOW........2006-11-04

Easily the best book I've ever bought. If I could rate this book six stars, I would.

Six months ago, I decided to change my life and head for the military. I wanted to be the best and decided to try out for the Rangers, an especially ambitious goal considering my activity level was on par with most vegetables. My friends laughed at me, I bought this book.

Using this book as my motivational guide and Stew Smith's 12 Weeks to BUD/S as my exercise plan, my pushup/run/situp/swim scores absolutely shot through the roof. I have never felt motivation like I felt after reading through Norman Peale's book and if it wasn't for this purchase, I honestly believe I would have abandoned this goal and would still be miserable, sitting on my couch, and playing video games, not out getting in shape for the Rangers.

That was over six months ago now, and am heading off to basic pretty soon with my body ready and my mind motivated.

Thank you Mr. Peale even though you are probably dead, I am a very happy customer and have even bought a couple copies for my friends. The concepts in this book are the best things that have ever happened to me and have absolutely revolutionized my life.

They can revolutionize yours too. All you have to do is buy it and use it.

MY GRANDKIDS WILL ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I DID AS A CHILD WHEN MY MOM READ TO ME. IT HAS ALL HIS WRITINGS.

1 out of 5 stars Andersen deserves better.......2007-03-10

It is just sad that publishers like this one are opportunistic and know that just because Andersen is on the cover the book will sell. The translations are rickety and unreadable. And the quality of the book is disappointing. I immediately resold mine and bought another, far superior, volume. Don't get taken for a ride.

5 out of 5 stars This book is for adults as much as children.......2006-10-27

Hans Chrisitian Andersen's fairy tales are incomparable. They have a level of depth absent in any other collection of fairy tales including the Grimm Brothers, Arabian nights etc...He amalgmates magic and reality and seals them in beautiful poetic expression. You will feel pain and love, rejection and hope, despair and persistence. The characters and images are sad yet impeccable. The tales are vivaciously symbolic of your dreams and reality. My favorite tales are The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid(which is way different from Disney's version). They are a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars Not for kids.......2006-07-09

I first read HCA when I was about 8 and I remember being baffled at their deviation from the standard "fairy tale" formula. They stayed with me however.
I bought this edition because I wanted to explore more of his work and I am very glad I did. I have finished about 3/4ths of this volulme and the richness, satire, obersvation, depth, humor and relevance of the themes continue to awe me. It's not a book for children but for those adults who want to go on adventures with a master storyteller.

5 out of 5 stars Every one should read.......2006-02-25

This is the perfect gift for a child or adult of any age who enjoys reading.

Suppressed by the early church fathers who compiled the Bible, these apocryphal books have been shrouded in silence for centuries. Translated from the Original Tongues, with 32 illustrations from Ancient Paintings and Missals.

4 out of 5 stars Clarifies A Lot!.......2007-05-14

As a student of the gospel, clarity is everything. The Lost Books of The Bible allow a student to achieve a better grasp of the "why(s)" in the Word.

3 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Companion to the Bible Itself.......2007-01-12

This book contains many writings that were simply left out of the final version of the Bible. The inside flap notes that the church suppressed many of these documents. Nevertheless, these writings do not provide any information that is truly spectacular by 21st Century standards. These documents were likely omitted because they did not fit into the neat chronology of the Bible, showed women in a stronger role than was acceptable in medieval times, or suggested that Christ made mistakes as a youth.

"The Acts of Paul and Thecla" describe a woman who helped spread the word of God. The document clearly shows her as a strong woman and a true disciple. Church elders of the medieval period probably felt that a story of a strong female was inappropriate for women of that period. The events surrounding her persecution are filled with miracles. She survived attempts to kill her through burning and attacks by wild beasts. In the end, she disappeared into a crack in a rock that was created by God. God then closed the opening behind her.

The first part of the book describes the birth of the Virgin Mary and her marriage to Joseph. The book also contains writings that describe the adolescent years of Jesus and the magical powers of the cloth used to wrap him as a baby. Some events show Jesus in a less than perfect light. These writings nevertheless describe a part of the Gospel that is not widely known.

Some parts of the book flow easily while other writings are difficult to follow. The books of Hermas provide an example of easy reading and tedious reading. "The First Book of Hermas," tells an interesting story. He passes near a great beast, one hundred feet long with locusts coming out of its mouth. Hermas was not killed by the beast as he had faith that the Lord would protect him. The third book talks of mountains and stones that are used to build a tower. Only after struggling through this document does the reader learn that the tower is a metaphor for the house of God.

The end of the book contains multiple letters from Pontius Pilate and Herod. Herod talks about how he is paying the price for killing John the Baptist. Pilate sends letters to Tiberius Caesar, which recount his reasons for crucifying Jesus. His letters also discuss the miracles surrounding Jesus such as the raising of Lazarus, and the earthquake following the crucifixion. These documents note that Tiberius subsequently killed Pilate for his role in the crucifixion.

Like the Bible itself, this book is a compilation of ancient writings. Also like the Bible, the documents are presented in two vertical columns per page. This book is a fascinating companion to the Bible. It provides insight to events surrounding the New Testament that are mostly unknown. Bottom line: a semi tough read but well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Back to my roots.......2006-07-27

I bought this back in college and just now got around to reading it. It's basically a collection of apocryphal and otherwise "unaccepted" texts regarding Jesus of Nazareth and his apostles.

Most of it was letters to various congregations, with messages such as "Be more patient with eachother. Infighting doesn't do us any good" and "Jesus still love you even though he's gone to Heaven". However, the parts I found interesting as a former Catholic were the books that filled in some of the blanks about Jesus' life, particularly as a child.

Apparently Jesus was not the nicest kid to be around. He was incredibly intelligent and confounded his teachers to no end because he already knew everything. However, what really got me was how he treated people who made him angry. On more than one occasion he killed his playmates if they made him made, transformed them into goats for the fun of it, or otherwise wreaked havoc til the neighbors complained and Joseph and Mary had to bring him inside. No wonder the early church fathers cut these out of the Bible! Not a very flattering picture!

However, there were some interesting "rest of the stories" about his adulthood, too. Apparently the robbers who were crucified next to him came from an incident in his childhood, and that was an intrguing tie-in. In fact, a lot of the folks from his childhood came back to play key roles as her got older; many of the apostles were children he healed of illnesses. I also thought the description of Jesus descending into Hell after the crucifixion and pulling Adam out of there was an appropriate story.

I like this because it makes the Christian mythos more complete. Some of it, to be sure, came about long after his death, but then again great figures in history and mythology often grow greater with the passing years.

To be sure, I'm still comfortable in my own (non-Christian) beliefs. However, this is a nice addition to the traditions I was raised in as a child, the stuff they don;'t teach you in Catholic school.

2 out of 5 stars Not Really Lost Books of the Bible.......2006-07-08

These do not seem to be any "Lost Books of the Bible." Many of them were most likely composed after the 2nd century and in the third and fourth. In the Protoevangelion the story of Mary's immaculate conception is told and could have been an influence on the Church's Mariology. In other books, people may have wanted to fill in some of Jesus' life. In the Infancy several times Mary uses the clothes or bathe water of Jesus to heal people. This also contains the story about Jesus speaking even while in the cradle, which I believe found its way into the Koran. Jesus kills several people as a child and later on takes over and teaches his teachers. Of last interest was the writer's claims that Jesus studied the law until aged 30. Nicodemus gives more information on the trial of Jesus and then switched to the story of Jesus's descension into hell and victory. I never knew that Beelzebub, the Prince of Hell, was different from Satan.

Some of these books are said to have been written by some early church fathers. These don't necessarily have to be in the Bible. One important thing was to speak against schism and to strengthen the authority of the bishops, presbyters, and etc... I believe the best written was I Clement. The rest were really boring. From what I can tell, Hermas and other books did not conflict the doctrines of Christianity. They could be as lesson books, but many just did not seem as well elevated in writings style as the books of the NT, and I don't they they belong in the Bible. Most were a stuggle to get through because they were boring. Some people get the idea that a verse in Hermas about the archangel Michael indicates that he was Jesus. I think the closest book to the NT was the epistle of Barnabas. The writings style seemed close to the NT style. I believe Barnabas has the strongest claim to being part of the canon, out of this selection, but I am no expert. Some letters of Seneca, Paul, Pilate, and Herod are probably not authentic and quite ridiculous.

Lastly, I thought the little table of early writers on the catologue of the NT books was very interesting. It starts with Origen in 210 A.D. and goes to the Council of Carthage in 390 A.D. For the most part they all agreed on the same books, yet some noted that people doubted James and Jude. Revelation seems like the most disputed of books, but most seemed to have agreed to it. The more I read of these book not considered canonical, the more I think these people did a good job in the selection. And as some people note, not all these books are considered as bad, they just are not considered as canonical. There are plenty of books written since those early days which are given high importance, yet not considered as scripture and Christian fiction still continues to be written today.

Book Description

The year is 1738; the place, Paris. A baby is born under a fish-monger’s bloody table in a marketplace, and abandoned. Orphaned, passed over to the monks as a charity case, already there is something in the aura of the tiny infant that is unsettling. No one will look after him; he is somehow too demanding, and, even more disturbing, something is missing: as his wet nurse tries to explain, he doesn’t smell the way a baby should smell; indeed, he has no scent at all.

Slowly, as we watch Jean-Baptiste Grenouille cling stubbornly to life, we begin to realize that a monster is growing before our eyes. With mounting unease, yet hypnotized, we see him explore his powers and their effect on the world around him. For this dark and sinister boy who has no smell himself possesses an absolute sense of smell, and with it he can read the world to discover the hidden truths that elude ordinary men. He can smell the very composition of objects, and their history, and where they have been, he has no need of the light, and darkness is not dark to him, because nothing can mask the odors of the universe.

As he leaves childhood behind and comes to understand his terrible uniqueness, his obsession becomes the quest to identify, and then to isolate, the most perfect scent of all, the scent of life itself.

At first, he hones his powers, learning the ancient arts of perfume-making until the exquisite fragrances he creates are the rage of Paris, and indeed Europe. Then, secure in his mastery of these means to an end, he withdraws into a strange and agonized solitude, waiting, dreaming, until the morning when he wakes, ready to embark on his monstrous quest: to find and extract from the most perfect living creatures—the most beautiful young virgins in the land— that ultimate perfume which alone can make him, too, fully human. As his trail leads him, at an ever-quickening pace, from his savage exile to the heart of the country and then back to Paris, we are caught up in a rising storm of terror and mortal sensual conquest until the frenzy of his final triumph explodes in all its horrifying consequences.

Told with dazzling narrative brilliance and the haunting power of a grown-up fairy tale, Perfume is one of the most remarkable novels of the last fifty years.

4 out of 5 stars Good and weird... Weird but very good!.......2007-09-21

I loved reading this book. I have read it more than a couple of times. It's a good read, especially if you are familiar with the world of perfumes.

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2007-09-14

I just don't get all the great reviews. The writing was good, but the story was lacking. The smells were better developed than the characters. Not only did the main character have no soul, but the book had no soul.

1 out of 5 stars A Puddle Disguised as an Ocean .......2007-08-22

As a little girl more in love with the fashions of Morticia Addams than Barbie, who loved vampire stories and Shakespeare at age 10, my grandfather would often say to me "You don't have to be different to be different."

I wish someone had told this to Patrick Suskind.

I get the point: the soul of a man is not his elevation above his base animal instincts, but what man perceives as his soul is, in fact, nothing MORE than those promordial sensory intuitions. But this in and of itself can't carry a whole novella...

Sentence by sentence, I cannot argue that "Perfume" is not well written. The very sensual aromatic details were lovely even when putrid. My nose actually hurt when reading about Baldini trying to come up with the formula for the other perfumer's perfume. But well-written does not a solid story make. The story wove in and out of too many places, trying to make too many melodramatic points with a character without a soul and whose lack of a soul isn't especially interesting, either, so what's the appeal?

It reads like Victor Hugo and Anne Rice had a baby and sat it down at a type-writer as soon as it became an angsty teenager. The level of violence, physical detail, "profound struggling with the soul", etc. smacks of effort and strikes me as entirely masturbatory. I will believe a man who can smell his way through the dark, who kills women for their scents and then makes perfume out of them. But a perfume that induces orgies and cannibalism? No. Now you're just going out of your way to be tragic.

I feel these uber-Gothic details were thrown in as a pseudo-intellectual grab at being beautifully horrific. Here's the thing, though: it's not beautifully horrific if you TRY to make it so.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-07-28

An solid book, relatively quick and easy to read. The reader experiances the life story of a serial killer (the main character) with very...interesting....motivations. By the end you wish for him to be caught and stopped, yet at the same time, you want to escape to see if his theory is true.

2 out of 5 stars Wierd, Wierd, Wierd!.......2007-07-27

If you like something a litle 'different' and than this is for you.
A little morbid towards the end....

Really makes you smell everything after you read this.

2 out of 5 stars I Love Kids Literature But This Book Was Not My Taste.......2007-09-13

I bought the book on the suggestion of other reviews but I was disapointed.
I read the book and it seemed to have a slow start, there was a large assortment of characters though I felt they were not very well developed.
I really don't suggest this tale. I am intereste dint he authors other ork but I will get it from the libray and not waste money purchasing them.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely not what it appears.......2007-09-02

I liked this book far more than I ever intended to. I'm a huge fan of "Goose Girl", but a book with this kind of title? Why don't you just shoot me in the head? But eventually I found myself purchasing what turned out to be a literal diamond in the rough (you see, there's this whole mountain quarry thing going on in the novel).

Wow, was I impressed! Rather than a bunch of silly girls wanting to be princesses, Ms. Hale creates a realistic society of some mountain peasants simply trying to survive in their own little niche of the kingdom. Our heroine is Miri, a small girl that can't wait to join the rest of her village in the quarry. But she is not allowed.

To shake things up, the prince of the kingdom supposedly is destined to select a bride from their mountain. So all the elligible girls are gathered together for training.

And we all know what happens when we put a bunch of teenage girls together. Tensions run high as jealousy seeps in. All the girls have their different reasons for being at the school, for wanting to be princess. All of them, wonderfully enough, are fantastic reasons.

It seems as though our little Miri will fall behind. But she proves herself victorious as she grows and learns and realizes she is not the useless little thing she believes she is.

It's sweet, powerful, and inspirational, definitely worth its Newberry Honor.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-07-26

This is such a cute book. Perfect for girls 12-15. Fun to read and nothing offensive.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story.......2007-07-13

This book was my introduction to Shannon Hale's writing. The characters are well-developed, the landscapes and locations are described vividly, and the ending is very satisfying. The world Shannon Hale has created for these characters is also very unusual and interesting, and her development of the mining town and its culture contributes greatly to the fullness of the story.

I found some of the scenes in the Academy schoolroom to be reminiscent of Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess (another of my all-time favorite books) -- the way that Miri interacted with her classmates reminded me a litle of Sara Crewe (defying a bully, protecting a younger classmate, etc.). The rest of the stories are very different from each other, however. Perhaps the schoolroom scenes are similar because they are both girls' boarding schools, and some behaviors in that setting can be expected (such as competition for being the best in the class, and clique formation).

Overall, I thought this book told a great story, with memorable characters and an exciting conclusion. It is a great way to introduce yourself to Shannon Hale's other books.

Collected together in one volume, The Complete Novels show the development of Austen as a writer and social commentator. From the early optimism and youthful energy of Northanger Abbey to the quiet and subtle art of Persuasion, this collection reveals the breadth of one of the best loved novelists of all time.

Book Description

Jane Austen wrote in the eighteenth century, but her novels are timeless. This complete anthology is unique among single-volume editions of her work because it includes the obscure but delightful Lady Susan, along with the six better-known novels and thirty of Hugh Thomson's irresistible drawings.
All of Jane Austen's novels are love stories, all are stories of country gentry, and all end happily, one way or another. Her plots have the complexity of life and her characters are described with inimitable style and wit—whether caustic or warmly affectionate.
The novels contained in this anthology are Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Lady Susan. The nineteenth-century illustrations of Hugh Thomson capture the flavor of Jane Austen's characters and enhance this extraordinary collection of the complete works of one of the greatest novelists of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing compilation..........2007-08-10

This compilation is absolutely wonderful. It includes all of Austen's novels, also with an unpublished, early novel of hers. I totally recommend it if you simply want to read the novels. However, if you'd like a fancy copy of it you should try something else. This copy is quite simple and perfect for those who like the contents of books, and not the looks.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen - a great read.......2007-04-24

I didn't expect to like Jane Austen, but this was a great set of stories at a great price. Happy endings and well written stories.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen: The Complete Novels.......2007-03-15

Great book, especially for all Jane Austin fans. Also great for anyone who enjoys 19th century "trashy" romance novels (like I do!) A little more expensive than the paperback edition, but well worth the money. Put together much better and will last longer.

3 out of 5 stars Fine print.......2007-03-12

Print much to small for an enjoyable read and I'm not ready for bifocals.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen Is Timeless.......2007-02-12

I love the writing and the wit of Jane Austen, her novels are timeless and very entertaining to read.
The mark of a great writer is the ability to transport the reader into the pages of the book, in essence bring the book to life, Jane Austen accomplishes this feat with me.
I enjoy this era in history, the romance, the innocence, the language, the nuances.
I can't begin to explain how much I'm enjoying myself reading Jane Austen:The Complete Novels, I've wanted this book for so long and finally
I treated myself and bought it and it is so satisfying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you really want to know what Einstein said read this book.......2007-07-10

Einstein's ideas about religion are here in his own words so you don't have to trust does who want to distort them to their own convenience.

These book is writen in a very easy to understand way because as Einstein himself stated "if something can be explained then it can be explained clearly.

The ideas he clearly explains are brilliant and they are about a lot of the things he was interested in his life.

4 out of 5 stars Depends on your purpose.......2007-05-13

If your purpose is simply reading Einstein's articles on issues like world politics, morality, peace, human beings, etc. than this is the book for you. Personally, I wanted the best of his articles, articles that you really want to read because of their specific nature or subject. This is not such a book. Simply a collection of articles.

4 out of 5 stars Window Into One of the Greatest Minds of Modern History.......2007-01-30

This books offers a series of articles written by Einstein on all subjects of life, such as Religion, Politics, War, the Jewish People, and Science. Not only was Einstein a brilliant scientist, he could grasp elements of human life that could rival that of any great philosopher.

Einstein approaches all of the topics with a pragmatism and clarity that is accessible to any reader, which is rare among many intellectuals. It is very interesting to contrast his opinions before, between, and after the world wars and see the further emphasis he puts on his calls for reform around the world. While some might see some of Einstein's socialist tendencies as negative, they are, as stated in the title of the book, only one man's opinion and should be treated as such.

The only reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact that some of the articles seem to be quite similar, repeating themes and ideas that were previously discussed. Also, while someone with a little science background should be able to understand most of the scientific articles, they could be somewhat difficult to get through at times.

Overall, this book provides a great opportunity to read about Einstein's ideas and opinions as a man, not just as a scientist.

5 out of 5 stars Insight.......2007-01-12

If youve ever wondered what was inside Albert's head, than this is the book for you. one example is that I was always torn between science and religion, and Albert was able to elaborate his thoughts on that matter and it was a perspective that I found myself finally agreeing with.

3 out of 5 stars Ideas & Opinions.......2007-01-09

Since Einstein was supposed to be the smartest man of the 19th and 20th centuries, I thought I could get some insight into questions that had puzzled man since the beginning. The meaning of life. What am I doing here? That kind of stuff. Well, let me tell you I spent all my time looking up words on my Franklin. That's the problem with smart people. They try to prove how smart they are by using words that nobody else understands. In my case, Einstein succeeded. I think he's real smart but I still don't know what I'm doing here.

The New York Times bestselling author cooks up a knockout treat featuring the irrepres-sible caterer Goldy Schulz

""I tripped over the body of
Dusty Routt at half past ten on the
night of October 19. . . .""

Goldy Schulz has a lucrative new gig, preparing breakfasts and conference-room snacks for a local law firm. It's time-consuming, but Goldy is enjoying it -- until the night she arrives to find Dusty, the firm's paralegal, dead.

The poor young woman also happened to be Goldy's friend and neighbor, and now Dusty's grieving mother begs Goldy to find out who murdered her daughter. Just because the police are on the case doesn't mean Goldy can't do a little snooping herself.

While catering a party at the home of one of the firm's lawyers, she manages to overhear an incriminating conversation and ends up discover-ing a few clues in the kitchen.

Before long, Goldy is knee-deep in suspects, one of whom is incredibly dangerous and very liable to cook Goldy's goose.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Dishy Read.......2007-08-27

Davidson can always be counted on for a good read. The opening scene of this book is particularly well written and unfolds in with riveting and intense detail. Compared to the other books in the series I think the story is a little grittier than previous books. I'd have liked a little more interaction with Marla. I like the way the characters age and grow during the course of the series. The introduction of Gus, so different from Arch, is interesting. With the exception of her husband Tom being too accommodating, the interactions with the police seem more realistic than in previous novels. My favorite part of this book is the way Goldie dishes up dirt on multiple characters when she starts digging. I also like the recipes being placed at the end of the book where it's easy to find them if I want to try one.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of her best........2007-08-26

I have read all the books in this series and have always enjoyed them. They are quick, light and fast read. But this one made me feel like I had skipped a couple of pages or missed something in the last book. The introduction of the Charlie Baker character had me skipping back through the pages, I had know idea who he was and Davidson wrote it like we should all be familar with him????Then as the story unfolded she started to explain who he was, but more of that should have been done in the beginning. The Routt family were more annoying then sympathetic. The psator character wasn't developed enough.I think I cared less about the characters then in the past and there were too many of them and her usual characters (Marla, her son) were shoved in here in there to fill in.

1 out of 5 stars Expensive Recipe Book.......2007-08-26

After gamely slogging through 232 pages of Goldy's feeling really, really bad about her friend Dusty's death, I skipped to the end. It turned out that two key characters hadn't been introduced in the first 232 pages (of 420), and that another character had only been shallowly introduced and characterized. Following the obligatory scene with Goldy's life being threatened, there followed a couple of pages of explanation of the perp's motivation that read like a plot outline. Too bad the book didn't live up to the outline!

The paperback places all of the recipes at the end of the book, instead of sprinkled through the text, which is a more interesting and fun arrangement. The recipes are the only thing that I can recommend--without having kitchen-tested any. However, I doubt that I will be purchasing another Davidson Culinary Mystery after having spent $7.99 for this turkey of a mystery novel.

3 out of 5 stars Series Slipping.......2007-07-19

This series seems to have been going downhill for awhile now, and this book didn't do anything to reverse that trend.

I used to enjoy all the characters aside from spoiled rotten Arch, so it says something that he was the least annoying character in this book.

Goldy is a caterer. Tom is a cop. Yet he thinks nothing of letting her stick her nose into investigations, allows her to look over evidence, go out and interview people, etc. It just isn't realistic. Then again, the character of Tom isn't enjoyable in the least, as he comes across as Mr. Perfect -- the cop who cooks gourmet meals, polishes the furniture and goes into the station late during an investigation in order to help Goldy clean up a venue for a catering assignment. I really don't like when authors give their main characters flaws to seem more realistic, then ruin the effect by giving them a perfect spouse.

Speaking of flaws, Goldy's continues to be the way she cowers and caters to Arch. It's just unbearable. And with Arch's new brother in the mix, I expect future installments to give us twice the dose of Goldy's lack of spine.

Even the characters I usually enjoy most, Julian and Marla, were annoying in this book.

I hope the next installment is better, but I'm not holding out much hope.

4 out of 5 stars Dark Tort CD (Goldy Bear Culinary Mysteries).......2007-06-12

Of this series, my first on CD. I missed the recipes. I know, they are read to you at the end of the "book," but I listen and drive, so it was not a big help. They could be included in the box, or list a site where one can go to DL the ones you want.
